Do-it-yourself whatnot (for flowers, shoes and others): designs, applications, manufacturing. Do-it-yourself wooden bookcase Wooden bookcase made of balusters and boards

In small apartments, I want to use the place most functionally, some layouts imply the presence of ledges and niches. You can fill the resulting space with the help of shelving. The design of the shelf frame itself is not so complicated, so it is easy to find instructions in response to a request for how to make a rack with your own hands.

All you need to assemble the structure is materials, tools and some free time. Do-it-yourself photos of shelving will help you decide on the dimensions and options for the rack, and this will not necessarily be a banal set of boards.

Where to start

Of course, the size of the shelving depends on the space available, but if you are not limited by the available walls, it is better to build a structure of a certain size. The boards used should be no thinner than 20 millimeters, the width of the shelf depends on what will be stored on it.

For books or flower pots, a width of 30 centimeters is enough, while the length of the shelf should not exceed one meter. In the case of a longer length, the shelf will simply bend from the load, such a product will not have durability.

If the rack is needed to store tools, tires or something else, the width of the shelf should increase. In addition to the shelf width, the need to determine the purpose of the structure is necessary to calculate the load on the fasteners.

Lightweight structures are fixed using ordinary self-tapping screws, but heavier structures already require the use of anchors and hooks.

Location of the rack

The most common location is near the wall, or under the stairs. Usually these places are used for the functional placement of structures. The rack can be up to the ceiling, in which case access to the shelves is provided by retractable steps, in the form of lower shelves.

Nobody canceled the third-party help of a stool, if you are making a suspended or ceiling rack structure, be guided by the available ladders, otherwise you will not be able to fully use your creation.

The corner location of the rack is no less convenient option, such a location makes the space that usually remains empty work.

Shelving made of metal profile

To collect such an option, it is better to use welding, otherwise you will have to resort to using an electric drill. Needed to collect

  • electric drill
  • chipboard boards or boards with a thickness of at least thirty millimeters
  • profile pipes with a section of twenty-five millimeters
  • corners 40 mm

Using a drill and pipes, it is necessary to make frames, they need to be aligned using a level. If the thickness of the shelves is sufficient, there is no need to additionally strengthen the base, but when the load is very large, it is still worth reinforcing the base of the shelves with an additional stiffness angle, just set the profile fragment in the angular direction.

Wooden rack

The material used is chipboard, boards or slats. If the material is not further processed, a grinder, roller and brush will come in handy. Carry out the necessary measurements at three levels - bottom, top and middle, the walls in the houses are not always even, so you can avoid mismatches.

After taking measurements, make a drawing, drawings of shelving do not require special skills, just with their presence you will not be mistaken with the dimensions. Prepare the parts according to the required dimensions - base, side walls, shelves.

For the base, you should choose a thick board, and then go to the side walls. So that the cost of the final structure does not exceed the family budget, the side walls can be made of plywood.

Mark the chipboard sheets according to the width of the base, the length in accordance with the height of the rack. On the inside, mark the future shelves in increments of one meter, and the corners will be strengthened by the bars.

Now it’s worth taking up the shelves, if dimensional things are stored, a full-fledged wooden shelf can be replaced with slats, the weight of the storage object in this case should not be very large. It is possible to increase the mass of the possible load due to the same plywood sheets that are laid on top of the rails.

If a full-fledged board is used for the shelf, its thickness should be two and a half centimeters, the load on such a shelf does not have great restrictions.

The back wall is not required for installation, it is more of a decorative function. If the appearance of the wall is satisfactory, the installation of the rear wall can be omitted. If there is still a need for installation, you can make a wall from a sheet of plywood.

All the details of the future rack are ready and you can proceed to the assembly. Install the base to which you attach the side rails. If there is no rear wall and the rack is attached to the wall, you can immediately mount it to the wall.

When the frame is assembled, start installing the shelves. There are two options, either the shelves are fastened with screws to the side walls, or mounted on holders. As holders, you can use wooden bars cut along the width of the side wall.

Instructions on how to make a rack is very simple and accessible, as well as the material from which it can be made.

DIY shelving photo

A kitchen set with upper and lower cabinets copes well with the function of storing dishes, food, electrical appliances and household utensils. However, it happens that there is not enough space or you need open access to some little things. In this case, a roomy whatnot for the kitchen helps out. If it is also aesthetically designed, it can become a decorative decoration of the room. Consider what models of whatnots are, how to choose them and place them in the kitchen.

Fact: ultra-modern kitchens are most often furnished with closed wall cabinets and floor cabinets. Designers have invented a lot of ways to rationally use space. Every centimeter of the room can be made extremely functional. This leaves enough air and light, especially if the owners of the premises refuse to use the top row of cabinets.

Shelves made in various styles

Corner plastic models

Aesthetic and practical solution for Provence style

It would seem that obsolete bookcases have no place in modern kitchens, at most in vintage-style interiors. But no! Light open furniture is back in fashion. Manufacturers produce many models that successfully fit into both country style and minimalist design. The whatnot is not only appropriate in a modern interior, it can become the main style-forming element.

Beautiful modern model

This uncomplicated piece of furniture has extensive design potential. In addition, it is difficult to come up with a more convenient storage system for things that should always be at hand. It makes sense to take the time to search, choose the right model and beautifully fit it into the interior. As a result, you can get an aesthetic, unusually designed and functional kitchen.

Convenient multifunctional model

Erase boundaries and unite space

The design of the kitchen cabinet is extremely simple. It consists of open shelves connected by racks. Access to items stored on the shelves is possible from any side. Most often, models are designed in such a way that it is impossible to determine the “front” part in them, so you can install them as you like.

Due to the design features, the furniture is universal. It can be used to combine and zone space, depending on how you install it. The absence of facades is a huge plus, because. you can lighten and “clutter up” the kitchen without sacrificing functionality.

By choosing a light model in light colors, you can achieve the effect of expanding the room. This makes the bookcase an indispensable piece of furniture in narrow cramped kitchens. A good option for decorating a small room is a set without the top row of cabinets. So the room will seem wider and more spacious.

Instead of the usual pencil case, which compensates for the lack of wall cabinets, it is better to install a compact and roomy whatnot. This gives a lot of benefits. Due to the absence of blank facades, the room will look more spacious, and you can put beautiful dishes, flowers, decor items on the shelves.

Sturdy and beautiful model

Advantages and disadvantages of whatnots in the interior

The advantages of using whatnots in the interior are obvious: these are convenient storage systems that take up a minimum of space. The design can be entered into the already finished design of the kitchen, and it will look very organic. It can also be easily removed if desired.

A good solution is a bookcase combined with an open hanging shelf in the same style. Two similar pieces of furniture will look like a set, and a separate accent zone will appear in the kitchen. Shelves can be combined with other furniture. The main thing is to match the style and color scheme.

Open model for the kitchen

The design has only one drawback, but a significant one. Due to the lack of facades, they are heavily polluted. In the kitchen with a gas stove, soot is constantly formed. Settling on the shelves, particles of fat and soot create a sticky yellowish-gray coating. To cope with it, you have to use household chemicals.

In the same way, objects stored on shelves are also covered with plaque. This is inconvenient. You can solve the problem with a good hood, which leads to additional costs. You will either have to put up with them, or regularly wash the shelves, risking ruining the coating.

Lightweight kitchen shelf on wheels

What shape to choose for a modern kitchen

There are many types of kitchen shelves. They differ in shape, size, method of placement, material of manufacture, decorative design. You should choose, focusing on the area, the style of the interior of the kitchen, the features of the operation of furniture.

For example, for a cramped room with a single-row linear set, a rectangular model is suitable. If there is a free corner in the room, then a compact corner bookcase will fit perfectly into it.

The form of the model can be any:

  • rectangular;
  • square;
  • oval;
  • round.

Classic version with forging

For an interior dominated by smooth lines and curves, oval and round models are best suited. In a minimalist design with clear straight lines, square and rectangular ones will look good.

Designer advice. An excellent move is the combination of a headset with rectangular cabinets and an unusual asymmetric bookcase. It will revive the monotonous interior.

Popular materials for the manufacture of whatnots

The material for the manufacture of whatnots can serve:

  • wood;
  • Chipboard or MDF;
  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • glass.

All designs have their advantages, but when choosing, it is worth considering not only the pros, but also the cons. You should also pay attention to the material from which the kitchen set is made. For example, cheap plastic loses a lot against the background of furniture with facades made of natural wood. But the metal shelf is suitable for a kitchen in any style.

Below we consider the features of models from various materials.

Plastic model on wheels

Option 1: natural wood

Wood looks presentable, so even simple furniture looks solid. The interior with wooden elements creates an atmosphere of special comfort. Furniture made of natural material does not cause allergies, does not emit toxic substances into the atmosphere. It is durable and retains its original appearance for many years. In the event of a breakdown, wooden products can be repaired, or even radically change their appearance, simply by painting or adding decor.

Wooden shelf for flowers in a vintage interior

Natural wood lends itself perfectly to processing with conventional tools, so it is easy to make a bookcase from it with your own hands, decorate it with carvings. Forms - any. Wooden furniture never goes out of style. It is appropriate in a classic style, provence, eco, looks good in ultramodern interiors. This is a great option for people who value strength, versatility, durability.

With all its advantages, wood is not without its drawbacks. All wooden furniture items are heavy, difficult to carry and move. Another disadvantage is the high cost, so wood is often combined with other materials. This allows you to maximize their advantages and compensate for their shortcomings.

Note! Natural wood is afraid of moisture, so it is better to install a bookcase away from the sink and stove. You can clean it with a damp sponge with non-aggressive household chemicals.

Option 2: Chipboard and MDF

When deciding what and how to make a bookcase with their own hands, many craftsmen opt for composite materials. Chipboard or MDF is a worthy alternative to natural wood. It is a durable moisture resistant material. If you buy laminated chipboard, you can make furniture not only for the kitchen, but also for the bathroom. Often chipboard and MDF are combined, which expands the design possibilities.

Chipboard can hardly be called an environmentally friendly material, because. it is made using formaldehyde resins. However, varieties of plates have long appeared that fully comply with European quality and environmental safety standards. They cost a little more, but these costs pay off.

Model "Helga" made of beech and MDF

The main disadvantage of MDF is the high price. Furniture made from such panels is cheaper than wood, but more expensive than chipboard products. MDF boards are made from sawdust, glued together under high temperature and pressure. The adhesive is lignin. It is safe, therefore, from the point of view of environmental friendliness, MDF is preferable. An additional plus is the wide design potential.

Advice. MDF is a stylistically versatile material. By choosing the color, texture and shape of the bookcase, you can create an original interior in any style - from strict classics to hi-tech.

Homemade kitchen shelf

Option 3: metal

Until recently, metal was used to a limited extent in the manufacture of furniture. As a rule, it was combined with wood, glass or composite boards. Now interior fashion trends have changed somewhat. Metal shelves for the kitchen fit perfectly into the modern style of interior design. Graceful models are appropriate in classic, minimalist, high-tech interiors.

The metal is strong, reliable, durable, environmentally friendly, versatile. Modern methods of material processing allow you to create real works of art. New coatings protect well against corrosion, so metal shelves are suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and terraces. Some models can be repeatedly disassembled and reassembled without compromising the strength of the connections.

Metal furniture is very heavy. To move or move even a small bookcase, 2 people will be required, because. it will have to be lifted off the floor, otherwise the legs may scratch the coating. A good choice is a mesh shelf on wheels for the kitchen. You can just gently roll it over.

Note! Large metal objects are undesirable for use in a house where there are children. There is a risk of bumping and injury. If metal is chosen as the material, then it is worth stopping at a model with smooth lines, without sharp corners.

Forged model with white finish

Option 4: plastic

A plastic whatnot on wheels for the kitchen is a win-win option if you need a place to store household items, detergents and light dishes. Manufacturers make collapsible models. They are easy to transport, carry, move. Colors, shape, decor - any, and the price is more than acceptable.

It is believed that plastic is an unsafe material, because. releases toxic substances into the atmosphere. This is only partly true. With strong heating, burning, the material really emits toxic gases, so it is better not to place furniture next to the hob. If the plastic does not overheat, it is quite safe.

Plastic shelf-mesh "Eliza"

The advantages of plastic furniture include ease of care and low cost. The disadvantages - a specific appearance. No matter how high-quality the material is, it always looks cheap and is not suitable for creating a presentable interior. The plastic whatnot should be placed so that it does not attract much attention to itself.

Option 5: glass

Glass furniture is extremely beautiful. Made of metal and glass, the bookcase will perfectly fit into the interior of a modern kitchen. By installing it correctly, you can achieve the effect of expanding space. Glass reflects light, so the room seems to be filled with air.

Stained glass model

For the manufacture of furniture, transparent and matte material of various colors is used. Orange, yellow, pink create an uplifting mood, while shades of blue and green soothe. In recent years, products made of crash glass have come into fashion - a “broken” material with a cracked effect.

Glass has its drawbacks. The hardened material is able to withstand severe loads, but still may not be able to endure a strong blow. Touching glass surfaces can be unpleasant, because. they are cold to the touch. When arranging dishes on the shelves, the glass makes a loud sound.

Advice. Graceful material looks good in any style - country, Provence, classic, high-tech. Choosing the right shape and color, you can decorate the kitchen beautifully and unusually.

How to make a wooden bookcase with your own hands

The easiest way is to make a bookcase with your own hands from natural wood. To work, you will need the material itself, bars and such tools:

  • drill;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver.

For surface treatment, you will need a grinding machine, varnish or paint, and a brush. If there is no grinder, you can buy regular sandpaper.

Attention! For the manufacture of furniture, only well-dried wood is used. If it is wet, the product may be deformed.

Wood sanding machine

Step-by-step instructions for making a product

  1. All blanks for the future whatnot are processed with a grinder. The surface of the wood must be perfectly smooth. If sandpaper is used, then the wood should be sanded with a grit of 80-120.
  2. First of all, make a frame. It is assembled from wooden blocks of the same size. The legs of the bookcase are fastened with horizontal bars. You should get two large parts.

It is important to follow the cutting line. If the angle is wrong, then it will not be possible to assemble the parts into a single whole.

  1. The parts of the bookcase are connected by screwing the shelves with self-tapping screws, a drill and a screwdriver.
  2. After assembly, the structure is painted or varnished. When the composition dries, the bookcase is ready for use.

Master class: how to make a carved whatnot yourself

Whatnot - universal furniture for the kitchen. It can be adapted to store any items. On the shelves you can put dishes, cutting boards. Pull-out basket designs are great for vegetables, breads, spices, cereals and other foods that don't require refrigeration. The bookcase itself can be decorated with carvings and ornaments. The possibilities are endless. The main thing is to see them and use them.

A bookcase made by hand is not only practical, cheap, but the very process of creating it will bring you a lot of pleasure. As you know, a bookcase is considered a cabinet without walls. It also includes shelves in height from the floor, which are on wheels, or racks that can withstand a small operational load, not attached to the floor, or to the walls and ceiling.

What to make a bookcase with your own hands?

A bookcase can be made from a variety of more or less durable and workable materials, but new furniture makers do not need to get carried away with their number.

Try to make a simple bookcase with us, a diagram and a master class are below in the article.

To make such a product, it is necessary to prepare the necessary material. Special skills and higher carpentry qualifications are not required to work on the locker. The most important thing is the desire, some free time and small skills acquired at school in labor lessons.

So, for the process of creating a bookcase, you will need to use the following materials:

  • Hacksaw or electric jigsaw,
  • with a hammer,
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Drill,
  • Screwdriver and screws
  • Emery cloth of different numbers.

First, you should decide for what purposes and for which room the whatnot will be made: kitchen, hallway, bathroom or just for decoration. For the first cases, it is best to take into account the moment of hygienic protection, otherwise spilled liquid, dirt from shoes or wet linen will soon damage an unprotected tree.

Therefore, in this case, you can use slats, boards or sheets of plywood; varnish or waterproof paint to protect against moisture; a bar or a blank of a round or square shape for legs.

It is worth paying attention to the fact that if round legs were conceived, and there is no lathe, you can contact the economic department. Affordable material is a number of rolling pins of equal size or spade handles.

Do-it-yourself bookcase assembly

To achieve stability, experts advise using four solid legs.

Shelf made of prefabricated racks

However, if there is confidence in personal skills, then you can safely proceed to the construction of a stable structure from prefabricated racks.

  • To begin with, it is worth deciding on the height and number of shelves, as well as the dimensions.
  • Then make 3-4 shelves of equal size and mark each one in four corners, so that later the supports can be fixed.
  • With special care and accuracy, measure and cut off the legs. Because with the formation of mismatches even in a millimeter or with an uneven cut angle, the whatnot will be unstable.
  • In the case when each of the legs is monolithic from bottom to top, it is necessary to fix planks for installing shelves on self-tapping screws.
  • If there is a prefabricated structure, then it is necessary to start from the bottom and fix all the quartets step by step, one above the other.
  • Upon completion, it is necessary to sand the product and cover all the elements with varnish or paint of any color. For example, a white wooden bookcase will perfectly harmonize with any interior.
  • Now you need to dry the bookcase in the fresh air.

The resurgent demand for bookcases is great news for those who love retro style. Today it is popular to buy not only semi-antique finished wood products, but also to restore or make them yourself.

improvised means

A shoe rack made from improvised materials can also have a beautiful and comfortable look, even despite the fact that a minimum of funds was spent on its manufacture. Improvised means include: cardboard, plywood, pipes, profile.

To make a rack for shoes, you can use an old dresser or bedside table. In this case, it will be sufficient to show a little imagination and effort.

You can make a strong and comfortable shoe cabinet from a profile and tempered glass. To do this, you will need to use an electric drill with metal drills, a grinder, a building level, a glass cutter, a jigsaw, a screwdriver.

To make a bookcase, you can use a galvanized profile or a simple multi-colored one. A cabinet made with a galvanized profile will be more moisture resistant. And if you use simple material, then such a bookcase will best harmonize with the overall design of the room. Of course, in any of the cases described, the locker must be attached to the wall.

Product assembly sequence:

  • At the very beginning, it is worth taking measurements from the future place where the finished structure will be located, and then it is necessary to transfer the information received to paper. The best option would be to make a full-fledged drawing.
  • Decide on the height of the cabinet so that it is suitable for the hallway, and from this data calculate the number of shelves.
  • Then you should choose based on the dimensions, profile and glass for the shelves.
  • Next, taking the profile, you need to attach it to the wall and fix it with one self-tapping screw.
  • Be sure to check the horizontal layout using the building level.
  • In this way, make the entire frame.
  • Then, on the created frame, place shelves made of pre-prepared tempered glass.

In this way, you can give your home some originality, while spending a minimum of money, but with a little effort, imagination and desire.

Provence-style whatnot with step-by-step execution:

Flower shelf:

A bookcase is a place for storage with open shelves, but it is much weightless visually, which does not overload the interior. This option is suitable for anyone who gravitates towards minimalism, open spaces, and is also limited in budget. We offer you a master class in which a step-by-step description of how to create a bookcase with your own hands will be given.

Simple and fast

The easiest and fastest option to perform is a whatnot in the form of a ladder. The photo below shows an example.

You will need:

  • boards or thick plywood;
  • wood screws;
  • drill;
  • saw;
  • pencil;
  • ruler;
  • special glue for wood products;
  • sandpaper;
  • paint or azure on wood. Just make sure they are for indoor use.

First, decide what width and height your product will be, how many shelves you want to place. Mark with a pencil and a ruler the required dimensions and cut the necessary details.

Now on the racks it is necessary to mark the places for attaching the shelves. Since our ladder shelf will be attached to the wall, it is necessary to take into account the slope of the shelves. Also, at an angle, it will be necessary to cut the side of the racks that will stand directly on the floor. So we will give greater stability to the structure.

It is better to mark the places for screwing screws with a drill. Then coat the surfaces with glue and assemble the bookcase. Now you can start coloring.

A couple of painting tips:

  1. If you want the same product as in the photo, then choose a paint with a more opaque ability. For example, universal enamel. Some craftsmen impregnate the wood with a special oil to create the effect of unpainted wood. You can also tint the material, which will even help to “change” the type of wood;
  2. If your bookcase will be used in a dry room, then there is no need to prime.

Such a shelf is suitable for books and magazines, framed photos, flowers, etc.

We equip the kitchen

It happens that in the kitchen between pieces of furniture there is a narrow space that spoils the view and seems to be unsuitable for operation. We offer you a master class on how to make a roll-out whatnot.

It is necessary to prepare:

  • boards, according to the number of shelves that you plan to make;
  • slats;
  • furniture wheels;
  • handle for easy rolling out;
  • wooden plate;
  • screws and dowels;
  • glue.

We measure the space that we want to fill with a shelf, and accordingly determine the width of the whatnot. We cut the necessary parts.

We begin to attach the shelves to a wooden plate, which will serve as the back wall of the product. Before assembling, we coat the joints of the parts with glue, and only then we connect them with screws.

We screwed the shelves, now we fix the sides.

Can be pressed with a load for better adhesive adhesion.

The base is ready.

Now we glue the slats that will not allow the contents of the shelf to fall from it.

Attach wheels and handle. We install the shelf in the opening.

Roll-out bookcase is ready. And the empty space is filled, and additional storage places have appeared.

PVC pipe product

Prepare:

  • PVC polymeric water pipes;
  • sandpaper 220 rubles;
  • centimeter tape or tape measure;
  • plastic or a special primer for PVC;
  • glue;
  • PVC tees and caps;
  • for shelves, boards, chipboard or plywood, depending on what is at your disposal;
  • jigsaw;
  • drill and drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • screws;
  • spray paint (choose a color of your choice).

You need to choose the details for the size of the whatnot that you are planning. We have this:

  • legs 15 cm long - 4 pieces;
  • horizontal supports 52 cm each - 9 pieces;
  • side supports of 15.5 cm - 14 pieces;
  • vertical supports of 26 cm - 20 pieces;
  • tops of 10 cm - 4 pieces.

We glue the parts, using tees if necessary.

We put caps on the legs.

Now, at the corners of the wooden shelves, we drill holes for the diameter of the pipes.

We process the places of cuts with sandpaper.

The fastening of the squares, in addition to glue, is duplicated with screws for reliability.

Until the shelves are installed, paint the frame of the whatnot with paint. Be sure to lay a substrate so as not to stain everything around. And of course, we do not forget about safety precautions: we work with gloves, in the fresh air, preferably even with a respirator (if you have a sensitive scent or a tendency to allergic reactions).

We collect the entire structure.

We install in the desired place and place things.

Other options

From improvised materials, for example, belts and boards that remained after the repair, you can make a hanging whatnot.

And even from bottles.

You can take an old bookcase and paint it using the patination method. And you get a unique item made of antique wood.

If your interior is in Provence style, then you can decorate your bookcase using decoupage technique.

Here is such a unique and useful piece of furniture you can make with your own hands with a minimum of skills. Below is a selection of videos on creating whatnots.

Video on the topic of the article

Your attention is presented step-by-step instructions for creating a bookcase with your own hands. For an example of the manufacture of this whatnot, a used picket fence will be used, however, any lumber will do. Shelves are made independently and attached to vertical slats.

Instruments

To create a bookcase with your own hands, you will need the following tools:

  • A hammer
  • Combined square
  • Roulette
  • Pencil
  • Hacksaw or circular saw
  • Anti-dust mask
  • Protective glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Miter saw or hacksaw with back and miter box
  • Tsulaga
  • grinder
  • Universal planer
  • Electric drill
  • Drill bit 6.5 mm
  • Wire wheel brush for electric drill
  • Four C-clamps
  • socket wrench 11 mm

Necessary materials

Additionally:

  • Sandpaper: ten sheets of each grit 25 and 12 according to GOST (60 and 120 according to ISO);
  • PVA glue;
  • finishing nails 60 mm;
  • nails 30 mm with a flat head;
  • four synthetic sponges for polishing;
  • clean rags;
  • teak wax oil or finishing material of your choice;
  • eighty-four 3x50 mm mushroom head bolts with washers.

* The old fence is well dried and should not warp. However, you will have to adjust the width and depth of your bookcase to match your picket fence. If desired, 95 mm wide hardwood boards can be used.

The final height of the structure is 1500 mm; width 795 mm; depth of shelves 378 mm. Timber is indicated with nominal dimensions.

Material preparation

1. Remove nails from shtaketin, if any. Carefully select the best planks, that is, the most even, with the same thickness. In total, you will need approximately thirty-five shtaketins.

2. Take the material for the frames, mark it out and cut the pieces. Make markings along the square across the plate and on the edges to ensure that the ends are square when sawing. Saw close to the pencil line on the back side. Attach the combination square to the material as a guide stop for the saw blade. If you are not very good with a circular saw, use a miter saw or a backsaw and a cleat.

3.
Shtaketins usually rot from below, and from above they are in pretty good condition. Fold a stack of two or three planks and evenly saw off the perpendicular ends. When you saw off the ends of all shtaketins from one end, mark them and cut them to a length of 1500 mm. Trim the corners of the top ends as shown in the illustration on the side. Do not try to make the cuts exactly the same - small irregularities will emphasize the rural style of the product.

4 . Cut the shelf planks as described in point 2.

5. Sandpaper grit 25 according to GOST (60 according to ISO) sand all the details. Sew the top edges only on the material of the frames to make them even. For frame parts, cut a small, 2 mm, chamfer.

Frame assembly

6. Clamp the frame jumper in a vise with one of the ends up. Apply some PVA glue to the butt and rub it into the wood with your finger. Then apply glue to the end of the part. This will strengthen the connection. Take a crossbar and drive a 60mm nail into the material near the end of the piece. Lay the crossbar over the lintel so that their ends are flush and the cut edges are neatly aligned. Drive in a nail and adjust the fit. Drive a second nail into the joint and repeat the process from the other end. Check the squareness of the frame by measuring the diagonals. If they are equal, then the corners of the frame are right.

7. Add middle jumpers to the frame. They should be evenly spaced, but position accuracy doesn't matter much as long as the surfaces are flush with the top of the frame.

8. Make two more shelf frames and a plinth frame where the lintels are shorter.

Shelf assembly

9. While the frame glue dries, clean and sand the picket fence strips. Wear safety goggles and gloves and, if possible, use a wheeled wire brush in a power drill to clean all surfaces of each picket fence, paying special attention to areas where there is rot. You can also use a regular wire brush, but the process will be more time consuming and time consuming. When all the planks are wire brushed, sand them with 25 grit sandpaper according to GOST (60 according to ISO). Be sure to carefully sand the edges to remove chips and nicks; work along the fibers, not across. To obtain a smooth surface, also process the parts with sandpaper with a grain size of 12 according to GOST (120 according to ISO). Remove wood dust with a soft cloth.

10 . Check if the glue is dry. Glue the plinth board to the basement frame (it is narrower) with PVA glue and nail the baffle board with flat-head nails, aligning its upper edge with the top of the frame.

11. Liberally apply glue to the place on the plinth frame where the front picket fence will be located, and place the bar on the frame so that it protrudes no more than 10 mm from the front of the plinth. Check that it is flush with or slightly protruding from the side of the frame and nail it down with flathead nails. Apply a little more glue to the frame, lay the next plank and nail it, aligning the ends. Repeat the process for the third plank. Leave the fourth plank for now: it will be too wide and will need to be trimmed.

12. Attach three strips to each shelf frame in the same way, positioning them flush with the front of the frames.

13 . Put four planks in place, mark their required width along the frames. Fix them to a suitable work surface and cut to width. Nail the last planks in place.

Finding racks in frame houses
To attach a shelf to a wood stud wall, you'll need to find the studs. This can be done in several ways.

  • Use the structural element finder (post and beam indicator). This battery-powered instrument is available from retailers.
  • Lightly tap the wall and identify places with dull sounds.
  • At the level of the shelves, try to find the racks with a nail.
  • Look for nail marks on the drywall as they may indicate studs.
  • In the under-roof space, find the ends of the racks. Measure the intervals between them and the distance to the corner.

Preparing the side and rear trims

14. On one of the side rails, measure 60 mm from the bottom. Set aside another 400 mm from this mark to determine the position of other shelves. Draw a center line along the plank to get the drilling points. Use an electric drill with a 6.5 mm drill to make holes in them.

15 . Use the first plank as a template for drilling the rest of the pickets. Stack two or three strips with the template on top. Fix with a clamp and drill everything together in the appropriate places.

16. Apply finishing material to all planks and frames (access to these places will be difficult later). We used teak oil with wax to give it a rough and simple look as it brings out the texture. Work the wax in properly by swirling the polishing sponge. This will also remove small splinters left after sanding, so wear protective gloves. Remove excess wax with a dry, clean cloth. The bolt heads were painted matt black. The bolts were stuck into corrugated cardboard so that only the heads were visible, which were painted from an aerosol can.

Alternative finishing materials for whatnots

  • Natural wax. Very popular, but requires increased rubbing and high consumption.
  • Teak oil. For good results, do several layers.
  • Matt lacquer. Do a couple of layers of aerosol.

Bookcase assembly

17. Make room for assembly. You may need an extra pair of hands at this stage. Put the base shelf on its end. Lay the first side strip so that it is flush with the bottom edge of the plinth and the front edge of the shelf strip. Clamp it with a clamp. Clamp the rest of the shelves in their respective position flush with the edge of the plank, ensuring that the bolts go through the middle of the shelf frames and that there is room for a socket wrench. The bolt holes in the plinth will need to be angled a little to keep them out of the frame, but this will not affect the final look of the product. Insert the bolts Zx50 mm into the holes, put on the washers and tighten until hand-tight.
