Thick ceiling paint. Ceiling paint - which is better? Advantages of water-based paints

Water-based paints are produced on a water basis, which determines its main qualities. Due to the mass of advantages and versatility, the paint quickly gained popularity among buyers. Suitable for painting not only walls, but also ceilings.

Advantages of water-based paints

Types of paints described

The properties of the water-based paint for the ceiling surface depend on the type, which, in turn, depends on the base.

Table 1. Varieties of water-based paints.

Acrylic polymer emulsionLong service life, durabilityImpervious to steam and gases (this property can also be used as an advantage), high cost

Acrylic polymer with latex additionSame properties as acrylic water-based emulsions, also painted surfaces can be washedHigh cost, can crack in a cool room

Silicone resin emulsionCan be applied to any surface, hides irregularities up to 2 mm, vapor and gas permeable (this may be a disadvantage), suitable for any room, including kitchen and bathroom; the painted surface is washableThe most expensive of all water emulsions

All water-based paints are united by a water-dispersed base. The term "dispersion" itself means that water does not dissolve other substances, forming a single mixture, but dilutes the composition of the paint, penetrating between other particles. Thanks to various additives, manufacturers are trying to change some properties.

Water-based acrylic paint for ceilings "Builder"

Silicone paints have practically no drawbacks. The only drawback may be vapor and gas permeability if reinforced concrete is painted. After a while, the metal will begin to rust, and rust spots will appear on the ceiling. Before painting reinforced concrete with silicone paint, the metal must be protected.

Reference! Today, silicone water-based emulsions with anti-corrosion additives have appeared on the market.

If the budget allows, choose a silicone emulsion. Otherwise, use it only in the toilet and bathroom. And remember: after drying, silicone paints give a glossy surface.

Silicate paints are inexpensive, but not suitable for the bathroom or kitchen. For such premises it is better to stay on acrylic paints. True, due to vapor and gas impermeability, they cannot be applied to fresh plaster until it is completely dry. Suitable paint for the ceiling in living rooms.

The ceiling, covered with acrylic water-based emulsion, can be washed, but infrequently and carefully. If latex is added to the paint, then the ceiling can be washed many times and even with a brush. The paint is ideal for painting the ceiling in the kitchen.

Characteristics of water-based paints according to GOST

According to GOST 19214-80, the water emulsion must have certain characteristics, which are given in the table below.

Decoding of GOST parameters

When choosing a water-based paint for the ceiling, professionals advise you to pay attention to the parameters below.

Note! If you decide to tint yourself, tint 10% more than the estimated paint consumption. The paint of the desired shade will remain in stock for the “light” painting (updating) of the ceiling in the future.

Razbel of the main color (proportions are shown on the example of VD-AK-115 color scheme from the manufacturer Syvelovskie paints - paint and varnish factory LLC)

The water emulsion is made on a water basis. One of the properties of water is freezing at zero degrees. The paint loses its properties after freezing, so do not buy it in unheated warehouses and markets.

Cost matters. The consumption of expensive paint is often lower than cheap paint. Savings in painting partially offset the high cost.

Ceiling preparation for painting

The preparation of the ceiling surface takes place in several stages.

Step 1. Surface cleaning. The ceiling may have previously been painted or whitewashed, so it needs to be cleaned. The whitewashed ceiling is moistened with water, applying it to the roller and rolling the surface with it. Then they take a spatula and scrape off the old layer, after which the surface is washed again with a sponge.

To remove the old water emulsion, you should:

Often, cleaning from an old water-based coating comes down to simply scraping off damaged areas with a spatula.

Reference! Rust stains on a reinforced concrete ceiling can be removed with a 5% solution of copper sulphate.

Step 2 Surface leveling. The ceiling is leveled with putty using a spatula. At the same time, all cracks, cracks, small depressions or recesses are hidden on the surface.

Step 3 Surface primer. The puttied surface must be primed, which prevents the high penetration of the paint, and the degree of hiding power will increase. It is recommended to choose a primer from the same manufacturer as the paint.

Coloring process

When the surface is ready for painting, you can proceed to the actual process.

To get started, check out these essential tools:

  • long pile roller for painting the main surface;
  • a bath where the paint roller will roll out;
  • brush for painting joints and seams;
  • thin brush for correction.

Important! If you do not roll the roller, the paint will be applied unevenly.

When painting, follow the rules of application. If there is one window in the room, then the first layer is applied parallel to it from one blank wall to another. The second layer is applied perpendicular to the first, in the direction from the window to the opposite wall. If there are two windows in the room, then the layers are applied perpendicular to each other, and each time - from the window to the blank wall.

Important! It is better to apply two thin layers of paint than one thick one. Less consumption, paint lays down better.

You should start painting from the joints of the corner that is farthest from the entrance to the room. It is necessary to start painting the joints with a brush, a strip no more than 5 cm wide is painted over. Then the surface is rolled with a roller.

Note. For a water-based emulsion, a roller with a long pile is used, since the paint bubbles on the foam rubber, and the short pile will not capture enough paint.

Between the application of layers should take at least 8 hours for the paint to dry completely. The paint should dry under natural conditions, without the use of electrical appliances.

Each layer is applied quickly, as the freshly applied paint will stand out next to the already dried one.

You can paint the ceiling with water-based paint yourself. By following simple rules, you can achieve excellent results. Properly selected water emulsion for the ceiling will provide an aesthetic appearance of the surface, practicality in use and durability.

Video - Painting the ceiling with a plinth with water-based paint

This is the question we often ask ourselves when building our home or going to make repairs in it. However, I will immediately note that you can’t answer it unambiguously. It all depends on the material and qualities of the base, the purpose of the room and the design of its interior.

How to evaluate ceiling paint

When ceiling paint is mentioned, in most cases concrete flooring comes to mind. But in fact, the base surface can consist of different materials.

For example, from plaster, wood and its products, drywall, ceiling wallpaper or fabric, etc. And for all these materials, you should choose coloring compositions that are appropriate in quality.

It should also be taken into account that the premises have different purposes. Therefore, LMB for them must be chosen based on this.

Ceiling paint should be judged against the following criteria:

  1. Economy of spending.

  1. Coverage level. That is, the ability of the composition to fully hide the previous layer at a minimum of its costs.

  1. masking effect.
  2. The degree of moisture resistance. This characteristic is important for wet rooms.
  3. Volumetric paint.
  4. Her cost.

Coating appearance

When choosing a ceiling paint, first of all determine what will be a priority for you - the visual perception of the coating or its special properties.

In the first case, you must take into account that the color coatings differ in the visual effect they create.

  1. Glossy compositions give a strong shine to the facing. They look great on ceilings that have a significant area. Due to their high reflectivity, they visually expand the space.
    However, the gloss visually highlights and emphasizes all the irregularities and defects of the base. Based on this, if you are not sure about the quality and evenness of the ceiling, then you should not use such paint.

  1. Matte paints create a coating that does not shine, that is, it practically does not reflect light. Such compositions are able to moderately hide the irregularities and defects of the ceilings.
    Matte paints can be used for ceilings of all types of rooms. The resulting surface looks very aesthetically pleasing.
  2. Semi-gloss finishes are a compromise between the first two categories. The coating they create is shiny, but moderate.

  1. Textured paints for walls and ceilings.

In their composition, in addition to coloring pigments, there are additional ingredients:

  • these components can be a variety of fillers made of mineral fibers, polymeric and natural chips, imitating various natural textures and textures;
  • such compositions are able to mask significant defects in the base, due to the fact that they are applied in relatively thick layers.

When choosing paint for the ceiling, please note that it is highly undesirable to cover it with an oil composition. After it dries, it forms a completely air- and moisture-proof coating. This will provoke a slow destruction of the base, since the ceiling will not "breathe".

Why you should choose water-based paints for ceilings

For interior design, water-based paints and varnishes are most suitable. I'll explain why.

The advantages of such compositions

  1. It is possible to cover bases made of all types of materials with water-based paints. It is undesirable to do this only with metal, since water can provoke corrosion of the base.

  1. Such compositions are the most environmentally friendly and do not contain harmful substances. When painting the ceiling, there are no persistent sharp and unpleasant odors that cannot be weathered for several days.
  2. To remove the old water-based coating from the plane of the ceilings, there is no need to use solvents or cleaners. It is only necessary to moisten the surface and after 7-10 minutes the paint can be removed with a spatula.

  1. In most cases, aquatic types of coatings are produced in white, the so-called "base" color.

As needed, you can buy a variety of colors for them in all colors and tones:

  • thanks to this, you can recreate any of the shades of the coating. This circumstance makes the design of the ceiling very convenient.
  • white ceilings are the most common and are considered classic. However, now their color finish is gaining more and more popularity. It increases the aesthetics of the interior, of course, if the tone of the coating is correctly chosen and accents are made.

Painting in terms of aesthetics, at least, does not lose to other ceiling design options. This cladding has a very low price. Due to this, painting is almost always cheaper than other finishes.

Types of water paints

There are plenty of options for water-based paints and varnishes. Therefore, you can choose a suitable analogue for any conditions of the room and design.

Probably, there is not a single person who does not know that there is such a coating as water-based paint or, in a simple way, water-based paint. However, not all of us imagine that such coatings may differ in their composition and technical characteristics.

Therefore, I will explain the following to you.

  1. In fact, the emulsion is a dispersion (homogeneous) system. It consists of any two liquids that cannot mix at the molecular level. In other words, it is a liquid that is saturated with drops of another liquid that are insoluble in it.
  2. If we talk about paints, then their emulsion types are a physical mixture of water, which acts as a dispersed medium, and polymer resins, which play the role of a dispersed phase (a kind of suspension).
  3. The main features and characteristics of the emulsion depend on the material used as the dispersed phase. Based on this, it is more correct to call such coloring compositions water-dispersion.

The same water emulsion

Water-based paint (water-based paint) is made on the basis of the dispersed phase of polyvinyl acetate (PVA). She is the ancestor of all water-dispersion coatings, because the production of such compositions began with her.

Polyvinyl acetate water-based paint quickly became in demand due to its very low cost. And the fact that it was even easier to wash off the coating than to apply it, only exacerbated the success of the material.

However, such paints have several significant disadvantages:

  1. The coating has a very short period of operation - 1-3 years.
  2. From exposure to the rays of the sun, the paint turns yellow.
  3. Water emulsion non-moisture resistant. From waterlogging, mold starts on it, and stains form. Ultimately, she crumbles.

Based on the shortcomings listed above, many users began to abandon the use of water-based paint. Manufacturers have begun to develop water-based paints with improved characteristics.

Modern water-based polymer formulations

As a result, coatings based on polymers were developed: acrylic, latex, polyurethane and silicone. They are not afraid of exposure to ultraviolet radiation and water.

By improving water-based paint with its excellent technical characteristics, polymers have given it the opportunity to rise to a much higher consumer level:

  1. At the moment, water-dispersion paints are not only a material for covering the ceiling. With their help, you can effectively decorate the premises and not only in the segment of low-budget repairs.
    Therefore, users often use this particular type of cladding, while harmoniously combining several tones of paint in the interior of rooms.
  2. Coatings based on water-polymer emulsions have good elasticity. They can be both glossy and matte.

  1. These coatings are not very easy to remove from the base during subsequent repairs. However, this is often not necessary, because the coatings are durable.

The main advantage that hasacrylate ceiling paint, consists in the fact that the coating created by it can be cleaned using household detergent compositions.

Peculiarities:

  1. Due to the increased elasticity, such a composition fills all the microscopic cracks and pores of the base.

  1. Therefore, acrylic water-dispersion paints are very economical. When the ceiling is well prepared for finishing, one layer of paint coating is often enough.
  2. 1 liter of acrylic paint is enough to cover 6 m² of surface.

Polyurethane and silicone water-dispersion paints are especially valued:

  1. When applied, they make it possible to mask visible cracks and other minor defects in the ceiling.
  2. The coating they create can be both washed and cleaned with abrasive compounds.
  3. It is fire resistant and has good resistance to mechanical stress.
  4. Among other things, silicone and polyurethane paints are moisture resistant. Therefore, they are the best choice for ceilings in wet rooms.
  5. It is worth warning that these two types of water-dispersion paints are the most expensive among their analogues.

All types of water-based polymer paints and varnishes are vapor-permeable and non-toxic. These characteristics are especially important for living rooms.

Special paints for ceilings

Often, amateur builders ask themselves the question - what is the difference between ceiling paints and wall counterparts. I can answer right away - there are no special differences between them.

The vast majority of water-dispersion compositions are universal. Often they are labeled as "interior", in other words, their purpose is to paint the ceilings and walls inside the premises.

If you see a can in the store that says "ceiling paint", it will only mean that the composition is a little thinner. This is necessary so that its application with a spray gun is more convenient.

In addition, such compositions have a high degree of whiteness. On buckets and cans, this is what is written: “the paint is super-white.” These materials are tinted worse and are used only for finishing ceilings.

Coloring compositions for a wooden base

Wood and its products (boards, decorative beams, plywood, OSB, etc.) are often used for ceiling cladding. It can also be painted with water-dispersion paints.

However, such coatings completely cover the natural texture and texture of wood. This circumstance is not to the liking of all of us. This situation belongs to the area of diversity of our aesthetic tastes.

For example, in the kitchen, wooden ceilings covered with light paint look very good.

Alkyd paints and varnishes for wood

  1. Wood has a high absorbency. To level it, the base should be primed before painting. However, the cost of water-dispersion coatings for wood is still more than for plasterboard, plaster or concrete.
  2. Dark woods are difficult to paint over.

Based on all this, the best option is to use alkyd paint for wooden ceilings. It has a high level of opacity. In addition, most of the brands of alkyd materials are 2 in 1 coatings. For example, primer paint or antiseptic paint.

Before purchasing the composition, make sure that it is intended for staining wood specifically. There are many varieties of paints based on alkyd resins. However, PF enamels are most often used for wood. They include pentaphthalic varnish.

In addition to pigments and colors responsible for the color of the paint, they may contain the following additives:

  • nacre;
  • quartz chips;
  • marble flour, etc.

In the photo - multi-colored alkyd paints.

These components make it possible to create additional decorative effects.

Alkyd paints, as a rule, are already painted in some color and are completely ready for use. They have the widest range of tones and shades. They are juicy and bright, which makes it possible to recreate contrasts and accents.

Alkyd finish is durable, it is not afraid of the sun and moisture. Therefore, such a coating can be used to veneer wooden ceilings not only in residential premises, but also on the terrace, open veranda, summer kitchen, and attic.

Tinting and impregnating compositions

Wooden ceilings are fundamentally different from other foundations - it is best not to mask their natural texture, but rather to preserve and emphasize it.

That is, when painting wooden ceilings with your own hands, it is best to prefer transparent paints that have a tinting effect.

There are several varieties of such paints and varnishes:

  1. The most popular now are decorative azures, as well as impregnating varnishes. Their main function is to protect the tree from decay.. Only secondarily do they play a decorative role.
    Such coatings leave the texture of the wood visible, the surface of the base is only tinted. At the same time, the coating has a gloss, it is tactilely silky and smooth.

  1. A variety of colored solvent-based alkyd varnishes are also used to finish wooden ceilings. These translucent compositions create a protective film on the substrate having good strength. It varies in terms of gloss.

  1. There are also glazing impregnations on a synthetic or water basis. In fact, these are stains.

They penetrate deep into the wood and color the fibers of the base:

  • with their help, cheap wood becomes like valuable species - oak, rosewood, walnut, mahogany, etc .;
  • if the ceiling was sheathed with an expensive type of wood, then the stain will only emphasize its texture and texture. After glazing, the base can be coated with a glossy, semi-gloss or matt varnish according to your desire.

Rating: 9 best ceiling paints

Below I present to you the 9 best paints in different categories that can be purchased in Russia.

Matte Best Ceiling Paint

The highest quality brand of matte paint is Dulux "Magic White". I immediately warn you that I mean material made directly in the UK. The company's plants in Russia cannot always produce the highest quality products.

So:

  1. This paint has excellent light absorbing properties. They make it possible to almost completely hide all small defects on the ceilings.
  2. The material has a high level of hiding power. Two of its layers are enough to make the surface of the base look “one hundred percent”.
  3. In addition, the material has: environmental friendliness, low consumption per square meter, a wide range of tones, the possibility of applying to an unprepared base, ease of maintenance.

Based on all of the above, it is not surprising that this paint has become so popular.

The only negative of the English paint Dulux "Magic White" is its high cost. It is approximately 3100 rubles. for 10 l.

Best Gloss Compound

Dufa "Superweiss" - the best glossy composition.

Of the glossy paints, the German paint Dufa "Superweiss" is the most popular.

This ceiling paint is valued for the following qualities:

  • flawless whiteness;
  • silky gloss;
  • high level of hiding power;
  • coating service life;
  • strength.

Most of us like glossy finishes. They emphasize the purity of color and visually expand the space. Because of this, Dufa "Superweiss" is often used to paint the ceiling of small rooms.

The manufacturer of this brand also produces decorative materials that recreate spectacular patterns on the basis. Thanks to this, you can not only work with the tones and shades of the coating, but also create visual illusions, original textures on the ceilings.

The approximate cost of Dufa "Superweiss" paint is 3300 rubles / 10 liters.

The best semi-gloss material

Polish paint "Sniezka-Eko" is very surprising with the best quality / cost ratio. It is suitable for almost all types of substrates and has an excellent level of coverage.

"Snezhka" makes it possible to combine surfaces with different textures. For example, this is necessary when installing suspended ceilings from plasterboard. This paint does not have high moisture resistance, however, it is environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic. This composition is easy to tint to the tone and shade you need.

I want to warn about the minus of this paint. Its practical consumption per square meter is almost 2 times higher than the manufacturer claims.

The approximate cost of "Sniezka-Eko" coverage is 1400 rubles. for a 10 liter bucket.

The best polyvinyl acetate paint

"TEX-profi" - the best water-based paint.

Paint "TEX-profi" refers to the type of classic water-based compositions based on polyvinyl acetate. In other words: it is cheap, spreads easily and almost does not smell. It is possible to tint the coating according to the TEX company catalog.

The main disadvantages of this paint:

  • high material costs;
  • increased requirements for the base;
  • not very good hiding power, the coating has to be distributed in several layers in order to get a high-quality result.

When choosing the composition of "TEX-profi", consider the features of caring for the coating. It, like all other water-based PVA paints, is easily washed off with ordinary water. Based on this, you will not be able to clean the lined ceiling.

The approximate cost of "TEKS-profi" is 1600 rubles. for a 9 liter bucket.

Highest quality silicone material

The German company Caparol produces the best silicone paint under the brand name "CapaSilan".

After drying, silicone materials easily mask or even eliminate small bumps, cracks and roughness on the base. Thanks to its tightening properties, CapaSilan paint can hide cracks up to 2 millimeters wide.

The composition has good hiding power and, under certain conditions, even one layer is enough for excellent staining. The created coating is easy to clean. It practically does not get dirty, because it has water and dust repellent properties.

The approximate cost that Caparol "CapaSilan" silicone paint has is 3900 rubles. for a 10 liter bucket.

The best acrylic paint for ceilings

The Rostov manufacturer "Empilis" produces the best water-dispersion acrylic paint "Oreol-Discount". It perfectly lays down on the bases from any materials, forming a uniform opaque covering.

Most of the matte compositions have a high level of hiding power. Especially when the composition is white, pastel or terracotta. "Oreol-Discount" will not be an exception.

After its application, this paint dries faster (1.5 times) than analogues from other manufacturers. The cover is easy to clean and wash.

Of the minuses, the following can be noted. The material costs announced by the manufacturer are often exceeded in practice.

The approximate cost of "Oreol-Discount" is 900 rubles. for a bucket of 13 liters.

The best latex composition

The Finnish company Tikkurila has been associated with the Russian consumer for many years with the definition of "high quality" when it comes to most types of coatings.

Latex paint Tikkurilla "Euro-7" has the following advantages:

  • coating durability;
  • color purity;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • wide possibilities of staining with colors;
  • resistance to solar ultraviolet;
  • good specifications.

I warn you right away: a high-quality product means real Finnish Tikkurila paint. The plant near St. Petersburg does not always produce such an ideal material.

The approximate cost of Tikkurilla "Euro-7" is 2800 rubles. for a 9 liter bucket.

The best silicate paint for ceilings

Russian-German silicate paint "Ceresit CT-54" was originally intended for external, that is, facade work. But it can also be used indoors - for ceilings and walls. The material has environmental friendliness, high hiding power, antifungal qualities, durability and ease of maintenance.

This paint is demanding on the quality of base preparation. In the best way, it lies on the plaster.

The approximate cost of "Ceresit CT-54" is 3300 rubles. for a 15 liter bucket.

Great Super White Ceiling Paint

Paint "Expert Washable" is one of the materials produced by the Russian company DEKART. The coating created when using it looks dazzling snow-white.

The manufacturer's instructions highlight the following paint properties:

  • it is not toxic;
  • dries very quickly;
  • practically does not smell;
  • over time, does not lose its original color, does not wear out and does not crumble;
  • Looks great in both glossy and matte finishes.
  • suitable for all types of bases.

Tinting this paint is quite difficult - the result is often unsuccessful. Based on this, the composition is best left basic - white.

The approximate cost of "Expert Washable" is 850 rubles. for 14 kg.

Conclusion

Now there is a wide choice of types and brands of paints that can be used for finishing the ceiling. You just have to choose the right composition that best suits your case.

After watching the video in this article, you will become more understanding in this topic.

One of the most popular finishing materials for interior design work is paint. There are a large number of them, and they all differ in type and properties. Each type has certain nuances of application. Has a number of such moments and paint for the ceiling. How to apply it correctly, what tools it is better to use for this and what you should pay attention to when performing work, will be discussed in this article.

Popular manufacturers offer a large number of different types of paints. They are all great for decorating a room: glossy, matte, water-based and acrylic, any of them will give the room a neat and well-groomed look. Each type of paint has its own advantages and disadvantages, which must be taken into account when choosing a material for finishing work.

For painting the ceiling, the following types of paints are used:

  • acrylic;
  • silicone;
  • water-based;
  • water-dispersion;
  • latex.

The choice of these varieties is associated with a large number of their advantages. They do not emit an unpleasant pungent odor, when applied they fit perfectly and dry quickly. If necessary, such paints can be easily washed off or cleaned from the painted surface. It is imperative to take into account the features of the room itself: high humidity, sunny side, etc.

Paint for the ceiling in the apartment: which is better

When deciding which paint to buy for the ceiling, you need to understand what result is planned to be obtained after painting. The ceiling can end up with a matte, semi-matte or glossy surface. The next step after that is to determine the material of the ceiling. This can be a concrete floor, drywall, wood or plaster.

When choosing a paint, take into account its resistance to abrasion and washing, color fastness to sunlight and mold. Equally important is the environmental safety for humans and the absence of an unpleasant odor.

Useful advice! When choosing paint for the ceiling, you need to take into account its adhesive properties. The higher they are, the more intense the coating will be after drying.

No less important is the indicator of hiding. It shows how many coats need to be applied to get a uniformly colored surface. The higher this indicator, the less paint consumption is required for coating.

What paint is best for a plasterboard ceiling

The material from which the ceiling is made has a great influence on the choice of paint.

Quite often, in modern apartments, plasterboard sheathing is used for these purposes. Then puttying work is carried out, and only after that the final stage is carried out - painting. When asked which paint is best for a plasterboard ceiling, the answer is unequivocal - water-based. It lays down well, creates a beautiful matte surface and is affordable. You can apply it both with a roller and.

Sometimes the ceiling is sheathed with wood. This material has certain requirements for coating, so quite often professional craftsmen are invited to paint it. At the same time, the price of painting the ceiling with water-based paint includes pre-treatment with special means.

Glossy and matte ceiling paint

Glossy paints allow you to get a smooth mirror ceiling, which, after drying, create a flat surface. The main advantage of a glossy ceiling is a visual increase in the size of the room. Therefore, this type of paint is great for rooms with low ceilings and small apartments. The ceiling is easy to care for, it washes well, in addition, dirt and dust do not adhere well to the glossy ceiling.

Despite the presence of many advantages, glossy ceilings have a number of significant disadvantages. To apply such paint, a perfectly flat surface is required, since when applying glossy paint for the ceiling, all irregularities and depressions will be clearly visible. If the ceiling does not have a perfectly flat surface, then this type of paint should not be chosen.

The advantages of matte type paints include the absence of reflective properties. Thanks to this, they perfectly hide the existing defects. Matteness is achieved due to the porosity of the resulting structure, it is because of this that this surface is more polluted, and it is washed off worse. In this regard, matte paints are not used for the ceiling in the kitchen and other areas that require constant wet cleaning.

Useful advice! When deciding which paint to choose for the ceiling, consider the frequency of cleaning the surface and the method of cleaning (wet or dry). These factors affect the class of coating resistance to moisture and abrasion.

Acrylic, latex, silicone or water-based paint: which is better for the ceiling

To decorate the ceiling in a residential or office space, you can use one of five types of paint. Each of them has a lot of advantages. Paints based on water or PVA fit well, and if necessary, they can be easily washed off with water. Paints based on silicone or latex allow you to get a smooth and beautiful surface. Let's take a closer look at each type.

Painting the ceiling with water-based paint

Most often, water-dispersion or is chosen for painting the ceiling. This is due to a number of advantages:

  • ease of use;
  • low cost;
  • great for any type of surface;
  • does not have a sharp unpleasant odor;
  • easily washed off with soapy water;
  • can be used to decorate the ceiling in the kitchen;
  • tolerates wet cleaning well.

To obtain antibacterial properties, antifungal components are added to the finished paint. Despite the fact that after painting a smooth and beautiful surface is obtained, the owner does not always choose this type of material, since it is necessary to prepare the ceiling for painting with water-based paint very carefully, which leads to additional time and money costs. Because of this, many choose a different type of material for painting the ceiling.

Water-dispersed paints are similar in their properties to water-based paints. They are perfect for all rooms in the apartment. Whitewashing the ceiling with water-based paint is not difficult, so it can be easily done on your own, without the involvement of specialists.

Acrylic ceiling paint

The second most popular ceiling paint is acrylic paint. Its cost is higher than water-based and water-dispersed analogues. This is explained by the presence of paint a number of advantages:

  • high abrasion resistance. This property allows you to frequently wash ceilings without fear that the surface will lose its color;
  • resistance to direct sunlight. This is especially important if the ceiling is multi-colored;
  • Great for use on uneven ground. The dense structure masks all cracks and depressions;
  • does not have an unpleasant odor.

Note! White acrylic paint for the ceiling is considered an ideal option for any interior. When using this type of paint, it must be taken into account that the material darkens when it dries.

A perfectly white and even ceiling can be obtained thanks to, which has a dense structure and masks cracks

latex paint

The basis of this paint is latex. Because of this, the cost of latex paint is much higher than acrylic and water-based paints. It has a number of advantages, among which we should highlight the resistance to abrasion. The ceiling painted with this paint is not afraid of constant washing. The coating obtained after drying is highly durable and beautiful. The paint does not emit an unpleasant odor and dries quickly.

She also has significant drawbacks, among which one can note instability to low temperatures, high cost and a tendency to burn out in the sun.

Silicone based paint

This type of paint perfectly tolerates the influence of external factors. He is not afraid of exposure to high humidity and direct sunlight. The coating obtained after dyeing is also resistant to abrasion. Many manufacturers of this type of paint guarantee the excellent appearance of the ceiling even after 5000 wet cleanings with a brush.

Silicone White Ceiling Paint is perfect for kitchens and bathrooms. The paint has no unpleasant smell, is easy to apply and dries quickly.

Note! The paint does not have a strong odor and tolerates moisture well, so it can be used when decorating the kitchen, bathroom and corridor.

The material has a high cost, but a long service life will save money on frequent cosmetic repairs.

For children's rooms, the company produces a special water-based paint for the ceiling, the price of which is higher than that of the rest of the range. This is due to the presence of silver ions in the composition of the material. This enhances the antibacterial properties of the paint and prevents mold.

Acrylic and water-based paint Dufa

The German manufacturer Dufa is deservedly considered one of the best in the modern construction market. From the series of ceiling paints produced by the company, acrylic and water-based types should be distinguished. These paints have good hiding power, are easy to apply, and have a fast drying speed. This results in a smooth matte surface.

If necessary, remove water-based paint from the ceiling, as a rule, a simple soapy solution is sufficient.

The ceiling painted with Dufa paint is not afraid of exposure to moisture and the sun, so you can safely do wet cleaning as many times as necessary. In this case, the appearance of the ceiling will remain the same.

The paint of this company can be used in any room. The disadvantage of this product is one - high cost. This makes it less affordable than products from other manufacturers.

Tex: Great Ceiling Paint

When choosing paint for the ceiling, you should carefully study the offers of Tex. The use of this material allows not only to solve the question of how to whitewash the ceiling with water-based paint without streaks, but also to prevent the formation of mold. This is due to the presence of antibacterial components in the composition.

The disadvantages of Tex products include a small hiding power. To get a smooth smooth surface, it is necessary to apply 2-3 layers of paint. This increases its consumption and acquisition costs, however, after painting, an ideal surface is obtained, on which no brush or roller marks are visible. The paint does not have a sharp unpleasant odor and is notable for its low cost.

Note! The ceiling painted with Tex paint does not tolerate frequent washing, so this material is not suitable for the kitchen.

Alpina: value for money

This brand offers quality and affordable products. Alpina ceiling paint allows you to get a smooth and even surface, subject to careful preliminary preparation. Otherwise, all surface imperfections will be visible.
The paint fits well, it does not have a pronounced unpleasant odor, it dries quickly. Such paint can be used throughout the apartment, and it perfectly solves the question - what paint to choose for a concrete ceiling.

A significant disadvantage is the low resistance to abrasion, which is why it is impossible to carry out frequent wet cleaning of the ceiling painted with this paint. In addition, it is necessary to correctly resolve the issue of which roller to paint the ceiling with water-based paint. An unsuccessful choice of tool will lead to a sad result.

Alpina paints combine an affordable price and high quality. However, for rooms with high humidity, they should not be used.

Water-based paint Marshall

Marshall products for ceiling decoration are not as popular as all other brands. This is due to the fact that the manufacturer is more focused on products for painting walls.

The company offered its own series of compositions for performing work on the design of surfaces, which, among other things, can be used to paint the ceiling by whitewashing. Both water-based paint and latex type of material are offered by the manufacturer in white. If necessary, a colorant is used to obtain the desired shade.

The paint itself does not have a strong odor, it dries quickly and has good adhesion. It is well suited for wet cleaning. However, often this should not be done, otherwise the ceiling will lose its former appearance. It is worth noting that the work requires careful preliminary preparation of the ceiling for painting with water-based paint.

Acrylic paint Ceresit

Ceresit offers a wide range of different types of ceiling paints, but acrylic is considered the best among the entire range. It does not have an unpleasant odor, fits well, has a high rate of hiding and the presence of antibacterial properties. The painted surface is easy to clean, easy to clean and does not lose its attractive appearance.

The disadvantage of this type of material is the need for mandatory preliminary preparation. Without this, the paint does not hold, and the ceiling coating is of poor quality. However, this material is well suited for work on mineral plaster. In this case, there is no need to clean the surface, but you can immediately start painting work.

The products of this brand are of high quality and good hiding power, Ceresit acrylic paint does not fade in the sun, does not crack and does not lose its appearance even after several years. Features of painting the ceiling with different types of paints

After the question of what paint to paint the ceiling has been resolved, it is necessary to select the appropriate tool and carry out preparatory work.

For coloring, you can use:

  • wide brushes;
  • paint rollers;
  • spray gun.

From the above list, a roller is most often used for painting work.

How to paint the ceiling with water-based paint without streaks with a roller

In order for the ceiling surface to turn out beautiful, even, without splashes and streaks, when choosing a roller, you need to consider:

  • handle length. The telescopic option is optimal. If there is no such opportunity to buy, choose a handle length of at least 25-40 cm;
  • manufacturing material. When choosing it, you need to pay attention to the quality of the pre-treatment of the ceiling. The worse it is carried out, the longer the pile of the roller should be. This will allow the paint to fill in any cracks, bumps, and crevices for a smooth, even surface. You should not choose rollers made of foam rubber or velor, when working with paint they give a lot of splashes, leave streaks. In addition, when working with such a tool, paint consumption increases significantly;
  • material density. The roller for water-based paint for the ceiling must have a good density. Checking this is very simple - you need to take the roller in your hand and squeeze it hard. If after that it returned to its original shape, then the density of the tool is good. If this did not happen, such a roller is not suitable for painting;
  • the presence of seams. The tool should not have a rough seam, otherwise stains and stripes will form on the ceiling;
  • pile. It should stay firmly in place and not fall out. If hairs remain on your hand when you run your palm over the roller, you do not need to choose such a tool for work. After painting, the villi will remain on the ceiling.

When choosing which roller to paint the ceiling with acrylic paint, the requirements listed above must be taken into account.

How to paint a ceiling with a spray gun

Quite often, in order to get a beautiful and even surface without streaks and streaks, an airbrush is used. This tool is suitable for all types of paints. If there is a choice - to paint the ceilings with acrylic paint with a roller or spray gun, it is better to choose the second option. It is more economical, faster and more convenient.

When choosing an airbrush, you need to build on your own needs and financial capabilities. For example, if you need to paint the ceiling yourself with water-based paint without streaks, as a rule, preference is given to more expensive and high-quality models.

When buying a tool, consider the following:

  • the best material for the case is an alloy of aluminum and nickel. It is desirable to have an anti-corrosion coating;
  • the holes in the body must be brass or aluminium. Teflon seals must be present. This material is resistant to chemical components of paints;
  • there are no special requirements for the material of the spray gun tank. The nylon tank will allow you to easily control the level of paint during the whitewashing process.

These are the main points that will help you choose the best spray gun for painting work. Also, in addition, you need to take into account the individual characteristics of painting the ceiling with water-based paint with your own hands: the size of the room, the quantity and quality of lighting in the room, the presence of other construction tools, etc.

The main stages of painting the ceiling

  • choice of paint type depending on the material of the ceiling and the desired color scheme;

  • choice of tools for painting work. At this stage, you need to decide whether to paint the ceiling with a roller or to speed up the process, you need to use an airbrush. You can invite professionals, but in this case, the price of preparatory work is included in the cost of painting the ceiling with water-based paint;
  • ceiling preparation for painting. The better the work is done, the more beautiful the surface will turn out. If the ceiling was previously painted, then you need to wash it with soapy water. If necessary, individual places are cleaned with a construction bar;
  • painting. When doing the painting yourself for the first time, you should carefully study the recommendations of experts who will tell you how to paint the ceiling with water-based paint correctly.

After some time after staining, it is necessary to carefully examine the surface. If necessary, the paint is applied again.

Do-it-yourself painting of the ceiling with water-based paint: video

Today, the Internet presents a large number of materials about painting the ceiling, the rules for choosing a tool and the preparatory stages. Watching a video on how to paint a ceiling with water-based paint with a roller will clearly help you understand how to do it yourself, as well as avoid common mistakes and get a high-quality result.

Ceiling paint is often used as a finishing touch to a ceiling surface. In this case, the result of the work largely depends on the choice of the coloring composition. High-quality ceiling paint, selected taking into account the purpose of the room and the characteristics of the processes taking place in it, will help to achieve not only the aesthetic appeal of the surface, but also get a practical, easy-to-care and durable coating.

Rules for choosing paint for the ceiling

If you need ceiling paint, which one is best depends on the features of the room and its purpose. In any case, the best ceiling paint is one that meets the following selection criteria:

  1. If you do not want to do repairs every year, then when choosing a coloring composition pay attention to its durability and the life of the coating.
  2. Deciding the better to paint the ceiling, consider the plasticity of the coloring mixture. The elasticity of the paint layer determines how much the surface will be protected from cracking during the drying of the paint mixture or shrinkage of the building.
  3. ceiling paint should give a coating that is easy to care for. It is important to take into account the ease of dry and wet cleaning. In rooms with high ceiling contamination, for example, in the kitchen, you need to choose paints that provide a coating that is resistant to mechanical stress and friction, because it is not so easy to wash grease and soot from the ceiling surface.
  4. Different types of ceiling paints create a coating with certain properties. Choose ones that cover minor imperfections in the foundation, apply easily, and give a smooth, even finish.
  5. When choosing paint for the ceiling consider the price of the product. The cost of paints ranges from $ 0.43-9.7 per liter. In some rooms, an inexpensive coloring mixture is quite enough, but if you want the coating to meet certain technical and aesthetic requirements, then you should not save.

Water-dispersion

If you don’t know how to paint the ceiling in a child’s room, then water-dispersion compositions are suitable for this for the reason that they are considered environmentally friendly, because they are made on the basis of water.
There are the following types of these mixtures:

  • polyvinyl acetate;
  • adhesive (not popular due to the short service life);
  • acrylic;
  • water-based.

When deciding which paint is better to paint the ceiling, pay attention to the advantages of water-dispersion compositions:

  1. Affordable price is one of the main advantages of these paints.
  2. The coloring mixture dries very quickly, in the process of drying and application does not emit a pungent odor.
  3. Expensive polyvinyl acetate compounds are resistant to mechanical stress and adhere well to the base.
  4. Fire safety is another advantage of the coloring mixture.
  5. Alkali resistance.
  6. Low abrasion.
  7. Some varieties are moisture resistant, so the coating can be washed repeatedly.
  8. Impressive service life.
  9. Vapor permeability.
  10. Ease of application and good coverage.
  11. Water-based ceiling paint suitable for application on drywall, wood, concrete, brick and stone substrates.

Among the shortcomings, it is worth listing the following:

  • in a damp room, bacteria and mold can multiply on the surface, however, to solve the problem, choose compounds with the addition of antifungal and antibacterial components;
  • as a result of operation at low temperatures, the surface is covered with cracks;
  • not suitable for application on metal, varnished and adhesive surfaces.

A water-based emulsion is distinguished by the presence of polymers in its composition. It also contains fillers - stranded, talc or cellulose. Water-based mixtures are often produced in white. To obtain the desired shade, pigments are added to the paint.

Important! Water-dispersion paints, even after drying, get your hands dirty when you touch the surface, and water-based mixtures for the ceiling do not leave noticeable marks when you touch the coating.

Oil and enamel

If choosing what paint to paint the ceiling, you paid attention to enamel, then you should talk about its features. This composition is based on varnish, solvents and pigments. Most often, cast-iron and steel bathtubs are covered with enamel. The main disadvantage of paint lies in the vulnerability to mechanical damage and cracking. The coating is easily scratched and chipped. In addition, the base under the coloring layer is completely devoid of natural air exchange.

Oil white ceiling paint is good because it gives a smooth glossy finish. When adding different pigments, the desired shade of the coloring composition is obtained.
Their advantages include the following:

  • high adhesion with the base;
  • fit well on the foundations of any type;
  • do not require preliminary priming of the surface for painting.

Important! The main disadvantage of oil paints is a sharp unpleasant odor that persists in the room for a month after painting.

Acrylic

When deciding which paint is best for painting the ceiling, pay attention to acrylic mixes. This is the most practical finishing option. Paints belong to the middle price category. Acrylic paints are included in the group of water-based substances.
They are divided into several subspecies:

  • water-dispersion acrylic;
  • styrene-acrylic;
  • mixtures with the addition of vinyl.

All of them are made on the basis of water and differ only in composition.
The advantages of acrylic mixtures include the following:

  1. Since there are no acetate solvents in the composition, there is no unpleasant odor in the room during application and drying.
  2. The surface under the paint layer breathes, which is very important for a wooden house. The exception is vinyl paints, which have low vapor permeability.
  3. Even when applied in one layer, the coating is quite dense and uniform.
  4. The paint hides minor defects in the base.
  5. The elastic film does not crack during vibration and shrinkage of the structure.
  6. The advantages include ease of application, resistance to ultraviolet and abrasion, compatibility with any bases.

latex

When deciding what paint to paint the ceiling in an apartment, it is worth studying the features of latex compositions. Depending on the polymers contained, the following types of latex paints are distinguished:

  • acrylic silicone;
  • acrylic;
  • acrylic polyvinyl acetate;
  • acrylic butadiene styrene.

Their advantages:

  • high elasticity;
  • withstand tensile loads well;
  • hides small cracks in the base;
  • the gloss level reaches 60%, but there are also matte dyes;
  • waterproof;
  • does not collect pollution;
  • high adhesion to the base.

silicate

This is a mixture of water dispersion, coloring pigments and liquid glass. Silicate solutions are divided into dispersion and two-component varieties.
Their advantages include all the advantages of water-based paints:

  • good air permeability of the coating;
  • high wear resistance;
  • absence of toxic components;
  • fire safety;
  • durability (the surface will last up to 25 years);
  • increased moisture resistance;
  • thanks to additives, the coating is not subject to damage by microorganisms and fungi.

Manufacturers

To decide how to paint the ceiling in an apartment, you should choose not only the type of mixture, but also a trusted manufacturer. There are many different coloring compositions on the construction market, but not all of them are popular. We will describe the most popular manufacturers of coloring mixtures.

Caparol

German paint for painting the ceiling of the Caparol brand is an environmentally friendly water-soluble mixture. They do not contain plasticizers and organic solvents.

Features of Caparol paints:

  1. The price of high-quality German paints is quite high, but their popularity does not decrease from this.
  2. The long service life compensates for the high cost.
  3. Resistance to mechanical stress and abrasion.
  4. Can be washed using any detergent.

Tikkurila

Don't know which ceiling paint to choose? Pay attention to Tikkurila brand products. This Finnish company has been making paints and varnishes since 1862. The company's product range includes many types of ceiling paints suitable for different surfaces.
Their advantages:

  • low material consumption (120 grams per square meter);
  • good hiding power;
  • the presence of antiseptic components;
  • suitable for places with high humidity;
  • rich color palette;
  • high performance;
  • Tikkurila paints are characterized by saturation and brightness of shades;
  • easy to apply, adheres well to the base;
  • setting speed - 35 minutes, and complete drying - up to three hours;
  • environmentally friendly, without a strong smell.

Important! The only drawback of Tikkurila coloring mixtures is their high price. But it pays off with a long service life.

Sniezka

Under this brand, several companies that are located in different countries are united. The main office is located in Poland.
Painting the ceiling with Snow is beneficial for many reasons:

  • the coloring compositions of this brand are hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly;
  • the coating is resistant to temperature changes;
  • moisture resistant;
  • the surface under the paint layer breathes;
  • allowed to wash;
  • abrasion resistance.

Important! The most affordable coloring composition in terms of price is Ultra Belle on an acrylic basis. But the matte finish does not have an impressive service life.

Everyone who makes repairs on their own is faced with the question of choosing tools and materials. Hardware stores offer the consumer a huge selection, including paints for the ceiling. By what criteria to evaluate products and what is the best paint to buy?

Ceiling paint - which is better?

Criteria for choosing paint

  • in what price category is the purchase possible;
  • whether the ceiling requires wet cleaning and whether it is in a dry or damp room;
  • whether it is required to hide the defects of the painted surface or is it perfectly flat;
  • whether design tasks have been set (for example, to expand the space due to the color and texture of surfaces);
  • whether there are adverse environmental factors in the room (for example, splashes of grease in the kitchen).

Based on this, it will be easier to choose the appropriate option from the general variety of colors.

In appearance, the paints are:

  • matte;
  • glossy;
  • semi-gloss;
  • textured.

According to the properties, there are also waterproof and ordinary. The former are suitable for areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. The bathroom has constantly high humidity, and the kitchen often requires wet cleaning of the ceiling due to the appearance of soot or drops of fat on the surface.

The most suitable type of paint for the ceiling

It is worth immediately clarifying that for surfaces such as the ceiling, water-based paint would be the best solution. There are water-based and water-dispersion mixtures on the market. They differ in that the former are not moisture resistant, i.e. the surface painted by them is not suitable for wet cleaning. The second paint will not dissolve during wet cleaning. There is also oil paint, but it lays down in a very dense layer and does not allow air to pass through, which can subsequently lead to the destruction of the surface. Unlike oil, the water-based mixture perfectly passes air. It is fire resistant and non-toxic, odorless. It also dries quickly in work (from two hours), is easy to apply, and lasts a long time. Importantly, water-based mixtures can be tinted in any shade. They are sold mostly in white.

Any buyer can choose a tone for coloring and get a variant in color right in the store. This is very convenient when solving certain design problems.

Properties and technical characteristics of types of paints

  1. silicate. These are suspensions of various components in an aqueous solution of alkali metal silicates. These mixtures have high air and vapor permeability, are resistant to UV rays, are environmentally friendly, and have fire retardant properties. Dirt does not adhere well to surfaces painted with silicate mixtures. Inexpensive. Of the minuses, one can single out the fact that they are not waterproof, not very resistant to abrasion. Also, when working with silicate compounds, an insoluble precipitate appears after a day, which does not imply their storage or use after more than 24 hours.

  2. mineral. Here, crushed minerals are used as a pigment. By the name, you can judge the environmental friendliness of these mixtures. The main advantage is their air permeability, which prevents the surfaces from getting wet and, as a result, their destruction. The technical qualities of these mixtures include hiding power, plasticity, hydrophobicity. The main disadvantage is the fact that the surface covered with a mineral composition does not imply either dry or wet cleaning. But for the price, this is probably the most affordable option.

  3. Polyvinyl acetate. In other words, these are mixtures based on the well-known PVA. When working with these paints, a glossy surface is formed. The mixture lays down tightly and rather plastically, however, it will not be possible to carry out wet cleaning on the surface. When water drops get in, stains remain, so such compositions are more suitable for ceilings in the living room.

  4. Acrylic. Acrylic resins act as a binding pigment. These mixtures are already more expensive than the previous ones, but in terms of their properties they are suitable for more surfaces. They are resistant to abrasion and moisture resistant, which means that dry and wet cleaning of the ceiling is possible. Also, these paints are resistant to fading, which is important in the case of bright colors. The surface when painted with acrylic mixtures will be matte.

  5. latex. The principle of these mixtures is as follows: while the particles are in a liquid state, they do not dissolve, but they do not stick together with each other. When the mixture is applied to the surface, the water evaporates over time, and the particles adhere more tightly to the surface and practically stick together with each other, forming a kind of film. Latex compounds are used for application to those surfaces that require high resistance to moisture and abrasion. After applying the composition, dust and dirt do not stick to the surface. Paints can be both matte and have a different degree of glossy sheen. To understand how glossy or matte the ceiling will turn out, you should pay attention to the number that is often present in the name of the paint. The higher the number, for example 20, the higher the gloss percentage. The price of latex mixtures will be higher than in previous cases, but this coating is durable and wear-resistant.

  6. With silicone additives. As a rule, silicone resins are added to latex mixtures. These emulsions are similar in properties to latex emulsions, with the only exception that they are even more resistant to abrasion. Such paints will be ideal for covering ceilings in the kitchen. In this case, wet cleaning and even brushing the surface will be possible. The high cost pays off in durability. Silicone mixtures, as well as latex, can be applied to all types of surfaces: plaster, drywall, structured wallpaper. They can be either matte or glossy.

Additional additives

In addition to the main characteristics, it is worth considering the following nuances when choosing a paint. If you plan to paint the ceiling in the bathroom, then you should look for a mixture with fungicidal additives to combat mold and fungi. Manufacturers often add various antiseptics to the mixture to protect against all kinds of microorganisms. Thixotropic properties will ensure a more even distribution of paint on the surface. Textural additives are intended to impart decorative properties to the surface. It is a kind of fine powder that creates a rough surface both to the touch and visually. Manufacturers also add matting additives. However, paints with these impurities will be even less resistant to external influences.

Paint consumption

The choice of paint is also affected by the amount of emulsion spent during use. As a rule, the consumption of the mixture is indicated on the bank by the manufacturer. Do not forget that when working with different surfaces, the amount of paint spent can be increased. So, when painting wallpaper or plaster, the total cost of the mixture will increase by about 15%. To understand how much emulsion you need to buy, the table below is given.

Table. Consumption of popular types of paint when painting a flat surface with a roller in one layer.

Variety of surfaces and staining rules

Working with water-based paint is very convenient and simple. However, there are a few rules to keep in mind while working. Moreover, various kinds of surfaces affect the choice of material and consumption. Also, if the surface is not properly prepared for painting, material consumption may increase significantly or the color rendition will be distorted.

  1. Most often, water-based paint is used for smooth surfaces. However, plaster can be decorative and have roughness. In this case, the consumption of paint increases and preference should be given to those emulsions that have high covering properties.
  2. It is worth paying attention to such an indicator as the viscosity of the paint. He talks about the ratio in which the emulsion can be diluted with water. Often, water-based paints are diluted with water during operation so that the applied layer is as thin as possible. However, if the viscosity of the mixture is low, this is strictly prohibited, otherwise you will have to apply an extra layer.
  3. It is better to paint in daylight. It is this type of lighting that allows you to see all the nuances of the work. This is especially true if the work is carried out with white or light paint, which may not be visible under electric lighting.

Step by step instructions for painting the ceiling

Step 1. First, the surface is completely cleaned of the previous coating. If there are seams on the ceiling, you need to tap them for the presence of loose plaster and putty, if any. All voids must be well primed and filled with putty. Using a screwdriver or any narrow object, check all joints between the ceiling and walls for voids. If necessary, they are also filled with putty. In the presence of large and wide cracks, they can be repaired with a reinforcing mesh.

After the ceiling has been leveled as much as possible, a primer should be applied to its surface. It is applied in two layers - the process is conveniently carried out with the help of a brush-brush. The primer dries for at least 10 hours.

Step 2. After the ceiling is skinned with fine sandpaper, so that the surface is perfectly flat. Otherwise, after painting, all defects and irregularities will come out.

Step 4. The work is carried out with a roller with a long pile. Before applying paint to the ceiling, the roller must be rolled out to get rid of excess mixture.

Step 5. Next, the first layer is applied very thinly. With a dense application, the paint may begin to bubble and the ceiling will have to be redone. The entire surface must be painted at one time until completely dry. Otherwise, the color transition will be visible. If, after applying the first layer, unpainted areas were found, then you should not take up the brush. Since water-based paint dries quickly, these fresh spots will be visible even after drying. All defects are corrected by re-applying the mixture.

Step 6. After the first layer has completely dried, the second one is applied. As a rule, the next layer can be applied after 2-3 hours. However, it is worth the drying time of the paint to look at the label. If the covering power of the applied material is not the highest, then it is possible to cover the surface for the third time. At the same time, the drying time of the second layer should be increased.

Step 7. It is also important to consider the direction of painting, otherwise all defects will be immediately evident. The first layer is applied perpendicular to the second, and the last - in the direction strictly from the window.

The choice of materials for repair can be dictated not only by criteria in terms of cost and quality. Many are trying to solve design problems. For example, gloss perfectly reflects light and visually expands the space. However, it is worth remembering that this kind of coating highlights all surface defects. A matte finish will hide any irregularities better, but a matte finish is not suitable for frequent cleaning. Therefore, different ceiling paints are often bought for the bathroom, living room and kitchen.
