Which film is better: matte or glossy. Which tile to choose: matte or glossy Matte and glossy screen

Good day to all!

When choosing a monitor, many do not pay attention to the surface of the screen at all (except for its size ☺).

Meanwhile, your quality of work depends on what kind of surface it is. Probably, many have noticed that, for example, on a sunny bright day - on one monitor it shines so that you can’t see anything, and on the other screen - like nothing, you can work ...

And such behavior, just, depends on a surface. In general, now on sale you can find three types of monitors: with a matte surface; with glossy; with anti-glare (a kind of matte, but still, many distinguish it separately).

In this article I will try to analyze the pros / cons of each, and give my vision of when and which one to choose ...

By the way, regarding the choice of a monitor: I recommend that you read another small article about matrices (TN, IPS, PLS) -

Matte vs Glossy: Which Surface Is Better?

I hasten to disappoint (or please, as anyone ☺) neither one nor the other is better or worse. It all depends mainly on the working conditions, and the work itself, depending on what you are doing behind the monitor (from personal preferences ...).

I will immediately start the article with one of the most important features: a matte surface does not mirror so the picture is like glossy (please note the 2 pics below). On the matte surface you will not see your reflection, there will be no glare on it in the sun (or the side light of the lamp).

Therefore, if you plan to work on the street (with daylight), or your desktop is next to a window, then you'd better look at a monitor with a matte finish.

Photo 1. Glossy and matte surfaces (for comparison of two identical monitors). On glossy - there are glare (but it is brighter and conveys colors better)

Photo 2. A reflection is visible on a glossy surface (mirror)

On the other hand, a glossy surface greatly benefits in saturation and color reproduction : the picture looks much more lively on it. Look at photo 3(4): it shows the same picture, but on different screens. The one on the left looks much clearer and brighter: on it you can see the whole play of colors of nature...

Those. if you work with photos and videos (edit photos, like to watch movies in good and high quality, etc.) - then glossy monitor should be a priority!

Photo 3. Glossy screen vs. matte

It is also worth adding that the glossy monitor conveys saturated and deep black color . Compared to faded matte - like heaven and earth ☺.

Photo 4. Top view - there is glare from the lamp on the glossy screen

However, a very bright screen is not always good!

If you work hard with text or formulas (programming something, compiling formulas in Excel, editing documents in Word, etc.), then such a high brightness, coupled with eye strain: it can adversely affect vision (and this is not only my opinion, but also of many experts). Eyes from high brightness begin to quickly overwork and get tired.

More details about correct setting monitor, about fatigue and gymnastics for the eyes, see this article:

Now on sale you can also find anti-glare surface screen. It is somewhere between matte and glossy. It helps to smooth out (reduce glare) from bright light, and at the same time, not reduce color rendering so much. In general, this surface is more like a matte one (let's say, one of its varieties).

Personal opinion

After working with various monitors for more than a year, I generally came to the conclusion that the old LG CRT monitor was the best for me: its color reproduction was no worse than that of many modern ones with an IPS matrix, and various dynamic scenes looked great in it, no distortion of the picture at different viewing angles. Now they don’t produce such ones ... (probably, they have one minus: the diagonal was not too large ☺, well, the dimensions ...)

As for modern ones, I came to the conclusion that if you work with text (code, formulas, draw something), then it’s better to take a matte surface with a TN matrix (both cheap and the best fit) - the screen is not so bright, and the eyes are less strained.

For photo and video - the best option there will be a glossy surface with an IPS (PLS) matrix. The picture will be very juicy and lively. However, if movies, photos and games are great on it, then when working with documents: you start to feel discomfort (eyes get tired faster).

In direct sunlight - I personally can not work with either a matte surface, let alone a glossy one (although matte, of course, wins significantly in this regard). Therefore, I personally am a supporter of a matte surface - it's just more versatile...

That's all, for additions on the topic - merci.

Any user modern technology will be delighted with the purchase of a brand new monitor or laptop. But often already in the store the question arises, which matte or glossy screen laptop is better? To answer it, you should analyze the pros and cons of both options. Moreover, it is better if you yourself understand this issue, and do not follow the lead of sellers who are often interested in selling certain models technology. In order not to leave the store without a purchase at all, prepare in advance and make a decision for yourself which monitor is better to take. Actually, we will study and solve this issue in this article.

Features of glossy screens

  • The main features of glossy screens are considered to be brighter and more saturated shades, high color reproduction and significantly pronounced black color.
  • But in cases where such displays are used, glare and reflections become more noticeable.
  • When choosing which monitor is better - matte or glossy, keep in mind that even when the device is turned off, fingerprints are visible on the screen.
  • If he gets hit Sun rays, the image deteriorates significantly. Because of this, it becomes completely impossible to work on it.

Important! The glossy surface greatly overloads the eyes.

Features of matte monitors:

  • Matte “brothers” are distinguished by a special anti-reflective coating, due to which reflection is prevented.
  • Matte displays are comfortable to work at any time of the day and under any conditions.
  • They do not overload the eyes as much as glossy screens.

Important! The only caveat is that they do not convey colors well, and look dull and faded.

Under what conditions should matte and glossy monitors be used?

If you are wondering which screen surface is better - matte or glossy for home use, then consider the following factors:

  • If the lighting in the room is not very bright, then a glossy display with the most saturated color output is ideal.
  • If you plan to work in a room with bright lighting or even on the street, then it would be preferable matte screen. But remember that it will not protect you one hundred percent from glare. Whatever it was, you will have to hide all the light sources that are close to the screen.
  • In many offices and workplaces, workplace lighting sources such as floor and wall lamps are used. Therefore, in such situations, it would be appropriate to use matte displays. Due to all their properties, they make highlights not so sharp, in other words, blur them.

Important! modern man simply impossible to imagine without a computer. Some are already buying ready-made options, and some - collect it on their own. If you decide to assemble a personal computer with your own hands, the main thing is to take care of quality block nutrition. In another of our articles, we have selected useful information About, .

  • Glossy surfaces when working with graphic pictures, objects are able to artificially increase the contrast, as a result - they turn out to be more saturated, bright. But excessive contrast only visually creates a sense of false beauty. Therefore, if you often encounter such images in your work, then it is better to give preference to a matte monitor.
  • If you intend to just read the news on the Internet or watch movies, play video games, use a graphic editor for personal purposes, then for you ideal option there will be gloss. Reflections are not so noticeable on it, and in films, entertainment, color saturation is very important.
  • Note also that glossy screens consume a minimum of energy on laptops, because with less power the picture looks brighter and more colorful.

Important! Naturally, it is impossible to predict in advance under what conditions a new computer will be used in a month or even a few days, because situations are different. For example, you can buy a device with a glossy screen, and you will be sent to work on the street, then you will need to buy an anti-glare film that will quickly solve this problem. But of course, completely converting the monitor into a glossy one will not work.

Which monitor to choose for working with numbers or text?

If you are buying a computer for working with numbers, texts, then when determining which screen cover is better - matte or glossy, keep in mind that it should be as comfortable as possible for eye perception, and so that you can use it in a variety of conditions:

Important! If you are an avid gamer and are looking for a laptop specifically for gaming, it is very important that it meets all the specifications, such as processor power, memory capacity, screen expansion, etc. Such gadgets are not cheap at all, therefore, in order not to miscalculate, check out another of our articles about.

  • Experts advise in such cases to buy matte monitors, because, unlike their glossy counterparts, they are not so saturated with colors and bright. But if the sun's rays fall on them, they do not glare, and the text is well read.
  • If in the first place you have the maximum need to convey the tint range of the image in a room with secondary lighting, then it is better to consider a glossy model.

Important! If you used to work on a computer with a matte monitor and abruptly switched to a glossy one, then at first it will be difficult for you, and you will feel uncomfortable at work.

Advantages and disadvantages of modern monitors

To decide whether to choose a matte or glossy laptop screen, you should definitely remember their pros and cons.

The advantages of glossy screens include the following:

  • Clearly defined black color.
  • more saturated, bright colors and excellent color reproduction.
  • They are ideal for graphics, video and image processing.

Important! The central processing unit is the main component of the laptop responsible for its operation. However, there are times when the original chip fails for some reason and needs to be replaced with a new one. To make your job easier, we have solid work and made it up to date.

The disadvantages of glossy surfaces are:

  • Negative effect on vision.
  • The appearance of glare when exposed to sunlight on the monitor.
  • Manifestation of fingerprints.

Pros of matte screens:

  • The presence of an anti-reflective coating.
  • Comfortable conditions when working with numbers and texts.
  • Minimum response in games.

Disadvantages of screens with a matte finish:

  • Low level of color rendering.
  • Dull and faded colors.
  • The presence of graininess in inexpensive models.

Important! Thermal paste provides normal heat transfer between the surface of the processor and the laptop heatsink. Based on this, it should be borne in mind that it should be exclusively High Quality. In order not to get into trouble, follow the direct link and you will learn about

When you buy a laptop or monitor, you are faced with a choice: matte or glossy? Which screen cover is best? What turns into a “mirror” in the light of the Sun, or one on which the colors seem faded?

We hope this article will help you decide.

Glossy vs matte

Where did this opposition come from? After all, both glossy and matte monitors use the same LCD panels.

Nevertheless, manufacturers are releasing glossy and matte monitors, and buyers are in the throes of choice.

Consider the advantages and disadvantages of each of the coatings.

Glossy displays are more "bright". They have more saturated, intense and contrasting color reproduction; especially deep black. This is a plus.

However, they shine in the sun. This is a minus. If you often work for fresh air or your workplace located by a window, glare may interfere with you.

Matte displays have an anti-reflective coating that "extinguishes" glare. Therefore, in rooms with bright artificial or natural light, for such monitors it is more comfortable to work.

The disadvantage of matte displays is fading. Colors look a little duller on them.

Pros and cons of glossy and matte monitors clearly shows the photo on the cover. Matte Dell on the left and glossy Apple on the right.

What to choose?

It all depends on your goals.

If you're looking for a desktop monitor and the room isn't overly lit, a glossy finish with more vibrant colors is probably the way to go.

If you're buying a laptop and plan to work outdoors a lot (on the terrace on a sunny day), then look for a matte display. Similarly, when buying a monitor for a desktop computer in very good lighting conditions (a table by the window, powerful lamps). But remember: the AR coating on a matte display will not protect you 100% from glare, but it will be slightly less noticeable than on a glossy screen.

Of course, you cannot create ideal conditions for the entire life of the screen (especially when it comes to a laptop). Today your desk is far from the window, and tomorrow they transferred you to an office flooded with sunlight. Therefore, choosing a glossy or matte display, in any case, you make a compromise.

(The photo shows not only laptops with a matte (left) and glossy (right) finish, but also different models different generations. Please do not make direct comparisons.)

If it were possible to make a monitor, where at the click of a finger matte finish would change to glossy (and vice versa), many would be happy. After all, this would allow "tuning" the monitor to specific conditions. But this is impossible.

Therefore, it is likely that the opposition “glossy vs matte” will continue. After all, how many people, so many opinions.

What do we think about when choosing a laptop or monitor for a home computer? Who said "price"? In this case, we are more concerned with a set of custom properties, and the more often we use some element, the more important it is for us.

So, for example, the speed of writing discs in an optical drive will take place somewhere in the tail, since few people write CD-Rs these days. But the screen is the element that is literally constantly in sight. Therefore, user experience and comfort depend very seriously on its properties.

One of the most FAQ by choice of laptop or monitor: is a glossy or matte screen coating better? Of course, this question cannot be answered unambiguously. If gloss were better in everything, no one would offer matte screens, and vice versa.

Both glossy and matte screens have their advantages. Therefore, your choice ideally depends on where and how you use your laptop or monitor.

Advantages and disadvantages of a glossy screen

Glossy screens are more often installed in laptops today, although you can also find monitors for stationary computers covered with a shiny reflective layer. What are the advantages of such displays?

  • Higher contrast. Text and pictures on glossy displays look more distinct.
  • Bright colours. Glossy finish does not dampen the natural radiation of the monitor so that the colors look brighter and more saturated. It also guarantees deep, true blacks. This is especially impressive when watching a video. Watching movies with abundant night scenes or a shadowy picture on such screens is a real pleasure!
  • Spectacular appearance. On store shelves and in studio photos, devices with shiny displays look very attractive.
  • Protection. What shines like glass is sometimes glass. It will protect the screen better. small scratches than a cheap plastic "protector". But even if it's just a film with improved reflectivity (and most often it is), it's still additional reliability.
  • Less battery consumption (for a laptop). The film provides subjectively more bright picture, which means that the screen can not be highlighted so much.
  • If necessary, you can stick an anti-reflective film on the glossy screen to make it matte. It can not only eliminate glare, but also hide the contents of your screen from the curious on the side. If necessary, the film can be removed, the screen will not suffer from this. But a matte screen can not be made glossy in this way.

Here it is worth mentioning that the advantages have a downside:

  • The glossy screen reflects light very well. It doesn't matter if the sun is bright electric lamp or point lights - they will reflect beautifully on the screen, regardless of whether it is on or off. Even when you turn on your laptop at full brightness in the sun, you run the risk of finding that your screen is more like a mirror: you can be seen better in it than the image.
  • Gloss whimsical to the angle of inclination. You may have to tilt the screen in one direction or another every second to find a comfortable angle and see at least something other than your face on the screen.
  • Gloss is a criminalist's dream. He shows fingerprints without even trying to disguise them. This is especially frustrating if your laptop has a touchscreen and you use it extensively.

Pros and cons of a matte screen

As soon as gloss came into fashion, users began to actively protest. Apparently, they protested not because they seriously thought whether a matte or glossy laptop screen was better: they simply had no choice. Some have even switched from MacBooks to Windows devices. This is not surprising, since Apple is always at the forefront of change, sometimes leaving the user no chance to enjoy the "good old". If you want to remember the intensity of those disputes, read what they are now writing about new iPhones without an audio jack.

However, matte screens have a number of advantages, due to which they have not ceased to be offered:

  • Good job in the world. If your laptop has a matte screen, you can safely go to the beach with it, work on the terrace of a cafe or in a hall flooded with lights. All this brightness will not prevent you from focusing on the picture on the screen.
  • Less sensitive to tilt angle. Glossy laptop or the monitor will have to be rotated a lot to find a comfortable angle for yourself. Matte frees from this unnecessary fuss.
  • conservative style. Matte screens are often found on business laptops where functionality is more important than design. The user is there not so much to watch videos and photos as to work with documents and the Internet.
  • Resists pollution well. You still have to wipe it from time to time, however, it takes a lot of effort to slap such a screen to an unbearable look.

The disadvantages of matte displays directly follow from their advantages:

  • Less bright colours. More precisely, less catchy. The absence of a reflective film strangely turns out to be more visible than its presence. When watching videos and photos, the picture is not so juicy because of this, and the black color is not “radical black” at all.
  • Grain. With the same low pixel density on a glossy screen, it will be less conspicuous than on a matte one.
  • Irreversibility. You will not make a matte screen glossy by sticking a film on it (but the opposite is possible).

findings

Choosing a matte or glossy laptop screen should be based on where, how and how much you use your computer or laptop. Glossy screens are generally better suited for multimedia and entertainment purposes, while matte screens are better suited for document work, the web, design, or video editing, as they provide more "honest" colors.

And remember that a glossy screen can be made matte with a special film, and then removed. Therefore, the difference between these two types of screens is quite subtle and easily overcome.
