Acrylic varnish for plaster. Applying decorative plaster with your own hands. Painting in one color

Now masters like to apply an additional coating on top of plasters for decorative work, in order not only to give them a good look, but also to protect them from various kinds of influences. Plus, there is a wide range of materials for this type of work that can be used on such surfaces.

But quite popular among them is plaster varnish for decorative work.

Selection and drawing

First you need to state that the composition of this substance is varied. In practice, it is possible to apply varnish for various surfaces to cover the installed surface. But if you need to preserve the properties of the walls and, in particular, the ability to pass air, then it is an excellent option to use special compositions created specifically for plaster.

Now there are a lot of different varnishes, but for this type of work it is much better to use special mixtures.

Properties

  • First of all, a coating of this type should carry air and, in addition, protect the surface from moisture.
  • Also, varnish usually has additional properties that can protect the wall from small mechanical influences. This kind of specificity makes it possible to do wet cleaning using active detergents and brushes.

  • The main thing is to state that the mixture should not contain substances harmful to humans, which are released when heated or in contact with water. Actually this
    often worries a lot of consumers when they hear the word lacquer.
  • Mother-of-pearl mixtures deserve personal attention. They make it possible to obtain a good appearance as well as imitation of other types of coatings. Plus, it must be emphasized that there are a lot of shades and colors of such varnishes, which makes it possible for designers to create absolutely magnificent compositions.

Special materials designed for work on plaster and putty

  • If you intend to apply such a coating with your own hands, then you need to remember that when you want to replace the interior or apply another layer of coating to the surface, you will have to completely remove the varnish.

Advice!
Certain types of similar coatings have a large number of additional parameters.
And therefore, when purchasing varnish, it is worth analyzing in detail its instructions for use and technical characteristics.

Individual masters in combination with painters apply both varnish and wax, making real works of art on the surface of the walls.

Varnish or wax

  • The main thing is to state that there is also the second most suitable material for covering walls covered with plaster. It is considered a specialized decorative wax. And therefore, in order to form with the selection, a comparison of these substances should be made.
  • Highly professional craftsmen in most cases work with varnish, as it is applied equally and does not leave stains or streaks. Wax, for its part, asks for a specialized installation option, and the instructions for its use ask for further finishing.

Wax is considered the main rival of varnish when working on plastered prices, although highly professional craftsmen do not like to compare these materials.

  • Particular attention should be paid to the fact that the varnish can absolutely always be removed from the plane. To do this, it is enough to finish the wall with a specialized solvent, which is located in free sale in today's building materials markets. After that, you can apply a primer mixture and a brand new coating.
  • Unlike varnish, wax is not easy to remove, and if this is not done, then the level of adhesion of materials to the plane will be small. And so the craftsmen have to use mechanical means, which partly damage the plaster.

Thanks to the varnish, there is a good opportunity to obtain surfaces with a glossy effect without additional efforts, which will not need to maintain their own facade appearance for a long time.

  • It should also be stated that the wax coating does not have such a strength as varnish. And therefore it cannot resist mechanical breakdowns.
  • In another, these compounds have actually similar properties. Plus, a lot of manufacturers are trying to make them much better, which brings these two materials closer to each other.

Advice!
It is much better to use varnishes based on water.
They are much more environmentally friendly and perfectly fit on the relief surface of plasters for decorative work.

If the dye is immediately placed in the plaster during its production, then there will be no stains on the plane, and with a small chip or scratch, a whitish strip will not appear.

Mounting

  • First you need to apply the plaster mixture to the surface. If, for example, it is supposed to give the plane a specific color, then the dye should be added directly to the solution, since if the wall is severely damaged, white areas will not appear on it. But you must not forget that in this option it will be necessary to use a light-transmitting varnish that will not hide the facade appearance and will act as protection.

The level of adhesion and the consumption of the final material depend on the quality of the primer.

  • When the plaster hardens, a primer layer is applied to its surface. Plus, the main purpose of this action is to greatly reduce the absorbency of the coating. Some craftsmen are sure that it is necessary to apply impregnation until the plaster stops drawing moisture.
  • At the next step, you need to walk again along the plane with a primer mixture, but only after 4 hours from the last coating. This is made to create an unusual film. It will serve as a good base and greatly increase the level of adhesion of the plane.

Application of the final coating on the wall surface using a brush

  • Next, you need to prepare the varnish. In most cases, it is implemented in such a way that it can be immediately applied to the surface. But there are similar compositions that need additional mixing with other elements.
  • This process is of great importance and lacks specific adherence to the guidelines that are attached to the material. In specificity, this can be attributed to multi-component or pearlescent varnishes.

Figurative application of varnish using a sponge

  • It is much better to apply the finished composition to the surface with a sprayer. So you can reduce the cost of varnish and get the same layer. Plus, you must not forget that you need to do this operation a couple of times in order to achieve the desired result and give the finished plane a rich color.
  • Certain types of varnish are intended to be applied with a roller or brush. So there is a good opportunity to get a thicker layer and achieve a specific result by performing unusual stains on the wall surface.

You can apply several colors of this substance to make the primary base, which will then be patterned.

  • Personal attention is given to the figured application of varnishes on the walls. And all because there are a number of different tools for this, but highly professional craftsmen use different tools that are at hand in the form of bags or breasts to make unique patterns or images.
  • Also, do not forget that the cost of varnish is high, and therefore it is not necessary to save on a primer mixture in order to reduce its consumption.

Advice!
Highly professional craftsmen advise first of all to apply a little bit of varnish on a small piece of the wall to be lined, which will not catch the eye.
So there is a good opportunity to get an idea of \u200b\u200bwhat the finished surface will be like and, if necessary, add additional elements to the mixture composition.

With the help of a simple paint roller, you can also perform the texture, using more saturated mixtures for this.

Conclusion

After watching the video in this note, there is a good opportunity to get detailed information about the varnishes that are used for the final finishing of surfaces covered with plaster. Plus, on the basis of the text suggested above, it must be concluded that this material is excellent as a coating for protection and gives the walls a good appearance.

Decorative plaster, sold as a dry mix, has a white or gray color. It can be colored immediately when mixed with water. For this, tinting aqueous solutions or pastes are used, which are added directly to the container with the plaster. The amount of color depends on the desired color saturation. The addition takes place with constant stirring. This is the easiest way to paint decorative plaster, used to get the base color of the walls.

Tinting has its advantages over painting the surface in that subsequently scratches and chips in the plaster will be less noticeable.

What colors to choose

Painting decorative plaster completes the repair work and allows you to create a unique individual design. In addition, the paint coating creates an additional protective layer.

For decorating facades
often choose plastering such as "bark beetle", "fur coat", "American". Such textured plaster is often painted in one color. You can choose acrylic, silicate or silicone paint. These types are moisture resistant, suitable for outdoor use, have a wide range of colors. They also have good vapor permeability, unlike oil and alkyd paints.

varnish
- a finishing coating that strengthens the surface of the plaster, protects it from mechanical damage, moisture, and most importantly, improves the appearance of the decorated walls. For interior decoration, water-soluble acrylic varnishes are used, for the facade - on organic solvents.

Before applying the varnish is mixed, if desired, a pigment (color) or glitter is added. The walls are covered in one layer using a soft foam roller.

Types of varnish: matte, glossy, with the effect of crackle (cracks).

Glazing composition, or glaze- translucent top coat for paint. Apply to a flat or textured surface. Suitable for outdoor and indoor work. The composition is applied at a temperature not lower than +10˚С. Cover with a sponge or a special mitten. The entire surface is visually divided into squares and the composition is applied in stages with strokes, shading the joints. The glazing composition turns out to make a beautiful color transition.

There is a separate article on this topic - Lacquer for decorative plaster. It tells about self-preparation and application technique.

Another way to highlight the texture is to cover with colored wax.

A photo

At the end of our review, we give a few photos of decorative plaster after painting.

Can plaster be varnished? What kind of solution should be used in the decorative finishing of plastered walls inside and outside the house? How to do it right? Those who do not understand the issues of construction and repair may not even know that this is possible.

Usually we perceive varnishing when it comes to the processing of wood (floors, walls, furniture, interior items). Lacquer is also often used for metal work. And also for decorative finishing of brick and stone. But few people know that varnish can also be used to cover plaster.

Why varnish plastered surfaces

Lacquer on plaster is applied for this:

  1. Strengthens base materials.
  2. Protects from the influence of external environments: moisture penetration, mechanical damage, exposure to chemicals.
  3. It has antiseptic properties: it protects surfaces from the formation of fungal mold.
  4. Long-term preservation of the original appearance of the decorative finish.
  5. Preservation of the saturation of the colors of the painted walls.
  6. Ensuring the indelibility of the surface, which in turn allows for reusable wet cleaning of the walls.
  7. Emphasizes, enhances, complements the decorative properties of interior decoration.

Lacquer, as a finishing protective coating, usually opens decorative plaster painted in mortar.

What solution to use

Depending on what kind of aesthetic qualities the interior finish should acquire, appropriate varnish products are selected. For indoor use, it is desirable to choose the safest solutions in terms of composition, which include water-soluble varnishes. But for outdoor work, you can choose a varnish on organic solvents, which is more inert to atmospheric influences.

Lacquer is classified not only by the type of solvent base, but also by the degree of haze, by the main composition, by purpose, by special properties (including exclusively decorative ones), by drying time, and so on.

In fact, under the plaster coating, you can choose almost any modern paint and varnish composition. But so that the throughput of the base materials (air permeability, but moisture resistance, first of all) does not decrease, it is still better to use a varnish intended for plastering work.

For decorative plaster you can use:

  1. Water-based acrylic varnish is the most suitable product for indoor use, as it is odorless, non-toxic, environmentally friendly. In addition, acrylic mixtures interact well with base materials, easily stain even textured surfaces. They are used more to give the finish extra gloss. Allow tinting of the solution, both pigment and specific.

Milky shade liquid after drying forms a strong, elastic transparent protective film that does not overlap the main color. Other positive properties:

  1. Aqueous lacquer solution with a different base, such as polyurethane. Although this varnish is usually coated with wooden surfaces and mineral materials. Polyurethane compounds have high strength, moisture resistance, good physical and mechanical properties. The solvent in the form of water ensures the environmental friendliness of the product, that is, free use inside residential premises. It is better to learn more about the possibility of using polyurethane varnish for plaster either from the manufacturer or from repair experts.
  2. Group of facade materials. An important difference is the maximum protection of facade surfaces from aggressive environmental influences. From moisture (rain, snow, fog) and temperature changes. From wind and ultraviolet rays. From mechanical and chemical influences.

In terms of aesthetic properties, this can be:

  • glossy varnish with water and dirt-repellent properties - good for textured surfaces;
  • matte varnish maintains the naturalness of the finish - good for embossed surfaces;
  • craquelure - creates the effect of "antique" paint, finishing feature - the creation of decorative cracks on the plastered surface;
  • mother-of-pearl varnish is used as a topcoat with a unique iridescent effect;
  • gold, silver, steel - in general, any solution with pigments - is used for patination, color enhancement or basic coloring of plaster;
  • with holographic effect.

Application technology

Lacquer work is one of the final stages of finishing. It will take a long time from the moment the repair begins before it will be possible to proceed to the finishing coating of the walls. We will not talk about direct plastering with a decorative mixture or for painting.

This work will take several days, because the surfaces need to be primed, apply a plaster solution, then paint (if required). And each stage has its own drying time. And coloring walls usually requires a minimum of two-layer processing.

Let's move on to varnishing.

  1. To ensure better adhesion of the finishing protective layer to the base materials, it is recommended to prime the plastered walls. For this, primer compositions similar in type to the finishing solution are used (for example, aqueous acrylic). Priming is recommended at least two or three layers. In addition, primers are used:
    • to strengthen the structure of base materials (deeply penetrating impregnations);
    • as an antiseptic to prevent the formation of mold;
    • to increase water-repellent and other protective properties of the finish;
    • to reduce the consumption of varnish solution.
  2. Now let's move on to varnishing. Basically, solutions are sold in a form that is ready for application. Too thick mixtures can be slightly diluted with water (but not more than 10% of the total mass). The mixture must be thoroughly mixed before use until a homogeneous consistency. If tinting is supposed, the pigment is added according to the instructions. If the products are two-component, when mixing, we are guided by the same instructions.
  3. Surfaces can be varnished in various ways, it all depends on what the final result should be. With conventional staining, it is more convenient to use the spray method. The layer will lie more evenly, and the consumption of expensive materials can be reduced. Processing should be done several times at intervals for drying periods. To obtain a decorative effect, other painting tools are used: brushes, rollers, sponge. There are more unusual ways of applying the varnish mixture to the surface, which are resorted to by professional craftsmen.

Compliance with the rules for varnishing plastered walls will allow you to work efficiently even without the involvement of qualified builders. Subsequently, finishing for a long period will not require restoration or major replacement. But even in case of minor troubles, it is easy to solve this problem - the old protective layer is removed with a special tool, after which a new one is applied.

Many owners of houses and cottages are interested in whether varnish can be used as a coating for plaster and which solution is best for finishing already plastered walls. These questions can often only be answered by a person who is well versed in construction and repair.

The advice of professionals will help you understand what varnish for decorative plaster is, how to choose and apply it. This will allow you to carry out repairs quickly and efficiently. The finish will be beautiful and durable.

First, you just need to figure out why decorative plaster varnish is used, whether it is possible to do without this procedure at all.
Experts say that today a lot of materials for interior and exterior decoration are on sale. One of them is varnishing. This process is necessary for several reasons:

  1. The materials that play the role of the foundation are well strengthened.
  2. The finish is protected from moisture, which can penetrate the product and harm it.
  3. Wax, varnish for decorative plaster prevent chemicals and other substances from getting inside, various mechanical damage.
  4. Mold will not be able to penetrate the finish, develop inside this material.
  5. The lacquer can retain its original shape very well, so the facade will be durable, beautiful for a long time. Manufacturers guarantee the preservation of colors, their saturation.

Thanks to varnishing, the surface can not be washed off during repeated cleaning. On the contrary, it becomes brighter and more attractive.

Solution use

When studying how to varnish decorative plaster, you should consider all kinds of means. They are selected strictly taking into account what qualities the finish should acquire.

Indoors, it is better to use products that do not cause much harm to the environment and are distinguished by a fairly safe composition. And outdoor work can take place with the use of any varnish. It can be classified by composition, which is the main one, by decorative properties, by drying time, and so on.

Under the plaster coating, almost any composition bought in the store is well suited. The only quality that needs to be considered is that the varnish was created exclusively for working with plaster. There are many varieties of compositions presented.

Acrylic lacquer

For construction or repair work indoors, water-based decorative plaster varnish is perfect. This is an acrylic composition. Its basis is water.

The advantage of the presented materials is the absence of smell. It can and should be used in various rooms. Acrylic mixtures can perfectly paint over even textured surfaces, giving them the required gloss.

Acrylic varnish for decorative plaster is a liquid of delicate milky shade. When it dries, a protective film is created that does not affect the main color in any way. Under normal conditions, the liquid dries within three hours. If necessary, it can be diluted with water. The layer in this case will become thinner. Acrylic water-based varnish is resistant to ultraviolet and other adverse effects.

Polyurethane varnish

Another solution for interior decoration is a water-based polyurethane decorative plaster varnish. Usually it is it that is used to cover wooden surfaces. The composition has high strength and moisture resistance.

The water in the composition plays the role of a solvent. It provides high environmental performance, which makes the varnish safe for use in residential areas.

facade materials

Facade varnish for decorative plaster is characterized by increased resistance to adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, wind, etc.), as well as various chemicals.

Based on the aesthetic properties, there are several popular varieties of the presented materials. Today, facades are used for:

  • Lacquer is glossy. Repels dirt and water.
  • Lacquer matte. Suitable for embossed surfaces, can maintain a natural finish.
  • Craquelure. It creates the effect of an old surface. His duty is to create decorative cracks.
  • Pearlescent varnish. It shimmers very nicely. Such a coating is considered to be the final one.

There are also silver lacquers, as well as gold ones. However, they are more often used to create small accents, painting over small details.

Application

Works with varnish are transferred to the final stages of finishing. But before you start covering the walls, you need to properly prepare the base. These jobs can take a fair amount of time.

You need to prime the base first. This will give the required tenacity to the connection of the varnish with the wall material. Then you can apply the solution. Each of these actions requires a certain time for the layers to dry. If processing is carried out in two layers, it is required to color the walls.

Lacquering

It is highly recommended to prime already plastered walls for better adhesion of the final or, as it is also called, finishing layer. You need to apply two or three layers. You should also choose the right primer. It will help to avoid the appearance of such troubles as mold.

After that, you can proceed to work directly with varnish. Solutions are mostly ready-made served in stores. Mixtures that have a high density should be diluted ten percent with water. Before you start using the mixture for its intended purpose, it must be thoroughly mixed so that the consistency itself is homogeneous. If the product consists of two components or tinting is supposed, then the pigment is added strictly according to the instructions.

Depending on what the end result should be, they choose how to apply varnish on decorative plaster. For conventional staining, the spray method will be the most suitable. The advantage of this method is the ability to reduce the consumption of materials. They are not that cheap. The layer itself will be even. Take short breaks to dry the layers.

To get a decorative effect, you need to use tools such as a roller or brush. Work in this case requires more time, material costs. Of course, there are such unusual ways of applying correctly that often only professionals use them.

Having considered the features that varnish for decorative plaster has, you can choose and apply the composition correctly to the surface. If you follow all the rules, you can do the job well without builders. In the future, the finish will not need any restoration or replacement at all.

To protect the finished surface, professionals recommend using varnish for decorative plaster. With its help, the base will not only be protected from possible mechanical damage and fading, but will also take on an optimal appearance.

With it, the coating will take a finished decorative effect. Despite the fact that it is possible to perform work with a number of materials intended for these purposes, varnish is the most popular.

Benefits over wax

Lacquer is easier to remove from plaster than wax.

Despite the fact that the method of waxing walls has been known for a long time, it does not have such popularity as varnishing. For these purposes, a special decorative composition was used, which is significantly inferior to the modern method in its characteristics.

The advantage is a uniform application that does not leave stains and streaks. In addition, waxing requires a certain technology with subsequent processing.

It is not difficult to remove plaster varnish from the wall; it is enough to treat the surface with a special solvent intended for this purpose. It is quite difficult to clean the textured area from wax, especially since subsequent painting will be impossible, since adhesion to other surfaces in this case is minimal. Most likely, the layer will have to be removed mechanically, partially damaging the plaster.

Do not forget that varnish is much stronger than wax, so it can perform protective functions much better.

Beneficial features

A layer of varnish will further strengthen the coating

Any material can be used for these purposes. However, it should be borne in mind that if it is necessary to preserve the useful natural properties of the wall regarding the passage of air through its structure, it is recommended to use a special composition intended directly for decorative plaster.

In addition, it will be possible to get a number of other advantages that are unusual for other types of paints and varnishes:

  1. Strengthens and reinforces the base material of the wall.
  2. Protects from destructive external influences: penetration of moisture, mechanical damage, aggressive chemically active substances.
  3. Protects the wall from the appearance of fungus or mold on it.
  4. Increases the period of the original appearance of decorative plaster.
  5. Retains vibrant colors and textures.
  6. It is allowed to do wet cleaning of the base.
  7. Enhances the appearance of the interior surface.

Selection of the optimal composition

First of all, it is necessary to take into account the compatibility of the plaster varnish with the surface on which it will be applied.

To facilitate the selection, you can be guided by the table below.

For interior decoration, water-soluble varnish is quite suitable.

In addition, one must take into account its aesthetic properties in combination with the interior that the surface will have to accept. For example, for application to a wall inside a room, it is recommended to use a solution that is safe in its chemical composition.

One of the most common and affordable in terms of price characteristics is a water-soluble varnish. The treatment of street walls is carried out with a composition with an organic solvent, which is more resistant to atmospheric influences.

In addition, the classification occurs not only according to the chemical and organic composition, but also according to the degree of haze, purpose, decorative features, drying time. Today, the construction market represents a wide selection of different compositions, which can be applied to any surface. But, as mentioned earlier, in order to maintain breathability and moisture resistance, it is best to use varnishes that are intended directly for working with textured plaster. For more information on how to apply varnish on plaster, see this helpful video:

With the help of varnish for plaster, you can get a glossy surface without much effort. At the same time, she will not need periodic care for a long time.

acrylic water based

It is considered the most optimal option for indoor use. It has no pungent odor, non-toxic, environmentally friendly.

In addition, the acrylic composition perfectly interacts with the material of the wall surface, is easily painted, while maintaining the texture. It is intended to increase the effect of gloss, it is well tinted both pigmentally and specifically.

Despite its milky hue when applied, after the surface dries, a protective layer forms on it, which does not distort the main color.

In addition, water-based acrylic lacquer has several other distinctive characteristics that are unusual for other compositions:

  1. Composes well.
  2. Possesses high-quality adhesion.
  3. Resistant to sunlight, moisture, cleaning chemicals.
  4. Does not contain organic solvents.
  5. If necessary, it can be diluted with plain water.
  6. At room temperature it dries within 3-4 hours.
  7. Used for walls made of various materials.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane varnishes are very durable

Water-based varnish with polyurethane addition is mainly used for application on wooden or mineral-based walls. However, on decorative plaster, it does not lose its properties and serves with the preservation of all useful characteristics.

Differs in the high durability, moisture resistance, has excellent physical and mechanical indicators. The absence of a solvent in its composition guarantees good environmental friendliness and the possibility of using it indoors.

Regardless of the chosen varnish, when applying, it is necessary to strictly follow the rules for varnishing textured surfaces. This will allow you to achieve the best result even without resorting to the services of specialists.

Competent and correct processing will allow you to forget about the repair or replacement of damaged areas for a long time.

Plaster is considered a finish, and many do not know that it can be additionally protected and strengthened. What solutions are used to coat decorative finishes indoors and outdoors? One of the effective means is a varnish for plaster. This article will discuss why varnishing ordinary or decorative plaster, which varnish is better to use, and how to properly varnish.

Some people think that it is necessary to varnish wood, furniture, floors, interior items, metal surfaces. However, often varnishes are used to cover brick, plastered walls and stones.

Why you need to varnish the plaster

Many are interested in whether it is possible to coat the plaster with varnish, and why is this done? Lacquer is used for both ordinary cement-sand and decorative plasters, thanks to varnishing the following goals are achieved:

  • the surface of building materials is strengthened;
  • plaster is protected from various negative factors, for example, mechanical stress, penetration of moisture and water, the influence of destructive chemicals;
  • the base acquires antiseptic characteristics, so mold, fungi, and other microorganisms do not appear on it;
  • decorative trim retains its original attractiveness for a long time;
  • the shade of the painted wall retains color saturation for many years;
  • the surface of decorative plaster becomes indelible, so wet cleaning can be carried out many times;
  • the decorative qualities of the interior will be enhanced and emphasized.

Typically, decorative plaster varnish is used as a topcoat, applied to either a painted finish or plain plaster.

What composition is better to use

When deciding to varnish a surface, many people wonder what kind of varnish can be applied to decorative plaster? It depends on whether external or internal walls will be processed, as well as what characteristics the finish should receive. If the varnish will be applied inside the room, then it is necessary to select the safest and most environmentally friendly compositions. Generally, a water-soluble formulation is preferred. A water-based acrylic lacquer is well suited for this purpose. And if the outer layer of plaster is processed, then varnish compositions based on organic solvents are used. These products are highly resistant to harmful weather conditions.

Varnishes are divided according to the type of base, as well as according to the gloss index, according to purpose, technical characteristics, drying time, environmental friendliness, and other indicators. Experts say that almost any type of paint and varnish product can be used to cover the plastered layer. However, in order not to reduce the throughput of the surface, as well as moisture resistance and breathability, it is necessary to give preference to those varnishes that are designed specifically for plaster.

The best option for protecting decorative plaster is an acrylic varnish that has a water base. It is used indoors, is environmentally friendly, non-toxic, harmless to humans, and has no unpleasant odor. Acrylic compounds have good adhesion and interact well with the plastered surface, they are able to paint ordinary, smooth bases and textured surfaces. Acrylic lacquer for decorative plaster is used to make the finish glossy, visually attractive. Acrylic products can be tinted with pigment and specific components.

Acrylic-based mixtures have a milky tint; after drying, the solution forms a transparent, strong and at the same time elastic film that does not spoil the main shade of the finish. Among the advantages of acrylic lacquer products are the following qualities:

  • excellent adhesion to different types of materials;
  • high resistance to household cleaning chemicals, humidity and ultraviolet rays;
  • safety, as there are no organic solvents in the composition;
  • at room temperature, the mixture dries in about three hours;
  • if necessary, the composition can be diluted with plain water;
  • can be used for plaster, stone, brick, and other building materials.

Acrylic lacquer for plaster is not the only option. In addition to it, polyurethane varnish composition is very popular. It is usually used to protect mineral materials and wooden substrates. Polyurethane mixtures have a high rate of strength, resistance to moisture, and excellent physical and mechanical characteristics.

Water is used as a solvent for the polyurethane mixture, which makes the solution environmentally friendly and can be safely applied inside the room in which people live. It is worth noting that not every polyurethane mixture is suitable for varnishing decorative plaster, it is necessary to read the manufacturer's instructions to make sure that the materials are compatible.

A separate group of paint and varnish products is facade materials. They have the maximum indicator of protection against the adverse and aggressive effects of precipitation and the environment. Facade varnishes reliably protect external plaster from snow, rain, fog and temperature changes, as well as from the influence of ultraviolet rays and strong winds. Facade varnish compositions provide protection against chemical and mechanical influences.

Glitter Varieties

Manufacturers offer different varnish solutions that differ in their aesthetic properties:

  • glossy compositions with dirt and water-repellent characteristics. This variety is great for exterior and textured bases;
  • matte varnishes are more often applied to embossed surfaces, on which they maintain naturalness as much as possible;
  • craquelure create decorative cracks on the plaster, the surface acquires an antique effect;
  • mother-of-pearl solutions are used as a finishing layer, they have a very attractive, iridescent, spectacular sheen;
  • steel, silver, gold lacquer mixtures contain pigments of the corresponding color, are often used either as the main layer of paint, or as a shade enhancement or patination;
  • compositions that have a holographic effect create a fantastic, unique look of an iridescent surface.

Application rules

In order for the varnish coating to last as long as possible, you need to follow certain rules and recommendations for applying the composition. It usually takes several days to process the walls, because the surface is first primed, then the plaster is applied, after which, if necessary, a layer of paint, and only after it has dried, the walls are varnished. At each of these stages of finishing, it is necessary to withstand a certain time for drying. When coloring, experts recommend applying the mixture in at least two layers.

Before applying a layer of varnish or primer before varnishing, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned. All contaminants are removed, such as dirt, dust, old finishing paints and varnishes, greasy stains, crumbling areas, and so on. After cleaning, it is desirable to prime the plastered walls, which guarantees the best adhesion of the final layer of varnish to the surface. The primer must have the same composition and base as the varnish used. For example, if acrylic varnish is used, then the primer must also be acrylic. By priming with two or three layers, the following advantages are achieved:

  • materials are strengthened and protected from rapid destruction;
  • an antiseptic coating is created that protects against the appearance of fungi and mold;
  • the water-repellent characteristics of the finish are improved;
  • the consumption of varnish applied over the primer is reduced.

After priming, you can proceed to varnishing the walls. Usually in stores they sell ready-to-use formulations. If the mixture is very thick, it can be thinned (following the instructions) with either water or thinner, depending on the composition of the varnish. It is allowed to dilute no more than 10% of the volume of the varnish solution. Before application, the mixture must be thoroughly stirred so that its consistency becomes homogeneous. You can add pigments for tinting to it, in accordance with the instructions. If the varnish is two-component, it is also prepared according to the instructions.

The lacquer mixture can be applied in different ways. The fastest, most convenient and economical option is spraying from a spray bottle. The solution will lay down in an even layer, and its consumption will be reduced. To get a decorative effect, you can apply varnish with a sponge, roller or brush. It is advisable to varnish with two or three layers, to achieve maximum protection. Before applying the next layer, it is necessary that the previous coating has time to dry. You need to work with gloves, goggles and a respirator to protect the skin, eyes and respiratory organs.

The final stage of painting the surface is a serious and responsible task. One of the most common finishes is decorative varnish. The variety of products in this category can overwhelm the unlucky buyer. The colors of lacquer colors on the modern market are also presented in the whole variety of the visible spectrum.

With the use of various tools for applying varnish, a lot of opportunities open up for creating the most complex texture.

In addition to aesthetic value, the lacquer coating, when properly applied, provides the product with reliable protection against damage of various kinds. Scratching or abrasion, exposure to harsh chemicals, or your child's creative activity, which is a thorough test of the integrity of the finishing layer in all existing parameters - all these are just some of the possible threats that the finished coating will face.

Surface treatment with varnish gives a finished look to the interior and extends the maximum life of the coating, whether it is decorative plaster or other type of finish.

  1. Moisture protection. The use of varnish is relevant for surfaces subjected to wet cleaning (parquet, walls in the dining room, countertops), for walls and furniture in the bathroom, toilet, and kitchen.
  2. Protection from ultraviolet rays (sunlight). The varnish prevents fading, degradation of the protective properties of the coating. Protection is especially important when maintaining the properties of fluorescent and phosphorescent paints.
  3. Reducing the likelihood of mechanical damage. Surface cleaning with a brush or rough cloth, daily visitors to a private store (who tend to move on the floor, not in the air), accidentally scratching the wall with a key or other hard object.
  4. Maintaining the integrity of the coating when exposed to aggressive chemicals. The lacquer protects the surface from destruction under the influence of time, from which no material is protected.
  5. Creation of decorative finishing of the room. Glazing, creating a mother-of-pearl effect or patination in various variations and in combination with other types of varnish coatings can add gloss to any interior.

Types and classification

Without claiming to provide exhaustive information, we present the following classifications:

  • By appointment (for interior work): for the floor, walls, furniture, ceiling work, as well as for the bathroom.
  • According to the final decorative effect: mother-of-pearl varnish, varnish with craquelure effect, glossy, matte, with a holographic effect, metallic effect, translucent varnish.

By appointment

  • – is resistant to abrasion, scratching and other types of mechanical damage.

  • For furniture - it has protection against mechanical damage, from pests.

  • For ceiling work- use varnishes on a water or acrylate binder.

  • - characterized by the absence of spreading under the influence of gravity during the process of painting and drying, protects the material (in particular, wood) from pests. For the bathroom - prevents the destruction of walls under the influence of moisture.

for decorative effect

With the help of a special varnish, you can achieve completely different decorative effects, most often the following types of product are distinguished:

  • Mother-of-pearl - iridescent, shiny, iridescent or plain.

  • - an excellent choice for imitation of antiquity, the coating cracking when dried, sets off the Venetian well.

  • Glossy - gives the surface shine, the matte version is suitable for finalizing relief coatings, good for dispelling glare, especially unwanted ones if there are some flaws in the product.

  • Polishes with holographic, neon or iridescent sparkles. With all the complexity of preparing the mixture and the need for constant mixing during the application process, they will be rewarded with a unique fabulous effect.

  • With a metallic effect- these are gold, silver, bronze or other pigments, such a varnish is intended for patination.

  • Glazing - allows you to create a wide variety of visual effects from mother-of-pearl to a chameleon (changes its color at different angles of view).

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of decorative varnish:

  • fixes the color of the coating, preventing its degradation due to sunlight or other reasons;
  • increases resistance to mechanical stress, i.e. increases the strength of the coating;
  • allows regular cleaning and washing of the surface;
  • applied evenly (in comparison, for example, with decorative wax);
  • if necessary, it is relatively easy to remove with a special solvent;
  • has a relatively high strength;
  • water-based varnishes are environmentally friendly and fit well even on a relief surface.

Flaws:

  • increases the total cost of finishing work;
  • glossy varnish requires a perfect, even and smooth surface;
  • repair of the damaged area will require an almost complete renewal of the coating (if the imitation of a patchwork quilt is not prescribed in the terms of reference).

Choosing a wall varnish, it makes sense to start by studying the basis from which the product is made, as well as depending on the surface material:

  • Acrylic varnish is well suited for gypsum, it is transparent and has a good drying speed.

  • Nitro-varnishes are used mainly on wooden, metal surfaces. Toxic, but dry quickly.

  • Water-based acrylic varnish is environmentally friendly and safe, but does not have high resistance to the threat of mechanical damage. 2 weeks for full curing.

  • Oil-based varnish forms a durable protective film, often used in corridors or hallways. Completely dries in 12 hours.

  • Bituminous varnishes are not intended for decorative finishing, but due to their moisture-proof barrier properties, they are widely used in baths and saunas. Require additional lacquer coating to create a decorative effect.

Studying the composition of the varnish, you should pay attention to harmful substances that can be released when heated or in contact with water. Of course, not only for educational purposes, it is important to exclude the application of such a varnish on surfaces whose operation implies the presence of high temperatures or humidity.

Venetian plaster coating, like plaster varnish in general, must have excellent protective properties in order to preserve the work of art for many years.

Before using a decorative or protective-decorative varnish, you need to familiarize yourself with some recommendations:

  • It is important to follow the instructions, which will provide useful tips (this applies to tinting, mixing components, and in general).
  • Before use, the composition must be thoroughly mixed. Thick varnishes should be slightly diluted with water (at a ratio of no more than 1:10).
  • Be sure to remove the old lacquer coating from the surface with a special tool, and only after that you can start applying a new layer of lacquer.
  • It is recommended to use a primer for better adhesion to the surface and to avoid the formation of mold (antiseptic), to increase the protective properties, to save a varnish solution (more expensive than a primer).
  • The can will provide the most uniform application and save varnish, as well as reduce the cost of brushes, etc. Decorative varnish should be applied in layers, leaving each layer to dry, so that the required color saturation can be achieved.
  • It is important not only with what to cover the wood or plaster, but also with what tools you can implement the most daring idea. Brushes, rollers, sponges and other tools often make it possible to create a wide variety of effects. You should not save on the quality of working materials: the bristles from the brush do not add special aesthetics to the finished surface.
  • An interesting solution for gypsum or other plasters is to place the dye directly into the varnish, then any damage to the decorative coating will not be so noticeable, while you can use a transparent varnish for finishing.

No matter what kind of decorative finish you choose, the most important thing is that the appearance of the interior gives you pleasure. You should not take on super-complex techniques without having the slightest experience, but you should not intentionally restrain the flight of thought either.
