Using stencils to decorate your home - great alternative bored traditional ways wall decoration. If the idea of covering with wallpaper, paint or plaster does not inspire you, stencil patterns are just what you need.

This option for decorating a room has a number of positive features, and the first of them is the opportunity to get an inimitable interior that will have no analogues. After all, painting has always been considered a unique way of decorating walls.

Stencil drawings can only decorate walls, which makes this type of decoration truly versatile. The pattern can also be applied to furniture, doors or ceilings. And let this not scare those who do not feel the vocation to become an artist: in order to cover the surface with patterns using a stencil, no special artistic skills are required!

Where to start: preparing materials

Decide on a pattern that will act as a base. The pattern should be selected based on the overall style of the room. So, abstract or geometric images will look much better in a high-tech living room than in a rococo room.

If you are going to use a ready-made stencil, which you can buy at most hardware stores, it's up to you. But much more interesting and unique will be the drawing, the stencil for which you created yourself! Those of you who are good at drawing can design it yourself. If you are familiar with the art of drawing only by hearsay, it is better to trust the patterns found on the Internet and printed on a printer.

Advice! Patterns for stencils can be anything, but it is better to avoid drawings with too small details: there is a high probability that the paint will flow beyond the borders of an element that is too small. In addition, it is quite possible that from afar, small details of the picture will look illegible and sloppy.

When the drawing is ready, you will need to decide on the stencil material. Most often, thick cardboard or plastic is used. These materials are dense enough to avoid accidental tearing of thin partitions between the details of the pattern. In addition, they do not get wet from paint, do not get wet and do not wrap. You can also use paper, but in this case it is recommended to laminate the finished stencil - this will help protect against ink absorption and allow you to use it more than once.

The choice of drawing technique

  • Single color stencil. Only one color of paint is used for drawing a picture.
  • Multicolor (combined) stencil. It needs a few colors. different colors, patience, time and a certain skill. It is better for beginners to start learning not with him.
  • Volume. The stencil is made using putty, which is applied with a spatula. As a result, the drawing acquires a pleasant velvety. Typically, the thickness of the pattern is from 1 to 3 mm - this is quite enough to get a 3D effect.

Advice! If, when applied, the putty did not lie flat enough, and sloppy edges formed, do not worry: all defects can be corrected with a sandpaper.

  • Anti-stencil. Unlike other types of stencils, during the creation of which the paint is applied inside the pattern, the anti-stencil requires that a small area be painted over and beyond. This helps to achieve the glow effect. In this case, spray paint is usually used. Please note: to create an anti-stencil, that part of the picture that is usually thrown away is used - it is called a clipping. It is glued to the surface, and spray paint is applied over it.

How to choose a place for a stencil?

There are no universal tips on this, but stencil patterns look best on large planes. Therefore, if your room has a spacious wall that is not used for furniture or decorative elements, you can start with it. The stencil in this case should be large enough so that the drawing does not look lonely on the wall.

You can also beat with the help of stencil decor switches, sockets, shelves, bedside tables. As for the latter, the wall above them can be interestingly beaten by drawing on it the image of those objects that could stand on this furniture.

Making a stencil yourself

To create any type of stencil, you will need the following:

  • picture;
  • future stencil material (plastic, cardboard);
  • copy paper;
  • a simple pencil or marker;
  • stationery knife;
  • adhesive tape (ordinary or masking);
  • a piece of wallpaper or drawing paper for training;
  • durable smooth surface for cutting a stencil on it.

So, the drawing and material of the future stencil have been selected - then you need to decide on transferring the image to the base. If you are using cardboard or thick paper, transfer the pattern onto them using carbon paper. In the case of transparent plastic, it will be easier: just transfer the drawing onto it with a marker. To prevent the image from moving, attach it with tape.

Using a utility knife, cut out and delete all areas located inside the picture. To do this, place the future stencil on a smooth, durable surface that you won’t be sorry to damage with a knife.

  • Then comes the turn of coloring. Type on a brush not a large number of paint to keep it from flowing under the stencil. It's best to hold the brush at a right angle to the wall and "drive in" the paint.

Advice! If you use a thin brush and work on small parts, do not use the stuffing method, but paint over the pattern with an up and down movement. When applying spray paint, position the can at least 30 cm from the surface. When working with a sponge, the first two or three prints must be made on a “draft” - a piece of wallpaper or drawing paper to remove excess paint. When drawing a picture with a paint roller, then draw the unpainted corners and small details separately with a thin brush.

  • When the drawing is ready, carefully separate the stencil from the wall and enjoy your masterpiece.

Scissors, even the smallest, nail scissors, will leave jagged edges and deform the outline. If the edge of the template is not perfectly even, paint will fall under it and the outline will not turn out to be clear. The main types of stencils

Depending on the method of application, stencils of flowers on the wall are direct and reverse. The latter type of stencils is used less frequently than the first. A straight stencil, or template, is a sheet with a flower pattern cut out on it.

Using a direct stencil, you can create an elegant and beautiful pattern. They push him against the wall and sponge, brush or roller apply paint to the cut out part, thereby transferring the pattern of flowers to the surface of the wall.

A reverse stencil of flowers on a wall is the complete opposite of a direct template. In order to make a reverse stencil, it is necessary to cut the flowers strictly along the contour.

Drawings of flowers using a reverse stencil are applied to the wall very simply - we apply a stencil of flowers to the wall and paint over the space around it with paint.

Then, when the paint dries, it is necessary to remove the stencil, as a result we will get clear drawings of flowers, bouquets or floral ornaments on the wall. The reverse pattern of flowers is convenient to use on large areas.

Wall stencils are complex and simple. Complex - these are stencils when a drawing is created using paints of different colors, and simple stencils, on the contrary, are a drawing made with paint of the same color.

Exist volumetric stencils, which are performed using putty or decorative plaster. In order to make a three-dimensional stencil, you should take a ready-made stencil of flowers and butterflies for cutting, putty (it is better if you use decorative plaster instead of putty) and a spatula.

We choose a place on the wall where the future three-dimensional drawing of flowers will be placed, and glue the finished cut-out stencil of flowers and butterflies there on masking tape. Now, using a spatula, carefully apply decorative plaster to the fixed template and wait for it to dry a little.

Important! You should not wait for the plaster to dry completely, otherwise you will not be able to remove the stencil from the wall later.

After the plaster dries a little, you should carefully separate the stencil of flowers and butterflies from the wall. Again we are waiting for the three-dimensional drawing to dry completely on the wall. After the decorative plaster has completely dried with the help of a skin, it is necessary to grind the surface of the three-dimensional pattern.

If you want flowers and butterflies to look more impressive in a three-dimensional drawing, paint it with acrylic paints of different colors and shades.

Reusable stencils are designed for repeated use, they can also be purchased at the store or made by yourself. Reusable wall-cut flower stencils are usually used to create a repeating pattern of flowers - rapport.

This type does not have an adhesive base, and is attached to the wall using a double-sided masking tape.

With the help of disposable and reusable stencils of flowers and butterflies for painting on the walls, you can create a large number of different patterns on the wall.

You printed the drawing of flowers, but you have it on plain paper, which can become sour and deteriorate from dyes. Therefore it is worth transfer the flower pattern to moisture resistant material.

Of course, you can buy special material for making flower stencils for cutting on the wall, but you can also use improvised materials, such as tracing paper or parchment paper.

The next step is to transfer the color pattern from plain paper to a denser material. This procedure can be performed using carbon paper (carbon paper). If you don't have it you can attach a drawing of flowers and a blank for a stencil to the window glass(it should be light outside) and transfer the image.

Now the most difficult process- cutting out. In order to cut a stencil of flowers, birds, butterflies, you need to use scissors, a blade or a cutter. Scissors can cut large parts, and small ones can be cut with a blade. Carefully cut out drawings of flowers and butterflies around the office. A little patience - and the stencil of flowers and butterflies on the wall is ready.

DIY ready-made stencil of flowers and butterflies attach it to the wall you want to decorate and secure it with masking tape. Do not be afraid that masking tape will ruin your walls and leave marks on them - this is fiberglass adhesive tape, which is intended for various painting and painting works.

The main advantage of masking tape is that it easily peels off the walls and leaves no residue after use.

After fixing the stencil on the wall, we proceed to the choice of paint. It is best to opt for acrylic paints. The advantage of acrylic paints is that they are very wear-resistant to various types of physical and chemical influences, and are easy to use. They do not spread, dry quickly (in about 3-4 hours) and do not fade from ultraviolet rays.

Acrylic paints do not contain substances harmful to health, which is very important, especially when there are small children in the apartment. They do not have sharp unpleasant odors, do not burn or explode, and most importantly, they are environmentally friendly.

You can apply acrylic paints on any surface: wallpaper of various types, drywall, plaster.

We have decided on the type of paint, now we need to choose the right colors for painting on the walls. The choice of color depends on the color scheme of your interior and on the image of the future flower pattern.

If you have chosen to decorate your wall with drawings of flowers and butterflies, then you should opt for bright colors. Let it be yellow, pink, blue, green, orange and red.

We draw on the walls

Having chosen the type of paint and color scheme for your future drawing, we proceed to the most crucial moment - drawing on the walls. Paint should be applied either with a brush or sponge. The brush should have short, stiff bristles.

We slightly moisten the brush or sponge in the paint, it is desirable that they are semi-dry, otherwise the paint may spread and you will ruin the wall, and you will not get clear flower drawings on the wall.

If the drawing consists of different colors, then it is necessary to wait until one color dries, and only then apply another.

Before you start painting flowers and butterflies on the walls, you should practice on some unnecessary surface. Be sure to prepare an unnecessary towel or piece of cloth in advance, as you will need to remove excess paint from the template and brush.

Advice. Try to apply paint to the stencil of flowers evenly at the same angle and with the same intensity.

The paint can be applied not only with a brush and sponge, but also with a roller. This method of drawing a picture is suitable for working with paint of the same color. The roller must be made of a dense material that does not absorb paint. The roller has disadvantages: for example, when painting with a roller, the pattern may not be painted over in hard-to-reach places.

For small holes in the stencil, a sponge is suitable. Sponge is the most versatile material for painting on the wall. After you have applied a pattern of flowers and butterflies to the wall using a stencil, and the paint has dried, gently separate the stencil from the wall with light movements.

Having done all this laborious process, you can admire the drawings of flowers and butterflies on the walls in your interior.

allows you to achieve a variety of shapes and textures, creates the impression of naturalness, and therefore its decorative properties are valuable.

  • creating creative postcards, posters;
  • decoration of paintings with vignettes, corners;
  • in order to create calligraphic compositions;
  • for congratulations and holiday collages, captions for photos.

Stencil technology

Making your own template at home is not difficult - a simple set of materials and tools is enough, and the result will be visual, non-standard and very interesting. To make a high-quality, reliable stencil, perform a few simple operations:

  • prepare the wall bearing the pattern as for painting;
  • stick wallpaper for painting work;
  • achieve smoothness and even coverage;
  • use sponges, rollers, spray paint different shades.

Ready-made stencils from a design store are, of course, more professional. But a unique drawing is a real find for a decorator. Therefore, we proceed to create our own sketch. If drawing does not work out too well, you can download a suitable sample from the Internet and print it on a printer - the main thing is that it allows you to make cuts for paint and does not tear. Apply an impression with acrylic paints through a template on cardboard or vinyl.

Helpful Hint: Any patterns will work, but drawings that are overly detailed will be a poor choice. The paint will merge, small details will become illegible and smeared, and the view will become unpresentable.

Having prepared a drawing, you need to choose a good one, quality material for the base of the stencil. The easiest and cheapest way is to take a sheet of thick cardboard or plastic. The main condition is that the material should not tear, especially at the joints different elements, and not soak from the paint. If paper is used, then it can be mined - there are laminating devices for homework. The laminated sheet can be used repeatedly.

Patterning technology

In order for the paint to lie on the surface successfully and not spread, it is important to choose the right technique with which the drawing will be applied. There are several basic techniques:

  • pattern using one color. In this case, the result will be a monochrome drawing;
  • multicolor combo palette. Several different colors are used here, but it takes more time and patience to dry different layers of paint. This method is suitable for more experienced decorators who have already worked with the monochrome method;
  • holographic, or volumetric method. Here putty is used, which is applied with a special spatula. So you can achieve a "velvet" effect and a certain thickness of the image (1-3 millimeters), which even creates the appearance of a three-dimensional image.

Useful tip: if the layer of putty is not very even, you can use sandpaper to form a neat edge, wiping excess paint around the image with it.

  • reverse stencil. While ink is normally applied inside the slits, reverse stenciling achieves the opposite result - the ink covers the space outside the pattern. Due to this technique, the impression is obtained that the drawing emits a slight glow. Usually here it is convenient to take paint in spray cans. In the process of work, a clipping is used - part of the template, which will then be thrown away. It is glued to a wall or other surface, spraying with paint.

Choosing a place to place a picture

In general, the territory for the template is not limited by anything. But in order to achieve maximum decorative effect You can use traditional methods.
Most often, a large, spacious plane, empty and free of furniture, is used to apply a template pattern. A large and bright stencil is chosen for her, which will create an attractive pattern - it will help to interestingly beat the situation and add color to the atmosphere of the room.

Useful advice: do not take a modest, small picture for a large and empty wall - it looks mean and poor. Too large a stencil looks bad on a small wall, where there will be an effect of tightness and disproportion of space.

A good way is to beat with humor already standing furniture using an applied stencil. Above the table, you can draw a vase, a socket or a candle in a candelabra, as if they are standing on a tabletop. Above the shelf, an interesting idea would be the image of book spines or silhouettes of figurines.

Template Creation Tools

The available set of items will be a useful set for creating a stencil:

  • selected image;
  • suitable material - from cardboard and plastic to photographic paper, sometimes lavsan is used;
  • "copy paper";
  • pencils, felt-tip pens, markers (you can in one copy);
  • paper knife or scalpel;
  • masking tape and regular, transparent;
  • draft paper for experiments;
  • a wooden board (or other material) that is not a pity for cutting a template on it.

Useful advice: before the crucial moment of applying the drawing “whitewashed”, it is better to practice on a piece of paper, also checking the optimal combination of colors and the degree of fluidity of the paint.

Stencil cutting

The selected drawing must be transferred to the basis of the template using a carbon paper. If the basis is plexiglass or plastic, then a marker is enough to outline the outline of the picture. When copying, the picture shifts along the base, so it is better to fix its position with adhesive tape.
Then cut holes for the paint with a sharp clerical knife or scalpel. Remove layers of paper inside the outlines of the pattern. To make it as good as possible, it is better to do this work on a hard surface that will withstand blade movement - a cutting board or an unnecessary coating, a piece of linoleum.

drawing

After that, they begin to apply the image to the wall or door. It is important to clean and dry the surface from excess moisture or grease stains (otherwise the paint will spread and not lie down). They make outlines in the places where the drawing is placed - use a tape measure, a ruler.
The cut out template is attached to the surface with adhesive tape or glue in the form of a spray. The spray adhesive won't tear off a piece of wall, wallpaper, or paint when removing the template, and it's invisible and doesn't leave marks.
Paint the stencil with a brush or sponge. Take a little bit of paint so that it does not spread under the stencil layer. A convenient way to hold the brush is perpendicular to the wall, applying the paint with light strokes of the swab.
When painting small parts, it is better to use the technique of applying with up and down strokes. If an aerosol can is used, then keep at least 30 centimeters from the wall. Sponge is better to get wet first on a piece of paper, removing excess paint. If you make a large-scale drawing using a roller, then you will have to slightly correct the drawing by painting on small details and strokes after removing the stencil.
Having finished staining, the stencil is carefully removed, trying not to damage the image. Some time the result is dried.

The original design decision will be the creation of dynamic compositions, with a sense of humor or interesting inclusions. Picture a group of animals in motion or a collage of exotic plants or birds.
The choice of colors is individual, but acrylic is more often used due to its cheapness and practicality, ecological composition. Acrylic paints do not fade, they are often used in the composition decorative variety plasters, which allow you to create very beautiful bas-reliefs.
If we are talking about a diverse stencil, ideal solution will be the use of self-adhesive film - it is easy to apply and remove, helps to achieve a snug fit to the surface.

10-15 templates are combined into a single ideological picture, gradually, over time, supplementing with new elements. This creates an exquisite look for a home, creative studio or children's room, which will reflect the interests and original tastes of the inhabitants.

For original design surfaces of walls and even ceilings of residential premises of the apartment, different design tricks. It can be reliefs, painting, as well as stencil drawing. Last option, by the way, enjoys considerable popularity. And all because, using it, even an apartment owner who has no experience in decorating art is quite capable of independently decorating his home at a very good artistic level. But for this, of course, you need high-quality stencils.

Ready-made options can be found in specialized stores of finishing materials. But, it happens that a potential buyer is simply not satisfied with the proposed range. Is it possible to make stencils for decoration with your own hands, the templates of which will fit perfectly into the overall designer style? Well, why not try? For those who always like to do everything on their own, this publication will discuss the nuances of making these devices, as well as their correct use when decorating interiors.

A stencil is a device for creating a color image or relief on one of the surfaces. It can be designed for a one-time application of a pattern, for example, a panel, or it can be used repeatedly - with the repetition of a pattern, ornament or individual image elements over the entire surface to be decorated.

With the help of the made stencil template, you can quickly decorate walls, ceilings or even floors. The main thing is that anyone can do it, even those who are very far from art. In specialized stores, a considerable assortment of ready-made stencils with various patterns is presented. However, not everyone finds exactly the option that is ideal for a particular room setting. In addition, many prefer exclusive images inspired by their own imagination. Therefore, those who want to try their hand at making stencils are not decreasing.

The art of stencil drawing originated in the East. For example, in Japan and China, this method of decorating their homes, as well as fabrics used for decorating interiors, has been used for more than a millennium. Around the 15th century, stencils, as a “tool” for repeatedly transferring one picture, began to be widely used in Europe.

Today, screen painting, as the easiest and most affordable way for everyone to decorate the walls or ceilings of your home, is again in great demand. But it would be wrong to believe that the stencil hides opportunities for creativity. Firstly, the very creation of a template is already quite a creative process. Second, even though there is finished stencil, the master still has the opportunity to use it creatively, using various coloring compositions or with materials that add volume to the pattern.

Varieties of stencils

Stencils can be divided into several types according to various criteria. This must be able to navigate in order to accurately determine the choice of this device.

Differences in the material of manufacture

Stencils according to the material of manufacture can be divided into disposable and reusable options. Disposable templates are made from plain thick paper. They are selected if the drawing needs to be applied once. For example, these are elements of an ornament arranged in a panel or some kind of plot.

Reusable stencils for painted surfaces are made from the following materials:

  • Thin vinyl film . A film of any density, transparent or colored, is suitable for creating a template. However, a vinyl stencil is difficult to work with even with experience, especially if it is made of a very thin material. The paint used to transfer the pattern should have a medium or thick consistency so that it does not spread under the template pressed to the surface.

The film stencil requires periodic cleaning as it can easily stain areas that shouldn't be touched. Vinyl ready-made templates are sold in the form of individual small sheets, as well as in rolls. If you plan to cover most of the wall with a pattern, it is recommended to purchase several stencils with the same ornament. To speed up the decorating process, the sheets can be fastened together with adhesive tape.

On sale you can find stencils on a self-adhesive basis, which is temporarily covered with a protective backing. This backing is removed just before the stencil is attached to the surface.

  • Polyvinyl chloride. This denser, but still quite flexible plastic can be several millimeters thick. It is most often used to create relief patterns, since the thickness of PVC is able to hold a fairly thick plaster mass. With such a transfer of a three-dimensional pattern, it is best to use a solution with the addition of gypsum, which quickly hardens. And it will be possible to remove the stencil after setting the relief.

  • Cardboard. This material is used to make stencils when decorating walls with ordinary paint. A cardboard product can last a long time, since during its operation the figured windows will even be strengthened due to the hardened wound of the applied paint. However, when making a template from this material on your own, it is necessary to ensure that the cuts do not delaminate its structure, otherwise the lines of the pattern will turn out to be fuzzy. Therefore, for cutting cardboard, you must use a sharp knife with a narrow blade.

The traditional materials from which stencils are most often made were listed above. However, today you can pick up other options for bases that are suitable for cutting out a suitable pattern. By and large, it is permissible to use any material that is convenient and affordable for oneself, having the necessary thickness and density to create one or another template.

Number of colors and application layers used

Screen painting is also divided by the variety of shades used, by the number of applied layers of paint or plaster compositions. That is, for monochrome and multi-color, flat and three-dimensional decoration.

  • monochrome decorating with a stencil is carried out in one color. In this case, any option can be chosen: light details of the picture on a dark background, or, conversely, dark details on a light background. This design solution is most often used to create an accent in the interior, as well as to draw attention to a certain surface of the room.

At first glance, this method of drawing a picture seems to be the simplest. However, in order for it to look proper, the base to be applied requires serious preparation. In addition, in order for a single-color pattern to look clearly on the wall, the edges of its details must be very neat, so to speak, “focused”. And this can be achieved only by using a stencil made of hard, not thick material with perfectly evenly cut out windows.

  • Multicolor a variant of the drawing is performed using several colors. Moreover, if a repeating ornament is chosen for decoration, it is advisable to use a separate stencil for applying each of the colors, otherwise the paint may mix, and the print will turn out to be sloppy. In addition, a multi-color pattern can be applied to the surface in the form of a panel or a picture. In this case, one stencil is used, which is pre-fixed to the wall. And for its different windows, different colors are used, which, of course, requires a very careful approach to work, since correcting a mistake is extremely difficult.

  • flat drawing applied with paints of normal density in one or two layers. This method of decorating walls, as noted above, can be single-color or multi-color. If you plan to perform the second option, then a different stencil is used for each of the colors, even if they have exactly the same ornament.

  • Volumetric reliefs are created using thick undiluted, plaster or putty solutions. For them, stencils made of cardboard or polyvinyl chloride are used, having a sufficiently large thickness - up to 4 mm, capable of temporarily holding the weight of a thick layer of paint or other volume-forming composition.

  • Combined stencils. Using this technique, patterns are reproduced on surfaces, consisting of many elements, some of them are repeated in the composition, others are used only once. To apply a similar decoration option to the walls, a set of templates with different patterns is used.

If you plan to decorate a large area of \u200b\u200bthe wall with painting, then the stencil can be combined with. For example, as shown in the last illustration - a tree trunk is easier to draw on the wall with a pencil, and then paint in the chosen color. Also, the picket fence is easier to draw and paint than to make a stencil for it. For the remaining elements of the picture, corresponding templates are made.

Stages of work on the manufacture of a stencil and drawing drawings

The technology of wall painting using a stencil makes it possible to show one's creative abilities with quite affordable means, and at the same time diversify the interior design, make it exclusive.

The work process consists of the following stages of work:

  • Choosing the right screen pattern.
  • Printing and preparation of the template.
  • Stencil cutting.
  • Preparation of materials and tools.
  • Attaching the template to the wall.
  • Application of a paint or putty composition.
  • Additional drawing correction.

Stencil making

The stencil can be purchased ready-made, in this case, it remains only to transfer it to the surface to be decorated. However, if specialized stores did not find the image that, according to the owners, is most suitable for a particular room design, then they draw it on their own or select it on the Internet.

If a drawing for decoration is found, then it should be copied and printed. It is clear that the image does not always have the required dimensions, so it has to be enlarged. This process can also be done on a computer, then divide the template into sheets that are printed and glued together. True, many graphic formats at high magnification give a very strong “pixelation” of the image, and its contours turn out to be blurry.

Another option is to make the stencil drawing larger in size manually - this is the most time-consuming process, and is used if there are no other ways to enlarge the image.

  • A stencil printed on a regular A4 sheet must be drawn into squares 10 × 10 or 20 × 20 mm in size. The smaller the squares, the more accurately the drawing will be transferred.
  • You can first transfer the printed drawing to graph paper, with which it will be easier to control the lines of the ornament to the millimeter.
  • The squares can be numbered so as not to get confused when transferring the image.
  • Then the material is taken, on which the life-size stencil will be cut. It should also be drawn into the same number of squares. If the picture is enlarged 10 times, then the squares will also have a size of 100 × 100 or 200 × 200 mm. If necessary, each of the squares is divided into a finer grid.

  • Further, the drawing lines of each of the squares of the small template are carefully transferred to the squares under the same numbers of the large stencil. When transferring a drawing, you should ensure that the line from the previous square smoothly passes into the next area of \u200b\u200bthe grid. The lines of the image must be clear.

An excellent solution for transferring an image with its proportional increase in size can be to use special device- pantograph. Such a device can be reconfigured to different scaling, and even from a small-sized template, a quite decent panel can be obtained.

Once upon a time, pantographs were sold in stores " children's World» in the toy departments – the children really enjoyed the opportunity to copy the drawings with their enlargement. Now such a device can be searched in office supply stores. And for a good home craftsman, it will not be difficult to make such a copier yourself. His device is very simple, and is beautifully shown in the illustration above.

  • The next step is to cut the stencil. The sheet, on which the drawing is applied in full size, is laid on a solid surface. Then, using a sharp knife with a narrow blade (scalpel), the elements are cut along the contours marked with lines. It is important not to cut the jumpers between individual fragments, so as not to spoil the work.

Drawing a picture using paint

Paints for image reproduction are selected not only according to color scheme, but also depending on the type of surface on which it will be applied.

  • If the drawing will be applied to a surface previously coated with a water-based or acrylic paint, then compositions on water based. For example, acrylic decorative paints dry quickly, so the next coat can be applied in just a few minutes. The advantage of such varieties of paint compositions is that they are produced in a wide range of color spectrum, which allows them to be used for multi-color screen printing.
  • Water-based paints are also suitable for plastered surfaces.
  • If the wall being prepared for painting is painted with oil or alkyd paint, then similar compositions are used to apply the image. Acrylic or other water-based paints are not suitable for such a surface - they will not linger on it, and the work can be considered to be done in vain.

From the tools you should prepare soft flat and round brushes different widths, roller, clean foam sponge, cloth wipes, masking tape, and plastic wrap to protect floor covering from paint ingress.

So, the drawing work takes place in the following order:

  • The first step is to attach the stencil to the wall using masking tape. If the template is massive, for example, made of cardboard, then it may be necessary to strengthen the fastening with self-tapping screws. The stencil should be pressed against the wall surface as tightly as possible, otherwise the contours of the pattern may not be clear enough.
  • Further, with the help of a roller or sponge, paint is applied directly on top of the stencil through the cut-out windows. It should be thick enough and linger well on the surface.
  • If the image is large, then after applying the paint, it is better not to remove the stencil immediately - you need to give it time to grab.
  • If you plan to make a multi-color drawing, then first the elements that have one color are painted, and then another, third, etc. To avoid confusion, it is recommended that you always keep an image in color handy. Focusing on the finished drawing, it will be easier to work with large volumes. For each color, you must use your own brush so that there is no mixing of shades.

  • The paint is applied, starting from the edges of the cut out pattern, gradually moving towards its center.
  • If an image is applied several times through one stencil, then it is necessary to ensure that a large amount of paint does not accumulate on its surface, otherwise the following images will turn out to be smeared. In this case, special attention is paid to cleanliness. back side stencil - paint leaking there when moving to a new place can leave ugly spots on the wall.

Creating a relief image

It is somewhat more difficult to create a relief pattern using a stencil. But, despite the laboriousness of the process, this is a worthwhile business: the result will certainly please all the residents of the house and surprise the guests.

To perform this work, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • A sheet of dense foamed polyethylene or cardboard for making a stencil.
  • Masking tape, as well as self-tapping screws for fixing the stencil on the wall.
  • Gypsum putty to create a relief pattern.
  • Primer for surface preparation.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Acrylic paint.
  • Construction knife, plaster stack, spatula 60÷70 mm wide, brush medium hardness, scraper, spray gun, felt-tip pen or marker.

Wall decoration operations are carried out in the following order:

IllustrationBrief description of the operation to be performed
The first step is to make a stencil.
In this case, it is made from a sheet of dense foamed polyethylene, 4 mm thick, capable of holding its shape. It's not bad if the material is foil - it's easier to transfer the image, and the strength of the base from this is only higher.
The image is transferred to the sheet from a paper stencil using a marker.
Cut out fragments of the picture sharp knife. The material is easy to cut, so this process, with due care, will not be so difficult.
In the next step, the wall on which the relief will be applied is treated with a primer - this will provide conditions for good adhesion of materials.
After the primer dries, the stencil is fixed to the wall (in the example shown, this is done using self-tapping screws).
When the stencil is ready, the putty solution is mixed. It should have an average consistency, not spread and linger well on the wall. Finishing putty on a gypsum basis, it sets quite quickly, so it must be cooked in small portions, so that it is guaranteed to work out within about 20 minutes.
Next, the prepared putty mass is applied to the cut out parts of the stencil, filling the windows along its thickness.
After the fixed stencil is completely filled with putty, it should be left to dry for 40 ÷ 60 minutes, otherwise the drawing may be smeared when it is removed.
After the composition has set, the template is carefully removed and, if necessary, transferred to the adjacent wall area.
Further, the process of creating a relief is repeated in the same sequence.
The next step is to correct the relief using the same gypsum mass and paint stack.
Additional layers of putty are applied to certain areas of the drawing. This process will help to make the relief more voluminous and deep.
The work must be done very carefully so as not to accidentally damage the given shape of the pattern.
Further, without waiting for the complete drying of the applied solution, they pass over the ornament with a soft brush dipped in water.
This process will help smoothen the edges of volumetric elements, giving them softness and smoothness.
After the second layer of the solution dries, the details of the pattern are cleaned by hand using fine-grained sandpaper (180÷220).
Such processing will ennoble the relief, making it more accurate and expressive.
Having completed this sanding process, the wall must be completely covered again with a primer solution and allowed to dry well.
Then, additionally, volumetric elements are strengthened with a primer varnish, which will close the pores of the material and prevent the paint from being absorbed.
Next, the wall is completely painted in the overall selected color.
The paint is applied with a wide brush - a roller will not be an assistant here.
Particular attention should be paid to the voluminous details of the decor, as unpainted areas may remain, which will significantly reduce the quality of the finish.
At the final stage, the relief pattern is painted with “gold” using a thin brush, or paint is used, squeezed out of a special tube.
This process must be done very carefully and carefully, as the paint should not get on the main surface.
Agree that the combination of selected colors gives excellent harmony and matches the chosen style of wall decoration. Thanks to similar finish the room looks rich and noble.

This is just an example. But in fact, you can use other stencils for relief images, including those from “plant” or “bird” themes. And the drawings themselves can then, after high-quality processing of the created relief, be signed in several shades.

As you can see from the information above, making a stencil on your own is not so difficult. And with its help, even an inexperienced master should be able to finish the wall using paint or putty. Therefore, this method can be considered the best option for those who wish to design their residential properties with their own hands, but are still taking their first steps in this field.
