Do-it-yourself rocking chair made of wood. How to make a rocking chair out of wood. Standard dimensions of the finished model

Handmade furniture will please not only the eye, but also the wallet. A great start for any master is a do-it-yourself rocking chair. This original item will favorably emphasize and complement any interior. Everything you need to create an exclusive model: carefully selected material, correct drawing and, of course, the desire to create a masterpiece.

What to make a rocking chair?

A master class on creating this furniture begins with the selection of material. Since it must be strong and reliable in order to serve long time, then it is worth giving preference to durable, environmentally friendly clean materials. To make furniture, it is better to choose plywood, wood, metal or wicker. It all depends on the chosen model.

  • Plywood product will fit perfectly into country interior- it is openwork, light, but has a serious minus - the fear of water. It can be placed both in the house and taken out to the gazebo, but a sudden rain can significantly spoil the chair.
  • A product made of wood (beech or oak) can be called eternal, but on condition correct operation with material. It has practically no drawbacks, except for one thing - it is more difficult to work with wood than, for example, with plywood, you must have certain carpentry skills.
  • A metal product is resistant and durable, but has a minus - it is very heavy. Due to the influence of metal on the center of gravity, the chair sways quite sharply or may roll over.
  • A wicker product made from a vine is the most ergonomic. In the manufacture, nails or screws are not used, all connections are held on weaving and glue.

We make furniture

A homemade rocking chair has standard dimensions, so the drawing for creating the product is general. However, there are still minor features, and they should be taken into account when designing at home.

Plywood armchair

You will need:

  • 3 sheets of quality plywood (preferably 1520x800 mm in size), the sheets must be different thickness– 4, 10, 15 mm;
  • 20 screws or self-tapping screws;
  • joiner's glue (PVA is not recommended);
  • jigsaw.

Having made a drawing, we prepare patterns. For this, thick cardboard is suitable, which can hold its shape. Cut out the details. Be sure to make a margin of 1-2 mm around the edges. After that, with the help of patterns, sheets of plywood are marked with a pencil. Details for the model are cut with an electric jigsaw.

It should turn out:

  • From the thickest plywood sheet (15 mm) - 2 side elements, 2 racks, 2 seat supports and 2 planks measuring 470x45 mm; plus an additional cross member 540x45 mm and a bar 485x45 mm.
  • From a 10 mm sheet - 18 planks 540x30 mm and 16 crossbars 500x30 mm for the seat.
  • From a sheet of 4 mm - 2 bases in the shape of a square for the seat and back.

Now a do-it-yourself rocking chair requires assembly. Be sure to clean up the parts first. sandpaper, otherwise the appearance of the product will be untidy. First of all, it is necessary to stick the existing cross members on the seat and backrest bases made of thin sheets. Now all the details are covered special paint, alternatively you can use varnish or stain (this is more economical option). It will take 3-5 hours for complete drying. All parts are assembled together and fastened with screws or self-tapping screws. For the beauty of the product, it is worth closing the caps of the fasteners with special plugs. The last step is the footrest. Its base must be made of metal. An old handle from a rake or shovel will do. The main thing is that the length should be approximately 530-550 mm. Plywood is attached to it.

from wood

You will need:

  • 3 euro pallets made of wood;
  • 4 running meters timber 50x100 mm (can be taken in pieces of 60 cm);
  • threaded rods 90 cm - 4 pcs.;
  • bolts with lock washers (diameter 12 mm) - 10 pcs.;
  • M10 bolts 50 mm long - 6 pcs.;
  • wood glue;
  • cardboard tubes 5 mm thick;
  • jigsaw and drill;
  • sandpaper with a high grit.

Before you make a rocking chair out of wood, you need to draw a drawing. Only after that start manufacturing.

It's worth starting with the analysis of the pallet. From it you need to pull out all the metal (staples, nails and screws). If this is done inattentively, then the structure may rot over time. We process all damaged corners and edges with sandpaper.

It's time to work with the bars. From 6 bars, 2 side trapezoidal frames are made, from 4 - L-shaped sidewalls for the seat, and the bars for the runners are rounded with a saw (for stability of the chair when swinging, the front of the runners is made shorter and with a high curvature relative to the back). All fastenings in this model are made on tongues, so as not to damage the wood.

At the beginning of the assembly, a cut is made on the upper part of the runners, vertical racks sidewalls, smeared with glue. Drying time at home - a day.

The next step is to drill holes in the L-shaped sides for the seat for cardboard tubes. They will be the back. Between the tubes it is worth leaving gaps of 5 mm so that air and moisture circulate. Before fastening, the tubes are lubricated with glue. It will take 4-5 hours to dry. It remains to insert the threaded rods into the junction of the seat and side supports. We tighten them with nuts. If the rods look out, then they can simply be cut off, and the cuts can be closed with plugs. The chair is once again cleaned and sanded, then varnished.

metal

A master class on creating a metal rocking chair is more difficult than the previous options. In this case, it is used welding machine and special tools.

You will need:

  • steel bars with cuts 20x20 mm;
  • steel sheet - 2 mm;
  • corners made of steel 40x40x3 mm;
  • welding machine, drill, grinder or hacksaw;
  • set of self-tapping screws for metal.

When developing a drawing, the width of the runners must be calculated. A wide arc is provided around the runners so that the furniture is stable.

Steel bars are cut into lengths of a meter and welded to the main frame. Indents, or the so-called frame step, are 5-6 mm. Steel is bent along an oval, welded to the base. Steel sheet screwed to the seat part with metal screws. The master class on creating metal furniture is over.

AT finished product all welds are cleaned. For this, a grinder or a file is suitable. The chair must be treated with an anti-corrosion agent or painted. For convenience, wooden planks are placed on top of the metal on the seat or braided with a vine.

from the vine

Before you make a rocking chair with your own hands from a vine, you will have to master the technique of weaving and the basics of preparing material. For beginners, branches of bird cherry or willow are suitable, which need to be harvested and processed according to a special technique.

You will need:

  • woven lower bench, seat, backrest, armrests;
  • 25 wicker 3 cm in diameter and about 50 thin ones 5 mm in diameter.

Zhamkoy ( special tool) bend the rods, fix the frame with the lower seat, attach the backrest and transverse rods. Woven armrests are attached to the base with special studs. Type-setting rods are inserted vertically and horizontally into the back of the product.

The final stage - a chair made of vines requires decoration. Along the edges, you can make decorative weaving from a thin ribbon.

Any master class offers universal calculations for work and drawings. To create an exclusive model, it is worth adjusting the furniture to the one who will use it.

The rocking chair rightfully occupies one of the favorite places at home. There are many types and models of swing structures made of various materials. One of the most popular, for the manufacture of rocking chairs, is metal. Metal rocking chair is made at home if available necessary experience and tool.

Drafting

A do-it-yourself rocking chair can be made with a supporting metal frame in the form of a frame or with forged filling. Wrought iron rocking chairs look much prettier, but are more difficult to make and require special equipment and skills.

frame drawings metal structure drawn up on graph paper in a convenient scale. They indicate all the dimensions of the future chair, the length and radius of the bend of the skis. The difference between the scheme for a forged chair is that all forged elements must be drawn in full size. These drawings will serve as a template for future elements of the chair.

When drawing up a drawing, it must be taken into account that the more metal rocking chair fastening or welding points, the lower its rigidity.

Material selection

The frame of the swing system is made of metal rod, with a diameter of 2 cm. To reduce the total mass of the structure, a steel pipe of the same diameter can be used instead of a rod. Blanks for the frame are cut into the following sizes:

  • 4 rods measuring 64-66 cm - transverse upper and lower rods for the rear and front walls of the chair;
  • 2 rods measuring 25-30 cm - vertical racks of the front wall of the chair;
  • 2 rods measuring 60-65 cm - vertical racks rear wall rocking chairs;
  • 2 rods measuring 85-90 cm - longitudinal upper beams for connecting the front and rear walls;
  • 2 arcs measuring 80-100 cm - support skis.

Made blanks can vary in size, based on the preferences of the owner.

Production of supporting skis

It is easiest to bend an arc under a rocking chair using a pipe bender. If such a device is not available, then you can use any groove that is durable. It can be a vice, standing next to poles or tree trunks. To give curvature, the pipe must be stuck into the groove. To increase the leverage, a rod can be inserted into the pipe and bent to a certain radius.

In the manufacture of skids, it is necessary to achieve maximum coincidence of curvature. Ready-made skids can be equipped on request wooden lining. This will reduce noise, give aesthetics to the whole structure.

Frame assembly

It is better to assemble a metal rocking chair from the sides. To assemble each side, vertical front and rear racks, a longitudinal beam, and a supporting ski are laid on the floor. All elements of the side are welded together. By the same principle, the manufacture of the second side is carried out.

After the sides are ready, they are interconnected by transverse rods by welding.

When conducting welding work it is necessary to maintain an angle of 90 degrees in butt joints. For this, it is recommended to use magnetic square. After welding is completed, all seams must be cleaned.

Painting

Before applying paint, the rocking chair made of metal must be cleaned of dirt and grease. After cleaning metal carcass should be washed with warm soapy water and let dry.

Painting is easier to carry out in warm calm weather, when the structure will be in limbo. The first layer is applied primer paint. After it dries, a second layer is applied. The main paint is applied a day after the entire primer has dried.

Material for sunbed

To make a bed, use a sling of any color. In addition, the bed can be made of typesetting wooden bars according to the principle garden bench. Each of the options has its positive and negative sides.

For the manufacture of a sling, it is recommended to use cotton material with a length of 1.3-1.5 meters and a width of 1.2-1.4 meters. The material is folded in half along the length and sewn together. The finished sleeve is turned inside out, this will hide the connecting seam inside. The edges are wrapped inside and sewn up. The finished sling is laid on the upper transverse and lower transverse posts and fastened with a seam. Before fixing the sling, it is stretched to a comfortable level.

Thematic material:

Wooden blocks for a rocking chair should have a width of about 4 cm. Their installation is carried out in increments equal to the width of the bar. Holes are made for mounting the bars, through which the bars are attached to the base with the help of bolts.

Production of forged elements

A rocking chair made of forged parts can be made independently, but its manufacture is laborious. The rocking chair, cold forged by hand, is different high strength. The material during cold forging not only changes its shape, but also strengthens the structure. This is due to the pressing of the metal during bending and deformation. For execution cold forging use such devices as gnutik, snail, flashlight, wave and twister.

For manufacturing, the forged elements of the rocking chair are drawn in full size. The figure shows all dimensions and elements of forging. Using the available fixtures, it is necessary to make forged parts. During the manufacture of parts from time to time it is necessary to apply to the sketch in order to achieve its exact execution.

The assembly of elements into a single ensemble is carried out by welding, after which the structure is cleaned and painted.

Final adjustment

The principle of adjusting the rocking chair is simple. If the slope is strongly forward, then transverse decorative strips can be installed in the back behind the back of the structure. They can be made of wood or metal. The slats can be used as an independent counterweight, but can also be used as a basis for additional weight.

If the rocking chair falls back strongly, then the counterweight must be installed in front. Alternatively, you can install a footrest, under which to place additional weight.

We looked at the easiest way to make a chair. We learned how to draw up drawings and assemble structural elements, and gained initial work experience. After acquiring a sufficient stock of knowledge and skills, you can proceed to the manufacture of more complex structures, such as a pendulum.

The rocking chair has always been a very convenient item for relaxing in the country or in country house. But not every fan of such a holiday knows that it is possible to make a rocking chair with your own hands if you have certain knowledge, skills and a simple tool. Moreover, the rocking chair is associated not only with country rest. Now there are many models of this type of furniture for apartments and even offices. Manufacturing variations differ from the standard wicker version to the modern armchair in.

Rattan rocking chair

As we said above, the variety of rocking chairs in modern life impressive. For example, a rattan rocking chair has a cozy appearance and will fit perfectly into the interior of your cottage. Rattan is a plant that grows in forests. South America and is also called a flexible liana.

Note!

In terms of strength, it is not much inferior to willow twigs.

Armchairs from this culture are woven without the use of screws and bolts, and all connections are made with glue and skillful knitting. Unfortunately, rattan does not grow and is not sold with us, only in the finished product, so making such a chair with your own hands seems unlikely.

Wicker chair

A very popular look is the wicker rocking chair. common element of any suburban area or even apartments in our latitudes. This chair is woven from willow vines and looks great against the background. garden house, cottages or greenery of your garden. Willow wicker rocking chairs are lightweight and very durable. But such furniture has one small drawback. When it is damp or raining outside, it is advisable to hide such chairs in the house, as they are afraid of excess moisture.

Chair material

Wicker chairs made of rattan and wicker require special skills. Therefore, if we are going to make a rocking chair with our own hands, then the most acceptable option would be wooden. Let's look at what we may need to make it:

  1. with a set of blades.
  2. Sander disk type with coarse and fine-grained nozzles.
  3. with drills.
  4. Roulette and corner with a ruler.
  5. Hammer and.
  6. Brushes, pencil.

Execution of the drawing

Before starting work on making a chair, you need to draw a simple drawing of a plywood rocking chair. An example of such a drawing is shown below.

First of all, it is needed for the precise manufacture of the product and the correct calculation of the required material. Let's put on a metric grid, in increments of 1 cm, a template for the side of the chair. Then, for convenience, we transfer the resulting chair template to plain paper. Then it will be easier for us to transfer the contour of the chair to plywood. Don't be afraid of small inaccuracies. It is important that the sidewalls are identical and that there are no protruding parts in the lower rolling part. corner elements.

Detail cutting

First you need to cut out of plywood, 3 cm thick, three drawers (in other words, a screed) measuring 120 by 800 mm. The sidewalls are cut using an electric jigsaw strictly according to the pattern. Then we take a bar 50 mm wide and 25 mm thick and cut 35 pieces 120 cm long. From these bars we will subsequently make a seat and back.

Consider the amount of waste from the purchased timber. The total length of the beam can be easily calculated before buying, and if, for example, its length is 2.3 m, then it is better to make the width of the chair a little narrower, it will be 115 cm, but do without waste. The dimensions of the rocking chair are not dogma, and if you see that they need to be changed a little to make better use of the material, then you can do it without problems.

Workpiece processing

Applying grinder, it is necessary to process the surfaces of the obtained workpieces and especially their ends. The protruding wood fibers at the ends must be flattened with a hammer, and then treated with hot drying oil. This will protect the ends of your chair from moisture and prolong its life. After drying, you will need to process them again.

Product assembly

Using the drawings of the rocking chair, we begin to assemble the product. We connect with the help of the tsarg two sidewalls. To do this, we mark the places of their fixation. Logically, the best option there will be their installation in the area of \u200b\u200bthe head, in the middle and at the legs.

Note!

The fixing of the tightening strips to the sidewall must be done with the help of a confirmation.

Confirmat is a screw tie for connecting wood materials. Previously, before fastening, we drill holes in the sidewall of 8 mm and in the end of the sidewall of 5 mm.

After that, we proceed to the manufacture and fastening of the seat. To do this, in each bar, we recall that we have as many as 35 pieces, we make four holes, two on each side. And then we attach the bars to the sidewalls. For this frequency of fastenings, a three- or four-mm self-tapping screw can be used as a retainer. Do not forget that in the process of fixing such a number of planks, you need to periodically check the evenness of their installation. A video instruction for assembling a rocking chair is in this article.

Processing the finished assembled chair

Analyzing feedback from amateurs who have been involved in self assembly rocking chairs made of wood and plywood, it can be said that one of the main mistakes after assembly is poor-quality finishing or its absence at all. Therefore, it must be recalled that for the longest possible service of the chair, it is required:

  • holes above the screws.
  • Treat with an antiseptic.
  • Two or three times you need to treat the surface with a waterproof varnish.
  1. Make wooden armchairs best of quality varieties wood. Such material is needles, oak, larch. They have high strength, ductility and moisture resistance. A good option would be to use euro plywood. Armchairs made of such wood will last as long as possible.
  2. Plywood sheets should be selected with good plasticity, for easier subsequent processing.
  3. Mandatory to produce finishing even when using quality wood. This will greatly increase the life of the product.
  4. It is strongly not recommended to sheathe the chair with foam rubber or fabric. The wood under it will rot and rot, which will significantly reduce the life of the product.
  5. Try to keep furniture under a canopy, in a gazebo, or bring it home in wet weather to avoid unnecessary wetting.

Other types

There is another type of wooden chairs for children. The principle of their manufacture is identical to the above option, only when crafting it is necessary to take into account smaller dimensions, a different backrest slope and the presence of handles. A horse is often used as a chair.

Highly original version products - rocking chair for the office. It is covered with leather, and it has a very respectable, solid appearance. On such a chair, during the working day, you can relax and unwind.

High-tech rocking chairs are distinguished by their very original design. Note that the listed furniture is manufactured in a factory way, has complex structure and it's hard to do it yourself.

This chair was made for himself by Vladislav Emelyanov. In my opinion this great example work, when you really want to do something, but there are no drawings, as well as skills in their manufacture. Many are worth learning.

Money was spent on everything about everything:

1500 - bars
1400 - cloth
500 - foam rubber
1000 - sewing covers
600 - fittings, self-tapping screws, bolts

Total: about 5000 rubles.

In the design part, Vladislav was helped by a girl who already had this chair - she threw off photos with dimensions (they were filmed with a sewing meter). Then everything was customized to fit your needs. Here are those pictures for people wanting to replicate.

The process began with gluing bars 20 * 20, because it was not available suitable blanks, which once again speaks of the purposefulness of the author

For this, such homemade clamps were used.

Further, from the end of each bar, cotter pins were hammered into glue for greater strength.

Well, they already sawed the bars themselves. The roundings were drawn with a compass and sawed out with a jigsaw. Then he skinned the whole thing - the most tedious process.

Thus, all the necessary parts were made
We start with the manufacture of supports. We fasten vertical racks to the horizontal parts (self-tapping screws + glue)

We drill niches for connectors in them with a Forstner cutter and grind cylindrical connecting parts for them.

We drive them onto glue into each other, assembling the support frame.

The same design, but from a different angle.

We proceed to the manufacture of the hinged part. This required bolts, washers and ball bearings. With the help of a Forstner cutter of a suitable diameter, the bearings are recessed into the workpiece.

It was necessary to make a secret connection. So that there are no through holes. To do this, I drilled a hole, hammered an M12 nut and screwed a washer on top so that the nut would not fall out

We are preparing the bases for the sidewalls of the hinged module. To do this, we drill blind holes in the rails at an equal distance.

Then they are assembled into solid blocks with glue.

Now we bolt them to the previously assembled base.

Another angle.

We assemble and mount the seat on the base. (Rectangular frame with transverse slats). The bolts are recessed into blind holes into which the cylindrical armrests will then go.
To it we attach the back assembled in a similar way.

The armrests are assembled according to the principle similar to the sidewalls of the hinged part.

We put armrests.

They are fixed furniture bolts to the back, giving additional rigidity.

Cut foam cushions to fit the seat and back. After that, covers were ordered under these pillows.

The chair was then dismantled and repainted. For this, Aquatex, walnut color was used. In two layers.

Once again I will give the rolling unit after painting.

And finally, the finale of the whole work, which took several months after work.

A rocking chair is a very necessary and comfortable thing that helps to relax while relaxing, or, conversely, to concentrate while working. In the furniture market, you can choose this piece of furniture at different taste and in different price ranges.

But there is a more reliable and less expensive option - to make a rocking chair yourself at home. It is important to carefully calculate and measure all the details, because if the exact balance is not observed, the chair will either not move or tip over on its side.

The main types of rocking chairs

Below are photos of rocking chairs of different types.

An excellent option for a private home would be a massage rocking chair - it will not only give your interior modern style, but also has great functionality!

Look at the photo how the massage rocking chair fits beautifully in the interior:

Armchair on skids

The chair is the most popular among users, that is, it has radius skids. Such a rocking chair is distinguished by its simple design and rather simple assembly technique.

The disadvantage of such a chair is that it will not be possible to swing strongly, as it will simply tip over forward or backward.

Armchair with variable curvature

Armchair with variable curvature eliminates tipping over. It is the most comfortable to use and allows almost any landing height.

Armchair on elliptical runners

The chair on elliptical runners is equipped with bumpers to prevent tipping over.

Multifunctional armchair

The multifunctional chair has another name "3 in one". Such a piece of furniture, if necessary, can be turned into a sunbed, but its dimensions are quite overall, so use is available only in relatively large rooms.

Materials for manufacturing

Usually rocking chairs are made of wood, as the metal is too heavy for such a construction. Most often, beginners assemble a plywood rocking chair without violating the following recommendations:

  • the plywood of the middle layer should be much thicker than for the edges;
  • it is necessary to use predominantly waterproof glue, or when using PVA, it is better to fix the parts with small carnations;
  • all connections are treated with glue, securing them with several self-tapping screws on both sides;
  • it is reasonable to protect the surfaces on which the entire mass rests with rubber or strong wooden slats in order to avoid plywood chipping from the load.
  • for more strength finished structure must be treated with a special emulsion or water-based varnish.

Of the tools useful electric jigsaw, screwdriver, drill and hammer.

A forged rocking chair, of course, can only be made by a specialist, since special equipment and premises are required.

Of course, it is possible to make such a chair by welding metal profile pipes that resemble wicker rocking chairs. But this option is more suitable for the garden street area.

Also in the garden you can place a lounger with an awning (like a swing), which is a little more difficult to make, but it will be a lot of fun to use!

For home comfort and comfort, it will be more aesthetic to use a tree, decorating it braided rods from rattan.

Easily arranged and baby rocking chair, but its proportions will differ from the adult version. Making it yourself is not at all difficult even for a beginner.

Important steps and rules of work

Before you make a rocking chair with your own hands, you need a competent drawing! Most often, self-taught masters find ready-made drawings of a rocking chair on the Internet, but it is worth considering the mass of the largest person who will use it in order to avoid misunderstandings in the future.

Note!

And then, on occasion, it will be possible to put a pillow on the seat, for greater comfort and avoid sharp rocking.

Beginning masters may not immediately succeed perfect option, even if all dimensions of the rocking chair are respected. This can easily be corrected by balancing the product.

The rear overhang can be made heavier by simply joining the rear ends of the skids with a stick in a "U" shape. So the rocking chair will be easier to go and "not shove" when rocking.

When tilting the chair back, accordingly, it is necessary to attach the weights to the front overhang.

Required pads for chair rails

On the runners of the rocking chair, it is imperative to install pads that prolong its durability and make the furniture wear-resistant.

  • you need to turn the chair upside down;
  • bar the right sizes heat up quite strongly with a special hairdryer;
  • then gently press the hot blank to the skid and wrap it with a dense braid;
  • we repeat a similar action with an adjacent skid;
  • after waiting for the final cooling of the blanks, we glue them with waterproof glue;
  • we fix the lining with small carnations along the entire length;
  • after a maximum of three days, when the glue is completely dry, temporary fasteners can be removed. Then finally fix the ends with self-tapping screws;
  • the heads of the self-tapping screws must be carefully rubbed with a putty prepared from sawdust of the same material (wood), mixing them with glue.
