Homemade bed made of logs. Bed made of wood with your own hands. Chipboard bed: step by step instructions

Today, furniture manufacturers use a fairly wide range of various materials, which significantly expands the choice of furniture designs. Glass, plastic, metal furniture for residential premises wins the love of the consumer. But there is still a high demand for naturalness, environmental friendliness and naturalness, that is, for wooden interior items. This is what log furniture is, which is very popular lately.

Today, like centuries ago, people are trying to choose the most reliable, safe and beautiful furniture for living quarters. Many new synthetic materials, decorative techniques and specific mechanisms have been invented that are used in furniture production. But natural wood is also highly valued. Most often, such species as oak, beech, walnut, birch, pine, alder, acacia, cherry, mahogany are used to create furniture.

Log furniture is considered an elite acquisition, because it has a large number of positive qualities:

  • high aesthetics - wooden surfaces have a luxurious look, unique texture and pattern. With their help, designers create truly "royal" interiors in ordinary city apartments and country houses. Wood goes well with many other materials: glass, metal, stone. We also note that the color schemes of natural wood are very diverse, which allows you to choose an option for any style of interior;
  • ecological cleanliness, naturalness, pleasant aroma. Logs do not contain unsafe substances in their composition, so wooden interior items are not able to provoke the development of allergic reactions, poisoning and other health problems in humans or pets. Species such as pine, spruce, fir have a positive effect on people with diseases of the respiratory system;
  • durability - natural wood demonstrates high strength, resistance to many negative environmental factors, therefore it serves for a long time without changing performance;
  • easy care - solid wood is undemanding in care, so it retains its original beauty for a long time. And if during the operation a scratch or chip appeared on the surface of the cabinet, it can be restored without much hassle;
  • versatility - wooden log furniture is relevant in almost any premise. The living room will look simply chic, the bedroom will be filled with comfort, and the nursery will be as safe and practical as possible with such decor.

There are also disadvantages to timber furniture, which is important to be aware of when choosing such interior items for a bedroom, living room or children's room. We describe them in detail below:

  • the ability to crack under the influence of high humidity in the room. Even with a good surface treatment of wood, it will remain sensitive to moisture. If there is no optimal humidity in the room, then the furniture may shrink or swell;
  • excessively high cost of wooden products. Often this fact scares off the buyer, forcing him to choose a more affordable analogue. In fairness, we add that the technology for the production of interior items from timber is complex, which is why they are expensive for buyers;
  • high weight - log furniture is not suitable for old houses with frame floors;
  • specific qualities - different types of wood cause different tactile sensations, associative thoughts in a person. For example, the natural smell of pine can scare one person away and attract another person.

Product types

Log furniture is very relevant for many purpose-built premises. In its manufacture, different types of wood are used, therefore, operational parameters may appear different.

Conventionally, experts divide all wood species used in the production of log interior items into two types:

  • solid wood: maple, oak, ash, walnut. Such breeds are relevant for the manufacture of furniture that experiences the highest load during operation. For example, bed frame, dining table top;
  • from soft wood: poplar, willow, pine, spruce, chestnut. These types of wood are used for the manufacture of decorative elements in the design of log furniture. For example, facades, carved decorations.

We also note that furniture made from solid logs will be more reliable, durable, expensive than options from glued beams.

The appearance of log furniture may also be different, which is a consequence of the use of different compositions to give the object a high resistance to impact:

  • painted - for the decoration of wooden furniture, various kinds of coloring compositions are used, which can completely cover the natural pattern of the tree or slightly shade it. This determines the external aesthetics of the subject in the end;
  • varnished (matte, glossy). Gloss effect lacquer allows you to add clarity and brightness to the wood pattern. Such surfaces are perfect for classic interiors. And matte wax gives the surface a special charm that is relevant for country, Provence and other areas of residential decor.

Where is it most commonly used

The use of logs made of rounded logs is relevant in many stylistic directions in the decor of residential premises, as it can be successfully combined with other materials, with many color shades in the decoration of walls, ceilings, and floors. But most often, such decor items can be found in rooms with decor in the following styles.

Room design direction Characteristic
Country Country is distinguished by the naturalness of materials, so log tables, chairs, beds, cabinets will perfectly fit into the premises of this style.
Provence Provence requires conciseness of forms, simplicity of color shades and naturalness of the materials used, which, by the way, corresponds to furniture made of rounded timber.
Loft The loft style is unusual and simple, practical and resists everything overly pompous and expensive. However, it is log furniture that is successfully combined with glass, brick, plaster, which are so often used in such interiors.
Classic With proper processing, natural wood furniture acquires a strict, conservative look, which is very important for classic living rooms and bedrooms.

No less relevant is log furniture for a garden house, gazebos in a summer cottage or a park. But leaving it for a long time in the open air is not worth it, as precipitation will affect the quality of the surface in a negative way.

You can complement the beauty of timber furniture with decorative elements made of natural rattan, glass or metal, leather.

Nuances of choice

Log furniture has a number of advantages. However, this rule applies only to those pieces of furniture that are made strictly according to technology using high-quality fittings and fasteners. Savings on components or protective coatings for logs can adversely affect the durability of structures, reduce their resistance to the negative influence of external factors. Therefore, you need to choose such interior items carefully, without haste, weighing all the pros and cons.

We describe the main factors that cannot be ignored when choosing wooden furniture:

  • cost - the process of creating furniture from logs is quite complex, painstaking and does not tolerate haste. Only if this condition is met, it can be argued that a log bed will serve for several decades in a row. That is why interior items of this kind cannot be cheap. A low price should alert the buyer, make him carefully examine the design for defects, familiarize himself with the accompanying documentation for the product (quality certificate, passport, assembly instructions, care);
  • dimensions - log interior items often have impressive dimensions, so they should not be selected for narrow spaces with poor lighting. In small rooms, they will look overly cumbersome and burden the space. And for large spaces, such furniture is just a godsend;
  • aesthetics of the surface - on the logs used in the manufacturing process of the furniture structure, there should be no knots, chips of the layer in the mass of the tree, and annual rings should be located as close as possible. These factors will indicate the high quality of the material used. If the bed still has such shortcomings, the price for it should be significantly reduced.

Taking into account these factors, it is possible to choose successful models of tables, chairs, beds or cabinets made of logs and profiled logs for a home or a summer residence.

If you visit any large furniture store, it will always have a wide selection of beds of various types and modifications. If you wish and have the opportunity, you can buy any, but it often happens that one or another option does not fit the existing interior of the house, or the bed is too large and bulky, or simply does not suit the quality and style of execution. In this case, there is a difficult, but sometimes the only way out: making a bed out of wood with your own hands.

materials

Since it is high-quality materials that are the key to the durability of furniture, if you choose them arbitrarily, there will be much more advantages from this. Of course, making a bed with your own hands will take much more time and effort than simply buying it or ordering assembly from professional furniture makers. However, personal choice and constant control over the quality of your creation will eventually bear fruit and pay off with a long service life of such an important piece of furniture made by yourself.

Choosing as a material wood mass, it must be borne in mind that it has a rather high price and certain difficulties in terms of preparatory work and the very process of making beds.

In the absence of proper experience in handling the array, it is better to choose simpler options, although any product created, for example, from solid pine or oak, will look very beautiful and differ in enviable strength.

A bed made of natural logs looks very impressive, but here there is both the difficulty of acquiring them, and the unreality of installing such a bed in small rooms.

Taking into account the specifics of working with an array, the most common in use are different types of lumber: it will be much easier to create a bed yourself from a bar or planed or cut boards.

The only nuance that you should pay special attention to when buying them is good drying: if the product was originally made from wet timber, when it dries, the structure will begin to creak or deform.

Shield bed- also inexpensive and a good option. Furniture panels are rather massive boards, which are glued together from separate parts of wood.

Such a product will delight with beauty and practicality, the strength of the shields allows even carving on them, but, as in working with solid wood, certain skills will be needed here: the specificity of furniture panels implies the presence of internal stresses that should be handled correctly in practice.

Fine wood fiber fraction (MDF)- an inexpensive and fairly durable material, which, with additional processing (for example, with varnishing), looks quite beautiful.

On sale you can find MDF boards both with and without a finished varnish coating, which will be a significant plus if the manufacturer plans to carry out the processing on his own.

Particleboard or chipboard- also a material familiar to many, which is easy to cut and process, however, it should be borne in mind that it is better to use it not for the manufacture of load-bearing bed structures, but for drawers, backs and decor elements. If the plate is already sold with lamination, you can save a lot of time.

Fittings for a future bed are better to purchase from durable steel than from aluminum. Aluminum elements are certainly much cheaper, but steel is much stronger, and it would be better not to save on this, but to take care of quality from all sides.

It is important to keep in mind that the metal fasteners will need to be tightened as the wooden base dries, and if the fasteners are steel, the bed will take on all the load at once, and there will be no problems with structural strength in the future.

Choose a size

First of all, it is important to determine the size of the future bed: the comfort of sleep and the availability of proper rest depend on them.

The optimal length of a bed can reach 200 cm, and the width should be selected, depending on individual preferences and physique.

By the way, the usual classification of beds (single, double and "one and a half") was once developed based on the parameters of width, not length, which should be especially taken into account when planning sizes and drawing up a drawing.

A single small bed can have a width of 90 and a length of 80 cm, which is optimal for the manufacture of children's models. You can also consider an option with dimensions of 100x100 cm, if the area of \u200b\u200bthe children's room allows. A bed of 150x150 or 150x190 cm is already close to the parameters of a one-and-a-half, however, the optimal dimensions for an adult are 150 cm wide and 190 cm long. You can also increase them if the room has enough space, and the bed will not look bulky in the overall picture.

When drawing up a drawing, it is also important to take into account the fact that the best bed length for a person of any age should always be 15 cm more than his actual height - with a margin, which will provide maximum comfort and freedom during sleep.

There is one more subtlety that must be taken into account when making a bed: the older the person, the higher it should be.

Of course, an important part of any bed is a mattress. It should be purchased in advance in order to plan all dimensions based on its parameters. A standard orthopedic mattress can be from 1.5 to 2 m, with a height of 25 cm. In extreme cases, you can also make it yourself - from foam rubber and other suitable materials.

Device

A simple bed of beams and boards can be made quite quickly, following a certain algorithm of actions.

For this you will need:

  • boards 2 pcs (dimensions 250x30cm) - for the side walls of the bed;
  • boards 3 pcs (dimensions 200x30cm) - front, back of the bed and headboard;
  • beams 5 pieces 4x4cm, length 200 cm - the supporting structure of the bed and its legs;
  • slats 27 pieces 150x4x2 cm;
  • self-tapping screws and other accessories, depending on the need;
  • varnish, "stain", building glue for wood.

You will also need a small standard set of tools: a screwdriver, an electric jigsaw, a hacksaw, a planer.

To clean the elements - sandpaper, preferably fine-grained, for measurements - a tape measure, for accurate knowledge of the dimensions of the corners - a square, a simple marking pencil.

Cutting a tree should be carried out slowly, having previously made markings on it with a simple pencil, or take a cutter and make marks with it. Usually, in the process of manufacturing elements, you have to make several of the same. In this case, the first part is first cut out, which will serve as a template, and all the rest will already be made based on its parameters.

When sawing, it is necessary to immediately clean it with fine-grained sandpaper.

All corners of the bed must be strictly straight, 90 degrees, therefore, measurements will have to be done often and carefully, and only then fasten the parts together. Otherwise, the bed will not be strong and will quickly break under the weight of the human body. All elements are first carefully glued with building glue and only after that they are securely attached to the tree using self-tapping dowels.

We should not forget to remove the remaining glue, because their presence will greatly complicate the subsequent processing steps.

After cutting all the details, you can proceed directly to the assembly and installation of the bed.

The location of the bars that perform the function of a support must be determined by dividing the length of the front and then the back wall by three. Write down the resulting number. Keep in mind that the mattress should always be at least 5 cm deep in the bed + necessarily another 2 cm (thickness of the rails) and + 4cm (thickness of the bars of the longitudinal elements). The final figure is 11 cm. It should be noted at the top of both walls of the future bed, front and back - there the bars for the main support will be fastened.

The bars are screwed on from the inside. When carrying out fastening, it is important to monitor the screws so that they do not “cut through” the surface of the product - in order to avoid damage to the aesthetic appearance of the bed. The length of the screws is usually calculated in advance.

After screwing the bars, 7 cm are measured (from the top of the board for the side parts) and a mark is made with a ruler and a pencil. The bars are screwed to the side of the bed with a retreat of 6 cm on each side. After that, 2 more small pieces of bars are vertically attached to the edge of the bars - with a gap of 20 mm to the edge of the board.

The headboard is mounted to the wall in front. All glued surfaces and edges are carefully smeared with glue. The blanks are glued as tightly as possible so that there are no cracks and unnecessary gaps.

The headboard is reinforced with several slats (usually three). The slats are glued with construction adhesive and additionally screwed. All finished elements are processed with a stain - this way they will acquire the desired color and shade. After staining, as usual, varnish treatment follows, which is recommended to be carried out twice.

After all the elements are ready, we proceed directly to the final assembly. We make a frame, fastening its parts with self-tapping dowels. Two bearing beams are laid on the support beams, previously screwed to the walls at the back and front - and fixed. To give the structure maximum stability, legs are additionally attached to the supporting bars - it is better to do this from the inside, for the purpose of aesthetics.

The supporting structure is ready and securely fastened and now it is possible to lay and screw the slats, leaving a uniform distance of 4 cm between them. The space between the walls of the bed and the slats should be at least 2 cm. Finally, the backrests are mounted, a mattress is placed on the bed and you can start using it .

Self-made podium

As you know, the catwalk bed in its many variants is becoming more and more popular in our country. Furniture craftsmen invent very interesting and practical ways to install just such structures in any place: from a large country house to an ordinary small-sized “Khrushchev”, where it can be very problematic to place a large amount of furniture. There are plenty of podium models, however, the most compact of them is exactly the one where there are several under-bed drawers for linen and other things.

Due to the fact that the presence of such boxes inside the structure can significantly free up the surrounding space, this version of the podium is the most popular among owners of small apartments and rooms.

Those who want to get a compact podium bed often ask how to make a simple model with drawers with their own hands.

Speaking about the simplicity of this model, a reservation should be made that we are not talking about a monolithic, but about a frame base, which must be as strong as possible in order to withstand the upcoming loads.

Linen drawers located inside the podium or under the bed have the disadvantage of constantly collecting dust, because they are located next to the floor. However, this drawback is usually not taken into account when there is no other way out, but there is a desire to save the surrounding space in the best possible way.

Despite the fact that such a model in everyday life is considered quite simple, a lot will have to be taken into account when planning. The floor has its own mechanics and certain properties, and the partitions of the bed will interact with it all the time. This is another reason why the frame structure must have an increased degree of strength.

For self-production of this version of the podium bed, it is better to use lumber wood materials. This will ensure the strength of the frame in order to avoid subsequent troubles, moreover, the strength of monolithic bars allows you to "bypass" possible problems with load distribution in the following way.

The spar is calculated by analogy with the design of the frame - the "ridge", which is usually installed on trucks designed for heavy weights.

This means that the basis of the frame must necessarily be a strong and thick beam, which will take all the loads emanating from the transverse beams, "splayed" in different directions.

For the manufacture of such a "ridge" it is better to take two large beams 100x50 in size. The remaining beams of the supporting structure are made of 100x100 bars. Other details can be made either also from wood (if time and financial resources permit), or from chipboard, which will go well with any kind of wood materials, provided that it will not be used for the load elements of the bed.

It should be remembered that particle boards, due to their peculiarity to delaminate, do not accept either alternating or concentrated types of load.

However, with a strong desire, you can make a podium bed on a frame completely from chipboard. It will be a panel structure, placed on a cross, which serves as the main support, with a complete absence of small details. The boards are installed "edge" on the floor and support the flooring from below. The main crosspiece with overlays takes the main part of the entire load.

Of course, the shield plates must be thick enough, at least 30 mm.

The drawers will fit inside, but this option has one significant drawback: due to the fact that it is impossible to arrange the cross in another way, half of the space under the bed will remain unused.

Of the two proposed options for a podium with drawers, you can choose any one that will be the most suitable and possible to manufacture.

How to make a wooden bunk bed?

A wooden bunk bed is a great option when it comes to how to arrange two beds in the nursery or free up as much space as possible for the child in the room. The cheapest and at the same time durable materials that can be used in the manufacture are boards and pine timber.

When calculating the amount of materials and drawing up a drawing, it is important to take into account the distance from the lower tier to the bottom of the upper one - its recommended value is 85 cm. This will provide a comfortable seat below not only for a child, but also for an adult.

Below are the main elements of a bunk bed with their standard sizes (one element):

  • vertical racks 38x76x1730 mm;
  • strengthening racks 38x76x1730 mm;
  • elements of the supporting structure (frame) 38x140x2030 mm;
  • headboard slats (bottom and top) 20x140x914 mm;
  • slats for the footboard (bottom and top) 20x140x914 mm;
  • plank in the center (ibid.) 20x90x914 mm;
  • side safety fence 20x90x1800 mm;
  • stair railings 20x90x1510 mm;
  • stair steps 20x64x482 mm.

The supporting frame is assembled from four pre-prepared boards. For the reliability of the frame, an additional bar is longitudinally glued to the board and screwed to it with screws.

The bars glued to the plank that supports the mattress longitudinally will act as a base on which the slats need to be laid across.

Railings for railings are made from a simple processed board, and stair railings are made from boards with the possibility of framing.

The places for fixing the steps must be designated in advance, and during assembly, make sure that the metal elements fixing them do not come into contact with the frame fastening fittings. The foot and head parts of the bed are fastened with screws - at the bottom with the supporting structure. Self-tapping screws from the edge should be filed.

The second tier is also assembled in a similar way, and the fence with a ladder is also attached. As for the fence, if there is a desire and time, it can also be made on the side of the wall. Treat the finished bed with stain and varnish, let it dry - and mattresses can be laid.

It is sometimes believed that using ordinary nails in the manufacture of furniture is already outdated and impractical, but this is not so. Nails can not only become the cheapest piece of furniture, but also facilitate the work of the carpenter, without requiring any preparatory actions in the form of drilling with a drill.

Probably, few people realize that ordinary pallets from building materials can be used as the basis for a solid wooden bed.

They win not only with their cheap price, but also with their good quality, because bad wood is unlikely to be used to transport and store heavy bricks.

In addition, over time, the use of such pallets for their intended purpose, the tree can sit down and dry perfectly, which is its undeniable advantage.

Pallets can be made more decent by sanding and connected to each other with long self-tapping dowels. To give them a minimal aesthetic appearance, they can also be painted and varnished. In order to make a full-fledged double bed, you need only four of these construction pallets, and from eight pallets or more you can build any kind of podium.

For the manufacture of bed legs, do not use chipboard: as already mentioned, this material, despite its widespread use, is not suitable for the manufacture of parts that can withstand a serious load. If you take this lightly and make the legs of the bed from wood chip material, at best they will delaminate, and the bed will constantly creak, and at worst they may simply not withstand the weight.

The bed itself is designed not only to support the mattress, but must also have properties that would allow the load to be evenly distributed between it and the bed frame. The boards on the bed should be laid freely according to the principle of lamellas, and the plywood shield for the mattress itself is already placed on top.

Lamellar boards are best laid transversely rather than longitudinally, because this is how they bend down slightly in accordance with the movements of the body.

Beautiful Bedroom Interior Ideas

For a children's room, there are a large number of ways to make a bunk ensemble, which may consist of more than just two beds.

For example, there are options in the form of transformers, when in the daytime, using a simple mechanism, the bed below easily turns into a desktop. If desired, it is also possible to make such a kind of two-story structure with your own hands.

For children of preschool and primary school age, it would be an excellent solution to make railings and stairs of beds from improvised means, or simply snags and small logs found in the forest, sanded and processed in the usual carpentry ways. Such an unusual interior will decorate the nursery, and will always bring joy to the child and the possibility of additional space for games.

A pull-out bed from the podium will be the best solution when you need to create a cozy interior space in a small room. In the daytime, it can be removed inside the podium, thereby freeing up space for receiving guests.

The solid frame of such a product, which is based on a ridge structure made of massive timber, will allow you to place a cozy office with a computer desk and shelves for books at the top of the podium. If you take care of the exterior finish of this option with high-quality laminate made from natural materials, the room will look just great, despite its small area.

A large bedroom in a country house is an excellent opportunity to place a luxurious double bed of any desired design there.

A bedroom with a carved bed always looks very attractive, and if you master woodcarving on your own, wide open spaces for creativity open up.

You can cut out figures of various animals or birds and attach them to the backs and foot of the bed, and if you want to carve patterns, high quality wood will do it.

By the way, cheaper materials, such as chipboard, are also not afraid of such work and are quite suitable for using an acceptable and simple carving technique.

Using pallets for building materials to make a bed, a real creative craftsman will surely be able to find uses for the holes in them.

The pallets themselves can be disguised, properly sanded and painted in some unusual color, and inside the holes you can place absolutely safe lighting for the bed in the form of LED lamps or lamps. They do not heat up and are quite suitable for such independent design.

If the bed is made in the form of a simple podium with a mattress lying on top, this also opens up huge scope for creative thought. After all, the head of such a bed can be arranged in any way: for example, get old boards from the pantry, wash them, varnish them on top, write something on them in an incomprehensible language, attach something to the wall at the head of the bed - and a mystical "budget" bedroom in the style handmade is ready.

Fans of everything warm and soft can buy several pillows of the same shape and color and also fix them at the head - you get a kind of panel with a touch of simple and cozy home humor.

Colored decorative pillows in large sizes can be attached to a metal pipe embedded in the wall using strong colored tapes. It is important to remember that feather pillows are not suitable for such purposes, due to the fact that they are quite heavy. For decorative design, pillows made of synthetic winterizer or holofiber are perfect.

A self-made double podium bed, not adjacent to the wall, can also become a space for creativity if, instead of traditional drawers, shelves with books are placed inside the podium. Books can be both real and fake, and if somewhere in the house there are old books with yellowed sheets lying around, then by filling the shelves with them, you can create an indescribable atmosphere of a truly vintage interior in the room.

Ordinary boards that have been lying in the shed for a long time should not be thrown away. They can also be used to create a wonderful rustic atmosphere by decorating the head of a small bed in the country with them. Boards are pre-cut to size, sanded and varnished. It is not worth painting them in a different color - it is better to take a stain in order to enhance their dark, time-affected color. A patchwork quilt and colorful pillows can be placed on the bed.

Making a wooden bed with your own hands is not only interesting, but also profitable, as the price of furniture is growing every day. Moreover, you and your loved ones will be pleased to sleep on an item of your own production, and it will look absolutely harmonious in the interior of a wooden house or cottage.

A do-it-yourself wooden dacha bed is a smart solution.

We want to tell you how to make a wooden bed with your own hands.

Preparatory stage

Model selection

Do-it-yourself drawings of a bunk bed made of wood can be found on our website.

You can make a bed with your own hands out of wood with drawers or “floating” cabinets, pull-out compartments, a reclining back or a canopy, you can assemble a bunk children's wooden bed yourself - it all depends on your requirements and taste. In any case, the first step is to choose the most suitable model.

Here one should be guided by considerations of practicality and stylistic compliance with the general interior of the room in which the product will be installed.

That is, you must determine the general direction of the design and provide for all the structural nuances that will make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Let's start with style. The design of a do-it-yourself bed made of wood can be represented by such basic examples:

  • Classic variant. Usually it is a massive bed with carved elements, sometimes there is inlay with velvet, metal and stones. Often, such furniture is completed with a canopy for the most comfortable, if not royal, rest;

Do-it-yourself solid wood bed drawings in a classic style require high craftsmanship;

  • Provencal style. It is distinguished by the use of light wood species - ash or birch, often covered with white or beige paint. The product is equipped with high carved backs, massive drawers, exquisite fittings;

French sophistication embodied in the Provence style.

  • East style. Oriental furniture is characterized by ascetic, but at the same time rational minimalism, austerity of lines and forms. Beds, as a rule, are low, made of dark wood - cherry or wenge;

Rational minimalism of oriental furniture.

  • Modern modern. Here, simplicity and functionality come to the fore, forms and lines are concise and rigorous. Joints are invisible, sharp corners are smoothed out, all the nuances are thought out.

Modern functionality and practicality.

The next step will be the selection of technical and design features. It could be:

  • two-tier or one-tier model;
  • double or single;
  • child or adult;
  • folding;
  • with drawers or side cabinets.

Even a do-it-yourself folding bed made of wood is quite realistic, it all depends on your preferences and capabilities.

Exclusive vintage model.

Important! If you are a beginner, then you should choose simpler designs. A do-it-yourself bunk bed made of wood is practical, but requires calculations and appropriate skills.

Material selection

A do-it-yourself bed for a child made of wood is best made from a coniferous array.

When the model is selected, the necessary lumber should be selected. Of course, we only consider solid wood, no plywood or MDF.

To make a wooden bed with your own hands, you can use a wide variety of wood, both coniferous and hardwood. Conifers are considered more useful due to the content of certain resins and phytoncides, which have an antiseptic and antimicrobial effect.

Simplicity and conciseness are the basis of style.

wood speciesPeculiarities
PineOne of the most inexpensive and popular breeds. Easy to process, well resists moisture and pests, strong enough. It has a beautiful beige-yellow texture and a pleasant smell.
LarchThe most durable coniferous species, characterized by unusually high performance, is not afraid of moisture and pests. It has a reddish-brown tint, it is difficult to process
OakThe most popular hardwood for furniture making. It is distinguished by high strength, resistance to decay and moisture, an incredibly beautiful texture and relatively high pliability for processing.
AshIt is distinguished by high strength (comparable to oak), light wood and an interesting grain pattern. Afraid of insects and requires mandatory treatment with an antiseptic, poorly polished
LindenDurable and plastic rock, which resists dampness and moisture well. Differs in a white or creamy shade, lends itself well to staining, but needs antiseptic treatment

The beauty of an array is unparalleled.

Important! When choosing a material, consider its ductility for processing and availability. If you are not well versed in the issue - choose pine.

Bed making

You will need a set of woodworking tools.

We will not consider complex drawings of a wooden bed with our own hands, it is better to start with a simple one.

  1. First of all, we cut out the legs from a bar 100x100 mm, we select the length according to our own height.

We cut the legs from a bar 100x100 mm.

  1. We attach metal fasteners for the side boards of the frame to the legs using self-tapping screws. The dimensions of the fasteners can be selected upon purchase exactly under the timber.

We mount the fasteners on the legs.

  1. We cut two boards 100x50 mm along the width of the mattress and fasten them between the legs along the short side of the structure.
  2. Then we cut out three boards along the length of the mattress, attach two of them to the legs, install the third in the center of the bed, fixing it to the short boards of the frame with metal fasteners.

We assemble the frame and install the central beam.

  1. We cut planks from a board 75x25 mm along the width of the mattress and stuff them onto the frame with a gap of 50 mm. The slats will cushion and support the mattress.

We fill the planks under the mattress.

  1. We cut out a board with a section of 250x25 mm in width and glue it along the upper edge of the legs, pressing it with clamps.

Glue a decorative overlay on one side.

  1. We make similar overlays on both long sides. Joints should be smooth and neat, with minimal gaps.

We make neat joints.

  1. We cut pieces of timber 50x50 mm and fasten them on the inside of our overlays with a step of 35 - 40 cm.

We cut and fasten the bars.

  1. Then we cover the sides with upper end plates 100 - 110 mm wide, which we first cut out from a board 25 mm thick.

Install the top covers.

  1. On the side where there is no lining, we attach to the back of the legs pieces of the board from the same material as the lining. The height should be slightly lower than the planned headboard.

We fix the boards for the headboard.

  1. We assemble the shield for the headboard and attach it to the installed boards. We use glue and clamps.

We mount the headboard.

  1. We putty all the cracks and joints with putty for wood. We skin all surfaces to a shine, tint with a stain and open with varnish in two or three layers.

If desired, you can attach a cabinet to the side, as in the photo.

Important! All lumber must be pre-dried and treated with an antiseptic complex.

DIY solid bed

Solid wood beds are put up for sale at a high cost. If we disassemble the price component, then most of the payment is charged for manual production, the material itself and fasteners will amount to no more than 25% of the total amount.

Assembling a sleeping bed with your own hands, adjusting it to size is not difficult for a man with basic carpentry skills. When calculating the design, the master will take into account all individual features: length, width, compatibility with the interior, compact arrangement in the room.

Making your own bed out of wood may not be the easiest solution, but certainly the most profitable. Today, almost all similar pieces of furniture cost quite a lot, so it is advisable to buy all the necessary components and assemble a bed from logs or boards yourself. Naturally, this requires certain tools.

To create the simplest option, you do not need any special skills. In this article we will talk about two ways to create a bed: from boards and from logs.

Work must begin with the preparation of a detailed scheme. A wide variety of options can be found on the Internet. Having decided on the model, find out what the mattress should be, its thickness and dimensions. It is best to purchase a mattress in advance so that during the assembly of the bed you can try on and, if necessary, adjust the boards.

Consider the easiest way to create a bed. To create this piece of furniture, you will need to form two sidewalls, a front and rear back, a frame with slats and two inner legs. Need to buy:

  • board 2500x300x20 mm, in the amount of two pieces
  • board 2000x300x20 mm, in the amount of 3 pieces
  • timber 2000x40x40 mm. We need 5 pieces of it, from which we get 4 main and 1 supporting leg
  • rail 1500x40x20 mm. Reek will need 27 pieces. At the same time, we use 25 of them for lathing and 2 for mounting headboards.
  • self-tapping screws
  • wood glue
  • stain and varnish.

After purchasing the material, you can start marking the timber. When cutting, check the dimensions of the sides of the frame again to avoid warping the bed.

Helpful Hints:

  • cutting lines should be marked with a ruler cutter
  • to ensure identical parts, you need to cut out one of them, and then use it as a template
  • the ends on all boards must be treated with sandpaper.

To form the walls of our product, you need to divide the front wall into 3 identical segments in length, and mark it. We do the same operation for the back wall.

Masters advise taking into account the depth of landing of the mattress at the level of 50 mm. We add 20 mm to the depth, which make up the thickness of the rack ceiling, as well as 40 mm, which make up the thickness of the supporting longitudinal bars. We get 110 mm. This means that this value must be measured from the upper edge of the workpiece and, in the places indicated earlier by the marks, screw the support bars.

On the surface of the side wall, we retreat from the upper edge of 70 mm, which make up the depth of the mattress and the thickness of the slatted ceiling. At this level, you need to beat off the line with a hinted cord. At this mark, we fasten the support beam, not forgetting to step back from the edge by 60 mm. Pre-try the length of the screw with the thickness of the timber and boards so that the screw does not come out on the front. In the same way, vertical timber sections are screwed to the side parts, strictly at a distance of 20 mm from the edge.

After that, it is necessary to attach an additional board to the front wall, which will serve as a headboard. For reliability, it is worth smearing the ends with wood glue and fixing. On the outside, the headboard can be reinforced with three rails, planted on the same glue and screwed onto self-tapping screws.

Following this, it is necessary to apply stain to all workpieces, and then apply two layers of polyurethane quick-drying varnish. When the parts are dry, you can start assembling the frame. In the finished frame, on top of the support bars of the front and rear walls, two or three bearing bars are placed. They are attached with self-tapping screws at an angle of 45 degrees. In case of a shortage of timber, you can use slats.

Then, on the resulting structure, observing an indent of 20 mm from the front or rear wall, we put all 25 rails, every 40 mm and fasten them. To increase reliability at the bottom of the bearing bars, it is worth screwing two legs. Everything, you can lay the mattress.

Veneer bed

Veneer is thin layers of wood that have the pattern and texture of wood. They are used to give interior items woody "shades". Beds made from this material are an intermediate option in terms of cost, between solid wood products, which are the most expensive, and chipboard and chipboard products, which are more budgetary.

Raw materials from wood analogues (chipboard, chipboard, MDF) are covered with veneer. If such furniture is created with high quality, it cannot be distinguished from items made of solid wood. This option is more affordable because expensive wood is used only for exterior decoration. Veneering allows the manufacturer to provide customers with a wide range of shades with the texture of natural wood. In addition, this method of production prevents the massive cutting down of trees, preserving the natural resources of our Earth.

Wooden beds, photo

There are a lot of options for log beds. In this section, we will talk about the main issues that are associated with the fixation of logs and the possibilities for creating different types of frames.

There are several types of assembly: the formation of a box of 2-3-4 crowns using the “paw” or “bowl” method. The “into the bowl” method is not so popular because the bed frame will be much wider than the bed itself. But if the room and the interior allow, then why not. Legs are not a mandatory attribute, but taking into account the mandatory access of air to the lower parts of the bed, it is better to make them.

If you decide not to make legs from vertical pieces of logs, then it is enough to make a recess in the lower log 3/5 of the length in the center in height up to half the log. This gap is enough for air to enter.

In addition to the corner assembly, you can fix the logs with the help of dowels. Note that with one dowel it is possible to firmly fix the logs of the entire structure at once, as well as the back or side components.

To create a place under the mattress, you need to do the following:

  • in the upper log create grooves in the form of semicircles with a step in the width of the mounted semi-log
  • support logs must be cut, for example, with a mini circular saw, along the grain
  • put the halves of the logs into the grooves and fix them with self-tapping screws of the appropriate length.

Most often, the back is formed from one or two segments of logs. But more numbers can be used. The logs in the back are connected by dowels.

Logs can be combined with boards. The board can be used, for example, to create a bed under a mattress, or to create side walls. Use 30 mm thick material to support the mattress.

Another technique is decoration. The most commonly used decoration option is the use of bizarre tree branches and trunks. Masters form a grid from such materials, give it a certain edging, or insert it into a ready-made back frame.

For such work, do not forget to clean off the remnants of the bark and treat the material with antiseptic agents. When the design is ready, you can cover it with varnish or stain.

Log furniture looks reliable, natural and attractive. The positives include:

  • low cost
  • ease of assembly
  • huge space for the implementation of the project.

The negative qualities include:

  • bulkiness

A do-it-yourself log bed is not only an affordable option for bedroom equipment, but also a very stylish piece of furniture. But in order to create a comfortable and reliable bed made of logs or boards, it is necessary to strictly follow the technology of its manufacture and prepare all the necessary tools in advance. It is important to choose the right not only the size of the materials, but also the type of wood.

The design of a wooden bed can be created in various styles:

  1. Classical. The bed stands on legs and has a rectangular shape. The design includes backs of various sizes. The product can be supplemented with columns of various configurations and heights.
  2. Empire. The product has a rectangular shape and low legs. The back of a large size and angular type is present at the head of the bed.
  3. Baroque. The bed has a massive size and a lot of voluminous carved elements. The back of the headboard is large. The back at the legs is thin and rarely extends beyond the mattress. But at the same time, it also has many carved scrolls and figures.
  4. Ethnic, or oriental. The bed frame is placed on a wide podium. Legs and decorative elements are missing. The design has a clear rectangular shape.
  5. Rustic. The beds are made from non-rounded solid trunks and branches that have undergone minimal processing. Individual bed models can even be created with wood with bark or knots not removed. In most cases, products are completed with columns and cannot be painted.
  6. Colonial. The design has massive legs and is often equipped with high posts for canopies. The backs are distinguished by their massiveness and the presence of large volumetric decorative elements.
  7. Minimalism. A design of this type may not have legs and backs. The bed has a small height and consists exclusively of a frame.

There are also many bed designs created by combining different styles. At the same time, the simplest designs for execution are log beds in the style of minimalism, classic and rustic. However, given the importance of the presence of legs in the structure, which provide air circulation, as well as the need for pleasant tactile sensations, a classic-style bed would be the best option for self-production.

The main criteria for choosing wood

When creating a log bed, it is very important to pay special attention to the selection of wood. In this case, the main criteria that the log must meet are:

  • material strength;
  • Ease of wood processing;
  • Price availability of lumber;
  • Pleasant tactile sensations from contact with the tree;
  • resistance to deformation;
  • the integrity of the wood.

The most suitable tree varieties for work are:

  • Birch;
  • Pine;
  • Maple;
  • Larch;
  • Alder;
  • Aspen;
  • Cedar;
  • Ash.

However, given the fact that some types of trees often provoke allergies, it is better not to use them in creating beds. Based on this, the most acceptable material is cedar, larch and pine.

When choosing wood, the color of the breed plays the least role, since the finished product can be easily repainted with a tint varnish.

Manufacturing technology of a standard bed

Creating a solid wood bed with your own hands is carried out in several successive stages:

  1. Preparation of the necessary tools and materials.
  2. Carrying out calculations of the number of required consumables and their sizes.
  3. Pre-treatment of lumber.
  4. Frame manufacturing.
  5. Assembly and installation of the back and legs.

The final stage of work is the processing of the finished product with protective solutions, as well as decorating the bed.

Mounting tools

To work on creating a bed of logs, you will need the following tools:

  • Roulette;
  • Pencil;
  • building corner;
  • Level;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Axe;
  • Plane;
  • Bit;
  • Grinder. The tool can be replaced with sandpaper of various grain sizes;
  • Chisel;
  • mallet;
  • sheet pile;
  • Hex key;
  • Electric jigsaw;
  • Electric drill.

Also, to work with boards, you will need a hacksaw for wood.

Calculations

To calculate the required amount of consumables, as well as the dimensions of lumber, it is necessary to draw up a drawing of the future design. In this case, a ready-made detailed bed diagram can be used. Using it, the parameters of the product can be easily proportionally changed, thus reaching the required dimensions of the bed.

The diagram necessarily indicates not only the dimensions of the future bed made of rounded or chopped logs, but also the attachment points of the combined elements. For complex structures, it is recommended to create drawings of the future product in different projections.

To calculate the dimensions of the bed, you can focus on the size of the existing mattress. It should be borne in mind that a sleeping place is comfortable, which fully accommodates the width of a person with hands closed in the abdomen, and at the same time there is a margin of 20-25 cm from the elbows to the edge of the bed or bed.

Material pretreatment

Before starting work on creating a bed from chopped solid wood, lumber must be further processed. The pre-finishing of the material consists of the following procedures:

  1. When buying whole logs, the bark must be removed from the lumber. This is done with a mallet and a chisel or axe. The bark can only be left in cases where it does not show signs of damage. Such logs cannot be polished, but are only carefully soaked with stain in 3-4 layers and opened with varnish. However, the use of beds made from logs with bark often ends in injury. Therefore, the top layer of wood is still better to remove.
  2. Sanding logs with medium grit sandpaper. Thus, the top layer of wood is removed, updating it after storage in warehouses. Also, this stage allows you to further smooth out the unevenness of the lumber and prepare the tree for deep impregnation.
  3. Impregnation of lumber with wood stain. When using the solution, not only the coloring of the wood in the desired shade is ensured, but also its additional disinfection.

You can use both rounded and chopped logs in the manufacture of the bed. As an additional lumber, boards are used to create solid wood beds.

At the end of the preparatory stage, the logs are trimmed to the required dimensions. If it is planned to manufacture a massive bed from beams, semicircular cuts are made at the ends of the logs, allowing the rounded elements to be tightly placed on top of each other.

Frame manufacturing

When creating the frame of a classic standard bed 2x1.6 m from a solid array, you will need logs 2.2-2.4 m long, with a trunk diameter of at least 20 cm. You will also need boards 10 cm wide and 2.5- 3 cm. The boards must be cut to a length of 1.6 m. They will be required to create support for the mattress.

To mount the support under the frame, you will need bars that will be attached along the inner perimeter of the frame, and one supporting central board.

The assembly of the frame from the bars occurs in the following sequence:

  1. On a hard surface, 4 logs are laid out in the form of a rectangle of a suitable size, 2 of which have cuts. The elements are connected to each other with dowels or self-tapping screws.
  2. Along the inner perimeter of the logs, at the same level in the middle, with the help of self-tapping screws, a support beam is fixed.
  3. In the middle of the frame, at the same level, parallel to the side logs, a support board is fixed.
  4. Boards are laid perpendicular to the sidewalls on the supports, which will serve as lamellas. They are fixed to the supports with self-tapping screws.

The optimal distance between the lamella boards is 4 cm. Instead of boards, you can also use a solid sheet of plywood. However, in this case, the design will be much weaker.

Back and leg attachment

The backs and legs to the bed made of logs can be attached in the form of separate elements, or built up on the frame. For separate production of backs and legs, a pair of logs is exposed vertically at a distance of 1.6 m from each other. From above and 10-20 cm from the floor, they are connected to each other perpendicularly with bars or logs. Elements are fixed with self-tapping screws.

For greater strength of the structure, the perpendicular elements of the backrest can be additionally equipped with stiffeners, in the form of thin bars or rounded logs. The second headboard is made according to the same principle. If desired, it can be built the same or lesser height. Backrests with legs are attached to the frame with self-tapping screws in several places.

When building the back and legs to the body of the bed, 2-4 logs are used as the lower support and 1-3 elements each for the construction of the former. To build up the legs, 2 logs are connected with the help of dowels. The body of the bed is turned upside down and connected logs are fixed along its edges. After that, the structure is turned over to its normal position. At the same time, the legs extended along the edges should look like a continuation of the frame.

The back is made according to the same principle. Holes for dowels are made in the logs at the legs and at the head, and additional logs are fixed on top of them. For strength, such joints are additionally fixed with wood glue, which fills all the seams of the structure.

After assembly, the structure must stand until the adhesive has completely hardened. Only after that you can proceed to the final finishing of the bed.

The final stage

After assembling the entire structure, the logs must be sanded with medium or fine-grained sandpaper. Also, a grinder with an abrasive wheel of 140-220 microns is suitable for this work. After processing, the wood is impregnated with a colorless or tinted stain. When it dries, the product is varnished.

You can add shine to the bed in another way. The wood is treated with several coats of teak oil, then treated with furniture wax and carefully rubbed with a leather sanding wheel. With this treatment, tactile sensations when touching the bed will be much more pleasant.
