Most crop pests do not tolerate strong odors; this is basically what everyone repels. folk ways struggle.

Processing onions with ammonia from onion flies

According to gardeners, ammonia is the most effective tool protecting onions from onion flies. In order for this pest to leave the onion beds, it is necessary to prepare a water-ammonia solution and water the beds with it.

To do this, add 3 tbsp. to 10-liter water. l. ammonia, then wait for the evening and produce abundant watering soil. Due to the fact that the onion fly can settle on the site up to 3 times per season, then on the ground where its “work” has already been seen once, it is necessary to repeat this procedure 3 more times, that is, approximately process future harvest 1 time per month.

Watering onions not only removes the problem of onion fly colonization, but also nourishes the onion, saturating it with nitrogen, which in turn helps prevent yellowing of the onion feather.

If for some reason you decide not to use ammonia in the garden, you can try the following remedy.

Salt: as a means of combating onion fly in the beds

When the onion has grown, it is necessary to treat the planting with saline. The beds are watered 3 times per season at the following stages of bulb growth:

  1. When the sprouts have reached 5-8 cm. The proportion of the solution is one third of a pack of coarse rock salt per 10 liters of water.
  2. 14 days after the first watering - half a pack of salt per 10 liters of water.
  3. 3 weeks after the second watering - two-thirds of a pack of salt per 10 liters of water.

Attention! This method is not approved by all gardeners, since with such control measures, significant salinization of the soil occurs, after which other crops grow poorly on the site. Therefore, if you nevertheless decide to choose this method to fight the onion fly, be extremely careful and observe the timing of the application of the solution and proportions.

How to save onions from onion fly larvae with tobacco dust

Tobacco dust can be a good protector against onion flies. You can save the culture if you water the onion beds with the following solution - add 200 mg of tobacco dust to 10 liters. hot water, insist two days and spray onions once a week for 2 weeks.

Tobacco dust can be used in dry form, scattering it between the rows of onions at the rate of 1 tbsp. l. per 1 sq. meter.

Alternative methods of struggle:

  • In a 10 liter bucket of water, dissolve 1/4 laundry soap and water the beds.

onion fly- one of the most insidious pests in garden plots. It destroys the onion crop, nullifying the efforts of gardeners, their costs for planting material and fertilizers.

What kind of pest is the onion fly?

Knowing what an insect looks like and how it behaves makes it much easier to deal with it. Outwardly, it is so similar to an ordinary house fly that inexperienced gardeners can only recognize it by its smaller size.

Most of the victims admit that they initially mistook the onion fly for a young indoor insect. This mistake often leads to an aggravation of the situation and the death of the entire crop.

This happens because the pest multiplies extremely quickly. Getting out of winter shelter in May, each female manages to lay up to three dozen eggs.

During the summer, there is a change of 2-3 generations of the onion fly, so the destructive effect of the pest takes place in two waves, in June and August.

A thorough examination of young onion shoots in May will help to detect them in time. This gives some chances to get rid of the next generations and save a significant part of the crop. Approximately, the pupation period coincides with the flowering of cherries and lilacs, the pollen of which is fed by female flies.

All types and varieties of onions and garlic, including decorative ones, are susceptible to onion fly damage. The larvae and bulbs of tulips, lilies, daffodils, muscari and even some types of lettuce are happy to feast on them.

The defeat of the onion fly can be determined by the sharp yellowing of the shoots of the plant, which dry out over time. A decrease in the intensity of photosynthesis leads to malnutrition, as a result of which the bulbs stop growing. In the extreme stage of infection, they exude an unpleasant putrefactive odor.

Neglecting them increases the risk of re-infection and reduces the yield of onions. For example, the requirements for soil looseness, planting density and moisture balance provide for the creation of an unfavorable nutrient medium for the reproduction and growth of larvae. Soil covered with a smooth, dry crust is ideal for laying eggs.
  • Crop rotation. Alternating onion and carrot plantings is a very effective means of controlling the onion fly, which cannot stand the smell of carrots. Neighborhood with tomato or mint also minimize the risk of damage. A gross violation of crop rotation is considered to be planting onions in the same place for two consecutive seasons. Successfully overwintered fly larvae will wake up in the spring and continue to eat onions. For the same purpose, the soil is dug up in the fall in order to freeze the oviposition.

Industrial insecticides

Professionals recommend using them as a last resort and with great care. The watery cell structure of bulbous crops quickly accumulates toxic substances. The dosage of insecticides must strictly comply with the instructions.

Processing the bulbs by immersion in a weak pink solution is carried out before planting them. The aggressive environment of potassium permanganate neutralizes the larvae, which may be in the soil at the time of planting.

The mixture is prepared in a ratio of 3:1. Moreover, both components can perform the function of an insecticide and independently.
  • Red ground pepper. Hot seasoning is extremely unpleasant for tender larvae. An additional effect of pepper is protection from snails that eat sweet young shoots of onions and bulbous flowers.
  • Ammonia. Ammonia in its composition has a pungent odor, unbearable for insects. It burns the internal organs of the larva, quickly destroying large colonies. A tablespoon of ammonia must be diluted in 10 liters of water. Since ammonia is an unstable compound that is easily destroyed in the atmosphere, the bulbs and soil should be sprayed immediately after receiving the solution.
  • Birch tar. It is especially effective when processing bulbs before planting. AT plastic bag pour 1 tbsp. fly in the ointment, pour out planting material and shake. The tar is not poisonous, but its aroma repels the larvae. The advantage of tar is the odor resistance and, as a result, the insecticidal effect.
  • Kerosene. This is chemical compound not dangerous to humans, but poisonous to onion fly larvae. The soil at the bulb itself is well shed with a solution prepared from 2 tbsp. spoons of the drug and a bucket of water. Kerosene in combination with turpentine is often used in the fight against bark beetle. you can look at the link.

Prevention

  • You need to be extremely careful about the choice of planting material, examining it when buying.
  • It is necessary to reject all bulbs that have an uncharacteristic grey colour, soft tissues or fresh damage.
  • In the fall, after turning the soil, it is useful to introduce insecticides that will cope with the remaining offspring of the fly and have time to neutralize before the planting season. All affected bulbs found at harvest must be burned.
  • If a fly is found on any of the bulbous crops, prophylaxis is carried out on all plantings of the risk zone.
  • If on garden plot are used compost pits, they are regularly shed with infusions of insecticide plants. All purchased peat and humus is subject to a similar thorough check and disinfection.

A week later, white legless larvae up to 10 mm long appear, which begin to feed actively. They eat onion scales for several weeks, gnaw their way into the bulb, and then go into the ground to pupate. After 14-18 days, a new brood of flies appears. During the summer there is a change of two or three generations. Wintering of pupae occurs in the soil, at a depth of 5-20 cm.

Thus, the first generation harms the onion in June, and the second begins its malicious activity in July-August.

What is the harm from the onion fly

The first signs of damage by onion fly larvae are yellowing and drying of onion feathers, as a result of which the plant begins to lag behind in growth and the bulbs rot, which begin to exude a nasty smell.

Insects attack all types of onions, garlic, bulbous flower plants, some types of lettuce.

Preventive measures against onion flies

Protection against onion flies consists in:

  • processing of planting material before planting;
  • early sowing;
  • correct change of cultures;
  • planting in the immediate vicinity of plants that repel the onion fly;
  • autumn digging of the soil.

The use of agricultural practices in the fight against insect pests

Initially, you should responsibly approach the choice of planting material. It must be purchased in specialized stores, because this way you will be more likely to get high-quality bulbs.

If you still risk using dubious planting material, then before planting it in the ground, onion sets should be treated with hot water (you can directly when planting). The bulbs are placed in water heated to a temperature of +45 ... +46 ºС, they are kept there for 10-15 minutes, and at a temperature of +50 ... +52 ºС - 3-5 minutes. After that, they are dried.

Also onion sets before landing treated with a solution of potassium permanganate, and insecticides are used to disinfect blackberries.

The soil for onion plantings must be prepared in advance. Firstly, do not neglect the autumn deep digging of the earth (up to 25 cm deep), which helps to significantly reduce the number of any types of pests (pupae that appear on the surface will die from the cold), and secondly, since the onion fly does not tolerate salty taste, before planting the soil must be sprayed with saline.

Carrots, tomatoes and lovage planted nearby have a deterrent effect on the onion fly.

Did you know?The onion fly can't stand the smell of carrots, and the carrot fly can't stand the smell of onions. By planting onions and carrots next door, you can get rid of two pests at the same time.

Among the agrotechnical methods of pest control, one should also highlight the observance of recommendations on crop rotation. Onions should not be planted annually in the same place, and the culture can be returned to the same site only after four to five years.

It is also necessary to avoid organizing onion beds in areas where garlic, lettuce, and tulips have previously grown. The best predecessors for planting onions are tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers.

In order for the onion to have time to ripen and get stronger before the onion fly takes off and lays its eggs, it must be planted in more early dates. Mulching the soil with dry semi-rotted manure or peat, as well as needles, the smell of which repels the specified pest, will also help protect the plant from the onion fly. The fly does not lay eggs on loose soils.

At the first detection of damaged plants, they are removed from the soil and destroyed by burning.

Folk remedies for onion flies

If, nevertheless, agricultural practices did not help, and the larvae of the onion fly chose your onion beds, you will have to take more effective measures to destroy them. It is better to start with gentle methods, for example, spraying with folk remedies. Below you will find several folk recipes from an onion fly, tested on their plots by many gardeners.

Dandelion infusion

An effective remedy for repelling the onion fly and its larvae is the processing of onions. dandelion infusion. For its preparation, dandelion roots (200 g) are used, which are placed in 10 liters of water and infused for seven days.

Watering is carried out every two weeks. It is advisable to do the first treatment from pests in the spring, before the start of the fly. Onions are also watered with infusions of other insecticidal plants: mint, needles, decoctions of wormwood, valerian.

Spraying with a solution of tobacco dust

To prepare a repellent solution, you will need 200 g of tobacco dust, 10 liters of water and 30 g liquid soap. Dust and soap are added to freshly boiled water, leaving the solution to infuse for several days. After that, you can start the spraying process.

Tobacco dust is also used for sprinkling onion beds. For the same procedure, a mixture of tobacco dust and lime is suitable.

Spraying with saline

We already wrote above about spraying the soil before planting with saline. Salt irrigation is also used when pests are found on the beds. This is done three times per season, using a spray gun.

When the sprouts reach a height of 5 cm, they are watered with a solution prepared from 300 g of table salt dissolved in 10 liters of water. It is important that when watering the onion with salt, you avoid getting the solution on the leaves of the plant, but if the solution does get on the feathers, then they must be washed with clean water.

Further irrigation is carried out with more concentrated solutions. So, for the second time (15-20 days after the first), you can apply a solution of 450 g per 10 liters, for the third (20 days after the previous one) already 600 g of salt is dissolved in the same volume of water. After 3-4 hours, the solution from the soil must be washed off with clean water.

Important! This method can help to significantly reduce the number of pests, but it can also damage the soil.-lead to its excessive salinity.

A mixture of dry mustard and ash against an insect

Shows good results processing with a mixture of ash and dry mustard in a ratio of 3: 1. It is sprinkled on the beds when the fly flies out to lay eggs. To achieve a positive effect, the treatment should be carried out at least twice.

There are several more recipes for preparing a mixture of ash with the addition of black ground pepper and tobacco dust

    • ash - 200 g;
    • tobacco dust - 1 teaspoon;
    • ground black pepper - 1 teaspoon.
    • tobacco dust (1 part);
    • wood ash (part 2).
    Processing should be carried out 3-4 times with an interval of a week. Pre-plants are sprayed with water so that the mixture sticks better.

Powdering the soil with sunflower ash is also used. In addition to being a pest control agent, it will also be a fertilizer for the plant, feeding it with potassium and magnesium.
