Drawing of a false fireplace made of drywall. Do-it-yourself decorative fireplace made of plasterboard. Do-it-yourself corner false fireplaces made of plasterboard: features of arrangement

The false fireplace has firmly won its place in the niche of decorative elements of the interior of city apartments. This is largely due to various technical obstacles to the installation of a real, functional hearth. Sometimes it is much easier to install, for example, in the living room, a decorative fireplace.

Various shapes and designs

Materials and tools

One of the most popular materials for self-manufacturing of niches, partitions, shelves and other structures, including decorative fireplaces, is drywall.

Such popularity is explained by many reasons. Drywall as a building and finishing material is very easy to install, it is easy to make constructions of various geometry from it, and the price of drywall is not so high.

For work on the manufacture of a false fireplace with your own hands, you will need the following set of materials, tools and fixtures:

    directly drywall itself, the number of sheets depends on the size and geometry of the future design

    profiles of two types: rack and guide

    self-tapping screws for metal (for assembling profiles) and self-tapping screws for drywall (with a countersunk head)

  • metal shears

    screwdriver

It is also worth noting that the type of facing material will depend on the finish of the false fireplace portal. If tiles are used for decoration, professional craftsmen recommend using a moisture-resistant grade of drywall.

fireplace project

At the start of work, you must first decide on the configuration (model) of the fireplace. To do this, you can find a suitable image or drawing in any catalog, magazine, find a photo on the Internet, or draw a sketch yourself.

Then we need to choose a place where the future false fireplace will “register”. Based on the size of the “hearth”, we draw up an appropriate plan (on a scale), and also apply appropriate markings along the contour on the floor and walls.

Fireplace assembly

Then we are expected to assemble the box (frame). According to the calculations in the drawing and markings on the floor and walls, a metal profile of the required length is cut. Then, with the help of self-tapping screws and a screwdriver, it is assembled into a single structure, according to the chosen geometry of the false fireplace.

If the design plan provides for the presence of an arch above the visual firebox in the design, then to obtain such an arc, it is necessary to notch the profile in several places and bend it slightly.

It is worth noting that at this stage it is quite important to firmly connect the parts of the cut profile to each other, since the stability of the entire structure as a whole depends on this. Giving strength contributes to the presence of various, small in length jumpers.

Masters advise first to assemble the structure itself from profiles and only then attach it to the wall and floor, since it will be inconvenient to mount individual parts in the reverse order of work, the screwdriver may simply not fit between the wall and any structural element.

But in any case, when assembling the frame, you should use the building level as often as possible to check the correct assembly.

Finishing and decorating the fireplace

This is followed by sheathing the frame with drywall. At this stage, the dimensions from the frame are transferred to drywall sheets, after which the necessary details are cut out. These parts should be fixed to the box with self-tapping screws.

Stage five - decorative trim. There are many ways to finish a raised fireplace using different materials.

The simplest and most economical is the simple painting of the entire structure. But it is worth remembering that the surface of the fireplace should be prepared before painting. Such preparation includes puttying and grinding surfaces.

The fireplace can also be simply pasted over with a self-adhesive film. This method is also quite economical. In addition, you can pick up a film with a pattern that imitates natural stone or brick.

One of the most popular types of finishes is decorative plastering. Dry mixes can be purchased at almost any building materials store, they are easily diluted and also easily applied to any surface.

If the fireplace is decorated with ceramic tiles, then do not forget about the pre-priming of drywall and the use of an auxiliary reinforcing mesh. It is attached to the surface of drywall and provides a strong screed between two contact surfaces.

From a luxury item, a fireplace is becoming a popular way of decorating an interior. Many who want to install it at home faced the problem of strengthening the foundation for heavy brick structures. The emergence of electric and bio-fireplaces has expanded their scope to city apartments.

Manufacturers offer a wide range of models for portals. Drywall has great potential for the construction of lightweight modifications. Drywall constructions allow you to decorate the fireplace according to your taste and possibilities: natural stone, tiles, refractory plastic. By making a portal with your own hands, you can give it any shape and size. Lightweight, non-flammable and durable frame will be the basis of great design solutions.

Features and Benefits

Fireplaces differ in their functional features. Real fireplaces - solid fuel or gas heating units - require a chimney, draft, fuel, and a ventilation system. The portal for this type of fireplaces is made of cast iron, steel, brick, natural stone. These materials have high resistance to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, drywall does not have such properties.

A drywall fireplace is a portal in the form of a real hearth, but inside the structure remains hollow, which does not allow it to be used for solid fuel or gas fireboxes. In appearance, such a portal, with the appropriate finish, is no different from a traditional full-bodied fireplace. Drywall frames are used to equip decorative portals and to place an electric or biofireplace inside the structure.

The construction of a decorative or conditional portal for a fireplace with your own hands is a fairly simple process. A frame is erected from a metal profile or wooden bars, and it is sewn up with plasterboard on top according to the pattern of the structure. For sheathing, cuttings are used from a whole sheet, which has dimensions of 1.2 - 1.3 meters in width and 2.5 - 4.8 meters in length.

Depending on the size of the frame, construction trimmings of moisture-resistant GKL are also used. The thickness of drywall is selected based on the required bearing load. If this is a simple niche protruding from the plane of the wall to enrich the interior video sequence with a decorative relief element, then any sheet thickness will do. In the case of using the top surface of the fireplace to accommodate heavy and bulky items, such as an aquarium, a drywall thickness of 20-24 mm is required.

Another type of portals for fireplaces that do not have a chimney, but which have a heating element, are electric and biofireplaces. They also use plasterboard lining. A heat-resistant analogue is used here, it differs in its composition. Fire-resistant properties are enhanced by a special layer of clay and reinforcing fiberglass. In the middle part of the sheet is equipped with crystallized water up to 20 percent by weight of the material. Outwardly, it is easy to distinguish it by the pink color of the cardboard.

Heat-resistant drywall is an excellent material for bio- and electric fireplaces. The standard sheet size is 1.2 x 2.5 m, thickness - 12.5 mm. The weight of the sheet is 25 kilograms, the structure and composition of the material are environmentally friendly, can be used in any residential area.

Drywall is the basis for any finishing material: it can be decorative plaster, painting with interior paints, facing with ceramic tiles, marble, decorative stone, metal slats, stucco rosettes. The frame allows you to hide communications inside to connect an electric fireplace or a lighting device inside the fireplace portal. The shape of the portal depends on the selected design style. A minimalist fireplace can have a simple rectangular shape without additional elements. Imitation of rustic French or Scandinavian fireplaces will require faux stone cladding. The classic portal is trimmed with elements of natural or artificial marble or stucco.

Thus, the cost of construction is affected by a set of finishing materials. Before starting work, it is worth studying the installation technology of a particular type of finish. As well as the technical characteristics of various materials, their compliance with the place where the fireplace will be built. The advantage of decorative and electric fireplaces is that their construction does not require paperwork for a building permit. The design can be placed in any suitable place in the apartment. It is only necessary to decide on the style solution of the false fireplace.

Models and design

The type of fireplace depends on its location in the room. The method of adjoining to the supporting structure determines the appearance of the frame, the consumption of finishing material. When determining the location, the size of the room, the height of the ceiling, the arrangement of furniture for visual contemplation are taken into account. The fireplace is installed in such a place that it does not interfere with the movement of residents.

Decorative portals are:

  • wall-mounted;
  • corner;
  • island.

Wall-mounted - located near one of the walls. A good view requires a lot of space, so in small rooms it is not advisable to place a fireplace portal along one of the walls. The wall fireplace plays the role of the main accent in the interior; sofas and armchairs are placed around the view point. An imitation of a live fire or a biofuel fireplace will bring the whole family together, there should be enough space in front of the fireplace facade.

Drywall corner portals are placed between two adjacent walls. The size of the room can be any. Even in a small living room or bedroom, this structure will not take up much space. Such a fireplace can be equipped with a decorative chimney to create a picture of a real hearth. Structural supports on two walls will allow the use of even heavy finishing materials. Corner fireplaces are a very beautiful design detail. The furniture around is set in a semicircle, which gives comfort to the room.

Island fireplaces are quite voluminous structures. Their construction requires experience and knowledge of building structures. The consumption of materials for this model is the largest, since the portal is formed from four sides. The room for them should be spacious. The portal should not be placed in a zone of active movement. Elements with sharp corners can cause injury, especially in families with children.

Compositionally island fireplaces become the heart of the living room, serve for zoning space and are visible from all points of the room. An island fireplace can be supported on the floor and reach a height of 1/2 or 1/3 of the height of the room. The design of the second option is built from the floor to the ceiling, such as a column with an opening for a dummy hearth or a biofireplace. The third option is possible thanks to the drywall construction, which is attached to the ceiling and descends to the desired height, where a niche or a through opening is formed. Any of these options changes the appearance of space and models functional areas.

The portal can be voluminous in an island location and quite small to decorate a wall. Such stylized fireplace designs solve the problem of decorating a room. They have a depth of up to 20 centimeters, act as a console for placement above the top panel of art objects or a TV. In a shallow niche there are art objects or an electronic imitation of fire without a heating function. In place of the firebox, decorative candles or other stove heating accessories are often installed.

The appearance of the fireplace portal is a key factor in organizing the interior. Recall the Russian expression "to dance from the stove", so in the design of the premises, the shape of the portal becomes the leading theme of the stylistic decision. Modern design trends have given a new dimension to the theme of fireplaces. Unusual materials and innovative forms of portals amaze the imagination. Stylish, finished with metal plates, a decorative fireplace in the Art Deco style erases the familiar image of the hearth.

Small-sized housing led to the emergence of a separate architectural style in the design of the apartment. Small areas called for abandoning frilly furnishings, suggesting the presence of only the necessary multi-functional furniture. The color used in the decoration is white. It visually increases the size of the room, but has some amorphousness. To create an interior frame, add a brown or black color scheme. The fireplace portal has simple rectangular shapes, and the lack of decor, monochrome tinting have become signs of minimalism.

For the construction of a portal in the Art Nouveau style, the frame is made with smooth bends. A niche is decorated with forged details with floral elements or an insert is made from a stained-glass window with a floral ornament. Behind the stained-glass window, a backlight is placed, which inside the hollow structure has a connection to the mains. The backlight can be controlled from the remote control, have different modes of brightness and color segment. The rest of the furnishings are also selected in the Art Nouveau style.

Decorative false plasterboard fireplaces of a simple rectangular shape are very easy to install. The exterior decoration material plays a major role in giving artistic qualities to this structure. Consoles have a small surface area, which means you can afford more expensive finishing materials: granite or marble. Manufacturers offer a wide range of textures and colors of both natural and artificial stone. The original styling scheme, the use of contrasting colors creates an atmosphere of African style.

It takes a little effort to create a real work of art in your home. A shallow portal is installed on a pedestal, the entire structure is lined with several types of tiles from one ensemble, these kits can be picked up in hardware stores. Marbled tiles, ceramic panels on the side panels, a top plate with marble moldings give an expensive look to the fireplace portal. Watercolor paintings, pastel colors of the fireplace trim are recognizable touches of Art Nouveau style.

The suspended ceiling is structurally transformed into a protruding plasterboard panel. A rectangular niche is made in the panel for a decorative firebox. The firebox has a flat frame that can be painted in the color of the panel or highlighted with contrasting colors. These colors are best repeated in the decor of the room. It is enough for a fireplace to add one or two original details to destroy classic stereotypes, move the frame of the fireplace at an angle to another - and futuristic features of high-tech style will appear.

The stylish design of fireplaces suggests a simpler external form, but a complex positional component. Suspended models are common, such designs are the best suited for plasterboard execution. A complex scheme of a frame made of a metal profile must be provided with a design and calculation of the bearing load, since a suspended portal for a false fireplace must withstand the weight of the suspension itself, the weight of the finish, items and equipment.

The classic wall portal is more simple in terms of design. For complex original flash fireplaces, a foam plastic layout is preliminarily made. It is better for beginners to study the selections on construction sites and evaluate their capabilities.

How to make yourself?

Let's get acquainted with a detailed description of the construction of the simplest design for those who want to make a fireplace portal with their own hands. Consider step-by-step instructions for installing the box. You will need to stock up on the following materials: metal profile, drywall, brushes, metal mesh, sickle, self-tapping screws, dowel-nails, a knife with removable blades.

You will need graph paper, a building level and a plumb line, a triangle with a right angle.

  • The first step is to determine the location of the fireplace in the room. We choose the form and function: to install an electric heater or a bio-fireplace, to arrange shelves for decor items or to place a TV. The height, width, complexity and constructive content of the frame depend on these tasks.
  • The next step is to make a scale drawing of the future structure. The drawing reflects the scheme of the frame from a metal profile or wooden bars. As a basis, in the absence of experience, it is better to take a finished project and make the necessary changes to it. For example, let's take a drawing of a classic portal. The sizes are accepted standard, they can be varied at will.
  • According to the finished drawing, the required amount of profile and drywall is calculated. For a complex design, life-size patterns are made of paper or foam and tried on on the wall. On the wall and on the floor, draw a diagram of the portal with a pencil according to the pattern and, if necessary, correct it. According to the corrected pattern, parts are cut out of drywall.

plan

  • Proceed to the installation of the frame. This will require drywall profiles, self-tapping screws and dowel-nails. The profile is cut into segments of the desired length and the frame is mounted on the wall along the marking lines. The upper rail, the ceiling of the decorative firebox and the two lower horizontal rails are connected to the vertical posts. The profile frame of the parapet on the floor is also performed.
  • The next step is to mount the facade frame, fixing it with the help of transverse strips. In the manufacture of arc-shaped elements, it is necessary to make cuts in the side parts of the profile in increments of 2 cm. After that, slightly bend the profile with your hands. With insufficient strength, stiffeners are added from profile segments. All stages of work are controlled by the building level and plumb line in order to avoid deviation from the vertical. Stiffener details are regularly measured and ensure that their location is strictly at an angle of 90 degrees. This will ensure proper load distribution and will contribute to the good performance of the future design.

frame installation

  • After assembling the frame, electrical wiring is placed. Install switches and sockets. The wires are insulated with corrugation and fixed to the wall in places that will then be covered with drywall. Sockets and switches for convenient and safe use are mounted in visible, accessible places. Electronics for controlling LED lighting from the remote control are also placed here.
  • Proceed to plasterboard sheathing. The details are cut out with a construction knife: the outer part of the cardboard is cut on the front side, the rest is broken. Curvilinear parts are cut with a special drywall hacksaw. The finished parts are screwed to the frame with drywall screws, which are fixed after a maximum of 15 centimeters. A homemade fireplace box is considered prepared.
  • The edges of all joints are cut at an angle of 45 degrees to a depth of 0.5 cm and glued with a sickle. Serpyanka is glued to a special putty for drywall. Then one or two coats of primer are applied. After drying, the top layer is leveled with putty to hide defects from self-tapping screws and sickle strips. Dry putty is rubbed with a metal mesh manually to prepare the fireplace box for finishing.

plasterboard sheathing

The construction of a box for a decorative portal requires patience and some skills; at the first stage, advice from professionals will come in handy. The most interesting and artistic part of the work is the finishing of the front part.

The traditional way of decorating is wallpapering. Wallpaper hides surface irregularities well, and one layer of putty is enough. Wallpapers are selected to match the walls from one collection, using a border with an ornament for finishing the facade. The option of pasting the box and walls with the same tapestries looks good only in fashionable stylish interiors - Scandinavian, minimalism, hi-tech. In this case, it is better to prefer a monochromatic color. A fireplace covered with wallpaper in a flower or with monograms looks out of place.

What to paint?

The preferred method of finishing an artificial fireplace is painting. To do this, a primer is applied to the rough layer of putty. After drying, the finishing putty is performed, which is rubbed with a fine mesh until a smooth, even top layer is obtained. Then another layer of primer for painting follows. The paint is applied in two or three layers, less often in one.

The current generation of water-based acrylic paints have good technical performance., dry quickly, have no smell, can be tinted in any desired shade. The acrylic paint coating is not afraid of moisture, withstands several wet cleanings. Oil-based paint is more resistant to external influences, temperature extremes. When installing a fireplace with a heating element, it is necessary to choose a composition with a refractory component. Interior acrylic paint is available in glossy and matte versions. Gloss gives a beautiful shine to the surface, if the method of marbled painting is used, where beautiful stains are specially created, you need to choose this type of paint. For classic fireplaces with stucco, it is better to stay on the matte structure, it gives a silky effect.

Painting is a traditional way of finishing a stove or fireplace. With its help, you can get any kind of decor, from artificial marble to a shiny metal surface. Bronze, gold, silver components are used to give the stucco a gilding effect. Pilasters, rosette and moldings made of polyurethane foam are glued to the front part, painted in white, green or blue. A golden strip is applied to the thread of the pattern with a thin brush; it does not have to be perfectly even. Small changes in the width of the gilding will add a high cost to handmade for a fireplace in a classic palatial style.

The portals made in the technique of "artificial aging of the surface" look very interesting. This finish will decorate the interior in the style of chebi-chic, loft, Provence. The technology of work is as follows. The first layer is painted with an active bright color. After drying, cover with pastel-colored paint. Next, you can apply one or more pastel layers of a different color scheme. After waiting for complete drying, lightly rub the surface with sandpaper so that the lower layers of paint begin to shine through. A vintage fireplace will take on the appearance of noble antiquity.

It is worth paying attention to such staining techniques as applying patina and artificial cracks. Patina is a very thin layer of shiny gold, silver or bronze paint applied to the base color. Then the gilding is slightly rubbed with sandpaper, creating the feeling of a very old valuable thing. Artificial cracks - craquelure - are performed by applying several different layers of color. From above, everything is covered with a special varnish, which cracks, raising layers of paint behind it, and a very interesting “antique” texture is obtained.

How to sheathe a pipe?

Drywall is a unique material, lightweight constructions from it are of great use in interior decoration. Often, a chimney is mounted above the fireplace portal to give greater reliability, as well as to decorate plumbing pipes. If water pipes will be located in the box, they must be painted or tested for strength in order to prepare for conservation.

The top plate of the fireplace or the floor is mounted on the basis of the first contour of the frame according to the marking. The same contour of the desired size according to the drawing from a metal profile is mounted on the ceiling. Then these floor and ceiling are connected by vertical guides, which are reinforced with stiffeners. The chimney frame is trimmed in the same way as the portal body. The presence of a decorative chimney will bring rustic features to the interior. The decoration of the fireplace in a rustic style will look very nice. The optimal location of the fireplace with a chimney is angular. There is enough space to create an imitation of a real firebox.

Many people want to have a fireplace at home. But in apartments, and in private houses, its construction is not always possible. The solution can be a drywall fireplace. Such a structure will be an excellent addition to the design of a bedroom or living room, in addition, it will serve as an original beautiful shelf. If you put a few candles in a niche, then you will have an additional source of light that creates a romantic atmosphere.

Any person can make a false fireplace from the material remaining after the repair. Creation does not take much time and effort. How to build a fireplace, we will tell further.

The easiest way to get a beautiful front lawn

Of course, you have seen the perfect lawn in the movies, on the alley, and perhaps on the neighbor's lawn. Those who have ever tried to grow a green area in their area will no doubt say that this is a huge job. The lawn requires careful planting, care, fertilization, watering. However, only inexperienced gardeners think so, professionals have long known about the innovative tool - liquid turf AquaGrazz.

Fireplaces made of drywall are of two types:

  • Electrical. They perform not only decorative, but also a heating function. Sold in finished form, do not require modification. Just installed. Economically consume electricity. Artificial fire is very similar to natural;
  • Interior. Serves for decoration. Does not emit smoke and pungent odor. No refractory materials are required to create. You can use drywall, wood. The design is small in size, does not clutter up the room and does not require a chimney. Imitation of fire is created by candles or a gas burner, around which logs are laid out. They are divided into three subspecies:
  1. With imitation of a smoldering fire;
  2. With imitation of live fire;
  3. With an imitation of a full-fledged fireplace.

Advantages of decorative fireplaces

Decorative fireplaces have a number of advantages due to which they have become very popular:

  • cheap in price. You need to spend money only on building materials;
  • easily amenable to decorative changes and alterations;
  • you can use any materials for decoration;
  • do not take up much space and fit into the design of your room without any problems;
  • practical in use, can serve as an additional source of heat;
  • can be used to divide the room into zones.

To harmoniously fit the fireplace into the interior, make it in the same style as the design of the room. The use of candles will give the room a touch of romance, and the imitation of smoldering firewood will fill the room with comfort.

Choosing a place for a fireplace

When choosing a place for a false plasterboard fireplace, pay attention to the corner or free wall in the room opposite the sofa in the living room or the bed in the bedroom. A common option is to use a decorative fireplace as a TV stand.

Based on the location you have chosen for installation, you need to calculate the dimensions of the structure. Make a sketch of the fireplace, on which indicate all the necessary parameters. The more carefully you think over and complete the drawing, the easier it will be for you to avoid unexpected situations.

When performing work, try to make it so that even with a close look at the structure it is not clear that this is an imitation. Choose the style of the building based on your preferences and the overall design of the room.

To perform the work, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • drywall (you can also use ordinary cardboard, foam or old furniture);
  • circular saw (facilitates the process of cutting drywall, the lines are smooth, much less dust is generated). The cutting depth must be more than 20 mm;
  • abrasive mesh and bars to it. Thanks to it, you can clean the corners like a hacksaw. And thanks to the design, the mesh is not clogged with dust. Bars are needed for precise processing and complex shapes;

  • self-tapping screws;
  • building level;
  • roulette;
  • dowels;
  • screwdriver;
  • profiles UD and CD (for connecting the joints of the structure).

False fireplace equipment

To create a flame in a decorative drywall fireplace, you can put photo frames depicting a burning fire. So you will have a fire in your apartment, which will give a feeling of comfort and warmth and at the same time comply with fire safety standards.

Photoframes represent the liquid crystal display in a frame with management. Of course, there are photo frames with a lot of additional features. But for our design, they are absolutely not needed. In fact, the technique should show one photo. It is better if the image moves, that is, the device will be able to show GIF images. The amount of built-in memory in such a frame can be the smallest.

A screen diagonal of 40 cm is quite suitable for a fireplace. You can disguise such a frame with decorative elements, and your guests will only see the flame. At the same time, the cost of such equipment without unnecessary functions will not be large.

The choice of material for a decorative fireplace

For the manufacture of a decorative fireplace, you can choose drywall, chipboard, brick or polyurethane. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Next, we will describe each in detail.

  • Brick. A decorative brick fireplace is most similar to a real one. For a false fireplace, facing or decorative bricks are used. To perform the work, minimal knowledge and experience in laying bricks are required. When creating a brick fireplace, it is important to evaluate the strength of the floor. The structure will be very heavy. A brick fireplace does not need additional decorative trim and looks very impressive;

  • Chipboard. Chipboard fireplaces require serious preparatory work. It is necessary to draw up a detailed sketch with exact dimensions and strictly adhere to it when cutting out parts. It is better if all the details are prepared by a specialized company using suitable equipment. Then you will be able to quickly assemble the product, and there will be no problems with mismatched parts. Decorative fireplaces made of chipboard give freedom of imagination when decorating. You can decorate them according to your taste preferences and budget;
  • Polyurethane. Polyurethane is mainly used to decorate structures. However, if desired, the walls of the fireplace can also be made from it. Such a design will not look like a real one, but it will perfectly play the role of a decorative element;
  • Drywall. The most popular material for creating decorative fireplaces. This design is easy to assemble. Even a novice master can perform it. At the same time, an imitation of a plasterboard fireplace looks good in any interior. Since the material is very malleable, elements of any complexity can be made from it. Drywall is affordable and available at any hardware store.

Finishing the structure can be done to your liking. However, you can change it over time.

Instructions for assembling a drywall fireplace

Step 1. Prepare all the necessary materials and tools.

Step 2 Make markings on the floor and walls for the frame of the future fireplace. All markup must strictly comply with your drawings and dimensions of the future design.

Step 3. Fix the guides in accordance with the markup. If you attach them to concrete surfaces, you need to attach the profile, drill the necessary holes, insert the dowels and then fix the guides.

Step 4 Place the racks in the rails and connect the structure with self-tapping screws.

Important! Be sure to check the evenness of the walls before attaching the rails. If the wall is uneven, the guides must be fixed with straight hangers. In this case, the design will be strictly vertical.

Step 5. After you assemble the frame, make a recess for the firebox. To make the design stable, make additional horizontal jumpers between the vertical guides. If you want to make the furnace recess curly, cut the stiffeners at the profile and give the necessary shape to the material.

Step 6 Make the necessary markings on the drywall sheet and cut out the details. A jigsaw or a circular saw is best suited for this purpose. But if you do not have such a tool, use a paper knife. In this case, first cut the paper layer, break the material, and then cut the paper layer from the back.

Step 7. Attach the cut parts to the frame with self-tapping screws. Self-tapping screws should be slightly recessed into the material. The step of fastening screws should be 100-150 mm.

Important! Drywall is a material that breaks easily. It cannot be thrown. Do not apply too much pressure on the screwdriver while installing fasteners.

Step 8. Glue the foot and mantel with silicone glue or self-tapping screws. It is important to fix the shelf well so that it can withstand the load from the TV or decorative elements.

Step 9. All details of the fireplace must be carefully treated with putty. It is necessary to hide not only the seams between the parts, but also the recesses with self-tapping screws. It is necessary to putty in 2-3 layers.

Step 10. After you mount all the drywall elements, you can start decorating. When choosing a fireplace design, navigate on the overall style of the interior. For decoration, artificial stone, brick, ceramic tiles are most often used. You need to fasten the finish with tile glue or liquid nails.

Tiles of the same size should be laid at the same distance. Special crosses will help you with this.

Stone, brick are hardly suitable for modern style. In this case, it is better to use paint or special plaster. Putty the structure, be sure to remove all joints between the parts. Then clean the surface with sandpaper, cover the false fireplace with paint or plaster.

Step 11. The plasterboard fireplace portal also needs to be finished.

As mentioned earlier, you can install a photo frame in a niche, you will get a soft subdued light and an image of a live fire. But such a fireplace will not radiate heat.

The modern interior is perfectly complemented by LED strip. It will emit a lot of bright light. If you install a mirror at the back wall, the space in the firebox will look larger. Fix it vertically, put logs or pebbles on the bottom.

A good reception is the installation of candles in the firebox. So you will have a real fire in the fireplace. However, you should be careful with candles and do not leave them unattended.

Real fire in a drywall fireplace

Making a real fire with firewood, of course, will not work in a drywall fireplace. Firstly, it is a non-compliance with fire safety requirements. Secondly, a false fireplace does not have a chimney to remove carbon monoxide and other combustion products. Modern technologies allow not only to look at the artificial fire in the hearth, but also to bask in its warmth.

Biofireplaces are a great way out. They are fireproof. In addition, only carbon dioxide and water are released as a result of combustion. To make a fire, a special fuel is used - bioethanol. You can buy it at any hardware store.

The cost of biofireplaces starts from 5-6 thousand rubles for the simplest models. More expensive specimens can be built into drywall, and not set as an independent structure.

Despite the fire safety, biofuel fireplaces are not recommended to be left unattended, because in any case it is a fire that can burn you.

Alternatively, you can make a simple burner yourself. For this you will need:

  • glass heat-resistant container;
  • ethyl alcohol or lighter fluid;
  • pebbles;
  • sand;
  • shells;
  • aluminum can;
  • basalt wool.

Take a jar and cut it into 2 parts. The workpiece should not be higher than the glass container. Drill 3-4 large holes in the bottom of the jar. Put basalt wool inside the jar. Connect the top and bottom of the jar. Place the structure on the bottom of the glass container. Fill it with sand and small pebbles. Put large stones and shells on top. Pour ethyl alcohol or lighter fluid and light. You will get a small and beautiful biofireplace.

Important! In no case should a home-made structure be left unattended and dropped, since such a fireplace can lead to a fire.

To install such a burner in a drywall fireplace, the inside of the structure and, in particular, the place where the burner will stand, must be finished with fireclay stone or other heat-resistant material. A built-in metal structure using stone wool or similar heat-resistant materials will work well.

Of course, the appearance of such a burner can be anything. The main thing is that the design features are respected.

Conclusion

A decorative fireplace is a wonderful decoration for any interior. The most affordable and lightweight material for making a fireplace analog is drywall. It is inexpensive, easy to process and can take almost any shape. Even the youngest master will cope with the manufacture of a drywall construction.

A drywall fireplace is a quick design solution that everyone can handle on their own with a minimal set of working tools at hand. Although the manufacture of false fireplaces is possible from almost any improvised means, you can use the remnants of drywall after leveling the walls or organizing suspended ceilings.

Do-it-yourself corner or hinged plasterboard fireplace will decorate both the bedroom and the library. Such a decor item can become a convenient bookshelf, a niche for candles, lanterns, a stand for kitchen utensils. Such a heat source will help divide a large area into functional zones.

Drywall fireplace: before starting work

IMPORTANT! When performing calculations, take into account the thickness of the plasterboard sheets with which you have to work (too thin - 6 mm each - you should not take it, stop the choice at 9.5 mm or 12.5 mm).

For a fireplace with your own hands you will need:

  1. drywall;
  2. profiles UD and CD (during the connection, the frame of the profiles will be formed end-to-end);

First you need to decide on the location of the drywall fireplace, as well as its appearance: draw a plan for the location of the drywall fireplace in the interior, take the necessary measurements and make the main drawings on a scale. The drawing should contain not only design sketches, the object being executed relative to its location, but also a scheme for fastening the structure, the frame of the drywall fireplace.

Calculate the desired depth of the drywall fireplace, the length and height of the structure for the possibility of laying electrical wiring.

Work progress

To simplify the work, it is recommended to calculate the material consumption from the drawing and dimensions. Making a fireplace with your own hands from drywall is a rather laborious process, so it’s better to spend time on its exact layout first, so that later you can complete the design without a doubt. The layout is easy to make from packaging cardboard and polystyrene on PVA glue or simply on adhesive tape.

Exact dimensions and fine finishes are not required - a ready-made plasterboard fireplace model hastily painted with quick-drying white paint.

IMPORTANT! If we are talking about connecting an electric fireplace to heat a room or its imitation (banal - a screen with a flame image), the electrical supply must be carried out in advance. When attaching a metal frame to the walls of the room, remember about the routes of electrical cables so that you do not inadvertently damage the electrical network with screws.

Do-it-yourself false fireplace: estimated cost

  • in Moscow - from 1,800 rubles / work, about 2,100 rubles / materials;
  • in Kyiv - from 450 hryvnia / work, about 520 hryvnia / materials.

Many city dwellers in search of unique ways to decorate their own apartments do not stop focusing on fireplaces. These heaters perform well in private homes, where they perform the functions of a heating system. In apartments, it is more often a design element. Although practice shows that even here in apartments, if the fireplace is correctly assembled, it will work and release 15% of the heat required for heating.

The construction of a fireplace requires skill and high financial costs. And some residents of the city can not afford them. Therefore, designers offer a simplified version, but no less high-quality and beautiful, this is a drywall fireplace.

Moreover, you can, you just need to know the manufacturing technology. And if you veneer it with natural materials, then comfort and coziness in the apartment is provided.

Yes, this is not a fireplace that will generate heat from burning wood. But if you install an electrical device that simulates a fireplace in it.

Or use more modern technologies that have appeared on the market today, then you will be guaranteed a full feeling of a burning flame.

Design Choice

To begin with, the first step is to establish where in the room the fireplace should be installed.

If you turned to a professional designer who makes up for you, then this specialist will figure out for himself where and what to install and how to place.

But if you have taken on its role, then when creating the interior it will be necessary to take into account some rules for installing a fireplace.

Everything will depend on the size of the room where it will be placed. If the room is small, then you can use two options: corner and in the form of a niche, slightly protruding from the wall.

The first option has several advantages:

  • Small sizes.
  • Does not take up useful space.
  • Fits well with the design.
  • Can be used as or as a nightstand.

The only negative is that the corner option can not always be used. Usually the corners of the room near the window are covered with curtains, on the opposite side there is an entrance door in one corner, and on the other side the fireplace is not so clearly visible.

Therefore, it is best to give preference to the usual front element. Moreover, it is possible to build a small structure that will fit well into the interior of the room and will not take up much space.

Advantages of decorative fireplaces

  1. Simplicity of design.
  2. Economical in construction (this applies to both materials and the process itself).
  3. With the help of drywall, you can build a fireplace of any shape and configuration. The end result can be an incredible shape, the limit depends only on the imagination of the person.
  4. It is possible to quickly dismantle and transfer to another place.
  5. Plasterboard fireplaces can be installed in any room, even the smallest.
  6. It is a safe building because there is no heating source.
  7. For cladding, any finishing materials can be used. By the way, it is they who can increase the cost.

Types of false plasterboard fireplaces

There are three main categories:

  • Reliable;
  • Conditional;
  • Symbolic.

What are their differences from each other? authentic fireplaces have the dimensions of real wood structures. It's almost impossible to tell them apart. In such fireplaces, fireboxes are most often installed, where biofuel or another type of fuel that has appeared on the market today is burned. If I may say so, this is a reliable copy of a real fireplace.

Conditional items It is a kind of portal structure. It must necessarily protrude from the wall, most often not very much. But the feeling of the fireplace itself is fully present. Usually, an electric burner is installed in such niches.

Symbolic fireplaces- This is an imitation on the wall of the image. Basically, it's a simple drywall drawing on a wall. It carries a purely symbolic meaning and no functional load.

Currently, using the latest technologies and building materials, craftsmen, making plasterboard fireplaces, offer full-fledged structures in which firewood can be burned. In fact, this is a real fireplace, expensive and laborious. If this option is chosen, then the installation site is determined by the load-bearing wall, combined with the street, because the chimney will have to be removed.

Design

Creating a project or sketch is a simple necessity in this business. Especially when it comes to. Fortunately, drywall soaked in water is easy to bend. So this shouldn't be a problem.

First of all, the dimensions of the future fireplace are applied to the wall. Please note that the entire design must fully comply with this product, where there is a base, a firebox and other elements. Therefore, it is necessary to take care that they are present in this design as well. This is especially true of the base, which can be poured from concrete mortar or laid out from bricks or blocks.

Drywall false fireplace project

Although a false fireplace does not require such a serious approach, so the base can be made from a frame. But there is one nuance that should be taken into account. If there is a child in the house, then the base is best made of durable material. Sometimes children use such fireplaces in their games, so that under their weight, the plasterboard base shelf can break through. By the way, the size of the base will completely depend on the width of the fireplace itself.

Plasterboard fireplace drawing

Professionals, before starting work, make a model of the future fireplace. This makes it easier to perceive what will end up in your room in the end result. Then, on a scale, its dimensions are transferred to the wall.

Stages of building a drywall fireplace

Like all installation and construction processes, the construction of a drywall fireplace is divided into several stages.

Stage number 1 - frame construction

To do this, you can use PN guides or rack-mount PS profiles. First of all, according to the markings applied on the wall, profiles are installed that will create the outline of the future fireplace. They are attached to the wall with self-tapping screws on plastic dowels.

Plasterboard corner fireplace frame

Now exactly the same contour is being constructed, which will be based on the installed crossbars. Someone first assembles the circuit separately, the Zetam fastens it in finished form to the structure installed against the wall.

Someone collects it in parts, fastening it with crossbars. In fact, the frame of the fireplace is already ready. It remains only to build a firebox. To do this, racks are installed at a certain distance from the outer contour from above and from the sides. The distance is determined by the size of the firebox itself. All this should be indicated on the sketch, which is why it is so important to have it on hand.

Wooden frame option for a fireplace

Please note that all dimensions must be exactly observed. It doesn't matter if this size is internal or external. A slight deviation can lead to a skew that cannot be corrected by drywall itself. If you are installing an electric fireplace inside the box, then you need to take care of the connection point in advance, that is, the socket. It should be inside the box on the wall.

Stage number 2 - sheathing the box with drywall

At this stage, all plating technologies of any design are used. That is, you will need to cut strips from the sheet exactly in size that will correspond to the dimensions of the installed box.

Then these sheets are fastened with self-tapping screws at their destination. If a fireplace is simple in shape and design, then the sheathing can be done in one layer. If the configuration is complex, then it is sheathed in two layers.

Stage number 3 - finishing

As mentioned above, fantasy is included here, there are no restrictions in this regard. If it is decided to simply paint the surfaces, then the entire structure will have to be treated with putty. For this, a fine-grained finishing material is used, which is applied to drywall in a thin layer.

Please note that surfaces must be primed and dry well before applying putty.

Practice shows that one layer of putty is not enough to achieve maximum evenness of the surface, so the fireplace is primed again, dried and puttied again. If the result satisfied you, then you can proceed to grinding. To do this, you will need fine-grained sandpaper.
