How to reduce gum pain from a prosthesis. Reviews of clasp dentures. Preventive measures to strengthen the gums

Dental prostheses allow you to restore not only the aesthetics of a smile, but also restore the patient's ability to chew food normally. How long does the period of adaptation to removable and non-removable structures last? How to get used to dentures quickly and with minimal discomfort? In the article you will find useful recommendations and tips with which you can deal with this problem.

What will happen immediately after installation?

After installing the prosthesis, you will surely feel relief, because the most difficult is already behind you, the unpleasant moments have been experienced, and you can enjoy your new perfect smile. But do not forget that the prosthesis is a body alien to your body, so you have to go through a period of getting used to your new artificial teeth.

What problems can you face after having a denture installed? Most often, during the addiction period, patients complain of the following: inconvenience:

Often, after installing the product for the first time, the body perceives it as food, as a result, the brain sends a signal to activate the corresponding functions - gastric juice and saliva are released.

This is a normal reaction of the body to a foreign body in the oral cavity. The urge to vomit should go away on its own over time. But there is a category of people in whom such a feature does not allow the installation of prostheses that are in contact with the sky. This must be taken into account when choosing a method of prosthetics.

  • Discomfort while chewing food

This applies primarily to removable dentures, since the distribution of the load in this case is much different from the natural process of chewing food with one's own teeth.

  • Speech distortion

Often, the elements of the prosthesis interfere with the language at first, as a result of which it is difficult for a person to pronounce words normally. It takes time for the diction to return to normal.

  • loss of taste

In the perception of taste, not only the tongue takes part, but also the rest of the oral mucosa. Therefore, you can partially lose the sense of taste of food if the prosthesis closes some areas of the mucosa.

How long is the adjustment period?

Expert opinion. Implantologist Medvedev. O.E.: “It is much easier to get used to fixed structures than to removable ones. Patients often ask the question: How long does it take to get used to a denture? This is individual, on average it will take several days to get used to. Patients quickly get used to single crowns and dentures on pins. The adaptation process takes a little longer with bridge structures. It will take the longest to get used to removable products.

Experts recommend that in the first month after installing the prosthesis, do not remove it at night in order to speed up the addiction process. What determines the duration of adaptation to a foreign body in the oral cavity? The acclimatization period depends on the following factors:

  1. Product dimensions.
  2. Method of distribution of chewing load.
  3. Method of fixation of the prosthesis.
  4. Individual characteristics of the organism.

How to quickly get used to dentures? The following tips will help speed up the adaptation process:

  1. At the very beginning of wearing a prosthesis, many patients complain of pain, abrasions and scratches. In this case, you need to make sure that you put on the product correctly. If the problem persists, contact your dentist: the prosthesis may need to be adjusted to fit you or make some adjustments.

Pain occurs most often while eating. when you're chewing, so it's best to limit solid foods for the first few weeks. Eliminate nuts, apples, tough meats from your menu, which can cause you discomfort. If it hurts to chew soft food, you can cut it into pieces at first.

But gradually switch to the usual diet. You can not drastically reduce the number of meals. Many patients switch to yoghurts, liquid soups and purees due to fear of pain. This is not entirely correct, since chewing load is an important point in the process of getting used to the prosthesis.

  1. If you are concerned about increased salivation or dry mouth, drink plenty of water in small sips throughout the day.
  2. You can massage the gums to improve their blood supply.
  3. If you often have vomiting reflex we recommend that you use these advice:

  1. At violation of pronunciation and diction The following exercises help:
  • read aloud slowly and quietly
  • when you master quiet speech, you can move on to louder reading,
  • Pay special attention to consonants
  • speak tongue twisters
  • speech can usually be restored in 2-3 weeks.
  1. Pay special attention to cleaning the structure.
  2. If the prosthesis is not securely fixed in the oral cavity, you can use special fixing agents - ointments, gels, which not only help to securely fix the product, but also prevent the appearance of wounds and chafing.
  3. Eliminate viscous and sticky foods from your menu (toffees, chocolate bars, for example), which can damage the structure.

What to do if addiction is delayed?

If you can't get used to a foreign body in your mouth, it may take several explanations:

  • the design is poorly fixed in the oral cavity,
  • jaw atrophy,
  • prosthetics were carried out with adentia (read about what methods of prosthetics are used for adentia),
  • individual features of the structure of the patient's jaw.

The hardest thing to get used to, which have metal fasteners. It is impossible to adjust such a product on your own, as it can be damaged. If it seems to you that the clasp design is not securely fixed in your mouth, go to a specialist. The mobility of the prosthesis often occurs due to atrophy of the jaw. In this case, various fixing ointments help well.

It must be remembered that inconvenience when using new removable dentures reflects a temporary nature and is almost always surmountable. In particular, that salivation intensifies at the initial stage of using new prostheses; impaired speech, chewing and swallowing; taste sensitivity decreases; urge to vomit may occur. This is due to the fact that the prosthesis is a foreign body and the body does not perceive it. These inconveniences pass in a short time, and, most often, disappear after 2-3 weeks of constant use of prostheses. For the first week, it is not recommended to remove dentures even at night in order to quickly get used to them. Of course, this does not exclude the need for hygienic care of the prosthesis after meals, before going to bed, or as needed. The occurrence of pain under the prosthesis for the first 2-3 weeks of wearing is also no exception. This is a consequence of the contact of the rigid material of the prosthesis with the sensitive mucous membrane of the oral cavity. Pain is eliminated by the doctor during the correction of prostheses. For this, it is necessary that the points of the prosthesis that injure the mucous membrane are clearly defined. Obviously, this is only possible if a removable denture is used. It should be clarified that the recommendation to use a prosthesis for its correction does not mean that it cannot be removed and, enduring pain, wait for the next visit to the doctor for correction. On the contrary, if severe pain occurs, you can remove the removable prosthesis, but 2-3 hours before the visit for correction, you need to put the prosthesis back on, and even try to give the prosthesis some kind of chewing load. This will help the doctor accurately determine the location and cause of the pain during the visit to adjust the prosthesis.

A frequent complaint at the first time of wearing removable dentures is their poor fixation (retention of the prosthesis, or its stability). The degree of fixation of prostheses, first of all, depends on the anatomical and physiological conditions of the prosthetic bed. They largely determine the stability of the prosthesis on the jaw and the functional value of orthopedic treatment. Therefore, the best stability of prostheses can be achieved on jaws with a well-defined alveolar process and alveolar part, when the attachment points of muscles, frenulums of the lips, tongue, mucosal folds are located at a sufficient distance from the alveolar ridge. It is in these cases that the conditions contribute to the mechanical retention of prostheses on the jaws and prevent their horizontal shifts.

[ Markov B. P., Markova G. B. Orthopedic treatment of patients with complete absence of teeth / Ed. prof. T. I. Ibragimova // Lectures on orthopedic dentistry: textbook. - M.: GEOTAR-Media, 2010. - 208s.] Precisely because this problem is the most relevant for most patients who get used to removable dentures, we should dwell on its causes in more detail. The main reasons for poor fixation of removable dentures are:

1. Partial or complete loss of teeth.

Any removable prosthesis consists of artificial teeth that are installed on an "artificial gum" (or prosthesis base). In the event that “their” (supporting) teeth are preserved, it is possible to stabilize the removable prosthesis due to the retainers they contain. The most common of them are the so-called clasps (or "hooks"), they tightly cover the tooth and hold the removable denture in place; By “bending” or “pulling up” the clasps, it is possible to partially “fix” the prosthesis on the abutment teeth as this coverage weakens. It is unacceptable to do this on your own, because. you can break the clasp or part of the prosthesis, or "overload" the supporting tooth, which will inevitably lead to its loss. Any changes to the prosthesis should only be done by a doctor.

In addition to clasps, removable denture retainers also include locks, pelots, telescopic and screw elements, etc. All of them provide a connection between a removable denture and a relatively immovable part of the prosthetic bed - this, as a rule, is either a preserved tooth or a group of teeth, or an artificial one. crown (crowns) based on preserved teeth or implants. The number of remaining teeth determines the prognosis of fixation of a removable prosthesis: the fewer teeth a patient has, the less opportunity there is to stabilize the removable structure.

It is even more difficult to eliminate the mobility of the prosthesis if there are no teeth. In this case, a so-called complete removable denture is made. In these cases, fixation is achieved only by creating a negative pressure under the prosthesis. It is very difficult, and sometimes impossible, to achieve its “stickiness”. When all the means available to the dentist to stabilize such a prosthesis are exhausted, you will be offered the opportunity to use special pastes and gels (the so-called adhesive agents, as if “gluing” the prosthesis to the mucous membrane of the prosthetic bed). Only the use of these special tools must be agreed with the doctor. In addition, the resolution of the problem of poor fixation of any removable prosthesis is greatly facilitated by dental implantation; after all, implantation is not only an alternative to removable prosthetics, but also a tool for creating retaining elements for a removable prosthesis.

2. Atrophy of the jaw (decrease in the thickness of the jaw bone) age-related changes in the mucosa.

The most common reasons for its development are a long absence of teeth, age-related changes, a long period of use of an old removable denture. However, we will not talk about the reasons for its development. We will focus on how atrophy complicates the fixation of a removable prosthesis: I think it will be intuitive for everyone if we connect the concept of "stability" of the prosthesis with its area. The area of the prosthesis directly depends on the volume of the underlying bone (jaw): the larger it is, the larger the area of the removable prosthesis, the more confident its stability (i.e., better fixation) and vice versa. This circumstance partly explains the fact that the removable prosthesis on the lower jaw is held worse than on the upper one, because. the upper jaw (compared to the lower) has a larger area due to the palate. As atrophy develops, the difference becomes more obvious: the jaw bone decreases in volume, thereby reducing the usable area of the manufactured prosthesis and it becomes less stable.

Jaw atrophy is inevitable for everyone without exception. Conditions for prosthetics are constantly changing. Those who already have experience with removable dentures know that over time, its stability changes. And for those who are trying to wear a prosthesis for the first time, you should know that it is very difficult to “fix” the prosthesis on the jaw and the process of atrophy only aggravates this task, because the conditions for prosthetics themselves worsen. A removable prosthesis can become more stable as it is used. This is due to the variability of the underlying and surrounding tissues. Through chewing load, transmitted to the underlying mucous membrane and bone, the prosthesis provokes their changes - restructuring. The restructuring of bone tissue under a removable prosthesis is active for six months of wearing it. During this period of time, the supporting part of the jaw under the prosthesis changes and becomes, if you like, “more appropriate for the prosthesis”, which often has a positive effect on its fixation.

The mucous membrane of the oral cavity "adapts" to removable dentures even faster. Within 3 weeks, it becomes more pliable and is rebuilt under the weight of the masticatory load, facilitating the fixation of the prosthesis. And the more active the training, the faster the useful changes. Not only chewing and speech improves, but also the fixation of the prosthesis.
Thus, persistent wearing of removable dentures during the adaptation period aims to adapt the underlying tissues to it in order to achieve greater stability. Their fixation is formed, most often, starting from 3-4 weeks of constant use and only after six months can be considered (or not) taken place.

3. Features of the structure of the jaws and soft tissues around the prosthesis (bumps and folds on the mucous membrane, bone protrusions, etc.
mobility of retained teeth.

Technologically, functional suction is ensured by creating a circular valve around the prosthesis. The ability of the mucosal transitional fold to follow the prosthesis when it is moved prevents air from penetrating under the prosthesis, which keeps it on the jaw. The degree of fixation of the prosthesis depends on the relationship of its base with the tissues of the prosthetic bed, the relationship of the outer surface of the prosthesis with the muscles of the mouth and face, and other factors. One of the ways to improve the functional properties of prostheses on edentulous jaws is the design of the outer surface and borders of prostheses, including volumetric modeling. However, if on the upper edentulous jaw in the vast majority of cases it is possible to achieve good fixation, then on the lower jaw, due to its anatomical and physiological features, this method is usually ineffective. This indicates that the issue of fixing prostheses on edentulous mandibles with pronounced atrophy of the alveolar part has not been fully resolved. Due to poor fixation, the prosthesis constantly shifts during chewing, making a microexcursion relative to the mucosa of the alveolar process, injuring the mandible, which further aggravates the atrophy of the jawbone and causes changes in the mucous membrane of the prosthetic bed [Markov B.P., Markova G.B. Orthopedic treatment patients with complete absence of teeth / Ed. prof. T. I. Ibragimova // Lectures on orthopedic dentistry: textbook. - M.: GEOTAR-Media, 2010. - 208s.]

Mobility of preserved teeth.

This phenomenon objectively aggravates the fixation of removable dentures. And not only the initial mobility of the remaining teeth, but also the tendency of its development with the use of removable dentures, all this is the cornerstone in the prognosis of prosthetics. But if predictions and planning are within the competence of the attending physician, then the patient must be versed in the nature and consequences of the treatment being given. The case of removable prosthetics lies in the fact that such a prosthesis can be both the cause and the cause of the mobility of the remaining teeth. On the one hand, the chewing load is distributed to the remaining teeth and “overloads” the latter, provoking their mobility. In this case, prosthetics eliminate or reduce the mobility of the remaining teeth (in addition to restoring the lost ones). On the other hand, the functioning of the removable denture puts an unfavorable pressure on the remaining teeth involved in contact with the removable denture. So, the abutment teeth experience a load exerted on them by the retainers of a removable prosthesis (this, as described above, is a clasp, locks, pelots, etc.). In addition to holding the prosthesis, the teeth prevent its lateral displacement during chewing - such a load on the remaining teeth is more inevitable than harmful. Thus, after the manufacture of removable structures of dentures, dynamic monitoring of the stabilization of not only the prosthesis itself, but also the stability of the remaining teeth, crowns, and bridges is required. Advice to patients: do not forget about the need for such monitoring so that the removable denture does not cause the development of mobility of the remaining teeth.

All of the above reasons for poor fixation of removable dentures are purely individual and pose a difficult task for the doctor to facilitate addiction, and for the patient - complicity in this process. This is achieved through a series of adjustments, when the doctor changes the boundaries of removable dentures in the area of traumatic contact or displacement (jargon "dropping").

- muscle dysfunction.

Dental prostheses replace lost teeth, restore normal dentition, normalize chewing and restore a beautiful smile. Despite the large number of advantages, patients return to the doctor more than once with complaints of inconvenience. In such a situation, the main recommendation would be to refuse self-correction of the prosthesis, as this can greatly complicate further treatment.

But if the gum hurts under the prosthesis, what should I do? Any inflammation or irritation that occurs should be shown to your doctor immediately. He will inspect the damaged area and correct the design.

Characteristic symptoms

If the gum hurts under dentures, then the following clinical signs are observed:

  • pain and discomfort that occurs even in a calm state;
  • increased bleeding gums;
  • an unpleasant odor coming from the oral cavity;
  • the appearance of swelling and redness of the gums;
  • the formation of pathological pockets in which food constantly accumulates;
  • sores;
  • bedsores.

Why is this happening?

What thoughts appear first of all if the gum hurts from prostheses? Of course, about the unprofessionalism of the doctor. Any mistakes made by the dentist or dental technician will become apparent within 14 days after the installation of the structure.

Sometimes it also happens that a denture has been standing for several years, and the gum hurts only months or years later. The question immediately arises: what to do? The first step is to see a doctor.

The dentist will conduct a complete examination and establish the correct cause of the inflammation that has arisen, which may be:

  • improper or insufficient care of the structure in the oral cavity, which led to the multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms;
  • too hard prosthesis;
  • allergic reaction to the material;
  • loss of other teeth, and, as a result, an increase in the load on the remaining ones;
  • irrational nutrition with a low content of trace elements.

The main reasons are detailed in the table below:

Of course, taking antihistamines brings relief, but it is temporary. The best effect is a complete replacement of the structure. In the case of crowns, there is a replacement for a metal-free option, for example, zirconium dioxide. And for removable dentures, they use special hypoallergenic plastic or replace them with non-removable structures.

In the photo below, you can see the reddening of the oral mucosa from a removable denture with a base of ordinary acrylic plastic.

Important! Not everyone gets these reactions. Only those patients who have polyallergies are subject to them.

If the design was not made and selected correctly, then the gum under the prosthesis hurts for a long time.

If the hole near the gum that appears after the prosthetics of the tooth is large, then it is worth checking the accuracy of the fit of the structure to the tooth. Of course, this shouldn't happen.

As a result, the patient's gums under the prostheses hurt during meals, there is a taste of metal and a burning sensation in the soft tissues. The main help in such a situation is the treatment of the fungus.

Pain in the gums after prosthetics with gingivitis appears as a result of the accumulation of plaque under the prosthesis. The tissues become red, swollen and bleed.

Important! Most often, the patient learns about any problems only in the most advanced stage, since the pulpless tooth does not hurt.

How to treat?

Important! The main place for solving gum problems is the dentist's office. The doctor, using an integrated approach, will prescribe adequate medication and, possibly, replace the structure.

Treatment at the dentist's office

If gums hurt under dentures, how to treat them? Treatment will depend on the cause of the change. First of all, the oral cavity is cleaned: all soft and hard dental deposits are removed; if necessary, the dentist-therapist treats caries and re-fills the canals of the teeth.

In the case of removable prosthetics, you should come to all visits to the doctor only with the construction put on. It is advisable not to remove it for several hours before visiting. Only in this way the doctor will be able to see sore spots and chafing. As a result, the doctor will be able to "adjust" the boundaries of the prosthesis correctly.

Home appointments will also be made:

  • anesthetic gels and creams that facilitate addiction;
  • anti-inflammatory and regenerating ointments;
  • in especially difficult cases, antibiotics are used.

At the appointment, the doctor necessarily treats all wounds with antiseptic preparations and makes applications of medicinal ointments.

Important! During treatment, you can not eat spicy, rough and hot food.

What can be done at home?

The main question when the gums hurt from dentures is what to do at home. Completely folk methods will not remove inflammation, but will significantly improve the situation and speed up recovery.

What are the most effective methods:

  • rinsing with decoctions of herbs, for example, chamomile, sage or eucalyptus;
  • rinsing with antiseptic solutions;
  • the use of oils from sea buckthorn or rose hips;
  • aloe leaf.

Prevention methods

The main and most effective method of prevention is a thorough individual oral hygiene.

In addition, the following guidelines must be observed:

  • proper care of the structure;
  • complete and proper nutrition;
  • giving up bad habits, chewing gum;
  • increased immune status;
  • regular check-ups at the dentist.

After the delivery of the prosthesis, the orthopedist gives his care instructions, which includes:

  • the use of specialized cleaning products;
  • daily cleaning of removable structures with a separate toothbrush with a low abrasive paste;
  • long-term storage of removable dentures should be carried out in a special container;
  • to care for fixed structures, it is recommended to purchase an irrigator, as it is able to clean all those places where a toothbrush and floss do not fall;
  • refusal to eat solid food, chewing gum, toffee.

Important! Proper care of the prosthesis significantly extends its service life and reduces the likelihood of developing unpleasant inflammatory processes.

The price of modern orthopedic structures is high, so everyone wants to get a guaranteed good result. But sometimes it is difficult to predict how the body will behave after treatment. The photos and videos in this article clearly demonstrate why the gums hurt after prosthetics and what to do in such a situation.

Treatment of inflammation of the gums under the prosthesis at home. What to do if the prosthesis rubs

Removable dentures.

Briefly about inflammation of the gums under the prosthesis

Dentures are a lifesaver for people who have lost their teeth for any reason. However, when installing a prosthesis, everything does not always go smoothly and painlessly. Many factors can lead to rubbing and inflammation of the gums - from errors in calculations during its manufacture, to wear from time to time.

If timely attention is not paid to alarming symptoms and a feeling of discomfort, inflammation will go into a chronic stage.

Causes of inflammation or rubbing of the gums under the prosthesis

The manufacture of a prosthesis requires the master to be especially accurate in calculations, since even 1 extra millimeter can make it difficult to deliver a lot of discomfort during operation.

Even if everything is done correctly, the adaptation period will also be accompanied by a certain type of inconvenience. Removable prosthesis is made of a fairly rigid material. In contact with soft gum tissues, it will press, cause a sensation of a foreign object in the mouth, pain and discomfort. This is normal for the first days of wearing. Over time, addiction occurs and this feeling will pass.

If a lot of time has passed since the first fitting of the prosthesis, and wearing is still accompanied by pain, you should see a doctor to identify the causes. There may be several of them:

  • Poor oral hygiene. Pieces of food get under the prosthesis and create unnecessary friction.
  • Wear of the prosthesis. It happens that the prosthesis has been used for many years, and only after a long time has it begun to rub. This means that the natural wear of the product has occurred and it is time to order a new prosthesis.
  • Allergic reaction to materials. The most common allergens are metals such as nickel, cobalt, chromium and copper. The denture should be removed as soon as possible and tested for an allergic reaction in order to avoid such oversights when making a new denture.
  • An error made in the calculations during manufacture, as a result of which the prosthesis injures or rubs the mucous membranes. It can be eliminated by the doctor with the help of sharpening and adjustment.
  • Candidiasis- tissues become inflamed and become sensitive to mechanical stress. At the time of treatment of candidiasis, you will have to refuse to wear a prosthesis.
  • Gingivitis- The disease can occur for a variety of reasons. Untreated gingivitis can develop into sores and cause a lot of inconvenience when wearing a prosthesis.
  • Caries on depulped teeth. If caries begins to grow on the pulpless abutment teeth, the patient may not notice it immediately, since the tooth does not feel pain after the removal of the nerves. The disease can progress until the flux begins.
  • Wrong fixation. Before putting the prosthesis into operation, the doctor teaches the patient how to put on and take off the structure correctly. If the patient does something wrong, then he can injure the mucous membranes.
  • Unreliable fixation. If the prosthesis does not fit snugly against the palate, it periodically slides onto the gums, thereby rubbing them. In order to fix this, it is worth using a special adhesive for removable dentures.

Most people ignore the slipping of the prosthesis to the last, trying to hold it with their tongue, which is fundamentally wrong. This leads to permanent chafing and chronic inflammation of the gums.

Symptoms of rubbing gums with dentures

Rubbing of the gums with a prosthesis and inflammation is expressed by certain symptoms, and includes one or more of the following signs:

  • Redness of the gums.
  • Swelling of mucous membranes.
  • Gap between palate and prosthesis.
  • Pain extending throughout the jaw.
  • Bleeding.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Fever or feeling hot in the mouth.
  • Bad breath.

Do not wait for everything to go away on its own and self-medicate - you can not do without the help of a specialist.

What to do if the prosthesis rubs the gums

Correction and sharpening of the prosthesis at the dentist

To undermine the prosthesis, you need to contact the dentist who was involved in the manufacture and installation of the prosthesis. As a rule, the doctor is visited a day later and several more times within two weeks after installation. It may take about 10 corrections of the prosthesis to achieve the maximum degree of wearing comfort - this is completely normal.

Sometimes at the place of wearing the prosthesis, small bleeding ulcers, peculiar calluses, form. Most often they are located at the edges of the structure. The main thing is to treat them in time and grind the prosthesis from all sides, eliminating defects. After it is adjusted, the sores will heal quickly.

After the first installation of the prosthesis, it is important to leave it in the mouth overnight. So the addiction will happen much faster.

Home treatment - pharmacy and folk medicines

  • Gels and creams for gums eliminate the cause of chafing. Most often, doctors prescribe drugs such as Holisal, Solcoseryl and Kamistad.
  • collagen platesFarmadont- help eliminate abrasions, accelerate healing and relieve pain. The plate must be glued to the sky for 20 minutes. Repeat the procedure three times a day until complete healing.
  • Healing oils of sea buckthorn or rosehip- have a healing effect, relieve inflammation. They are used as applications as follows: a small piece of gauze is moistened in oil (or a mixture of oils) and applied to the palate for 15 minutes. To achieve the best effect, the procedure should be repeated three times a day.

What to do if the gum is inflamed under a denture

If a few more days of waiting separate from the doctor's appointment, and pain from inflammation does not allow eating normally, then you can use one of the following medicines or folk recipes.

Pharmacy medicines

Solutions for rinsing the mouth

  • Tantum Verde. Due to its powerful antimicrobial effect, it is widely used not only for the treatment of throat diseases, but also for dental ailments. To prepare an anti-inflammatory solution, add a teaspoon of the drug to a glass of water with a volume of 200 ml. Rinsing should be done every 3-4 hours.
  • Furacilin an effective and inexpensive drug that is available in almost every home first aid kit. To prepare an antibacterial rinse, crush 1 tablet of the drug and dissolve in boiling water, stirring vigorously for 1 minute. After the solution has cooled to room temperature, rinsing can be carried out.
  • Chlorhexidine- a budget tool for disinfecting various kinds of wounds and inflammations. To prepare the solution, mix 1 teaspoon of the drug and 200 ml of boiled water . It is used as oral baths three times a day.
  • stomatofit- a tool specifically designed to eliminate damage to the mucous membranes of the oral cavity. It is based on extracts of medicinal herbs and plants.

Rinsing is a simple and safe way to relieve irritation and inflammation at home. The more often rinses are carried out, the faster the improvement occurs.

Tantum Verde rinse solution

Gels and ointments

  • Holisal- kills microbes, relieves swelling and eliminates bleeding. Has a fast analgesic effect. Relieves pain within 2-3 minutes after application.
  • Metrogil Denta- The main active ingredient is Metronidazole. It has an antiseptic and antibiotic effect.
  • Kamistad- quickly anesthetizes chafing, due to the presence of lidocaine and chamomile extract in the composition.
  • Asepta- contains Metronidazole and Chlorhexidine, due to which it has a pronounced antiseptic effect.
  • Periodontocide- eliminates the symptoms of inflammation on the mucous and rubbed gums. Contains extracts of medicinal herbs and plants, thereby soothing irritation. The main active ingredient is phenyl salicylate (interacting with saliva, it turns into salicylic acid).

Toothpaste

  • LACALUT active- contains in its composition Chlorhexidine and components for relieving inflammation from swollen mucous membranes - bisabolol and allantoin. Thanks to aluminum lactate, gum bleeding is reduced after the first application. Fluoride strengthens weakened tooth enamel.
  • Parodontax- available with and without fluorine. The paste contains many medicinal plants that relieve inflammation and swelling.
  • Forest balm for bleeding gums- relieves inflammation and reduces bleeding. The paste is based on extracts of medicinal herbs and plants that help strengthen the gums.
  • Periodontol Active - another paste with extracts of medicinal herbs, however, among others, it is distinguished by the presence of hydroxyapatite. It strengthens weakened enamel and reduces sensitivity to temperatures.

LACALUT active

Folk remedies

  • Chamomile- to prepare chamomile broth, take 1 tablespoon of dry inflorescences, brew them in 300 ml of boiling water and leave to infuse under the lid for an hour. After that, the infusion can be used for oral baths.
  • Oak bark.twenty grams dry oak bark must be steamed in boiling water and left to infuse for 30 minutes. Strain the resulting solution from the sediment, after which you can start rinsing.

Mouth baths differ from rinses in that you just need to take the liquid into your mouth and hold for 1 minute and then spit it out.

Compresses and lotions

  • Aloe- Aloe pulp has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, so it can be used as a healing compress. A piece of aloe pulp should be wrapped in gauze and applied to the sore gum at night. As a rule, the effect is already noticeable the next morning.
  • Plantain- pass a bunch of plantain leaves through a meat grinder and wrap the resulting slurry in gauze. Apply to the site of inflammation for half an hour.
  • Propolis- knead a small piece of propolis in your hands and flatten it. The resulting "Pancake" must be glued to the diseased gum for an hour.

Propolis

Preventive measures to strengthen the gums

Oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are the key to strong and healthy gums. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day using a medium-hard toothbrush. And also do not forget about cleaning the interdental spaces with a floss and mouthwash. A scheduled visit to the dentist should be carried out at least twice a year.

Conclusion

The mucous membrane under the prosthesis can become inflamed for a variety of reasons. The main thing is to establish and eliminate the disease in time. Postponing a visit to the dentist or improper self-treatment can lead to extensive swelling, inflammation, suppuration, and even loss of healthy teeth.

The gums are inflamed: the denture rubs and causes pain - what to do and how to treat?

Dental prostheses replace lost teeth, restore chewing function and restore an attractive smile. However, after prosthetics, patients often turn to an orthopedist with a complaint that the prosthesis rubs and injures tissues during operation. The first advice given by specialists is not to correct a removable prosthesis on your own, not to remove partially removable structures during the adaptation period. This will only exacerbate the problem.

Inflammation and irritation of the gums and mucous membranes of the alveolar process caused by the removable denture should be dealt with under the supervision of a specialist. He will also inspect and adjust dentures if errors are noticed in their manufacture and installation.

Symptoms of inflammation of the gums

Inflammation of the gums when wearing prostheses is determined by the following signs:

Causes of pain in the gums under the prosthesis

Pain and inflammation under the prosthesis often occur due to the unprofessionalism of the doctor. In this case, they will make themselves felt within the first two weeks after installation. What to do when it hurts under the bridge after a few months or even years? You should seek the advice of a dentist. If the area under the prosthesis is swollen, the doctor first of all determines the cause of the inflammation. It can be:

Allergy to the material of the prosthesis

When allergic to the framework of bridge structures, patients complain of swelling and swelling of the gums. More often it manifests itself on cermets, sometimes it occurs on plastic (if the plastic manufacturing technology is violated). Taking antihistamines brings temporary relief. In severe situations, in the absence of timely assistance, Quincke's edema develops.

If a reaction to metal or plastic is detected, the structure should be replaced. The most suitable type of prosthetics is selected by the doctor. Metal-free analogues with zirconium dioxide are often used.

Wrong installation

Any foreign structure in the mouth takes time to get used to. At the same time, even a millimeter of discrepancy during the installation of the prosthesis brings tangible discomfort to its owner. If it is made and chosen incorrectly, it will rub and press for a long time, causing discomfort in the gums. The overhanging edges of crowns and dentures can also injure the soft tissues of the gums. This happens when the design is incorrect.

Sometimes the orthopedic dentist decides to fit the prosthesis by filing it from both sides. The repair redistributes the load, and you have to go to the doctor several times until the desired effect is achieved. They file only in serious cases - from periodic and frequent manipulations, the structure quickly becomes unusable.

candidiasis or gingivitis

With improper installation of structures or as a result of infection in the oral cavity, fungal stomatitis, gingivitis and other diseases can develop. The rubbed gum becomes inflamed, reddens, sores and erosions with a white coating form on it. The patient is concerned about the unpleasant taste of metal in the mouth, pain during meals, burning and discomfort in the soft tissues. First aid in such situations is the treatment of infection, after which it is possible to repair removable dentures.

With gingivitis, the cause of inflammation is soft plaque that has accumulated under the prosthesis. The gums swell, hurt, bleed, there is discomfort during palpation. If left untreated, the disease becomes chronic, causing deep damage to the periodontium. Antibacterial gels and ointments help fight the disease.

Other reasons

Other "provocateurs" of gum inflammation include diseases of the abutment teeth. Before prosthetics, they are depulped and ground. Being under the crown, over time, the teeth may undergo caries (we recommend reading: what to do if the smell from under the crown begins to appear?). Pathogenic microorganisms in the cavity penetrate to the roots and provoke deep inflammation of periodontal tissues. In the absence of preventive examinations, the patient learns about the problem at the last stage of caries, since the tooth is depulped and does not hurt. Treatment or extraction of a tooth is performed after the removal of the prosthesis.

Often, the cause of the inflamed gums is medical errors, mechanical injury to the soft tissues of the oral cavity, and reduced immunity. Each of them has its own approach to the choice of medical care.

What to do if the prosthesis rubbed the gum?

Treatment at the dentist

Treatment at the dentist is aimed at eliminating the cause of inflammation. Preventive cleaning, removal of plaque, removal of stones, refilling of canals, treatment of diseased teeth is carried out. The doctor should be visited in a prosthesis, even if it hurts. For subsequent adjustment, he must see the chafing and imprint on the gum, based on the results of the examination, a decision is made to change or fit.

Depending on the nature of the problem, the following may be prescribed to relieve inflammation:

At the doctor's appointment, irrigation with medicinal solutions, medical treatment of the gums, oxygen therapy, and darsonvalization are also carried out. With bedsores, cleaning of necrotic tissues is performed and drugs are prescribed that improve regeneration. During treatment, it is important to refuse spicy, rough, hot dishes. Until the unpleasant symptoms subside, removable structures should not be left overnight in the mouth.

Treatment at home

When using exclusively folk methods, it will not work to overcome scuffs and inflammation. However, they complement and make the treatment prescribed by the dentist more effective, relieve pain and prevent the spread of the inflammatory process. The most effective ways to deal with the problem if the prosthesis is rubbed:

Prevention of inflammation of the gums

Good oral hygiene is a must for dentures. Prevention of gum disease in this situation is as follows:

Denture care

  • the use of special cleansing preparations (Corega, Rocs, Protefix);
  • daily cleaning of removable bridges with a soft-bristled brush with the right paste;
  • thorough cleaning of the inner surface of fixed crowns and bridges;
  • for long-term storage of a removable structure - the use of special solutions and containers;
  • the use of fixing creams and gels for removable and partially removable structures (they will allow you to quickly get used to the prosthesis, make its use comfortable);
  • the use of an irrigator for fixed dentures (it will clean the denture better than a brush and will gently massage the gums).

When using removable and non-removable structures, one should avoid the use of hard and viscous products (“toffees”, iris), the intake of which leads to a “breakage” of the jaw. During chewing, it is important to evenly distribute the load on both sides of the cheeks to prevent displacement of the prosthesis.

A well-made and correctly installed prosthesis is indispensable in case of loss of teeth. Careful attitude to it will reduce the risk of inflammation and pain in the gums, preserve the health of the oral cavity.

What to do with inflammation of the gums under the prosthesis, if the jaw hurts when worn, the design presses and rubs?

After the installation of dentures, many patients complain that the gums have become inflamed, chafing and pain have appeared. Perhaps the cause of discomfort was an allergic reaction or the structure needs correction or repair - it is better to consult a doctor as soon as possible. If you ignore inflammation of the gums for a long time, ulcers, bedsores and serious diseases can form that require urgent specialist intervention.

Causes of inflammation of the gums under the prosthesis

Dental construction cannot be made extremely accurately. When taking impressions, casting a blank, making and processing a model, it is impossible to take into account all the small depressions and tubercles present in the jaw relief. In addition, the material from which the prostheses are made is denser than the mucosa. For this reason, the inconvenience associated with the installation and wearing of the structure cannot be avoided.

Due to improper design

Patients often report that after installing a prosthesis, the gums under it hurt and become inflamed. Prosthetics is not the most pleasant procedure, even when the prosthesis is made of cermet or other expensive material.

It is worth remembering that any design is a foreign body in the mouth, so it takes some time to get used to it. In addition, the product may not be made correctly, because of which it will press or loosely fit and rub. In this case, it is impossible to correct the prosthesis - the removable or permanent structure must be replaced.

However, most often abrasions appear due to:

  1. Incorrect donning. A perfectly fitted prosthesis can also injure the mucosa if the patient cannot fix it correctly. Each design has its own principle of putting on (back to front or front to back), which allows it to fit snugly into place.
  2. Initial overlay. Discomfort during the first 1-3 months is normal. During this period, a prosthetic bed is formed in the area of the mucosa that is in contact with the product.
  3. Long-term (over 5 years) wearing. Rubbing appears due to shrinkage of bone and soft tissue. Since the solid base remains unchanged, a cavity is formed between the product and the gum. The product moves during chewing, causing discomfort.
  4. Uncomfortable design of a permanent prosthesis. If the bridge causes pain to the patient, a doctor should be consulted. If you can get used to the removable product, adjust it, then the permanent structures will need to be replaced.
  5. Load changes. If the patient tries not to chew on the side where the product is installed, and then sharply increases the pressure on it, pain may occur.

Correction of a denture is carried out in several ways:

  1. Relocation. Required in case of structural fracture resulting from impact or during use. In this case, only the basis changes.
  2. Correction. It is carried out in case of loss of fixation or contact with tissues. At the same time, the basis retains its appearance and occlusion. The patient should not wear the product for two days, so that the mucosa is restored. After that, the dentist removes irregularities on the basis, adjusts the side edges, rounds the edges of the structure and fills it with new material. The product is polished and polished.
  3. Repair for a fracture of a removable prosthesis. Broken parts are matched and connected. The doctor takes an impression when the product is inserted into the oral cavity, the dentist fills in the defects with wax. When artificial teeth are lost, he removes the units that need repair and applies self-hardening resin. The structure is polished.

When making adjustments, the doctor files only those parts that clearly interfere. The procedure is carried out within 10-20 minutes. Restoring a broken product takes several days.

Allergy to metal

An allergic reaction is possible to any material used to make the product. Most often, when installing crowns and bridges, cases of allergy are recorded during prosthetics with metal ceramics - the body reacts to the metal frame. With pain under removable dentures, an allergy to plastic is possible.

The reaction is manifested by the appearance of edema, itching, a small rash, numbness of the mucosal area. Most often it is caused by copper, nickel, chromium, cobalt and alloys of these metals. Treatment consists in replacing the structure with a zirconium dioxide product. In removable dentures, plastic is replaced with a hypoallergenic material or the patient is offered to install non-removable models.

Wrong care

The gum under the prosthesis can hurt if hygiene rules are not followed. Patients with removable and non-removable structures should carefully care for their teeth, cleaning all surfaces using special devices - irrigators and single-bundle toothbrushes.

Failure to comply with hygiene leads to the formation of tartar, periodontitis, gingivitis. Under the product, microparticles of food accumulate, in which microbes multiply. Bacterial plaque under the prosthesis provokes the appearance of inflammation, the mucous membrane bleeds during brushing. Gingivitis is one of the most common diseases among patients who wear removable and non-removable products.

Particularly acute pain in gingivitis is manifested by palpation. Without treatment, the disease flows into a chronic form, affecting a large area of the alveolar process. If your gums hurt constantly, you need to see a doctor. Therapy for gingivitis is aimed at removing hard plaque, which serves as a source of infection.

Characteristic symptoms

Pain

The oral mucosa is soft and delicate, it is difficult to adapt to artificial teeth. After the installation of a removable prosthesis, inflammation of the gums almost always appears. The rubbed mucosa hurts, because the design constantly presses on the tissues, especially when chewing. What to do to alleviate the condition? You need to analyze your feelings:

  • discomfort manifests itself during a conversation;
  • uncomfortable chewing food;
  • in the place of contact of the prosthesis with the gum, a burning sensation is felt;
  • gingival pockets are formed due to the loss of the original position of the product.

Gum swelling

When the mucosa becomes inflamed, the pathological process is usually accompanied by edema. An unreliably fixed prosthesis is displaced, injures tissues, rubs, and toothache disrupts the usual way of life. Inflammation is manifested by the following symptoms:

  • an unpleasant putrid or metallic smell from the oral cavity;
  • erosion, bedsores, ulcers on the gums;
  • point hemorrhages;
  • the appearance of pustules and rashes;
  • temperature rise;
  • the patient notices that the tissue around the tooth is swollen;
  • with severe inflammation, chills and fatigue are observed.

Caries also leads to inflammation of the gums, which affects the teeth that have been depulped before installing the prosthesis. The absence of a nerve does not allow you to feel the signs of the disease, so the infection freely reaches the soft tissues. You can notice the disease already with the formation of a flux. If the gum is swollen, the cause may be the accumulation of pus.

Method of treatment

Medications

If the design has rubbed the gums, pharmaceutical preparations are used for treatment. Regular use of solutions, gels and ointments can relieve inflammation and eliminate discomfort. In addition, the mucous membrane is disinfected - pathogens die, due to which infection of the wounds is practically excluded.

It is better to treat soft tissue inflammation immediately after the first symptoms appear. Popular drugs are presented in the table.

Gums hurt under dentures

Teeth hurt and gums under the crown can often become inflamed. The reasons for this are different. The main ones are:

  1. Untreated tooth.
  2. Allergy.

In this case, you should consult a doctor and re-treat.

Causes of pain under dentures

Some causes cannot be eliminated on their own. Only a specialist can determine the problem, prescribe therapy. The method of treatment depends on the correct diagnosis.

The reasons why the gum becomes inflamed and sore under the crown are:

  • Few vitamins in the body.
  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • Diseases of the teeth.
  • Weakened immunity.

  1. Allergy to the substance from which the prosthesis is made. A person will complain of swelling and swelling of the gums. Such a reaction of the body to cermets, sometimes to plastic. Antihistamines may provide temporary relief. With untimely help, Quincke's edema appears. This design needs to be replaced. A new version of it is chosen by the doctor.
  2. Incorrect installation of the prosthesis. When installing a prosthesis, a person needs time to get used to it. Mismatch can bring discomfort. If the prosthesis is not made correctly, it rubs the tissue. The dentist can sometimes file the design.
  3. Candidiasis. When the gums become inflamed, it can become infected, resulting in gingivitis, stomatitis, or other pathology. Ulcers and plaque will appear on the affected tissue. The patient has pain while eating. In such a situation, the infection must be treated. Sometimes medicines and ointments are used for this.

Pathology can be manifested by symptoms. The more of them appear at the same time, the more neglected the case. The fact that tissue inflammation has begun is indicated by the symptoms:

  1. Swelling and redness of the tissues under the prosthesis.
  2. Bad smell.
  3. Bleeding from the gums.
  4. Pain.
  5. No appetite.
  6. Temperature.

In the case when the crown was placed recently, a person may experience discomfort for the first 3-4 days, until he gets used to it. At this time, it is important to follow the recommendations of the doctor. The symptoms will subside. Manifestations can be different from the pathology, then the doctor chooses the medicine, respectively, different, depending on the mechanism of the development of the disease.

First aid

Sometimes a person does not have the opportunity and time to urgently visit a dentist. Here the question arises: what to do when the gum starts to hurt under the crown? It is recommended to take the following actions:

  1. Take painkillers (Analgin, Paracetamol).
  2. Rinse your mouth with a solution of soda or an antiseptic that can be purchased at a pharmacy (Cholisal, Malavit, Miramistin).
  3. Rinse your mouth with an infusion of herbs or apply a compress from a decoction of plants to a sore spot. To do this, you can use chamomile, oak bark, plantain.
  4. Massage the site of inflammation.

These activities will help reduce pain, but it is still necessary to visit a doctor if possible.

The doctor's actions depend on the reasons for the inflammation. Usually you have to remove the crown for treatment. It will not be possible to reuse it, it will be deformed during dismantling.

Sometimes it happens that the doctor does not have to remove the crown. He drills a small hole in it and acts through it on the affected area. But such operations can be done if the crown is made of a special material, after the procedures the hole is closed on it.

If pain and inflammation appear due to the fact that the crown has an inappropriate design, then the doctor prescribes ointments to the patient. They will relieve inflammation and eliminate pain. Sometimes a crown correction may be considered.

When choosing a method of therapy, the doctor is guided by indicators:

  • The age of the person.
  • Cause of inflammation.
  • Contraindications.
  • characteristics of the patient's body.

To relieve inflammation are prescribed:

  1. Antimicrobial agents (Antibiotics of various types, Nitrofuran, Sulfanilamide).
  2. Creams that will help you get used to the design of the prosthesis (Lakalut, Korega).
  3. Placement of plates between tissue and prosthesis.

Folk technique

In addition to traditional methods of treatment, therapy can be carried out using folk remedies. There will not be an optimal result from such treatment, but it will help to increase the effect on a person of drugs.

To relieve inflammation, you can use:

  • Aloe leaves.
  • A solution of salt, water and soda.
  • Chamomile infusion.
  • Decoction of oak bark.

Complications

The gums can become inflamed not only because of an incorrectly selected or installed prosthesis. Pathology may occur for other reasons. Edema and inflammation indicate that violations occur in the structure of the gum tissue.

For example, the tissue near the tooth is affected. If this manifestation is not eliminated, it will lead to rejection of the implant. When the inflammation has passed to healthy teeth, they will need to be removed.

Preventive measures

To minimize the possibility of gum inflammation, it is necessary to take preventive actions, with the help of which to take care of the crown and oral cavity. Doctors recommend doing the following:

  1. The denture should be washed and cleaned twice a day. This will help eliminate plaque from it. You can use regular dentifrice powder and a brush.
  2. Remove the prosthesis before going to bed so that the body can rest from it. Put it in the solution.
  3. Perform gum massage. This will improve the blood flow in them.
  4. Brush your teeth thoroughly and remove any food that gets stuck between them. This will help prevent the onset of its decay and the appearance of inflammation.
  5. Timely repair and correct structures in the mouth when they break.
  6. When the first signs of inflammation appear, rinse your mouth with herbal infusions or solutions from pharmacies.
  7. Eat well.
  8. To refuse from bad habits.
  9. Strengthen immunity.
  10. Periodically undergo examinations with a doctor and eliminate all diseases of the teeth.

When eating, refuse viscous products that can break the prosthesis. When chewing, the load should be evenly distributed over the entire surface of the prosthesis.

If such actions did not give a positive result and the gum becomes inflamed anyway, then you need to visit a doctor. He will solve such a problem, it will not allow complications to develop.

The period of adaptation to a denture is not the most pleasant time, however, the comfort of further use of the “second teeth” depends on whether the doctor’s recommendations are followed in the process of getting used to.

What are the ways to reduce discomfort, restore diction and chewing function? Why does salivation change and how long does it take to get used to removable dentures?

Pain reduction

The very first negative sensation that occurs after the installation of a removable denture is a feeling of pain. The gums ache, which have managed to wean themselves from the external load, and they hurt quite strongly - often you even have to drink painkillers.

In the first days after prosthetics, severe discomfort is felt not only during meals, but also in the absence of pressure on the false teeth. Doctorsrecommend not to torture yourself and drink any painkiller as needed available for purchase without a prescription - Nurofen, Panadol or Baralgin.

You need to be prepared for pronounced discomfort during chewing - the prosthesis, in contact with the gums, will rub them strongly. P you will need to rebuild your usual diet, excluding from it all solid foods - crackers, nuts, sweets.

Soft food should be cut into small pieces and chewed carefully. Such precautions must be observed during the first month, while the prosthesis is lapped against the gums.

In the future, you need to return to the original diet, adding solid food to the foods consumed in small volumes.

Important: a decrease in appetite is a common occurrence after the installation of a removable denture. There is no need to be led by the desire to skip meals - you need to eat in the same amount as before prosthetics.

The more chewing load falls on new teeth, the faster they will rub against the gums.

Dentists, as an effective way to reduce pain, recommend doing an independent gum massage. It is performed in the following sequence:

  1. Wash hands with antibacterial soap;
  2. Stroke the gums in a circular motion, gradually moving to the inflamed areas;
  3. Accustomed to stroking, increase pressure;
  4. Grasping the gum with the thumb and forefinger, make vertical movements from the bottom up.

The entire massage should last 3-4 minutes, after which the pain will decrease for a while. It is done as needed - there are no restrictions.

What to do when rubbing

At first, the prosthesis will interfere and rub, there is nothing surprising in this - you need to get used to a foreign object in your mouth.

However, if severe pain does not decrease after the first 2-3 days, you should go to the doctor. This problem can have two reasons:

  1. Incorrectly fitted prosthesis sizes;
  2. Sensitive gum tissue.

First of all, the doctor will check the dimensions of the prosthesis, if mistakes were made during its manufacture and it is small, the prosthesis will be corrected or replaced with a new one.

With highly sensitive gums, even properly sized removable teeth will irritate the tissues in contact with them. Diet helps to solve this problem, you need to exclude:

  • all spicy foods;
  • food with a viscous, sticky consistency - confectionery creams, condensed milk;
  • fatty fried food.

After each meal, the oral cavity should be rinsed with boiled water or chamomile infusion.

If this does not give the desired results, it makes sense to use special fixing pads that are placed between the gums and removable teeth. They reduce pressure and prevent friction between the two surfaces.

It is impossible to prevent the appearance of abrasions and bruises on the gums - if food remains enter the damaged tissues, foci of infectious inflammation are formed, which threaten serious troubles.

Restoration of chewing function

You need to be prepared for the fact that with new teeth it is necessary learn to bite and chew food again, and the meal itself at first will last much longer.

We'll have to forget about hard and viscous food. Bite off a little bit - do not forget that even an ordinary bun, with which the mouth is stuffed to the eyeballs, in the process of chewing will turn into a sticky mass sticking to the teeth.

It is necessary to understand that the new incisors are the teeth of the prosthesis, and do not try to bite off hard foods with them until the discomfort disappears and the soft tissues stop rubbing.

Chewing food should be even on each side of the mouth, this will help distribute the load on the gums and reduce pain.

Ideal food for developing chewing function - finely chopped apples. They have sufficient rigidity and moderate hardness, which allows you to practice chewing well, without fear of damaging the gums or the prosthesis itself.

Solving problems with increased or decreased salivation

Adaptation to artificial teeth is a purely individual process, the features of which are different for each person. This is especially true for the problem of salivation.

Some patients complain that the mouth is constantly dry, others, on the contrary, that saliva is secreted in excessive quantities.

It should be noted right away that this problem is natural and you should not be afraid of it. Increased salivation is a standard reaction of the body to an irritant, which is a prosthesis placed in the oral cavity.

Within two to three weeks after the installation of new teeth, salivation will return to normal by itself.

To reduce discomfort during the adaptation process, doctors recommend drinking water more often - this can effectively eliminate dry mouth: you need to take a small sip of water every time an unpleasant symptom appears.

To reduce salivation, it is necessary to rinse your mouth with a light salt solution, for the preparation of which half a teaspoon of salt is diluted in a small glass of water. The problem of salivation will be solved for 40-50 minutes, after which the rinse will need to be repeated again.

Solving diction problems

After installing the prosthesis, all people lisp - this is a fact that cannot be avoided. However, lisping can be tolerated during the first weeks of getting used to artificial teeth, but in the future, its presence is considered abnormal.

So that lisping does not become a constant companion, it is necessary to perform daily exercises to restore diction:

  • Read aloud- measuredly, slowly. On the day you need to give the procedure 20-30 minutes. Pronounce words clearly and focus on problematic sounds;
  • repeat tongue twisters- it is not necessary to pronounce them quickly, the main thing is to repeatedly train the pronunciation of words and sounds that are difficult.

Good for restoring diction repeating aloud long words with alternating vowels and consonants- "air crash", "defense", etc.

To train the pronunciation of the deaf sounds “r”, “s”, “sh”, you need to focus on the words where they are repeated: “crazy”, “protecting”, “roofing material”. Write down 20-30 of these words on paper and work with them at the end of the 20-minute reading of the book.

The return of the taste of food

The problem of loss of taste of food is typical for 30-35% of people who have installed removable dentures
. Especially often the deterioration of taste sensations occurs when using budget products, the individual elements of which are made of metal.

The problem is solved by an appropriate psychological attitude - you should not try to swallow food and finish the meal as quickly as possible, on the contrary, it is better to slowly chew each piece of food and try to feel its taste.

At first, this exercise will seem pointless and strange - however, in the process of such training, in 2-3 weeks, the taste buds will become so sensitive that you will be able to notice new shades of taste even in already well-known food.

It is worth noting that the installation of a denture in most cases has a positive effect on the culture of human nutrition - getting used to healthy food in the process of adaptation, the majority retains this useful habit for the rest of their lives.

What to do if adaptation is delayed?

The normal period of getting used to a denture, if it is firmly fixed on your own teeth, is 2-3 weeks. If the prosthesis rests on the gums, the adaptation period increases to six months.

At the same time, getting used to prostheses in the lower jaw takes longer than to artificial teeth in the upper jaw, since the structure is constantly subjected to food pressure and shifts during jaw movements during chewing and during conversation.

Adaptation time depends on two main factors:

  • jaw structure affects the tendency of the prosthesis to shift and fall out;
  • from gum sensitivity depends on how strong tissue irritation will occur when the structure is shifted.

If the discomfort and discomfort after a few weeks after the installation of the prosthesis has not changed, it makes sense to use special adhesive creams to fix the prosthesis on the jaw.

The features of the period of getting used to a removable denture are quite specific - you will need to adhere to many rules, limit yourself in food, pay attention to training diction and chewing.

Careful adherence to all the recommendations given in the article contributes to quick and painless adaptation, as a result of which it is easy to get used to the prosthesis and eventually forget about its existence.

Feelings when wearing different designs

The habituation process depends on how many teeth are missing and what kind of prosthesis is used. Clasp and lamellar options are popular, the adaptation features are as follows:

  • clasp- have an arched frame, are more often used in the absence of several teeth (), as part of metal parts.

    The main complaint of patients is the lack of taste of food, which is facilitated by the metal in the mouth, with time the problem disappears. The sensation of the presence of a foreign body lasts about a week.

  • lamellar- made of acrylic plastic, attached by suction to the gum, in the absence of several teeth, clasps are used.

    In the process of getting used to such prostheses, the following manifestations are considered normal: cheek tension, salivation, nausea and lisp on the first day.

    This lasts up to 5 days, after which the patient begins to learn to chew food. The final addiction occurs in 30-35 days.

    I was lucky, I got used to the prosthesis very quickly. Therefore, I think that a lot depends on the dentist. The second prosthesis was also entrusted to him, and again no problems. Except for a few minor scratches. Then I removed the prosthesis for a day or two, lubricated the gums with Metrogil Denta, the redness passed quickly. Of course, she excluded solid foods from the menu, the prosthesis is not for this.

    Unfortunately, many of my relatives have dentures, and all of them had discomfort during addiction. So, I already understood how professionally you don’t make it, you have to rub it in. Rinsing with infusion of chamomile helps a lot. And also - liquid food at first. My grandmother even corrected my stomach like that by sitting on cereals and soups. So, you can find your pluses in everything 😉

    I lost my teeth early due to gum disease. They crumbled and broke, leaving only the roots. Over a year ago I had a removable prosthesis. The doctor constantly said that there was no need to take them off, but honestly, when there is an opportunity to take them off, and this is usually at home, I take them off. At first there was severe discomfort, a rather large foreign part is in the mouth. From what there was a strong salivation and it was not comfortable. Now I wear it only on the street and at work, I take it off at home, but if there is no severe cold, then I forget about them, but when it is cold, there is pain on the teeth to which it is attached. Therefore, I try not to stay outside for a long time.

    For a long time I have not felt the taste of food, it feels like everything in my mouth is filled with iron, nausea periodically occurs. Lost appetite, depressed. In the clinic where they made my prosthesis, the doctors were taciturn, I chose a cheaper institution, as a result, now I can’t get adequate advice from them, what should I do, maybe I’m even allergic to iron elements ...

    Getting used to the prosthesis, like any other irritant in the body, you need to follow all the rules listed in this article. Adaptation is a normal process that accompanies everything new and incomprehensible compared to the usual state. Our task is to make sure that the new state becomes familiar as soon as possible. Adhering to this principle, I got used to the prosthesis in a few days. Work obliges to be always in shape, otherwise nothing.

    I work as a teacher, in the summer I took up my teeth and put in a prosthesis, I didn’t experience any problems. I seem to be used to it, drooling no longer flows, my gums do not rub, I chew and speak normally. But after going to work, problems began, it turned out to be difficult to talk for many hours without stopping. Tell me what should I do?

Article author: Seregina Darya Sergeevna ( | ) - dentist-therapist, orthodontist. Engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of anomalies in the development of teeth, malocclusion. Also installs braces and plates.

It is the only orthodontic construction that is able to restore the dentition with the loss of all dental units. Thanks to this, dental patients can again enjoy normal chewing of food, restoring chewing functions. This affects the good functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, and also avoids injury to the gums and mucous membranes. But there is one question - how to get used to dentures? Getting used to removable dentures is a very long and difficult process. Prosthetics cannot be called a completed procedure, while the mucous membrane is irritated, and the patient constantly feels discomfort that arises from the contact of artificial teeth with the oral mucosa.

Installation of the structure and the adaptation period are separate independent stages in prosthetics, but are closely interconnected. We can talk about successful prosthetics after the patient has fully adapted to a removable prosthesis. But how to make the process of getting used to a removable prosthesis less painful, and what are the ways to reduce the adaptation time, you can learn from this article.

The period of adaptation to a removable structure begins as soon as the installation procedure is completed in the doctor's office. Almost every patient will experience the difficulties that accompany the adaptation period. Possible difficulties and the reasons for their manifestation:

  1. Vomiting is the reaction of the body to a foreign body, which began to irritate the nerve endings located in the palate. The problem often goes away on its own. However, patients with hypersensitivity may need to abandon such a removable design.
  2. Profuse salivation. The secretion of gastric juice and saliva after putting on the prosthesis is due to the fact that the body begins to perceive the structure instead of food and intuitively prepares for its digestion.
  3. Each patient will face the problem of speech impairment. The construction fills some space of the oral cavity, and the tongue has to change its habitual movements, which is why diction is disturbed. As a rule, it will take about a week to recover.
  4. The patient will begin to feel significant discomfort and difficulties with the first meal. The new design will create an unusual load for the oral cavity on the palate and gums. More precisely, the load is significantly different in its distribution.
  5. Another disappointment is that taste sensations can change or decrease. As a rule, the design of removable dentures has a large base in its area, which covers a large area of the mucosa. Thus, many taste buds become blocked. The patient may not feel hot, spicy, salty, etc. food.

When the adaptation process is normal, all these symptoms disappear autonomously.

Getting used to removable dentures

Removable dentures are installed, and the patient will begin to feel discomfort in any case. For some, these sensations end quickly, while for others, the adaptation process takes place with physical suffering. In this case, the question of how long to get used to dentures arises by itself.

It is difficult to talk about the exact timing of addiction. Many factors are taken into account. For example, how firmly the structure is fixed. A poorly fixed prosthesis will begin to move out and irritate the soft tissues of the gums and mucous membranes. The condition of the gums is taken into account. If they were initially damaged by rubbing against solid food or inflammatory processes, then the adaptation process will drag on for several months. Significantly increase the time from. These systems have metal construction parts that do not spare the soft tissues of the oral cavity.

Another factor that plays a large role in the timing of addiction is the psychological state of the patient. A person who is constantly nervous and tries to remove the system at the first opportunity automatically increases the adaptation period.

In general, the average time to get used to is about thirty days. The above reasons can increase them up to three months. Also, addiction can be delayed for reasons:

  • insufficient fixation of the structure;
  • the patient has atrophy of the jaw (a common cause of this phenomenon is too long a period when the patient refuses to install removable dentures with adentia);
  • the patient has individual features in the structure of the dentoalveolar system.

The reason for the increase in the adaptation time can also be an incorrectly selected design. For example, artificial teeth do not correspond to the desired size, because of which the entire bite is disturbed, and the gums are also rubbed.

The following tips will not completely eliminate the difficulties during the adaptation period, but will significantly reduce the negative impact of prostheses and shorten the time to get used to.

Slow recovery of chewing functions

For many patients, the fear of painful sensations when eating is so great that they reduce their diet as much as possible, switching to liquid soups, yogurts and purees. This decision will not be entirely correct. Chewing loads are an important moment in the period of adaptation to removable dentures. Foods such as apples and pears can be cut into small pieces and chewed slowly without much effort. This will help not to damage the oral mucosa and at the same time get the necessary vitamins. It is better to refrain from nuts, seeds and astringent products in the form of caramels and dried fruits.

gum massage

For quick adaptation to removable dentures, high-quality blood circulation in the gums is very important. Massage will help improve blood circulation and strengthen the gums. Also, massage treatments relieve pain well. Massage can be done independently. Placing the thumb on the inside of the gum, and the index finger on the outer edge, we begin to gently rub and press the gum. With an increase in blood circulation, the gums will again acquire a healthy appearance and elasticity. It is advisable to repeat the procedure regularly, for 15 minutes and several times a day.

Diction exercises

Violation of diction after the installation of prostheses leads many patients to confusion. Not knowing how to behave properly, they just shut up and try to talk less. This should not be done, otherwise you will have to deal with this problem for a very long time. To quickly restore normal pronunciation of sounds, exercises for the language help. There is nothing difficult in them, it will be enough to allocate 4 times 15 minutes a day to pronounce certain words and tongue twisters, as well as read books. Words such as “good”, “arch”, “wasp”, “rainbow”, “rose” are well suited for the exercise. Reading words begins at a slow pace, in a whisper and with sustained articulation. Gradually the tempo increases and the voice intensifies. Instead of saying words, you can read your favorite book. The rules remain the same - starting slowly and quietly, increasing the speed and voice. Another great way is to speak tongue twisters. If everything is done correctly, speech should be restored after a week. If speech remains impaired, it is worth visiting an orthopedic dentist.

Dry mouth

Fight dryness or excessive salivation. There is no special advice in this case. Dryness can be overcome only by frequent drinking of water (preferably in small portions). Excessive salivation should pass on its own, as soon as the body ceases to perceive a foreign body.

Oral injuries

At the initial stage of wearing removable dentures, many patients experience gum injury. A variety of abrasions, wounds are formed, and sometimes. The reasons may lie in an incorrectly installed design, or the prostheses were not well fixed in the oral cavity. It is possible to avoid this. The first time the installation of the structure should take place in front of the mirror. Then it will be possible to consider permissible errors when putting on and make the necessary amendments. If irritation of the mucosa occurs due to poor fixation of the prosthesis, additional fixatives can be used. These funds are available in the form of a powder, glue or ointment. For others, they are not visible, but harmless to the patient's body. The only condition is that every time the prosthesis is removed, the remnants of these funds must be carefully removed from the structure itself and the gums. More information about the method of using fixatives, can tell the attending physician.

Rinsing with decoctions

To strengthen the gums, avoid irritation and disinfect the resulting wounds, decoctions of herbs from sage, chamomile, etc. will help. Rinsing the mouth with decoctions should take place no more than three times a day. Decoction is preferably used at room temperature.

Fighting gag reflexes

This condition is especially disturbing for impatient and nervous patients. Some, a few days after the installation of a removable prosthesis, despair and refuse to further use the design. Should not be doing that. Often removing the prosthesis, the adaptation period increases. You can help yourself by breathing deeply through your nose, sucking on lollipops, rinsing your mouth with saline. You need to try to distract yourself from the existing problem, switch to reading a book, watching an interesting program, or doing your favorite hobby. After a few days, the discomfort will become less noticeable, and after a week it will completely disappear. Do not forget - the effectiveness of the entire process of prosthetics will depend not only on the doctor or the type of construction. How all recommendations are implemented and difficulties are overcome plays a big role.

We do not shoot at night

As a rule, they are placed in water or a disinfectant solution. But in order to shorten the adaptation period, dentists advise leaving the structure in the oral cavity for the first time. This time the gums are in a calm state. They will not be subjected to physical pressure and the process of adaptation will accelerate.

Strongly influences the terms of getting used to the removable structure of its hygiene. Remains of food that have fallen under the prosthesis can irritate the mucous membrane, rubbing and contributing to the formation of wounds. Therefore, it must be appropriate.

Prosthesis care as a guarantee of quick adaptation to the system

For a person who is used to following all the rules of oral hygiene, there will be nothing difficult in caring for removable dentures. In addition to the usual procedures, you will need to learn a few new rules:

  1. Rinsing the mouth after eating is a common procedure. Patients with removable dentures will need to rinse the structure itself. To do this, it will be sufficient to remove it from the mouth and clean it from food debris under running water.
  2. In the mornings and evenings, the prosthesis is cleaned with a paste and a brush. Hygiene accessories are selected according to the material that was used to manufacture the system. Most often these are brushes with soft bristles and antibacterial pastes. During the procedure itself, one should not forget about the internal part of the system. It is this area that is more exposed to the accumulation of microorganisms that can cause inflammation of the gums.
  3. For additional disinfection of the structure, you will need to purchase additional funds. More often they are issued in the form. Such a tablet dissolves in 150 mg of water, where the system falls. Fifteen minutes will be enough to destroy all microorganisms on the prosthesis.

If following all the above rules, the time for getting used to the prostheses is not reduced, you need to consult a doctor. Perhaps the problem lies in the individual structure of the jaw. Also, do not endure severe pain. This may be an indication that the design was not made correctly. Patients who cannot overcome pain will have to endure the construction for at least 3 hours before seeing the dentist. Otherwise, the doctor will not be able to determine the problem and correct it.
