Delightful tulips are an unsurpassed source of spring colors. From hundreds of different varieties, it is easy to choose variations of early, medium and late flowering periods, all kinds of shades and the most incredible shapes. And even a uniform bed of simple red flowers is a stunning sight, ardently and proudly marking the arrival of spring.

The breeders who made efforts to create varieties from which the eighth class of tulips was formed, initially did not even suspect about the results that they would receive in the process of work. And today, representatives of the class of green-colored tulips cause surprise and admiration. These are unusual flowers with an exotic color, which makes them especially decorative.

A bit of history

The class of green-colored ones was created relatively recently, and has not yet managed to grow quantitatively in a short period of time. At the time when it was created, scientists managed to find and combine only 32 varieties into it. All this happened in 1981, but after a few years, interest in such varieties increased, and breeders began to consider the possibility of developing a class. However, there is evidence that the very first tulips, reminiscent of representatives of this class in external characteristics, existed at the very beginning of the 20th century.

However, the idea of development of the class was not crowned with success - the problems with the creation of green-flowered varieties were that they were all the result of an impact on already existing varieties the strongest mutagenic factors. The result is an exotic color, but the modified tulips, acquiring increased decorativeness, received along with it a number of disadvantages.

To date, green-colored tulips are not the most popular, they are practically not grown for commercial purposes, but they can be found in botanical gardens, in landscape design in combination with other varieties. Representatives of this class are very popular in landscaping small flower beds, decorating alpine slides and curbs.

Green-colored tulips general description.

The class of green-colored tulips combines varieties that are distinguished by the presence of one characteristic feature only for them - green shading on the outside of the petals. To date, there are a lot of different colors, but all have a wide green stripe that contrasts with the main shade.

Representatives of the class grow up to a maximum of 80 cm - there are taller varieties, and there are low ones. The stems are standard - upright, not branched and rarely leafy. Flowering, in almost all varieties, is single. The shape of the flowers, depending on the variety, may differ - they are lily-colored or goblet-shaped. The basal rosette is formed from narrow and long leaves, entire, light green in color.

It is impossible not to mention the shortcomings of the class, because of which it never became too popular - green varieties are rarely grown commercially, although they are very decorative and suitable for cutting. The problem with these varieties is that their resistance to variegation virus has been weakened by the mutagenic factors that led to the creation of this class. In addition, flowers are more demanding and need special care.

Flowering time

The eighth class of tulips is included in the group, which is characterized by late deadline flowering. Therefore, in order to observe the opening of buds, you need to wait until the second half of May, when the soil and air will already be well warmed up by the sun. The duration of flowering is not the same for all varieties, but on average, open flowers can be observed within 2-2.5 weeks.

Popular varieties

A few varieties of the eighth grade are used in landscaping, are very popular in urban landscape design - they adorn parks and city gardens in Europe and other countries. For the design of flower beds, alpine slides, flower beds, these varieties are also used quite often. They are great for forcing and cutting. What do the most popular varieties of the class look like and what are special about?

Tulip variety Artist (Artist).

This flower is planted, as a rule, in the foreground, since it does not differ tall- the maximum is able to stretch 50-55 cm, no more. The stems are thin, but dense, erect, surrounded by a thin basal rosette of long, narrow leaves. It blooms once, not earlier than mid-May.

When will it be installed warm weather, reveals lily-shaped flowers, with bent outwards, pointed tips of the petals. The edges of the petals are painted in a pinkish-red hue, and the middle is underlined by a wide stripe-stroke, green. Tulip variety Spring Green (see photo) is a very beautiful spring flower with a delicate color. This is a great option for spring bouquets, landscaping, as well as an excellent variety for group compositions in combination with scarlet and pink varieties. The maximum duration of the flowering phase for this variety is 2 weeks. The flower is about 6-8 cm high, the petals are bent outwards. The middle of the petal is green, and the shade becomes thicker and brighter closer to the bottom, and in the upper part the stroke becomes sharper and brighter. The margins of the petals are white. The Spring Green variety has a higher multiplication factor compared to others.

Tulip variety Greenland.

Tulip variety Greenland (see photo) - very popular in Holland, used in urban gardening, in group compositions, in gardens and parks. The flower is special in that it is overly sensitive to the sun, and exposure to the rays leads to fading and a shortening of the flowering period. The growth of the Greenland tulip is a maximum of 60 cm, no more. The height of lily-shaped flowers is up to 7-8 cm.

The flowers are very decorative - the middle of their petals is pierced by a bright green stroke, and the edges of a pale pinkish hue. Planting material must be disinfected, and it is also important to ensure that the soil is not infected - this variety does not have disease resistance. It is planted in the middle of autumn, and for a successful wintering in regions with a harsh climate, it is necessary to cover the soil area above the bulbs.

Tulip variety China Town (China Town).

The China Town tulip variety (see photo) is the shortest representative of the green-colored class. The height of the plant is not more than 40 cm, and this characteristic distinguishes it from the rest. The flowers also do not differ in large sizes - they reach a height of about 6-7 cm, but their color makes them very decorative.

Variegated petals are painted in 2 colors - in the center there is a bright, saturated green stroke, and the edges are a soft pinkish hue. The tips of the petals are pointed, they are slightly bent outward when the flower opens. Representatives of this variety are well suited for forcing. The China Town variety tolerates frost well in the soil and is not prone to disease.

Tulip variety Golden Artist (Golden Artist).

The tulip variety Golden Artist (see photo) is a small-flowered masterpiece that was recently created by Dutch breeders. According to its external characteristics, it is very similar to another green-flowered variety - an artist, but at the same time it differs in color. Golden Artist grows up to 40-50 cm, its flowers are no more than 5-6 cm in height. The stems are not leafy, around them are basal leaves, dense, long and narrow.

The main feature of the Golden Artist tulip is its unusual color. The dense fabric of the bent petals combines several shades. Middle outside petals are colored green. The stroke is not uniform, blurry, smoothly turning into a contrasting yellow-golden hue of the edge of the petals.

Tulip cultivar Florosa.

Tulip variety Florosa (see photo) blooms later than all other varieties. Therefore, it is especially appreciated by flower growers, because it closes the flowering season of these early flowers. Florosa is an exotic mutated variety of tulips that was bred in Holland. It grows up to 50 cm, has a standard structure of the stem and basal leaves.

The color of the petals is considered unusual - several shades harmoniously complement each other. The very center of the petal is painted in juicy, green tint. This central stroke diverges and the green tint fades. Directly the edge of the petal is light, and between this border and the stroke is a pinkish color. Due to its short stature, the variety is used only in the foreground in group flower arrangements.
