We make a bench. How to make a comfortable and beautiful bench yourself. How to disassemble pallets

According to the classic, everything in a person should be beautiful. This also applies to everything that surrounds us. Creating comfort in your country house, do not forget about the backyard. A smooth lawn or flower beds serve as a decoration for your garden, it doesn’t matter at all, the main thing is that there is a place where to sit down and take a break from the bustle of the city and household chores. A garden bench with your own hands is a great opportunity to bring individuality to your summer cottage. Let's look at some interesting options for man-made benches and figure out how to make some of them.

The simplicity of design and the availability of materials allow even a novice craftsman to decide to create such an element of the interior. The best material for creating a garden bench is wood or stone. They will perfectly fit into the design of the infield and create a feeling of unity with nature. It is possible to create a bench from improvised materials. Surely a zealous owner will have a couple of obsolete wooden chairs that can be used.

Whatever you decide to make a bench from, the first thing you need in any case is a design project, and to it the necessary drawings and an assembly diagram. Drawings of garden benches for every taste can be found on the Internet, but if you wish, you can develop them yourself, after all, we all received the primary skills for creating them at school, and the design of the bench is not so complicated.

  1. height - about 40-50 cm;
  2. seat width - an average of 55 cm;
  3. back height - 30-50 cm;
  4. the height of the armrests from the seat is 15-20 cm.

It is these dimensions that will allow you to comfortably sit on the bench.

Do-it-yourself wooden bench

Consider for a start the option of a simple bench made of wood.

Below is an approximate drawing of a similar bench for a summer residence with your own hands. Its most difficult element is the seat of a slightly concave shape. The dimensions of the elements depend on the final dimensions of the bench. We offer the following sizes of individual elements:

  • seat boards - 25x100x1200 mm (4 pcs.);
  • legs - 100x100x440 mm (4 pcs.);
  • front upper drawers - 25x100x1200 mm (2 pcs.);
  • lower front drawers - 25x100x1200 mm (2 pcs.);
  • seat board supports - 25x100x400 mm (6 pcs.).

Prepare all the necessary tools and materials and you can start. You will need:

  • suitable boards and timber for the manufacture of the seat and bench legs;
  • jigsaw;
  • grinder;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver;
  • antiseptic for wood processing;
  • stain;

Operating procedure:

  1. First of all, cut out all the necessary parts according to the list with a jigsaw.

Pay special attention to the preparation of the seat supports. Before sawing, make the appropriate markup to simplify the task.

  1. Sections must be treated with sandpaper to protect against splinters.
  2. When the parts are ready, carefully treat them with an antiseptic to protect the wood from decay and insects. This will extend the life of the product.
  3. Start the assembly by attaching the seat supports to the upper drawers according to the diagram.

Advice! Make all connections with self-tapping screws. The connection with nails is short-lived, quickly loosens, such a bench will lose stability.

  1. Attach the seat boards to the resulting frame by deepening the heads of the self-tapping screws.

  1. Attach the legs last, securing them with the bottom sides for strength.
  1. An already assembled bench can be covered with wood stain. This tool will help give the tree a noble look of a more expensive material and emphasize its structure.

Such a do-it-yourself bench made of natural material will decorate any garden and will not create gaps in your wallet.

Bench with wooden back

A bench with a back is an option that is undoubtedly more comfortable than a bench. And do not think that doing it yourself is more difficult. You can, for example, create a do-it-yourself ethno-style bench with a backrest from a solid log.

To seat such a bench, you just need to saw a log. The second part of the log can be used to make the legs of the bench. These parts are connected to each other with metal pins.

First, holes are made at the fastener points, the diameter of which is slightly smaller than the diameter of the pin. First, the pin is driven into one part with a sledgehammer at about half the height, then the second part is pushed on top.

Advice! Before striking the material with a sledgehammer, place an unnecessary piece of board on top, this will prevent damage to the surface of the material.

The back of such a bench can be made from a log of a smaller diameter. To fix the back, you can use metal elements or, for lack of availability, take wooden ones.

Do not forget to treat the wood with a protective antiseptic.

Bench - swing

The garden bench can also be made in the form of a swing. This option is especially relevant if you have children, they will obviously like it.

Decided to make a swing with your own hands? In addition to the usual materials for making a bench and a bench, you will need strong fastening material, such as a rope or chain, as well as metal chains and carabiners. It will be possible to decorate the swing with the help of multi-colored pillows made, if possible, from moisture-resistant materials.

Bench - sandbox

Another bench option that will definitely please your children is a sandbox with a lid.

A very convenient option that will fit into the country landscape design, does not take up much space, will appeal to children and adults. Approximate dimensions: 1.20x1.45x0.3 m.

When making such a bench - a sandbox, you can be calm, country cats will not get to the sand, and the ubiquitous magpies will not carry away small toys.

Bench - flower bed

Fans of violent flowering surround themselves with flowers everywhere. For them, we can recommend making a bench - a flower bed.

Even a novice master can do such a bench. It is necessary to build a wooden flooring between the two boxes. Easier - just nowhere. The boxes are filled with earth and favorite plants are planted there. A green corner made in this way will decorate any summer cottage.

Benches from improvised materials

To create a designer bench, it is not at all necessary to purchase material, even if it is inexpensive. You can make an excellent bench from improvised materials. For example, old wooden chairs.

To create such a simple, but very elegant bench, assemble a frame from a 50x30 mm timber of the same length as your bench seat should be. For two people, 120 mm is enough. Attach the chair backs to it as shown. For fastenings, use long self-tapping screws.

Color the structure created in this way in the color you need.

For the manufacture of the seat, you can use a sheet of plywood, fiberboard or wooden furniture board. Saw the seat slightly wider than the frame. If desired, it can be covered with batting or foam rubber and upholstery fabric or leather substitute. A furniture stapler is very useful for tightening the material.

The bench is ready! It remains to find a suitable place for her and enjoy the result.

Another improvised material for quickly creating a bench can be construction pallets.

If you have the right tools, it will not be difficult to assemble a bench of any design from them. The main thing is to carefully process the pallet boards with sandpaper and an antiseptic protective agent (this rule works for all wooden products planned for outdoor use). In addition, such a bench can be painted in your favorite color or covered with wood stain. You can decorate it with a simple jute rope and metal rivets, as well as pillows of various sizes, colors and textures.

As you can see, a handmade garden bench is not only a place to sit. It is enough to show a little imagination and a corner for relaxing with the whole family is ready. If you make it yourself, it will save you money and time looking for the right option, which sometimes you just can't find. If you do not have sufficient carpentry skills, create a bench from improvised materials, this does not require much labor, but it looks no less aesthetically pleasing.

Items of garden furniture are necessary to equip a place to relax at your summer cottage at your discretion. Photos of benches in the garden look attractive. Any master can make such furniture himself.

First you need to decide on the choice of material for the future product and choose the right design solution.

Work materials

Garden bench can be made from various materials. Each of them has its own advantages.

Plastic bench

This piece of furniture has many advantages. Plastic products are affordable, they do not require special care, they are easy to disassemble and assemble. Today, plastic is presented in rich colors.

However, there are also disadvantages. A plastic item looks cheaper than a wooden item. Under the influence of direct sunlight, it quickly fades, and its surface may be deformed.

Wood for garden furniture

To make original benches for summer cottages, craftsmen often use wood. Wood is easy to process, the material looks noble, and installation does not take much time.

The main requirements are the absence of defects and good drying.

stone products

The naturalness of the material is its undeniable advantage; it attracts with its natural beauty. In finished products, it looks luxurious and stylish.

Natural stone items are easy to make with your own hands. However, the material has not only advantages, but also disadvantages:

  • It is unhealthy to sit on a cold stone.
  • The bench is installed exclusively permanently.

What about metal?

Metal benches are a great decoration for a recreation area. The cold forging method, like the hot forging method, allows you to create beautiful designs.

In addition, metal is perfectly combined with glass or wood.

What should be the ideal shop?

Among all the requirements, the main ones can be distinguished:

  • Comfort. The bench needs to be ergonomic. A bench with a back is a good option.
  • The product must be capable of withstanding heavy loads. The master needs to choose only high-quality materials and accessories.

Bench design features

A summer resident who wants to ennoble the landscape around the house should know how to make a bench with his own hands. You must first determine the dimensions.

Dimensions - 1.5 mX0.4 m, height - 0.45 m (seat) and 900 m (back). The back is made at an angle of 18 or 20 degrees. It is important to correctly execute the drawings of the bench, then the work will not argue.

The master will need to prepare the following:

  • Primer, varnish;
  • Special sandpaper for wood;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Electroplaner;
  • Electric jigsaw;
  • Self-tapping screws 40X40;
  • Blanks for front and rear legs, as well as for backrest holders;
  • Wooden boards with dimensions 1500X150 and thickness from 35 mm to 40 mm.

Making a wooden structure with your own hands

It's good when you can find boards with the right dimensions on the market.

When there was no suitable option on the construction market, the master will have to arm himself with a jigsaw in order to cut the material himself. A miter saw will help speed up the process.

Note!

Finished blanks must be processed. The surface of the boards for the backrest with the seat needs to be sanded. The ends are processed using an electric planer, the best option is to make them with a rounded shape.

The next step is to give the required angle of inclination, in this case we are talking about the rear legs of the bench. These elements serve as a framework. Marking is applied to the prepared parts.

We measure the height - 0.4 m. It is necessary to make a cut equal to 20 degrees to form the angle of inclination. Between the legs of the bench in front and behind the distance should be 0.28 m. A beam with a size of 0.5 m connects the legs. It is better when the strapping is performed not only from above, but also from below.

The sidewalls are connected as soon as the assembly of the main parts is completed. The boards are fastened with self-tapping screws to the strapping bars that are on top. Between the blanks leave gaps to remove moisture.

When mounting the backrest, the board that comes first is attached at a distance of 0.2 m from the seat, and the second - 0.38 m.

Note!

You can proceed to the final coating of the product. For this, impregnation with varnish for outdoor use is used. Such means will help to provide reliable protection against any harmful actions from the outside.

How to create a metal structure?

A master can create a comfortable place for a recreation area using the cold forging technique. It is better to start with models that have angular shapes, they are easier to make.

Detailed instructions

We determine the dimensions (length - 1.5 m, height - 0.8 or 0.9 m, width - 0.4 or 0.5 m).

We make blanks for the frame from a cut pipe. It will be necessary to prepare 2 segments with dimensions of 0.4 m and 2 more fragments of 1.5 m each. We connect these parts into a rectangle and weld them. To make the structure more durable, we weld 2 stiffeners.

To make blanks for the legs, we cut the metal pipe into 4 parts, the length of each should be 0.4 m. The blanks are attached to the corners of the bench. To reinforce the legs, stiffening ribs are additionally installed.

Note!

For the manufacture of the back you will need 2 blanks. The length of one should be 1.5 m, and the other 0.44 mm. We weld the blanks for the back together and weld to the seat. We must not forget about the angle of inclination. For the rest to be comfortable, it must be at least 15 or 20 degrees.

The backrest can also be reinforced with stiffeners.

At the last stage, the seams are cleaned. The surface of the frame is coated with a primer.

If you plan to make a product with figured elements, then the implementation of such a task will require more time.

Arrangement of a personal plot is carried out by various methods: sheds and gazebos are installed, paths are laid, flower beds and flower beds are broken. The final nuance is garden furniture. To equip a small recreation area, a garden bench with a do-it-yourself backrest is suitable: you can find drawings and diagrams of beautiful structures, as well as recommendations for their creation in this article.

Types of designs and photos of garden benches

The modern range of garden furniture is quite extensive. Classification of products is carried out on the basis of such signs:

  • characteristics;
  • material;
  • functionality.

DIY photo of garden benches, their functional side

Functional features of furniture are valued along with their practicality and durability. All products are divided into two large groups:

  • benches used exclusively for sitting;
  • multifunctional benches (the product can perform several functions - be a bench, rocking chair or table).

Many homeowners install swing benches. To create them, materials of various types are used, and the structures themselves can be given an interesting shape. To make it convenient to use such a bench, it is imperative to build a canopy over it. It will provide protection from the sun and rain.

Popular for making do-it-yourself benches with a back, having a stationary type of placement. Most often they are made of concrete or brick, and a special place is selected for installation. Such products are not afraid of the influence of the sun and moisture.

There are folding benches with small dimensions and a mobile design. They are useful if the suburban area is rarely used. During the absence of the owners, folding benches are removed to the garage for storage or to the house.

Photo of country benches with their own hands made of wood and metal

Metal products have the highest strength characteristics. They are reliable, durable and can be used throughout the year. Metal structures are unpretentious in terms of maintenance. It is enough to periodically cover their surface with an anti-corrosion agent that will protect the benches from the harmful effects of moisture.

A bench made entirely of metal will have a very massive appearance, so modern designs are made using forged patterns. It should be remembered that for this you need to acquire a welding machine.

Most of the owners of suburban areas, who decide to make a bench for a summer residence with their own hands, prefer wood. This material becomes the basis for creating benches with a beautiful design, excellent performance and warm texture. Regardless of the design of the garden or yard, wooden products can always fit harmoniously into the landscape.

In order to protect the surface of the product, it is necessary to cover it with a varnish or paint. This will prevent damage to the wood, which is caused by insects, fungi, mold, as well as moisture and sun. Using a lacquer as a finish will help preserve the natural grain of the wood.

Photo of do-it-yourself benches made of stone

If you prefer practical options for benches, you should pay attention to products made of stone. This type of material is characterized by low cost and long service life, and the structures are durable, reliable and aesthetically attractive.

The stone belongs to the category of materials of natural origin. Despite this, the designs of such benches will not always be able to support any design and style of the garden. Stone elements must be present on the site as an addition. The shops look especially advantageous against the backdrop of a residential building, partially made of stone.

A good ensemble will be made of stone:

  • steps;
  • tracks;
  • reservoirs;
  • gabions;
  • flower beds.

The supports of fences, arbors and awnings can be made of stone partially or completely. If at least one of these elements is present on the site, stone shops will always come in handy. However, it should be remembered that such products do not have a back.

DIY photo of garden benches: successful homemade products made of plastic and other materials

Plastic products have a number of advantages, which include:

  • simplicity and low weight of the structure, due to which the transportation of the material does not cause difficulties, and the bench itself can be moved from one place to another;
  • profitability;
  • an extensive selection of color solutions, which allows you to make a product that will subsequently fit well into the design of the garden;
  • practicality (folding-type structures are easily disassembled and stacked in the trunk and also easily assembled on site).

Combined combinations of materials of different texture, texture, color and origin are used not only for decorative purposes. The most common option is a combination of stone and wood.

Designs made of wood and complemented by stone or metal elements look original. In such projects, wood creates a soft and beautiful texture, while stone and metal are responsible for strength.

Examples and technologies for creating garden benches and benches with your own hands

The designs of the bench and bench have some distinctive features. Building a bench is the easiest way to organize a seating area in the garden. The product does not have a back and, unlike a bench, has a simple external design.

A do-it-yourself wooden bench with a back can have a more complex decorative design:

  • non-standard form;
  • armrests;
  • design, decorated with carved and forged elements.

The simplest ideas for creating garden benches

To revive the design of a simple bench, it is not necessary to come up with a complex drawing and puzzle over the creation of additional accessories for the garden. It is enough to use two wooden boxes and several boards.

The boxes in this case will serve as supports. After making the bench, they can be filled with earth and organize a small flower bed. A seat is made from the boards, which is installed between the boxes. The material must be sanded well with sandpaper, remove all irregularities and burrs.

Rice. 1-1. Scheme of a bench with wooden flower boxes: 1 - arrangement of a bench and calculation of materials: A - logs (2x4 boards 17 1/2" long - 6 pcs., 2x4 boards 20 1/2" long - 4 pcs.); B - drawer bottom (3/4 plywood 20 1/2” x 20 1/2” - 2 pcs.); C - trims (1x4 boards 23 1/2” long - 16 pieces); D - side lamellas (boards 1x6 25” long - 32 pieces); E - trims for facing the top (2x4 boards 45" long - 8 pieces); F - seat frame (2x4 boards 63" long - 2 pcs., 2x4 boards 17 1/2" long - 2 pcs.); G - cross bars (1x2 boards 17 1/2” long - 5 pieces); H - seat (boards 1x4 60" long - 5 pcs.); 2 - side facing; 3 - installation of the walls of the flower box; 4 - mounting dimensions of the walls of the box; 5 - diagram of the device for the bottom of the flower box

Wood structures have a certain disadvantage. The material itself requires constant care, and in this case the tree is also in contact with the soil, it is necessary to periodically water the plants. To make the shop more practical, wooden boxes can be replaced with concrete or stone pedestals. Concrete flower beds can be made independently or purchased at the store.

For the seat, you should use processed boards or half a log. The choice of raw materials depends on the style in which the design of the garden or patio is made. It is recommended to fix the seat with metal corners fixed to concrete using dowels, and to wood using through bolts or self-tapping screws.

As supports, you can use flowerpots with dwarf trees or ornamental bushes. The only, but very important requirement is that the container must be very strong. A hole is cut into the seat in the shape of a flowerpot in the place where the legs of the benches are usually located. The size of the opening should be sufficient to allow the plant to grow and care for it, however, it should not exceed the size of the container. Essentially, a plank seat is placed on top of the flowerpots and fixed by gravity and the weight of those seated.

Making garden benches from wood with your own hands in ethno style

Ethno and rustic design styles are often used in interior design. A country house, cottage or cottage is a great place to create an eco-friendly and natural corner suitable for a family vacation. This design can be continued in the garden. To do this, it is enough to make a bench with a backrest with your own hands from logs (Fig. 1) and other natural materials.

Do-it-yourself technology for making a country bench from a log

To form a seat, it is enough to saw a tree trunk along. This can be done exactly in the middle (in the diameter zone) or by moving the saw closer to the edge (in the medium diameter zone). The back is made from a thinner tree trunk, or you can cut closer to the edge. As a result, this element must be thinner and lighter than the seat part.

Legs can be made from the remains of a log. They are connected to the seat part with metal pins. It is done like this:

  • In the parts to be connected, holes are made for the pins in the appropriate places. The diameter of the holes should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the fastener.
  • The pin is driven into one of the holes approximately in the middle of its length.
  • On top of the free edge of the pin, the second part to be connected is placed and also hammered. In this case, the blows fall not on the pin, but on the wood.

  • Fasteners are hammered with a sledgehammer or hammer. Since wood is a fairly soft material in its structure, hammer blows can damage its surface. To avoid this, you need to put an unnecessary board under the instrument.

    Pins provide a reliable connection of all parts. To strengthen the fixation, you can install 2-3 pins.

    Do-it-yourself ethno style in garden benches with a backrest: additional ideas

    In the ethno style, you can create a design with a non-standard design. The highlight can be, for example, the manufacture of a bench using curved branches of different diameters. Before assembling the product, these branches are processed and skinned. In other words, the bark is removed from them, and then the surface is polished with sandpaper. An unedged board must be used to assemble the seat. It is processed in a similar way.

    Various options for wooden benches created in ethno style

    If your summer cottage has a wicker fence, you can use the same design option with some changes. Short seat boards can be replaced with long ones by placing them along. The back is formed according to the principle of weaving from branches of medium thickness, which bend well.

    To make a wicker back, it is not necessary to have any special skills. You may not get a very neat result, but this is not necessary. The back should be simple and unobtrusive, coarse weaving will only increase its decorative properties. Branches can be placed tightly or, conversely, leave gaps between them so that your bench “breathes”.

    A bench as an alternative to a do-it-yourself cottage

    Despite the absence of a back, this scheme (Fig. 3-1) for making a bench looks quite attractive due to the characteristics of the material from which it will be made. The design itself has a very simple structure, so everyone can handle the technology of its creation.

    For the legs you will need a rounded beam. If you have logs with a small diameter, you can save on the purchase of material and trim them yourself. The original appearance of the bench is obtained due to the fact that the bars are stacked one on top of the other and fixed. The result is a beautiful support for the product.

    Calculation of parameters and required materials

    The height of the bench can be adjusted according to your needs. This indicator also depends on the diameter of the timber that will be used in the work. To calculate the amount of material, you need to determine how many bars will be stacked one on top of the other to form the required height of one of the legs.

    Size chart:

    In our case, 5 bars are required, the length of which is 0.45 m. Calculation formula: 5x0.45 \u003d 2.25 m. Based on this, 4.5 m of timber (2.25x2) will be required to build two supports. The seat will consist of five boards 1.2 m long. For its manufacture, the following amount of material will be required: 5x1.2 \u003d 6 m.

    Initial stage: preparation of the material

    To begin with, boards for the seat are being prepared. The material is cut into the required number of boards of the appropriate length and processed. Sharp corners should be rounded off. Take advantage of the capabilities of a milling cutter or grinder for this. If you do not have such a tool at hand, it will be enough to process the edges with sandpaper.

    Grinding with sandpaper is a long and laborious process. To simplify your work, you can order the grinding of the material at the sawmill. After the boards are prepared, they need to be opened with a varnish composition. It can be a completely transparent varnish or a tinted composition (the choice of topcoat is up to you).

    The bars intended to form the legs of the bench are tightly stacked next to each other so that their edges form a straight line. Using a pencil and square, mark the areas where the fasteners will be installed. The lines should be distributed along the entire length in increments of 7-10 cm.

    Assembling a wooden structure: mounting fasteners

    Metal pins will be used as fasteners. An alternative replacement for them can be dowels made of wood. Holes are made for the installation of fasteners, the diameter of which is slightly smaller than the diameter of the pins, and the depth is half the length of the pin.

    To fix the parts, the fasteners will be hammered into one of the bars, and the next element will be pushed through the hole on top of it.

    The pin connection is also used in the process of creating, according to the drawings, a do-it-yourself bench made of wood, the design of which is equipped with a back. A qualitative result can be achieved only if all the holes are located strictly one above the other. As a result, all parts during assembly should form an even edge line.

    After drawing the marking lines, you need to measure the distance from the edge, which should be the same. For these purposes, it is recommended to create a template. It is enough to take a piece of the bar, the width of which is 1.5 cm. It will serve as a kind of limiter. In other words, a distance equal to the width of this bar will separate the holes from the edge. Attach the template exactly along the edge line and mark the intersections with the already existing perpendicular markings.

    The installation of the pins must be done in a checkerboard pattern, so you should place the holes not at each intersection of the lines, but through one. Holes are also made on the other side of the bar. They should be staggered in relation to the holes that were made earlier. As a result, when connecting the legs to the seat, each plank will have a pair of pins.

    The final stage of creating a bench made of wood

    From a technological point of view, the previously described type of connection can be considered correct. However, the scheme of its installation is quite complicated for a person who does not have the necessary skills.

    There is an easier way to fasten the structure:

  • The bars are stacked on top of each other.
  • Folded parts are fixed with clamps.
  • Through holes are made at three points (in the center and along the edges).
  • Through the holes, the parts are fastened with a long stud (do not forget to put washers under the nut and cap).

  • After that, the seat boards are nailed to these legs (on top) or you can make a pin connection in this place.

    When the assembly of the structure is completed, grind all the parts. Their surface should be as smooth as possible. After that, you can apply the finish coat. Use for this purpose a varnish composition or wood paint intended for outdoor use. It is better if the finish coat is translucent. In this way, you can leave the natural pattern of the wood visible.

    Do-it-yourself drawings of benches for giving: photos and descriptions

    The bench, due to the presence of a backrest, has a more convenient design than a bench. You can lean on it and relax your back. The capacity of such products can be different, but usually do-it-yourself drawings of wooden garden benches are made for 2-4 persons. This is done for the reason that the long structure needs to install an additional support. As a result, the process of creating a product becomes more complicated. In fact, there is enough space for 2-4 people, so you can limit yourself to making the simplest designs.

    Do-it-yourself garden bench with a backrest: design drawings for two persons

    To make a bench with a wooden back for this project (Fig. 4) with your own hands, you need to acquire the following tool:

    • drill;
    • a set of drills;
    • hacksaw;
    • planer.

    It will take you no more than one day to complete all the work on creating a bench. A square bar made of pine will be used as the main material. The parameters of its section are 6x6 cm. You will also need "twenty" boards. Before cutting these boards, they should be planed until parts with dimensions of 5.8x5.8 cm are obtained.

    Do-it-yourself bench for giving from a tree: step by step instructions

    The assembly of a bench from pine bars is carried out in the following sequence:

    • with the help of dowels and adhesive composition, we assemble the legs for the U-shaped sides. Then, using the same fastening method, we fix slats (5.8x2 cm) and prongs (3.5x3.5 cm) mounted on the sides on them;

    • to mark the locations of the reciprocal holes for mounting dowels, use a marker;
    • connect the sidewall and the longitudinally located rail. In order to mark the position of the sidewall, a 2 cm thick spacer should be used;
    • fix all elements while drilling holes with clamps. This will allow you to achieve accurate mating between the connected parts of the structure;
    • before performing the final assembly, sand all the elements well.

    The last stage of construction is the application of a protective agent and a top coat.

    Do-it-yourself garden bench from improvised materials: the use of pallets

    From such improvised materials as pallets, you can create an interesting bench design (Fig. 5). It can be installed not only in the garden, but also on the terrace and even inside the country house. Three pallets are required for work.

    Manufacturing steps:

    • one of the pallets is divided in half. These halves will subsequently be the back of the product. Cutting must be done so that after assembling the parts of the back and seat form a figure of a geometrically correct shape, and all edges coincide;

    • two other pallets are knocked together with nails. We fix the back halves to them;
    • a mattress of the appropriate size should be placed on top of the structure. You can use cushions from an old sofa, reupholstering them first, or sew new ones. You can also put a few small pillows on the back.

    Do-it-yourself drawings of a garden bench with a wooden back: Transformer design

    For the manufacture of the structure, you will need to purchase pine lumber.

    Materials for work:

    Manufacturing technology of a transformer bench

    Following the step-by-step instructions, you can create an interesting bench, the design of which can be transformed into a table with two benches (Fig. 6).

    The main stages of making a bench:

    • having created the supporting parts according to the drawing, attach 3 boards to one of them. The seat will be formed from these boards. At the same time, do not forget to step back from the end part by 5 cm. 4 self-tapping screws must be installed in each board. Two of them will fix the seat to the support on one side, the rest are designed to fix the seat to the other support (on the other side of the product);

    • for each nodal assembly zone, it will be necessary to install 4 fasteners;
    • after all the parts are prepared for work, the legs, which have a support for the back and seat, should be cut down from the end at an angle of about 75?. Using self-tapping screws designed for working with wood, connect the legs in pairs with the middle bars. The optimal length of fasteners is 5 cm;

    • next is the back. In the process of transformation, it turns into a countertop. Locate the longitudinal edge of the support board. Its length is 32 cm. Here you need to attach three boards 150 cm long. In this case, the indent from the end in this case will already be 8 cm;
    • boards are mounted so that a gap of 1 cm is formed between adjacent elements;
    • in the support board, you need to make 3 holes, the diameter of which is 0.8 cm. It is better to perform this procedure in advance. These holes will be used to fix the back of the bench in a horizontal position.

    The final stage of the construction of the transformer bench

    To create axes of rotation, make 2 holes in the top of the rear leg. Fixing the back to the base of the product will be carried out by a pair of M8 bolts.

    One of the holes made will be axial, the second - ordinary. To simplify the operation of the bench, equip the bolt in the area of \u200b\u200bthe axial hole with a nut with 6 edges, for the second, a wing nut is suitable. She should bend her mustache. Due to this simple manipulation, fasteners can be turned away / wrapped without the use of additional tools, but only by hand force.

    Upon completion of all work, you need to check the design for operability. Set the backrest in an inclined position and secure it with bolts. Remove the fastening element from the hole and move the backrest to a horizontal position. To fix it, place the bolt in its original place and secure with a nut. The design is completely ready for operational use.

    When creating benches, you can experiment. The main thing is that at the same time the product turned out to be durable and practical.

    A bench is an essential attribute of a summer cottage or house adjoining territory. Often on the site there is a place not for one, but for several benches. One in the yard, another in the garden, the third at the gate. A do-it-yourself bench with a backrest is probably the easiest and most useful project that you can do in the country.

    The beautiful wooden texture of the bench will look harmonious in any garden, especially if you use not just boards for the bench, but all parts of the tree that are available to you in the garden.

    In order to make a simple bench, you do not need special skills or expensive tools, and wood in the country is one of the most affordable materials.

    If you have never made a bench yourself, we will show you the whole basic process, based on which you can create your own little masterpieces.

    We hope these beautiful benches will inspire you to design your own.

    Do-it-yourself bench with a back

    To begin with, we propose to master a simple design that is easy to manufacture and which has good rigidity and stability.

    Wooden bench. Preparation of materials

    In order to make a bench, you will need:

    • 2 short front supports [A];
    • 2 long rear supports (the back will be attached to them) [A];
    • 8 short crossbars for tying supports and stiffening [B];
    • long boards for the seat and backs (their number depends on their width and the desired dimensions of the bench) [C].

    If you are planning to make a long bench with a backrest with your own hands, then make sure that your boards that you have prepared for the seat will not sag under the weight of the people sitting on it. And if the boards really sag, then this can be fixed - you can collect another support and put it in the middle.

    Every detail needs to be polished so that after resting on the bench you do not have to pick out splinters from various interesting places.

    Remember also that if you want to dig in a bench, then your supports should be at least 40cm longer.

    Garden bench. Execution of work

    After your parts are cut to size and sanded, you can start assembling. For this, it is better to use self-tapping screws, but if you do not have a screwdriver, then the bench can be knocked down with nails.

    It is important to fasten the crossbars with at least two self-tapping screws to each support as shown in the picture. And the greater the distance between the screws, the more rigid the structure will be.

    Now it remains only to paint and let the paint dry.

    And here's what you can get. You can give the bench a different look without changing the design. Just take a more roughly processed wood, and the result is a completely different thing! Although structurally its differences are minimal, and it is done in exactly the same way.

    DIY bench

    But even if it seemed too complicated for you, then for you there is a design of a bench with a back, which is done with a hacksaw and a hammer in just a matter of hours.

    All you need is six boards of the same thickness (preferably at least 40mm).

    Her scheme is elementary simple.

    After all the parts are cut to size and sanded, it is assembled in a few minutes!

    Only it is better to drill holes for self-tapping screws in advance so that the board does not split during assembly.

    This bench looks concise and modern.
    And this is not surprising, because there is nothing superfluous in this design. Each structural element is absolutely necessary and at the same time minimally sufficient. Your bench with backrest can be made in any way, we have shown only two of the simplest.

    Benches photo

    If you enjoy working with wood, you may want to expand your skills and add new original details to your bench.

    If you are uprooting stumps in the country, consider that you have become the proud owner of a unique material for your next bench, which you will make with your own hands.

    Often those of us who love and know how to do something with our own hands are simply embarrassed to waste our time on this “nonsense” - it’s more important to dig up a garden in time.

    The pleasure that you will get when working on your garden bench project will bring you really happy moments.
    And those around you who were puffing - why are you busy with a frivolous business, will be proud of your bench, which you made yourself, and tell everyone that you are so unexpectedly talented.

    And we are sure that these successes will inspire you to try new ideas, because do-it-yourself benches are always more practical and cozier than ordinary standard ones.

    Do you want to design a chair, but find it difficult to determine the dimensions and angles that guarantee maximum comfort? Get acquainted with the basic principles that have become the norm in furniture production. Suppose you want to make a chair for an adult 178 cm tall, sitting upright.

    To make it easier to imagine the construction process, we have marked the main dimensions and angles for the seat, backrest and armrests with letter indexes shown in the figures. Now let's try to apply them to a chair that looks right and is as comfortable as possible.

    Seat First

    A. To ensure that the knees of the seated person are comfortably bent at a 90-100” angle and the feet rest on the floor, position the seat at a height of 405-455 mm above the floor. When determining the height for an upholstered seat with a padded cushion, consider the collapsed thickness of the cushion by subtracting half the cushion thickness from the total height of the seat above the floor.

    B. To provide clearance between the front edge of the seat and the legs of the seated person, make the seat 380-450 mm deep.

    C. Choose seat width 8 within 405-510mm. Depending on the style and your preferences, the seat can be tapered from the front to the back by 50-76 mm (25-38 mm on each side). The wide front edge gives freedom to the legs of the sitter, and the narrower back gives more freedom to his elbows.

    For additional comfort, in particular if the seat does not have a padded cushion, tilt it towards the backrest by 5-8°.

    It also prevents slipping forward.

    An office or work chair does not need a rear seat tilt - a horizontal seat is more convenient for tilting forward towards the desktop.

    Now the back

    E. To provide back support that does not restrict the shoulder blades, make the backrest 305-405 mm high for spare (for guests) chairs and 500-510 mm for ordinary ones.

    F. Backrest tilt - about 5° for regular chairs and up to 15° for spare chairs. Keep in mind that as the backrest inclination increases, the seat inclination also needs to be increased (the angle between the backrest and the seat must be between 90-100°) in order to prevent

    And finally the armrests

    H. To keep your forearms on the armrests without lifting your shoulders, position the armrests 180-230mm above the seat. But first, measure the distance from the floor to the lower edge of the dining table drawer so that the chair with armrests can be freely pushed under the table.
    I, J and K. Make the armrests at least 200mm long and 50mm wide with a distance of about 480mm between them.

    Initially, there was a drawing of the simplest wooden bench for giving. They used it and made a product. After the implementation of the project and the analysis of design errors, conclusions appeared based on personal experience. So, it was decided to simplify the project as much as possible: to reduce material consumption and increase the stability of the structure. All this reflects the drawing of the garden bench, presented below.

    In this bench, there are no longitudinal sides, the back legs and the base of the backrest are made of separate bars, and the connections of the side racks with the crossbars are made in half a tree to increase resistance to loosening of the fasteners.

    materials

    Bench base: legs, transverse drawers are made of a bar 50x50. For the back and seat, a 25x150 board is used, although you can use a board of any width that is available. DIY wooden bench has the following overall dimensions:

    • width - 1820 mm,
    • height - 860 mm,
    • depth - 700 mm.

    Wood screws are used for fastening, however, if the budget allows, furniture bolts can also be used. This, of course, will complicate the assembly process somewhat, since you will have to pre-drill and pre-drill holes for bolts and nuts. But the final look will be more "brutal".

    Assembly process

    The sequence of work is as follows: first, the side racks-bases are assembled, then the seat and back are sheathed.

    We rest on a bench with a back made with our own hands

    For convenience, the armrests are sawn out of the scraps of the board and the armrests are fixed, after which the almost finished garden bench is painted and installed in a permanent place.

    Racks

    First of all, blanks are cut from the prepared bar according to the following dimensions.

    For the backrest, an angle of 30 degrees is chosen, so both ends of the rear legs, the lower ends of the base of the backrest and the seat are sawn at this angle.

    to come back to the beginning
    In order to wooden bench for summer cottage not loosened over time, the legs with the upper crossbar are connected into half a tree.

    Back and seat

    They are stuffed with a board 25x150 end-to-end.

    But, as mentioned above, you can use a board of any width and lay it with equal gaps if the wooden bench is in the open. It is possible to produce butt stuffing. In this case, it is better to use the bench under a makeshift canopy, in a gazebo or on a covered terrace.

    Painting

    The color and type of paint is chosen, of course, according to desire and needs. The only condition: the paint must be for outdoor use. Their choice is great, from alkyd and acrylic to classic oil. Protective and decorative impregnations are very popular, as they not only protect the tree from decay, but also paint it in colors that imitate valuable species.

    There are a variety of options and modifications of benches and benches. However, the general principles of garden seating are the same.

    First, the bench must be protected from direct sunlight, especially at noon. And the openwork shadow from the trees is preferable to the solid shadow from the house. If possible, this zone is fenced off from the prevailing and cold northern winds with elements of vertical gardening. For this, any options for arranging "green" walls are suitable - both hedges and trellis gardening.

    If there is a danger of seasonal or periodic moisture on the site chosen for the bench, the ground should be prepared in advance. To do this, a drainage base is laid under the site from a layer of broken bricks or crushed stone, on top of which a coating of bulk materials (sand, gravel, river pebbles) or paving is arranged. Excess water can be drained by creating a slight overall slope so that it enters the drainage groove.

    A person feels more comfortable if the space behind him is filled with something. Therefore, it is better to turn the bench with its back to the wall of the house or place high landings behind it.

    At the same time, there should be enough space in front of the bench to freely place a pram or a small table.

    Benches can be placed in a secluded place, or, on the contrary, they can be installed where its most attractive corners are clearly visible. The appearance of the bench itself largely depends on where you intend to put it: by the pond, by the fire, near the house or near the ornamental garden. However, design intent must always be combined with practical expediency. Therefore, the main criterion for the construction of the bench is the convenience of its use;

    There are two types of benches - with a supporting back, designed for a long rest, and without a back - for a short one. The optimal seat height is 40-50 cm. With this height, your legs rest comfortably on the ground and rest. The width of the seat should be 50-55 cm. In order for the back of the bench to comfortably support the body, it is better to make the seat with a slight (5-12 °) inclination inward. The back itself should have an inclination of 15 to 40 °. The longitudinal slats of the backrest are mounted at a height of 16-18 cm from the seat, since at this level the bending of the spine begins. The height of the entire backrest is 35-45 cm. The armrests are set at a height of 15-20 cm from the seat. The height of the bench without a back, as well as its width, is 40-50 cm.

    For garden furniture, it is preferable to use hardwoods: aspen, oak, beech. Coniferous wood also comes into play, but it must be carefully deresined, otherwise the emitted resin will stain clothes. Resin removal is carried out with a solution of acetone in water (1:4 by weight). To pure acetone, to increase efficiency, you can add caustic soda (caustic soda) in a ratio of 20:4, respectively. The solution is washed several times with the surface of the wood, preferably with a brush, and then it is washed off several times with clean water.

    Bench with your own hands. (100 step by step photos)

    A paste-like deresining composition is also used, consisting of soda ash and potash, taken in a ratio of 6:5 (by weight). Water is added until creamy. This composition covers the surface 2-3 times, each time washing it off with warm water and wiping the surface with a brush.

    Do-it-yourself bench - the simplest design

    It will not be an exaggeration to say that a garden bench is a very necessary thing in a summer cottage. If you install a bench in the shade, then it will be pleasant to relax on it in the summer in hot weather. And in the evening it is no less pleasant to sit on it and watch the sunset.

    The question of purchasing a garden bench arose quite often for the above reasons, but the implementation was delayed for a long time, due to the fact that it was difficult to find the right option. Either I was not satisfied with the price or quality, or there were problems with transportation. Therefore, in the end I decided to make a bench with my own hands.

    Fig.1. Photo of the finished bench

    Having wondered how to make a garden bench, a number of fundamental requirements were identified that it must satisfy.

    • The bench should be made from affordable materials that are not difficult to bring to the country.
    • The bench should be comfortable.
    • The design of the bench should be such that you can make it yourself without the use of special tools.
    • The bench should be able to withstand outdoor conditions well, i.e. it should stand the whole summer season in the open air and not lose its appearance and functional qualities.

    Based on the described requirements, the garden bench project shown in the photo above was born. The material of the bench is wood. When making a wooden bench, special tools are not required. To protect against external adverse factors, the bench is varnished. So it satisfies most of the initial requirements.

    In my opinion, the most difficult and interesting thing about making a bench with your own hands is the design and ergonomics. The main ergonomic factors to consider are bench height, seat width, backrest angle, backrest width and bench length. It depends on these parameters whether it will be convenient to use the bench or not.

    Fig.3. Bench drawing

    All dimensions in the drawing are given in centimeters, only the angle of the backrest and the total height are not indicated, more on that later. And first I want to comment on some dimensions.

    • The length of the bench is chosen so that three people can easily fit on it. If you buy boards of a standard size of 6m, then it will take two boards to make a bench, and there will be practically no scraps left. In addition, you can easily transport boards 1.5 m long in a car.
    • The thickness of the board is 40mm, which ensures the rigidity of the bench structure.
    • The gaps between the boards on the back and on the seat are necessary so that water does not linger on the bench, because. the bench stands in the open air. As a result, taking into account the width of the board and the gaps, it turns out that the width of the seat is 40 cm, which is enough to comfortably sit an adult.
    • The backrest angle is about 18 degrees. How to make such an inclination will be described later.

    Now I want to say a few words about the design of the garden bench. As can be seen from the drawing and photo, the bench has four legs. In this case, the rear legs act as a holder for the backrest. To give rigidity, the legs are interconnected.

    Fig.4. Frame elements

    Work on the manufacture of benches begins with the fact that the boards are sawn to the desired size.

    • 2 boards 520mm long. Further, these boards are cut in length, resulting in 4 bars. These bars are needed to connect the legs and fasten the seat. Also, on these bars, the outer corner is removed so as not to cling to it with your feet.
    • 2 board 720 mm long. These boards are cut. They will act as a holder for the back and legs at the same time. Dimensions are shown in the drawing below.

    Fig.5. Bench drawing side view

    All these dimensions are given taking into account the fact that the final width of the board after planing and other processing is 140mm.

    After all the boards are cut, you need to cut them off to get rid of the burrs. It is also desirable to chamfer so that the edges are smooth. Then you can start assembling the garden bench.

    The legs are assembled first. The legs are connected to each other with the help of transverse means of self-tapping screws. After that, the seat and back boards are attached to the resulting legs. These boards are also fastened with self-tapping screws. In order to hide the fasteners, the fastening must be done on the reverse side.

    Fig.6. PHOTO benches from behind

    If the length of the self-tapping screws is not enough, then you can pre-drill a hole with a diameter larger than the head of the self-tapping screw.

    Fig.7. Backrest attachment

    The final step in assembling the bench is to install the lower cross member, which fastens the legs together.

    After the bench is assembled, it can be varnished to protect it from moisture by applying yacht varnish. Or treat it with impregnation from decay like a children's sandbox. Of course, varnishing looks much better, but it has one significant drawback, the bench becomes cold to the touch.

    Also, if you just varnish the bench, it will be rough. To make the bench smooth, you must first cover it with one layer of varnish, wait until it dries. Then with sandpaper, process the rough places that have appeared, and then cover with two more layers of varnish. Then the bench will be smooth. In the photo, the bench is in its fourth year.
