How to make a garden in an aquarium. Mini garden in a bottle with your own hands: grandiose ideas for a tiny florarium. For which plants is an airtight vessel suitable, and for which an open vessel

The desire to bring a piece of nature into the everyday atmosphere of the apartment is natural. A small area, active pets, or allergic problems can be barriers to indoor plant cultivation. The florarium, the design of which has become a fashionable trend in recent years, will help out in a difficult situation. Purchased copies equipped with an automatic process control system will cost a lot. It is much more profitable to do the design of the florarium with your own hands. We will tell you in detail how to make an original composition yourself.

Types of florariums and theme compositions

Before embarking on the creative process of creating a florarium, you should familiarize yourself with the variety of models, placement options and the rules for selecting plants. For the design of the original composition, the following containers are suitable:

  • Various aquariums. The presence of a cover and lighting facilitate the process of caring for plants in the florarium.
  • Transparent vases, glasses and glass jars of various sizes and configurations.
  • Laboratory flasks and bottles represent the most difficult option for decorating a plant composition.

Comment! The beauty of the florarium practically does not depend on the size or sophistication of the vessel itself. The originality of the mini garden is achieved by a competent selection of plants for decoration.

In most cases, the florarium is placed on a flat surface, it can be a window sill or a table. Less often choose the option of hanging from the ceiling. With a lack of free space, a good option would be to mount a florarium with a composition of plants on the wall.

The filling of the vessel depends on the preferred theme. The special atmosphere of the florarium allows you to create different climatic zones and natural landscapes:

  • very often they resort to the design of the tropics;
  • for beginners, it will be easier to cope with the care of the desert landscape;
  • mountain landscape or dense forest - with a competent approach of a florist, the boundaries of fantasy practically do not exist.

Plant selection

To create a harmonious composition, you need to know which plants for the florarium are best suited. When choosing, they are guided by the following recommendations:

  • It is optimal to stop at slow-growing representatives of the flora, this will facilitate the subsequent care of the florarium. Although in conditions of insufficient soil, any specimen tends to slow down growth. In some cases, when making a composition, they resort to pruning the roots.
  • An important factor in the selection are similar conditions of detention.
  • Imitations of a desert landscape are facilitated by compositions of succulents (euphorbia, aloe, crassula and cacti).
  • Making the effect of a dense forest is impossible without the use of moss and ferns. Sphagnum moss is especially popular, among the fern family - maidenhair, multi-row, pteris, etc.
  • Flowering plants in the form of alocasia, violet, dieffenbachia and orchids are ideal for decorating a tropical composition. Here, moderation should be observed and 1-2 flowering representatives of the flora should be planted in the florarium. High-quality ventilation is a prerequisite for the safety of such plants.
  • Combining various ivy with succulents will recreate a mountain landscape.

Advice! If you wish to combine plants that are incompatible according to the conditions of keeping in the florarium, the following trick will help: individual specimens are placed in pots, masking the containers with pebbles. Such a design creates a complete picture of the composition, and care is carried out on an individual basis.

Materials to create

Depending on the chosen model of the florarium and the theme of the composition, the materials for decoration vary, but in general, you will need:

  • aquarium or other glass container;
  • components for the formation of drainage at the bottom (coarse sand, broken brick and pebbles);
  • soil suitable for a particular type of plant;
  • colored sand is often used as a bottom decor;
  • when choosing a volumetric container with a wide neck, standard tools for planting vegetation will come in handy;
  • miniature vessels require the use of tweezers, crochet hooks, teaspoons and blades attached to long sticks;
  • completeness of the composition will be given by additional decorative elements when decorated in the form of figures of animals, shells, pearls, interesting stones;
  • in conclusion, for watering plants, depending on the shape of the florarium, you will need a spray gun or syringe.

Advice! The following proportion relative to the height of the container used will help to combine the attractive appearance of the composition with comfortable living conditions for plants: 1 part of drainage elements, 3 parts of soil and 1 part of decorative material in the form of coarse sand, small pebbles or moss.

Step-by-step instructions will help you understand how to make a florarium with your own hands.

Rookie Tryouts

A high jar is the optimal capacity for beginner florarium designers. The registration process will require the following materials:

  • a jar with a capacity of 3 liters or more;
  • charcoal;
  • 1 part of peat is taken as soil for 2 parts of leafy land;
  • scoop, watering can and gloves;
  • moss and suitable plants, in our case it is cryptanthus, balsam, asplenium.

The Composition Design Guide contains the following items:

The resulting composition is located in an area with diffused lighting, this will limit the growth of plants due to the lack of direct sunlight. Watering an open-type florarium is done about once a week, it all depends on the plants chosen for decoration. With excessive growth, the extra leaves are cut off.

Making a desert in a candy vase

Florarium of succulents and cacti is easy to design and further care. But thanks to the combination of several types of cacti in the composition, it looks extremely attractive.

Advice! Do not miss the opportunity to use painted cacti in the design of the desert florarium. The brightness of the composition will be provided.

For the creative process you will need:

  • a flattened candy vase with cylindrical outlines;
  • soil in which succulents and cacti feel comfortable;
  • directly the plants themselves for the design of the composition;
  • expanded clay or small pebbles, which simultaneously perform two functions: drainage and decorative.

Before filling the florarium, the vase is thoroughly washed in hot water, dried and degreased.

Step-by-step instructions for designing a desert composition:

Plants in the form of succulents and cacti do not need frequent watering. The lack of liquid limits their growth, which is a favorable moment when caring for the florarium. To maintain the composition in the proper form, watering is carried out every 50-60 days, the only regular action is the removal of dust from the florarium.

The original florarium in a hanging vessel

The wide opening of the container greatly simplifies the process of decorating the florarium. A round miniature aquarium, a voluminous decorative glass or a drop-shaped hanging vessel are good options for creating an exquisite composition. Prepare the following materials:

  • a vessel with a capacity of 1.5-2.0 l;
  • plants that are combined according to the conditions of keeping, as an option, you can take 1 stone rose, a couple of saxifrage bushes;
  • drainage design materials, soil and charcoal;
  • decorative elements (snags, figurines or houses);
  • spoon, tweezers, spray gun, scissors.

As in the previous master class, the vessel chosen for the design of the florarium is thoroughly washed and degreased with alcohol.

The creative process for creating a composition includes the following steps:

Caring for the florarium does not contain innovations: the absence of direct sunlight with a sufficient amount of diffused lighting, periodic watering.

Sophistication of geometric shapes

The trend of recent years is the design of florariums of geometric shapes, which are made using Tiffany technology. Many facets, coupled with their asymmetrical arrangement, contribute to the formation of unique outlines. It is difficult to make a geometric florarium on your own, it is better to purchase a finished product and proceed with the design.

First, an edge is defined that will serve as the basis for the composition. This will affect soil thickness, height and number of plants. The height of the drainage layer and soil is ¼ of the entire container, it is important that it be below the opening of the vessel.

Step by step guide:

  • The drainage layer of expanded clay and pebbles is covered with 1 mm of activated carbon, which plays the role of an antiseptic.
  • The scoop distributes the soil for the composition, after which it is lightly compacted.
  • Plants, in our case this is a set of succulents - cereus, antimime, young and stonecrop Morgan, are planted with an interval of 2-4 cm. Sphagnum moss complements the composition.
  • Pebbles and decorative sand complete the design of the composition.

Watering plants is carried out with a minimum interval of 30 days, if necessary, the leaves are wiped with a sponge or sprayed from a spray bottle. Over time, overgrown succulents need to be transplanted.

Depending on the plants chosen for the composition, the design and care of the florarium differs in complexity. But in any case, this is an interesting activity that can captivate all family members. Florarium has a beneficial effect on the emotional state of those present in the room.

Coriander is one of the most popular spices in the world, and its greens are called cilantro or cilantro. Interestingly, cilantro leaves no one indifferent. Some people adore it and are happy to use it in any salads and sandwiches, and they love Borodino bread for the special flavor of coriander seeds. Others, referring to the smell that evokes associations with forest bugs, hate coriander and flatly refuse to approach bunches of cilantro even in the market, let alone plant it in their garden.

Watermelon and summer are inseparable concepts. However, not in every area you will find melons. And all because this African plant takes up a lot of space, is quite demanding on both heat and the sun, and also on competent watering. But still, watermelon is so loved that today not only southerners, but much more northern summer residents have learned to grow it. It turns out that you can find an approach to such a capricious plant, and if you want, you can get a decent harvest.

You can cook red gooseberry jam in 10 minutes. However, it should be borne in mind that this is the time required for cooking jam without preparing berries. It takes a lot of time to harvest and prepare berries for processing. Cruel thorns discourage any desire to harvest, but you still have to cut off your noses and tails. But the result is worth it, the jam turns out to be excellent, one of the most fragrant, in my opinion, and the taste is such that it is impossible to tear yourself away from the jar.

Monsters, anthuriums, caladiums, dieffenbachia ... Representatives of the Aroid family are considered one of the most popular categories of indoor plants. And not the last factor of their wide distribution is diversity. Aroids are represented by aquatic plants, epiphytes, semi-epiphytes, tuberous and vines. But despite such a diversity, because of which it is sometimes difficult to guess the relationship of plants, aroids are very similar to each other and require the same care.

Salad "Donskoy" for the winter - a savory appetizer of fresh vegetables in a sweet and sour marinade with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. In the original recipe, the vinegar is plain or apple, but with a combination of wine vinegar and light Balsamico, it turns out much tastier. You can also pasteurize blanks at a temperature of 85 degrees, then cool quickly.

Small varieties are planted with tweezers.

Leaves should not touch the walls of the vessel. Otherwise, over time, they will begin to rot or dry out. At first, you need to water more often so that they adapt and take root. When the microclimate is formed and the humidity is suitable, watering is reduced.

Growing indoor plants is a very exciting activity. But here, as in any business, it is important to constantly be interested in new trends and discover something special. In this article, we will talk about growing plants in an aquarium or florarium.

florarium- This is a glass, transparent vessel in which a composition is created from a variety of indoor plants.

Florariums can have the traditional look of a rounded fish tank, a multifaceted pyramid, a ball, a cube, or an elongated bottle. It all depends on your personal taste and imagination. Creating a florarium is a very creative activity that does not have strict rules. We ourselves select an attractive vessel, plants and create a flower arrangement.

On sale there are florariums that can be hung as pots for ampelous plants. By combining several of these original vessels into a group, we get a unique art object that will make our interior special. Aquariums and bottles in which houseplants grow are not only good for their beauty, but are also a favorable environment for growing some moisture-loving houseplants. In the conditions of a cramped, glass vessel, it is much easier to maintain a high level of humidity.

stand separately orchidariums - special vessels for growing capricious and demanding orchids. They are equipped with ventilation and drainage holes. Inside the orchidarium, the most favorable atmosphere is created for the full growth and development of orchids.

Florariums cannot serve as a permanent place for keeping plants. Flowers will grow, the soil will lose its properties, so this method of growing requires vigilance, control and constant renewal.

What plants are suitable for growing in a florarium or aquarium?

The volume of most florariums is not too large. So for them small plants preferredsucculents, cacti, bromeliads. Lighting remains an important factor in plant selection. If you plan to place a container with plants away from the light, inside the room, pick up small shade-tolerant plants, or consider placing the composition by the window or on the windowsill.

When gathering plants of different species together, it should be understood that their care needs should match.

For your first florarium, it is worth choosing the most unpretentious plants requiring infrequent watering.

In the florarium, you can grow ferns, violets, ivy. Falling vines are best planted in an open vessel, from which lashes will hang effectively.

It is important to understand that not all florarium vessels have drainage holes. And this means that the plants must be resistant to rot, and able to withstand a certain dry period.

Selected for the florarium plants should have a shallow, underdeveloped root system.

Planting plants in aquariums is still an underdeveloped area in Russia. And every amateur grower has the right to feel like a pioneer in this exciting business. Experiment with different plants, try to create unique compositions. Creating florariums can become a favorite hobby and even a business project.

We create a florarium with our own hands

Before creating your own florarium, find as many photos of finished compositions on the Internet as possible. This will inspire you, and a beautiful image of the future florarium will form in your imagination. Creative people can sketch a sketch to make the development plan as clear and detailed as possible.

What we need:

  1. Glass vessel. It can be an aquarium, a bottle, a large can, a beer mug. Anything! The shape of the vessel partly dictates the number of plants that the florarium can accommodate.
  2. Plants of your choice.
  3. Drainage.
  4. Substrate for succulents and cacti. Or general soil.
  5. Crushed charcoal.
  6. Decorative sand, stones, figurines.
  7. Auxiliary tools (Shovel, fork, spoon, knife).

The embodiment of the idea

    • First, rinse the glass vessel well and degrease it with alcohol from the inside.
    • As a rule, the vessels do not have drainage holes, which means that all excess water will accumulate in the substrate, provoking the reproduction of fungi, mold, and rot. To protect plants from these troubles, we line the bottom of the vessel with crushed charcoal.
    • We lay a dense drainage layer (5-7 cm).
    • We pour the substrate. To form a spectacular picture inside the vessel, the soil can be laid in layers, alternating with thin layers of colored pebbles or sand.
    • We take out the plants from the shipping pots and plant them in the substrate. It is important to put enough soil between the plants and compact it well so that they stand firmly. After watering, the soil settles, this point is also worth considering.
    • The surface of the substrate can be covered with pieces of moss, for decoration and maintaining a good level of moisture inside the soil.
    • After completing the planting, water the plants, clean the walls of the vessel from dust and dirt.
    • We decorate the composition, following the idea.

How to care for a florarium

If the florarium is inhabited by unpretentious plants, caring for it is extremely simple. It is only necessary to spray the leaves and water the substrate according to needs. If your florarium is closed, or the vessel has a very small neck, keep in mind that the moisture in it lasts longer. Ventilate the vessel from time to time to prevent mold.

All indoor plants in an aquarium or florarium will gradually grow and change. They will need to be inspected, replaced or cut off overgrown. It is important to identify and remove diseased plants in time to prevent infection of the rest.

A couple of times a year, you need to update the substrate in the florarium and carry out a “general cleaning” in it. This will keep the plants healthy and maintain the decorative effect of the garden under glass.

Do not be discouraged if your first florarium does not live very long. With experience, you will learn how to create very high quality compositions from the most suitable plants. Creating a florarium with your own hands will bring a lot of pleasure to both adults and children. And the result will please for a very long time!

Florarium will perfectly complement and enliven any modern interior.

More and more often, creative people make their own florarium as an original home decoration. Such a mini-garden in a bottle or jar allows you to create a piece of rainforest or desert in a city apartment. Purchased florariums are whole works of art and are very expensive, but you can make a unique decorative living object with your own hands, which is in no way inferior in beauty to its finished counterpart.

What is a terrarium in a jar and a florarium?

In general, a plant terrarium or florarium is an ordinary aquarium, only instead of water and fish there are plants in it. The progenitor of florariums can be called the English scientist Nathaniel Ward, who at the beginning of the 18th century placed tropical plants in a closed space (Ward's box), which created the most favorable conditions for them.

Florariums are a living miracle behind glass

Since then, they began to import plants unusual for cold climates to different countries of the world and grow them in specially equipped greenhouses, winter gardens or pavilions. At home, equipping a large greenhouse was not available to everyone, and therefore mini-gardens with plants became widespread. In florariums, mostly small plants or dwarf plants are grown for the home, otherwise you would have to change the filling of the glass garden too often. Thus, having properly arranged the microclimate inside it, a closed ecosystem is formed in a bottle and you create an almost eternal terrarium in a bottle with your own hands!

Floriana containers can be of completely different shapes and sizes.

Before you make a florarium with your own hands, it is worth evaluating the variety of existing models in order to choose the most suitable solution for the interior. All florariums can be divided into three groups:

  • Aquarium-type florariums, when compositions are created in real aquariums, are considered the most suitable for organizing an independent ecosystem, since they have a cover and backlight.

Advice! You should not choose a container for a florarium by beauty or size. Both in an aquarium and in glassware, you can create real masterpieces even in the smallest space. Miniature containers with 3-4 plants inside look very impressive.

Florariums can be located in different ways: they are mounted on walls, placed on a table or window sill, hung from the ceiling, etc.

Many florariums can decorate a home decorated in almost any style.

The filling of the florarium can also be completely different, but you need to choose for the joint cultivation of those representatives of the flora that require the same conditions. This allows you to create real natural areas in miniature in glassware: a mountain landscape, desert plants, tropics or a piece of dense forest.

Buy a florarium or make a florarium with succulents with your own hands?

If it is not possible to purchase a ready-made composition in a glass vase, it is quite possible to do it on your own. When creating a florarium, the following items and tools will come in handy:

  1. Glassware or aquarium.
  2. Drainage to the bottom (pebbles, broken bricks, coarse sand, etc.).
  3. Earth, sand or soil (depending on the plants used).
  4. Ordinary planting tools (if the capacity is large) or tweezers, as well as a blade attached to long sticks, a crochet hook and a spoon (when the florarium is made in a bottle).
  5. Water in a syringe or spray bottle for irrigation.
  6. Decorative ornaments (beautiful stones, colored sand, figurines of animals or fairy-tale characters).

A set of everything you need to create a florarium

Do-it-yourself terrarium or how to make a florarium in a jar (step by step instructions with a photo)

Florariums are easy to make with your own hands according to the following instructions:

  1. Initially, you need to prepare a glass container for the florarium. It is advisable to wash it well and degrease it with alcohol or vodka inside.
  2. Activated charcoal should be placed at the bottom of the container so that it is responsible for the absorption of harmful organic substances, the freshness of the soil and the prevention of mold and mildew. Instead of activated charcoal, you can use ordinary drainage for indoor plants, but in large quantities, since there are no holes in the jar or bottle through which moisture would escape.

    All the "ingredients" for the future masterpiece

  3. Soil is placed in the container, which should correspond to future green inhabitants: if a mini-desert is created, ordinary sand can be used; if you need space for the tropical jungle, it is better to purchase a ready-made substrate. You can find out about the needs of different plants in specialized stores where these plants are sold. For a decorative effect, layers of soil can be alternated with small layers of multi-colored sand.

    An important stage in the creation of a florarium is the right choice of soil

  4. Next, you can begin to populate the plants in the container. To do this, they are removed from the bowls, they try to clean the roots to the maximum and root them in the prepared soil. If moss is chosen for the florarium, it is worth putting a special substrate for mosses on top of the general substrate, as they love acidic soil. If you don't know how to grow moss in a jar, you can always use decorative pieces.
  5. After planting and watering, as well as cleanliness on the walls of the florarium, you can start decorating. It all depends on the creator's imagination: someone strews the entire surface of the earth with decorative pebbles, makes a miniature bench or a windmill, and someone appreciates minimalism, practically without using decorative techniques.

    You can decorate a terrarium for cacti with everything that your fantasy suggests.

Advice! There are several options for organizing space inside the florarium. Some phytodesigners advise planting all the flowers in a bottle with your own hands on the same level so that they receive the same amount of light, heat, water, etc. However, in such a small space, all the components necessary for development will somehow be received by all plants, and therefore it is better to think about the decorative component.

If the florarium will stand in the center of the room, it is desirable that the composition is even, and a beautiful view opens up from all sides. If the florarium is leaning against a wall or window, you can make several levels: those plants that are further away are placed a little higher.

Several florariums with different plants look very impressive

Plants for the garden in a bottle: how to choose the right one?

When choosing plants for the florarium, you need to consider how they get along with each other. It is advisable to choose such options in which a certain natural area is recreated behind glass:

  • To create a desert with your own hands, all kinds of succulents (cacti, aloe, spurge, crassula, etc.) are suitable. By the way, a florarium with cacti is practically the easiest and most classic option.

Thanks to the variety of succulents, you can create your own unique piece of the desert.

  • Ferns and moss can give the effect of a dense forest.

A wonderful florarium with moss and decorative figurines will be an excellent New Year's decor

  • You can arrange your own tropics using orchids, dieffenbachia, bromeliads, alocasias, etc. (by the way, using flowers for the florarium, the main thing is not to overdo it: 1-2 flowering plants are enough). It is the do-it-yourself florarium with orchids that has recently been at the peak of popularity among flower growers. Tradescantia is also often found in a bottle.

  • The mountain landscape will be recreated by succulents with various ivy.

Advice! If the plants are still selected for beauty, and not for the same needs, you can apply the following trick: plant them in different pots or containers and cover the surface with stones. It will be possible to take care of each of them individually, and from the side it will seem that the whole composition is in the same soil.

Care Tips

Caring for the florarium will not cause problems even for beginner gardeners:

  • regular spraying of leaves with clean water;
  • watering plants depending on their needs;

Regular watering is extremely important for the inhabitants of the florarium.

Advice! When creating a closed florarium, watering is carried out very rarely. It is only important to ventilate the vessels for the florarium in order to rid the container of condensate. It is also important to choose the right plants for a closed florarium, because. an airtight terrarium is not suitable for everyone.

  • pruning old branches;
  • keeping glass surfaces clean;
  • removal of diseased or overgrown flowers.

A glass container is a temporary shelter for plants. Succulents in a glass vase will someday need a bigger home

It is worth remembering that the florarium is not a decoration for life. No matter how slowly the plants grow, one day they will become cramped in the container. In this situation, they are transplanted into ordinary pots or greenhouses. In the empty glass container, you can again create new landscapes, a terrarium for flowers and other ideas, bringing to life the wildest dreams of a florist.

Many of us love indoor flowers and dream of placing them in the house so that they become a beautiful, unusual decor element that fits perfectly into the interior. But not every family has enough space in a house or apartment to afford a winter garden or even a green corner.

And here florariums come to the rescue - miniature gardens inside transparent containers. What is a florarium, what are its features and how to make such a living decoration with your own hands?

The history of the idea of growing cacti and orchids indoors

These dainty mini-gardens are far from a new invention. They have been a traditional decoration of secular salons and showcases of fashionable shops since the 18th century. It was then that Nathaniel Ward, a British naturalist explorer, guessed to place capricious tropical plants inside a container, where a favorable microclimate formed for them.

Ward's box - the first example of a florarium from the distant past

Today, florariums are back in fashion, they are in great demand among lovers of flowers and original design. In our latitudes, it is not easy to create suitable conditions for some plants. But you can easily put a miniature garden in a small dish on a table, shelf, bedside table anywhere in the room.

In fact, the florarium is the same aquarium, but instead of water and fish, it is filled with stones, sand and small plants or dwarf varieties. Due to the small size and closed or limited shape of the container inside such a mini-garden, the effect of a greenhouse is created: the plants are surrounded by warmth and high humidity.

In stores, you can find florariums of various types: from professional ones equipped with automatic watering, a hydrometer, lighting and heating, to simple and affordable gardens in aquariums or bottles. But if you want to make such a small miracle yourself, then first of all you need to learn about plants suitable for different types of florariums.

We compose a composition

Select representatives of the fauna for the mini-garden, following these principles:

  • plant height no more than 20 cm;
  • resistance to high humidity;
  • low growth rate.

For which plants is an airtight vessel suitable, and for which an open vessel

Often the question arises as to whether to choose an open or sealed (closed) container for certain types of plants. The first and second options have their pros and cons.

Plants will thrive in the right container.

Table: pros and cons of open and closed containers

As part of the compositions in the florarium, a variety of plants are used:

  1. Fern, dieffenbachia, cereal calamus, fittonia, selaninella, mosses of various species have received the greatest distribution among florarium lovers. With the help of these plants, you can give the florarium the appearance of a coniferous, deciduous or tropical forest.
  2. You can give the florarium a bright look with the help of flowering plants - violets, cyclamens, azaleas and others. But do not forget that they are very susceptible to decay. Either choose types of flowers that are resistant to moisture, or use larger containers and ensure that the florarium is well ventilated.
  3. The florariums with cacti planted in them are very beautiful. For such a product, an open-type tank with constant access to fresh air and zero chance of condensation is required. Or pick up cacti native to the rainforest.
  4. The orchids enclosed in the space of the florarium are simply magnificent. But do not forget about how capricious these flowers are. Firstly, in order to build such a florarium (they are called orchidariums), you need to try very hard, and you can’t do without skill. And secondly, you will have to provide heating, lighting, watering with the help of special equipment.

One of the features of plants for florariums is a low growth rate. After all, we are dealing with a very limited space, and if the plant grows rapidly in size, then we will have to regularly update the entire composition. In conditions of small space and a small layer of soil, plants usually slow down the growth process themselves. But for safety net, you can cut the roots a little when planting.

  • sphagnum moss;
  • ferns - nephrolepis, pteris, multi-row, asplenium, maidenhair;
  • orchids;
  • Saintpaulias (violets);
  • cyclamens;
  • gusmania;
  • azalea;
  • fittonia;
  • crotons;
  • alocasia;
  • begonia;
  • cryptanus;
  • crassula - "money tree", echeveria, young;
  • cacti and succulents - notocactus, echinopsis, rebutia, ripsalis, prickly pear.

List of suitable containers and materials for decoration

Florarium can be arranged in almost any transparent vessel. It could be:

  • small round aquarium
  • a bottle with a narrow neck;
  • clear glass vase;
  • bank of any size;
  • laboratory flask;
  • wineglass;
  • bulb.

In addition, in a special store you can buy ready-made vessels of any geometric shape.

To create a florarium, any transparent glassware is suitable.

Florariums in bottles and very miniature compositions in light bulbs are very popular. They look beautiful, original, do not take up much space. But their independent production is rather complicated: it is difficult to pour soil through a narrow neck, push plants through, arrange all the elements in the right order. Therefore, if you are just learning the art of creating a florarium, start with an aquarium, a large wine glass or a jar.

Preparation and some more inspiration

Home-made florariums are good because the capacity for them can be any, and you can easily find it at home. Therefore, we offer you several options for making a small flower world, from the simplest to the most complex, requiring attention, patience and accuracy.

In the manufacture of a florarium, simple tools will help you:

  • the spoon;
  • tassel;
  • tube or stick;
  • tweezers.

Tools for working on the florarium: spoon, brush, tube, tweezers

It is important to know! To make your florarium not only look beautiful, but also become a comfortable home for the plants living in it, consider the following ratios regarding the height of the vessel: 1 part of drainage, 3 parts of soil and 1 part of the surface decorating material - small pebbles, coarse river sand, moss.

Photo gallery: surface design ideas

A minimum of plants, decoration - and you have in your hands a piece of semi-desert with a reminder of prehistoric oceans

Deciduous forest within the boundaries of the vessel

Minimalist style - stones and 1-2 plants

A combination of layers of soil and sand will help to achieve the effect of stepping

From moss alone, you can create the look of a forest corner

Use large, angular stones for decoration to create the effect of rocky mountains.

In an aquarium or a round vessel

The wide opening of the neck makes it easy to fill the container and place the elements in it. You can use not only a round aquarium, but also a large wine glass or such a cute and original hanging container in the form of a drop.

Instead of a regular aquarium, you can use such an original vessel

We will use it in the master class. You will need the following materials and tools:

  • a suitable glass container with a volume of 1.5–2 l;
  • plants, for example, 1 rock rose and 2-3 bushes of peperomia or saxifrage;
  • soil that matches plants;
  • drainage (sand, small pebbles, expanded clay, broken brick);
  • activated or charcoal;
  • plants;
  • decorative elements for decoration (figures, houses, branches, driftwood);
  • spatula or spoon, long tweezers, sprayer, watering can, scissors.

Prepare the vessel, soil, drainage materials, charcoal, selected plants, decor and the necessary tools

Before starting work, prepare the selected container. It must be thoroughly washed, treated with boiling water and degreased with alcohol.

Working process:

Caring for the florarium is simple: provide it with enough diffused sunlight without access to direct sunlight, water it as the soil dries.

In a big tall jar - for beginners

The larger the volume of the vessel and the wider its neck, the easier it is to create a florarium. You will need the following materials:

  • jar with a volume of 3 liters;
  • charcoal;
  • soil from 1 part of peat and 2 parts of leafy soil;
  • plants - asplenium or arachniodes, cryptanthus, ofiopogon, balsam;
  • gloves;
  • scoop;
  • watering can.

Prepare jar, plants, moss, soil and tools for work

Do not forget about the rules of hygiene and safety. Since you are working with soil and a glass vessel, wear gloves on your hands.

Working process:

Succulent semi-desert in a candy vase

Such a florarium with cacti and succulents is simple both in execution and care. But it is unusually beautiful due to the combination of several types of cacti (gymnocalycium, echinopsis, milkweed, prickly pear) and stone rose - a plant called young.

Florarium with a semi-desert landscape in a vase is very beautiful and unpretentious

If you have the opportunity to use painted cacti, be sure to do so to brighten up the composition.

For this florarium, pick up a few cacti and succulents

So, you will need:

  • plants;
  • a low cylindrical candy vase;
  • soil for cacti and succulents;
  • small pebbles or expanded clay for drainage and the top decorative layer.

Vase, plants, soil and expanded clay - everything you need for your semi-desert

Wash the vase in hot water, dry and degrease, and then proceed to the manufacture of the florarium.

Working process:

Cacti and succulents do not require frequent watering. On the contrary: the less water, the better they feel, and most importantly, they grow less, which is very important for the limited size of the florarium. Therefore, care for such a composition will be reduced to watering once every 1.5–2 months and removing dust from the surface.

geometric garden

Vessels of various complex geometric shapes are very fashionable now - from a simple pyramid to a pentakis dodecahedron. They have many faces, and not always symmetrical and the same in size, which is why the figure takes on a fantastic shape. You can create such a vessel yourself, but you cannot do without certain special skills and tools. Therefore, it is better to buy a finished product, and apply your imagination directly to the creation of a florarium in it.

Polygonal vessels are great for creating a florarium

You will need:

  • polygonal vessel;
  • succulents - young, cereus, stonecrop Morgan, antimime or others;
  • moss (sphagnum);
  • soil from leafy earth and river sand in equal proportions;
  • drainage (expanded clay or small pebbles);
  • decorative sand, pebbles, figurines.

Prepare the vessel, plants, moss, soil and tools

When choosing a container, decide immediately on which edge it will stand. The thickness of the soil layer and the number of plants that fit in the florarium depend on this. The base of the composition - drainage and soil - should be no more than 1/4 of the entire vessel, and most importantly - its level should be below the hole in the tank.

Working process:

Water the soil no more than once a month and, if necessary, wipe the leaves with a damp sponge from dust or spray from a spray bottle. As the succulents grow, they will need to be seated.

Microworld in a light bulb

This option is perhaps the most difficult. Before you start arranging the interior space, you need to carefully prepare the vessel. And since this is a light bulb, some skills are needed, in particular, disassembling the base.

Florariums in a light bulb are usually made closed. Thus, a self-sufficient microclimate is created inside the container, ideal for any plants used.

Florariums in a light bulb - jewelry work

Prepare, in addition to the bulb itself, the following tools:

  • pliers;
  • scissors;
  • tweezers;
  • screwdriver;
  • protective glasses.

For work you will need pliers, scissors, tweezers, a screwdriver and glasses

And for the "stuffing" take:

  • sand;
  • any succulent plant - gasteria, aloe.

For safety reasons, be sure to wear safety glasses and proceed to disassemble the base.

Working process:

  1. Take the light bulb in your left hand and gently crumble the bottom of the base with pliers. It will easily give in, because it is made of fragile material.

    Crumble the bottom of the plinth with pliers

  2. Using a screwdriver, dismantle the coil inside the light bulb.

    Remove the spiral with a screwdriver

  3. Remove all internal fragments with tweezers.

    Remove the rest of the parts from the light bulb

  4. The light bulb is completely ready to place the contents in it.

    Light bulb ready for next steps

  5. Before you start creating the landscape, make a small stand so that the light bulb is stable. It can even be droplets of silicone glue.

    Attach something to the light bulb as a stand to ensure stability

  6. You can buy sand or collect it from the street. In any case, you need to rinse it well in running water. Do this until the water is completely clear.

    If you pick up sand on the street, be sure to rinse it

  7. Now pour the sand into a baking sheet and bake in the oven. This is a must, so you will destroy harmful microorganisms and mold spores.

    Bake the sand to kill mold and micro-organisms

  8. Gently pour some sand (a layer of about 1-1.5 cm) inside the light bulb. To make it easier, use a funnel or a piece of paper folded in half.

    Pour some sand into the light bulb

  9. Place the moss on the sand with tweezers, position it correctly with a thin stick. Moss can be collected in your country house or you can buy a package of a dry plant in a flower shop. He does not need special care and watering.

    Lay moss on the sand

  10. Very gently push the succulent inside the light bulb, be sure to root first so as not to damage the dense leaves. Move the bush with a thin stick and press the roots into the sand.

    Insert the plant with tweezers and deepen its roots into the sand

So the small florarium in the light bulb is ready. You can optionally add some other decorative element, for example, a figurine.

Such a florarium requires almost no care, since the shape of the light bulb ensures the circulation of the necessary amount of air and moisture for the plant. The condensation generated is enough to keep the humidity at the right level so that you do not have to water the plant. All that is needed is to wipe the light bulb from dust from time to time.

As you can see, even such a scrupulous, almost jewelry work can be on the shoulder!

We create the world with our own hands

How to make a garden in a bottle This question opens the way for you to one of the exciting activities. To create a flowering masterpiece in specialized stores, you need to buy:

  • glass container;
  • drainage, a couple of sheets of cardboard;
  • packaging of activated carbon tablets;
  • priming;
  • plants;
  • decor items.

The more unusual the vessel, the better.

One of the key points is the choice of capacity. It can be an unusually shaped bottle with a wide neck and a tight-fitting lid. You can choose a tall voluminous glass, a decanter, a vase, a jar, and even an old aquarium - any transparent glass container is suitable.

We give the aquarium a second life

Drainage, in addition to its direct purpose in the bottle garden, carries a large decorative load. It should be chosen taking into account the overall design idea and aesthetics. Coarse sand looks good, shell rock looks original, you can use expanded clay or brightly colored decorative stones.

Soil for flowers should be bought in a minimum amount. The container is only a quarter full. Activated charcoal is a good antiseptic, it is useful for compositions planted in a closed vessel.

When choosing decor items, we are limited only by our own imagination. Most often, stones, shells, sand, branches, moss, decorative figures of people and animals are used.

Special attention - "planting material"

Plants for the garden in a bottle are selected according to the following parameters:

  • small root system (space in a confined space is limited);
  • minimum dimensions;
  • love for high humidity;
  • unpretentious.

It is better to give preference to decorative leaves. Flowering plants require the removal of wilted flowers and fallen leaves, which is quite difficult to do through the narrow neck of the bottle.

We think over the composition for a mini-garden

The most impressive in glass containers looks Variegata, calamus cereal. Its height is 25 cm, it grows slowly, tolerates the lack of moisture perfectly. Its creamy green leaves will brighten up any mini landscape.

Look good in glass varieties of royal begonias with small leaves. Plant height 15 cm, it is placed, as a rule, in the center of the composition.

An ideal plant for mini-greenhouses is graceful hamedorea. This beautiful, slow growing palm tree with graceful leaves and slender stems will brighten up any garden.

For small containers, bromeliad cryptanthus is ideal. Its height is only 8 cm, while it has beautiful rosettes of leaves, green with small white patches at the bottom.

Often, a low, slender Sander dracaena is used for a garden in a bottle. Its unusual narrow leaves with large white spots immediately attract attention.

Different varieties of fern look good in undersized compositions. Especially popular are pteris xiphoid Victoria, maidenhair Ruddy, round-leaved pellet, and fine-haired maidenhair. Their beautiful greenery is ideal for creating "out of this world" landscapes.

Fittonia Verschaffelt is another plant that loves moist air and feels great in a closed glass vessel. She has unusual leaves: olive green with red veins. Her "friend" silver-veined Fittonia has white streaks on bright green leaves. Both beauties are very miniature: the height is only 7.5 cm.

Capricious arrowroot in a mini-greenhouse feels great. Its creeping stems and black-spotted green leaves look great behind glass.

You can use Spetchley ivy, Little Diamond or Tre Coupe. Its tiny leaves are very decorative in the vertical gardening of a mini-garden.

Pellionia beautiful is also often found in florariums. Its creeping reddish stems, combined with beautiful dark green leaves, look very unusual.

Pilea Kadie has a dwarf variety - Nana. It is valued for its unusual silvery specks on green leaves.

For a decorative soil cover, you can plant Salaginella Krausa. Its small leaves resemble moss from afar. Against its background, the whole composition looks exceptional.

Other plants can also be used. The choice depends on the overall design idea. However, it should be remembered that only undersized varieties are suitable for growing in a limited space of a glass vessel, the height of plants should not exceed 20 cm. In addition, the “pets” you have chosen should love a humid “climate”.

Mini greenhouse tool

To make a garden in a bottle with your own hands, you can’t do without an improvised tool. After all, all the work will have to be done through a fairly narrow neck of the bottle. We will need:

  • a teaspoon fixed on a long handle will act as a scoop;
  • a sharp blade fixed on a handle of a suitable size - the plants will need to be cut;
  • "press" for compacting the earth - an empty spool of thread, mounted on a convenient handle;
  • two long sticks - for picking up, transferring, planting plants;
  • a sponge for wiping the vessel from the inside;
  • small sprayer.

Technology for creating a florarium

We take a glass vessel. The more original it is, the more attractive the composition will turn out.

Pour drainage at the bottom. If an uneven “relief” is conceived, then a mouthpiece from a thick sheet of paper should be placed in the neck of the bottle, with the narrow end inward. With it, you can easily form hills and even real hills.

Now we pour a thin layer of charcoal or lay out activated charcoal tablets, this will protect our mini garden in a bottle from pathogenic bacteria, mold and waterlogging.

Now add a layer of fertile soil. To be sure that the plants receive all the necessary nutrients, the soil should be bought ready-made in specialized stores, based on what flowers you will plant. Soil volume - directly depends on how deeply the plants you have chosen are rooted. In any case, drainage, coal and earth should not occupy more than ¼ of the vessel. We level the layer, slightly “tamp down” using the “press” - an empty spool of thread on a long handle. You need to work as carefully as possible so that the walls of the container remain clean. If it doesn’t work, wet the sponge, attach it to a comfortable handle and wipe the glass thoroughly. Its purity is the key to good plant growth. And the beauty of the composition, of course.

We proceed to the most important thing - we plant flowers and place decor elements. For planting, we use an ordinary fork and spoon. We make indentations with a spoon, transfer the plants with a fork and bury the roots. Don't be discouraged if you don't succeed on the first try. A little patience - and you will succeed. Little secret. If the roots of the "seedlings" are too powerful, they should be ruthlessly cut off. This will stop the growth of plants, and also allow them to be planted with minimal losses. "Landing" and the soil is wetted from the spray gun. We make sure that the spray is microscopic, in no case do we use jet irrigation.

We wipe the walls of the container with a sponge, close it tightly with a lid.

Most often, the florarium compositions are made up of 1-3 plants. If you want to plant more, take a larger vessel. For example, an old aquarium. See what the garden in a bottle looks like in the photo below.

Caring for a mini-garden in a test tube

Flowers in a bottle garden do not require special care. Abundant condensate sometimes appears on the walls of the vessel. This is fine. Be sure to open the lid and dry. Strongly overgrown plants need to be cut from time to time so that the composition does not lose its aesthetic appearance. Due to the fact that a special ecosystem is formed behind the glass, watering should be kept to a minimum. In most cases, the moisture that the leaves evaporate is enough for plants.

Plants need light to grow and develop properly. If the florarium is located in a poorly lit place, additional light sources should be considered. The best solution is a fluorescent lamp. It does not give much heat, which means it will not dry out the garden "residents".

A garden in a bottle is a great alternative to growing houseplants on a windowsill. It is beautiful and unusual, besides, thanks to the closed ecosystem, it calmly “endures” the long absence of its owner.

Florarium or plant terrarium is a small home greenhouse, a transparent container made of glass or plastic, inside which plants grow. Dry air in the winter season, lack of lighting, cold on the windowsill from window glass and lack of time for regular care often put an end to the dream of having your own tropical garden with moisture-loving and heat-loving species. It is the florarium that is the ideal solution for those who love exotic plants, but the climatic conditions of an ordinary city apartment do not favor their breeding.

What is a florarium

As a rule, the florarium is made of glass or dense translucent plastic, there are also completely wooden models or combined ones, with transparent inserts. Unlike a terrarium, a florarium necessarily has a narrowed inlet at the top or side to ensure a microclimate inside the container. Often this hole is completely covered by a lid. Special containers for growing plants are used, as well as all kinds of glass bottles, jars with lids, large bottles of wine, bowls with a narrowed hole, laboratory flasks.

The main purpose of the florarium is to maintain a more or less stable level of humidity and temperature, as in a greenhouse. Special equipment for heating and lighting can make the florarium independent of the source of natural light and heat. All this allows you to grow the most whimsical plants in a container that require certain conditions and care. if the florarium is completely closed, it is necessary to ventilate it regularly so that condensation does not accumulate on the walls.

For plant terrariums, rectangular aquariums, terrariums for turtles, snakes and other animals, round large vases, bowls, even ordinary glass cups or glasses are used. This option is also called a showcase florarium. Access to plants here is open from above, which means that it is necessary to strictly observe the temperature regime, regularly water and spray, and avoid drafts if the plants need it.

Another important advantage of florariums is their compactness, which is especially important for owners of small apartments and small window sills, where there is not enough space for large flowerpots. A variety of plant compositions in the terrarium look very stylish and extraordinary, especially in comparison with standard pots with houseplants.

It is worth remembering that no matter how slowly the plants grow, sooner or later they will become crowded in a small container. Then the flowers can be transplanted into pots, and the florarium can be filled with a new composition.

Variants of florariums

  • glass jars, vases and glasses of various shapes and configurations

Any bank can become a "home" for green tenants

  • bottle version, the most difficult to manufacture, since it is difficult to plant plants and care for them through a narrow neck

Advice! You should not choose a container for a florarium by beauty or size. Both in an aquarium and in glassware, you can create real masterpieces even in the smallest space. Moreover, miniature containers with 3-4 plants inside look the most unusual.

Florariums can be located in different ways: they are mounted on walls, placed on a table or window sill, hung from the ceiling, etc.

The filling of the florarium can also be completely different, but you need to choose for the joint cultivation of those representatives of the flora that require the same conditions. This allows you to create real natural areas in miniature in glassware: a mountain landscape, desert plants, tropics or a piece of dense forest.

Creation of a florarium

When creating a florarium, the following items and tools will come in handy:

  1. glassware or aquarium,
  2. drainage to the bottom (pebbles, broken bricks, coarse sand, etc.),
  3. earth, sand or soil (depending on the plants used),
  4. ordinary planting tools (if the container is large) or tweezers, as well as a blade, a crochet hook and a spoon attached to long sticks (when the florarium is made in a bottle),
  5. water in a syringe or spray bottle for irrigation,
  6. decorative ornaments (beautiful stones, colored sand, figurines of animals or fairy-tale characters).

Florariums are easy to make with your own hands according to the following instructions:

  • Initially, you need to prepare a glass container for the florarium. It is advisable to wash it well and degrease it with alcohol or vodka inside.
  • Activated charcoal should be placed at the bottom of the container so that it is responsible for the absorption of harmful organic substances, the freshness of the soil and the prevention of mold and mildew. Instead of activated charcoal, you can use ordinary drainage for indoor plants, but in large quantities, since there are no holes in the jar or bottle through which moisture would escape.
  • Soil is placed in the container, which should correspond to future green inhabitants: if a mini-desert is created, ordinary sand can be used; if you need space for the tropical jungle, it is better to purchase a ready-made substrate. You can find out about the needs of different plants in specialized stores where these plants are sold. For a decorative effect, layers of soil can be alternated with small layers of multi-colored sand.
  • Next, you can proceed to the "settlement" of plants in a container. To do this, they are removed from the bowls, they try to clean the roots to the maximum and root them in the prepared soil. If moss is chosen for the florarium, it is worth putting a special substrate for mosses on top of the general substrate, as they love acidic soil.
  • After planting and watering, as well as cleanliness on the walls of the florarium, you can start decorating. It all depends on the creator's imagination: someone strews the entire surface of the earth with decorative pebbles, makes a miniature bench or a windmill, and someone appreciates minimalism, practically without using decorative techniques.

Advice! There are several options for how best to organize the space inside the florarium. Some phytodesigners advise planting all flowers at the same level so that they receive the same amount of light, heat, water, etc. However, in such a small space, all the components necessary for development will still be received by all plants, and therefore it is better to think about the decorative component.

If the florarium will stand in the center of the room, it is desirable that the composition is even, and a beautiful view opens up from all sides. If the florarium is leaning against a wall or window, you can make several levels: those plants that are further away are placed a little higher.
