Multifunctional tool in the home workshop. Renovator, or multifunctional tool - selection rules and recommendations Why do you need a multifunctional tool

With one multifunctional electric tool, you can perform many different jobs that, with a conventional set of tools, can require professional skills and a lot of time. In this article, we will talk about the possibilities of engravers and renovators, consider positive and negative reviews, as well as what you need to pay attention to when choosing tools.

Under the multifunction electrical equipment imply oscillator instruments based on vibrations of the working part. Usually they are called "renovator", more precisely, a universal tool for repair, finishing, restoration work. But there is no exact name, some manufacturers or shops call them: an oscillating grinding tool, a vibration universal machine, a universal cutter, a multimaster, and even a vibrating bite.

The principle of operation is similar to vibration grinders, in other words, the processing of the material using the vibration of the working part. But the ability to install different nozzles just makes this equipment a universal device. Only with the help of one renovator it is possible to produce dozens, including: cutting and cutting almost all sheet materials; section of a part made of plastic, wood, drywall, ceramics, brick or iron; dismantling, cleaning the surface from plaster, silicone, putty, glue; a cut of a rectangular opening, a cut in a hard-to-reach place or an exact cut; grouting, sanding or grinding, etc.

Varieties of multifunctional tools

According to reviews, today the most popular solution is the renovator already described above. It can be in a set of home tools or replace a whole range of them. be an additional tool for installation work, crafts, repair. It may even be the main tool if you do not have a large amount of one job, and you constantly encounter with non-standard and various tasks.

Some manufacturers in multi-renovations have gone even further: an intermediate nozzle is connected to the electric drive, which makes it possible to change the principle of operation of the equipment. The change of specialization occurs due to interchangeable heads, each of them corresponds to a specific type of tool - renovator, drill, etc. The intermediate head can make the final nozzle move forward, vibrate or rotate. These kits are called "multi-tool", their capabilities depend directly on the configuration.

The experience of dentists in extracting material from the “part”, crushing, grinding and micro-milling can be completely transferred to the world home master. This set of tools traditional principle rotation is called "rotary engraver". These tools are designed for small amounts of work and are perfect in cases where it is important accuracy and precision. The possibilities of home use also depend directly on the set and configuration of nozzles.

An electric chisel, a perforator, a jackhammer in miniature belong to the “impact engraver” section. Used for chasing and engraving. This is probably the least popular multi-tool variant.

Advantages and difference of renovators

Many works that are carried out with hand tools differ only in pendulum or reciprocating movements. If, however, they are performed electrically, but the amplitude of movement of the working area is reduced by increasing the frequency, then we will have all the advantages of a hand tool, and at the same time increase productivity. As a result:

  • simplicity of work, without the presence of "professionalism";
  • high quality and accuracy of material processing;
  • tool safety and work safety (especially in contrast to high-speed tools that create the effect of equipment and material ejection);
  • not a large number of dust, minimum production of the part;
  • the ability to carry out non-standard work;
  • the ability to work with materials of any elasticity and hardness.

Nozzles and equipment of the renovator

Each specific work can be performed with the help of a renovator only if the kit contains certain nozzle. There are two most common ways to choose a renovator:

Regardless of the approach you need to pay attention to:

  • Availability positive feedback about the tool.
  • Availability or availability of nozzles for the selected renovator model.
  • What nozzles are required for your work, are they in the set, on sale.
  • The presence in the set of adapters for fixing equipment from other companies or the ability to purchase this adapter separately.
  • The versatility of the seat on the renovator, the ability to install nozzles from other manufacturers.
  • Some nozzle sets describe the total number of nozzle heads in the set and, as a rule, this number is “caught up” by the sanding sheet nozzles.
  • The location in the case of a place to store nozzles, the purchase of a separate case or savings and provide storage by other means.

The most popular method of fixation is when the nozzle is attached with a screw (under the hexagon). The more expensive one provides quick replacement of nozzles using a specially designed retainer.

The description of any nozzle indicates its purpose and materials that will be possible to process (ceramics, wood, glass, concrete, plastic, etc.). The sockets of the nozzles are either "sharpened" for a specific manufacturer, or can be universal.

The most popular nozzles for domestic use

segmented disk. It is made in the form of an incomplete circle, with a part of a segment of a complex shape or with a cut edge. Some manufacturers complete the tool with solid disks. Most often, they are all specialized in the type of materials and the task at hand. The disc can be rasped, grinding and polishing, sawing.

delta platform. This nozzle makes it possible to carry out grinding work. Depending on the manufacturer, may vary in size. Sanding sheets are attached to this nozzle.

On the inexpensive models, usually a solid platform. On more expensive ones that have a system for connecting vacuum cleaners - with holes for removing dust. Do not forget that the same holes must be on the installed emery sheets.

Triangular bits with diamond grit for sawing, carbide, for polishing are also produced.

saw blade. It has a complex or rectangular shape. Allows you to perform plunge cutting or other sawing of different materials. Selected according to the material and the task.

Depth limiter. An element that makes it possible to make cuts of certain sizes and depths, even when it is impossible to visually control the depth of the cut.

Scraper. Often also called a scraper, scraper, chisel. Used to remove residue building mixtures and glue, for cleaning surfaces, cutting and dismantling coatings, cleaning seams, etc.

With the popularity of renovators and consumer feedback, the scope of their use, the improvement of nozzles, and the expansion of applied tasks are also increasing. Now on the market you can see universal holders, they make it possible to include many new forms of cutters, tips, grinding nozzles, saw blades, etc. in the kit.

Features of choosing a renovator

Before purchasing, pay attention to the location of the buttons, the shape of the device, the presence of protection and grips. Add comfort at work reverse function, soft start system, the ability to connect a vacuum cleaner or an additional handle.

Although during the operation of the renovator the dust does not go in a column, the quality of work decreases, which is all the more important when grinding. The ability to connect a vacuum cleaner in this case is not at all an excess, but simply a necessity. How is the nozzle connected, is it convenient or not to control and hold the tool, how visible is the overview?

Without a smooth start, it is difficult to cleanly crash into a critical part, without error.

Producing non-standard and complex work, heavy equipment will tire you quickly. Therefore, when buying a renovator, be guided by reviews, the weight of the device and your endurance. But also remember that it is easy to lighten the tool with plastic, but to do plastic parts durable harder. High-quality winding and motor armature will always be massive.

Power and power supply of the renovator

These tools feed, like many, from batteries or electricity. All the advantages and disadvantages of battery units, generally suitable for all electrical equipment, are also noticeable here, but with a little clarification: even for network models, high power is not needed. Therefore, rechargeable ones, although slightly worse in performance, but not globally. You can forget about the choice of power. Choose your battery model based on battery life, convenience, and reviews.

By power level everything today existing models can be divided into the following groups:

  • Up to 100 watts - for unpretentious and light tasks. From cardboard to plywood, there will be no problems, just like with plastics and linoleum. Small and simple grinding and deburring operations are quite feasible.
  • 100-200 watts - medium load, suitable for occasional use and many occasional household chores.
  • 200-300 watts - makes it possible to work without overload with any materials specified in the instructions. It is a semi-professional tool.
  • Over 300 watts - durable equipment that can easily work with any materials. Usually used for professional purposes.

Oscillation angle, frequency and revolutions

RPMs are more important for multitools with an attachment that is used for spinning. For renovators the main fluctuation level working area . For different types of work and materials, the optimal frequency indicators are also different. Therefore, the mode of regulation of revolutions or oscillation frequency is of primary importance.

On various products, the adjustment is stepped or smooth. The minimum limit for renovators differs significantly, and the maximum limit is usually no more than 22,000 strokes / minute. When cutting metals and hard materials, minimum frequency limits are set, for plastic - medium, for plaster and soft wood- maximum, as for grinding work.

An indicator that is not adjustable by the user is the angle of oscillation (often indicated - oscillations). It differs in each model insignificantly: 1.3 – 1.7°. Some manufacturers do not indicate the amplitude from the middle position, but the full one, in this case, this figure looks like this: 2.7 - 3.3 °. None of the manufacturers substantiate the information in terms of amplitude, although it is easy to understand what exactly it affects: the stroke size of the working part of the nozzle. The higher the amplitude, the larger or longer the diameter of the nozzle, the longer is its movement through the part. This parameter has almost no effect on the choice of instrument.

In my house big choice power tools - grinder, screwdriver, puncher, a lot of nozzles for them. Knowing my hobby, my colleagues at work gave me a renovator. Now I am doing "sea trials" of this device. I’ll answer right away - until I noticed something that I didn’t make with the tools I have, but I don’t deny that it’s much better and easier to do this with a renovator. Moreover, this regarding cutting nails, drywall and wood. My opinion is that if you don’t mind the money, then you can buy this tool. I will be glad if my review could help you.

Recently bought, as they were very well heard from friends. The first thing I really liked was the weight, the set included a couple of discs for various surfaces, a vacuum nozzle, a scraper and a grinding nozzle. Everything was good quality. Immediately bought a set of accessories 38 pieces. Great product for home renovations. Great for removing linoleum and sealant. The price definitely matches the quality. Satisfied with the purchase, I think it's a gift for the money.

Victor. Yalta

The instrument itself is irreplaceable. Convenient in terms of any work, more in hard-to-reach areas. But I didn’t take into account one thing, the original nozzles (nail files and others expendable materials) wear out pretty quickly, and it’s no longer possible to repair and edit. The purchase of original spare parts costs half the price of the tool. Therefore, I recommend purchasing analogues of this miracle device, which parts will be more available.

Ordinary multi-tool with oscillating drive? What makes an electric multitool versatile? Where is it used and how is it chosen? It seems that we are again mired in questions - we will delve into and understand.

Passion for versatility

The versatility of the tool among experienced craftsmen causes ambiguous sensations. On the one hand, everyone wants to have a miracle machine in their arsenal that can close many other positions, the wallet will remain thicker, the tool box will be lighter. On the other hand, we understand that universality is the enemy of specialization - functionality restrictions increase, the quality of a single operation is clearly reduced. This is reality. Even with the current technological level, it is unlikely that manufacturers can offer professionals a decent "centaur" with a power of, say, more than one kilowatt, which will at least come close to the characteristics of individual instruments. And no one has the desire to try, to invest in a deliberately failed development.

But for a home workshop, where the intensity of use is moderate, and the situation is somewhat simpler with quality, a universal tool is extremely in demand. As an illustration, the constant attempts of Kulibins (with varying success) with non-standard devices to expand the scope of the usual units. The idea of using one power base (motor and controls) with several actuators has been around for a long time, but is being implemented by manufacturers very carefully. Most a prime example- additional nozzles for drills, or the Black & Decker MFL143KB-S modular screwdriver model.

Something happened in 2008. The patent for a multifunctional tool based on oscillatory technology has expired. Since 1967, C. & E. FEIN GmbH, one of the oldest and most respected tool companies, has had a monopoly. Their MultiMaster was a pioneer in its class, it is interesting that it first found application in medical institutions - as a cutter for removing plaster. And so, when the legal veil fell, many manufacturers began to produce their "oscillating" multi-tools, or renovators, including professional ones. So this instrument ceased to be exotic and began its formation as a separate class. The people ambiguously accepted new cars, disputes around them have been going on for several years, and there are many of them. It is worth noting that a large group of admirers of such “generalists” has already formed, but there are also those who treat universality with coolness. And many simply do not know what it is, they consider them to be a replica of conventional angle grinders, apparently because of the external similarity.

What are oscillating multitools

If we talk about the internal structure, then all multifunctional instruments (hereinafter we will call only oscillatory devices that way) are very similar. This speaks only of the design accuracy of the first developers - new class turned out to be very successful, almost perfect, for example, drills also differ little from each other in principle. The base is an elongated body-handle (like a small grinder), in which a small motor is located. The torque is transmitted to the working part, where the rotational movement is transformed into oscillatory, reciprocating movements of the working shaft.

In general, oscillatory motion is a high-frequency oscillation with a small amplitude, named by analogy with the specific motion of elementary particles, discovered in the 30s of the last century. This principle of operation of the drive has its clear advantages over translational or rotational:

  • No centrifugal ejection of material.
  • There is no serious danger from breaking the tooling.
  • It is possible to perform a plunge cut.
  • It is possible to process, cut, remove elastic materials.
  • No recoil and no kickback.
  • Small dust formation.
  • Relative ease of use.
  • High quality processing.

Compared with the eccentric movement, it is possible to cut materials, and a wide variety. Such a tool is subject to: wood and its sheet derivatives, plastic, metals, concrete, brick, fiberglass, laminates, tiles - there are no insurmountable restrictions, everything depends on the competent choice of a suitable canvas. It is the equipment that expands the number of available operations, and there can be many nozzles. Sometimes manufacturers divide them into groups and, in addition to the basic configuration, offer special kits designed for a specific area of \u200b\u200bapplication (floors, kitchen / bath, renovation, car repair shop, street / garden, shipbuilding). The main difference between all available blades and traditional blades is the Z-shape, and the cutting discs have a disc configuration. Due to this circumstance, the working edge is at a certain distance from the body (sometimes with an advantageous angle), and multitools have special features:

  • It is possible to dismantle the elements flush with the plane.
  • Can be cut close to an obstacle (wall, column).
  • You can immerse the equipment at any point of the workpiece, make an opening.
  • Flat surfaces can be scraped without problems.
  • The tool is functional even in very squeezed places (in corners, in niches).

You are probably wondering what are the main types of work performed by a multitool, at least the most “special” ones? You are welcome:

  • Removing grout, mortar from tile joints.
  • Cleaning the plane from tile adhesives, mortar / concrete influx (rasp).
  • Figured cutting of a ceramic tile.
  • Cutting channels in mineral structures.
  • Trimming at the place of the loot, door leaf, plinth, platband, laminate, parquet.
  • Roll dismantling floor coverings(carpet, linoleum).
  • Cutting soft rolled floor coverings.
  • Removal of elastic adhesives.
  • Submersible sawing of technical openings.
  • Sanding complex surfaces made of wood, metal, fiberglass, concrete, epoxy.
  • Flush cutting of nails, studs, pipes.
  • Sawing-trimming of wooden, metal, plastic profiles.
  • Grinding, rough fitting of parts with an emery block.
  • Dismantling of sealants, putties, waterproofing, anti-corrosion layers, paint.
  • Sawing GKL, GVL, fiberboard, OSB, chipboard, plywood, including curved cut.
  • Dismantling of subsystems of metal and wooden frames.
  • Production of expansion joints of temperature gaps on the walls and on the floor.
  • Easy milling of grooves, chamfering.
  • Cutting soft insulating materials.
  • Polishing.
  • Cutting and polishing stone.
  • Compaction of concrete.
  • Sharpening of hand tools.

Technical Features of the Multi-Tool

Power

Motors in renovators are not used too strong, the emphasis here is on the compactness of the tool, on a high stroke rate. You will have to choose from machines with a power of 150 to 300 watts. Naturally, those that are more powerful will give you more performance, ceteris paribus, they will provide more time for continuous operation, therefore they are intended for commercial use. Station wagons from Bosch, consuming 250 and 300 watts, are made in blue cases and are located in the professional catalog. For home craftsmen, the Germans offered a 180, 190 power tool and only one 250 W machine (Bosch PMF 250 CES). As you can see, manufacturers (and many) put the strength indicator in the name of the model, which emphasizes the importance of the characteristic.

Velocity and amplitude

The rig of any multitool runs short, this movement is more like a vibration. However, the speed of movement is quite high, and the higher it is, the faster and cleaner the work is done. The average is in the region of 20,000 strokes per minute, but there are devices even faster. For example, Fein FMM 250 Q at idle produces 22,000 vibrations.

In passports for products, you can almost always find an indication of the speed range, this is due to the fact that for processing various materials it makes sense to choose your speed. For sawing metal, we slow down, for plastics, the average frequency is suitable, and for working with non-hard wood, we should not grind down, we accelerate to the full. There is always speed control, it is always implemented electronically. In most cases, the speed is set in steps - with a wheel with divisions, which is located on the handle, or from the end (near the cord), as on the Skil 1470AA. The FEIN multitool also has a magic wheel, but it works steplessly. Particular attention can be paid to the AEG BWS 12C Li Kit3 or RYOBI RMT 1801 M models, where instead of the power-on slider, a start key is used, which allows you to adjust the speed in real time by changing the pressing force (0-20,000 rpm). In general, the frequency adjustment range different models varies greatly, the larger it is, the more options the operator will have. For example, the Bosch PMF 180 E has the ability to preset 15,000-21,000 strokes per minute, and in the Makita BTM 40RFE, the oscillation can be slowed down to 6000 oscillations.

Under load, the speed of the tool drops significantly, but if the multitool is equipped with constant electronics (constancy electronics), then the machine will automatically maintain the rotational speed of the tooling that the operator has chosen, and the quality of the operations performed will remain at the proper level. Of course, a lot here depends on the manner in which the tool is fed and the presence of a power reserve (power). This system is the prerogative of relatively powerful station wagons of the pro class (Bosch GOP 250 CE Professional).

Angle (range) of oscillation

Let's say a few words about the length of the stroke. If you start comparing specifications several models, you may notice that some have an angle of oscillation of 2.8-3 degrees, and some - about 1.4-1.5 degrees. No, this does not speak of the superpowers of specific multitools, their developers simply indicate in their passports either the full amplitude (RYOBI RMT 1801 M - 3 degrees) or a separate right/left deviation from the axis (DREMEL MULTI-MAX MM40). Makita LXMT025 and TM3000CX5 have one of the widest ranges - 3.2 degrees.

Smooth start

Despite the modest power, some models of renovators can boast of a system " smooth start"- Makita BTM 40RFE, DREMEL Multi-Max MM 40. Obviously, this is not about protection against high inrush currents, the manufacturer thus stabilizes the tool at the beginning of work, allows you to gently cut into the material, preventing damage to an expensive part.

dust removal

Due to the fact that the multitool is often used at the finishing stages of work, and grinding is one of the main functions of this tool, the issue of dust protection becomes very relevant. Most generalists can connect to an industrial vacuum cleaner. But there is no corresponding pipe on the body, it must be connected before starting work. plastic element dust removal system with a suction edge is put on the casing near the blade, after which it is attached to the casing from below with clamps / brackets (Skil 1470). Ergonomics suffer somewhat from this (it becomes difficult to grasp the handle), but the possibility of clean work should be. The FEIN company went even further, its marketers offered the consumer a top-end set, which, in addition to the “multimaster”, includes a vacuum cleaner.

Please note that if you are using a delta sanding platform from another manufacturer, then it, like the corresponding sanding sheets, must have holes for dust extraction.

Snap fastening

Multitool accessories are everything. There are a great variety of all kinds of nozzles, and the number of their sizes is steadily growing. Specificity, the very principle of the existence of multifunctional machines involves frequent change of equipment. How quickly and reliably this is done determines not only the feeling of comfort from using an innovative machine, but also the overall efficiency of the device, for example, on a construction site. The standard option is when the nozzle is put on the seat and fixed with a hex head screw (Milwaukee C12 MT, Bosch PMF 190 E). The advanced version is toolless (Boshevtsy called it SDS) - usually there you just need to move the locking lever aside and return it to its original position after installing the equipment (Fein FMM 250 Q, Bosch GOP 300 SCE Professional).

Next important point consists in the interchangeability of equipment from different firms. Nozzles are expensive, their range is huge, some manufacturers are constantly coming up with something new - all this pushes both users and developers to unify. At one time, consumers sinned with artisanal alterations of inexpensive nozzles for their universal drives, now this is not necessary. Bosch has proposed to introduce common system rigging, and many companies supported it. The Oscillating Interface System (OIS) is a new 12-point fastening system, in which the blade can be installed not only frontally, but also at an angle relative to the body axis - in a full 360 ° range. By rearranging the tooling during installation, we can provide even greater throughput of the tool, the most clamped places become available for processing. The OIS system is not accepted by all manufacturers (FEIN GmbH goes its own way), but inexpensive equipment from domestic companies will be suitable. And the Bosch developers complete their multi-tools with a universal adapter for the possibility of attaching (without backlash and loss of power moment) nozzles from third-party manufacturers that have not succumbed to unification. Adapters are also included in the kit by Makita developers.

Battery Renovator

A miniature tool with low power consumption is an ideal object for wireless technology. The value of mobility here increases significantly, and economical motors do not drain batteries so quickly. Many models of a corded instrument, with minor modifications, are implemented as battery-powered. A relatively small amount of energy is offset by a high charging speed - some devices restore the battery in 30 minutes (Black & Decker HPL108MTKA), and the unit receives 75-80% of the energy in a third or half of the estimated time. All charging processes are controlled by electronics - it is simply impossible to overload the battery, overheat, deeply discharge it. The control systems can even recognize load and idle speed, in the second case, the speed of the tool is automatically reduced, conserving battery power. It will be incredibly helpful LED indication remaining charge.

Most manufacturers use ultra-small batteries for multitools that fit in the handle (voltage 9.6-12 volts, capacity 1.3-1.5 Ah) - for example, Bosch GOP 10.8 V-LI Professional, Milwaukee C12 MT , AEG BWS 12C Li Kit3, Fein MSX 315. Their performance is not the most outstanding, but quite suitable for many conditions. But the mass of such devices (even with a battery) is in the region of one kilogram. Makitovtsy did not become shallow, they relied on a solid energy resource and decent torque. Their machines are powered by "adult" batteries, which they put on angle grinders: Makita BTM 40RFE (14.4 V, 3 Ah), Makita BTM50Z (18 V, 3 Ah). Here the manufacturer may already indicate the full power of the tool (250-280 W), but the mass of the units is approaching the 2 kg mark. Solid characteristics similar to network models are shown by Fein AFMM 14 with a block (14.4 V, 3 Ah), weighing 1.7 kg. The new model PORTER-CABLE PCCK510LA (18 V) also entered the fight for the palm.

As for the price, you have to pay a little more for mobility, but for your regular customers some manufacturers offer a flexible solution. You can purchase a device with two batteries and a charger, or with one battery. If you already have a tool with unified power supplies and you have charger- you can buy a completely “naked” multitool several times cheaper than the equipped one.

We add that many cordless multi-tools have a built-in LED flashlight to illuminate the working area (wired machines cannot boast of such an option due to the parameters of the general network). In some cases, it is simply irreplaceable.

Ease of use is the second productivity

The ergonomics of a hand tool is always very important criterion choice. The device should be as convenient as possible for its owner, only then you can count on high quality work and getting pleasure from the process. That is why we always recommend a comprehensive inspection of the machine before buying, if possible, even a light test drive. Where to look? Why shake?

We check how large the body of the multitool is - after all, it is also the main handle. Most users prefer the implement to be easily wrapped around for better grip and control. High-quality anti-slip pads will be a big plus.

We pay attention to the weight distribution of the tool - the excessive “pecking” of the machine by the front part should be considered as some disadvantage, this is especially true for powerful devices close in weight to two kilograms.

Testing controls. The power slider must be securely fixed in the on position, in no case should it be knocked out during operation. If you are interested in a model with a trigger, then try to understand how sensitive it is, whether it is possible for them to “gas” correctly. The speed control wheel must be located away from the palm covering the body, otherwise there may be options for inadvertent change in setting.

Be sure to inspect the power cord. A cable that is too stiff and too short should be alert - it can greatly limit freedom of movement. A length of 3 meters will be normal, the FEIN GmbH tool is equipped with a 5 meter cord - this is ideal. An important node is the entry point to the instrument, its reliability should not be in doubt. Boshevtsy even applied their “proprietary” hinged technology here.

An interesting point is an additional handle that allows you to make a two-handed grip. Such an element is available in a powerful household Bosch models The PMF 250 CES is also anti-vibration and can be screwed in from both sides.

dive restriction. Tooling depth control is usually carried out visually, according to a scale located directly on the canvas. But there is an option with a remote limiter - this is a multi-stage large plastic washer that is put on the “trunk” of the gearbox. The tool plunges into the material until one of the washer protrusions of different sizes rests against the workpiece.

We try how easily the dust extraction system is fixed, we understand how the overall ergonomics of the product changes from this.

Compare the actual and possible equipment of several multi-tools. A truly multifunctional tool will become only if it is possible to use the maximum types of equipment, even if it needs to be purchased additionally. You should not give up such advantages as: a solid case, a box for nozzles, a high-quality tool bag.

Well, and work ... We turn on the tool in the network, we drive it at idle at different speeds. If they let you (this happens at authorized points of sale, in large stores), then we give the load. For an oscillatory multifunctional unit, vibration indicators can be critical - therefore, all attention is here. Plus, listen carefully to the motor.

Now we can draw some conclusions, answer a couple of fundamental questions. So let's go.

The "oscillatory" multitool is not a hybrid of several traditional units, it is a separate class of tool.

A station wagon running on an oscillating drive cannot, in many cases, be replaced by something else.

The multi-tool is ideal for restoration and repair work. There are a lot of options for using a multifunctional drive, their number is constantly growing with the production of new nozzles.

The real popular popularity of such an instrument is not far off.

Renovator is the trade name of the manufacturer of the first electric multi-tools, and has become the common name for all such multi-tools. Renovator is a universal assistant. You can buy a multi-tool from most well-known manufacturers such as Bosch, Makita, Dremel, Hitachi.

What is a multi tool

The multifunctional tool has a compact body and a huge number of attachments. The device will not cope with a large amount of work, so the renovator is useless at a construction site. For small home repairs, the multitool is ideal. The renovator works with any materials: wood, plastic, metal. It is indispensable for working in hard-to-reach places where a grinder or a circular saw cannot pass. Unlike professional power tools, the renovator is not traumatic.

A multifunctional power tool with nozzles will help you perform the following types of work:

  • sand the surface;
  • cut finishing materials;
  • cut off a protruding nail;
  • cut a hole in the board;
  • remove paint;
  • dismantle individual tiles;
  • clear the inter-tile seams;
  • sharpen hand tools.

How does it work

Renovator is an oscillating power tool. Oscillation is translated from German as swinging. The working canvases of the renovator do not rotate, but oscillate with a small amplitude. The multifunctional oscillating tool has advantages over conventional cutting and sawing devices:

  • sawdust does not scatter behind the blade;
  • the destruction of the cutting blade does not harm the user;
  • plunge cut can be made.

Technical specifications

The power of multifunctional renovators ranges from 180 to 500 watts. At high performance, the working surface makes 20,000 vibrations per minute. The higher the power, the more efficient the renovator will work. The speed can be adjusted. For sanding and woodworking, the maximum frequency is recommended, and for cutting metal, the average frequency. The full amplitude of oscillation is from 2.6 to 3.0 degrees. There are corded and cordless multifunctional electric tools.

Previously, manufacturers produced a universal tool with their own type of fastening. Users had to look for adapters. Now most models use the universal twelve-point Oscillating Interface System (OIS) mounting system proposed by Bosh. Working cloths are established concerning the case under one of 12 corners.

In 2016, the giant companies Fein and Bosch developed new fastening standards: Starlock, Starlock PLUS, Starlock MAX, allowing you to change equipment without using keys. Renovators with a Starlock MAX receptacle can use three standard accessories. Devices with Starlock PLUS mount - Starlock and PLUS accessories. Only Starlock accessories are suitable for tools with a Starlock socket. You can assemble a set of nozzles with different functions. This is:

  • Sanding attachments - soleplates different forms(round, triangular or small for hard-to-reach places) to which abrasive skins are attached.
  • Polishing pads are felt pads used with polishing fluids.
  • Sawing attachments - blades of different shapes and sizes. Rectangular are used to make cutouts. Disc blades are used for long and straight cuts. Semi-circular cutters are suitable for working near corners.
  • Diamond-coated nozzles - blades that cut tiles and clear tile joints.
  • Scrapers - blades of various shapes and thicknesses for removing paint, floor and other coatings.

This is a basic set of multifunctional accessories for the universal cutter. There is a special purpose tool. For example:

  • knives for removing car windows;
  • nozzles for grinding profiled moldings and grooves.

The best multi tool

Fein began to use the oscillating principle for the production of power tools 40 years ago. In 2008, the patent for this invention ended, and all leading manufacturers began to mass-produce multifunctional electric tools. Today you can buy a renovator in the online store of many famous brands.

How to choose a multi-tool

The higher the power of the tool, the larger and less convenient it is. Think about what is more important to you. The advantage of battery models is independence from the network, but such devices are more expensive. A half-charged or old battery will not allow you to work at full capacity. When working indoors, it is better to choose the network option. Pay attention to whether the work sheets can be installed at different angles, as well as compatibility with universal types of fasteners. Convenient modern devices with the ability to quickly change nozzles without keys.

It has been relatively little time since the multitool became widespread. One decade of mass sales was not enough to take root firmly in the minds of the current generation of builders. Many experienced craftsmen, have not yet heard of this device, or at least have not used it personally. In this article, we want to dispel all possible ambiguities, talk about the principle of operation of the renovator and show video examples of using this tool.

Device and principle of operation

The whole essence of the work of the multitool is built on the principle of oscillation (oscillations). The working nozzle at high speed, from 10,000 rpm, moves from side to side, biting into the material or grinding any surface. The deviation of the nozzle is approximately 2-3 degrees, and differs slightly for different models. The tool practically does not pose a danger to the worker, and can cause injury only with prolonged exposure to unprotected areas of the body.

Almost all models of renovators have an electric drive and operate from a network or battery. Inside the device there is a motor that transmits rotation to a spindle with an eccentric, which creates vibration on the clamp with a nozzle. This characteristic only briefly outlines the essence of the work of the renovator. Modern models have more complex structure, which include an electronic speed controller, a quick-clamping mechanism, accessory equipment interfaces and other conveniences. To see the device of the multitool more clearly, we recommend watching a video on how the renovator works and what components it consists of.

How to use the renovator

As you know, the multitool is a compact and easy-to-use tool, aimed more at household than at professional use. It does not require the worker to have special knowledge or skills in its application. Perhaps the most important thing to navigate before using this device is in its nozzles. Sawing wood, cutting metal or grinding various surfaces will not be a serious problem even for beginners.

The force of pressure and the angle of inclination of the nozzle depend on the power and speed of a single tool and are not particularly important when working. Behind a short time operation of your multitool, you will determine the approximate speed of cutting or grinding, and easily find best way processing of any material. To obtain general idea about the operation of the multifunctional tool, watch the video of the work of the renovator and simply repeat what you see.

The nozzles of a multifunctional tool are replaced using a hex wrench or a special quick-clamping mechanism, the principle of operation of which must be indicated in the instructions for the device. Also in the documentation, the number of revolutions at all speeds is prescribed if the renovator is equipped with a regulator. In general, the hero of this article is very simple, and to learn how to work as a renovator, the video will help only at the initial stage of acquaintance. For effective use instrument, there is nothing better personal experience for dealing with him.

Examples of using

Today, the multitool is most commonly used in sawing, cutting, sanding and removing dried mortar. To make the work of the renovator as efficient as possible, it is better to use special nozzles designed for specific tasks and materials. Below we list which interchangeable accessories are suitable for certain types of work.

Sawing wood
When working as a wood renovator, you can be sure that the saw cut will be even and smooth, without any notches. With a small amount of work, this device is great for trimming, sawing, or cutting through holes. Replaceable nozzles suitable for wood can be used when working with plastic, drywall and linoleum.

Grinding and polishing
One of the most strengths renovator when processing small surfaces. A vibrating tool is often used to remove old paint, car bodywork or to smooth the surface of wood. Grinding nozzles have a triangular shape, on which the abrasive material is glued. The sanding sheet may have holes for better dust removal when working with a vacuum cleaner.

Removal of mortars
Due to its vibrating features, the multitool can be effectively used as a spatula or chisel, in the removal of dried building mixtures. A special semicircular nozzle will help to easily clean the seams between the tiles, and with the help of a miniature spatula, you can separate the glued linoleum from the floor or remove the layer of putty from the wall. Of course, for processing large areas the renovator will take a decent amount of time. This tool is best used in hard-to-reach places or problem areas.

Actually, both one and the second name of this device are not entirely correct. After all multifunctional tool besides it, grinders are also called, and the renovator is the name of one of these devices.

This is almost the same as Makita is called a hand-held circular saw, although Makita manufactures almost the entire line of hand-held power tools, including this miracle of technology, which we will continue to call the renovator in the article for ease of understanding.

This tool appeared in our stores a few years ago and, if you unconditionally believe the commercials, it had to sweep almost everything else out of our workshops and pantries: from a jigsaw and a chisel with a hammer to a grinder with a perforator. Is this really so, we will try to figure it out in this article.

The device and principle of operation of the multifunctional tool

About this - first of all. Because, many not very fair critics of the instrument, not understanding this very principle, argue that the very design of the instrument provokes its rapid failure.

It is quite difficult for a non-specialist to understand this almost x-ray image of a renovator, but anyone will notice that the main unit in it is the same electric motor as in most of its size. hand power tools. So, at the end of the output shaft of this electric motor, an eccentric is installed, which, by means of a fork, transmits oscillatory movements to the working head of the renovator. This, practically the only loaded unit, is completely lubricated with grease, which provides for a rather long service life.

As you can see, something that initially did not provide for long-term operation can quickly break down here. And it could be a tool from a disgusting manufacturer. But they began to produce it, both large manufacturers of such equipment, and numerous Chinese garage cooperatives, which sometimes do not even put a label on their products. Therefore, the choice of a renovator must be approached wisely.

How to choose a renovator?

Everyone who already owns this multifunctional tool, among its main shortcomings, calls the high cost of nozzles. One quality working nozzle can cost as much as 1/3 of the tool itself, which already includes several of the same. Paradox? You might even think that the renovator itself is just a free attachment to its nozzles. Of course, this is not true. It's easy if you are offered a tool complete with huge amount nozzles for 3000 rubles, it is worth considering.

Therefore, if you decide to purchase this multifunctional device, we recommend that you pay attention to companies that you trust unconditionally, and it is better to choose the minimum number of nozzles.

Firstly, most users claim that they really work with 3 - 4 of them, and secondly, it is better to buy expensive, but initially high-quality, branded nozzles separately - it will definitely come out cheaper. Well, and thirdly, there is an even more rational way, but we will talk about it in a separate section of this article.

If you, not knowing what kind of animal it is - a renovator - decide to take a very inexpensive multifunctional tool for a test: from a obviously dark horse at a price of 1200 rubles, then follow a few simple rules:

  • if at this price more than 2 nozzles are attached to it - do not take it;
  • if the vibration of the hand continues after turning off the tool, do not take it;
  • turn it on and let it idle for at least 3 - 4 minutes and if the tool gets hot - do not take it.

If the top 3 points are met, and the desire to purchase a cheap renovator has not disappeared, remember that the cost of a normal tool starts at least 5 thousand rubles, and it is intended for the types of work that we list below, but first about nozzles.

Nozzles for the renovator

The renovator can come with up to 40 nozzles for various purposes. Not all of them will be useful to you in your work, so weigh your needs with the proposed tool kit.

Appointment of nozzles:

  • triangular nozzles: with sandpaper - for grinding, with other interchangeable surfaces - for polishing wood and soft metals;
  • scrapers E-scraper - for linoleum, carpet, for removing paint and glue;
  • semi-circular saw blades with teeth - for cutting plastic and soft metal;
  • semi-circular diamond-tipped circular saw blades - remove hardened solution at the joints between tiles, make small strobes in concrete and brick;
  • E-cut angle saws are plunge blades for cutting wood, plastic, copper and plastic pipes, the best specimens are for ferrous metal.

This is the main purpose of the nozzles, but they can be combined at your discretion and used for other types of work. In this multifunctional tool, the boundaries of the purpose of one or another type of nozzles are rather blurred. Of course, you definitely won’t be able to achieve the peppy cutting of thick hardened bolts shown in commercials with the nozzles attached to the tool, but expensive saws for this are on sale. Complete your renovator with them, and save the regular blades for soft materials where he is indispensable.

It should be mentioned that there are also interchangeable heads for some tools: screwdriver, wrench, etc.

But, in our opinion, this is already a very unjustified unification, although some users who have completed certain tasks with their help, especially in hard-to-reach places, they may not agree with us.

Types of work performed with the help of a renovator

First of all, this tool is intended for the mechanization of a large number of small, auxiliary housework. It is almost indispensable when finishing and working in hard-to-reach places on small areas surfaces.

Using it to cut rebar or open a large section of wood to a great length is the height of stupidity.

What can a renovator do and what is it intended for:

1. Assist with the removal of old coatings different kind- carpet, linoleum, tile other, remove silicone or sealant from the seams.

2. Cut holes of rectangular or any other polygonal shape in drywall, wood, fiberboard, chipboard, plastic and the same tile.

3. Perform a large number of cutting and undercutting work in hard-to-reach places, beyond the strength of any other tool.

4. Sand or polish surfaces, incl. in those still hard-to-reach corners that cannot be processed with anything with such care.

5. Make perfect flush cuts, various kinds of selections in soft (and sometimes not very, due to the active wear of the nozzle) material with amazing cleanliness that you will not get when using other tools.

And it is also worth mentioning the exceptional injury safety of this multifunctional tool. They are almost impossible to injure.

In addition to network renovators, of course, there are battery versions of the tool, which makes it even more mobile to use.

It is about such specific types of work, which are either impossible at all, or extremely difficult to perform with the help of another electric or hand tool, and all the arguments of his opponents are broken. And, I must say, there are many of them. First of all, because of manufacturers who fill the market with clearly low-quality products (including nozzles), and secondly because of consumers who are trying to get from the tool what it is not intended for.

If tool tips are worn out

This section of the article is just for those who have not joined the ranks of the opponents of the renovator, but are experiencing difficulties in the full use of the tool due to the high cost of high-quality nozzles for it.

And here in order:

1. If your deltoid grinding and polishing tool is worn out, you can replace it with a small diameter grinder tool. To do this, you need to remove the regular mount of this disk and install it using the renovator mounting screw through a suitable washer. The standard tightening forces are enough for the confident behavior of the device during grinding and polishing. To work in hard-to-reach places, you can cut the round nozzle in the shape of your native deltoid. In this case, the emery pads and polishing mugs will also need to be customized in shape.

The situation is a little worse with Bosch renovators and the like, with a self-clamping device, but there the nozzles will not fail so soon, but you can use the same overlays, but trimmed to size.

2. If your scraper blade is worn out during work, restore it by simple sharpening, if you need to harden it, harden it. The only condition: do not overheat. Heat to a slightly reddish color and - in oil for 3 - 4 seconds, and only then in water. After that, carefully polish until the black coating is removed.

3. Diamond coating on nozzles for working with concrete, mortar and brick at home, you naturally cannot restore, and this is the only nozzle that is worth buying. But abrasive material from under a good coarse-grained wheel, collected after removing the metal dust with a magnet and glued to the nozzle with polyurethane glue, will restore some of its performance. Having several of them, you can do the same job, and repeat the recovery procedure.

4. Now about the most wearable attachments - E-cut angle saws. If your saw is out of order after long-term operation, having served you faithfully, then such a saw should simply be sharpened. And this can be done with a small diamond disc and grinders.

The same procedure can be done with semi-circular saw blades with teeth, and repeated more than once. In the case when you grind off the hardened layer - harden according to the procedure described above. Harden only the cutting part.

If your E-cut angle saw is not worth a good word and worn out on the first wooden blocks, do not rush to throw it away anyway. There is a way to restore it and get a quality tool, spending much less money than you spend on purchasing a quality nozzle, the cost of which can reach half the price of the renovator itself.

Making a nozzle for a renovator with your own hands

The described method allows you to make an excellent durable saw for wood and plastic, about metal - a little later.

1. We buy in the store a high-quality fitting hacksaw for wood with a fine tooth. She, as a rule, has high quality steel and, most importantly, a wide blade, which allows us to fully restore the nozzle, including its length.

2. We mark the hacksaw blade along the width of the nozzle and cut it into blanks using a grinder. From such a saw you get 7 pieces.

3. We cut off the working part from the native nozzle.

4. We mark and drill 2 mounting holes in it. First we use a 1.5 - 2 mm drill.

5. We release the back of the blanks from the file, heating it with gas burner to a crimson glow and let cool in the air.

6. We mark the holes, aligning them with the prepared part of the standard nozzle, and drill them using drills in sequence: first, the same as when drilling the nozzle shank, and then, with a diameter of 6 mm. With the same drill, we increase the holes in the shank.

7. After drilling and marking, we bend the released part of our blanks at an angle slightly less than that that was with the standard instrument. We connect both parts with short M6 bolts - the angle will even out.

Such a nozzle will serve you for a long time no worse than a regular one from good manufacturer, will cost at least 5-6 times cheaper, given the cost of a hacksaw and 6 spare work surfaces. And with her work, she will cope no worse than the purchased one, or even better.

Yes, do not forget about the possibility of its repeated sharpening, which is provided by the manufacturer of the hacksaw, which served as a donor of blades.

Finally. For metal, you can also take a good hacksaw blade, cut it into pieces and carefully weld it to the base, removing the worn part. Here it is important to weld the blade with teeth with high quality and without overheating and carefully process the seam in thickness.
