Before, perhaps, we will have to answer another question: what is a gramophone?
After all, you hardly saw this car. But, probably, you know from the stories of your parents about the gramophone. So, the gramophone is almost the same. Only in appearance he was different. A large tin horn with a bell protruded from the top of the gramophone.

Then came the portable gramophone. Instead of a box, they made a convenient lockable suitcase with a carrying handle. The mouthpiece was turned into a snail and hidden inside the suitcase. It turned out much nicer and more comfortable. For the first time, such a portable gramophone was produced by the French company Pathe Brothers. They named it by their last name "Patefon", or "Patefon". Gramophone records are still called gramophone records.

The gramophone and gramophone replaced the turntable and radiogram, and they were replaced by tape recorders.
The ancestor of the player - the gramophone appeared long ago, at the end of the 19th century.

There was no film, radio, or television back then. Only living people sang. It never occurred to anyone that the machine could also sing. And even the inventor of the "singing machine" Thomas Alva Edison himself had some doubts: will he sing or not sing?

The mechanic made an incomprehensible apparatus according to Edison's drawing. All laboratory staff gathered. Over to try! Edison put a wax-covered roller into the apparatus, cleared his throat, and hesitantly sang an old children's song:
"Our Mary has a ram, he's more like a dog. Wherever Mary goes, the ram follows her!"

The staff giggled. Edison had no talent for singing. But it was too late to retreat, and he sang the song to the end. Then he put the needle at the beginning of the track on the wax roller and twisted the handle. And then a miracle happened. The car sang! Not the one or two obscure words Edison hoped to hear. No, the whole song, from beginning to end, poured out of a black mouthpiece!

The employees froze. Then they shouted in delight, danced in a round dance around Edison and his wonderful invention. Then all at once, interrupting each other, began to speak, shout, sing into the mouthpiece. All night until morning they recorded and listened to their voices. Indeed, on the first Edison apparatus, it was possible not only to listen to the sound, but also to record it. But this device - it was called a phonograph - sounded much worse than the current gramophone. The sound was quiet, intermittent, rattling in places. But still, it was an unheard-of miracle!

Later, this miracle became the most common thing. Looking carefully at the gramophone record, you can see that the grooves on it are uneven. They are dotted with convolutions, and for long-playing records - indentations. As the record rotates, the stylus slides along the groove. Convolutions or depressions make her tremble, hesitate. These vibrations are sound.

Gramophone - do it yourself

You can make the simplest pickup yourself - a device that reproduces a gramophone record. To do this, you only need a sheet of drawing paper, a thick needle and a little glue.

Cut out a square with a side of 30-40 cm from paper. Roll a "pound" out of this square, as shown in the figure.

The top of the "pound" should be in one of the corners of the square. Lay the sides one on top of the other and carefully glue them with carpentry or casein glue.

Put on the "pound" in the place of gluing paper clip. Put it with a seam on the table and press down the gluing from the inside with weights. In this position, leave to dry until morning.

Stick the needle near the end of the dried "pound". Pierce through both walls. Just first carefully look at the figure, what should be the correct inclination of the needle. Secure the needle with a drop of glue or sealing wax.

Take the pickup by the protruding corner of the "pounder" and lower the needle onto the groove of the rotating record. "Funtik" will sing!

Of course your homemade pickup will sound much worse than the factory. Not so loud, not so clear. But Edison's first phonograph sounded about the same.

Has come late fall. The ground was covered with an autumn carpet.

This inspired me to create an autumn gramophone and writing a poem

*Autumn Melody*

Autumn melody, in the sound gramophone

It will sadly remind us of separation

On an old record.

Exciting. fluttering sounds.

Overflows carry away into distant dreams

Under the rustle of golden leaves.

Magical motives inspire sadness

In the soul of the memories of the past.

Dream, love, filled the soul

Bursting into the melancholy of hearts with a gentle moan

And autumn melody enchants

Sounding over the lonely gramophone.

One of my little dreams came true: I got a gramophone. And even though it is quite tiny, but no one has it for sure. It is made by hand. So there is a new addition to my collection of miniature handmade items.

Nowadays, the gramophone can be found only in museums, antique shops and collectors. If someone keeps it at home, then most likely as an element of decor, and not as a player. And some 100 years ago there was a real gramophone boom that swept many countries. Everyone wanted to own this miracle of technology.

I suggest you create your own miniature gramophone. I think that for lovers of doll miniatures, the master class will be useful.

Let's get started. By tradition, I chose the prototype (on the left). It turned out quite similar (on the right).

For work, I needed: thick paper, a napkin, wire (10-12 mm thick), pva glue, transparent super glue, office glue stick for paper, acrylic paint different colors.

Master class on creating a paper puppet gramophone:

1. The most noticeable detail of the gramophone is the sound amplifier, it is also called an acoustic pipe or a horn. I made it out of paper. I can’t tell you the exact weight of the paper, but it is definitely thicker than regular office paper with a density of 80 g / m2. Details cut out according to the above scheme in the amount of 10 pieces.

2. Using a glue stick, I glued all the details. It's not as easy as it might seem. It took a LOT of effort to achieve smooth curves. It turned out the top bulky part of the pipe

3. In order to make a smaller part of the horn, I twisted a narrow dense cone (4-5 layers of paper). Aligned the edge and curved, imitating the lower curved part of the sound amplifier. After connecting with glue the upper and lower parts.

4. To attach the pipe to the body, I used a small piece of wire with a loop at one end. I put the finished mouthpiece into the loop and glued it with super glue.

5. Using pva glue and pieces of a napkin, I increased the density of the pipe and at the same time hid the gluing points.

7. Since my gramophone was conceived as an antique thing, for the effect of aging, it was partially covered with blue-green paint.

8. The last stage of painting. I took decorative acrylic paint in old copper color. Painted the mouthpiece with a dry brush. To heighten the effect, I wiped some places with a napkin so that I could see through blue paint. It turned out almost a real copper patina.

9. Now let's take care of the body. I cut it out of the same paper as the mouthpiece. (schemes are given below). It turned out a box 45 by 45 mm with a height of 15 mm.

10. Additionally, I cut out several squares with sides of 47 and 49 mm, which I pasted on top and bottom of the box. And finishing touch: small squares 5 by 5 mm in the amount of 4 pieces as legs.

11. There is a small decor on the front of the box. To achieve similarity with the original, I propose the following scheme of elements. Although the decor can not be done.

12. The next step is the primer. Usually for these purposes I use a white matte ceiling paint. But ordinary white acrylic paint will do.

13. To achieve an imitation of wood on paper, after the primer had dried, I covered the box with red paint. Then I needed brown acrylic paint and a large dry brush. I wiped off excess paint on a napkin and with an almost clean brush, leading it in only one direction, carried it through the box. It turned out quite similar to the structure of a tree.

14. The mechanism that triggers the spring system, I made of wire. By dipping one end of the wire into nail polish, you can get a neat pen.

Since January 2014, in addition to the endless book, I have had another creative project- a papier-mâché gramophone for Sasha's performance. It is a pity that during this period I did not write in a diary phased work above him. Now that everything is behind me, I would read these entries with interest.
But if we take and restore the chronology, we get a tragicomedy with geography in several parts.
PART 1. THE BEGINNING.
...somewhere on February 22, Angelina and I gathered in her hostel and started working on the gramophone (it will be a memorable day when we started a creative tandem). She was very optimistic, saying that we would do it in three weekends and in mid-March we would go for a walk in St. Petersburg.

For work we needed:

  1. printouts of gramophone pictures found on the internet

  2. shoe box - 1 pc. - gramophone base

  3. plasticine - a few kg - we make a matrix from it, from which we will remove the form.

  4. wire - a few meters - frame for the horn

  5. pliers, breadboard knife, nails

The wire just wasn't there. We begged for a few thin twigs from the sculpting students in the next room. Were happy with the booty and kind people. Work became more fun. They attached the frame of the connecting tube of the bell to the box and covered it with plasticine.

The next weekend I arrived with a package of wires different thickness. When making the frame of the horn, we decided that the matrix should be solid in order to remove 3 forms of papier-mâché (!!!) from it, and then paint them. And then we will get not just gramophones, but art objects. We will give one masterpiece to Sasha, and leave the rest for ourselves.

The first days of our joint work were as the saying goes:
"- We plowed!" - Said the fly, getting off the horse. This very fly I was, because. Lina did almost everything, and I only served, held, followed instructions.
She is a sculptor, she knows.

PART 2. QUICKLY ONLY CATS ARE BORN

A mounth later. I came almost every Saturday to Link and the gramophone. More than the promised 3 weekends have passed, and work on it was still going on and there was no end in sight. In Lina, optimism began to decrease, which worried me very much. After all, if she doesn’t know, then I don’t know what and how to do next. We are no longer talking about 3 forms.
There were also problems with plasticine. Under its weight, the frame sagged and the speaker fell. We built on all sorts of fortifications, which briefly saved our hopeless situation.
But we did not give up and continued to do our job.

And in the breaks we had Lunch. Yes, yes, with a capital letter. Lina approached cooking very creatively. All ingredients were selected by color, content. To be not only beautiful, tasty, but also useful. She still failed to make a vegetarian out of me, because. every time I came with my canned goods :))

Flew some more weekends in which Lina and I did not meet. There were important things for me, then for her.
She reassured me that there was still a lot of work in rehearsals and we had more than enough time.
She is an actress there. She knows.
Everything could have been so if Sasha had not clearly indicated to us the deadlines.

April. Came again to Lina and the gramophone.
According to the plan:

  1. Finishing the matrix

  2. coat the entire gramophone with melted wax

  3. glue the pieces of paper soaked in water in layers

Our mouthpiece looked like the Shukhov Tower

Then a dragon or a scaly fish

Everything that was in the plan, we did everything. Lina promised that she would paste the layers of paper herself. And then I'll come to her to take off the uniform. And after the weekend we will quickly paint it. In short, a month of work is the ceiling.

PART 3. CHEF, EVERYTHING IS LOST: THE PLASTER IS REMOVED, THE CLIENT LEAVES

On April 28, Lina called and said that she was going home urgently. Force Majeure. Will be back May 10th. And then he will continue intensive work on our musical apparatus. And we need it by May 18th.
In the evening of the same day, the gramophone traveled by taxi from the Timiryazevsky district to the city of Odintsovo.
On the morning of April 29, I unpacked it and began to look at it from all sides. The work has been done, but the result - fie and no. The first thing I did was to remove the first paper layer from the horn, and then the plasticine, exposing the wire frame. How to correct the mistakes made - I do not know. One wish - out of his sight! It was embarrassing to look at this unit. It didn't turn out the way Linka and I saw it. But the sky knows that in our imagination it was a beautiful object. It seemed to me that now this shame is seen not only by my parents, but also by people from neighboring windows of houses. You can't show it to anyone. And even more so to put on stage.
In the evening, I glued another shoe box to the base. She asked the neighbors for a piece of cardboard from which she made a disk for the record. Increased the mouthpiece by one ring. After that, the silhouette of the gramophone began to be guessed. But the bell still held poorly and fell.
April 30. I broke (intentionally, not accidentally) the horn. The gramophone is gone.
Sasha better not say anything about it.

PART 4. SECOND LIFE

On the morning of May 1, I went to the dacha with my parents.
Options regarding the future fate of the gramophone = 0.
All day I thought up a speech that I would say to Sasha when she finds out that on the eve of the general run, I flunked her whole case.

  1. gramophone printouts

  2. Styrofoam

  3. breadboard knife (in the absence of such, it was replaced by a kitchen knife)

  4. PVA glue, a lot of newspapers - for papier-mâché

From a sheet construction foam cut out an 8-and-hedron, diameter = 45 cm

then two more octahedrons, 35 and 25 cm

"Combed" the edges

Here is the shape of the horn. Newspapers absorb water well
and ready for the first, glueless layer.

By May 9, the horn was attached to the base. Dad fixed the frame of the base and now everything is holding relatively tight. Will it only survive 3 drops? (so according to the script)

12 layers of finely chopped pieces of newspaper on the speaker, and 4 (?) layers
paper pulp (made up of soaked cheap toilet paper) on the box.

PART 5. WHAT DOES THE GRAMOPHONE HIDE IN ITSELF?

On May 9, I showed Sasha the gramophone. I was very afraid of her resume. Although by this time she already knew about all our difficulties, the result might not satisfy her. And then it would be pointless to make excuses, and there would no longer be a chance to form a good opinion about yourself.
While we were walking from her house to mine, and this is through the whole city of Odintsovo, I crossed my fingers behind my back, as in childhood. And before her eyes were the costumes sewn by her hands for the actors participating in the performance. They seemed perfect to me, and my gramophone was a creation crazy hands. But Sasha seemed to like the device, because. This photo was taken on her phone. Or maybe she thought that at least it would be like that, than nothing ...
