How to hang screens on a radiator. Installing a screen for a heating battery with your own hands. Advantages and disadvantages of individual options

To hide the fins of the radiators, a screen is installed on them. This design makes the room complete, but becomes to some extent a barrier to warm air. There are several ways to install a protective screen, using which you can make any room more beautiful and comfortable.

Screen installation rules

  • there should be as many holes as possible in the protective screen on the battery so that warm air can freely escape;
  • reflective material (foil or isolon) is attached to the wall on the back of the battery.

Ideally, you need to install the screen on the battery with your own hands so that it can be easily removed. This will allow you to wipe the dust, and in case of problems with heating, quickly solve them. The screen should be located at some distance from the radiator (2-3 cm) so that air circulates freely. Materials are used only withstanding prolonged heating. They should not melt, spread an unpleasant odor, harmful fumes.

Material selection

The screen on the battery is made of plastic, metal and wood materials. You can also find exclusive glass gratings on sale, but it’s unlikely that you can build one with your own hands. The most affordable in the case of self-manufacturing is plywood or chipboard. They also use laminated chipboard (LDSP), MDF. It is useful to analyze each material separately.

It is undesirable to use plastic as a screen in a room where people are constantly present. When heated, it releases toxic fumes. Over time, it can warp if it is incorrectly selected, or change color, become covered with spots, stains.

Metal is the strongest and most durable material. Lattices are made of thin sheet steel and painted with paint for metal. It is better to do this with a spray gun so that the paint lies evenly, without streaks. This manufacturing method is suitable for those who know how to work with welding, bending, cutting, drilling metal.

Solid wood is rarely used. But still, skilled craftsmen can make planks out of it, connecting them into an elegant screen. Wooden planks should be located at some distance from each other, you can overlap them, but only at an angle so that there are gaps. Do not forget that wood isolates heat well and can interfere with heat transfer from the surface of radiators.

MDF is easy to process and environmentally friendly. From it it is not difficult to make a screen on the battery with your own hands. The same can be said for plywood.

Often, a screen is assembled from inexpensive chipboard panels of class E1 (the safest). In this case, the edge of the parts is trimmed with adhesive edging tape, heated with an iron.

The filling of the frame can be wicker rattan, perforated wood board, various types of mesh. Screens are assembled from thin slats and figured or straight balusters.

Device and mount

To understand how the screen is attached to the battery, you need to remember the following. Heating radiators are made recessed into the wall or protruding. In the second option, in modern apartments and houses, plasterboard crates are used, leveling the walls and hiding everything superfluous, including batteries. But if the area of \u200b\u200bthe room is already small, it is not advisable to hide it with a frame structure.

Thus, depending on the location of the batteries relative to the walls, there are several options for the device and screen mounting:

  • flat grill if the battery is in a niche;
  • installation of the frame on the floor on legs;
  • hanging on corners or hooks (removable hinged option);
  • holding with pipes and additional fastening.

The front panel is easiest to do on latches. Then, with one movement of the hand, it can be put on and taken off. Another option is self-tapping screws.

Necessary accessories for work

To make a screen from chipboard, you will need a hacksaw or a jigsaw, a pencil and a tape measure, a metal corner and a screw, a drill, a screwdriver. Corners are used the same as for shelves or wall cabinets. They can be purchased at any furniture or hardware store. Anchor bolts are also used for hanging the frame or dowels with hooks. It is very convenient to hang the screen frame on hooks.

There are several options for making the front panel. The easiest of them is to buy a finished decorative perforated panel. Lattices come in standard sizes and to order. Patterns also differ, so there is always an opportunity to purchase the most acceptable item. In case of color mismatch, it is easy to paint.

Note! If you have the skills to work with a jigsaw, then you can cut the decorative panel yourself from a plywood sheet.

You can assemble the frame and fix the side, front and top walls on it (there is no need for the bottom). Or twist all the elements directly to each other without a frame structure.

Sequence of work

The first step is to take measurements. Using a tape measure or centimeter, they measure the battery, make a drawing on a piece of paper with notes - the length, width and depth of the screen. Depth is the distance from the wall to the location of the front panel. The design should not stand close to the battery, so leave small indents of 1-2 cm.

In accordance with the measurements, the elements of the box or screen frame are cut out. Holes for the exit of heated air can be made in the upper part and even in the sidewalls, which will improve heat transfer.

Note! You can connect the parts with self-tapping screws, corners or glue - as you like.

Then you need to attach the screen to the wall and outline where the holes for the dowels with hooks for hanging (or corners with screws) will be drilled. On the sidewalls of the frame, the locations of the pipes are also marked in order to cut out the excess.

After installing the hanging elements, hang the screen and attach the front panel. Sometimes slats are glued or nailed around the perimeter with decorative nails. This creates a nice frame.

And further! We must not forget to stick the reflective foil on the wall behind the battery. Its size is selected so that the ends do not peek out from behind the screen.

If you don’t like the color of the material from which the screen is made, then you can paste over it with self-adhesive wallpaper or paint it.

How to make a braided screen

An interesting option is to weave a screen with your own hands from a furniture edge. Such an edge is a dense tape. It is used for finishing the ends of furniture, protection against wetting, delamination. To determine the length of the material, it is necessary to divide the area to be woven by the width of the tape and multiply the result by 1.3. These are approximate calculations, but given that the edge is inexpensive, you can take it with a margin.

The screen body will be made of laminated chipboard sidewalls, fastened with corners. The edges must be pasted over with the same tape from which the lattice is woven.

Attach the woven screen to the sidewalls with a stapler or decorative nails 8 mm. Small nails are easy to hold with surgical tweezers. At first, they are not completely clogged in order to pull them out with pliers if necessary and trim the position.

The tape is woven either in rhombuses (squares) of the same width or in a fan pattern. Weaving options can be invented independently, if there is a fantasy. But even the simplest criss-cross weave looks very good.

Note! To make the woven screen tough, it is heated with an iron at 150℃ from the front side.

This softens the glue, and the tapes are firmly connected to each other. The rest of the tape is cut off with a sharp knife, the protruding corners are sanded with sandpaper.

The screen is easy to hang on metal corners, which have holes for screws. These screws are threaded through pre-drilled holes in the frame and tightened. Instead of holes, a sample is also made. The screw gets into it even easier than into the hole, clamping, securely fixes the screen. A drill is required to drill the wall and fix the corner.

Since there is always a thin pipe on one side of the battery, the frame can be easily fixed on it. To do this, you need to make a sample of chipboard according to the size of the pipe or a little more. The exact position of the sample will be shown by measurements and location relative to the wall. The same mount can be arranged below. The result is a beautiful screen that will be difficult to distinguish from the purchased one. And for the price it will cost three times cheaper.

Installation of decorative screens

Self-installation of decorative and protective screens by people who do not have sufficient knowledge and installation skills can damage the wall finish, screen structure and reduce the heat transfer of batteries. In addition, unprofessional installation can bring disharmony to the interior.

Masters of the Husband company for an hour quickly and efficiently install decorative screens of various types of construction, namely:

  • hinged;
  • flat;
  • with doors;
  • with backlight etc.
Installation of hinged or flat screens is carried out on batteries that are located in a niche. If the radiator protrudes from under the windowsill, then it is covered with a screen-box or a hinged model with a lid.
When installing the screens, the masters follow the necessary installation rules, which ensures proper heat transfer and guarantees the reliability of installation.

In this case, there is always a gap between the battery and the floor, and the upper part of the radiator does not close.
As for the choice of installation method, then the masters must take into account the type of wall and its thickness, as well as the location of the battery and the design of the screen itself.

The professionalism and rich experience of the masters allows them to quickly and efficiently install screens from different materials. They carefully and without delay install screens on radiators made of metal, wood, plastic, etc.

Frequent staining and constant exposure to high temperatures worsen the appearance of heating radiators, and therefore, they need to be replaced periodically. If, when making repairs in an apartment, you do not plan to replace heating radiators, the problem arises of disguising them with the help of decorative screens that are firmly entrenched in the interior of residential premises. Used as finishing touches, battery screens, along with traditional decor elements, play an important role in creating a unified stylistic concept, as they not only focus on the merits or hide flaws, but also expand the functionality of interior details, for the design of which they are used. Despite the wide selection of decorative screens on the construction market, experienced craftsmen advise you to abandon the purchase of a finished structure and make a screen for a heating battery with your own hands, which will save a good amount of money and make it according to the size of the decorated heater and your individual taste preferences. To make this task easier, in this article we will look at how to make a do-it-yourself battery screen.

The principle of operation of heating radiators

At first glance, it may seem that a radiator covered with a box or a decorative grille will cope worse with its main functional task, which becomes the most common reason for refusing to upgrade unsightly heaters. Despite this, the experience of using decorative screens shows that the design, made in accordance with the basic laws of thermophysics, not only does not reduce, but also increases the heating efficiency. To make an efficiently functioning battery screen with your own hands, consider the basic principle of operation of heating radiators.

The transfer of thermal energy from the heater to the room is carried out in two ways:

  • Convection, which is based on the mixing of warm and cold air flows;
  • Electromagnetic radiation in the infrared spectrum, the power of which increases as the temperature of the radiator increases.

Cast iron radiators of the old model work exactly on this principle, heating the air due to convection processes. As the intensity of heating increases, the ratio of radiant and convection energy changes, as a result of which heat transfer begins to be carried out due to infrared radiation.

The operation of modern radiators is based on a similar principle, however, they differ in their ability to respond to environmental conditions and, adapting to them, redistribute energy in order to maximize its transfer. If some external conditions prevent maximum heat transfer, for example, a curtain that impedes air circulation, the heat is redistributed towards the front panels, as a result of which heat transfer begins to occur due to infrared radiation. Thanks to this property, the efficiency of functioning of modern radiators is significantly increased.

Important! In order for energy transfer by convection to be as efficient as possible, the screen's front panel, usually represented by a grille, must be designed in such a way that an air cushion is created between it and the heatsink. Otherwise, warm air, which has an obstacle in its path, will partially accumulate inside, which will lead to a violation of heat exchange and the transfer of heat to the adjacent room. However, for maximum heat transfer, you need to pay attention to a number of details.

Physical basis of functioning of heat-reflecting screens

In accordance with one of the basic rules of physics, a black body has the ability to absorb and emit electromagnetic waves as much as possible. This rule is also relevant for effective screens on the battery, since it must absorb infrared radiation from the radiator and, having good thermal conductivity, give off heat to the room. Thus, from the presented example, it can be seen that the inside of the screen must be painted black, while the outside can be decorated as you wish.

Consider the basic rules for designing a heat-reflecting screen, taking into account the basic laws of physics.

To achieve the maximum thermal effect, the surface behind the battery is covered with a heat-reflecting screen, which should not be black, but shiny, due to which the infrared radiation from the rear surface of the radiator will be reflected from the wall and, passing through the radiator again, heat up even more. Using this technique, you will significantly increase the level of heat transfer and, thereby, increase the efficiency of the heating radiator.

Despite this, the metal sheet does not ensure the maximum functioning of the system, as it reduces unnecessary heat transfer by only 5-6 times. The most effective solution to this problem will be the installation of a heat-insulating mat made of fibrous material, for example, a padding polyester, coated on both sides with aluminum. This design reduces the flow of infrared radiation to the wall by more than 40 times. Experts recommend choosing a synthetic winterizer, since a layer of material 5 mm thick prevents the conduction of heat and is a good reflector of infrared radiation.

For other fibrous materials, heat-reflective mats will require a 3 cm layer of material, which can make it difficult to place the mat behind the heatsink.

Advantages of screens for heating radiators

Before proceeding with the manufacture of a screen for a radiator, consider the main advantages of this design.

  • Using screens for heating radiators, the advantages of which will be discussed below, you get the opportunity to effectively disguise the batteries, creating a holistic interior concept and transforming your home;
  • Prevent contamination of radiators, which will facilitate their operation and maintenance;
  • Properly designed radiators will ensure an even distribution of air masses throughout the room;
  • By covering the radiators with a decorative screen, you will protect the household from burns and bruises in case of an inaccurate collision with heating devices and, thereby, ensure their safety;
  • A variety of materials, textures, shapes and colors allows you to choose the right decorative solution that will be the perfect complement to the main interior concept.

Types of screens for radiators: a brief description

There are several main classifications of decorative screens, the first of which implies their division into several groups in accordance with the design features and includes:

  • Screens in the form of a closed box are used in cases where it is necessary to completely close the radiator;
  • Flat screens are used to mask radiators located in niches;
  • Hinged radiator screens are a construction with a lid and are used to mask unaesthetic cast-iron radiators that protrude strongly from under the windowsill.

There is another valid classification of screens for radiators, which involves the division of models according to the material used. Given this classification, the following varieties are distinguished:

  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • Wooden;
  • Screens from MDF lattice;
  • Glass.

Let's consider in more detail the characteristics of each of them.

  • Metal screens outwardly, most often, they are a box, for the manufacture of which a thin sheet of metal was used. Despite the rather concise and somewhat primitive appearance, they fully cope with their functional task. The modern market offers more expensive screens made of stainless steel, which can be diversified by perforation. For the installation of metal screens, you do not need to have specialized skills, as they are simply hung on a radiator;
  • Plastic screens, in view of the diversity of the model range and democratic pricing policy, are the most affordable options for all segments of the population. However, experts do not recommend their use in residential areas, since when heated, plastic can release harmful substances;

  • Wooden models most often made to order from precious woods, taking into account a pre-drawn sketch. Due to its aesthetics and noble appearance, wooden screens will be the perfect complement to a variety of interior concepts, including classic, rustic and modern eco-styles. The main disadvantage of wooden screens is the tendency to dry out and warp due to changes in temperature and humidity. To protect and prolong the operation of wooden screens, only high-quality wood is used, which is the reason for the high cost of products. Radiators, complemented by woven decorative grilles, acquire an aesthetic appearance;

  • Screens from MDF lattices Outwardly, they practically do not differ from wooden models, but they are much cheaper. Due to the use of modern technologies in their production process, MDF screens are a practical and, at the same time, an affordable solution for many. MDF is a material that practically does not differ in quality from wood, which can be used for the production of screens of various shapes, colors and stylistic design;
  • Glass screens belong to exclusive models for the production of which tempered (stained glass) glass is used. Often such models become an unusual decoration of refined interiors. Glass screens are decorated with patterns that you can choose at your discretion, and need careful use and constant care.

What to look for when choosing a decorative screen design?

Earlier, we have already noted that the installation of any type of screen contributes to a decrease in heat transfer, which at best will be 5%. In this regard, remember that effective decorative screens for radiators should be characterized by the presence of the maximum number of holes, which will facilitate the unhindered movement of warm air.

To increase heat transfer from the radiator, it is necessary to install a screen made of foil material behind the battery. Due to this, the heat will be reflected from it and flow into the heated room.

Important! Experts recommend paying attention to another technique that reduces heat loss. It involves painting the inner panel of the screen black, so that the screen absorbs the maximum amount of heat from the radiator and releases it into the room.

Due to the fact that the radiators must be flushed and the water drained at the end of the heating season, the screen design should be easily disassembled and removed. This condition must be strictly observed, since the frequent dismantling of decorative elements creates additional difficulties. In addition, the design must be such that free access to the battery valves is maintained. If you are purchasing a ready-made design, pay attention to the screen for the Leroy Merlin radiator, the model of which meets all of the above requirements.

Do-it-yourself radiator screen: step by step instructions

First of all, decide on the type of desired design. If the decorated battery is located in a niche, a flat screen is suitable for its design. In such cases, a decorative grille is selected taking into account the size of the niche and simply installed in it.

Most often, the batteries are suspended on a section of the wall under the window, and therefore, it is recommended to give preference to hinged screens for radiators.

Materials and tools for installation

Among all the options for making a screen for a radiator, the most common is the installation of a screen made of MDF or chipboard. For its manufacture, the following materials and tools will be required:

  • Chipboard sheets, the color scheme of which is in harmony with the interior of the room;
  • Mesh, supplied in sheet form, to be used for mounting the front panel and side pieces;
  • Sheet of metal for the manufacture of a reflective element;
  • Nails and wood glue;
  • Fasteners, represented by building brackets and screws.

Radiator Screen Mounting Diagram

The simplest screen design for a radiator is a box in the form of a three-sided box, which is characterized by the presence of a lid on top and legs on the bottom. To assemble the screen, it is necessary to mark the structure, cut out the parts in accordance with the received scheme, connect them and fix them.

Scheme for marking and trimming parts

  • The first step is to measure the width and height of the radiator. It is necessary to add 10 cm to the resulting width, while only 5 cm to the height. Taking into account these dimensions, the front panel of the screen is made. For installation, you can use a steel mesh, which is subsequently supplemented with an MDF profile;
  • Next, measure the depth of the radiator and add 2.5 cm to the obtained value. The resulting figure is the width of the side panels of the screen, the height of which corresponds to the height of the front panel;
  • The dimensions of the screen cover are measured in a similar way, however, its dimensions should be 1-2 cm larger than the dimensions of the side panels.
  • After completing all the necessary measurements, you need to start trimming the parts. For the manufacture of the front profile, sheets of chipboard or MDF are used, from which rectangular parts 11 cm wide are cut out and, using a hacksaw, an angle of 45 degrees is formed at the points of contact of the parts.

Important! Having cut out the front profile, note that it is necessary to form multidirectional corners on it. Using this scheme, it is necessary to cut out all four parts from which the internal lattice of the decorative element is made. For their fixation, carpentry glue is used and additionally fixed with carpentry cloves.

How to assemble the screen?

After you have completed all the previous steps and cut out the required number of parts, you need to assemble the decorative screen.

  • To make a facade panel, use a grid from which you can easily cut a part of the desired size with a hacksaw. To decorate the edges, use a chipboard profile, which must be placed around the entire perimeter from the inside of the front corners. The side parts are assembled in the same way.

Important! If you plan to use the top of the box as a shelf, choose a solid board for its manufacture, otherwise, give preference to options with holes designed to let warm air out.

  • Make the frame of the future screen, using the drawings widely presented on the pages of construction sites. It must be securely fastened, and cut holes for pipes in the side faces, the center of the radius of which should be at a distance of 7.5 cm from the height and width of the side bar;
  • Before proceeding with the assembly of the screen, it is necessary to install a metal reflector screen at the rear wall, the dimensions of which must correspond to the dimensions of the decorative screen. Thanks to this, you will prevent heat loss and redirect the flow of infrared radiation from the radiator into the room.
  • There are several options for attaching a decorative radiator to the wall. This can be done by mounting a stable frame, as described in our case, it is also possible to fix the screen on anchor collets. The second method, in view of the need to purchase expensive parts, is quite expensive.
  • Lattices can be installed on legs, which are attached to the bottom of the product using building corners. This option has some advantages, since using adjustable legs, you can adjust the height of the structure.

We examined a fairly common method of making a screen for a radiator with our own hands, for which only improvised materials are needed. If you are not sure that the screen you have made will cope with its functional purpose, you can purchase ready-made models, for example, Leroy Merlin radiator screens, made at the highest level and widely represented in construction and furniture hypermarkets.

How to make a screen for a video radiator

Installing a screen for a heating battery with your own hands

Screens for radiators are a modern solution to the problem of obsolete heating elements that do not fit well into the interior. With relative cheapness and ease of installation, the screen eliminates the need to replace the radiator and supply pipes.

The screen for the battery is hung either on special brackets or directly on the elements of the heating system, which makes installation possible even without special skills and permits within 15-20 minutes.

Screens for batteries are metal products that visually cover radiators for heating that are not very pleasant in appearance, most of which are decorative meshes for transmitting heat.
Screens for batteries are very relevant during renovation, as they are able to give the room a finished look.

Probably, many will agree that beautiful curtains or stylish blinds do not look at all with "Soviet"-style batteries, even if they are painted. In addition, the shape of previously manufactured batteries today does not look so aesthetically pleasing. Screens on radiators will help solve the problem.

They will hide the unsightly appearance of the pipe. In addition to decorative functions, battery screens perform several protective functions. Everyone knows how quickly dust settles on the battery. Installed in the apartment screens on radiators serve as an excellent obstacle to the "ubiquitous" dust.

But not only this function ensures the demand for our products. Batteries of an outdated design quite often cause injuries. This circumstance must be taken into account if children live in the apartment. Due to the absence of sharp points in the design, these products are absolutely safe.

The perforated screen is more environmentally friendly. It looks much sleeker than its metal brother. You can make patterns at the request of the client, which will increase the cost of the goods, and, consequently, your profit. To make a radiator, we need a wooden plank, plywood or chipboard, a sheet of perforated chipboard, a saw or a jigsaw, self-tapping screws, paint, varnish, foil. Most likely, you have the tools, and the materials are easy to buy at the construction market or stores like OBI.

To begin with, it is worth building two square profiles according to the size of the battery with an allowance of 5-7 cm on the sides, and on the underside to the floor. After that, the top, them and the sides of the profiles are sheathed with plywood, plasterboard or chipboard around the perimeter, leaving the back and front sides open.

Then we put a sheet of foil behind the battery, put on the screen and connect the whole structure. Foil is needed to better reflect heat. If the pipes approach the radiator from the side, you will need to cut a hole to put on the screen.

Another option is not to make side walls and put the screen on top. The choice is at the discretion of the customer. After that, you will have to cut out a decorative lattice from perforated chipboard to size and attach it to the screen from the front side. Next, the screen can be painted or varnished to give the desired shade.

First you need to soak the rattan cloth in warm water in the bathroom or in a large basin for about two hours, so that the cloth is easier to pull on the wooden frame, since it is very hard and fragile at the same time when dry.

Assemble the wooden frame. To do this, you need ordinary wooden slats about 2x3cm. (photo attached). Stretch the canvas over the frame and secure it with small nails or a furniture stapler and leave to dry.

Then the platbands are connected to each other at a right angle, with the same furniture stapler. When the individual parts of the screen are ready, it is necessary to fasten the frame to the frame from the casing with screws from the inside.

Naturally, before work, you carefully measure the size of the hole in the wall in front of the battery. So that subsequently the frame enters exactly into the opening. By the way, if a designer is sleeping in you, then the platbands can be painted using the craquelure technique, or you can choose the platbands not in the color of the walls, but, for example, in the color of the plinth, this is someone who has enough imagination for what, it looks just gorgeous!

The result of the work done is attached for viewing.

How to install the screen on the battery?

First of all, you need to carefully measure the dimensions of the radiator, and then compare the obtained data with the dimensions of the screen. Only after making sure that the dimensions are suitable, you can begin to measure out the basting for the holes. To accurately make holes in the wall for mounting the screen, you can attach the screen itself to the wall as it would be attached and, be sure to use a level, make sure that it is located exactly horizontally.

Then you should use a drill or pencil to mark the places where the holes for the screws will subsequently be made. It's best to check the basting a few times before installing the battery screen. We carefully consider the diameter of the plastic dowels. For mounting battery shields, either dowels with a diameter of 6 mm or 8 mm are usually used.

There is no point in using larger diameter dowels, since the mass of the screen is not so large and there will not be such a large load on the screws. As a rule, their outer diameter is written on the dowels. The drill for drilling the wall must be selected according to this parameter of the dowel. If drilling is carried out in a concrete wall, then the dimensions of the drill must match the dimensions of the dowel.

If drilling is carried out in a brick or boiler wall, then it is better to select a drill that is slightly thinner than the diameter of the dowel, since in a brick, as a rule, the hole is slightly wider than the planned size. The screen on the battery will be difficult to install if the dowels are loose. After making the holes, it is recommended to remove any remaining dust from them.

For this, a small brush is usually used. The fact is that dust can act as a lubricant, and with a strong impact, the dowel can come out of the wall along with the screw. If you remove the dust, then the dowel will firmly fit in the hole. Insert plastic dowels into the prepared holes and drive them deep into the hole until they stop.

The dowel should not protrude beyond the edges of the hole, but rather let it be a little “drowned” inside the hole. Some DIYers recommend using a bit of epoxy or epoxy glue when installing the dowels. The edges of the hole are coated with resin or glue before driving the dowel.

While the glue is wet, it is like a lubricant, it helps to drive in the dowel. But as soon as it hardens, the dowel is firmly glued to the walls of the hole. Once the holes are ready, you can proceed to install the screen. Aligning its loops with the holes, you need to put screws into them and fix them tightly.

Decorative screens for heating radiators. Types of decorative screens for heating radiators: a box screen, a panel screen in a niche, hinged screens, screen mounts .. Do-it-yourself decorative screen. how to choose a decorative screen for a radiator, learn from the article

The interior of heating radiators is no less significant than the interior of the closet in the hallway. A decorative screen in a hand-made design is not only a good disguise, but also an additional heated surface. If you properly fix the decorative screen and place it in a niche, you can ennoble the living space. And if you install a stylish screen made of opaque glass, then you can imagine how a boring heater will change.

How to ennoble an ancient battery

When making repairs in an apartment or a private house with your own hands, you always want it to be warm and beautiful. But the abandoned old-fashioned and clumsy cast-iron radiators, to put it mildly, do not always fit into the updated interesting interior.

What can be done to improve the appearance of the heater? These can be decorative screens that serve as an element of decoration and well pass the flow of heat from the radiator.

Naturally, the necessary conditions for choosing a material for a radiator grille or screen should be its worthy heat-conducting properties and an attractive appearance.

Otherwise, why then arrange this masquerade at all. Recall that the materials that provide the best thermal conductivity from heating radiators are: metal, wood, plastic and glass.

What are the screens for heating radiators

Today, for the decorative design of heating radiators, you can choose the following types of screens:

Protective screen-box

Flat panel with niche

Hanging screen.

screen-box

A simple and optimal solution for covering heating radiators is a protective box screen. The protective box is used if necessary to close direct access to the heater. The screen for this type of radiators can be compared to a beautifully designed cabinet installed along the wall.

It is not difficult to build such a device. The protective screen-box can have a stationary structure, tightly fixed on the wall, or a movable version. A prerequisite for the installation of a box screen is the possibility of direct access to the shut-off valves of the radiators.

For box screens, it is better to give preference to a carpentry manufactory that can hide heating radiators in the best way.

It is desirable that the front side of the heater has a continuous surface. Wooden slat grilles or rattan meshes that allow access and convection of heated air currents are the most acceptable solution.

In addition, the originality of the design allows the use of such boxes in the form of additional shelves or countertops.

screen-box mount

The box is fastened in the traditional way: the box is first assembled, and then it is installed in place and attached to the wall using corners and self-tapping screws.

However, screen-boxes made of wood-like panels with openwork lattices are no longer fashionable. However, inexpensive metal mesh screens are also not an original option. As a result, a deaf rectangular metal box will be obtained for the accumulation of dust, which will rattle from an accidental impact of any object. An outdated and boring way to ennoble the battery is safely replaced by panels and hinged screens.

recessed panel screen

Decorative screens for flat-shaped heating radiators exaggeratedly represent a frame with a filled interior space. The screen grille is made of various materials: metal and plastic. I install flat panels on the battery for heaters located in niches. The most correct solution would be the execution of a combination of a false wall and an open niche.

This type of screen can lead to inevitable heat loss, but if the room has an area of less than 20 sq.m., then it is permissible to install a false wall with a radiator. Naturally, the outer part of the screen must have the maximum number of perforations for the passage of air.

The optimal solution for the panel screen is a niche along the width of the window. The screen in this case should reach almost to the level of the windowsill.

This will create a common vertical solution and layout. It should be remembered that the gaps for the passage of warm air must be located near the windowsill and floor.

There are several types of mounting screens for radiators: fastening with self-tapping screws to the rails, assembling the structure with stops and a top panel. In this case, a special mounting recess is made in the top panel, with which the screen is placed when installed on the radiator.

flat screen mount

Screen fastening must be coordinated with the overall construction of a niche and a false wall. This method is time consuming and requires precise calculation. At the same time, it must be remembered that heating radiators should not protrude beyond the boundaries and limits of the created drywall niche.

The video will tell you to help build a drywall niche to mask the battery.

hinged screens

Hinged screens are a mobile and simple option for decorating a battery. Hinged screens can be made with or without a cover. Hinged screens with a lid are preferably used for radiators protruding from under the window sill or the plane of the walls.

Screens without a cover are designed for appliances located under a window sill in a shallow niche.

An excellent material for decorating a heating radiator can be confidently called opaque tempered glass.

Installation of decorative glass screens

For screens, it is preferable to use tempered glass up to 8 mm thick, 2300x1000 mm in size. The screens are fastened to the wall on point remote holders with extension.

The length of the remote holders (from 20 to 30 cm) allows you to install the screen on cast iron and aluminum radiators.

If necessary, the separation from the wall is adjusted using special hinged remote holders. A plug is put on the front of the holder, which is on the same plane with the glass or slightly protruding.

Spacers can be used on concrete, natural stone and solid brick.

The type of fastening of glass screens can be open and closed, withstanding a maximum load of up to 20 kg.

In this case, the placement of the mount can be positioned relative to the elements of the existing interior. In addition, the decorative glass screen is an excellent appearance, the merits of which can only be dreamed of.

The removal of heated air is carried out from all sides in a natural way, bypassing any obstacles.

So maybe it makes sense to make the dream a reality?

DIY battery screen (+ photo)

The screen for the battery is another opportunity to give the interior of the room a unique zest. True, there is one minus here: any attempt to close the battery with anything at all leads to the fact that the warm air from it encounters obstacles in its path and, as a result, the room may become a little colder. In order to at least partially compensate for this shortcoming, a heat-reflecting screen must be fixed to the wall behind the battery.

Material and tools

Metal corner
Laminated chipboard To make a battery screen, you will need: a hacksaw, a pencil, a ruler, a tape measure, a hammer, a drill. A hacksaw can be replaced by an electric jigsaw. You also need screws of a suitable length and small nails, as well as metal corners. To attach the screen to the wall, you will need two hangers (they are usually used for wall cabinets) and dowel-nails of the appropriate diameter.

The battery screen is easiest to make from wood, chipboard (plain or laminated), or thick plywood. At the same time, the front part - the screen panel - can already be bought ready-made in the store, or you can make it yourself, for example, twist the furniture edge in the form of a "lattice" (with a bottom layer of thermal glue).

Note! The smaller the total area of the holes in the screen panel, the worse the battery will heat the house.

Wallpaper self-adhesive
Note! If you decide to use materials that do not have a beautiful front side for the manufacture of the screen, it is better to paste over the finished product with self-adhesive wallpaper of a suitable color.

To make a heat-reflecting screen behind the battery, you will need a polystyrene foil substrate of any thickness, scissors and glue (you can use Bustilat or PVA).

How to do

Screen frame for battery
  • First, you should decide on the design of the screen for the battery: it can be made hinged or resting on the floor in the room.
  • The next step is to make a drawing (by hand on paper) of the future screen for the battery, measuring the width and height of the battery, as well as the distance from the wall to the place where the screen panel is fixed. Add to the values obtained:
    • 3-4 centimeters on each side - to the width of the screen (this will allow air to circulate more efficiently),
    • 2-3 centimeters - to the distance from the wall to the screen panel.

Painted screen frame
Screen installation drawing
  • Attach the screen bezel to the box with small studs. To improve the appearance around the perimeter of the panel, you can fix small slats, creating the appearance of framing it into a frame.
  • Cover the sides of the screen with self-adhesive wallpaper, if necessary. The slats around the front panel can be coated with special wood finishes to give the right shade.

Battery shield resting on the floor
  • Then you should fix the screen for the battery on the wall (if the screen is simply installed on the floor in the room, this stage of work is not relevant for you). The difficulty is that the screen must be removable, otherwise you simply won’t be able to wash the battery later or get to the valves that regulate the temperature of its heating. Therefore, two hangers must be attached to the battery screen box on the back side at the top. Next, attach the finished screen to the battery and mark the holes for drilling with a pencil. Remove the screen, drill holes, hammer plastic dowels into them and screw in the screws. It remains only to hang the screen for the battery in its permanent place.

Heat Reflective Foil Screen
  • If you want to make a heat-reflecting screen behind the battery, then cut out a rectangle from the foil substrate exactly according to the inside size of the screen box. Then cut holes in it for hooks coming out of the wall (the battery is held on them) and glue the resulting heat-reflecting screen to the wall (with the foil out).

Hang the screen in place and make sure that the foil does not peek out from under it.

Alternative option

battery decor If you don’t have the opportunity to purchase or make a screen, you can use an alternative option - apply an oil painting to the battery.
Note! For the best effect, the drawing is applied not only to the battery, but also to a part of the wall near it in such a way that the effect of lack of volume is created (that is, the front of the battery and the wall surface are conditionally one plane).

100 photos of modern species and features of their installation

The familiar look of heating batteries, which do not differ in a variety of shapes and colors, makes us think about their disguise. The official style and neutral colors of pipes and radiators are almost impossible to fit into a stylish interior without an appropriate decorative cover.

Ready-made panels and parts made of various materials allow you to install the screen on batteries with your own hands, but it is necessary to take into account the features of such structures, which, with the right approach, will not only decorate the room, but also keep warm during the heating season.

Pros and cons

Screens for radiators, as evidenced by the design developments in the photo, create home comfort and can become an important element of style. At the same time, decorative boxes and shields also perform a protective function, protecting radiators from dust accumulation and mechanical damage.

Installing the screen on cast iron batteries with a high heating temperature is an important measure to protect against burns. Closed niches under windows also reduce the risk of injury, especially in cases where there are children at home.

The choice of materials and designs depends not only on aesthetic taste, but also on requests for easier maintenance of cleanliness and energy saving.

So, respectable natural wood panels will inevitably lead to heat loss, complex carved decor will make cleaning difficult. An open top and bottom will help reduce heat loss, but make cleaning much more difficult.

Perforation is another mandatory condition in the manufacture of decorative screens for batteries. Regardless of the material used, the main panel must have through cells that allow air to pass through. Design solutions can be different: lattices, wickerwork, blinds or cutout patterns.

Concealed box and panel structures are not airtight and therefore it is important that they are easily removed to provide access to the batteries for cleanliness and emergency purposes.

Covers can also be provided, as well as side and bottom panels, which can be opened or removed during the heating period in order to increase air circulation.

To reduce heat loss, the inner surface of the screens and the wall adjacent to the battery can be covered with a special roll material - heat-reflecting polypropylene or aluminum-coated film.

The choice of material for the screen on the battery

High-quality wood is the most noble material for decor; it can be used to make both elegant carved lace and strict boxes in a classic style. But when choosing a wooden screen for the battery, you will have to put up with the loss of heat and take care of a special heat-resistant coating that prevents deformation.

Standard metal boxes with gratings as screens will allow you to spend the heating season with virtually no losses. They absorb only 3% of heat. Elite option - forged stainless steel screens.

Inexpensive economy-class plastic screens are easy to install and match the style, but unfortunately, they lose their external gloss very quickly.

MDF is another common material for decorative masking of batteries, it is easy to clean and there is a wide choice of colors and textures.

In combined versions, bamboo, straw wicker, or perforated plasterboard panel can be installed on frames or boxes made of wood, metal or plastic.

Glass screens are at the forefront of fashion, and you should pay attention to them because of their hygiene and durability, provided they are protected from mechanical damage. The special sophistication of solid shields made of tempered or stained glass is not disputed.

Modern technologies make it possible to obtain any color solutions, with additional possibilities for applying drawings and patterns using sandblasting or digital printing.

Possibility of an alternative

If the budget does not allow, or there is no desire to start choosing a new interior detail, which, in any case, will require additional care efforts, decorating the radiator itself may be the best screen replacement.

The easiest method is painting with ordinary oil paint. At the same time, in order to achieve the effect of masking, it is possible to enter the battery, pipes and the adjacent wall into a single pattern.

A standard radiator is a convenient object for realizing creativity in your favorite style: it can be covered with a chintz pattern or a picturesque picture using decoupage and acrylic paints, or simply “aged” to match the loft style.

Screens for batteries, types, features, nuances of installation and use

Despite the large supply of heating appliances, in most apartments and houses, old-style heating batteries remain in their places. They often have an unsightly and unaesthetic appearance, so they need to be decorated. It is not always possible to replace them, and not only for financial reasons. But also simply because they, perhaps, perfectly perform their heating functions and there is not much point in changing them. What to do in this case? There is an exit! The production of decorative screens has long been established, which not only cover the batteries, but also harmonize with the interior of the room, performing an additional function of protecting children - from burns, animals - from getting paws and tails between the sections of the radiator.

What are battery screens and what are they

Screens for radiators are protective structure for radiators, giving the room a more aesthetic appearance and protecting against burns at a high heating temperature of the coolant

To ennoble our old, as a rule, cast-iron batteries, we put a screen made of various materials in front of them. But in what way? And will it affect the heating properties of radiators?

Due to the fact that it is cast-iron batteries that most often want to close, it is necessary that chokes or valves on the supply line were available, as you have to adjust the temperature at the beginning or end of the season, and for the upper floors it is often necessary to drain the water if air enters the system at start-up. Sometimes you have to completely disconnect the radiator when a section leaks and needs to be replaced. Therefore, the screen on the radiator must be either open-ended. Or easy to take off. And because the heat sink radiates heat to a greater extent with its surface, the screen surface should be as small as possible for reduction of thermal energy losses. Depending on the mounting method, the screens can be in the form of a box for protruding batteries or panels for radiators in a niche. Screen material can be any:

  • MDF - medium density fibreboard;
  • HDF - high density fibreboard;
  • metal;
  • rattan;
  • glass;
  • wood;
  • plastic.

When choosing screens for radiators, you should be guided by your preferences in the color scheme, in the feeling of accepting the picture on the screen, its severity or delicacy, as well as in the material of manufacture.

Glass screens

Glass screens are decorative protection of ugly batteries from our sight. They are made from tempered glass at least 8 mm thick, they are almost impossible to break. The edges of the screen are polished, which gives them strength and makes the edges safe to use. According to the technology, a special substance is applied to the glass itself, which has protective properties and allows further washing of glasses using ordinary detergents.

Glass screens do not reduce convection, cold air enters from below, and warm air rises, and there are no obstacles for thermal radiation, the glass freely passes the sun's rays, dismantling, if necessary, is easy and fast.

There is another type of glass screens - acrylic. Acrylic glass is thinner, its thickness is up to 2.5 cm, the main advantage of which is less weight. Acrylic glass has the widest range of colors and can be easily transformed into various forms.

Advantages glass screens:

  • maximum heat transfer;
  • giving a modern look to any old-style batteries;
  • a huge selection of decorative types such as photo printing, coloring, deep etching, satin, toning.

You can order a screen for the battery, taking into account the existing interior in the room, in order to complement and decorate it. This is especially important for those who love any particular style. The screen may be flowers, city, portraits, anything .

Screens can be transparent, matte, plain, they can be LED light connected. Screens are mounted either to the wall or stand on stands. Photo printing can be applied to them, this is ideal for those who like to frequently change the interior of a room.

The use of curved technology will give the screen any desired shape and it will help create a unique look for your battery.

Prices for glass screens are different, depending on the size, thickness of the glass and applied drawing, as well as installation and delivery. Approximate price for 1 sq. m:

  • transparent screens - from 8,000 rubles;
  • matte screens - from 10,000 rubles;
  • color screens - from 11,000 rubles;
  • screens with a sandblasted pattern - from 13,000 rubles;
  • screens with photo printing method - from 15,000 rubles.

Video presentation of glass screens

Metal screens for radiators made of steel or aluminum mesh, good heat transfer. Not trapping it in an enclosed space, but this happens when there are large openings in the grate. Although the metal has good thermal conductivity, the heat output is also reduced by reducing the surface area.

On the other hand, metal screens can be easily mounted, they come in different colors and patterns, with and without a sidewall, in the form of an openwork lattice and a combination of a solid canvas with an open space. All this does not affect the main functions of the screen - they they look great, protect the radiators themselves from dust and dirt and give the home comfort.

Screen prices vary by size. For example, for perforated screens with a height of 400 mm, the cost increases from 1680 rubles. (700 mm long) up to 4320 r. (1800 mm), and for 800 mm height - from 2002r. (700 mm long) up to 5148 rubles (1800 mm).

Decorative screens of the "Classic" series are manufactured from environmentally friendly materials, the frame is made of MDF, and the inner part is made of profiled sheet 3 mm thick. Perforation patterns are varied, they can be selected for every taste.

The price for a screen with a size of 400*600 mm starts from 698 rubles, and with its increase to 600*1500 mm, you will have to pay 1739 rubles.

Wooden screens

An open battery immediately catches the eye and in the apartment they seek to decorate it with something. For this come to the rescue wooden wooden lattices, covering old cast-iron batteries, they are made of natural beech and oak trees. Such screens durable and reliable. They can be: painted and not, enameled or tinted. So that the gratings do not interfere with the passage of heat, they are not mounted on the floor, but are raised a certain distance above the floor. For better air circulation, holes are made at the top of the box.

Wooden grilles are especially good in children's institutions, where they cover all plumbing elements. Inexpensive screens are made of slatted fabric, good flow of warm air from radiators and at the same time perform a protective function. The price of such a screen starts from 1400 rubles. for 1 m rm., with a rail thickness of 28 mm, but already covered with water-based varnish will be 1600 r. for 1 m

On author's wooden lattices, the cost will certainly be higher, but also the look is much better. Decorative screens of the "Comfort" series, made of MDF with a size of 55 or 70 mm and laminated to look like precious wood using perforated HDF panels, will cost from 1240 to 5450 rubles. per screen depending on its size.

The use of rattan as a lattice filler make it even more expensive, and it will cost from 2040 to 5450 rubles. behind the screen.

Plastic screens

It should be noted that plastic does not have the thermal conductivity of either steel or aluminum, and cheap varieties have low mechanical strength, so it is necessary to make shields from thicker material, which leads to even more heat loss. When heated strongly, plastic begins to release toxic substances, so they cannot be used in child care facilities. Experts recommend using them in non-residential or office premises. The screen is lightweight, resistant to moisture, corrosion-resistant, and does not heat up. But it has a small price (200 rubles for the bars).

The following conclusion can be drawn from what has been said. When choosing a screen for radiators, you should keep in mind not only the beauty of your interior. But also about the screen itself, decorating your home, did not worsen the microclimate of your premises during the cold season. Therefore, choose screens with a minimal surface, leaving at least a few centimeters from the floor for air movement.

Modern rules for the design of premises, as well as growing safety requirements, recommend restricting access to heating devices or at least partially blocking them.

Therefore, various types of screens have been developed, including those made of metal, which can be used both as decoration and as protection against accidental contact with them. In addition, they can also be used to decorate other elements of the heating system, as well as to partially mask some unwanted details in the room.

Metal screens for radiators act as a decor and a practical element

Metal battery shields feature a complete, ready-to-install design to fit most sizes of these products. The industry offers models for heating appliances not only of a new type, but also of an old one, made of cast iron, steel and aluminum. Their price depends on the size and type of product.

Where to use them

When decorating or finishing a room, a situation can often arise when the installed old heaters do not fit into the new interior and spoil it with their appearance. In this case, their complete or partial replacement will be quite expensive, so metal screens have been developed to hide the unaesthetic nature of such products.

Metal hinged screens for radiators help hide the unaesthetic cast iron sections

With their help, it is possible to block the view of the front surface of the radiator, the upper and end surfaces. However, there are also structures that allow the creation of single extended ceilings along the walls, consisting of several decorative screens for radiators of the heating system, which allows them to be used as an independent decorative element.

Why was it customary to use a battery guard anyway? This is due to the very high temperature of the coolants in the heating devices, which can be especially dangerous in kindergartens, administrative and educational buildings, and medical rooms. Designed metal screens for radiators in this case are mandatory to prevent accidental contact with their hot surface.

Metal screen on the radiator with holes for free air circulation

Their special application can be found in rooms where there are complex inputs of highways, openings and niches, ventilation ducts and other similar elements.

Metal screens of the following designs cover completely or partially such areas:

  • in the form of a flat panel;
  • with an upper open or deaf plane;
  • with side and top planes;
  • in the form of a box. (See also the article Pipe box: features.)

Tip: you can use them in individual structures and installations that require closing openings and passages while ensuring the circulation of air masses.

Flat and convex screens

Kinds

Metal screens for heating appliances are made with:

  • different structural elements;
  • additional structures of various types;
  • full or partial overlap in planes;
  • different design of the front surface.

It will not be difficult to install them with your own hands.

Design differences
  1. Fastening system and lattice part:

In the photo - types of screens for heating appliances

  1. The presence of the upper and end planes with or without their own mesh inserts:
    • the first can be made in a removable version or made from one sheet with the front panel;
    • the latter are made taking into account the pipelines supplied and may have ready-made places for them or prepared holes that are easy to make.

Some models allow you to connect multiple faceplates into a single structure using end plate fasteners. In this case, it is possible to manufacture a metal screen for radiators of large or non-standard lengths.

Tip: using prefabricated structures, you can install products along the entire wall so that they immediately cover the batteries and the pipelines connected to them.

Metal screens for radiators are produced in various sizes

Product Features

Screens for metal radiators, although simple in design, have several mandatory characteristics. Thanks to this, it is possible to mount them on radiators and operate for a long time without changing the parameters.

Let's consider these characteristics in more detail:

  • size- is selected according to the size of the heating device being designed;
  • strength- ensures the preservation of geometry and position after a small mechanical load;
  • coating heat resistance- its properties and color should not change under the influence of high temperature;
  • required grid capacity- after using a metal screen, the instruction requires that the air circulation near the radiator does not decrease;
  • the ability to quickly dismantle the entire structure or its individual parts during maintenance and repair work.

Conclusion

Metal screens for heating radiators are a simple universal product that eliminates most undesirable situations. With their help, it is possible not only to mask some sections of the walls, but also to protect people from accidentally touching the hot elements of the heating system.

Currently, such structures are used in many rooms, which indicates their simplicity and accessibility. The video in the article will help you find additional information on this topic.

Decora Expert includes 2 self-tapping screws and 2 dowels for all screens. To install the screen-box, you may need the following tools:

1. drill

2. Jigsaw

3. Level

4. Pencil

5. Screwdriver

First of all, we attach the box to the wall and, using a level and a pencil, make marks on the wall in those places where it is necessary to make a hole for the self-tapping screw. Using a D6 drill, we make holes and insert dowels into them. Then we screw in the screws, so that they can hang the product.

How to install the screen for the battery - frame

Frames in a niche are attached to the wall as simply as boxes. To install this product, you will need the same tools - a drill with a D6 drill, a jigsaw, a pencil level and a screwdriver. We attach the frame to the wall, measure the level of the place where it is necessary to make a hole and mark with a pencil. In these places, using a drill, we make holes, insert the dowel and screw in the screws. On the reverse side of the frame there are special canopies with which the frame is attached to the screws.

For a more accurate picture, we have prepared visual information on installing battery screens:

Step 1.

A. Our battery is located in a niche. We decided to choose a niche without a plinth, and a window sill is located on top. Thus, the product will be fixed on the right and left side of the wall. Be sure to use a level, as the slightest inaccuracy can lead to the impossibility of installing the screen.

Q. For the box, we chose a standard battery, with the right eyeliner, which will be hidden behind the screen along with the radiator.

Before making marks on the wall, measure the distance to the mount on the product itself (as a rule, all mounts are located in the center of the product, but there may be non-standard indents).

STEP 2.

After you have made a hole, you need to drive a dowel into it, then screw in a self-tapping screw on the right and left sides of the wall.

Step 3

For the box and for the frame, we use different fasteners.

Install or on a niche using fasteners, as indicated in the picture. As you can see, nothing complicated. It is enough to have the necessary tools at hand.
