Plywood is not only unique construction material but also an excellent basis for making various crafts. Moreover, for this you will need a minimum of tools - manual or electric jigsaw, the plywood sheet itself, and the result is more dependent on human imagination.

Scope and advantages of plywood sheets

There are many options for using this material, in the general case, we can distinguish such ways of using plywood as:

  • floor sheathing, and plywood can be used both for leveling and for floor insulation;
  • wall sheathing - unlike drywall, plywood sheets are much stronger, although they weigh more, and are susceptible to moisture;
  • formwork device when concreting foundations or making concrete blocks;
  • solid base device for soft roofing material, for example, under bituminous tiles;

  • manufacturing various crafts, ranging from simple figures to complex mechanisms in which even moving parts are made of plywood. In general, in the question of what can be made of plywood manual jigsaw, the only limiter is the imagination and perseverance of a person, so the scope for creativity is simply limitless;
  • full-fledged furniture can also be made from plywood, and its strength is in no way inferior to ordinary wood.

This material has a number of advantages:

  • even thin material has outstanding strength, due to the layered structure of the material. consists of several layers of veneer, and when gluing the fibers of each layer are at an angle to the previous one, so that such a sheet works just fine for bending;

  • through the use adhesive mixtures when gluing veneer layers, plywood is not afraid of moisture;

Note! For use inside the house, sheets with the FC marking should be chosen, which means that when gluing, urea glue was used that does not contain phenolic compounds that are dangerous to human health.

  • purchase big leaf plywood can be for about 500-700 rubles, it will be enough for several dozen complex crafts. So the price can also be considered an advantage of this material.

Jigsaw rules

When making any craft, cutting plywood with a jigsaw (manual or electric) is indispensable.

In this case, there are several rules that should be followed in any case:

  • the plywood sheet itself is quite flexible, so if you try to cut it without a rigid backing, it will bend and stick to the pattern line will be difficult. The stand can be made from an ordinary thick board with a hole in the center for a jigsaw file; it is attached to the desktop with an ordinary clamp;

Note! It is important to correctly install the file in the jigsaw before starting work. The direction of the teeth should be as shown in the figure.

  • when cutting plywood with a jigsaw, the tool itself is held perpendicular to the sheet, you do not need to press hard on it;
  • when working, it is not the jigsaw that should be rotated, but the plywood sheet itself;
  • it is unlikely that with curly sawing it will be possible to do without sharp turns and sharp corners. In order to get a sharp turn or sharp angle, the instruction requires moving the jigsaw up and down in one place, gradually turning the plywood sheet so that a small hole is formed in it, in which the file will turn freely. After that, you can cut the desired angle;
  • it may also be necessary to cut out blind holes, which cannot be approached from the edge. In this case, you can simply drill a hole in it, insert a file into it, and only then fix it on the frame of the jigsaw. After that, you can cut a hole of any shape.

Plywood products with a jigsaw do not have to be made using hand tool, the same quality can be obtained with the use of power tools.

Examples of do-it-yourself plywood products

It is physically impossible to consider all options within the framework of one article plywood crafts. But it is still worth dwelling on a few interesting options.

The simplest plywood crafts

For a test, you can try to make a couple of simple crafts, consisting of only one element. There are many options, for example, you can try to cut out the outline of an animal from plywood and then paint it in the desired colors.

This level of complexity is suitable even for children, the work will be performed in the following sequence:

  • first, the desired picture is simply printed on plain paper (or drawn by hand);
  • then you need to transfer the outline of the image to plywood. You can do this with carbon paper or simply cut out the image and stick it on a wooden base;

  • then we just carefully cut along the contour, even a child of preschool age can make such products from plywood with a jigsaw;
  • after sawing, it remains only to process the figure with emery and paint it. In order for the figurine to look bright, it is advisable to use a wood primer and only then paint.

You can complicate the task a little and try to make a figurine consisting of several elements, for example, a Christmas tree or a snowman. A plywood herringbone with a jigsaw will consist of 2 parts connected in a thorn-groove type.

For manufacturing, it will only be necessary to circle 2 contours of the future Christmas tree on plywood and provide grooves in both elements. In one part, the cutout is made from above, and in the second - from below, the size of the cutout is up to the middle of the height of the future Christmas tree.

After sawing, you will need to sand the surface of the plywood and walk along the edge to remove burrs and smooth out sharp edges. The dimensions of the grooves in the bottom and upper parts must match exactly.

Note! Many do-it-yourself drawings of plywood products with a jigsaw can be found on the Internet, for example, on our portal. This is much more convenient than drawing on your own.

After mastering figured cutting, you can move on to crafts consisting of several parts. As an example, we can give a snowman figurine, consisting of a torso, head, two legs and arms, all these elements will be connected to each other with an ordinary thick thread.

The basic principle remains the same - we draw up a drawing, cut out individual parts from a plywood sheet, and then proceed to combine them. In addition to working with a jigsaw, you will have to drill thin holes in plywood in order to thread a thread through them.

A plywood snowman is assembled into one piece with a jigsaw; you can put a small bright scarf around your neck. As is the case with other crafts great importance has the color of the figurine, the coloring should leave the impression that the snowman has just been brought into the room from the frost.

There are many options for relatively small and simple crafts, and drawings of plywood work with a manual jigsaw can always be made independently or simply found on the Internet.

We complicate the task

If you have a jigsaw, you can try to take on a larger task. It is relatively easy to make an elegant frame for a picture from plywood, and the picture itself can be made entirely of plywood.

A plywood picture is easy to get by combining light plywood and a dark background. You just need to cut in the sheet light color the desired outline and then fix it in a frame over a dark background. Due to this, the desired effect is achieved, outwardly such paintings look no worse than ordinary ones, even more unusual, because traditional painting is more common.

As for the technology, to make a picture, you only need a template with the location of the cutouts. You can make it yourself, for this it is enough to make the image you like black and white, add contrast and manually outline the position of the cutouts. Number of layers of plywood different shades limited solely by the skill of the author.

Thin plywood is also suitable for making a frame for a picture or photograph, and frames made of plywood with a jigsaw can also be solid, that is, sawn from one piece of plywood. The simplest plywood frame is a closed plywood contour (rectangular, square or oval) with figured cutting along the outer perimeter.

On such a frame, various plywood figures can be fixed, thereby creating the feeling for the viewer that they just sat down to rest. You can limit yourself to a simple neutral pattern.

Note! If you plan to make a photo frame, then it makes sense to focus on the back side so that the frame stands steadily on the table.

mechanical plywood crafts

Making such a craft from scratch is a rather complicated undertaking, and the main difficulty will be in the design. For example, a plywood machine with a jigsaw has more than a dozen parts of complex shape, a deviation of even 1.0-1.5 mm will make it impossible to assemble the model, so drawing up a drawing is the main difficulty.

You can simply purchase a ready-made set of factory-made parts, but it is much more interesting to cut out all the details yourself according to the drawings and assemble a car model with your own hands. All that is needed is patience and perseverance, after all, there are a lot of details, and their shape is not the simplest. The remaining steps are the same - sanding, application acrylic primer and painting.

Another option is to simply create from plywood original case, for example, for wall clock leaving only the dial visible. It will look original, you can connect the individual elements into one whole with glue.

From plywood can be made and more complex products with moving elements, also made of plywood. In this case, it is better to purchase or download drawings of plywood products with a jigsaw, it will be difficult to make them yourself, since it will also be necessary to calculate the number of teeth and the size of gears, shafts and other moving elements, without the appropriate skills it is difficult to do this.

plywood furniture

Such furniture weighs a little, and in terms of strength it is not inferior to analogues made of solid wood and even surpasses them (due to the layered structure of the material). To make an original table, bench or chair, you only need a jigsaw and thick sheet plywood of the appropriate size.

Do-it-yourself drawings of plywood furniture with a jigsaw can be prepared independently, the difficulty arises at another stage - it often becomes necessary to bend the plywood sheet.

You can solve this problem in 2 ways:

  • after steaming the place of the bend, you can withstand the plywood for 20-30 minutes hot water and then try to give it the desired shape;

  • in the place of the bend with an equal step, cuts can be made, not reaching the edge of the sheet by 2-3 layers of veneer, then the plywood is bent, and the bend is smeared with glue.

It is not necessary to make furniture from plywood entirely. For example, the tabletop can be plywood, and the legs can be ordinary wood, the sides of the bench can also be cut from a sheet with a thickness of more than 10 mm, and the seat and back can be laid from the boards.

In conclusion

Plain plywood sheet skillful hands can turn into a real masterpiece. The only limit when working with this material is the author's imagination, so you can make anything, from simple animal figurines to copies of world-famous architectural structures.

It is also important that only a jigsaw and sandpaper are needed from the tools, so no special expenses are foreseen. The video in this article shows the manufacturing process original painting from plywood.

In the comments to the article, you can always clarify your questions about working with plywood.

The work of a designer in a broad sense implies that a person has developed fantasy, ability to generate creative ideas and embody them in the form of objects that have a completely utilitarian purpose. Ease of processing, the ability to create amazing things from affordable and inexpensive material elevated plywood to the rank of favorites among many modern fashionable masters of furniture and interior items.

You can make any thing out of plywood: furniture, boxes, decorations, everything that has enough imagination and carpentry skills.

You can make almost anything you want out of plywood with your own hands. Even the hulls of small boats are made from its moisture-resistant variety. Plywood trimmed with plastic or veneer of expensive wood species is used in interiors and as finishing and for making furniture. Durable and cheap, environmentally friendly pure material suitable for making children's toys, design solutions in the design of the garden, boxes for storing food and various small things.

Manufacturing technology

Types of plywood boxes and ways to connect the walls.

For the product to serve long time and looked quite attractive, you need to know the rules for processing the material from which it will be made. Unlike solid wood, plywood is thin sheets of veneer glued together so that the fibers of one layer are perpendicular to the direction of the fibers in the other. This allows the sheets to be bent in any direction, creating complex shapes. But when sawing across the fibers of the top layer, there is a possibility of damaging it. Therefore, when working with plywood, you need to follow a few simple rules:

  • to prevent cracking of the surface when cutting across the fibers, you must first make an incision with a knife along the cutting line;
  • before driving nails or screwing screws, drill holes for them;
  • washers should be placed under the caps of the fasteners;
  • when gluing the surface, it is necessary to clean it with sandpaper, apply glue in an even layer over the entire surface and ensure uniform compression of the parts to be joined;
  • to bend the elements, they are pre-moistened or steamed out, after which they are placed in a template and kept in the desired position for at least a day;
  • thin plywood(up to 1.5 mm) is cut with a sharp knife, sheets up to 6 mm thick are sawn with a jigsaw, and thicker ones with a circular saw;
  • the edges of the cut parts may have burrs when cutting at home, which requires their mandatory processing with a file or grinder.

To make almost any plywood item, you will need a small set of tools:

  • sharp knife, electric jigsaw with a set of files;
  • drill, a set of drills and bits, a screwdriver;
  • joiner's glue or suitable for working with wood;
  • file, sandpaper;
  • measuring tool, pencil;
  • fasteners.

Plywood boxes

Figure 1. Scheme of a plywood box under the bed

To train and acquire the necessary skills to work with a new home master material, you need to start with the manufacture of the simplest containers for various needs. In such boxes you can store tools, photographs and documents, various small items, etc. Dimensions are selected individually based on the purpose of the boxes (Fig. 1).

For manufacturing, plywood with a thickness of 6 and 15 mm is required. The front and back walls, the bottom and the lid of the box are cut out of a thin sheet. Thicker material will go to the sidewalls. The handle can be made from plywood of any thickness, depending on personal preference, or you can use a piece of thin bar.

Determine the dimensions of the parts, mark and cut the blanks. Sand the edges with fine grit sandpaper. In the side parts, mark the places for the grooves along which the cover will move. The bottom of the box will be inserted into the same grooves. The grooves are made with a special cutter 6.2 mm. Drill 4 mm in front and back walls drill holes for self-tapping screws at a distance of 7.5 mm from the side edges.

The plywood box is assembled in the following order:

The box is assembled with self-tapping screws and glue.

  • grease the ends of the side walls with glue, attach and attach the back wall to them on self-tapping screws;
  • glue the grooves for the bottom of the box with glue and place the desired part there;
  • fix the front wall on glue and self-tapping screws;
  • place the lid in the grooves, check the ease of movement and, if necessary, sand the sliding surfaces with sandpaper;
  • glue the handle or fix it with screws from the bottom, from the inside of the cover.

Sand the finished product again over the entire surface and cover with paint or varnish to protect it from moisture. If desired, you can decorate it in any way possible.

Mini chest of drawers for small items

You can assemble a mini plywood chest of drawers for storing small tools or other small items.

From several plywood boxes, you yourself can assemble a mini chest of drawers for storing hand-made parts or small tools, nails and other small things. Drawers for a mini chest of drawers do not need a lid, so you only need to mark and cut the details for the walls and bottom. For convenience, a small notch-handle is made in the details of the front wall. The boxes are assembled as described above.

Determining the quantity and size drawers, you can calculate the size of the chest of drawers in which they will be placed. The height of the side and back walls will be equal to the total height of all drawers with the addition of the total thickness of the partitions between the floors of the chest of drawers. The width of the sidewalls should be a few millimeters greater than the length of the box, so that when closed it does not protrude beyond the front wall. The bottom, lid and partitions are determined based on the length of the drawer (shelf width) and the total width of all drawers on the same level, adding a few millimeters to the gaps between the drawers.

The walls of the chest of drawers, the bottom and the lid are made of thick plywood (15 mm). They are connected, as in the previous case, with glue and self-tapping screws, first forming the chest of drawers. After that, the shelves-partitions are installed at the desired distance from each other (the height of the box). The final step is to attach the back wall.

Furniture

Figure 2. Armchairs and sofas made of lamellas are assembled from identically sawn parts.

Minimalist furniture is in increasing demand due to the relatively low price. Modern designers have long turned their attention to plywood as a material for its manufacture. There are 2 main types of plywood furniture:

  • objects collected from lamellas;
  • prefabricated puzzle furniture.

Designers J. and L. Dressler make elegant openwork furniture from birch plywood, which even a novice craftsman can do. The secret of designers is that their armchairs and sofas are assembled from many elements (lamellas) that repeat the shape of each other. The surfaces of the backs or seats are formed by the edges of the lamellas. Thanks to this technology, bent parts are not required for the manufacture of furniture. The slats are sawn according to a template and assembled in a certain order on threaded fasteners (Fig. 2).

As can be seen from the figure, the chair consists of 3 types of parts: the back and seat, the base and the parts connecting them. The bench is assembled from the same L-shaped parts, which are deployed in relation to each other and are interconnected in the seat area. To fasten the parts together, metal studs with washers and nuts were used.

In order to make such things, you will need to draw a piece of furniture of the desired configuration and draw the outline of the lamella on its lateral projection. Enlarge image to right size, transfer it to plywood and cut out the details. Their number depends on the thickness of the plywood and the desired width of the object. In this case, the gaps between the lamellas must be taken into account. If the parts are sawn as a whole, then between them, washers cut from the same plywood can be put on the fastening stud to form gaps. In the case of assembling furniture from parts similar to those shown in the figure, the gaps are formed as a result of placing the ends of the lamellas of one type between elements of another type.

It is important to drill holes for fasteners in exactly the same place on each part.

Figure 3. Chair and table template.

To do this, use a template with holes, which is applied to each lamella, marking exactly all the places of the holes. The assembly is carried out by putting the parts on the pin one by one.

A variant of such furniture can be items made of two side lamellas, rigidly fastened together with studs. Between them, in the transverse direction, a number of planks or solid parts of the seat, back or tabletop are attached to the screws and glue.

Prefabricated furniture can be made even by a person without the skills of a carpenter. You can develop part diagrams yourself if you understand well how the parts of such a constructor are connected. On fig. 3. diagrams of a chair and a table are shown and finished goods, the details of which are held by cuts, where they are inserted.

Plywood is a material undeservedly offended by furniture manufacturers. It is environmentally friendly, has high wear resistance and durability. Despite the low cost, manufacturers continue to give preference to even cheaper, but short-lived chipboard.

Of course, you can order plywood furniture, but why not make a set out of it yourself? Such a new interior will be an exclusive, in which you can show all your imagination. In addition, for this you do not need to become a carpenter at all: a minimum of tools and skills is enough.

How to choose plywood?

IN the highest degree easy-to-use material seems to call for creativity and experimentation. Despite its strength, plywood is easy to cut and construct. The sheet can be given any desired shape: it bends and does not break.

Plywood is a number of sheets of veneer glued together. As a rule, birch or coniferous trees are used, and inside the leaf can be made of softwood, and outside - birch. More expensive and high-quality plywood is made from hardwood.

When choosing plywood, pay attention to the following parameters:

  • The brand is responsible for the scope and moisture resistance. For furniture, sheets of the brand FK, FOF and FKM are suitable. The second option - laminated plywood, is the best, but more expensive than the others.
  • The variety characterizes appearance surfaces. Measured from IV to I, E - the highest grade. Each side has its own designation.
  • Surface treatment. As in the previous case, it is determined separately for the parties. The designation Ш1 means the presence of grinding on one side, Ш2 - on both sides. ШН - the surfaces were not subjected to grinding.
  • The formaldehyde content is indicated by the letter E with an index from 1 to 3 and characterizes the degree of environmental friendliness.

You also need to pay attention to the quality of gluing veneer sheets, the quality and type of wood, the appearance of the sheet. Plywood has an interesting texture and pattern, which can not be covered with an additional layer of paint. Give preference to manufacturers from Russia.

Instruments

What tools can a beginner carpenter do without? Plywood does not require complex special equipment. Majority necessary tools will be found in everyone.

A ruler, a compass, a tape measure and a square are needed to take measurements and build a drawing.

The choice of cutting tool depends on the thickness of the sheet being used. Enough for a sheet up to 1.5 mm thick sharp knife, up to 6 mm a jigsaw is needed, the thickest sheets require Circular Saw. To drill holes, you need a drill.

A chisel, planer, chisel, file and sandpaper are useful for processing parts. Connect the parts with glue, nails and screws. Stock up on tools to work with them.

The choice of fittings depends on what exactly you are going to do. Do not be stingy: high-quality fittings will last longer and will not let you down at the most inopportune moment.

Stages of work

Making furniture from plywood with your own hands begins with building a drawing. You can use both ready-made drawings, and draw your own. Take measurements of the room, calculate the dimensions of each part. Be extremely careful not to find the error when it's too late.

Transfer the details to the prepared sheets. Cut out the blanks with a suitable tool. Details are sanded, varnished or painted, carved. If plywood has an interesting pattern, why not leave it? Show your imagination and don't be afraid to experiment.

Parts are connected with nails, screws or glue. Pay special attention to the details that take on the main load.

After the glue has completely dried, check the resulting structure for strength. If the test is passed, congratulations: job done!

Ideas

Plywood is suitable for the manufacture of almost any home furniture: cabinets, tables and chairs, sofas and beds.

When assembling kitchen furniture use moisture-resistant and wear-resistant types of material. Don't forget about ventilation system and other communications: they should be freely accessible, but when they are not in use, it is better to hide them from view. Special attention give the hinged and corner cabinets, as they require precise calculations and care during assembly.

Plywood is ideal for creating children's furniture. Environmentally friendly material is safe, and due to its wear resistance, it will "endure" the games of the most active and restless child.

For the cabinet, choose plywood of sufficient height and length, since you need to use a single sheet. Thickness also plays important role: the larger it is, the stronger the structure will come out. When calculating the parameters of the side walls, consider the thickness of the doors. The bottom of the bed must be at least 18 mm thick. A beam should be used for the body frame.

From plywood it will turn out practical and inexpensive kit for giving.

Despite the simplicity of working with the material, a beginner should not immediately take on a complex project that requires experience. Start with something simple: a table, a chair. A rocking chair is considered a classic first job.

Plywood is not recommended to be cut across the grain. If necessary, make several cuts parallel to the future cut - this will avoid cracking. Moisten the surface of the plywood and fix it in the desired position for 10-16 hours: this is how you give it the desired shape.

Thick sheets of plywood (more than 10 mm) should be handled like wood. When working with softwood plywood, use nails and screws with washers to avoid damaging the sheet.

Holes must be pre-drilled at the joints of the parts. The same applies to holes for fittings. Before gluing, the parts must be sanded. The place of cut is processed with sandpaper.

There will be a lot of dust during operation, so it is better to work in separate room. If this is not possible, protect the furniture with covers in advance.

If you've never worked with blueprints, look up furniture blueprints online. Even if you can't find the right one, you'll get general idea how to draw it correctly.

Material and tools for cutting plywood

Before you start doing the work, you need to decide what you need?

First of all, it's the material. In this case, plywood is a material made from several layers of wood veneer (the minimum number of layers is 3), glued or bonded with a synthetic compound, in such a way that each new layer is laid perpendicular. The thickness of the sheet depends on the number of layers.

When choosing, you need to consider several details:

  • unpolished plywood (NSh);
  • plywood, sanded on one side (SH1);
  • Plywood, sanded on both sides (SH2).

If in the future there is no opportunity to process (grind) the material, then it is worth taking plywood of the type W1 or W2, this will greatly save time to achieve the desired result.

The next step is a tool to carry out the work or craft you have planned.

Tools to fulfill the idea

DIY Ideas

It all depends on your desire and taste, any coloring picture is perfect as a template, imagine that you are making an application, but instead of paper, there is another material (plywood).

Take any picture you like (with the proper skill and imagination, you can draw it yourself), transfer it to a plywood sheet and, by cutting along the traced contour, give it the desired shape. And there you can sand it, bring the processing to mind and you can start painting or burn something interesting and varnish it. Done, beauty on the site!

For prefabricated works, you will have to look for drawings on the Internet, for example, a drawing of a box.
