So let's get started! I took an old beige sweater. I thought for a long time what it can be combined with so that it is elegant and suitable in color. And then, going through things in the closet, I came across an old embroidered napkin. The white fabric, which was embroidered, was already worn out and holes appeared in some places. This napkin has been embroidered in the 60s of the last century! It hasn't been used in a long time, so I thought I'd found a suitable use for it.

I took a simple fabric with roses (new), beige cotton lace and decided that all this would be together decorative for my bed.

Before starting work on the "invention" of the pillow, I thought about how it might look. At first I wanted to make it small and take only half of the embroidered napkin. But then I came to the conclusion that you need to use a napkin completely.

By the way, I did not suffer and rip open the sweater, but simply cut it at the seams, separating the sleeves and collar.

I removed the collar and sleeves to those things that are still waiting for me to do them.

I cut out two more or less even rectangles from the front and back of the sweater. I threw away the resulting trimmings, and then also cut off the gum. She somehow did not fit into my “project” of the pillow.

Then she turned to the napkin. I decided to use only the embroidery itself, so I cut it out of the old fabric.

It turned out here is such a preparation. My knitwear turned out to be not “loose”, it does not dissolve at the edges. The future product keeps its shape quite normally and does not stretch in all directions. By the way, if you decide to also sew a pillow from an old sweater, choose knitwear that is not too stretchy, otherwise the warp can easily ruin all your work.

The next stage of work was that I sewed the embroidery to the knitted fabric by hand.

The photo shows that I am only slightly basted embroidery , made the stitches wide and applied black threads. This is so that after sewing on a typewriter, black threads are clearly visible on white and can be easily removed.

The first stitch I did on the machine was a regular stitch. . So it went from beginning to end throughout the embroidery. The second and third seams were also along the entire length of the embroidery, but with an overcast seam.

Here is the embroidery already sewn . I ironed it well so that it fits well on the knitted fabric.

It's time to prepare inner pillow bag . It is needed in order to fill it with some kind of filler and then the pillow acquires volume. I found a piece of white cloth (it was once used to wrap parcels).

To evenly cut off the desired size of the fabric, I also ironed it. I made the size of the inner bag 1 centimeter smaller than the top decorative pillowcase.

I sewed a simple bag on a sewing machine, leaving one (narrow) side of the bag unsewn.

The edge of the bag was bent and hemmed on a typewriter.

And again I iron the resulting bag for the filler.

And here he is filler. I only had a synthetic winterizer. I layered it and cut it to size.

For the back wall of the pillow, I cut the colored fabric to the size of the knitted strip and added 2 centimeters to its size on all sides. These centimeters are needed in order to make the seams and leave a little to create the volume of the pillow.

If in doubt that you will evenly sew plain fabric and knitwear on a typewriter, sew them together first with a basting stitch.

I sewed the back and front walls of the pillow on a typewriter.

It's time to sew the lace on top of the knitted fabric.

There is no particular difficulty in this. You just need to be more careful about stitching the corners. To do this, carefully fold the lace at the corners so that it is not stretched. Then the pillow will look good.

I lace all four sides of the decorative pillowcase. She, as well as the inner bag, has one side not sewn up.

So the decorative pillowcase for my pillow is ready. Its size turned out to be 35 centimeters wide and 84 long.

I carefully insert the synthetic winterizer into the prepared inner bag. I don’t stuff it tightly so that the pillow is neither flat nor round.

And again I go to the machine to sew up the inner bag. But I sew the top pillowcase by hand so that I can easily open the seam and wash it when needed.

2 Easy Ways to Make a DIY Pillow from an Old Sweater

These two methods differ in the time it takes to make a pillow and in practicality in further operation. Nevertheless, the essence is the same - the pillow is made from the main (smooth) parts of the sweater, and the sleeves and the upper part are cut off.

way-1:

If the width of the knitted item matches the desired pillow size, you just need to cut off everything below the armhole, without affecting the side seams. Turn the resulting double element inside out and sew on a sewing machine along the cut edge (it is advisable to lay a braid on the seam). The bottom (processed part) can be decorated at will - sew on ribbons, ties, buttons, or simply sew by hand.

If there is a zipper, after cutting off the top part, you need to “close” the top edge of the zipper. By the way, in this case, it will be possible to remove the cover through it, so you can also sew up the bottom edge.

way-2:

If you have a desire to make a smaller pillow + you want to make it easier to wash such a decorative pillowcase (it is guaranteed not to stretch, no matter how you dry it), use another method.

Measure the pillow, cut out 2 elements from the sweater, repeat them on a dense cotton fabric (old bed linen is quite suitable). Fold all 4 elements so that the knitted parts are inside, and then sew the seams along the edge on a typewriter. Put a pillow inside (or fill it with padding polyester), tuck the open edge, and then decorate as described in method-1.

If we are talking about a cardigan with buttons or a zipper, there will be three knitted elements (the front of the pillow is made up of two elements).
