Design of old cabinets. How to paint an old lacquered cabinet: preparing, aging the surface, painting and protecting the surface

Good day to all!

Before moving on to the main topic, I want to introduce you a little. This is my daughter’s apartment and I decided to put the hallway in order myself. At first, the walls were covered with wallpaper and the ceiling too. A new insulated linoleum was laid on the floor and screwed floor plinths. Initially it was like this.

and it became like this...

I bought just such a ceiling rosette, painted it with mother-of-pearl and varnish ...

I glued it to the ceiling, led the electric wire through the hole, hung the chandelier

And now about the essence of my publication.

I will share the "masterpiece", as my relatives called it ...

The old chiffonier looked like this before restoration...

I removed the doors on the mezzanine and on the wardrobe part of the wardrobe. I set the mezzanine level in the hallway, placed it under it and screwed the legs in the form of polished and painted bars. The mezzanine will now serve as a shoe cabinet. I put it on the mezzanine wardrobe...

Fortunately, the world is not without good people ... the neighbors gave me old furniture to throw away and I put it to work.

I sawed out additional shelves and partitions with an electric jigsaw.

When all the shelves were ready, I pasted them with self-adhesive tape (but it would be better to paint them in White color)

The entire chiffonier was painted white acrylic paint three times with drying, then with acrylic varnish, as usual ... The cut edges were sanded, primed, sanded again and covered with white paint.

I decided to fill the upper left edge at the door itself with an additional mezzanine. I measured all the dimensions, sawed out the necessary details from the gift leftover furniture, assembled the mezzanine, painted it white ...

I added a vintage decoupage "Rose" and varnished it. After drying, with the help of my daughter, I hung a mezzanine in its place. This time, the doors dried up after painting, and I cut out figures for them and screwed in new handles. I added magnets to the doors for a snug fit.

Do the same with the rest of the doors. I painted the details under gilding and attached them to their places on small carnations without hats and additionally on glue.

And that's what I got ... you be the judge. On the shelves you see some of my work: drawers for small items (at the very top), further, lower - a bottle of "Summer Option", bottle design with tights ... "Charm". On the ceiling is a chandelier design.

As an example, we will tell you in detail how to update old polished furniture with your own hands, namely, an old wardrobe that has long settled in the country.

Three-leaf wardrobe with drawers and a mirror

Throwing away a strong, conscientiously assembled piece of furniture does not make sense, besides, there are many techniques with which it is easy to restore its beauty and youth. The idea belongs to Maria Talmacheva.

Finding the right model

Craftsmen and craftswomen who are happy owners old furniture, the easiest way - they already have the main object for implementation creative ideas. What about those who live surrounded by new cabinets and cupboards that they don't want to say goodbye to? There are several options:

  • ask if friends and acquaintances have a wardrobe “to throw away” and, with a positive answer, help them get rid of junk;
  • buy old unnecessary furniture on one of the many sites (for example, on Avito) at a symbolic price;
  • still take a chance and redo the current model, which is not very old, but has already served for 10-15 years.

And do not forget to think about where the new "resident" of your apartment or house will be installed.

Choosing a decoration method

To make the design look fresh and extraordinary, you should choose one of the popular techniques, in this case, decoupage to update the facade of the cabinet. You will need thin napkins with an original pattern or ornament. Perhaps it will be pink peonies or birds of paradise, in any case, the facade will become unrecognizable after finishing. We will show you how to restore an old wardrobe with your own hands using paper napkins with a beautiful pattern, which is dominated by a strict blue color.

Napkins are matched to the tone of the handles

Tip for beginners: wipes can be purchased at a hardware store or a special department of a supermarket that sells hand-made products.

We remember the nuances of technology

To refresh your skills, you can practice in the design inner sides cabinet or drawers. The exercises are especially useful for those who first encountered the decoupage technique. The main thing is to observe all the stages of work and their sequence.

For interior decoration, the choice fell on a bright finish.

For training, you can choose other elements of the interior, for example, old stool or a chair. Decorative wall decorations made of wood or plastic are also suitable.

We prepare tools and materials

The advantage of decoupage is that it does not require expensive or hard-to-find materials. Some of the items you will find at home, the rest you can buy in the supermarket at a low price. The most expensive purchase is the purchase of paintwork materials, but for registration small closet you can use leftover paint from a previous repair. A small photo gallery of necessary things:

paper napkins with beautiful pattern

A set of paint brushes - wide and narrow

paint roller with a tray for squeezing excess paint

PVA glue for paper or construction works

Acrylic paints in your favorite colors

In addition to the listed items and materials, you will need:

  • transparent fixing varnish;
  • paraffin (an ordinary white candle will do);
  • sandpaper (with a minimum grit);
  • primer for preparing the base for pasting and painting;
  • spray bottle filled with clean water;
  • painting paper tape or tape.

If you want to decoupage furniture with your own hands using fabric or wallpaper, use appropriate materials instead of napkins.

We clean the surface and prime the base

Cleaning should be done with a grinder or by hand using fine-grained sandpaper. Gently grind all outer surfaces. To remove polishing, it is better to use a power tool, otherwise the process will be delayed. When you achieve perfect smoothness and uniformity of the surface, you need to apply a primer layer. If you follow the instructions and know exactly the moment of drying, then you can allocate your free time to good use.

Try to remember all the stages of work, because the skills of decorating old furniture with your own hands can come in handy in the future.

We apply 1 coat of paint and cover with paraffin

As soon as the primer is completely dry, proceed to painting the facade and walls. First, choose a background shade and apply it. In the future, it is possible to add stripes, figures, borders of a different color. Places not to be stained are closed masking tape. In the photo - a cabinet painted in 1 layer:

Main color - lilac of moderate intensity

Acrylic paint dries quickly, so after 20-25 minutes we start rubbing the surfaces with paraffin. We affect only those surfaces that we plan to age.

A candle is a great tool for creating a layer of paraffin

Areas covered with paraffin are easy to style, make them more colorful. The next layer of paint comes off them perfectly, as a result of which the worn places seem aged. In our case, a lilac background or woody texture will be visible on the treated areas.

Apply 2 coats of paint

Having waxed some places, we proceed to re-staining. Mandatory condition: the second coat of paint should be lighter by 1-2 tones.

To maintain clear boundaries of the painted areas, do not forget to use masking tape

For painting small details, use a narrow brush

The transverse elements and the middle of the doors can be painted in a different color - blue, gray or turquoise.

A few bright touches won't hurt

Having made the last smear, we wait for complete drying.

We decorate using decoupage technique

For clearance end parts and the front side of the boxes we apply decoupage. The process of fixing the napkin on a vertical surface is very simple. First, we apply a piece of a napkin (or all) to the end of the cabinet, evenly moisten it with water from a spray bottle, then take a brush and carefully smooth the napkin, trying not to damage the edges.

Flattening the napkin is one of the milestones decoupage

Wetting helps the paper piece align

Having achieved perfect smoothness, we apply a layer of PVA glue on top of the napkin, it dries in about 20-30 minutes. Places covered with masking tape, paint in a different color.

Aging and varnishing

It remains to age the pre-selected places, in this case, these are the corners and cross rails. We take fine sandpaper and remove it with light movements upper layer paints. Under it, the bottom layer should appear, painted in more bright color.

The photo clearly shows the aged places

We paint the inside of the cabinet in one color

The finishing touch is the application of varnish. For strength, we recommend applying protection 2-3 times, each time waiting for complete drying.

Installing new hardware

The chiffonier is ready, it remains to install the fittings - the design of the castle part and decorative handles. If the store did not find fittings suitable in style or color, ordinary silver or gold details will do.

The handle is decorated in the style of finishing

Don't forget drawer handles

After spending just a few hours, instead of an old boring closet, we got new item furniture, stylish and unique.

Decor options

  • Photo printing or wallpaper.
  • Color stained glass film and vinyl stickers.
  • Glass or mirror matting.
  • Vinyl or regular wallpaper.
  • Decorative plaster (stenciling).
  • Restoration and painting.

Photo printing or photo wallpaper

This technique is most often used to decorate wardrobe doors. Large-format printing has long been used in interior design. A special printer prints a pattern on paper or any other surface. The inconvenience is that this is an expensive service and you need to look for a special photo printing workshop. Photo printing on glass is called skinal.

There are more a budget option- This is a wallpaper. Sold in construction or online stores. The cost is 300 rubles. and above, depending on the size. The theme of photo wallpaper is the most diverse, from landscapes, flowers, animals, to fairy-tale characters for a children's closet. Use starch-based glue when sticking, so you can later remove the old pattern and change it to another one.

The video shows how to properly place photo printing on glass:

Stained glass film and vinyl stickers

This is something that you can quickly, without special skills, stick with your own hands on the surface or glass of a cabinet and wardrobe. Add a touch of class to your closet. Stained glass films are at the peak of fashion today. They can be bought both in online stores and in specialized repair hypermarkets.

Except beautiful decor, the film protects the wardrobe and just the wardrobe from damage. Stickers and film are removed very easily.

Glass or mirror matting

It is used for glass and mirror facades of cabinets. More suitable for closet. Industrial matting involves removing the top layer of a mirror or glass. It turns out several levels and a three-dimensional image.

Do-it-yourself matting of glasses or mirrors can be done with a special paste. To work, you will need a stencil and a rubber spatula. We put the stencil on the surface, apply the paste on it with a spatula. Leave for a while, according to the instructions. When using a paste with an abrasive, it is necessary to rub along the lines with glass for about an hour. Wash off the rest of the paste with water.

On the video master class on matting:

Vinyl or plain wallpaper

You can update your wardrobe with your own hands using wallpaper. This cabinet decor is only suitable for old wood or " Soviet furniture". But this is solid, solid furniture, it can still serve and please us. For decoration, simple ones are more suitable. paper wallpaper, as they are easier to smear with glue and stick. And for the price, simple wallpapers are cheaper and lighter than vinyl ones. At simple wallpaper there are two disadvantages: they are not durable and the pattern is usually not interesting.

Vinyl wallpapers come in paper or non-woven backing. They are heavier than simple, vinyl with paper base stick better with glue based on starch, and with non-woven - Methylan Vinyl glue.

Before sticking wallpaper, be sure to degrease the surface. This can be done with alcohol, gasoline, or acetone.

Do not forget to press more tightly with a dry rag or sponge and straighten the wallpaper so that the paper does not go in waves.

Decorative plaster master class

This technique, with which we will decorate the cabinet, is called stencilling. With help decorative plaster and a stencil, we get voluminous decorative elements. They can be subsequently painted in any color, gilded or tinted to your taste.

For work you will need:

  1. Stencil made of plastic or vinyl, can be made of cardboard.
  2. Decorative plaster.
  3. Flat spatula.
  4. Scotch tape.
  5. Old closet.
  6. Acrylic paint.
  7. Sandpaper.

If the product that we will decorate is covered with old paint, it is necessary to process the entire surface sandpaper. We process until it becomes visible wooden base. If your old cabinet is not painted, then everything is simpler: remove the top layer with sandpaper, remove dirt and old fat. If you see cracks in the wood, it is advisable to cover them with putty. We take our ready-made or made of cardboard stencil and attach it to the surface of the cabinet door with masking tape.

Then we let the plaster dry, go through the sandpaper and cover the entire cabinet with acrylic paint in several layers. Acrylic will not only decorate the cabinet, but also save it from destruction. Between painting, give the cabinet time to dry. At the end of the work, the surface is varnished on top.

On the video work with decorative plaster:

Cabinet decor master class

In our master class, we are updating an old Soviet-era wall. See how the wardrobe will change after such a decor.

For work you will need:

  1. Old closet.
  2. Acrylic enamel paint.
  3. Acrylic varnish.
  4. PVA glue
  5. Paint brush and roller.
  6. Sandpaper large and small.
  7. Paper wallpapers.
  8. Gold paint.
  9. New fittings.

We dismantle the old cabinet, pull out the drawers. We take grinder or sandpaper and process the surface of the parts. If you process with sandpaper, then do it first with a large emery, and at the end go through with a fine one.

We apply acrylic paint first in the corners with a brush or sponge, and then over the entire surface with a roller. You need to paint 3-4 times until it disappears dark color. Next, decorate the boxes: paint with a brush and white acrylic front sides boxes. We are waiting for it to dry. Next, stick painter's tape to finish decorative element gold paint.

We paint the decorative element with gold paint. We paint over all the boxes with white acrylic paint, dry it. We take off the tape. Next, we move on to wallpapering. Wallpaper is the most simple, paper. Cut into strips, spread with PVA glue and carefully glue. Make sure that the wallpaper sticks tightly, press them with a sponge.

It happens that old furnishings become so morally expensive that it is not realistic to send them to the scrap. It is this situation that often develops around old wardrobes, originating from the “polished” Soviet Union.

Repairs were made, the design of the room was changed, new generations were growing up ... But no one ever raised a hand on an old polished cabinet, at least until that time. We offer several options on how you can update the usual furniture for storing clothes.

  3. After that, all treated surfaces must be covered with a stain of the desired shade.
  4. The application of several layers of dye allows you to achieve uniform staining. The last layer of stain must be dried for a couple of days, with room temperature. And only after this period of time, you can apply the first layer acrylic lacquer based on water.
  5. Lacquer is applied using a specific brush with natural and hard bristles. Strokes should be done only from top to bottom.
  6. Decorating the cabinet is possible only after the final varnish layer has completely dried. For this stage, it is worth stocking up with self-adhesive furniture edging that imitates “gold”. They need to decorate the central sash of the cabinet, its side walls and the necessary parts of the entire facade.

Well, the easiest and fastest option for how and with what to decorate an old wardrobe is to attach mirror paintings.

From time to time we have to decide the fate of old furniture - cabinets, wardrobes that do not fit into new interior. If throwing away the hand does not rise, then right decision there will be a do-it-yourself cabinet restoration. Of course, reanimating Chinese headsets made of plastic and pressed sawdust will cost more. But if the furniture is of good Soviet quality, made by real craftsmen, then we simply have to give it a second life. Consider three ways to update old cabinets.

Consider three ways to update old cabinets

Updating old furniture is a creative business. First of all, you need to think about how to tie the future cabinet design to the existing interior: choose the right shade of paint and fittings suitable for the occasion.

Art Deco hallway cabinet restoration

What tools do we need

  • Sander or sandpaper varying degrees grit.
  • Screwdriver, screwdrivers.
  • Putty knife.
  • Paint roller (or wide flute).
  • Small brush.
  • Self-tapping screws and carpentry glue if the connections are loose.

List of materials for work

  1. Primer composition.
  2. Wood putty.
  3. Automotive enamel in cans, black and metallic.
  4. Masking tape (or mounting tape).
  5. Mirror glass in size.

Restoring an old closet

Considering the question of how to restore the cabinet, we subject it to a detailed inspection. If necessary, we strengthen the loose hinges, replacing the ancient nails with self-tapping screws. By installing new fasteners, we additionally strengthen the connection good glue. We remove rust with a special solution.

We clean off the old varnish coating using sandpaper or a grinder. Woodworm traces may be found in the tree. In this case, the walls must be wiped with a special antiseptic.

We clean the old varnish with sandpaper

Now we inspect the cabinet for damage. Defects can be of varying degrees of complexity.

cabinet painting process

Having dealt with the damage, we prepare the surface for painting. How to update the closet beyond recognition? First, we clean the putty places with sandpaper and apply several layers of soil, then the aerosol will lie flat.

We paint the cabinet first in the main color (metallic). Then we delimit with masking tape the parts intended for painting in black, so as not to touch the already finished surface. We apply a black tone. The contrast is very impressive.

We paint the cabinet

In the cabinet doors we insert tinted mirror glass. This method of restoration will help visually expand the room, give the old furniture a completely different look.

Insert tinted mirror glass

We fasten new fittings, selected taking into account the shade of the surface. An art deco wardrobe will decorate the most presentable hallway.

Fitting new hardware

Renovation of old kitchen cabinets

Kitchen furniture is under enormous stress. Changes in temperature and humidity, steam, splashes of grease, soot from gas burners- all this is not in the best way affects its surface. But if the cabinets are made of quality wood, they can not only be updated, but given an expensive and stylish look.
How to decorate a closet with your own hands, without significant financial investments? To do this, there is an interesting technique for decorating furniture with craquelure varnish. The method of restoration does not require high costs but absolutely transforms the furniture. The point here is that when the varnish dries, it forms peculiar cracks, creating the full effect of antiques.

An example of using craquelure

Tools and materials for decorating with single-phase varnish

  • Primer or PVA glue.
  • Acrylic paint in two different shades.
  • Single-component craquelure varnish.
  • Matte acrylic lacquer.
  • Wide brush.
  • High-quality varnish for craquelure should be liquid. The viscous composition is poorly applied, the coating after drying looks uneven.
  • You can not shake the varnish before applying - the bubbles will ruin the whole thing.
  • Try the technique on a different surface first to get a feel for the decor.
  • The room should be warm and dry. It is also necessary to do wet cleaning so that dust and small debris do not sit on the drying varnish.

Stages of work on single-phase craquelure

Leveling and embedding possible defects we carry out wood in the same way as in the first case. We prime the surface 2-3 times and dry it.

We apply the paint of the main color (usually darker), which will later appear through the cracks. The layer must dry completely.

Quickly and evenly cover the surface with craquelure varnish. The thicker the layer, the larger the cracks will be. We dry the varnish to such an extent that it sticks to the fingers, but does not stain them.

At the end of the process, we apply acrylic varnish on top.

We paint metal fittings in bronze or gold. Now everyone admits that we managed to update the cabinet with our own hands to a level corresponding to the royal kitchen.

If the furniture has an elegant pattern that you don’t want to paint over, we use a two-phase craquelure.

Application of two-phase craquelure

For work we need:

  • Two-component craquelure varnish. The first composition is used for the effect of aging of the surface, the second - for the formation of cracks. For maximum results, you should use a varnish with a patina effect (turbidity, darkening). Clear varnish will not affect the color of the pattern.
  • Bitumen, pastel or gold powder, Oil paint for grouting.
  • Acrylic lacquer.
  • Several small brushes.
  • Sponge.

We cover the prepared surface with the first, patinating layer of varnish. If there is no drawing, it can be created using the decoupage method. We dry the composition, as in the first case, until it sticks.

Quickly apply the second phase of varnish. Dry to the same state.

We process the cracks that have appeared with a prepared grout using a sponge. Gold powder will ennoble the patterns of cracks, give the locker a presentable look.

We fix the result with a layer of acrylic varnish. The locker has turned from an old and time-beaten box into a real work of craquelure art.

Decoupage of an old cabinet

The popularity of this decorating technique is over the top. In fact, with the help of ordinary pictures, furniture design is changing dramatically. The most primitive locker becomes the center of the whole interior. What is needed for this?

Decoupage of an old cabinet

A set of tools and materials

  • Primer for wood.
  • Acrylic paint in desired color.
  • Colorless acrylic varnish.
  • PVA glue.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Paint brushes, for a large area - a roller.
  • Pictures: beautifully patterned napkins, drawings cut out from magazines, photos printed on a printer, and any other images you like.

Step-by-step instructions for decoupage an old cabinet

We prime the sanded surface of the cabinet twice and paint it in the color we need, in harmony with the main shade of the drawings, and at the same time with the interior of the room. Let the paint dry completely.

We cut out the images, picking them up by topic, or by color, or by size.

Examples of images for decoupage

We apply them to the surface of the cabinet, choosing the best option, mark the location with a pencil.

To achieve the effect of painting, and not pasted wallpaper, we pick up an emery cloth. Turn each drawing over and carefully thin out back side 5-7 mm from the edges, abrading the paper to the thickness of a cigarette.

Soak pictures in water. Let them soak completely.

We spread them on a towel, cover them with another towel on top.

Apply glue to the marked areas of the cabinet. We put the wet pictures in place, press and disperse the paper to the edges, achieving a perfect fit.

Gluing wet pictures

After waiting for the pictures to dry completely, cover them with varnish twice.

Now you will never part with a locker that was being prepared for removal to a landfill. A new, let's not be afraid of this word, piece of furniture for a long time will become the center of attention of both households and guests of the house.
