Kitsch in clothes. Kitsch style: features, history, interesting facts and recommendations. Kitsch accessories

Going against the system and mocking mass culture is the lot of kitsch. Bright, eclectic, but certainly alluring kitsch-style interior is a godsend for true informals who challenge a conservative society.

Distinctive features of kitsch style

Kitsch from him. Kitsch - hack, bad taste, "cheap" is modern style, interior design, in which fakes border on great art, “beautifulness” replaces real beauty, and “rich” decor mercilessly ridicules aesthetics, natural naturalness and harmony.

The kitsch style in the interior is inherent:

Despite the seeming goofiness of the kitsch style, the designers fell in love with the very idea of "art for art's sake" and they divided the kitsch style into three categories: pseudo-luxurious kitsch, lumpen kitsch and designer kitsch. If the first two options are the work of homegrown designers, then last option is a way of self-expression, a dialectic of the system and the individual. If you have an idea to embody the kitsch style in your interior, contact the professionals, otherwise your home threatens to become a haven for the insane.

Kitsch lighting

Down with chandeliers and boring sconces on the walls! Kitsch is an abundance of light different colors, directions and forms. The best decision for kitsch, it is a combination of a chandelier with a high-tech lamp and a diode lamp covered with an embroidered lampshade.

Kitsch furniture

Eclecticism (a combination of the incongruous) needs kitsch in everything: from fluffy carpets decorated with cat faces to sofas with leather seats and colorful pillows. Lumpen kitsch will allow you to combine furniture found in a junkyard with your own “stocks”, but designer kitsch will require an expensive and elegant fireplace next to a chair that looks like the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones.

Kitsch does not put forward any requirements for furniture, unlike, for example, the Empire style. The main requirement here is eclecticism.

Kitsch accessories

Accessories are good, if you know how to choose them correctly. This has nothing to do with Kitsch! Styrofoam columns, pseudo-stucco, figurines and fountains, shelves, carton boxes instead of cabinets and an abundance of tasteless daub on the walls - a vivid fantasy of the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland.

Kitsch finish

The main color of the kitsch style is red, but kitsch would not be such a revolutionary style, limiting itself to simple brightness! Combine painted walls with a mosaic floor, cover the ceiling with linoleum - you're done, you are a real "kitcher".

Kitsch style and a small "BUT"

Kitsch style is a struggle with modern culture, which is aimed at achieving material wealth and demonstrating it without any meaning. Counterfeits of art, use of cheap materials is not a sign of a distraught designer, it is an attempt to break through the veil of empty but shining promises, hopes and the appearance of life.

The choice of kitsch should be a logical completion of your image, but not a fashionable addition for Instagram, because it is simply impossible to live in such an interior for a long time.

If you like the combination of incongruous, make expensive designer kitsch. It will not look ridiculous and flashy, but will emphasize your independence and maturity, albeit not in the way that it manifests itself in others.

For someone, clothes are an opportunity to demonstrate their well-being, the presence of taste and a sense of proportion, or commitment to some fashion style. And for someone - a way of self-expression, an opportunity to stand out, to be different from everyone else. And it is not at all necessary to spend a lot of money on it, or run kilometers in search of a unique thing. To attract the attention of others, it is enough, for example, to wear poisonous yellow tights, a short lace skirt purple, on the nose to fasten huge black glasses in a pink frame.

Someone will frown and say: “What bad taste! Kitsch!" And someone will exclaim: “Wow! How stylish! Brightness, a combination of incongruous, a shocking heap of details from different styles, deliberate shocking - this is kitsch.

The history of the formation of kitsch style

This word, translated from German, means bad taste, cheap stuff. The very term "kitsch" originally had to do mainly with objects of art, primarily decorative and applied. As expected, this word appeared back in the 60s of the XIX century in the art markets of Munich, where, along with works of art, many cheap fakes and products were sold that met the undemanding taste of the townsfolk.

Later, kitsch began to be called any too bright, conspicuous, but tasteless things of poor quality. And connoisseurs of works of art and high fashion treated manifestations of kitsch with disdain, considering it to be what it was originally - bad taste.

However, in the 80s of the XX century, the situation changed and the formation of a whole trend in fashion began, which began to be called the word "kitsch". The legislators of this style are extraordinary young people who are prone to shocking, with the help of which they protest against generally accepted norms and the established dress code.

Juicy and "acidic" colors, sparkles and a touch of glamour, thickly let down eyes and bright lips immediately made this style a noticeable phenomenon in fashion. It was the brightness and originality that attracted the attention of pop and screen stars to kitsch. And kitsch left the yards and youth parties on the stage and catwalks. Among the most famous followers of this style are Lady Gaga, Andrey Bertnev, Zhanna Aguzarova, Amy Winehouse, Madonna.

Style Features

What is characteristic of the kitsch style?

  • Outrageous. Clothing - a combination of objects, accessories or a combination of colors - should not only attract attention, but amaze and shock.
  • Sentimentality. "Sweet" or acidic, excessive bright colours, an abundance of "children's" jewelry and details: bows, hairpins with flowers, sunglasses resembling compound eyes of a dragonfly, or in the form of hearts, shapeless bags with ruffles and flowers, multi-colored plastic bracelets, etc.
  • Imaginary luxury, an abundance of gold-like metal, artificial glass stones, tinsel and sparkles. And the associated vulgarity and pomposity.
  • Fake, imitation famous brands, intentionally fake jewelry. Fake is not hidden, it is an integral part of the style.
  • Excess, abundance in everything. Too bright fabrics, too many decorations, overly pretentious style, etc.

It would seem that kitsch is the style of the layman who wants to splurge, the style of consumer goods, pretending to be real values and works of art. It was so in the first years and even decades of its appearance. But already in the 60-70s, the kitsch style began to win its place in the wardrobe of pop stars, top models and other "public" people. Moreover, he attracted the attention of famous fashion designers, for example, the famous John Galliano.

Of course, clothes from collections in the style of kitsch are not very suitable for Everyday life. But the value of this style, first of all, is that it allows any person who wants to stand out from the crowd to demonstrate a creative approach to the formation of his own inimitable, unique image.

Kitsch, aka kitsch. Many have heard this definition more than once, which is mainly applicable to the style of the interior or pieces of furniture. I propose to understand what is hidden behind kitsch, how to distinguish it and how to use it, and how simple hack differs from the common style in design.

Nowadays, kitsch can be found anywhere: on the stage, the podium, in films and even on the streets of the city. Remember Lady Gaga and her style. Glamor, sequins, eye-catching incompatibility of colors and objects, flashy, gaudy outfits, and even makeup - nothing more than kitsch. High fashion also does not hesitate to turn to bad taste. For example, John Galliano uses kitsch in his shows, demonstrating the aerobatics of using vulgarity in fashion.

From mass bad taste to a fashion trend

It is generally accepted that the word comes from the German "kitsch", which means vulgarity, bad taste, hack-work. Accordingly, vulgar and non-functional objects of mass culture, which had a status value and were mass-produced, can be attributed to kitsch. But at the same time, they are attractive examples of design and are admired by a large number of people.

Kitsch was most widely used in the 1950s. Then they began to produce "junk" plastic products, copying samples of "high" design, inaccessible to the average consumer. Among other things, the popularity of kitsch could be explained by the lack of some people's own taste. Behind kitsch, it is easy to hide an undeveloped aesthetic sense, filling the house with things, each of which is full of things and insistently demands attention.

    • Kitsch as a phenomenon is opposed to high, aristocratic, expensive art. In Clement Greenberg's book Avant-Garde and Kitsch, this concept has been greatly expanded to include advertising, "cheap" literature, music, and films. He wrote: “... simultaneously with the advent of the avant-garde in the industrial West, a second cultural phenomenon arose, the very one to which the Germans gave the wonderful name "kitsch": commercial art and literature designed for the masses, with their inherent colors, magazine covers, illustrations, advertising, reading, comics, pop music, recording dances, Hollywood movies, etc. etc.".

Together with the development of postmodernism, kitsch takes on the form of a creative movement. He is exalted for his openness, and he finds a field for realization within the avant-garde. Kitsch objects began to be used in interiors to give a special effect precisely because of their bad taste. Outrageous, imaginary luxury and denial of authority - these are the main trump cards of kitsch.

      Style Features

      1. Removal, isolation of objects from their natural environment.

      2. Vulgarity. Bombast. Banality. Falsity. If, after looking at the subject, you want to express yourself in such words, then most likely you have kitsch in front of you.

      3. Rough and deliberate mixing of different styles.

      4. Screaming color mixing.

      5. An overabundance of decor.

      5. Often a fake or a simple imitation of art.

Objects are not born "kitsch", but become

Many objects in the process of evolution of culture and society have become kitsch. An example is Philip Stark's Juicy Salif citrus press. Created in 1990, it has become a design classic. The aluminum tripod gained popularity so quickly that it was found in every fashion establishment and every interior style article. But few people really used it for its intended purpose, and if they did, then no more than two times. Being an impractical item, Juicy Salif has become just a decoration kitchen worktop and acquired the status of kitsch.

      Commerce Tool

Today, kitsch has become a good commercial tool in the media, art and design, turning into an original phenomenon and attracting everyone's attention. That is, he does not copy samples of past years and does not vulgarize them, but creates something new.

Kitsch is an irony over itself and a vivid example of how the phenomenon of mass distribution of cheap copies has become a model of skillful design, emphasizing the status of the consumers themselves.

And so that you can better distinguish kitsch from other design, here are some examples of its manifestation in different areas:

Kitsch is what they call everything that is bright, shiny, flashy, obsessive and deliberately vulgar. Kitsch (from German kitsch - "hack", "cheap") entered our lives not yesterday and not the day before yesterday. At all times there have been unfortunate artists who briskly traded unpretentious autumn landscapes or scenes from the life of carefree shepherdesses and puffy bathers, buffoons sang and danced in the backyards of opera houses, unscrupulous graphomaniacs diligently supplied the reading public with opuses called Nightmare Death and Fatal Love ".

True connoisseurs of beauty treated any base crafts with disdain. Art for aristocrats and entertainment for plebeians existed separately, almost without overlapping - except that in Russia the bar loved to invite gypsy ensembles to their name days. The situation changed drastically only in the 20th century - democratic orders were established in developed countries, class inequality disappeared, and the middle class multiplied and flourished.

The generation that grew up after the Second World War turned out to be proud, defiant, fearless, nihilistic and selfish. It did not remember the horrors of the war, the parents cherished and cherished their children, they were not denied anything. The ungrateful children craved bread and circuses and at the same time openly despised their fathers - allegedly for their conformism, hypocrisy and retrogradeness.

After Salvador Dali painted on Gioconda his trademark curlicue mustache, and Andy Warhol presented a cycle of still lifes with tin cans and photographic portraits of Marilyn Monroe, painted in all the colors of the rainbow, kitsch became a full-fledged genre of art - and at the same time its gravedigger. The concepts of mass culture and pop art appeared. The era of consumption and aggressive advertising began, an era in which art was finally and irrevocably put on a commercial stream, and any author's research of irreconcilable geniuses became fashionable consumer goods in the shortest possible time. Many talented cultural figures began to simplify and customize their works to the taste of the crowd - not only and not so much for profit, but simply to expand the audience.

The denial of decorum and conventions, the compatibility of the incongruous - these are the basic principles of kitsch. As an independent style, kitsch quickly penetrated into all spheres of culture and art - into painting (Odd Nerdrum, Vladimir Tretchikov), design (the same Warhol), literature (Georges Simenon, Francoise Sagan), poetry (E. Yevtushenko), music (" Jesus Christ Superstar" by E.-L. Webber), cinema ("Barbarella" by Roger Vadim). Someone played a more subtle game - with the help of deceptively rude forms, he denounced and ridiculed the boulevard and bad taste (writer Umberto Eco, film director Jerzy Hoffman). Like, kitsch is kicked out by kitsch. The kitsch aesthetics of the 60s are cleverly played up in the recent film trilogy about Austin Powers.

A separate song is kitsch and the fashion industry.

At the turn of the 60s and 70s, the hippie movement was rapidly gaining momentum in the world. "Children of the Sun" stood up for a bond with nature and dyed their clothes with natural, environmentally friendly dyes borrowed from Hispanic Indians and people from China, India and Southeast Asia. As a result, their robes are full of bright, "acid" shades, merging into bizarre patterns.

The image of hippies was willingly tried on by their sworn antagonists - yuppies. Kitsch was most clearly manifested in men's fashion, usually discreet and conservative. Men flaunted in flared trousers and colorful shirts with lace cuffs, for some reason turned shirt collars over jackets, and even allowed themselves to wear formal business suits with sneakers.

Having absorbed the hooligan, provocative and completely devoid of gender differences punk, kitsch smoothly flowed into the 80s - the years of the wholesale feminization of men, when the representatives of the stronger sex began not only to wear girlish banana slacks with huge pockets and tie blood-red ties, but comb your hair and even put on make-up.

Then, in the 80s, female kitsch also flourished. Leggings-leggings of lemon, light green, azure and raspberry colors under riveted mini-skirts, carnival sequins on the lips and cheeks, thickly let down eyes and golden crosses in the ears ... The current high-society glamor with its stupid rhinestones and monotonous pink blouses is just faded dullness compared to the daring folk fashion of twenty and thirty years ago.

In Russia, according to a long tradition, the word "lubok" or "philistine trinkets" was more often used. Lurid nesting dolls with absent expressions, penny "Palekh" caskets and kondo "Gzhel", wooden bears hugging a bottle of vodka - all this rubbish is still a hit with foreign tourists. Just like the Russians - Western garden gnomes, photo frames a la rococo or plaster figurines pissing boys and praying angels.

We also had our own unique kitsch - purely for internal use. In the late 50s, legendary dudes poured into the street. In the 60s, parrot style "outfits" were replaced by harsh Hemingway sweaters with a collar to the chin, but the cult of corn reigned - songs were composed about it, films were made, it was even hung on a Christmas tree in the form New Year's toys. And also on a wide variety of objects - from sharpeners and alarm clocks to vacuum cleaners and tape recorders - they applied images of space rockets and celestial bodies (primarily Saturn, it is with a ring, cool).

In the 70s, suspicious types roamed the trains, all as one deaf-mute (oh really?) And offered self-made calendar cards with portraits of Vysotsky, Mireille Mathieu and Comrade Stalin - a strange company, but kitsch is always chaotic and paradoxical. And among the yard idlers, it was considered the highest chic to stick a decal with some unknown GDR fraulein on a moped or on a guitar, not very pretty and well-dressed, but, as it was considered, "terribly sexy."

In the 80s, the younger brothers of those same slapaevs dressed in hand-welded and ruthlessly torn jeans, T-shirts with skulls and leather jackets. In the 90s, they put on rings-nuts and raspberry jackets, in the 2000s they jumped into Bentleys and Maybachs and drove off to "study" in England or "recover their health" in Courchevel - to the envy of mere mortals who dream of even touching the world with their little finger rich and famous and snatch, albeit small and trifling, but still attributes of an earthly paradise.

In the 21st century, kitsch has not disappeared anywhere, it has not become just a cute vintage fun. In literature, an unpleasant word was replaced by a beautiful and mysteriously meaningless term "postmodernism", and not every reader realizes that the "glamorous" Lena Lenina and the "anti-glamorous" Sergei Minaev, the "primitive" Daria Dontsova and the "intellectual" Boris Akunin, "mysterious" Dan Brown and "twilight" Stephenie Meyer - one field of berries. Quentin Tarantino films, especially " Crime novel" — pure water kitsch. Outrageous performances of Oleg Kulik's "Dog Man" and freak Andrey Bartenev are the most terry kitsch hiding under the guise of avant-garde. Pop singer Lady Gaga main icon modern kitsch. It is gratifying when the suppliers of kitsch treat their work with a fair amount of self-irony - perhaps this is the main difference between kitsch and pop that claims to be serious.

No matter how high-browed aesthetes scold kitsch, no matter how much they talk about the decline of morals and the fooling of the masses - without a riot of colors, without false, but generally accessible luxury, without a sense of belonging to something great and masterpiece, without sweet dreams of a cheerful and serene future our life would probably be insipid and boring.

Kitsch style - a bold look for a bright personality

Do you like puns and originality in your image? To be like Pippi Longstocking? Then the Kitsch style will make great friends with you! The combination in one image of a bunch of clothes of different styles at once, completely contradictory in theme and direction, get acquainted - this is kitsch style.

History of Kitsch style

All bright styles appear thanks to non-standard youth, who are tired of the rules and regulations, in fact, this is how the Kitsch style was born in the middle of the 20th century. In the 60s and 70s, Kitsch took pride of place in popular culture. And in the 80s, the female half globally got hooked on this trend in youth fashion. A slight touch of glamour, many will remember leggings in flashy colors and miniskirts, lips and cheeks all in sequins, brightly accentuated eyes, all this was a pronounced sign of kitsch in fashion. Difficult time, with its new laws of a single office corporate clothing, pushed the individuality and here, the Kitsch style expresses freedom in choosing and manifesting oneself. A lot has changed since that time, but the essence of the style has remained unchanged!

What is the style of kitsch in clothes

Things in this style often shock others with sentimentality and bad taste. However, in the wardrobe of every star there are things in the style of Kitsch, occupying a couple of shelves in the closet. Public figures are often models for millions of young people, who quickly pick up the novelties of dumbfounded fashion. Clothes and shoes of this specific style are not repeated, since most often things are sewn for a specific owner. The attitude towards the person who put on the kitsch is ambiguous and his appearance does not leave anyone indifferent. Denim wear and elements of evening dress are combined here, sportswear will become carnival style for a disco, the classics are diluted with rustic attire. A lot of trousers, dresses, overalls, shoes, boots, ankle boots and they are unique. Made of leather, leather substitutes, decorated with metal spikes, gold chains,
with semi-precious stones and iridescent sequins, on high platforms and studs, these clothes and shoes characterize their owner as a person who knows the basics of design. Interesting combinations and combinations of things will cheer up not only the owner of an awkward image, but will also make it clear what kind of person is in front of you, those around you. Vivid examples among the stars are: Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Madonna and others.

kitsch and fashion

Now we live in a time of creative madness, and no one is surprised by the complete lack of elegance, some kind of decency. Clothes are a way of self-expression, not clothes that cover up what nature has given us. Despite all the severity and bias of fashion towards everything extravagant and incongruous, she could not resist such originality and love for the Kitsch style. So in 1996, the house of Dior invited John Galliano to his house, who wiped his nose at glamor and made the maximum kitsch style in clothes. Innovations did not give a decline in the demand for things, on the contrary, the army of Kitsch fans grew after the introduction of the brave and young.

Comfortable and cheap clothes stood in line with high fashion. Now, for example, one of the brightest designers - in each of his collections gives heat, always surprises and pleases us with bright and unpredictable images. The rivalry between men and women has almost ceased. Clothing details - bows, ruffles, flowers on blouses and shirts, fur trims for men's clothing are inherent in all outfits. Kitsch style does not depend on the whims of fashion. It is allowed to wear anything and everything, for example, knitted, suede bracelets or colored elastic bands on the hands. Shiny over-the-knee boots, a leather jacket with stones, spikes with wide stitching, timeless and decorated jeans and you are already among your own! Designers effortlessly and enthusiastically combine the incongruous, experiment with colors and styles, offer bizarre forms of clothing on fashion models, decorate their collections with pompous and inappropriate costume jewelry complete with flashy accessories. So do not get lost, take it and get dressed!
