Do-it-yourself wardrobe under the stairs in a private house: types and options. A profitable and convenient solution in a private house - a closet under the stairs A closet under the stairs in the hallway

Do you have a multi-level apartment or a two-story cottage? This means that the layout could not have done without a staircase. Of course, if this is a helical structure, then there is simply no space under the stairs, but if these are mid-flight stairs (both with closed and open steps), then the entire area under them can be used to good use.

How exactly to do this depends on the type of stairs, the height of the span, and even on the room in which the “free area” is located.

Storage systems under the stairs

How to use the space under the stairs in different rooms

If the staircase is located in the living room, then under it you can install:

  • home cinema;
  • TV set;
  • home library;
  • aquarium;
  • fireplace;
  • comfortable reading chair
  • sofa;
  • piano or other large musical instrument.

If the staircase is in the bedroom, then the free space can be turned into an office, or an additional place to relax.

Advice. In the case when the under-stair space is located in the kitchen, they can be turned or all the overall household appliances or a sink can be brought here. However, in the latter case, it will be necessary to lay all the necessary communications (water, electricity) and, of course, ventilation systems.

If we talk about the space under the stairs in general, without being tied to a specific room, then eight interesting ideas can be distinguished at once:

  1. Library- you will not need a separate room to store your book collection if you arrange spacious shelves under the stairs. Or you can take out a bookcase and an armchair with a floor lamp here - an excellent reading corner away from the hustle and bustle.
  2. Additional seating area- a sofa or lounger, made in accordance with the dimensions of the available space. It will be as cozy as a canopy bed protected from prying eyes. There is no better option for afternoon relaxation or reading than such a cozy corner.
  3. Cozy place to relax

  4. Home office. As a rule, the layout of typical houses does not provide for an office. But you can ennoble the area under the stairs - put a table, a chair, the necessary shelves here and you will get a full-fledged workplace for creativity, sewing, drawing or working at a computer.
  5. A complete workplace

    Computer desk and cabinet under the stairs

    Place for lessons for schoolchildren

  6. Bar counter, bar. A full-fledged bar under the stairs is a real salvation for owners of small kitchens. This is a functional and very practical solution, which requires built-in cabinets and high bar stools.
  7. Retractable bar hides under the ladder

  8. Exhibition. Handmade embroideries, a collection of dolls, art canvases or author's modeling, sports cups - there is no better place for a collection than a separate room.
  9. Place for paintings or collections of things

  10. Home greenhouse. Your favorite flowers will help you organize a cozy green area under the stairs. Just do not forget to use special fitolamps here, because this area cannot boast of good natural lighting. You can also install open shelving here for varietal plants grown for sale - you don’t have to look for a place in the house or insulate the extension.
  11. Living plants are located in a place equipped for them.

  12. artificial pond- a fountain or waterfall, an aquarium or even a decorative pool. In the area under the stairs, you will get a corner with a calming water feature, and you can not worry about expensive decoration in the living room, which often does not accept high humidity.
  13. Aquarium with live fish and turtles

  14. Play area, additional children's area. The best own house for children is under the stairs. It's cozy, safe and so mysterious. And you don't have to invent a treehouse or buy expensive imitation toys. All you need is a soft floor and a place for toys.
  15. Place for children to play

    How to equip a toilet or kitchen under the stairs

    If your house has a marching staircase, then the space available under it will be enough to accommodate an additional bathroom. Use a small washstand and a compact toilet bowl here - in order for these plumbing accessories to fit comfortably for a person, a ladder of 8-10 steps will be enough.

    From an ergonomic point of view, the height of the ceiling in such a space can be in the range of 2-2.7 meters, the length should be 2 meters or more, and the width should be more than 1.2 meters. This bathroom will be convenient to use for people of different heights.

    Small toilet under the stairs

    Important. The bathroom must have all the necessary communications, as well as high-quality ventilation, otherwise mold will appear in the room very quickly.

    The nuances of the location of kitchen elements

    The kitchen will require even more communications than the bathroom - this is electricity (many sockets for connecting household appliances and lighting fixtures), plumbing, sewage, ventilation. The kitchen under the stairs can have different dimensions - depending on the size of the flight of stairs and its configuration.

    Sometimes only a part of the necessary items are placed here, and sometimes a full-fledged room, especially if the rest of the rooms in the house are very compact.

    The cooking area in the kitchen is located under the stairs

    How to arrange storage systems

    In a small niche under the stairs, you can create a set with different functional purposes:

    1. Chest of drawers or drawers for storing things that are not used in a certain season. Mirrors can be hung on cabinets. It is clear that such furniture is made to order, because part of its facades will be beveled, but this is one of the most ergonomic solutions.
    2. Drawers under the stairs will not be superfluous

    3. Library. Books are placed on closed or open shelves. All the free space under the stairs can be occupied by books - just provide a stable small stepladder if the shelves extend all the way to the ceiling.
    4. Bookshelves located under the stairs

    5. Shelving- you can hang two modest shelves here or create a full-fledged storage system. It all depends on your needs, and on the size of the space under the stairs, as well as on how well this area will be viewed from different positions relative to the rest of the interior.
    6. Shelving open shelving

    7. Closet or closet for those things that need to be removed away from views. Mops, buckets, a vacuum cleaner or ironing board, tools - for everything that does not find a better place in the house, a closed pantry under the stairs will do.

    8. Stylish pantry hid indoors under the stairs

    9. Home garage. Bicycles, a stroller, a children's scooter or a car - they are often used and it is not very convenient to use the garage for their permanent storage. This decision is especially justified if the staircase goes directly to the front door. Modern mounting systems allow you to hang bicycles directly to the stairs or to the wall - very convenient, because it does not take up space on the floor, and it looks unusual.
    10. Good place to store bikes and strollers

    11. Wine Vault. A wine storage facility in the house can be the best solution for houses on problematic soils, where a standard basement construction cannot be completed. The interior with such an addition will look especially stylish.
    12. And under the stairs to the basement you can place a collection of wines

    13. A place to store homemade items. Again, if your home doesn't have a basement, one can be made under the stairs. Then it is worth providing some doors to hide all your edible treasures. But this is a very convenient solution, because you do not have to leave the house every time you need another product.
    14. Retractable consoles for storing blanks for the winter

    15. Place for washing machine and a clothes dryer. May contain drawers for storing laundry detergents.
    16. The washing machine is hidden in a niche under the stairs

    Use the space under the stairs correctly - you can be sure that the design of your home will only benefit from this.

When planning the construction of a second floor or attic in a house, the question always arises of how to optimally use the space under the stairs. We offer you the best modern options that will help you practicalize the place under the stairs. Which one to use? It all depends on your technical (and financial) capabilities and on the needs of your household. In addition, it is important at what stage you thought about what to place under the stairs: as usual, the earlier you plan, the more opportunities you have.

Storage: use the space under the stairs.

The most common option for practical organization of space under the stairs is to take it for storage. It can be cabinets, pantries, dressing rooms or just open shelves.

  1. Storage systems under the stairs.

    The main problem of organizing storage under the stairs is the significant cost of furniture, which must fit under the bevel of the flight of stairs. Therefore, this option using standard rectangular cabinets and chests of drawers will allow you to relatively painlessly equip the space under the stairs. This technique works very well for a studio apartment, where the most efficient use of every centimeter of space is required at minimal cost.

    Another option on how to place a cabinet under the stairs on a budget is to use standard cabinets and complement them with beveled fronts for doors. In this case, an additional fee will be only for the manufacture of individual facades.

    An open storage system is the most inexpensive. Using standard shelving profiles and inexpensive storage containers, you can set up space under the stairs quickly and inexpensively.

  2. Hallway under the stairs.

    It is very convenient to use the space under the stairs as part of the hallway. Storage space can be at the top of the high part of the stairs - in a closet with a mirrored door.
    Or you can use the entire staircase - high cabinets for outerwear, low cabinets for shoes.

    It is not necessary to hide all outerwear in closets. Under the stairs, you can easily equip an open hanger for clothes and place shelves for shoes.

  3. Wardrobe under the stairs.

    If the stairs in the house are in the room, then in the space under it you can arrange a wardrobe. These can be simple open storage systems - with clothes rails and sectional drawers.

    Or you can equip a real dressing room on the back side of the stairwell. This storage option is the dream of every housewife.

    If the location of the stairs does not allow you to make an entrance, then the traditional option with built-in wardrobes under the stairs is also quite practical.

  4. How to place a closet under the stairs.

    The stairway is not always located in a secluded corner of the house, if the stairs go through one of the main rooms, then the organization of convenient storage of a lot of things needed for the bedroom or dining room can be framed using a beautiful mirror cabinet in combination with mirror chests of drawers. Such use of the space under the stairs not only does not spoil the room, but also decorates it.

    It is not necessary to use special furniture for a stylish design of a place under the stairs. You can always achieve a harmonious effect by complementing standard furniture with shelves. Such shelves visually more fully fill the space under the stairs without cluttering it up.
    If the task is not in beauty, but in the possibility of placing as many things as possible under the stairs, then the use of a corner wardrobe will help to effectively solve this problem.

  5. How to make shelves under the stairs.

    As we saw above, shelves combined with standard rectangular furniture will help to organize the space under the stairs neatly and practically. Properly selected finishing materials, fashionable accent wall - and you have an excellent result at low cost.
    To store things under the stairs, you can do with only shelves. It is important to understand here that the depth of the shelf can rarely take up all the available space, because. it will be inconvenient for you to look for things in the depths of the shelf in a half-bent state. But to beat some part of the stairs as shelves is quite a practical option.

    If the style of designing the space under the stairs is important to you, then such spectacular contrasting shelves that are in harmony with the design of the stairs are a spectacular and fashionable solution.

  6. How to make a pantry under the stairs.

    The main approach to arranging a pantry under the stairs is easy access to the entire space. Therefore, it is convenient to make double doors here so that it is convenient to work with the lower part of the pantry.

    Alternatively, front drawers can be made under the stairs. But this option is suitable for rarely used things, because. has limited storage capacity in terms of the dimensions of things and such access to things can hardly be called comfortable.

Stair construction is the most important element of any multi-storey building, including duplex apartments and private houses. For its organization, a certain area is allocated, which, with a competent approach, can be used to store various household items and clothing.

Functional closet under the stairs

Modern constructors, architects and designers pay a lot of attention to the organization of the space located under the stairs. One of the most successful and popular options is to install a built-in wardrobe under the stairs. There is enough space under the span to store things here.

The closet under the stairs allows you to use every centimeter of free space, use it with benefit and for its intended purpose. This solution allows you to beautifully arrange a place to store household items, unnecessary little things or clothes. In addition, a closet under the stairs can act as a decor, giving the interior a special charm and beauty.

To date, there are a huge number of ideas that make this dream a reality. Before starting work, look at the photos of the finished work, and you will also need competent and detailed instructions for installing the built-in structure with your own hands. It can be both written instructions and video material.

Types of cabinet structures built into the flight of stairs: 5 options

If you decide that the closet under the stairs is vital for you, then you should decide on its type. There are the following options for cabinets under the stairs:

  1. Closed cabinets in traditional design. Inside, you can use completely different filling options: shelves, hooks. All this is closed by ordinary hinged doors. Door sizes can vary. It is allowed to make blind areas for storing boxes.
  2. Sliding wardrobes are an excellent alternative to wardrobes with hinged doors. They allow you to save a lot of free space due to the fact that their doors do not swing open, but move along guides. In this case, it is best to make the doors the same height. Otherwise, it may be difficult to move them along the guides.
  3. Open shelving is very convenient to place under the steps. Simple shelves are great for storing books or decor. You can install multi-level shelving with beveled or rectangular sections.
  4. Drawers are very easy to use. Suitable for storing small things that should not be put on public display and are difficult to place in cabinets on shelves. Such boxes can be mounted on a special frame using internal rails.
  5. Glass showcases are suitable for storing dishes, souvenirs and other decorative items. Ideal if the staircase is located in the living room or dining room. The presence of glass doors in the showcase will reliably protect things from dust. And to achieve the maximum decorative effect, you can equip the showcase with LED strip. Such glass showcases will give the interior a feeling of incredible lightness and visually expand the space, making it more functional.

Having decided on the design of the cabinet under the stairs, you should pay attention to the material from which it will be made. The most common today are the following materials:

  1. Wood, which can be used to create the frame of the product, as well as in the manufacture of individual elements of cabinets (drawers, shelves, doors, and so on).
  2. Chipboard and MDF are materials that are used as an alternative to wood. They are cheaper and can be used to create doors and shelves.
  3. Metal is the basis of almost all fasteners. The frame of some models is made from it, as well as guides. This also includes fasteners for internal filling.
  4. Mirrors and glass are ideal for decorating a structure. Cabinet doors and shelves can be created from these materials.

Wardrobe under the stairs, made of solid wood

In order for the ladder structure to turn into a functional closet under the stairs, it is necessary to carefully consider the appearance, as well as select the material for the structure. And then it's a matter of technology. Turning your dream into reality will not be a problem.

Focus on photo and video materials, and also make sure that you always have instructions for installing the built-in structure with your own hands. With this approach, you are guaranteed to get an excellent result.

Detailed instructions for installing the built-in structure with your own hands

Having decided on the independent manufacture of a cabinet under the stairs, you need to make a detailed drawing. Calculate the number of shelves, sections and doors. Decide on the texture of the interior and exterior finishes. The work is facilitated by the fact that the role of the top, side and rear walls of the cabinet is performed by the ladder structure and the walls of the room. Therefore, finishing is needed only for the doors of the product.

Necessary tools and materials

For work, you will need certain materials and tools:

  1. Roulette and pencil.
  2. Self-tapping screws and brackets for furniture.
  3. Electric jigsaw, drill and screwdriver.
  4. Material for creating a frame and interior decoration.
  5. Material for finishing the front side.
  6. Furniture accessories.

Prepare the space under the stairs, freeing it from extraneous things. In order not to damage the floor covering during operation, cover it with a cloth or film.

Be sure to mark the shelves depending on their location immediately after manufacturing. For shoes, it is best to make small departments, and for outerwear - large ones. Partitions are built of drywall or chipboard. Combine clothing sections with different shelves or drawers.

Stages of self-assembly of the cabinet under the stairs

Follow the following sequence of actions:

  1. Cut out the details strictly with the dimensions indicated in the drawing. To do this, you can use a hacksaw or an electric jigsaw. Do not forget that all elements require a careful approach and compliance with dimensions.
  2. The interior space can be finished with decorative panels. The easiest option is to stick wallpaper or paint. It all depends on the individual preferences of the residents.
  3. For zoning space, install internal partitions.
  4. Mark with a pencil places for shelves and other fasteners. In order to install one shelf, use two bars. The length of the shelves should match the length of the niche.

    It is better to entrust the installation of exclusive cabinets under the stairs to experienced craftsmen

  5. The door leaf is decorated before installation.
  6. At the last stage, hooks and bars for hanging coat hangers are installed inside the cabinets.

Do-it-yourself wardrobe under the stairs in a private house: types and options

Rational use of space under the stairs is one of the common problems for owners of private houses with 2 or more floors. The arrangement of the cabinet in this niche is considered the best solution. Let's take a look at all the existing types of stair cabinets and find out how convenient they are in a given situation, and home craftsmen will receive valuable tips on assembling such a cabinet with their own hands.

Nuances of placement

As soon as the people do not try to beat the empty space under the stairs. They put aquariums here, try to “shove” a single bed, install a computer desk and even equip a working mini-bar.

But in most houses, stairs are located in the corridor, and as practice has shown, the most worthy option is the installation of a cabinet. After all, according to the standards, the width of a narrow staircase is 800 mm. While the volume cabinet (from serial models) has a depth of 650 mm.

So it turns out that you not only close an ownerless niche, but also get a luxurious and very spacious closet. We will talk about the types of designs a little later, and now a few words about filling options.

Illustrations Recommendations

Classic wardrobe ladder.

The hallway is considered one of the most common options. Depending on the size and configuration of the span, hinged or sliding doors, as well as drawers are installed here. You can do without doors, but it's not for everyone.

With such a depth, all actively used outerwear and shoes are placed in this wardrobe.

Pantry.

In such a pantry, shelves for preservation, an ironing board, a vacuum cleaner, a baby stroller, a bicycle and other necessary, but not very convenient things to store, fit perfectly.

By the way - this is one of the available options for self-production. It is enough to hang the required number of simple shelves and install a facade with hinged doors.

Bookshelf.

Useful and beautiful at the same time. Now there are no design styles that bookshelves would not fit into. Moreover, the books are suitable both for the hallway and for the living room.

This bookcase has an interesting feature. In order to put books, there are enough shelves 30 cm deep, and the rest of the space can be easily adapted, for example, to the above-mentioned pantry.

Kitchen Cabinet.

Not every two-story cottage has an impressive size. Installing a cascade of drawer shelves and other details under the stairs, overnight solves the problem of placing a traditional kitchen corner.

From experience, all kitchen utensils in a small cottage fit perfectly with a ladder cabinet.

Wine cabinet.

This option is suitable for connoisseurs and collectors of wines. Under the stairs, wine cages with cells for bottles are installed and lighting is equipped.

There is one flaw in the wine version - it looks beautiful, but collection wines require a constant temperature (that's why they are stored in cellars), and the living room or hallway is not suitable for elite wines.

Sideboard.

Settled exclusively in the living room. This option does not carry a functional load, its task is to emphasize the style and decorate the room.

Types and features

Competent filling is important, but it directly depends on the angle of inclination, size, height and location of the flight of stairs. Accordingly, each of the above options has its own design solutions, which will be discussed further.

Wardrobe under stairs with hinged doors

Swing doors are deservedly considered classics. If you want to close the contents of a niche from prying eyes and at the same time not spend a lot, then this is your option. Such facades are good for arranging a hallway.

If there is not much space, then you should not do too wide swing doors, a maximum of 50 cm. Piano hinges are considered the cheapest option for hanging, but I recommend taking ordinary furniture ones. Firstly, they are easier and faster to mount, and secondly, they have a fine-tuning function.

In sections with doors higher, rods or hooks are mounted under outerwear. The lower sector is traditionally given over to shoes, and small cells under the first steps are either equipped with boxes for small things, or an empty niche is left there, for example, for a vacuum cleaner.

It is inconvenient to install a sliding wardrobe under the stairs. Asymmetric truncated doors move only in one direction, and the extreme sector generally remains a dead zone. It is possible to solve the issue, but only professionals can do it, and such a design is expensive.

Open shelving under stairs

Open shelving is considered a simple and affordable way of arranging the space under the stairs. The manufacture of such structures does not cause difficulties even for an amateur, because in essence, here you only need to knock down the simplest shelves and "tie" them to the span.

Those who decide to mount this option at home should take into account a couple of nuances:

  1. Both horizontal and vertical segments of the structure should be a continuation of the line of steps. Otherwise, the cell will not fit into the overall ensemble and will become an alien inclusion;
  2. The maximum depth of a small open shelf is 30 - 40 cm, and it is advisable to cover such shelves from the back with some kind of shield. Small rack cells should not go into a dark void. If you do not want to mount the back panel, then the cells must be made voluminous.

Modular vertical types

Modular furniture is a simple, but in this case, not the best solution. The very concept of modular cabinets implies structures assembled from ready-made modules.

There is no problem in cabinets and shelves, just buy and install, but you will have to try hard to adapt serial products to an individual staircase.

Although this solution is suitable as a filling for a cabinet with a solid facade. Buy a modular shelving unit and hide it behind hinged or sliding doors so you don't have to fiddle with building shelves inside.

Retractable types

The use of retractable or roll-out sections is considered to be perhaps the most rational and effective use of under-stair space. After all, the niche is divided into separate cells, and often of different sizes. Under each such box, a good housewife will definitely find some things.

  • With boxes, everything is simple, people have long been accustomed to them. You need to decide how many boxes you need and what are the dimensions of these boxes. But the problem is that a lot of boxes do not always match the design concept of the room;

  • Withdrawable modules are considered to be a more progressive and convenient solution. Here the space is divided into sections and each of these sections rolls out from under the stairs. That is, you have full access to the whole segment. The design is convenient, but difficult to arrange, plus you need good fittings.

Combined wardrobe under the stairs

If you need everything at once, that is, beauty, originality and high functionality, then you should pay attention to combined cabinets. One such cabinet may partially include all those structures that have been described before. For example, this layout works well:

  • The highest and most comfortable furniture segments are given under the wardrobe. It is covered with hinged or sliding compartment doors, by the way, you can also mount a mirror here;
  • The central sector - from the level of the eyes to the level of the belt is made open. It is decorated with books, figurines, dishes, in general, with any decorating items, up to the TV;
  • On the lower tier, shelves closed with doors or roll-out systems are mounted.

Materials, equipment, arrangement

The creation of exclusive furniture, which includes cabinets under stairs, begins with the choice of material. First you need to choose what the main supporting structures will be made of, here we have 4 options:

  1. Wood - for a novice master, it is easiest to assemble a wooden frame. In such designs, a bar of 50x50 or 40x40 mm is enough for load-bearing racks, you should not take less. Intermediate sectors are assembled from a 30x30 mm bar. On shelves and partitions there is a planed board 20 mm thick;

  1. Chipboard - laminated particle boards are considered the most common option. They are easy to cut, but I do not recommend doing it yourself. It’s easier to order cutting and laminating the ends in a furniture workshop according to your size, and it’s better to take the material from them, it will come out cheaper;
  2. MDF - these boards are more expensive than chipboard, but they are considered environmentally friendly, and there are formaldehydes in chipboard. The thickness of both MDF and chipboard boards is in the range of 16 - 21 mm;

  1. Drywall - drywall is suitable for self-assembly, but you will have to tinker with such a cabinet. First, from a wooden beam or metal profiles, you will need to assemble the frame. Then sheathe it with GKL. And at the finish, all this will have to be puttied, sanded and painted, so think about it.

How to make a closet under the stairs with your own hands

For self-production, wood and chipboard are suitable for us, but it’s not realistic to make a beautiful and durable wooden cabinet for a beginner, so I recommend using slab material.

Preparatory work

To assemble any structure, a drawing is needed, but only a professional can correctly draw it, so in this case a sketch is enough. When compiling it, you should not rely on memory or ingenuity, measure, draw and indicate on paper absolutely all sizes, even the smallest ones.

As for the docking fittings, it is easier for a beginner to work with metal corners, they are fixed with self-tapping screws. To assemble a cabinet from chipboard or MDF, confirmations are used.

Cabinet installation

If we proceed from the fact that the chipboard plates have already been cut with us, then only the assembly will remain for us. We will build the cabinet rigidly, that is, fasten it to the floor, walls and the staircase itself.

  • All vertical racks are installed first. First, according to the sketch, make markings on the inclined canvas of the flight of stairs, after which you take a plumb line and mark the points of attachment of the sheets to the floor;

  • The inner frame is not visible, so the sheets are easier to attach to metal corners. Below you will not have any problems, and from above the corners will have to be bent to the desired angle, because our stairs are inclined;
  • Now, vertical sheets are marked for horizontal shelves. If you want everything to be perfect, then according to the markings for each shelf, drill a series of holes with a confirmation drill and screw the shelves onto confirmations. Although under the closed facade it is more reasonable to mount the shelves on the corners;

  • To install doors on furniture hinges, you will need a Forstsner drill. There are paper templates for each model of furniture hinges. Using this template, mark the hinge point on the doors, after which you make a recess with a fortsner drill and screw the hinges;
  • Then it remains only to screw the doors with self-tapping screws to the vertical posts.

decorative trim

  • The decorative finish of the cabinet depends on the material chosen for the facade. So wooden facades are varnished or painted. The second option is simpler, but it is only suitable if the color of the paint resonates with the general surroundings;

When finishing a wooden facade, impregnation with natural oil or wax is considered the latest fashion, but when choosing this method, keep in mind that you will have to renew the coating every couple of years.

  • Laminated doors do not require any additional decor; laminate is considered a strong, reliable and durable coating;

  • But glass facades are leading in the popularity rating. Transparent glass is rarely used, the palm is shared by a mirror and matte patterns with sandblasting;
  • There is also painted glass and a polymer film with patterns. For do-it-yourself decor, they are the best fit, because such beauty settles down within an hour, and lasts for years.

Even the owners of private houses, despite the large areas, strive to use all the space as efficiently as possible. One of the places that allow you to do this is the flight of stairs. Or rather, not the structure itself, designed to climb to the top floor, but a rather large area located under it. A competent approach will allow you to build a closet under the stairs, in which there will be enough space for storing not only clothes, but also other things.

Features of the placement of the cabinet under the stairs

Such unusual furniture will give a number of advantages.

  • First of all, it is a rational approach to the use of free space.
  • The ability to choose the most interesting solution that can give the interior uniqueness and completeness.
  • With this design, it will be easier to maintain order.

If we talk about the weaknesses of such a solution, then they include the following:

  • a serious approach to drafting a project, if you do not feel sufficient skill in yourself, it is better to turn to professionals;
  • non-standard geometry of space increases the complexity of installation;
  • the design of the stairs should not suffer from such a neighborhood.

The idea of arranging the space under the stairs can be peeped on the Internet, adapting it to the features of the room and the intended purpose. A closet under the stairs can become a storage place for clothes, books, homemade items, wine stocks, etc. You can even equip a corner that can easily fit several lockers, a sofa and a table. Sometimes you just need to isolate yourself from everyone, work or relax alone.

Since the sizes and shapes of stairs vary greatly, ready-made models for installation simply do not exist, moreover, parts of cabinet furniture will reduce the usable area. It is best to build a closet into the resulting niche, using the walls, the floor and the part located under the steps in the form of the main structural elements.

Types of designs of cabinets built-in under the stairs

If desired, to create a built-in wardrobe, you can use several approaches at the same time to get the most optimal and non-trivial solution.

The load-bearing elements of the built-in furniture will be the walls, the section of the stairs and the floor. To fix the sashes, the so-called false frame is sufficient. It is a frame made around the perimeter, 10 cm wide. Laminated chipboard is used for manufacturing. Guides are mounted on the lower and upper elements. Side strips serve as chippers for sliding doors. This approach will help to hide small irregularities and give the facade a finished look.

If plasterboard sheathing is made, it will first be necessary to make a frame of metal profiles or wooden bars. Shelves and a door system are subsequently attached to it.

As materials use:

  • wood, not only the frame is made from it, but also boxes, doors, shelves;
  • Chipboard and MDF are more affordable and can serve as an alternative to expensive natural wood;
  • the main purpose of the metal is fasteners, fittings, frame construction, guides, elements for organizing a storage system;
  • glass, mirrors, plastic, bamboo, rattan, leather are used to decorate the facade.

Internal filling of the built-in cabinet under the stairs

It is important to decide in advance what exactly the cabinet under the stairs will be used for. This approach will help to more accurately determine the internal content.

If the furniture is intended for storing clothes, the following items will be required:

  • bar (one or more) for hangers;
  • shelves;
  • drawers or drawers;
  • inclined shoe racks;
  • trousers;
  • a device for storing scarves, ties, belts;
  • a shallow drawer with compartments in which you can quickly find small items.

Several rows of shelves provide storage for books. The back wall with a mirror and lighting will present any collection in all its glory. A similar design is appropriate for a rack with beautiful dishes.

It is convenient to put homemade blanks on the shelves in a closed cabinet.

A makeshift wine cellar consists of shelves divided into sections sized to fit a standard bottle.

Types and arrangement of facades of built-in wardrobes

Particular attention should be paid to the facade. It is he who will be responsible for the design style. For these purposes, all types of materials used in the manufacture of furniture are used.

The budget option in the form of laminated chipboard is not very reliable, it would be preferable to stop at MDF.

Natural wood, of course, has a lot of advantages, the only negative is the high price.

Good opportunities are given by the use of glass. Matte canvases are decorated with whimsical images and patterns made in sandblasting technique. Stained glass inserts will give the facade a luxurious look. Applying colored varnish from a wide palette of shades will allow you to choose the tone that is most suitable for the rest of the interior.

Mirrors add light and volume, visually expand the boundaries of the room. And also such a surface will play the role of a kind of dressing table, which, undoubtedly, will be appreciated by the entire female part of the family.

High-quality plastic requires minimal maintenance, has a wide range of colors and textures, weighs little and is affordable.

Natural materials (rattan, bamboo) will bring ethnic notes to the design of the room, add warmth and comfort. They look simple yet elegant.

You can also decorate the facade with the help of photo printing, covered with leather.

Another unusual way involves a combination of natural and artificial materials. Between two acrylic panels, you can place your favorite elements of natural origin: shells, leaves, grass, bamboo, etc.

An interesting solution is to make the facade not from a single canvas, but to make a separate door for each section. This approach is used in the case of internal filling from drawers. It should be borne in mind that in material terms, the construction will cost more, but at the same time it will be possible to get quick access to the content.

Other facade options include combinations of different materials. Plots can be in the form of different geometric shapes.

Also, the facade can be straight or radius. The combination of convex and concave parts creates a wave effect.

Which mechanism for opening the facades to choose for the cabinet under the stairs

For built-in wardrobes, different door opening systems are used.

Swing structures are considered the simplest and most reliable. Door leaves are attached to the frame with hinges. The advantages of this type include:

  • ease of use;
  • no noise during operation;
  • full accessibility to the interior space;
  • reasonable price.

Modern models can be equipped with closers and hinges for better performance.

The only weak point is the need for free space in front of the closet. If the room is not large, then you should choose another option.

Sliding doors move along rails within the cabinet, and do not need additional space. The movement is due to the system of rollers.

These doors look very impressive and can decorate any interior.

It is worth considering that their service life depends on the material of the guides. Aluminum rails will last up to 25 years, but steel rails can fail much earlier.

The device of sliding doors is quite complicated, which is reflected in their cost.

Often their work is accompanied by noise.

The view of the interior space is reduced by half, since one part of the cabinet always remains behind the sash.

The useful volume of furniture is reduced due to the installation of a sliding system.

The "cargo" system represents a row of 2-3 retractable sections, repeating the geometry of the space under the stairs. By their design, they are similar to racks, the movement of which is provided by rollers. The highest module can be equipped with a bar to hang clothes on hangers.

An intermediate position is occupied by folding doors. The canvas consists of several parts fastened with loops. During opening, they are folded like a book or an accordion, and shifted to the cabinet walls. The movement takes place along the guide located at the top. Currently there are models with 2 rails. This technique allows you to increase the stability of the door leaf.

Folding doors are usually lightweight, do not interfere with access to things located in any part of the cabinet, and also take up little space.

Do-it-yourself wardrobe under the stairs

Before you make a closet under the stairs in the house, you need to carry out the appropriate work. After the issue of the appointment of furniture is resolved, proceed to the preparatory stage.

What you need to know about cabinet installation

Actions begin with the execution of the drawing. This will help the necessary measurements (depth, height and width). It is important to think over the content of the product to the smallest detail: the number, dimensions and location of shelves, drawers, partitions, etc. The dimensions of the structure are determined by the space under the stairs. Carefully study the state of the surfaces, and make corrections for curvature. Width, height and depth measurements are taken at several points. For a built-in wardrobe, it is customary to take the maximum values.

Professionals advise indenting about 60 cm from the bottom step, since this area will not provide much storage space, and it will be inconvenient to use it. It is more appropriate to plan a partition in this place.

When determining the dimensions of the shelves, it is required to take into account the thickness of the material from which they will be made. The recommended maximum length is 60 cm, if this value is exceeded, deflection occurs. For a bookcase, the shelves must be even shorter due to the significant load.

The location of the sliding sections is determined by the width of the doors, otherwise it will be problematic to use them.

Also choose the method of opening the valves. It is better for a novice master to stop at the simplest option - swing doors.

According to the detailed drawing, it is much easier to calculate the necessary materials, fittings, fasteners. To the amount received, it is worth adding a margin in case of unforeseen situations.

If you plan to make a cabinet under the stairs with your own hands, prepare the tools in advance. To work, you may need:

  • grinder with a set of disks;
  • a hammer;
  • jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • electric drill;
  • tape measure and pencil.

Stages of installation of the cabinet under the stairs

Before proceeding with the installation, sawing of the material is carried out. If in doubt that do this work carefully, you should contact the furniture workshop.

Frame assembly

Start by making the frame. It is made of wood or a metal profile reinforced with wooden bars. Each post is attached to the surface at an angle of 90°. Holes are drilled in the wall and floor, dowels are driven in, the structure is fixed with thin and long screws. Be sure to leave a small gap in order to finally align the structure after connecting all the parts. Check again and only then fix. Sheathing is carried out with drywall, and the canvases are fixed with self-tapping screws. The resulting ends are closed with an aluminum corner. This technique will protect the material from destruction and give additional rigidity.

Installation of internal filling

The next stage involves the installation of partitions according to preliminary markings. To install the shelves, you will need 2 bars for each unit. If they are attached directly to the wall surface, then euro screws are used, and they are fixed on the frame with self-tapping screws. Stationary shelves are fastened with supports.

The rod is inserted into the prepared recesses and securely fixed.

All details are trying to withstand in the same style. To do this, they can be painted or pasted over with a special film. It is better to choose light shades so that the space does not look too gloomy.

Installation of built-in wardrobe doors (swing mechanism)

The most difficult stage is hanging the doors. It begins with the installation of the door frame. Its parts are fastened with self-tapping screws to the frame. Hinges are installed on the door frame, and sashes are screwed to them. For these purposes, an invoice type of fittings is used. With its help, you can eliminate small distortions that occur over time.
