How to visually enlarge a room: tricky design tricks to visually expand the space How to visually enlarge the space in a small room To visually expand the space

For many residents of the former USSR, the issue of at least a visual increase in living space is very acute, because after the era of communism, we inherited a lot of houses with standard small-sized apartments. To visually enlarge the space and create the illusion of spaciousness, simple tricks that are accessible to everyone will help.

Enlarge space with mirrors

A mirror placed close to the floor will help add volume to the room, an interesting effect can be achieved if you use mirrors instead of a curb. Perfectly able to cope with the increase in space and a mirrored ceiling. And today it is not necessary to use a mirror for this. Stretch ceilings can create the desired effect. In order to expand the space, they can occupy both almost the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe ceiling, and only a small part of it.

Wallpaper - is it possible to visually enlarge the room

The most commonly used finishing material for residential premises is wallpaper. In interior design, they play an important role. This or that pattern of wallpaper can significantly change the look of the room, including visually reduce or expand the space of the room.

To make the room seem larger, it is recommended to choose wallpaper in light colors. If there is a drawing on them, it should be borne in mind that large images significantly narrow the space. For small rooms, a small or small ornament is more suitable, it visually removes the surface, as a result, the room seems larger. A good effect can be achieved by combining wallpaper.

To begin with, let's figure out how a drawing can change the optics of space.

Large drawing(image 1) brings the surfaces closer, and, consequently, visually reduces the room, if it is located only on the back wall - the room is shortened.

fine drawing(image 2), especially in light colors, it seems to push the space apart, thanks to which it enlarges the room.

transverse stripes(image 3) pushing the walls apart, as a result the room seems to be lower. If they are located only on the back wall, the room is shortened.

vertical stripes(picture 4) lengthen the wall, thanks to this the room seems higher, and the wider the stripes are, the more noticeable the effect will be.

Cross stripes on the floor(image 5) visually the room is made shorter and wider.

Longitudinal stripes on the floor(image 6) lengthen the room, and the more pronounced their color and the wider they are, the stronger the effect.

Ways to expand space with wallpaper:

  • To level a long and narrow room, you can use wallpaper that has a horizontal pattern, or bring the far wall closer with wallpaper in a warm dark shade.
  • Wallpaper with vertical stripes visually increase the height, but reduce the volume of the room. To avoid this effect, the walls can be decorated with contrasting narrow stripes.
  • Wide and overly bright stripes will make the room look "squat", so try to use discreet colors. Bright drawings are recommended to be included only in places, for example, to highlight zones.
  • To enlarge the room with wallpaper, you can decorate smaller walls with a large pattern, and large ones with a small one. Large patterns are also well suited for zoning a room, highlighting any part of it.
  • Wallpaper without a pattern (monochrome) or with a barely noticeable image creates a depth of perception, thanks to which it well emphasizes interior items. Such wallpapers (but only in light colors) will not only increase the space, but also create an ideal basis for further decorating the walls with photographs, paintings, etc.
  • To enlarge small rooms with low ceilings and poor lighting, you can decorate their lower part with darker tones, the upper one with light ones, and make a horizontal strip at the junction.
  • To make the ceiling seem higher, glue the wallpaper only close to it. Wide borders on the walls, having the color of the ceiling, make the room lower, so it is better to refuse them. Only very thin borders are allowed.
  • You can visually distance the ceiling by adding length to the walls. In this case, they should "go" a little to the ceiling. Just paste the wallpaper starting from the ceiling, or paint the ceiling near the walls the same color as the walls. As a result, a strip with the same color, texture and pattern as the walls should form along the perimeter of the ceiling. The size of such a strip should not exceed thirty centimeters; for small rooms, five centimeters will be enough.
  • You can raise the ceiling with the help of photo wallpapers. If you decorate one of the walls with such wallpaper, the area of \u200b\u200bthe room will visually increase. But remember, murals that increase space should only be with a perspective pattern, that is, they should not depict, for example, a brick wall, but a water surface, a field, a road stretching into the distance, mountain peaks, etc.

Expanding space with color

Scientists have long proven that color can affect a person in the most amazing way. Some shades soothe and give peace of mind, others, on the contrary, irritate or even make a person aggressive, others increase appetite, etc. Color can also affect the visual perception of space.

Consider how paints can optically change space:

dark floor(image 1) in combination with light walls and ceiling, pushes the room up and to the sides. The room will seem especially large if the walls and ceiling are the same.

Darkened floor and ceiling(image 2) will make the room wider and lower, its area will be perceived as larger than in reality.

Darkened back wall and floor(image 3), in this case, the floor will be emphasized even more, this will push the room apart.

Darkened back wall and ceiling(image 4) will make the room visually shorter, but at the same time expand to the sides.

Darkened walls and floor(image 5). In this version, the floor connects the walls and seems to pull them together, because of this, the room becomes smaller and lengthens.

Darkened back wall(image 6) deepens the room and is also a good backdrop for furniture and interior items that need to be highlighted.

Darkened side walls(image 7) make the room narrower, it moves apart towards the back wall, floor and ceiling.

Darkened rear and side walls(image 8) expand the room up and down, but at the same time make it closed.

Darkened side walls and ceiling(image 9) the room expands towards the back wall, it seems narrower and longer. At the same time, the light floor does not give a feeling of reliable support.

Colored back and side walls(image 10) make the room closed, but at the same time it seems higher.

Neutral floor and colored other surfaces(image 11) make the room cramped and look like a cave.

Colored all surfaces(image 12) greatly narrow the room, make it gloomy.

Consider a few designer tips on how to visually enlarge a room with color:

  • It is best to expand the space with light pastel colors.
  • Making the room bigger will help the design of the ceiling and walls in one color. Also, the top can be made the same as the walls, but only a couple of tones lighter.
  • If the style of the room allows, you can visually raise the ceiling, and therefore increase the space, using the beams located on it. At the same time, it is recommended to make them white, and the ceiling itself smoky, slightly darkened.
  • If you want to increase the space with color, and significantly - use blue tones, but keep in mind that such shades do not have a long stay in the room. An alternative to blue can be any light cold colors.
  • On the farthest wall of the room, place some bright decor item, so you can create a perspective effect and the room will be perceived as spacious.
  • Try to paint low ceilings only in light colors, white is best.
  • In order to lengthen the room, decorate the opposite wall with a lighter cold shade.
  • To increase the space, you can use the following technique - make the floor and decorative elements in the same color, and decorate the walls in a calmer tone.
  • Try to choose the overall furniture that you plan to put along the walls in a color close to the walls, so the room will visually smooth out.
  • You can move the walls apart if you paint the shelves to match them and choose the same color curtains. All these elements will merge and create more air space.

If you are a creative person, then pink or purple. Think about the overall picture of your room. Do not forget the colors that expand the space - beige, cream, pood shades.

Think about your interests. Some examples are: music, art, movies, animals, etc. Write this list. This will come in handy for choosing the design of your room. How to visually expand a narrow room - stop at light colors!

Start by moving furniture. Find new good positions and make sure all your favorite furniture will fit. Move only empty tables and drawers, and temporarily transfer things to the bed. Give away or throw out all unnecessary things to clear the space and free up drawers.

Color scheme for expanding the room

Who wouldn't want a big house with spacious rooms? But often a person cannot afford such a pleasure as buying a large living space, so you have to huddle in small rooms.

But if you look at the situation from a different angle, then you can understand that in fact everything is not so bad, and a small room has its advantages. Firstly, they are easier to clean, secondly, they are cheaper in terms of heating, and thirdly, if you correctly approach the design of the room, then you can create a truly cozy and visually large room.

To create a visual space, you can use a simple "optical trick", the possibilities of optical illusions. In order to recreate the visual space, you will need:

  • Wallpaper in light, cold or pastel colors.
    Wallpaper.
    Mirrors and lamps.
    Curtains and furniture.

What wallpaper expands the room

For a small room, it is worth giving preference to light colors, it is also strongly recommended to “play” on contrasts. For example, if the room is more elongated and narrow, this option is perfect, how to make long walls in light colors to remove them from each other and expand the space visually.

And those that are smaller, on the contrary, darken in order to bring them closer to each other. Or make a contrast - stick wallpaper with small patterns on one wall, and large ones on the opposite wall. A small pattern on the wallpaper makes the room visually larger.

What wallpaper expands a room with low ceilings? Can be wallpapered with vertical lines. This technique will visually make the ceiling higher. Or paint the ceiling a couple of tones lighter. If you complete the entire room in uniformly light colors, a peculiar, airy atmosphere will be created in it.

Wall mural

Wall murals with a view of a receding forest path, the sea with small boats in the distance, a mountain landscape, etc. will perfectly fit into the interior of a small room. In general, everything that depicts the perspective.
Also, a chic solution would be to choose a photo wallpaper with an enlarged image of something, for example, a shell, some kind of plant, a bird, and so on. The main thing is that the murals should be pasted on a wall that is not crowded with furniture, especially tall ones, because this will spoil the whole effect.

Furniture

It is advisable to install furniture that is multifunctional, light, using colors to expand the space. An excellent choice would be a folding sofa, in which you can fold the bed for a day, and collect it so that it does not take up space. Shelves on the walls can be painted to match the walls themselves. It is strongly recommended that you put things in a closet whenever possible so that they do not clutter up the room.

Curtains

How to visually expand a narrow room? Curtains, as well as wallpaper, you need to choose light, with small patterns. An excellent option would be to choose longer, slightly lying on the floor curtains. This length will visually make the room taller. You can not use huge curtains, large and heavy curtains, a huge amount of ruffles and bows, because. they create the visual feeling of a small space.

Cleaning.

It may sound boring, but it can actually be fun if you imagine what your room will look like later. Remove dust, dirt, cobwebs ... Do everything you can.

Put all your books on the bookshelves. How about a soft toy on the next shelf or on the bed? Organize the room as you wish.

And finally, in the final part, accessories! Create your stylish interior in 2017.

How to increase the space of a room? We often ask ourselves this question.

The apartment is small, but I really want it to seem bigger. Today I offer the secrets of designers to visually expand the space.

Light color enhances space

How to increase the space with light wallpaper?

As in a small room, a light tone should prevail in a small apartment. Everything in a light color seems more voluminous than a dark color.

We have 6 planes:

  • four walls;
  • ceiling.

If all these planes are made in a light tone, then the room will visually appear wider.

What will reduce the space?

It is better not to use the contrast of colors in a small room, for example, dark parquet, laminate with light wallpaper will visually reduce the space.

Colored wallpaper with a sweeping pattern is not suitable for small spaces. It is better to choose plain wallpaper with a textured canvas. If you still want a drawing, then choose a small floral ornament.

Gloss enhances space

The next secret to visually enlarge the room is gloss.

The ceiling is better to make glossy, not matte. If you choose stretch ceilings, it is better to buy with a gloss effect.

Due to the reflection of objects located on the floor, the ceiling will appear high, and this will visually increase the volume of the room.

Also, in a small bathtub, it is better to purchase glossy tiles, rather than matte ones, then the space will visually expand.

Remember in a small room are contraindicated:

  • decorative beams;
  • tiles on the ceiling;
  • two-level gypsum structures.

All these elements crush and reduce space.

How to increase space using the diagonal principle?

An even greater role in the visual enlargement of the room is played by the geometric solution of the floor.

Therefore, use a diagonal way of laying parquet, parquet boards or use a light-colored laminate.

Place an elongated object in the far corner diagonally across the room. For example, a flower, a lamp, an elegant elongated vase. The eye in the room will involuntarily focus on these objects and it will seem wider and larger than it really is.

What reduces space?

Longitudinal or transverse laying (parallel to long or short walls in the room) of the floor covering reduces the floor area. The same happens when the floor is laid out in squares, for example, tiles.

You should not lay linoleum with a large pattern yet.

With the help of furniture, you can increase the space or reduce it.

The dimensions of the furniture should also correspond to the dimensions of the apartment. Choose furniture with shiny, chrome, glass elements. While maintaining the functional load, they seem to visually dissolve in space and do not overload the room.

Opt out of:

  • bulky furniture, walls with many sections, massive wardrobes;
  • huge double beds with high headboards;
  • sofas with massive armrests.

Remember that massive bulky furniture clutters up the space.

Actively use mirrored surfaces, a mirrored wall or part - all this expands a narrow room.

But install mirrors so that large pieces of furniture, such as bookcases, wardrobes, chests of drawers, are not reflected.

The room will seem overloaded with interior items and will not only not acquire additional visual volume, but will also destroy the existing one.

How to increase the space with decoration?

Items for decorating an apartment must be chosen carefully, they must match the style of the apartment. In a small room, there should be no more than three of them.

A painting with an urban or natural landscape with a distinct spatial perspective is the best option for expanding space.

But small rooms do not like a cocktail of disparate items. No need to hang small pictures and photographs on the walls. They crush and steal space.

Textile decor is well suited to enlarge the room. Opt for transparent, translucent light shades and small decorative prints.

Heavier space:

  • heavy curtains made of thick fabrics on the windows;
  • voluminous bedspreads with a large print;
  • carpets with long pile.

How to increase space in a small apartment?

Conclusion: it turns out that it is easy to increase the space, put these methods into practice and your apartment will visually appear larger.

Best regards, Olga.

The designers of "Khrushchev" and standard concrete boxes least of all thought about the living space. It was important to accommodate a family of three in the notorious minimum footage. How to visually increase the space in a small room without a major overhaul is not an idle question. Changing the layout requires paperwork and significant investments. There are easier ways to visually add a few "squares" and transform a modest apartment.

The easiest and most affordable way to change the proportions of the room and shift the spatial accents is to update the color of the walls. An exciting activity is akin to a puzzle, the solution of which is comfortable living conditions with the feeling that there is a lot of air around. What should be the wallpaper for a small room:

  • Bright hues. Calm pastel colors create the illusion of an increase in area and volume, pushing the walls apart and raising the ceiling. It becomes not only lighter - warmth and peace come.
  • No large items. Large drawings hide space, attract too much attention. Large details contrast with the main background. The accented print "eats" the light background, it is lost and does not fulfill the main function. It is not excluded the introduction of tackiness and disharmony of the surrounding space into the interior.
  • Additional decorative elements. The once popular wallpaper is experiencing a real renaissance. With the right choice of plot, they can be transferred from Khrushchev to the Latin Quarter or straight to the shores of the azure sea. Filling with air and perspective are the main factors of choice.

In a small kitchen, light wallpaper with a small pattern looks good.

No less important in increasing the area and volume is given to the ceiling. Few apartments can boast that the height of the walls meets the expectations of the owners. It is recommended to avoid borders, moldings and other ceiling decorations. Calm plain wallpaper or paint is the best choice.

Do not clutter up the room with furniture, especially dark ones. A large number of items hides the place. It is advisable to free the center of the room and give preference to functional furniture. Transformers and shelves instead of bulky cabinets are ideal.

Transforming furniture in combination with a successful design forms a large volume

Be sure to pay attention to the windows. Lambrequins, lush curtains and meters of pleated tulle are not suitable for decorating an opening. The lighter and more concise the decor, the more air and light, which is important for a small room.

The best option for decorating windows is the use of blinds or roller blinds.

It is important to know! For a small room, a window design that matches the overall tone of the room is preferable. Roman blinds and light curtains to match the wallpaper are an excellent interior solution.

How to choose decor for a small room

Manufacturers offer an unlimited number of options for finishing apartments. In the construction supermarket, a slight panic covers - what to stop at. Wallpaper for a small room, which visually enlarges the space, narrows the options and at the same time allows fantasies to run wild.

Monochromatic wallpaper

The discreet decor is distinguished by conciseness, calmness, and the absence of contrasts that irritate the eyes. When designing, they are based on personal color preferences - warm or cold colors.

Warm ones include:

  • light green or light green;
  • yellow;
  • beige;
  • apricot;
  • cream.

Choose muted soft shades. They relax, soothe and perform the function assigned to them. The room fills with air.

Cold ones include:

  • light blue;
  • light gray;
  • light pink;
  • white.

What wallpaper color enhances a room the most? White is the most effective color for pushing the walls apart, but it is demanding to maintain cleanliness and formality. Delicate bluish or pinkish shades, as well as a calm gray-silver, are quite suitable for solving the problem.

An example of a successful design in cool colors

Wallpaper with prints and patterns

Monochromatic options attract with restraint and conciseness. Often you want more than looking at an undiluted wall every day. However, the choice of drawings and prints is approached carefully and the relevance in the interior is assessed.

An almost universal option is vertical striped wallpaper. Usually, in addition to solving the problem of a small area, you have to think about how to raise the ceiling. The vertical pattern easily pulls the walls up and at the same time does not hide the space.

Excessive contrasts should be avoided and related color combinations should be selected. Blue goes well with white, and light yellow or beige with apricot.

Another possible solution is light wallpaper with a small, unobtrusive pattern. Preference is given to plotless motifs - floral, abstract, without sharp geometric shapes.

Laconic horizontal stripes of warm shades expand the room, and open bookshelves bring airiness and lightness.

dark wallpaper

The decor in dark colors is practically a taboo if you need wallpaper that increases the space of the room: photos indicate the failure of such decisions. However, in some cases they are used for contrast, if necessary, to stretch the room or, on the contrary, to make it more square.

This technique is implemented as carefully as possible, only for one wall or even a section. They prefer gradient colors or wallpaper with prints and refuse monochromatic solutions.

Most often, the space is distributed in this way, the working or, conversely, the sleeping area is separated. To smooth out the effect of dimming and narrowing, additional lighting is installed.

Dark colors are best used in contrast with light wallpapers.

It is important to know! Dark colors negatively affect mood. A long stay in a dimly lit room is fraught with a general depressed state - a lack of light affects.

texture wallpaper

Texture gives volume and allows you to use effective design techniques. Textured brick-like wallpaper is a classic option that justifies itself in a small space.

Shades of white or light warm tones imitating brickwork contribute to solving the problem of visually increasing the area. Good for country style or kitchen design, where you want to feel rural comfort and relaxation, harmony, peace.

Textured wallpaper in a small room can be used in combination with solid colors for visual effects. For example, when including photo wallpapers or large paintings on the wall in the interior.

It is important to know! The color of the floor plays an important role in creating the effect of additional space. The colored floor works well - it makes the room taller and wider.

Textured design complements the life-affirming pattern on the back wall

Techniques for visual expansion of space

In addition to the area, the volume of the room is important. Filling with air enhances the feeling of spaciousness. The palm among the "expanders" of the boundaries belongs to the color of the walls and the presence of free space, not cluttered with bulky furniture. Additional factors are no less important than colors that increase the volume of the room:

  • Mirrors. The reflective abilities of a mirror surface work wonders - they expand the space many times over. A wardrobe with a mirrored door is appropriate in a small room, as is a wall mirror. The ideal location is opposite the window.
  • Using the perspective effect. Photowall-paper with a plot going to "infinity" will help well with this. Possible urban motifs, landscapes, pictures of the underwater world. Medieval streets and canals of Venice look great, lost in the distance.
  • Visual change in the depth and height of a small room. The use of various color combinations when decorating the ceiling, walls and floor allows you to achieve the desired effect. With low ceilings, the side and far walls are highlighted with color - this way the height and volume visually increase. The side walls are “pushed apart”, highlighting the far wall with color.
  • Natural and artificial lighting. The brighter the small room, the larger the volume seems. If the windows face the sunny side, there are practically no problems with illumination during the day. For the north side, a light color is required - otherwise you have to suffer from being squeezed in a “stone bag”. In the evening, it is necessary to provide sufficient artificial lighting and, in addition to the main source, provide additional lighting. Wall sconces, built-in ceiling "halogens" are suitable for this.

Mirrored surfaces lighten massive furniture - the wardrobe does not hang over the bed

Volumetric solutions are based on a light color palette and are enhanced by simple tricks. If you want more than a standard interior in soft neutral colors, you can resort to 3D design - an alternative to wallpaper that expands the space. A simple and win-win option is a stretch ceiling that imitates the sky. The decor is suitable for a child's room, adult bedroom or kitchen.

Juicy photo wallpapers expand the narrow kitchen and emphasize the style

It is important to know! Calm tones are especially important for a nursery. Children often fall asleep in the light, they should not be distracted by overly rich decor.

Perspective effect blurs boundaries in a small room

Large drawings and interior details: pros and cons

Does a large pattern on the wallpaper increase or decrease the area? In the building department of a supermarket, it is difficult to answer an important interior question. In a small bedroom or kitchen, large decorative elements hide space and reduce volume.

Large drawings or prints are colorful, often made in dark colors. The contrast narrows the spatial framework, there is a feeling that the image hangs and threatens to crush with its weight.

To revive a plain wall, a small decorative element is enough. The mission is perfectly fulfilled by a picture framed in a laconic frame, or a modular image on a light background.

When distributing free space, every detail of the interior is taken into account.

Large interior details also belong to the thieves of free space. Wallpaper that visually enlarges the space fails in competition with massive furniture and electronics. Therefore, the "plasma" is entered into the interior, and the rest of the audio-video equipment is placed in a pedestal or on shelves. It is preferable to choose devices in a light case - so they do not violate the overall style.

You will learn how to save space, visually expand the area, raise the ceilings and make a small room as light and bright as possible. 1. How to save space in a small room: smart furniture

When shopping for furniture for a small room, you can save a lot of space by opting for shallow cabinetry (especially for kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways), narrow armrests, and thin legs. The latter will help not only visually enlarge the room, but also simplify the cleaning process, while furniture without legs will look much more massive and accumulate dust under it.

  1. A sliding or folding table that can be expanded when guests visit. Just stock up on extra folding chairs that can be hidden against a wall or in a closet. Choose a table model with wheels to make it easier to move.
  2. A bar counter that can also act as a narrow dining table, kitchen island, window sill or even a partition between the kitchen and living room.
  3. Sofa with lifting mechanism and storage space. It is convenient to hide bed linen, bedspreads and various old things in it. Armrests can be equipped with additional shelves for decor and accessories.
  4. A folding wardrobe bed that solves the problem of decorating small one- or two-room apartments along with.
  5. Banquettes and ottomans with a hinged lid and a cavity inside.

Finally, built-in and corner furniture allow you to make the most of the available space. Corner hallways, a reading chair in the living room, a built-in wardrobe above the head of the bed and similar solutions will make the interior of the home more comfortable and interesting.

2. Optical illusion: transparent and mirror interior items

3. How to visually expand the room: horizontal lines

Choose wallpaper with horizontal lines or plank up the walls to make a narrow room look bigger. The striped path will play the same role in the hallway or corridor. In general, in small rooms it is better to refuse to use carpets, as they visually break up the space and make it narrower.

4. Enlarge space with lighting

Lighting up every dark corner and avoiding massive pendant lights is another way to make a small room look bigger. Use oversized ceiling lights, behind the sofa and chairs, sconces above the tables, built-in spotlights and led lights that will not steal your free space.

5. What color expands the space of the room: choose wallpaper for the walls

What wall color is best for a small room? And how to visually enlarge a room with wallpaper? Here are some photo ideas!

For a free and fresh atmosphere, choose light, natural and pastel shades of beige, gray, green and blue. Fashionable olive and mint tones will be an excellent choice. Pair them with white and different textures for a more expressive design. Please note that wallpaper for walls is best chosen with medium to large, but not small patterns, which can make a small room look crowded.

A good option is to design the walls and furniture in one color. The interior will look cohesive and spacious, and colorful accents can be introduced with vases, houseplants, cushions and other accessories.

High shelves, shelving and cabinets to the ceiling will help you make the most of the space and also make it look taller. Just as horizontal stripes expand a room, vertical accents help lift the ceiling. Therefore, instead of one wide wardrobe in the living room, it is better to put two narrow, but high ones. Two tall showcases for decoration, kitchen cabinets to the ceiling and shelving with open shelves are also suitable for this role.

7. How to visually enlarge a room with curtains

A small room needs good natural light. Therefore, the curtains here should emphasize the windows, leaving them open. For this, ordinary long curtains work well, which can make the room appear taller if they are decorated in a bright color (like vertical stripes). On the other hand, for a small room, you can safely choose curtains for wallpaper, stripes and sheer tulle in a simple cut. It would be better to refuse lush French curtains, as well as any decor on the windowsills.
