Can a drill drill through a concrete wall? Is it possible to drill a hole in a concrete load-bearing or brick wall of a panel house with a conventional drill, hammer drill or screwdriver without dust, how to do it

Concrete is extremely durable and strong material, difficult to process. Drilling concrete is a labor-intensive process that requires special equipment, skills and abilities. In this article, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the main rules and requirements for drilling.

Instruments:

  1. Drill.
  2. Perforator.
  3. Chisel.
  4. A hammer.
  5. Drills (for metal and victorious).
  6. Serrated or diamond crowns.
  7. Drilling installation (for diamond drilling).

At the moment, most buildings are built on the basis of durable concrete slabs. And you will most likely have to face the need to drill concrete walls sooner or later. And given that often in the design there are also stones and steel reinforcement, the task becomes really difficult. Even if you have a victorious drill and a powerful drill. In order to make the work easier and clearer, you need to initially select the right tools and study step by step instructions for drilling holes in concrete.

Increased strength and reliability concrete structures implies the need to use specific tools and devices for work. The method of drilling must be determined even before the start of work, based on desired diameter holes and the presence of reinforcement in the concrete slab. Without a preliminary analysis of the material, it is impossible to drill a hole in concrete accurately and accurately.

Modern cutting nozzles used in the drilling process allow you to make holes of almost any depth and diameter. They differ in their length and shape. Such nozzles allow you to break through a solid concrete slab without much physical effort. But for drilling holes with a small diameter, it is quite possible to use a drill or a drill. The cutting attachments are equipped with a carbide tip, and their shaft has a screw shape. Thanks to this, they are able to go deep into the solid without any problems. concrete surface.

If you will use an impact drill, then you need to choose drills with a shank cylindrical shape. Their surface should be flat and smooth for better sliding.

Good to know: When drilling, cutting tools become noticeably blunt. From time to time they will have to be sharpened and then continue to work. And if you use Pobedite drills, don't forget that they are susceptible to high temperature. Therefore, you need to take breaks and let the drill cool down. At the same time, we also recommend lubricating the drill with a special fluid that reduces the heating rate.

To make a large hole, you will need a concrete drill bit. She is a hollow cutting tool cylindrical shape. His key feature in that all the cut material passes inside the cylinder. Due to this, the core does not interfere with the normal entry of the tool into the slab. Some of the crowns are equipped with special cutting segments or high-strength diamond crowns.

If you are using a hammer drill, then it is best to use crowns with teeth made of hard metal alloys. Diamond spraying is necessary when non-impact drilling occurs with the use of a coolant. Big Advantage such a tool - wear resistance. However, during operation, it still becomes dull and you will have to restore it. If you are drilling a small hole, such as a socket hole in concrete, you can hold the tool in your hands. With more complex work ah during drilling, it is necessary to fix a special drilling rig to the wall with anchors.

Among the most commonly used tools are rotary hammers and electric drills. They are great for drilling holes up to 10 cm. However, rebar in concrete can easily break the bit or teeth. Therefore, we do not recommend using toothed bits for drilling reinforced concrete structures.

Always first study the characteristics and features of the drilling tool and material, and then select best option. If you do not have the opportunity to use a hammer drill, you can use an impact drill. But keep in mind that the effectiveness of such a tool is much worse. But if not large volumes enough work for you.

Drilling large diameter is a particularly difficult task. Here you will have to apply diamond drilling holes in concrete. It is quite difficult to make it yourself. In addition, you will have to use a non-impact electrical tool with the ability to supply water to the concrete surface at the drilling site.

How is the drilling process?

In order for all the work to be done with maximum accuracy, follow the instructions below.

Decide which tool you will be using for drilling. An impact drill is suitable for creating holes with a small depth and diameter, and a hammer drill, due to its more high power and speed is suitable for more complex work. But the principle of working with both tools is not much different.

There is a strict sequence in which concrete slabs are drilled:

  1. Find out where the electrical wiring lies in your walls. You may need to contact an electrician for this. If it is not possible to designate the places where the wiring lies, in no case do not drill at random. This is fraught with serious consequences and dangerous to health or even life.
  2. Make a marking in the places where you will drill holes. Make sure you have goggles and at least a gauze bandage to protect against dust. It is best to use respirators.
  3. At the drilling points indicated earlier, make marks with a drill with a standard sharpening. This will help you point the drill correctly in the right direction from the start so that it doesn't slip to the side the first time you try to drill.
  4. Stones are best broken with a punch. It is much less expensive than a concrete cutting tool and can be found in most construction kits. And if not, then you can buy it separately at the nearest building materials and tools store.
  5. In the process of drilling, every 5-10 minutes you need to cool the drill with water. Overheating can cause deformation of the drill itself, and it is almost impossible to straighten it to a normal state. I'll have to throw it away and get a new one. A deformed drill can cause significant damage to the surface of a concrete structure.
  6. Most likely, sooner or later you will stumble upon rebar or dense stones. You will hear the whistle and the characteristic ringing of fittings immediately. The drill must be removed immediately, and instead of it, use a punch and replace the pobetite one with a regular one designed to work with metal.
  7. When drilling concrete, after every 1.5-2 cm, without turning off the drill, make reverse movements so that the resulting dust and debris spill out of the hole. Thus, almost all the crumb is removed, and you will smoothly get close to the armature without damaging the tool. Make sure that during the drilling process you do not deviate from the originally set angle. Hold the tool firmly and stand firmly on the floor without stepping.
  8. To make the amount of dust flying around the room smaller, you can make a funnel for a drill or a puncher from a regular one. polyethylene film. This is an optional step, but it will save you the trouble of having a lot of litter in the room.

Advice. If you need to make a hole, for example, for an outlet, you can make several small ones at once in diameter, and cut out unnecessary concrete with a hammer and chisel. But keep in mind that the edges are likely to be uneven. It will greatly simplify the work of selecting a crown of the desired diameter. Great option- combine the work of a chisel and a crown. Do the rough work first, and then just correct the hole with a crown.

Drilling concrete with diamond core bits

This method has a number of advantages over the others. Diamond drilling ensures fast work speed, accuracy, low level noise and vibration. It is not for nothing that the technology has become one of the most sought after in construction work all over the world.

The drilling process can take place in different planes and at almost any angle. It doesn't matter, it vertical wall, ceiling or just concrete slab lying at an indefinite angle. With this method, the drilling depth sometimes reaches two meters and does not require much effort to work. The diameter that can be drilled reaches 50 centimeters. The speed at which drilling occurs in most cases is from one to six centimeters per minute, which is quite good.

For drilling, you will have to use special diamond equipment. ring crowns. drilling machine must be placed on a special frame and secured with anchors or a vacuum plate. The very process of transporting equipment and its installation is quite laborious, but the work is greatly simplified and occurs with much greater accuracy. In addition, using the guide, you can fully adjust the angle at which the hole will be drilled.

When starting the installation, you must wait until it picks up full speed. During this, water is supplied by pumps to the place where the future hole will be located. Water will cool the surface, the equipment itself, and also remove dust and dirt.

The main disadvantage of this drilling method is the cost of equipment. Buying it is usually out of the question. Yes, rent can be very expensive. Especially if they are really new models with a wide range of features and fine-tuning options. But at correct use such a diamond installation, all costs are quickly paid off thanks to highest speed, accuracy and minimal noise that won't annoy you or your neighbors. Therefore, we advise you to overpay if you need a really high-quality result and a minimum of problems. In addition to all of the above, we will definitely emphasize that after working with such a tool there is no need to additionally process holes, and dust and debris from it are many times less than when working with conventional drill or perforator.

And if you are serious about making holes in concrete yourself, the tool is the first and most important thing that you need to choose with all responsibility. And then follow the instructions and get a quality result.

Each of us at least once in our lives faced the task of hanging a shelf, picture or other object in our apartment, and since the walls of the domestic housing stock predominantly concrete, this occupation requires some skill and necessary tool at hand.

Sometimes this procedure takes on a non-trivial character, because the walls can have a heterogeneous structure, including iron reinforcement or crushed stone, and the usual concrete is quite durable, so today we will tell the reader how to make a hole in a concrete wall and what is needed for this. .

First of all, you need to decide on the tool with which we will drill the wall - the choice is between a drill and a puncher. If you have only one of these tools at your disposal, then the agony of choice disappears by itself, but for those who plan to rent equipment, we recall that a puncher is a device designed specifically for this type of work, and therefore in most cases fit better. And the available range of outlet section sizes is much larger than that of a drill.

But the drill also has its advantages, for example, when it comes to foam concrete structures - a puncher will simply crumble such a base. Remember that the drill must be an impact drill, a non-impact one will not bring results and will most likely be damaged. Therefore, if you are wondering whether it is possible to drill with a drill concrete wall, then know that the answer depends on the type of drill and the material of the wall itself.

Drill

An impact drill differs from the more common unstressed one in that the movement of the drill in it is carried out with the help of special ratchets with teeth. It is very elementary in use, it is enough just to put the tool in shock rotation mode and get down to business. Even more important for the success of the component are the nozzles suitable for our task - drills, read their list in one of the paragraphs below.

Beyond Choice the right tool and consumables for it, we note a couple more features of drilling concrete walls with a drill. If you do decide to work with a hammerless drill, then stop while drilling and help with your hands, driving a sharpened drill with a hammer, then continue using the drill. If the drill is low-power, then let it rest more often to avoid overheating.

In general, nothing is impossible, and with desire and diligence, you will surely be able to cope with the wall, having tools that are not quite suitable for this in the arsenal, but remember that if the surface does not lend itself, it is better to postpone the idea if you do not want to say goodbye to your drill.

perforator

With this tool, everything is simple:

  1. To begin with, we check its serviceability, clean the shaft shaft from debris.
  2. Insert the drill until it clicks
  3. We bring the tool perpendicular to the wall and start drilling, pressing a little. The drill, in the case of a long process, is moistened from time to time with plain water so that it does not overheat.
  4. If the drill is stuck, then we simply take it out of the puncher, insert a tool of a smaller diameter and try to release the stuck object with it, expanding the hole.

What drills are suitable

As promised, we are considering drills suitable for our venture. We will fit the following:

  1. Concrete drills with a pobedite tip - do a good job with the material due to the cutting edge of the teeth based on hard alloys. The margin of safety is enough even for drilling metal, but the impact mode quickly renders them unusable. If you need to make a hole between the reinforcement - this is the best option.
  2. Diamond crown for hammerless drilling - a modern nozzle that opens the material of any strength due to diamond coating.
  3. Crown KS - in them on cutting edge diamond crystals settled, which makes them something in between the two previous types.

If your house or apartment has concrete walls, then most likely you will need to hang something on them someday. It is clear that there is no need to “reinvent the wheel” in this case, because you just need to know exactly how to drill a concrete wall.

Concrete wall

In one hundred percent of cases, the wall will be reinforced with metal rods, the thickness of which usually exceeds 12-14 mm. Such material is inherently plain concrete is no longer, moving into the category of "reinforced concrete", which refers to more durable materials than its "parent".

In addition, do not forget that the material is more than 90% coarse aggregate. This role is played by crushed stone of rocks with increased density and, accordingly, strength. But since the crushed stone pebbles cannot be pressed too tightly against each other, in the space between them there is sand and cement, which turn the concrete into a single monolith.

Tool

Simply put, having decided to drill concrete, you should understand that you will work with rock, which was first disassembled into “spare parts”, and then glued back together, while reinforcing with metal rods.

Under such conditions, trying to drill with a conventional drill is fraught not only with a spoiled mood (not all attempts will be successful, and the drills will be strong), but also with a broken tool.

It is much more efficient to use a puncher that is designed specifically for such work. Combining impact and rotational action, this tool will cope with the task quickly and easily, unless, of course, you forget to equip it with a special concrete drill.

A suitable drill can be bought at any hardware store, while there you will be offered a choice of drills from several manufacturers. Which of them will be better than its competitor can only be determined empirically, so in such a situation it is better to use the seller's hint. But you should follow his advice only if he really understands this issue (to be sure of this, ask him to tell you how this drill differs from its neighbor on the shelf).

You will learn about the differences in the operation of a drill and a hammer drill from this article.

Drilling the wall

  • If the wall you need to drill is wallpapered to keep it from getting dirty while you work, use a vacuum cleaner (you will also need an assistant to hold the vacuum cleaner). If there is no assistant, under the future hole with the help masking tape paste newspapers or old wallpaper. The paper covering the wall from dust and dirt should be wide enough (at least 50 centimeters).
  • Mark the location of the hole with a pencil. Make sure that this place does not pass electric wires, otherwise then you will have to deal with the repair of electrical wiring. A "collision" with a live wire will also not pass without a trace for the puncher.
  • Having picked up a drill of the diameter you need, fix it in the puncher.

  • Switch the rotary hammer to the "drilling with impact" mode - this way your work will go faster.
  • Have your assistant remove the brush from the vacuum cleaner, turn it on and maintain metal pipe just below the future hole.
  • Put the hammer drill against the wall and start drilling it, pressing down on the hammer with your weight. Constantly check the horizontality and depth of the hole.
  • When you reach the desired depth, carefully remove the drill so that concrete dust does not scatter.
  • After removing the punch, use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of the remaining dust in the hole.

Comments:

How to drill concrete? This question often arises among craftsmen during the construction and repair of dwellings with. It is necessary to drill concrete in order to install electrical sockets and switches, lay pipes, wires and other communications.

When drilling concrete, a beginner faces a lot of problems, such as a broken drill, or even a drill.

Concrete is very durable material. drilling in the usual way he fits in very badly. And if it is reinforced (reinforced concrete), this task becomes almost impossible with a conventional drill. How to drill concrete? The problem of making holes in this material is becoming more and more popular.

How to drill concrete?

The main tools for drilling such structures today are a drill equipped with an impact mechanism and a hammer drill. Correctly drill concrete with a hammer drill. It's designed for just that. Holes made by a perforator may have enough big sizes both in depth and diameter. It is possible to drill a wall using special working tools with carbide coating or victorious inserts. The most common ways to use this tool are:

The most powerful tool for drilling concrete structures is a hammer drill.

  • usage conventional tool with the additional use of a punch;
  • the use of a hammer drill or impact drill, equipped with special tools;
  • drilling with diamond tools.

It is very difficult to make a hole in the wall in the usual way, and it takes a lot of time. The tool quickly becomes blunt and fails. How to drill a wall? The drilling point must constantly receive rotational and impact action. The rotational movement is achieved with a drill, and the impact movement is achieved with a punch and a hammer. An old drill can be used as a punch. Hammer strikes on its butt. In this case, the concrete layer is partially destroyed. Destroyed particles are removed with a drill. The hole is slowly deepening. The most common method is to make holes with a puncher and a special cutting tool. The work is going pretty fast and well. A small amount of work can be done with an impact drill with a carbide tool.

Diamond drilling is used for sufficiently large volumes of work. This method allows you to deal with the matter very quickly and without a large number dust. How to get large diameter holes? This is done using diamond-coated bits or carbide inserts. In some cases, special installations with a water vacuum cleaner are used. But usually a perforator copes with such a task quite well. It is recommended to periodically remove the drill from the hole and moisten it with water.

Tools inserted into the drill chuck are usually produced with a diameter of 4 mm or more. The largest diameter is 1.2 cm. Their length can be 40 cm. A plastic dowel is inserted into the finished hole, and a self-tapping screw is screwed into it. The diameter of the dowel must match the diameter of the hole. For hanging cabinets and other pieces of furniture, it is recommended to drill holes and use dowels with a diameter of 8 mm.

Drills for puncher

The drills used in the puncher are commonly called drills. Drills can have a diameter of 4 mm to 28 mm. At the same time, they have different length(diameter and length in millimeters):

  • 4 — 50;
  • 5 — 100;
  • 6 — 150;
  • 8 — 250;
  • 10 — 540;
  • 12 - more than 1000.

The drill for the perforator has an SDS-plus shank. Other shanks may be used in industrial installations. Making holes with a diameter of 35 mm or more is carried out with tools that are popularly called crowns. Their maximum diameter is 12 cm. Along the perimeter of the crown there are solderings made of pobedit or diamond coating. Crowns work without switching on the percussion mechanism. The hole is drilled in several steps to allow the cutting tool and motor to cool. Core bits drill well in tiles, so tiled concrete walls can be drilled without changing tools.

You can buy special drills and crowns in numerous tool and construction equipment stores.

A few tips:

  1. Before fixing the tool in the chuck of a puncher or drill, it must be cleaned of dirt.
  2. The shank of the drill must enter into the cartridge until it stops.
  3. For household drills and rotary hammers, every 15 minutes of work, you need to take a break for 10-15 minutes.
  4. The drill is recommended to be moistened periodically with water.
  5. Before making holes in the wall, make sure that there are no pipes and electrical wiring in it.
  6. You can use a metal detector to find pipes and wires in the wall.
  7. Work should begin with the shock mechanism turned off and at low speeds.
  8. The depth of the hole should be slightly greater than the length of the dowel that will be inserted into it.
  9. The depth of drilling can be noted by screwing a coil of electrical tape onto the drill.
  10. When working, it is recommended to use personal protective equipment.
  11. Better buy drills well-known manufacturers. Great choice Bosch products.
  12. A diamond tool will help you quickly and accurately drill many identical holes.
  13. Drills and drills for concrete cannot be used when drilling metal and wood.

Drilling concrete walls is not a very simple task, but it is quite doable even at home.

Concrete structures, walls and ceilings are not uncommon in our houses and apartments. AT high-rise building they are generally used with particular frequency, since houses with concrete walls are the most reliable. The reliability of concrete is determined by the good strength of such a material, which is achieved by using the right components. concrete mix and quality work done on its construction.

And here we are proud of our strong walls. But usually it becomes necessary to drill a hole in this very wall. And this may be needed quite often, for example:

  • when finishing walls and ceilings;
  • during the installation of air conditioners;
  • when installing plumbing;
  • when embedding furniture;
  • when working with electrical wiring, its installation;
  • the need for holes for mounting a picture or other interior items.

As you can see, there are many reasons to drill a wall. The main thing is not only to do the job well, but also to make your life easier using the right good tool. Which one can I choose to drill concrete?

It would seem that there is such a thing here: just take yourself a regular drill and drill. But no, in fact, in the process of performing this task, many difficulties can arise. Firstly, concrete walls are very strong and hard to take, and secondly, their structure is heterogeneous, and you can easily run the risk of falling on gravel or a piece of reinforcement. You can get stuck with an ordinary concrete wall for a long time and never drill anything in the end.

How to drill a hole?

The answer to this question will not be too difficult. The fact is that drilling a wall of concrete, as mentioned above, is an extremely difficult process. To solve this issue, it is worth using one of two types of tools: either a puncher or a drill.

Both will be good certain conditions. I'll explain why. It is best, of course, to use a hammer drill: it is intended specifically for concrete walls and it is common practice to use it. After all, the puncher easily breaks through both stone and concrete surfaces. Another of its advantages is the ability to drill holes of large diameter, which a drill cannot do.

But, if you have a foam concrete wall in front of you, or if you need to drill a few small holes, a drill is quite suitable. In this case, the puncher can split the surface of the wall, which is not very successful. But, as already mentioned, on big holes do not count, only with a diameter of no more than 12-15 cm. In addition, drilling a concrete wall has its own nuances, which we will discuss below.

How to drill a concrete wall with a conventional drill?

Let's talk a little about drilling with a conventional drill. So, let's start with the fact that the usual one is unlikely to fit here. Those. theoretically it is, of course, possible. But in practice it is extremely difficult. In this case, it is necessary to use a special drill drill for work on concrete with a tip coated with a composition of hard alloys.

The best way is to use a special impact drill. How is it different from the usual one? The fact that in such a drill the movements of the drill are carried out due to special ratchets with teeth interacting with each other. Such a drill is not difficult to use to hold high quality work. To do this, simply transfer the drill from the normal mode, rotational, to the shock rotation mode.

But no matter what type of drill you use, how relevant is the use of specialized nozzles. Nozzles (crowns) are sold in two configurations: for impact or non-impact drilling.

The classification of nozzles is as follows:

Crowns gear for drilling with impact function. A concrete wall can be drilled with these hole saws with a cutting edge made of separately soldered hard alloy teeth. For keyless chucks, drills are available for such drills with SDS tails. Their strength is so high that it is possible to cut the metal, only the impact mode contributes to their destruction, creating unacceptable loads. That is why such drills are used to drill a hole between the reinforcement of reinforced concrete slabs or brick walls.

Diamond core bit for unstressed drilling. These are more modern nozzles that simplify the task several times better than usual ones. Abrasive edges with cutouts on them are created by diamond spraying or corundum sand spraying. As you know, diamond is distinguished by its unprecedented strength. That is why it easily copes with the reinforcement of a concrete wall. Such a nozzle can make a hole at least 1.5 meters deep and more than half a meter in diameter. This type of nozzle is already used by professionals, but nozzles with a diameter of up to 100 mm may well be used in domestic conditions.

KS standard crowns. Crowns with diamond crystals embedded on the cutting edge. They can be used for slabs, rocky soils, monolithic concrete structures made of high-strength grades. It can easily replace carbide serrated bits.

Based on your conditions, you can safely choose the necessary drill for the drill and drill a hole. But there are also a number of recommendations for working with a conventional drill that is not equipped with an impact function.

To do this, you start drilling the wall, but are periodically interrupted. You need to drive a pointed drill into the concrete surface with your hands and destroy the concrete with metal punches. We take our drill or a chisel, other metal devices of the appropriate and necessary diameter for us and hit them with a hammer / sledgehammer. Rotate the punch periodically. Then take the drill again.

Please note that when drilling a hole in a concrete wall with a conventional drill, you risk breaking the tool. Be sure to give a low-power drill a rest. Drills also tend to heat up, so you need to cool them with water. At the same time, take a break every 10-15 minutes of work, leaving the same amount of time for the tool to take a break.
