How to fill a decorative pillow made by yourself

When you make pillows yourself, you not only decide how they look on the outside, but also choose the filling for them. There are many options for you to choose from. Below is a description of how you can fill a decorative pillow for decorating a room.

These photos show the options for filling do-it-yourself decorative pillows:

Goose down or feather.

goose down is perhaps the first (and still the most luxurious) pillow filler. It is valued for its elasticity and comfort. Because it is expensive, it is often mixed with (or even replaced with) feather. Feather is not as warm as down, but this quality is more appreciated in duvets than in pillows.

However, a feather, especially a rough and large one, tends to crawl out through the fabric. Feathers pop out between the threads of the fabric or along the seams. Besides the fact that such feathers create some sloppiness, they can prick unpleasantly with their sharp tips. Another disadvantage is that many people are allergic to feathers.

Fiberfill.

Fibrous filling, which consists of polyester fibers made like a feather, is the most practical option for home craftsmen. It is inexpensive, does not cause allergies and has a very pleasant and comfortable flexibility and resilience.

You can purchase pre-quilted cushion fiber in all basic shapes, or you can buy the fiber raw by weight and then cut it into the cushion shape you like.

Foam filler.

Polyurethane foam is the basis for several basic types of pillows. All these forms are easy to wash and dry. There are several options:

Foam blocks: filling suitable for seat cushions. Since such blocks are resilient, they are comfortable to sit on and always return to their original position. original form and therefore have a good appearance when not in use. Before stuffing a decorative pillow made by oneself with foam blocks, they can be cut, giving the most intricate curves and angles.

Foam pieces: they can be used to fill pre-quilted, inexpensive pillowcases. However, due to the fact that the pieces of foam rubber are very springy, they are usually too elastic, which is not convenient. This type of filling also tends to have a lumpy appearance even when covered with a thick cloth.

Foam sheets: pre-formed and stitched, foam sheets give a much more attractive appearance than foam rubber pieces. However, these sheets are also distinguished by great elasticity, which is why they react to touch like a springboard. In fact, the muscles of the neck have to work hard to adapt to such foam rubber, and therefore some people feel tired after sleeping on such a pillow at night.

Sewing decorative pillows with a hidden seam with your own hands

Simple decorative pillows are two panels sewn together and then stuffed to shape with filler. This type of pillow is thicker in the center and flatter at the edges. Most decorative pillows, all bed cushions, and some types of chair cushions are so-called sharp-edged cushions.

Beautiful handmade decorative pillows can be square, rectangular, round or curly. The fabric you choose also has a wide range of decorative possibilities. You can make the top and bottom of the pillow in the same fabric, or in contrasting materials, or add your own. decorative ornaments. This article talks about several options for choosing fabric and making a decorative pillow.

The easiest technique in terms of tailoring is to make decorative pillows with your own hands, closing the unsewn place. blind seam, and it is this closing method that is used in most instructions.

However, this type of closure also has its drawbacks. If the pillow needs cleaning, then you must either wash it or dry clean it entirely, or you can remove the cover from it and clean everything separately, then put the filling back into the cover and close the cover with a blind seam.

This manufacturing method is used for decorative pillows filled with fibers that can be washed or for items that rarely need to be cleaned. However, if proper care is your top priority, then you might want to consider one of the following. alternative methods closing the opening: sew in a zipper or a strip with hook and eye fasteners, or make an opening in the form of an envelope. All this is suitable for decorative pillows.

Below you will learn how to sew a decorative pillow with a zipper.

How you can beautifully arrange a decorative pillow with your own hands (with photo)

You can personalize any pillow by shaping its edges. Cord, pleats, factory ruffles, wavy and gathers, used singly or in combinations to match the color or contrasting colors- all this is just a small part of the decorative options.

When making decorative pillows with your own hands on products with a sharp edge or on modern thick pillow boxes, the edge is sewn along the seam line on right side front section before assembling the pillowcase. On ready-made thick pillow boxes, such a finish is sewn along the front edge and edge reverse side before attaching the strip.

To determine the amount of trim: for square or rectangular pillows with a sharp edge: take the length and width of the pillow shape as a base, multiply it by 2, and then add 2.5 cm to the joint.

For square or rectangular modern thick pillows: count in the same way as for pillows with a sharp edge.

And how to arrange round decorative pillows with a sharp edge? To do this, take a flexible measuring tape to measure the circumference of the pillow shape, then add 2.5 cm to the joint.

For round thick pillows: count as for pillows with a sharp edge.

For ready-made thick pillows: calculate as for pillows with a sharp edge, and then multiply by 2.

There are many different types cushion finishes that you can do yourself. Below are some of the more popular ones.

Cord.

Used as the only finish, it will give any base pillow a professional, finished look. Cord can also be used in combination with gathered trims and finished ruffles. Baste the cord in place first, then sew a ruffle or frill over the cord.

Wavy braid.

Large wavy tape gives the main type of pillow a smart rural look. For added effect, weave or layer two colors of braid. To sew such a braid, center it over the seam line and bast in place. When the pillow is finished, the braid gives the edges a scalloped look.

Fringe.

A short dense fringe of the "caterpillar" type gives the product an elegant look. Long fringes or fringes with silver or gold threads are often made from shiny fibers such as rayon or silk and give a more formal look.

Frill.

To give your pillows softness, consider purchasing a ready-made, pre-assembled frill, or make your own frill that matches or contrasts in color with the fabric.

If you want the bedroom to look feminine, then sew two or three layers of frills with increasing width along the edges of the pillows.

Trim the edges with narrow, contrasting trim or a narrow, round hem and contrasting decorative thread to add drama to the frills.

Other trims, such as tight lace or ribbon stripes, can be paired with a homemade frill. Sew on this trim before gathering and basting the frill to the top of the pillow.

Home is a place where you need to return with pleasure. To do this, we equip it to our liking, create our own small world. Décor is an integral part of a comfortable home, and even more fun is the decorations created by with my own hands. Today we will look at .

It's about a simple sofa cushion square shape. In addition to the pillow itself stuffed with holofiber, we will show in detail how sew a pillowcase.

For the inside of the pillow, we need:

  • fabric rectangle 45x70 cm;
  • holofiber stuffing - 0.5 kg.

For the pillowcase, prepare:

  • leatherette - 47x47 cm;
  • upholstery fabric for sofas, red - 47x47 cm;
  • plastic snake, more than 50 cm long.

To be honest, this pillow was assembled from materials that lay in the "what's left" basket. Those. I didn’t pick up fabric on purpose, but sewed from what I already had, and what I wanted to realize at least into something, so in the process of sewing I ran into some difficulties that I had to solve on the go.

How to sew a pillow

So, the inside of the pillow. We take a rectangle of fabric 45x70 cm and fold it in half, thereby allowing ourselves not to sew one side. From one edge, we sew two halves, stepping back from the fold 1/3 of the length. We sew to this very fold. Then, stepping back from the 2/3 fold, we sew the entire pillow along the contour. Thus, we leave ourselves a hole for stuffing. I like it when my fist passes freely into the opening of the bag, with the expectation that the filler will be clamped in it. Pushing stuffing through a small hole is a dubious pleasure.

As for stuffing - I tried different variants. The most frequent, which, unfortunately, the majority uses is stuffing with padding polyester. I don't like it for two reasons:

- a synthetic winterizer soars (although this is not critical for a sofa cushion);

- he's sagging. Those. after a while, the pillow will lose its elastic appearance and become more like a bedding. Even stuffing with a “pyramid” does not help (folding layers of synthetic winterizer different size on top of each other from largest to smallest to the center and from smallest to largest to the top)

Therefore, I prefer holofiber. It is a pellet of approximately the same size, does not crumble, even if they are thrown, which shows good communication between the inner fibers. At the same time, each spool is easy to separate from its neighbor, which allows you to adjust the amount of stuffing. We can buy by weight any required amount or order on a specialized website.

The fabric for the inner pillow came across to me frankly bad, it was very fraying around the edges. I had to sew it in three stages:

- straight line along the contour;

- zigzag over a straight stitch;

- overlock the edge.

There were attempts to overlock the edges of the fabric separately, but they fell along with the overlock threads. On two layers of fabric, everything kept perfectly. Therefore, it turns out that the edges of the fabric in the place of the hole are not overlocked. Be careful with them.

After we have a bag on our hands, we turn it inside out and start stuffing it, after straightening the corners from the inside.

After you have reached the desired density in the stuffing, we sew up the hole by hand.

The inner pillow is ready.

How to sew a pillowcase

We will sew a pillowcase from two squares and a snake. The red fabric is overlocked at the edges, the leatherette square is not.

The snake can be of any length, the main thing is longer side square. I had one meter-long snake with two dogs, which I divided into two.

We sew the snake to one square, putting them face to face. We sew the snake with a one-sided foot. Take care of your fingers!

Then, in the same way, we sew the second square, we get a snake between the two edges of the pillowcase.

We begin to sew up the contours of the pillowcase. I started from one corner and went to the snake. Having separated the two sides of the snake as in the photo, we wrap it, as it were, inside. If you do not open the snake, you will get a dog outside and you will have to rip it apart, there are no other options.

Sew slowly and carefully. Wear construction or other protective goggles, especially if you have a metal snake. A piece of needle flying off in the face is a dangerous business.

We repeat the same on the other side. We also fold the snake.

Sew up the bottom of the pillowcase.

We twist, measure the already finished and stuffed pillow. She shouldn't walk around in a pillowcase. The sofa cushion is usually rigid, there is no room for unfilled corners in it. If the pillowcase turned out to be larger - we turn it inside out, measure how much it needs to be taken in, mark with chalk. Remove the pillowcase from the pillow and sew, evenly on each side

We measure again after straightening the corners. To better stretch the corners, it is best to use a large, hard needle.

Our pillow is ready.

Search the internet for design ideas sofa cushions. They don't have to be all identical, even on the same couch.

This is what our pillow looks like from the leatherette side:

How to choose the right fabric?

Before you sew a pillow on a sofa with your own hands, you need to worry about the basis of needlework, namely the fabric. It can be either the simplest and cheapest, or it can be expensive textile samples. Beginners should start with more simple options so as not to accidentally spoil expensive material.

The fabric must be of high quality and dense, so as not to lose its shape and appearance during processing. Chintz, linen or felt is best suited. When it comes to products for the little ones, try to choose materials that do not cause allergic reactions.

To save money, you can use old pieces and flaps that are stale at home, or use old household items instead of the base - sweaters, jeans or voluminous pullovers. Knitted pillows can also be made from old woolen products that are no longer in use. The main thing when using old materials is new and original decor, which will hide certain imperfections.

How to fill the product?

Do-it-yourself sofa pillows should have ideal fillers. They will be able to keep the shape and size of the product longer, and will also be pleasant to use such a decorative pillow. It is worth immediately eliminating cotton wool or old worn-out fabric items. They tend to bunch up into corners, creating hard clumps that are completely unsuitable for lounging or sleeping with this product.

To realize the idea of decorating decorative furniture, it will take little time, money, the main thing is fantasy.

Why are they needed?

You can arrange decorative pillows on sofas, armchairs, ottomans, in any room, especially a nursery, in a hall. Why do some choose not to buy? finished models but how about making them yourself? First, create original version, made with love, can only be done by hand. Secondly, it is cheaper to remake the old unnecessary thing or create it yourself from improvised materials.

Decorative furniture will good option gift for relatives, friends. The main rule is that they should fit the design of the room in which they will be located. Therefore, to make it easy for yourself, when preparing a gift, you must first find out the design of the room for which they will be intended.

Schemes, patterns

The first thing to do is create a pattern. Only experienced professionals can engage in tailoring any products “by eye”. And then far from always the result of such a negligent attitude will be an even, neat thing. It is convenient to use the pattern - it is enough to calculate the measurements on paper in order to avoid mistakes.

Thanks to the modeling of the pattern, it will be possible to facilitate the sewing process. It will also be possible to create as many identical products as you like according to the same scheme.

Creating a pattern takes place in several stages:

  • We determine the size, draw a square, a rectangle on paper, add 1.5 cm on each side.
  • We transfer the pattern to double fabric, sew, leaving a small opening for stuffing, turn inside out.
  • We are making a pillowcase. We make a second pattern, which differs from the first in size - each side should be a couple of centimeters larger.

If you have experience in creating similar products, it is not necessary to be limited to square or rectangular shape. It is better to start with it for beginners. You can create more interesting patterns:

  • owl;
  • "boa constrictor" - under the head;
  • elephant, etc.

To fulfill any of your ideas, you just need to draw them on paper, then transfer them to the fabric. Nevertheless, in most cases, when they are intended for decorating a hall, living room, it is better to choose classic options. They will be rectangular, square in shape.

Master classes. How to sew?

The easiest way is to take a finished thing, decorate it, making it suitable for the design of the room. Some needlewomen decide to create everything with their own hands, for this it is not enough to create a pattern. It is necessary to pay attention to such moments as the choice of fabric, stuffing, threads. It is necessary to proceed to the solution of decoration issues only after a successful attempt to sew it.

Textile

When deciding which fabric to choose, it is necessary to consider not only the availability of the material, but also its suitability for the chosen style. Texture, colors should be suitable, complement overall design premises.

The most commonly used materials are:

  • cotton;
  • sackcloth;
  • velours;
  • fleece;
  • jeans;
  • atlas;

Advice

As for the use of fur, it can use both artificial and natural. However, for children's rooms, people with allergies, artificial can be harmful.

In some cases, several types of fabrics may be used, however, it is important to ensure that they are compatible. Otherwise, they will not be easy to sew, ready product it will turn out sloppy, it will be difficult to decorate it. Experienced seamstresses adhere to the following rules:

  • The selected fabric may not match the upholstery of the sofa, other furniture, which will complement the product. It is in itself a design decision, the peculiarity of which can be emphasized.
  • The color of the fabric may also differ from the shade of the furniture, but they must be combined with each other. If the sofa is brown suitable color additional elements will be orange, yellow, beige.
  • If there is a pattern on the fabric, it should not be too sticky. A bright, multi-colored pattern becomes a separate design element. In this case, further decoration different techniques inappropriate.
  • It is necessary to pay attention to the rules for the care of the selected material. Sooner or later it will have to be washed, especially if it is made in light colors. How easier material the easier it will be to take care of it.
  • When choosing a fabric, it is important to think over the stuffing of the product in advance. If hard feathers are to be used for it, the material must be strong enough to hold them.

Over time, all living creatures start up in natural stuffings, especially if the products are not given to dry cleaning, they are not provided with proper care. The result may be that a person will have an allergy, even if he is just in a room, no one sleeps on it.

If you want to stuff from natural material, be sure to use a new one. Do not forget to provide him with the necessary care.

Plant stuffing has a short service life, because the plants need to be replaced. Often used:

  • medicinal herbs;
  • bamboo;
  • hop cones.

It is believed that such material is very beneficial for health. It is important to consider that if medicinal properties really present, but not for long. In this case, a small amount of moisture will be enough to form rot.

Synthetic materials have the least disadvantages, which is why many people choose them. The most commonly used synthetic winterizer, foam rubber, holofiber. These stuffing materials are affordable, budget-friendly, and do not cause allergies. If it is not possible to purchase such materials, you can use those that you have at home:

  • cotton wool;
  • silicone balls.

Threads

When choosing threads, two important factors must be considered: they must be High Quality so that the product does not burst at the seams. Also, they should be combined with the selected fabric. The main rules are:

  • The threads should match the fabric in color. The more suitable the shade is chosen, the less attention will attract applied seams.
  • If it is not possible to use a precisely matched shade, you must choose a few tones darker. When the thread is lighter than the fabric, unnecessary attention is focused on it.
  • The threads must match the width of the fabric. Too thin will not be able to firmly fasten the matter, too thick will simply break it. Those used for decoration should also fit in width so that the embroidery or other pattern looks neat.
  • If a machine will be used when sewing a product, the thread must be selected the right needle. In addition, the top and bottom threads must be the same.

The most common type of thread suitable for sewing many products is cotton, especially combined with natural fabrics: linen, cotton. Depending on the material, polyester, viscose, silk, woolen threads can also be used.

Step-by-step instruction

After choosing the fabric, stuffing and threads, you can proceed to sewing. The easiest way is to use a machine. But if this is not possible, you can do it manually neat seams, nothing worse. If you make a product with your own hands, you will need the following tools:

  • scissors;
  • ruler;
  • marker or chalk (depending on the density of the selected fabric);
  • needle.

Step-by-step instruction

  • We turn the fabric inside out, fold it in half, measure the estimated length, width. Then we draw straight lines under the ruler with a marker or chalk.
  • We cut out rectangles or squares along the drawn lines; for convenience, you can chop off the fabric folded in half with basting needles. We apply them to each other "face to face" - if there are any irregularities, we level them.
  • We sew three sides completely, and the fourth - half, through which the stuffing will be inserted. It is necessary to sew with a regular line seam, not different from a machine one. The smaller the stitches, the neater the finished product will look.
  • We turn the sewn cover inside out, stuff it through the side left not sewn to the end, carefully sew it together.
  • The product is ready for further decoration.
