Armchair with fabric cover

Before you start making pear, you need to solve a number of questions for yourself:

  1. Having decided for which room we are sewing a pouffe, choose the most optimal sizes for it.
  2. Depending on the design style of the room, decide on the texture and color scheme for the upholstery fabric.
  3. Choose your filler.
  4. Prepare all the necessary tools and auxiliary materials for the job.

What should be the size

The dimensions of the future bag chair are selected depending on the availability free space in the room and on the height of a person, whether it is an adult or a child:

  • for people up to 150 cm tall, a chair with a diameter of up to 70 cm is suitable;
  • for a person with a height of 150 to 170 centimeters, a pouffe with dimensions of at least 80 cm in diameter will be optimal;
  • when the height is over 170cm, the chair diameter should be over 90cm.

Not the right size

The size is just right!

We have given an example of approximate sizes that a bag chair should have, you decide for yourself what will be best for you. But, most importantly, remember - for coziness and comfort there is no too big chair. The larger it is, the more accurately it takes shape. human body, thereby providing maximum convenience. Therefore, you should not save on fabric and fillers, especially when free area room allows it.

Making a frameless chair

If the tailoring of the chair is intended for arranging a children's room, its design can be made in different bright and cheerful colors - with prints, polka dots, flowers, etc. A soft pear ottoman can also be decorated with decor in the form of favorite children's cartoon characters.

A handmade bag chair will be great and handy accessory for the nursery, and thanks to its lightness and safety due to the absence of sharp corners, your child can easily move it around the room. Sewing a chair made of vinyl or eco-leather for a nursery will make it much easier to care for it, as you can wipe the furniture with a sponge or a soft brush.

Eco-leather ball chair

For a living room or bedroom, the pear chair design should be chosen in accordance with the interior of the room. So, for example, chairs, the upholstery of which is made from natural fabrics - linen or cotton, are perfect for a country-style interior.

Chenille fabric can be used for sewing a bag chair

If the interior of the room is made in the fusion style, you will have many ways to design bag chairs - they can be bright accents of the room or, conversely, merge with the overall interior palette.

The cover is sewn in various color and texture solutions, it can be knitted from yarn, have a long pile or plain, smooth surface- when you make ottomans bags with your own hands, there is no limit to the flight of fantasies.

Whatever style the room is decorated in, the presence of a pouffe bag will add sophistication, individuality and modernity to it, as well as emphasize the presence good taste house owners.

Filler - the secrets of the right choice

Despite the fact that at first glance the choice of filler for chairs may seem quite simple, in fact it is a bit different. In the vastness of Runet you can find various videos, in which you will be offered recycled polystyrene foam obtained as a result of processing defective or used foam products to fill the pear chair. Such expanded polystyrene is categorically not suitable for filling pouffes, as it has soft granules of a broken circle, which quickly shrink and crush.

For stuffing furniture, it is better to use primary polystyrene foam - its granules have an ideal round shape and have greater resistance to stress and deformation. The size of the balls of primary polystyrene foam can be of different sizes, but in our case it is better to use a diameter of 2 to 6 mm.

Granules with a diameter of 5-6 mm

Styrofoam beads help the chair hold its shape, adding stability to it. And in order not only to sew a bag chair, but also to provide it with the necessary softness, softening materials should be added to the filler - foam rubber crumb or holofiber. Foam rubber has a low cost and availability, but, at the same time, it quickly ages and turns into dust.

Baby foam

Concerning artificial down(holofiber) - his quality characteristics much higher. It passes air well, does not absorb odors, is hypoallergenic, does not accumulate dust, and is durable.

Furniture, the filler of which consists of a combined composition, including polystyrene foam and holofiber, will be much softer, more practical and more comfortable.

Tools and other materials

So, in order to sew a comfortable and stylish ottoman bag for one adult, with a diameter of about 85 cm, we need:

  1. Fabric of dense texture (linen, tapestry, velor, eco-leather, faux fur, etc.) for sewing an external removable cover 150 cm wide and 320 cm long.
  2. Filler - volume of at least 0.5 - 1 cubic meter.
  3. Smooth, sliding, plain synthetic fabric for the inner bag 150x300 cm.
  4. Pattern paper - ideal option will become tracing paper.
  5. Two zippers 40 cm and 60 cm.
  6. Sewing machine.
  7. Reinforced threads.

Stages of work

We have presented a step-by-step step-by-step instruction with a photo will show you how to make an ottoman with your own hands at home. The proposed scheme contains all the exact dimensions of the patterns.

Cutting details

Before you start sewing a pear chair, you need to cut out the details of the pouffe (one small lower part for the base and six wedges for the chair itself) - draw them on paper, and then transfer them to the fabric for the inner bag and outer upholstery.

The location of the details on the fabric

Do not forget to mark the seam allowances - about 1.5 cm. Before you start sewing the patterns, you should process their inner edges.

Assembly

Sewing frameless chair begins with alternately sewing to each other all the wedges of the inner bag, leaving areas for the zipper. First, the six main parts are added in turn front side to each other and are chopped off with pins so that the fabric does not move out in different directions, and the sewing is even, after which they are sewn on a sewing machine. The bottom of the bag is sewn on last. A zipper is sewn into one of the wedges for easy filling of the filler and its renewal. By a similar principle, we sew the outer cover.

Tip: sew the inner bag first, and then start sewing the outer one. Thus, you can, having made mistakes that are not so critical for the interior, avoid them when making the outer upholstery, because it must be perfect.

After the covers are ready, you can start filling them. Two-thirds of the filler is poured into the inner bag, as if in a bag, then the zipper is tightly closed and the outer cover is put on top.

Dimensions for patterns of adult and child seats

The mattress known to everyone today is the idea of talented Italian designers Francisco Teodoro, Cesare Paolini and Piero Gatti. Now this designer chair has gained wide popularity in all corners of the world. Until now, it does not have an exact name - a bean bag chair, a pear chair, a pouf, a bean bag. Nevertheless, the essence remains unchanged - it is comfortable frameless furniture with soft filler, which even a novice seamstress can make with his own hands.

What is good frameless furniture

A feature of this type of furniture is the absence of a rigid frame. The classic variation looks like a drop (pear). The chair is a bag with a soft loose filler that imitates liquid. An effect is created similar to that if the inner cover were filled with water - the chair takes the shape of the human body and evenly distributes its weight.

After just two minutes of rest in such a chair, you can feel the relaxation of the back muscles and the removal of stress from the spine. Due to the low thermal conductivity of the filler - foam balls - an additional warming effect begins to be felt very quickly. Styrofoam works as a heat reflector and warms the seated person with the energy of his own body.

Traditional frameless chair has a pear shape

Today, frameless furniture designers are constantly looking for new solutions. There are already models on sale not only in a variety of sizes (for a child, for one or more adults), but also in shapes (tear-shaped, round, rectangular, in the form of fantasy figures). The most active child will easily warm up and fall asleep in the bean bag, not to mention the mother tired of everyday chores. Therefore, the desire to have such an accessory for relaxation at home is quite understandable. However, it is not necessary to rush to the store for it. Even novice craftswomen can sew a bean bag chair.

The main advantages of the bean bag chair include the following aspects:

  1. Loose filler increases the level of comfort of rest.
  2. Frameless furniture is safe because it does not have sharp corners, which allows it to be used in children's rooms. And environmentally friendly materials reduce the likelihood of allergies to zero.
  3. The chair is very practical, thanks to its low weight it can be easily moved during cleaning.
  4. Periodic washing of the removable cover is sufficient to maintain cleanliness.
  5. The bean bag will fit into any interior, it is enough to choose its external design correctly.

Important! If you are planning to repair and change the design, do not rush to throw out the old bean bag chair - just add filler to it, sew suitable case, and it will be the highlight of the new interior.

Tools and materials

Footage required material and the amount of filler varies depending on the dimensions of the conceived bin-bag.

In order to sew a medium-sized chair with a diameter of approximately 85 cm (for 1 adult), you will need:

1. Paper for building patterns, tracing paper or graph paper is best.
2. Fabric for sewing the inner cover - smooth synthetics. Cut length - 3 meters with a width of 150 cm. It is better to take light material unprinted so that it does not show through the outer case.

It is better to choose a sliding fabric so that the chair better takes the form of a seated person.

3. Dense (preferably furniture) fabric for an external removable cover. The length of the cut is 320 cm with a width of 150 cm. It should be a little larger so that the inner bag with filler fits easily into it.

When choosing a material, give preference to durable canvases. It is better to choose materials that are dense, resistant to abrasion and frequent washing. It can be linen, denim, tapestry, velor, phlox, faux fur and even eco-leather. Choose the color in accordance with the overall color scheme of the interior.

4. Two zippers with a length of 40 cm and 60 cm (for the inner and outer cover, respectively).
5. Filler. In this case, we take 0.5 cubic meters of foamed polystyrene with a crumb fraction of about 0.5 cm. You can buy it online or at any specialized hardware store.

The minimum packing of polystyrene is usually the 0.5 cubic meters we need. m.

6. Sewing machine, reinforced threads.
7. Chalk or pencil, ruler, pins.

Filler selection

Most often, manufacturers of frameless furniture use expanded polystyrene granules as a filler. Styrofoam balls are considered the most hygienic filler, as they do not absorb dirt, sweat and odors. This is especially true when the bean bag is used in public places (cafes, showrooms, lounge areas). Expanded polystyrene is non-hygroscopic, and insects will not start in it. In addition, this filler is the most affordable.

Styrofoam - best filler for frameless chair

For those who are looking for an environmentally friendly and natural alternative expanded polystyrene, it can be advised to choose materials such as:

  • horsehair;
  • wood shavings;
  • seeds, herbs, buckwheat husks;
  • peas, beans and beans, rice, millet;
  • wool, feathers or down.

However, when choosing an organic filler, it is worth considering that it will be possible to use such a chair only in a room with moderate humidity. Otherwise, the molding process may begin.

Important! Feathers and down can cause allergies.

If you decide to use sawdust pay attention to their quality. Before filling the bag, be sure to inspect the chips and remove all the chips, otherwise you risk getting splinters or scratches. It is better to use shavings from cedar. She has nice smell, which is famous for its healing properties and will repel insects.

It is also necessary to take into account that over time it will be necessary complete replacement or adding an additional portion of the filler, as it tends to crumple.

Pattern and step-by-step instructions for sewing with a photo

On the above pattern, there are two options for cutting the lower circle of the chair. The first option involves stitching the bottom of two semicircles, and the second - of four. You will need to cut out 6 side wedges, 1 top piece (hexagon), 1 handle piece, 2 or 4 bottom pieces from the fabric. We will sew the inner and outer covers at the same time.

7. Now fold the edge wedges on both blanks and baste. On the outer cover, sew the last side seam 40 cm from the top and 40 from the bottom (a little more than 40 cm will remain for sewing in the zipper). Repeat the operation for the inner cover, leaving about 35 cm for the zipper. Iron the seams.
8. Baste or pin zippers to the remaining unstitched sections on the workpieces. The center of the zipper should coincide with the center of the ironed seam, the extra length of the zipper can be freely located at the bottom of the future chair. Insert zippers. 3. Cut off the corner of the filler bag and tape the top edge of the funnel to the resulting hole with tape.
  4. Place the lower part of the funnel into the ajar inner cover and fill it with styrofoam granules. Close both zippers.

The funnel method will allow you to quickly and accurately fill the chair with filler.

Important! The filler should occupy approximately 2/3 of the volume of the inner cover.

The working methodology is generally the same as in the previous description: first, the details of the pattern are transferred to paper, then the fabric is cut and the details are sewn along all the basting lines. Follow the pattern: 3 pentagons are sewn to 1 hexagon “through the edge”.

All seams of the ball-chair should be as clear and even as possible. Otherwise, it may turn out to be asymmetrical and unsightly.

As a rule, such furniture, made in the factory, is not cheap. But even a novice craftswoman can make it on her own. This does not require any special skills or expensive materials.

Materials and tools

In order to sew a chair, you must first prepare the materials and tools that you will need in your work. These include:

Figure 2. An example of a finished pattern with dimensions.

  • paper for making patterns (tracing paper or graph paper);
  • fabric for covers;
  • 2 zippers (length 45 and 65 cm);
  • filler;
  • sewing machine;
  • sewing accessories (needles, pins, zipper foot, thread);
  • measuring instruments (measuring tape, ruler).

The bag chair consists of 2 covers, inner and outer. Its appearance is shown in Figure 1.

For the interior of the chair, it is necessary to choose a dense and sufficiently strong fabric. Otherwise, the filler may come out and the chair will become an inexhaustible source of garbage in your room. The choice of fabric for the outer cover depends entirely on your tastes, preferences and overall interior design. It can be furniture materials, such as tapestry or velor. Looks good faux fur, velvet. For a children's room, a bright chair, decorated with bright patterns, is suitable.

When choosing a material, it is worth remembering that the bag chair is located on the floor. Therefore, it is worth giving preference to non-staining, easy-care fabrics or sewing spare covers. For a product intended for an adult, you will need approximately 3.5-4 m of each type of material. In this case, it is worth considering that the outer cover should be slightly larger than the inner one.

Foamed foam is suitable as a filler for a chair. It will need approximately 0.25 m 2. When choosing and purchasing material, it is worth remembering that it is sold in very bulky packages (about 0.5 m 2 each). Therefore, it is more reasonable to order the delivery of the filler.

pattern making

The pattern for the chair consists of such details as:

Figure 3. The layout of the pattern on the fabric

  • wedges - 6 pcs.;
  • top detail - 1 pc.;
  • the middle part of the base - 1 pc.;
  • side elements of the base - 2 pcs.

An example of a finished pattern with all required dimensions shown in fig. 2.

First you need to prepare a pattern of wedges (since they are the same). In the example diagram, the height of the parts is 1200 mm, and the width of the bottom is 450 cm. The width of the upper part must match the length of the side of the hexagon, which is the “lid”, that is, in this case it is 210 mm.

In order for the bag chair to turn out symmetrical, the pattern can be made half. Only one part of the part is built on paper (the element seems to be cut along), and the left and right sides are alternately drawn on the fabric.

The bottom consists of 4 parts. It is necessary to prepare a pattern for the upper and middle parts of the bottom. Moreover, 2 separate upper parts are cut out (in mirror image). But the middle part can be cut as 1 element (first the left, and then the right part).

We match all the marked points arbitrarily, connecting them in turn with a smooth line.

Cutting fabrics and sewing

The bag chair should be sewn sequentially. That is, first cut the inner cover and only then take on the outer one. So you do not get confused in the blanks.

Spread the fabric wrong side up on the floor. Lay out all the details of the pattern. Approximate scheme their location is shown in Fig. 3.

When planning the cut, do not forget about the seam allowances.

Since they will all be inside the product, they can be made equal to 1.5-2 cm. Next, all the details of the pattern need to be circled. To do this, use a piece of chalk or dry soap. Do not forget that some elements need to be flipped and mirrored.

If you have a good eye, then the wedges that make up the bag chair do not have to be cut out separately. You can fold the fabric 6 times and cut it with equal allowances. In order for the pattern not to move, pin it with pins.

When cutting the top cover, follow the direction of the grain thread and the pile of the fabric. Flip pattern to different directions it is impossible, otherwise the product will turn out to be deformed, and the pattern of the material will be located in different directions. Then your bag chair will look sloppy.

In order to sew a chair, you will need only 3-4 hours. First, the details of the inner cover are ground. The details of the wedges are chipped in pairs, outside inside, and grind off. In one of the seams, it is necessary to leave a pass for sewing in a zipper.

Then the bottom of the bag is formed and stitched to the base. The last thing you need to fix the "lid". The finished product is turned inside out and the clasp is sewn in. The easiest way to do this is with a special foot for sewing machines. The upper cover is made in the same way.

For the final formation of the product, you need to fill the inner cover with filler. It does not need to be tamped or laid too tightly. The bag chair should be soft and easily take the shape of the human body. If desired, the product can be decorated. Beautiful braid, fringe, brushes and the like are suitable for this. Baby chair decorate with sewn applications, embroidery or small soft toys.

Outwardly, the bean bag looks like a mattress. But under the pressure of human weight it takes comfortable shape. In this case, the spine relaxes, and the person becomes comfortable. Below are options for using frameless furniture in the interior and a master class on making it yourself.

Advantages and disadvantages of frameless furniture

Such furniture has gained popularity due to many advantages:

  • mobility;
  • high comfort;
  • security;
  • budget price.

The covers are easy to wash and change, allowing you to quickly change the interior of the room and adapt to any design project.

The disadvantages include the need for frequent cleaning of the cover due to the lack of legs, the inability to use in classic interiors and the risk of tearing due to the "warfare" of a child or pet.

Although such furniture is inexpensive, it is more economical to make it yourself. This process is simple, and allows you to make a bean bag chair according to individual taste and size.

What fabric to choose

Frameless furniture consists of two covers. For internal version it is necessary to choose a dense and practical fabric. It can be raincoat or mattress textiles, preferably on a natural basis. But at the same time, the fabric should not sit down, otherwise the outer cover will then wrinkle.

If you are not sure about the shrink properties, wash and iron the fabric before cutting.

For an external case, not only practicality and durability are important, but also an attractive appearance. Ideal furniture fabrics:

  • Oxford. The fabric has an anti-claw effect and water repellency. Durable artificial fibers of polyester and nylon form a density up to 600den. Durable fabric is easy to care for. The disadvantages include the tendency to accumulate static electricity and instability to high temperatures.
  • Faux leather PU. Modern polymer material is affordable and excellent performance quality. The fabric is not afraid of frost, elastic and resistant to mechanical stress, has no smell. PU artificial leather has practically no drawbacks, therefore it is actively used in the production of frameless furniture.
  • Flock. Durable wear resistant furniture fabric with water repellent effect. The basis of the fabric is cotton and polyester, the surface is velvety. Good breathability, resistant to pet claws. It is recommended to place furniture made of flock fabric away from heat sources and use a manual wash mode at a temperature not exceeding 40 ⁰C.
  • Velor Corduroy. Corduroy - modern material obtained by innovative technologies. The fabric has a velvet effect, is elastic, can withstand pet claws and is abrasion resistant. In care, it is not recommended to use cleaning products based on strong chemicals, wring out and subject to any rough mechanical impact.
  • Leather. Luxurious and expensive natural material It has a high degree wear resistance and practicality. Genuine leather is breathable and resistant to temperature changes. Caring for this material is simple, the skin is well cleaned of dust and dirt, and retains a presentable appearance for a long time.
  • Chenille. Wear-resistant fabric has a delicate velvety surface. The composition of the material is natural, synthetic and artificial. Soft and elastic chenille resembles velor, but its cost is lower. The disadvantages include the possibility of the appearance of hooks on the fabric.
  • Jacquard. The strong uniform structure of the fabric makes it practical and durable. Jacquard lets air through, as it contains cotton fibers. The material is not sensitive to temperature changes, but it is better to wash it in cool water. Fabric production requires high costs, therefore jacquard belongs to the elite type and has a high price.

It is better to cover outdoor chairs with covers made of Oxford material - it has water-repellent impregnation and resistant to pollution.

Filler

Connoisseurs of eco-materials offer to fill such bags wood chips, natural down or leguminous crops. These options are environmentally friendly, but the product requires careful care so that the filling does not get wet, moldy or rot. In addition, such a filler is very fond of rodents.

It is better to use expanded polystyrene balls as a filler.

This material is harmless to the environment and health, durable, not afraid of moisture, fireproof and retains heat well. The only negative can be considered that with incorrectly selected sizes of balls, the product will be harsh. It is necessary to choose granules no more than 5 mm in diameter. 300 liters is the minimum amount for a chair. Synthetic down adds extra softness.

How to calculate the dimensions for a pattern

The diameter of the bean bag varies from 70 to 130 cm. The average product is about 90 cm in diameter and 1.2 m in height. Each cover will require approximately 2.5 m of fabric with a width of 120–140 cm. For a child the pattern and the amount of fabric decreases proportionally, and if you want to make a mini-sofa, it increases. Here are the product patterns different shapes:
