Norway maple spherical shape. "holly maples". Care and landing

Of course, maple cannot be taken solely as decorative tree. North America cannot imagine a dessert without maple syrup, and in some countries its leaves are used to make dolma. However, few plants enhance a garden quite like the globular Norway maple.

MATERIALS

  • maple graft
  • maple rootstock
  • dressing tape

INSTRUMENTS

  • secateurs
  • sharp garden knife

Step 1

In early spring, cut cuttings from the maple scion. Before grafting, the cuttings should be stored at a temperature of about 0ºС. Tie them in bundles, wrap them in wet sphagnum and put them in open bags with air access and moisture evaporation. Place them in the basement, under the snow, or in the refrigerator. The cuttings should not dry out; make sure they don't get moldy or sprout. Globular maple is grafted onto boles different heights. It can also be grafted into the root neck - then it looks like a ball lying on the ground. It is most effective to use stems from 2 to 4 m.

Step 2

Make a cut on the maple rootstock where the bud is.

Step 3

Make a cut of the kidney with a shield on the scion. Pay attention to the position of the hands.

Step 4

Carry the cut kidney on a knife. If she fell to the ground or touched the skin, you will have to make another one. Insert a shield with a scion bud into the place of the cut on the rootstock. If the shield is somewhat narrower than the cut area, it is not placed in the middle, but shifted to one of the edges.

Step 5

Tie the graft with a fixing tape. The first turn is fixing.

Step 6

Make the next winding in a spiral, leaving the kidney area uncovered. Secure the ribbon at the top with a knot.

The most common problem with ornamental trees is that they are too big size crowns of an adult plant. But there are many varieties of trees that grow without pruning and special shaping into a neat ball.

Decorative maple shapes

Wonderful varieties are undeservedly uncommon among us. field maple, Acer campestre 'Rozi' and 'Nanum'. Its leaves are 3-5-lobed, soft outlines, smaller than those of Norway maple, yellow-red in dissolution, dark green in summer, very beautiful bright yellow in autumn.

In varietal maples, the crown is almost spherical or broadly ovoid, as in Acer campestre ‘Elsrijk’, dense, without special pruning. The height and width of an adult tree is 3.5-5 m, depending on the height of the graft (usually about 2 m in western nurseries). The tree is very frost-resistant, unpretentious and drought-resistant. It can tolerate partial shading, although light-requiring. Responsive to watering and fertilizing. Used in alley, group and single landing on the lawn, for topiary cutting. From non-standard (bushy) forms, excellent hedges are obtained. Field maple forms a good backdrop for flowering trees and shrubs.

For larger plots and landing along the alleys, it is also perfect globular grade Norway maple Acer platanoides ‘Globosum’. The characteristic five-lobed leaves are bronze when blooming in spring, then dark green, and turn yellow-orange in autumn.

This hardy tree grows on any fertile soil, does not tolerate flooding and salinity, is wind-resistant and durable. May need sanitary and thinning pruning in early spring.

White Blooming Balls

Plant an excellent variety in the area bird cherry Prunus padus ‘Nana’. The height of this small tree with a dense spherical crown is from 3 to 4 m. The branches are matte brown in color, emit the aroma of bitter almonds. The leaves are rather small, oval, dark green in summer, orange-red to crimson in autumn. In May, the entire tree is covered with fragrant, white flowers in drooping racemes. Later, clusters of edible, black-red fruits are formed. Very undemanding to soil plant, tolerates temporary dryness, very frost-resistant.

In terms of drought resistance and undemanding nature, a rare tree can be compared with false acacia locust, or, as it is called, white locust. Previously, the variety was often used in landscaping. Robinia Robinia ‘Umbraculifera’- small tree with correct spherical crown, rather slow growing. Over the years, the branches become beautifully curved, which is especially visible in the leafless state.

Decorators love this tree for its exotic crown appearance. It looks very nice on the lawn as an architectural living element, as well as in the alley planting along the roads. It practically does not need pruning, with the exception of removing damaged or thickening branches.

For small gardens choose a tree with a regular, spherical, very dense crown - shrub cherry Prunus eminens ‘Umbraculifera’. The height of the tree depends on the height of the graft. In spring, it is covered with many white flowers, the foliage is small, glossy. Like all cherries, it is photophilous, prefers fertile, moderately moist soils.

To prevent pest damage, early spring treatment with systemic fungicides and insecticides is recommended. The stem and the grafting site must be protected from spring burns and cracking of the bark with a cane or nonwovens. Pruning - sanitary and light thinning in early spring. Can be great decoration flower beds or lawn, also grown in large containers on the terrace or near the porch.

For central and southern regions Ukraine is a great variety catalpa bignonioides Catalpa bignonioides ‘Nana’. Large bright green leaves give the tree a southern flavor. This variety almost does not form flowers, and therefore fruits. In youth, the crown is ideally spherical, in an adult tree it looks like a wide umbrella.

Relic exotic

For collectors, a variety can be recommended. relic tree Ginkgo biloba Ginkgo biloba ‘Globus’. original plant natural look, often called a living fossil, originally from China, is very beautiful, but too large for a personal plot.

Varietal ginkgo, retaining all the attractive features and original fan-shaped foliage, has a compact, beautiful crown. For all its uniqueness, this is a fairly stable and durable tree that places low demands on the place of growth.

The plant prefers sunny areas protected from cold and dry winds and moderate watering. Practically does not get sick and is not damaged by pests.

  • Globular maples - trees immune to pollution, intended for decoration of gardens, parks, squares and alleys.
  • Their crown is a hemisphere up to 5 meters wide.
  • These trees grow slowly, forming a crown at the level at which they were grafted. Does not require pruning.
  • On its own, the tree forms a beautiful dense, closed spherical crown.

Tree Features:

  • Maple spherical is very demanding on the quality of the soil. This plant does not like stony soils, sand and salt marshes.
  • It does not tolerate stagnant moisture and depleted soil.
  • Easily endures winter and low temperatures. Withstands cold temperatures reaching -40 degrees, early and prolonged frosts.
  • Loves the light, but adapts easily to partial shade.

The main growth of the tree occurs in the first years.

After 10 years of life, the globular maple strengthens its root system. This type of tree has very powerful and deep roots. The wood of this maple is strong and wind resistant. It can reach up to 1 meter in diameter. The color of the bark is almost black, with small cracks.

Like all trees of this family, leaves are their distinguishing feature. The leaves of any Norway maple are five-lobed, on one petiole. At the base, the leaves are heart-shaped, and the notches between the lobes are rounded. The top of the leaves is thinly pointed. The upper side of the leaves is glossy.

Norway maple spherical has the ability to bloom. Its flowers are small, greenish-yellow erect corymbs on short peduncles. Flowers are 8 to 13 mm in diameter. The flowering period is from April to July, depending on the climatic conditions of growth.

After flowering, in the place of inflorescences, fruits appear in the form of a lionfish with an obtuse angle.

Summer leaf color is green or dark green. By autumn, maple leaves of this species become intensely yellow and orange. Wintering buds are red.

These trees are valued for their wide, beautiful crown, ease of care, and ease of cultivation.
