How to fix a toilet bowl yourself

The principle of operation and components of the drain tank

Plumbing equipment quite often fails due to increased operational loads.

It is believed that the operation of the tank is arranged according to the principle of a water seal.

Repair drain tank toilet bowl - perhaps the most common type of activity, often carried out in emergency mode.

Repair of a drain tank is a general concept. Most often, the problem is solved by replacing the flap valve, lever, or even by simply tightening the nuts. The cause of the leak may be an ordinary rubber gasket, or rather, its wear.

Technically, a toilet tank is a water seal, the device of which is based on filling a certain amount of water for use when the shutter is opened.

The drain mechanism consists of the following fittings:

  • levers representing the system;
  • float;
  • valve blocking the drain hole (seal);
  • shut-off valve that prevents water from entering the tank.

Those who have already repaired the tank with their own hands can confirm that the drain mechanism is quite simple.

There are often cases when repair of the toilet cistern is not needed - only adjustment of the fittings that provide drainage should be done. It is very easy to do it yourself.

First of all, turn off the water in the entire riser. After that, carefully remove the lid from the drain tank and study the device to determine the type of failure or breakdown.

Often the need for such actions is due to the fact that too little or, conversely, too much water enters the drain tank. Fixing the problem is very simple, you need to adjust the float lever with the wire holding the float. To do this, it is enough to slightly bend it, lowering or raising the float. Moreover, you can make a new lever using thick wire.

Another common problem is when water continuously flows into the cistern but does not fill it. The situation is caused by the position of the toilet float, which is most likely at the bottom or skewed. The repair consists in the fact that the float must be corrected by hand.

Troubleshooting simple toilet problems

Primary diagnostics of all fittings of the drain mechanism will help determine the possibility of do-it-yourself repair.

If the water flows continuously, you should try to push the drive rod down. The cessation of the leak indicates the looseness of the drain mechanism. To eliminate this malfunction, it is enough to carefully stretch all the connections.

A fairly common phenomenon - water flows from the junction of the tank with the toilet. In this case, it is necessary to replace the rubber gasket. The new gasket must be the same size as the old one. It is placed on top of the nut that secures the siphon.

Wouldn't hurt to check the status drain valve installed between the tank and the hose. To do this, disassemble the connecting mechanism, and then clean it with a special brush and assemble it.

How to get to the flush mechanism in the toilet bowl?

Scheme of the flush mechanism for the toilet bowl.

First of all, you need to establish from which place the toilet is leaking. Sometimes water flows through the cracks that have appeared in the toilet itself, but most often this is due to the operation of the cistern drain mechanism.

In this case, the repair will not do without pliers, new rubber gaskets and, if necessary, parts that provide a drain mechanism. If you follow the instructions, it will not be difficult to repair the leak with your own hands.

Getting started, block the access of water to the tank. Then they examine a plumbing fixture - a toilet bowl with a flush tank.

In modern equipment, a drain mechanism of two types is used - push-button and lever.

In the first case, to drain, you need to press the button, in the second - pull the lever.

You should find the locking ring that holds the button and unscrew upper part buttons and ring.

With a lever drive, a handle is unscrewed at its end. This will allow the tank cap to be removed. This must be done very carefully, since the lids are sold only complete with toilet bowls.

Valve failure diagnosis and replacement

If you have to apply force when pressing the handle with a full tank of water to flush the water in the toilet, the flap valve, which is inside the siphon, has broken. Replacing a part is quite simple for those who know how to do something with their own hands.

Scheme of the construction of the drain tank.

The first thing to do is close the tap that supplies water. Then they perform the work in the following sequence:

  1. Water is drained from the drain tank.
  2. Disconnect the drain pipe.
  3. Loosen the locknut.
  4. Disconnect the pipes: overflow and supply.
  5. Loosen the screws holding the cistern to the toilet.
  6. Disconnect the hook from the top rod of the siphon.
  7. Remove the siphon block.
  8. The rod and the lifting plate are shifted along the guides.
  9. A damaged gasket on the valve is replaced with a new one.

After that, the siphon is assembled and installed, while observing the reverse order. Do-it-yourself valve repair is completed.

If desired, you can upgrade the device of the drain mechanism. Instead of the old siphon block, it is recommended to install a new device, consisting of three parts. This will make it easier to replace the valve in the future without turning off the water or removing the tank. You only have to unscrew the connecting nuts to remove the siphon block. After that, on the bottom side of the block, the flap valve is replaced with a new one.

Today it is unrealistic to imagine life without water supply and plumbing. Plumbing fixtures are used in everyday life very often. One such device is the toilet. Due to frequent use, it can fail, the drain button is especially vulnerable. Therefore, this article will discuss how you can fix the problems associated with it.

Toilet device with a button

The toilet cistern is a reservoir for storing water for flushing. In order for it to work, it has some reinforcement elements.

The flush tank mechanism with a button consists of the following two elements:

  • Drain mechanism.
  • Fill valve.

Drain mechanism directly connected to the button, and is responsible for draining the water. The drain mechanism has a hermetic membrane, which is located at the bottom of the device. It prevents the appearance of a gap through which water can drain into the toilet.

The device of the toilet cistern mechanism with a button

The drain mechanism can be equipped with:

  • Single button. When pressed, the water descends all that is in the tank.
  • Dual mode button. The button has several modes of operation, and is divided into two parts: large and small. When you press a large part of the button, the water will drain completely from the tank. When draining the water with a small part of the button, the water drains partially, up to half of the available liquid in the drain tank.

Dual mode toilet button

Responsible for a set of fluid in the tank behindshower valve . This mechanism has a float, thanks to which the water level in the drain tank is adjusted.

Toilet fill valve

There are two options for supplying water to the tank:

  • bottom supply;
  • lateral supply.

When installing a valve with a bottom water supply, all connections must be made airtight. Tanks with a side intake of water are more common than those with a bottom one. A feature of this type is the appearance of noise when collecting water.

All parts of the fittings that are inside the cistern are fully interconnected. When the button is pressed, water starts to drain from the tank. Accordingly, the float of the filling valve descends to the bottom of the tank, thus opening the inlet valve. Water begins to flow into the tank, and with the water level the float rises until it is completely filled until the inlet valve is closed.

Types of breakdowns and their elimination

There are several common malfunctions that manifest themselves as follows:

  • water continuously flows from the cistern into the toilet;
  • constant flow of water from the water supply into the container;
  • to drain the water, you must repeatedly press the button;
  • the button on the drain tank does not work completely;
  • the toilet is leaking;
  • the collection of water in the drain tank is too noisy.

In any of the above cases, you can carry out repairs with your own hands, because the process of such work is not something very complicated. The most important thing is to determine the cause of a particular problem and eliminate it.

Drain tank leak

A cistern leak can occur for four reasons. The first and most common is due to the overflow of the tank, when all the excess liquid begins to leave through the overflow. This can happen for several reasons:

1. The gasket located at the outlet of the drain valve is not pressed. It is necessary that the gasket is securely pressed against the toilet part. After all, leakage can be not only due to loss of elasticity or deformation.

2. During use, the rubber gasket may deform and lose elasticity, so a gap appears through which water begins to flow.

3. A crack in the drain valve may appear inside the drain tank, through which water flows.

drain valve

4. There is a pin in the valve body that holds the float. Due to frequent use, it can rust, which also leads to water leakage.

Toilet float pin

The second reason is bolts that connect the toilet to the cistern . Bolts are either plastic or steel. In the case of the first, due to operation, it bursts and the liquid gradually flows. If we talk about steel, then the problem is that over time it rusts, and the effect is the same.

Connecting bolts

The third reason is defective rubber bulb . Any rubber part becomes less elastic over time than when it was new, a rubber bulb is no exception. It becomes rigid and does not acquire the desired shape, as a result of which water flows.

Pear drain valve

The fourth reason for the breakdown is the skew of the tank, or the shift of the float lever in the tank.

There are two main reasons for this device to skew: poor-quality plumbing parts, or the presence of a hole in the float where water flows. Another reason lies in frequent use plumbing detail.

Toilet cistern repair

If the water flows before reaching the overflow, then bolt problem . To solve this problem, you need to do the following:

1. Check if water only flows up to the overflow level.

2. Shut off the water supply and drain the drain tank.

3. Remove the hose that supplies water to the tank from the water supply system.

Dismantling the water supply hose of the toilet bowl

4. Next, you need to unscrew the bolts holding the shelf on the toilet, and pay attention to the fittings, inspect it in order to understand what condition it is in. If in working, then you should simply replace a couple of bolts, or purchase new set fittings.

The process of unscrewing the toilet bolts

old rusty bolts, if they prevent the removal of the tank, it is necessary to cut it off with a hacksaw or other cutting tool.

6. After that, you should assemble the tank using new, preferably brass bolts and repeat the above steps in the opposite direction.

It will not be superfluous to replace all rubber gaskets.

How to determine the malfunction of the drain tank

It does not take much effort or knowledge to solve the problem, the most difficult thing is to determine the cause of the water leak from the cistern into the toilet. To find the problem, you should conduct the following experiment:

1. Remove the lid from the toilet.

2. Raise the float one centimeter. If the fluid stops flowing, then the cause is found. Water flows because the lever is slightly bent and does not shut off the water at the moment of reaching the edge of the filling.

4. However, if it is found that the stud is broken, it can be temporarily replaced with a thick piece of copper cable, and if the problem is in the deformation of the hole intended for the stud, then you just need to replace the valve itself.

5. If the problem is still not solved, then the last cause may be a loose gasket (diaphragm) to the valve opening. In this case, it should be adjusted, but if it is still leaking, then you need to purchase a new gasket and replace it.

Gasket (membrane) of the valve hole

If the problem is in the pear, then it makes no sense to repair it, it's easier to just replace it with a new one. However, when buying, you should choose the softest of all offered, because during operation they all become more rigid. The pear is fixed to the thread, so to remove it, unscrew the pear from right to left, respectively, to twist the new one, you need to turn in the opposite direction.

To temporarily solve the problem, you can use some kind of weight, it should be hung on the rod. Thanks to the additional load, the rubber bulb will be pressed against the saddle.

Siphon membrane repair

If the water drains from the tank only after repeated pressing or the liquid constantly leaks, the membrane should be replaced.

Side flush cistern device:
1 - overflow pipe; 2 - water supply; 3 - float valve; 4 - float; 5- float lever, 6- siphon; 7 - membrane; 8 - metal plate with holes; 9 - thrust; 10 - water release lever; 11 - gasket; 12 - siphon retaining nut; 13 - fixing nut; 14 - drain pipe.

Such work is carried out as follows:

1. Instead of a tank lid, put a crossbar; for this, you can use a small rail or tube.

2. Float lever (5) tie to the crossbar.

3. Completely drain the water from the drain tank.

4. The nut that connects the drain pipe to the tank (13) should be removed.

5. Siphon nut (12) just loosen it up a bit.

6. The siphon itself (6) must be disconnected and removed.

7. Remove the damaged membrane (7) and put in a new one, which should be exactly the same size and shape as the old one.

8. Install the cistern fittings in reverse order.

Defective waste tank button

If the drain button does not work, then in most cases it is necessary to repair the damaged traction (9), which connects the toilet button to the flush mechanism.

wire traction

Tubular push button

It is necessary to disconnect the mechanism and the broken element, remove and install a new one. However, for temporary use, you can do traction with my own hands with a thick piece of wire. But for normal and long-term operation, you should purchase a new, serviceable mechanism.

Toilet cistern noise when filling with water

Sometimes the problem is the loud noise that appears when filling the drain tank. There are several ways to solve it.

You can try reducing the water pressure. To do this, simply tighten the water supply valve.

If this does not help, then you will have to disassemble the drain barrel and check all the gaskets. Perhaps one of them is leaky or very worn out, and it is its rubber that is the source of the noise. Then you should replace it.

Worn float valve gasket

If everything is in order here, then you should check all the hoses and pipes of the toilet bowl. Perhaps they are clogged with dirt or other deposits.

In extreme cases, you can make a silencer that will absorb excess sound. For this you need:

1. have or purchase a flexible plastic tube;

2. mount it vertically with respect to the liquid level at the inlet to the float valve;

3. Place the lower end of the plastic tube under water.

For more information about this muffler, see the video:

If such a home-made muffler did not solve the problem, you need to buy and install a stabilizing valve that will independently regulate the pressure of water entering the drain tank.

In rare cases, it is necessary to replace the entire drain system.

Bowl failure for toilet installation

Cup breakage is extremely rare. This is possible only if the toilet to the floor or to the wall was initially fixed incorrectly. Therefore, it is necessary to correctly install the device and carry out repairs in a timely manner, thanks to this, serious and costly breakdowns can be avoided. If a puddle appears on the floor around the toilet bowl, then most likely the breakdown will be in the tank itself. Here are some possible reasons:

  • seat damaged due to corrosion;
  • the pear does not stick tightly enough;
  • the float valve is incorrectly adjusted;
  • insufficient tightness of the nut connection.

When any gasket wears out, it should be replaced immediately with a new one.

Installation gasket replacement

In order to tighten the loose nut at the base of the overflow in the tank, it is necessary to remove it and tighten the nut. However, sometimes you can use a fixing collar. You can also replace a worn cuff.

Faulty intake valve

A bad inlet valve can also cause water to leak. To check, it is necessary to press the button to drain the water, and if at this moment the valve does not close tightly or moves, then it should be repaired. A similar problem may occur due to clogging or due to worn rubber gasket. To solve it you need:

1. close and drain the water in the tank;

2. remove the valve and check its gasket;

The inlet valve is removed by turning its entire body clockwise

3. if it is worn out, then replace it with the same one;

4. if it's not the gasket, then disassemble the valve and carefully remove all dirt from it and its parts (for example, with an old toothbrush).

5. collect everything in reverse order.

You can also watch a video on repairing the intake valve:

However, it doesn't always help. easy cleaning from debris or even the replacement of some part. In such cases, a new filling mechanism should be installed.

Toilet float repair

There are many reasons why water constantly flows. Perhaps the float lever has shifted or warped. To bring him in working condition need to put it in correct position. Basically, it is located 2.5 cm below the pipe through which water is supplied. If necessary, it must be adjusted, as in the image below.

Toilet float adjustment

Also, to solve the problem of water leakage, you can pay attention to the float placed inside the tank. If, upon inspection, it is found that there is water inside, or damage is visible, this means that it has become too heavy and, accordingly, water is leaking. You can repair the float as follows:

1. Remove the float;

2. Completely pour water out of it;

3. Securely seal the resulting hole;

4. Put the float in its original place.

To close the hole on the float, you can use heated plastic or ordinary plastic bag, which must be securely fixed to the float. However, such sealing of holes will only allow temporary use of the float, because over time this problem will make itself felt. Therefore, in the near future it is advised to purchase a new float and put it in place of the old one.

Float drain tank

Based on the foregoing, the most important thing is to find the cause of the breakdown, then either repair it or replace it with a new part. When installing a new mechanism, it is important to properly adjust it. With a strong desire, all these works can be carried out without a specialist.

Every home needs a toilet. It is operated much more often than all other plumbing fixtures, so it breaks down most often. Its most vulnerable component is the tank. Due to mechanical damage to its internal components, the device becomes inoperable, and the owners will have to repair the old-style toilet cistern. Old-fashioned flush tanks have been out of production for a long time, but they can be found in apartments throughout the country, which confirms their reliable performance and durability.

Device

Do-it-yourself repair of an old-style toilet bowl with your own hands begins with a study of its structure and features. The main difference lies in the fittings, in which the water supply is lateral, and the design, in which the simplest physical laws are involved.

The main nodes are presented:

  • A filling device, which includes a movable lever with a float and a valve to shut off the water;
  • Drain mechanism.

In the design of the most “ancient” drain devices a cast-iron bell is included - a cork with a soft rubber gasket. After pressing the outer lever, the bell is raised, and the water moves down through the opened hole.

Important! This design is distinguished by great reliability, because the products serve for half a century, while repair work only periodic replacement of worn gaskets is required.

Later designs are equipped with a pear made of rubber or plastic instead of a bell. When the container is released, the float lowers, after which the valve opens, which starts the water.

Consider the difference between the old-style drain systems:

  • Unattractive appearance. Previously, external attractiveness was not so important, more attention was paid to the reliability of the nodes and their performance. Therefore, the look of old products is not very aesthetic, with a primitive shape and a roughly processed surface.
  • Tank location. Most often, the location of the tank is under the ceiling, and a pipe is intended for the passage of water - a riser. Due to this, the water stream develops high speed, which leads to a high-quality flush, but at the same time a lot of noise is heard.
  • Design features of valves. Such products are distinguished by a very peculiar flushing system. It is based on the principle of a rocker, for work it is necessary to pull a rope or chain. The design is very simple, no instructions are required for assembly.
  • Large water consumption. Such designs do not use economical drain modes, the water leaves in full.
  • intake system. Water is supplied only from the side, which does not allow you to hide the hoses.

Important! In some cases, it is more expedient to replace the tank with more modern product, for example, if the damage is too extensive.

Common breakdowns and repair options

Any, even the most primitive mechanism, can eventually break down. How to fix an old toilet cistern? Even a non-professional can deal with most breakdowns, there is nothing complicated about it.

Water flows continuously

In this case, we initially check if there is a leak in the filling valve. For this:

  1. We remove the cover.
  2. Raise the float lever.
  3. If the flow of water continues, turn off the tap in front of the tank and drain the water.
  4. Via wrench unscrew the part in which the valve and the water supply are connected.
  5. We remove the float lever, fixing nuts, pull out the valve and replace it with a new one.

If water stops flowing after lifting the lever, the problem may be due to:

  • Distortion of the float lever, as a result of which it clings to the sleeve. As a result, the float fails to fully rise and the valve closes. In this case, you need to pull out and straighten the rod.
  • Float leaks. In this case, it remains partially or completely immersed in water, while the valve fails to close.
  • The problem is solved by installing a new part. In case of absence required part heated plastic or sealant is used to repair the damage.

Water keeps flowing out

Toilet flush cisterns can be repaired even if the water drains completely. Such a sign indicates a violation of the tightness of the drain mechanism, in which water seeps between the bell and the body. This malfunction may be caused by:

  • Corrosion or contamination of the seat surface. Due to deposits drain mechanism cannot close tightly. To fix the problem, clean the surface with sandpaper.
  • The appearance of a gap between the seat and the body. For repair, tighten the fixing nuts with a socket wrench.
  • Falling out of the guide sleeve from the saddle. Due to such a breakdown, the constipation is skewed when lowering. In this case, we insert the sleeve into the hole of the arc and wrap it with an elastic band.
  • Incorrect position of the release lever. The pear does not completely cover the saddle and the water flows constantly. To get rid of the problem, we bend the lever and lower it below the inlet of the underwater pipe by 2.5 mm. In addition, be sure to check the fasteners that hold the rocker, tighten the loose screws.

Important! You will need a short tool to tighten the screws. During work, it is imperative to ensure that the vertical plate with four corners does not move out of the recess in the housing.

Supply hose problems

If the inlet hose or seals at the joint are damaged, drops will appear at the points where the hose connects to the housing. We carry out repairs in the following sequence:

  1. Tighten the connecting nut.
  2. We shut off the water.
  3. Disconnect the hose.
  4. We replace the gasket.
  5. We put a winding on the thread.
  6. Attach the hose to the tank.
  7. We tighten the nut.

Loud noise

Even if the flush mechanism for the toilet has not broken, repairs are made. Even if the device seems to be working, but it makes a lot of noise.

To solve the problem, you can install a special stabilizing device instead of the part. If water enters the tank with a slight pressure, the problem is solved much easier. The filling valve mechanism includes a tube through which water descends. We vertically install a silencer on it, the lower end of which is lowered into the water at the bottom. For the manufacture of a silencer, we use a flexible hose made of rubber or plastic. After such an update, the noise from falling water and the sound of a galloping float will disappear.

The toilet in every home is an element of everyday life, without which it is simply impossible to do. It is operated much more often than all other plumbing fixtures. That is why it fails more often than other devices. And its most vulnerable component is the tank, which consists of several internal components. Their mechanical damage, as well as careless handling of the tank are the reasons for the loss of this device of its performance. In the article, we will look at how to repair a toilet cistern with a button on our own, without calling a plumber team.

All drain tanks have a similar design. The difference is only in the mechanism of starting water.

Structurally, a toilet cistern with a button or two buttons, as well as a flush lever, can be represented as a set of interacting nodes:

  • filling valve. He is responsible for maintaining the water level at a certain level. The valve is controlled by a hollow float. When the water rises to the desired level, the float closes the water supply channel to the tank;
  • Plastic float attached to the filling valve. Works on the principle of a rocker, rising when filling the tank;
  • drain valve having an overflow system. Modern options tanks suggest controlling this valve by pressing a button. With manual control of the old-style drain, it is enough to pull the lever or chain to start water into the toilet;
  • overflow is a mandatory component of the tank. It is adjustable in height, thanks to which the maximum water level is set. When this level is exceeded, water flows through the overflow pipe into the sewer without spilling out through its walls.
The main structural elements and the principle of operation of the mechanism are the same for all types of drain tanks, only their execution differs

A tank with a mechanical drain is very simple to operate. Water enters it through the filling valve when the float is in the lowered position. After reaching a strictly defined level, the float shuts off the water supply. Drainage is controlled manually. If the tank is equipped with buttons, then the water is drained after pressing them. In this case, the drain valve partially or completely opens, passing water into the toilet. The float drops, slightly opening the filling valve.

The structure of the toilet flush tank with two buttons is a little more complicated, but you can use such a tank more economically. If you press one of the buttons, the water is partially drained. Full drain occurs when the second button is pressed.

Increasingly, you can find new types of tanks that have bottom water connection. It is advisable to install them if the use of lateral connection is not possible due to lack of space. The main difference between this tank is the presence of a membrane valve. Under the action of water pressure in the pipeline, the valve opens slightly and allows water to enter. When the water rises, the float presses on the piston rod, which gradually closes the diaphragm valve. When the set level is reached, the valve closes completely.

Fittings with bottom water inlet and button control

Common faults

Drain malfunctions may well lead to the loss of the toilet bowl of its performance. For many, such a sudden breakdown can be a real natural disaster. In addition, no one will like the increased water consumption either.

About what it is and what types it happens, read in a separate material.

And how to choose and in what situations it is necessary, we told in another article on the site.

What kind of breakdowns are typical for drain tanks? We list them in order of frequency of occurrence:

1. Leakage of water from the toilet to the floor. Most often, water flows through sealing ring located between the bottom of the tank and the toilet shelf. If the ring is cracked or warped, water will seep through it. Also, the place of leakage may be the gaskets of the mounting bolts with which the tank is attached to the shelf. They will have to be replaced if tightening the bolts does not work. And it doesn’t matter if the old-style toilet cistern is being repaired, or is being repaired modern system. After all, they all have the same mounts.

Tip: When replacing gaskets and seals, it is recommended to lubricate them with liquid silicone to prolong their life and prevent cracking.

2. The toilet is seen D.C. water. Most often this is due to the overflow of the tank, in which water flows out through the overflow tube. This can happen due to a change in the height of the overflow, a loose fit of the float to the shut-off valve, and the loss of its tightness by the float. The rubber seal on the drain fitting. Most often, the malfunction can be eliminated by adjustment. When the locking gasket is worn, it is desirable to replace the entire drain mechanism.

3. Starter malfunctions. If you are using button mechanism water supply, water may not flow to the drain when the button is pressed. You can repair the fittings of the drain tank with your own hands, since, most often, the lever mechanism that connects the button to the drain breaks. This also applies to tanks with a handle or a chain.

4. Noisy tank filling. This happens due to the disconnection of the tube through which water is poured into the tank. This is typical for tanks in which water is supplied from the side. With a flown tube, the noise of incoming water will be clearly audible. To fix the problem, remove the top cover and install the tube on the fitting.

5. Water does not flow into the tank. Repairing a toilet cistern with a button or with other descent mechanisms in the event of such a problem comes down to checking the inlet to the cistern. It is necessary to remove the valve from the tank and clean the inlet with a thin steel wire and rinse it with water.

Tank repair with one button

Many people who are used to old-style cistern do not know how to fix a toilet flush with a button. In fact, the differences between these systems are very minor. For many, the main problem is disassembling such a tank. Indeed, the button located on the tank lid requires careful handling during disassembly. But the device is very easy to disassemble.

The procedure will be as follows:

  • turn off the water;
  • empty the tank;
  • carefully unscrew the plastic nut near the button;
  • remove the cover.

Further actions depend on the nature of the breakdown. Breakdowns of a tank with a button can be as follows:

  1. Little water is drawn into the tank. Check float position and adjust.
  2. The water start button is stuck. This may be due to clogging of the button shaft. It is necessary to clean it, and set the button to its original position.
  3. Water does not go into the toilet when the button is pressed. Most likely, there was a break in the mechanism between the button and the drain valve. You can restore it yourself. If this reinforcement element is broken, then you can use it to replace it. copper wire or replace the valve completely.
  4. Water flows through the overflow neck. Overflow height or float needs to be adjusted. The overflow is very easy to adjust. To do this, unscrew the union nut and install required level overflow.
  5. Water flows into the toilet from under the valve. The drain valve gasket may have worn out. It is best to replace the entire valve. To do this, unscrew the plastic nut at the bottom of the tank and remove the valve from its place. Install a new valve.

Note: It happens that the valve is loosely in place due to skew. Re-opening and closing it helps eliminate the problem of leakage.

Repair of a two-button tank

Economical water consumption adds popularity to such a plumbing fixture. And how to repair a toilet flush tank with two buttons? The principle of disassembling such a tank remains the same as that of the one-button version.

Typical breakdowns of a two-button tank:

Repair of a tank with a bottom water connection

A tank with a bottom water connection uses a membrane-type filling valve. This may cause a problem with filling the tank with low pressure in the water supply system. The water pressure may not be enough to squeeze the valve and fill the tank. If low pressure is constantly maintained in your system, then it is better to replace the diaphragm valve with a rod analogue.

Another common problem is water leakage at the inlet valve reservoir. Its location is such that the valve is constantly under water. With insufficient tightness of the connections, the presence of leaks is almost guaranteed.

Repair of the toilet cistern with a lower water supply is carried out after shutting off the water supply and removing the cistern lid. After that, the problem is fixed using the same algorithms that are described for repairing models with buttons.

We figured out how to repair a flush tank with a button, with two buttons or with mechanical control. They differ slightly, mainly in the design of the control mechanism. The general principle of operation and repair for all considered devices is the same.

The video shows the repair of the toilet cistern with your own hands, or rather, the process of replacing its fittings.

In the process of assembling a toilet cistern with your own hands, it is initially recommended to take into account all the details of its installation.

Failure to comply with the installation technology during operation, as well as improper fastening of the fittings, will contribute to the appearance of such a nuisance as condensate or leakage.

Therefore, the drain tank must not only be correctly installed, but also adjusted.

At the moment, the plumbing market represents a wide range plumbing fixtures and devices, among them toilet cisterns.

The proposed models differ in design and construction, but have practically same principle work.

The device of drain tanks can be a mechanism:

  • from one drain button(old model);
  • with two drain levers;
  • mechanism with several drain modes.

The first option is an old-style tank, while pressing the button, all the water descends, then it gradually fills up.

But the second is a modern system that provides for ease of use and water savings.

The principle of operation is to press a large button, while the tank is completely emptied, when using a small button, only part of the water is drained into the toilet.

The flush mechanism in different models of toilet bowls may also work differently. Water enters the toilet directly from the drain tank, while not changing its direction.

Or when draining, the water flow changes direction.

The second option is considered more efficient, but at the same time, its workflow is too noisy.

Do right choice plumbing device, which, if necessary, could be repaired with your own hands, will allow a preliminary acquaintance with its design.

As mentioned above, the mechanism of operation of the plumbing drain tank provides for the collection of water and its descent. The design device includes a system of levers, stop valve and float.

In the process of using the button, the water drains down, passes through the toilet and flows into the sewer.

The outer part of the drain tank consists of a tank with a lid, which is equipped with a button for draining water.

The internal device is:

  • filling valve (ball valve) - a mechanism for dialing and controlling the water level;
  • plug, located opposite the valve - needed when the system provides a side
  • connecting the drain tank to the toilet;
  • drain fittings (for its replacement, you can always find spare parts separately).

The principle of operation and installation of the drain tank

The principle of operation of the drain device is to start the mechanism with a button, after which the shut-off valve connecting the tank to the toilet opens and the water is released.

As soon as the liquid level has decreased, the float is put into action, it settles as the water leaves, thereby opening the fill valve for its subsequent set.

Therefore, in order for the general drain system, you need to set it up with your own hands and fix the float in a certain position.

The principle of setting consists in such actions: the float is lowered when there is too much water in the tank, and vice versa - it is raised up when it is less.

The installation diagram of the drain tank is as follows:

  • Before assembling a newly purchased toilet, it is recommended that you read the manufacturer's manual and connect all the parts into a single system;
  • Then you can do the installation of the tank. Given the type of model (including the old model), its position relative to the toilet is determined;
  • At the next stage, the drain tank is connected to the plumbing and sewer system. Via rubber seals all joints of the installation are sealed;
  • Next, they adjust the float with their own hands, adjusting the level of filling the water. It should be borne in mind that the models of floats are different, it correct installation described in the instructions;
  • A test run of water will allow you to check the mechanism and identify imperfections, if it leaks in any place, the malfunction is immediately eliminated.

The thematic video material in the section will supplement the above.

Causes of breakdowns of the drain tank

Repair of the toilet cistern may be needed:

  • in case of malfunction of the control device;
  • when the tank is leaking;
  • when the seals are deformed and the container is leaking;
  • the shut-off valve is out of order;
  • Condensation found on the toilet bowl;
  • drain valve needs to be replaced.

Usually, to fix toilet drain problems, use the following set:

  • swedish key;
  • a set of seals;
  • a set of fittings, other necessary spare parts;
  • gloves, sponge and rag.

Any repair work on the drain tank requires the removal of the upper part of the installation - the cover.

They remove it carefully so as not to break it, replacing this element with your own hands is simple, but it will be difficult to find it on sale.

Separately, such spare parts are not sold; if damaged, you will have to buy a new tank.

Cover fastening different manufacturers carried out in different ways, so before removing it, it is recommended to look at the instructions and, of course, turn off the water.

Usually flows from the tank to the very wrong moment. It is necessary to repair unexpectedly discovered minor defects immediately. Otherwise, a flood and a quarrel with neighbors living below cannot be avoided.

In addition to the topic, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the thematic video material.

Repair drain when the float is skewed

If water is spontaneously drawn into the container, then even tools are not needed to solve this minor breakdown. Everything is fixed by removing the lid and moving the float at the bottom of the tank with your hands.

If the expected result is not obtained, then you need to align the valve, as it could also be skewed.

If water collects and flows through the top, while the inlet valve does not work, then it may be faulty.

You can verify this by lifting the valve all the way up; when the flow of water stops, it is considered that the mechanism is working.

If nothing has changed, then you need to replace the spare part, which you can also do yourself

Change of seals and shut-off valve

Worn parts of the device can be determined visually, if the valve is slightly pressed and water starts to flow, it is recommended to replace the deformed parts.

The reason why the drain tank is leaking may be due to a broken float. In this case, you will have to replace the spare part, since in the old element, most likely, a hole has formed that allows water to pass through.

If there are no spare parts, then the float is repaired using improvised means. The hole in the float is filled with hot plastic, or it is completely wrapped in polyethylene.

Then the device is sent to the place. I must say that such a repair of the toilet cistern is temporary, and the faulty part will need to be replaced.

In the toilet cisterns of the new sample, there is a membrane valve that protects the container from dirty sediments. Since the membrane wears out quickly, it must be changed frequently.

The membrane is easily made by hand using rubber 1.5-2 mm thick.

The reason for the breakdown of the fittings for draining water can be a failed draft. In this case, the spare part is replaced with a new part.

Again, in its absence, you can temporarily repair the traction with a wire. Such a device does not last long, since the wire tends to bend.

Now about what to do if the water flows too noisily into the toilet, and especially such noise annoys people at night.

You can troubleshoot using one of the following methods:

  • Equipping the valve with a flexible plastic hose. Fastening is carried out vertically, relative to the water mark in the tank, lowering the lower edge into the water. The principle of operation is to collect water through a hose and exit below the level;
  • The use of float stabilizing fittings. The design is a hollow mechanism with a special chamber.

We offer you to watch a video on troubleshooting a toilet flush tank.

Condensation on the toilet cistern

How to fix a toilet flush tank if condensation has formed on it, and water constantly collects under the container.

In this case, not only the mechanism of the tank and the performance of the fittings are subject to verification. But also the ventilation system, since poor air outflow from the room causes its high humidity.

As a result, condensate forms on the tank and pipes.

As a rule, if this problem is not solved in time, the pipes will corrode. The puddle accumulated under the drain tank will gradually begin to seep to the neighbors.

To eliminate the condensate, you will have to tinker, but you will be able to protect yourself from angry neighbors.

Changing the cistern valve is one of the effective options problem solving. This will help eliminate condensation.

If the tank is in good condition, then the installation of new fittings and equipping with a double drain tank button will allow reducing the condensate on its walls.

A fitting kit can be purchased separately, but please note that the selected parts may not fit your toilet cistern model.

Since there are many types of fittings, we will consider how it is replaced in order to remove condensate in the proposed video.
