Action pink pearl. Deytsiya - oriental beauty: planting and care. In the photo, the action is hybrid

Deytion is a flowering ornamental shrub from the Hydrangea family. In nature, it can be found in Mexico, as well as in Japan and China. Plants with a slender vertical or more spreading crown effectively green the area. In spring and summer, they are covered with flowers for a long time, for which the action received the name " Oriental beauty". Deytion is great for single plantings in the garden, creating a hedge or decorating a recreation area near gazebos and benches. Caring for a plant is not difficult at all. With minimal effort, it pleases with lush vegetation and delicate flowers, therefore it is a welcome acquisition for many gardeners.

plant description

Deutsia is a perennial deciduous shrub that is 0.5-4 m in height. Its life span is about 25 years and shoots increase up to 25 cm in length every year. Lateral shoots are formed from the ground itself. The plant prefers to live on moist soils among forest glades or on the slopes of low hills.

action rhizome mixed type. It combines 1-2 long rod processes, which are surrounded by fibrous roots in the upper part. The branched stems are covered with smooth dark brown bark. On old branches, the thin bark peels off in plates, which, like tatters, hang from the branches. This is not a sign of any disease. The branches are hollow inside, so they do not have strength and easily break from the load.

The shoots are covered with opposite petiolate oval or ovoid leaves. A smooth, rigid sheet plate of bright green color has a slightly pronounced relief pattern of veins and serrated edges. Leaves turn yellowish-brown in autumn.

In late spring, lush racemose inflorescences bloom on the shoots of last year. They consist of small bisexual flowers 1-2 cm in diameter. Each corolla has a double perianth and 5 oblong, pointed petals. The core consists of long stamens and an ovary. There are varieties with simple and double flowers. Their petals are painted in white, pink, purple or crimson. Some flowers are double colored with a contrasting center.

Flowering lasts up to two months, it is accompanied by an almost imperceptible pleasant aroma. Over time, in place of pollinated flowers, spherical seed pods ripen. When ripe, they crack on their own and release the smallest seeds. Some ornamental cultivars are sterile and may not set fruit.

Species diversity

According to international classification the action genus includes 72 species. Some of the species are especially popular.

Spreading shrub up to 2.5 m tall grows thin branches that tend to the ground. The old bark peels off on them. The shoots are covered with petiolate oval leaves with a thin elongated ending. The size of the foliage is 3-8 cm, sparse short hairs are located on its surface. The plant blooms by mid-June with small white flowers collected in loose brushes up to 12 cm long. Varieties:

  • Terry - blooms beautiful double-colored double-colored flowers, outer bracts have pink shade, and inside are snow-white petals;
  • Vaterera - double flowers outside are painted carmine, and inside they are white;
  • White-dotted - dark green leaves are covered with small white spots.

Plants live on the mountain slopes of Japan. A shrub 50-150 cm high has a rounded crown with thin, arched branches. The pointed oblong leaves are painted in light green color. Their length is 6 cm. At the end of July, the bush is abundantly covered with simple flowers, collected in numerous brushes 9-15 cm long. Flowering lasts more than a month.

This group of plants combines intraspecific hybrids. The most interesting of them:

  • Strawberry Fields. Spreading shrub up to 1.5 m high is covered with pointed dark green leaves. Large pink flowers bloom in June-July.
  • Action is great. A slender plant up to 2.5 m high consists of slightly branched shoots covered with red or dark brown bark. Above the elongated dark green leaves in July, large double white flowers bloom. They are collected in paniculate inflorescences up to 10 cm long.
  • Action pink. A tall spreading shrub up to 2.5 m in height is densely covered with dark green broad-oval leaves, which turn yellow-red in autumn. In June-July, pink double flowers bloom.
  • Pink Pom Pom. A low, but very sprawling shrub with branches bent to the ground throughout the summer is abundantly covered with large white and pink flowers. They look like wide bells. Under the flowers is a dark green rough foliage oval or elongated.

Reproduction methods

The action is propagated by seeds and vegetatively. Seeds are sown before winter immediately in open ground. In the spring, the first shoots appear. Care for them is the same as for an adult plant. For the winter, it is necessary to cover the seedlings more carefully. nonwoven fabric and spruce branches, as they are very sensitive to frost. Action blooms 3 years after sowing. The method is not so popular, because many ornamental varieties do not produce viable seeds.

Most often, the action is propagated by cuttings. Green cuttings 20-25 cm long are cut in early June. Immediately after cutting, the lower leaves are removed and the shoots are kept in the Kornevin solution. Landing is carried out in containers with sandy-peat soil mixed with humus. It is moistened and deepened by branches at an angle of 5-10 mm. Landings are covered with a transparent cap and exposed to the street. As they take root, the shelters are removed, but for the winter the plants are brought into a greenhouse to protect them from frost. For next spring, they plan to transplant into open ground.

When propagated by lignified cuttings, branches 15-20 cm long are cut at the end of autumn. They are tied into small bundles, sprinkled with sand and stored in a cold greenhouse until spring. In March-April, the cuttings are planted in open ground at an angle and covered with foil. When the roots appear and the buds begin to bloom, the shelter is removed.

You can use the withdrawal method. Bending the lower shoots to the ground, sprinkle them with soil. To make the roots form sooner, you can put a few scratches on the bark. next spring rooted cuttings are cut off from mother plant and transplanted to permanent place.

Landing and care

Deytion is planted in open ground from April to June. For her, well-lit places are selected without strong gusts of wind. Bushes are afraid of drafts. It is good if a shadow falls on the bush at noon. The soil should be nutritious and well-drained, but not too dry. Before planting, the earth is dug up and peat, compost and humus are introduced. Sand is added to too heavy, clayey soils. Acidity should be neutral or slightly acidic; slaked lime is added to acidic soils.

A planting hole is dug in proportion to the rhizome of the seedling. Its approximate depth is about 50 cm. Crushed stone and sand are poured into the bottom. Straighten the roots and fill the free space with soil mixture. The root neck should remain on the surface. At group landings the distance between plants should be 2.5 m. The same amount should remain before any building. After planting, the soil is compacted and watered. It is better to immediately mulch the surface with peat.

Watering. Young plants need regular watering. As it grows, drought tolerance increases. In the absence of precipitation, a bucket of water is poured weekly under the bush. After watering, it is recommended to loosen the soil. Since autumn, irrigation is reduced, preparing plants for wintering.

Fertilizer. In the spring, a solution of compost, ash and rotted manure is added under each bush. During the flowering period, fertilizer is produced twice more with a mineral complex. Later fertilizers are not needed.

Pruning. To give the bush a shape, pruning is carried out. The plant tolerates this procedure very well. In the spring, frozen and dry branches are removed. Remove up to 25% vegetation. When flowering is over, you can remove some of the young shoots and old branches for thinning. In autumn, molding pruning is carried out due to young shoots. If you remove last year's branches, you can lose flowering next year.

Rejuvenation. Old thick bushes can be completely rejuvenated every 5-8 years. To do this, cut off all the ground parts in the fall, leaving only small stumps. In May, young shoots will appear, the development of which also needs to be controlled. Flowering after rejuvenation occurs in 2-3 years.

Wintering. Deitia prefers warm winters and can withstand only slight frosts. If the temperature drops to -20°C, the entire shoot may freeze. Low bushes try to bend down more strongly in the ground, cover with non-woven material, spruce branches and dry foliage. After they are spudded to a height of 15-20 cm. As snow falls, it is thrown on top of the bush. Such a cover serves as an excellent protection against frost. Old stiff branches are easy to break, so they are tied vertically and propped up. From above, the plant is covered with lutrasil. In April, when the frost subsides, the shelter can be removed and the snow scattered further from the trunk so that the bushes do not rot when flooded.

Action in the garden

Beautiful cascading thickets, abundantly covered with white and pink flowers, are used in single plantings or in groups - in the form of hedges. Dwarf varieties are suitable for mixborders and alpine slides. Tall, spreading bushes are planted near arbors or near the house as a spectacular solo plant. Deytion goes well with evergreen shrubs and conifers (rhododendron, terry kerria).

A well-known researcher of Chinese flora, E. Wilson, among the aristocrats of the garden - roses, lilacs, hydrangeas, also named action.

Landing and care open ground for spectacular ornamental shrub is complicated by the fact that in temperate latitudes, with significant drops in winter temperature, the plant is heavily frosted over.

However, domestic gardeners and northern regions successfully grow action by choosing suitable varieties and guided completely simple secrets agricultural technology.

Thanks to the Dutch merchants at the beginning of the 19th century flowering shrub came to Europe from its native habitats in Japan and the Himalayas.

Chinese actions were brought later - in mid-nineteenth century. The name of the plant was given in honor of the then mayor of Amsterdam, I. van Deutz, who in every possible way contributed to trade relations with the countries of Southeast Asia.

In the genus Deutzia of the Hydrangea family, there are 72 species of deciduous or evergreen shrubs with a spreading or erect crown, reaching a height of 50 cm to 4 m. The leaves are simple, arranged oppositely along the pagons.

The main distinguishing feature of plants is lush and long flowering, which begins at the end of May and lasts almost the entire June.

The flowers of the action are graceful, in some cultivars they are bell-shaped, like lilies of the valley, - snow-white, pale pink or lilac-purple, grouped in a few lateral or apical inflorescences.

Unfortunately, almost devoid of flavor. The fruits are small, almost spherical capsules.

Types and varieties of action with names and photos

In the gardens of temperate latitudes, the most winter-hardy varieties are grown, which, with very little shelter and care for them, are able to delight the eye with their delightful attire.

Action Amur, or small-flowered (D. amurensis, or D. parviflora)

A large shrub almost 2 m high with a spreading crown that requires considerable space.

It blooms in mid-June and attracts bees with a barely perceptible aroma of snow-white flowers.

After withering, the corollas look a little sloppy, so experienced gardeners advised to cut it off.

The species is grown even in the northern Moscow region, although it freezes pretty much in severe frosts, but it soon recovers.

It is especially beautiful against the background of conifers with a silver-blue crown.

Deytion long-leaved (D.longifolia)

Shrub with narrower long leaves compared to other actions, and large corymbose pinkish inflorescences in a typical species.

Varieties also come with snow-white flowers, but Veitchii is especially beautiful with unusual bright lilac petals.

Hybrid action, or Lemoine action (deutzia hybrida, or D. lemoinei Lemoine)

Shrubs obtained from crossing deutsia long-leaved, graceful and small-leaved.

Their height varies between 1.5-2.5 m.

Inflorescences are long - up to 10 cm, bloom earlier natural species- already in May, it is quite frost-resistant in temperate latitudes.

Boulle-de-neig varieties with snow-white bunches of inflorescences are popular, as well as Mont Rose with white-crimson petals, slightly twisted, as if corrugated, and Pink Pom-Pom (Pink Pom-Pom) with bright pink double flowers.

Deutzia hybrida Strawberry Fields (deutzia hybrida Strawberry Fields)

Spreading plant about 2 m high with brown shoots covered with dark green oval-lanceolate leaves.

Bright crimson large flowers bloom in June.

Deutzia graceful (deutzia gracilis) - the species really confirms its name.

Gracefully curving under the weight of white inflorescences already in early June, it looks like a huge snow globe.

And after flowering, it looks impressive with slightly wrinkled pointed leaves, slightly serrate at the edges, especially the Aurea forms with golden emerald foliage no higher than 80 cm - a real find for an alpine hill, and Albo-marmorata with light, almost light green leaves, decorated with a yellow pattern from spots.

Deytion graceful Nikko (D. gracilis Nikko)

Undersized shrub no more than 70 cm tall. The foliage is dark emerald in summer, turning into a festive purple-cherry outfit by autumn.

The flowers are pure white, grouped in racemes, formed on last year's shoots.

Deytion pink (D. rosea)

A hybrid of deutsia graceful with wider foliage and pale pink inflorescences.

Rough action (deutzia scabra) - differs from its relatives in the rough surface of the leaf blades.

This species has the largest number of varieties with pink petals, but it has significant drawbacks - very high growth- almost 3 m, which complicates the shelter of the action for the winter and, accordingly, the winter hardiness of the shrub.

It blooms late - in July for 14-20 days, but the flowers are without aroma.

The best varieties of rough action:

  • Candidissima Candidissima - with pure white terry corollas;
  • Action Plena Plena - double flowers are pink on the outside, snow-white inside;
  • White-dotted, or Punctata Punctata - the corollas are simple and pale white, but the foliage is unusual - on an emerald background, random light specks;
  • Marble Marmorata - with an incredibly painted pattern on the foliage, consisting of a variety of lemon and white spots.

Action rough Pride of Rochester (D. scabra Pride of Rochester)

Beautiful deciduous shrub with spherical crown almost 2 m high.

The leaves are dark emerald in color, ovate in shape, rough to the touch.

Flowering begins in June and continues until July. Corollas are medium-sized, terry, snow-white with a subtle pinkish tinge.

The action is magnificent(D. magnifica) - a powerful shrub, a hybrid descendant of a rough action almost 2 m tall with a rich green crown and wide inflorescences, in some varieties somewhat elongated in the longitudinal direction, always white.

The corollas are the most diverse in shape - they are terry and ordinary, bell-shaped and flat, and open at the end of June.

Action magnificent Tourbillon Rouge (Tourbillon Rouge)

A picturesque plant with rich green foliage, in harmony with red-orange bark.

The flower petals are bright pink at the base, gradually turning into a light pink shade, and the edges are outlined in white edging.

Action purple(D. purpurascens) - a shrub with flexible, slightly pubescent brown shoots from 60 cm to 2 m high.

The leaf blades are thin, broadly lanceolate or ovate, finely serrated along the edge and rarely pubescent on both sides. Whisks with outer side bright pink-purple, inside - snow-white.

Deutsia purple Kalmiflora (D. purpurascens Kalmiiflora)

small deciduous plant with spectacular arcuately inclined pagons from 1.2 to 1.5 m high.

Gaining growth relatively quickly.

The foliage is deep green, lighter on the underside.

Blooms profusely in June pink flowers outside and pale pink inside. Corolla circumference up to 2 cm, in inflorescence up to 5-12 pieces.

Methods of propagation of action

Species shrubs are propagated in various ways, but varietal shrubs are propagated only vegetatively, since harvested seeds do not always retain the characteristics of the mother plant, but often show the features of its predecessors.

cuttings

For rooting use green or lignified cuttings.

Greens are cut in June from powerful and healthy shoots, their lower edge is dusted with a root formation stimulator, for example, root, and buried in a peat-sand mixture, which is filled with cuttings.

Place them in a moderately lit place and support high humidity environment through frequent spraying.

Under all conditions, almost 85% of the cuttings take root.

Lignified cuttings are cut off late in the fall, tied into bunches and completely sprinkled with wet sand. Store them in a cold basement until spring.

With the advent of heat, they are planted directly on the garden bed, or in the month of March they treat them in the same way as when rooting green cuttings.

The division of the bush

At the end of March or in early April, when the soil in the garden completely thaws, the plant is completely dug up and divided into several parts: the larger they are, the better they take root.

At the same time, old shoots that thicken the crown are removed.

Transfer to a new place immediately, preventing the roots from drying out. The hole is prepared in advance, taking into account all the nuances of planting adult specimens.

Sowing seeds

The seed material of action does not need stratification. They can be sown for seedlings from February to April inclusive.

Tanks for crops are filled with a light fertile mixture consisting of peat, humus soil and coarse-grained river sand, taken in equal volumes.

The seeds are laid out on top, deepening no more than 0.5 cm, sprinkled with a thin layer of sand.

The bowl is covered with plastic wrap and placed on a warm windowsill. Seeds of action are also sown in greenhouses with artificial heating, glass or film.

It is important to maintain a constant moisture content of the soil mixture; drying out of the soil affects the percentage of germination.

The first shoots appear after a month or a half. In the stage of several well-developed true leaves, they dive directly into the open ground.

Reproduction by layering and root shoots

If the shrub has given root offspring, in the spring they can be carefully separated and transplanted.

Gardeners consider this method the most gentle for mother bush, but unproductive - plants from shoots are not so lush and bloom more poorly.

A fairly common method of propagation of action by layering. To do this, in the fall, they bend a healthy pagon, located in the lower part of the crown of the bush, to the ground itself and fix it with a wire bracket.

A mound of soil is poured on top, if the days are dry, they are watered.

By spring, the plant releases well-developed roots, and the layers are cut off from the mother plant and transplanted into a separately prepared hole.

When and how to transplant

The shrub is valued not only for its elegant appearance, but also for its ability to withstand gas and smoke, endure the lack of moisture, and also for the ease of rooting after transplantation.

Choosing a place and the right time for landing action

An ideal site for planting shrubs - protected on all sides from blowing snow in winter.

Heat-loving varieties, especially adult specimens, which are already problematic to tilt to the ground and cover, are seriously frosted over in temperate latitudes above the snow cover.

The action is not too demanding on the composition of the soil, but drainage in waterlogged areas is required.

It is made of crushed stone with sand, broken brick or expanded clay.

The best time to transplant a plant is spring.

Although it is believed that the action responds seamlessly to transplant work, shrubs planted at the beginning of the growing season take root faster and look more magnificent.

How to choose, prepare seedlings and plant them

In most regions located north of the Chernozem region, only winter-hardy species and varieties of action - Amur, rough, elegant and hybrid.

In terms of resistance to cold, the long-leaved is not inferior to them, but this species is still very rare.

It is difficult to cultivate the beautiful action of Vilmorin, because even under cover the plant does not withstand winters with 20-degree frosts.

When choosing a seedling, pay attention to root system.

The plant does not take root well if the roots are too dry or the seedling is dug up with a very short root system, especially with a very chopped central root.

In this case, the shrub will begin to build up fibrous roots for a long time, and will not develop the aerial part.

There should also be no damaged or rotten areas on the roots.

The presence of all these shortcomings on the root system increases the risk of bringing a serious problem to your site along with an unhealthy plant.

Actions are planted at a distance of at least 1.5-2 m between adjacent bushes.

It is necessary to adhere to such a distance not only in order to provide the recommended nutrition area for each plant, but also to facilitate the fixing of the shoots for the winter, tilting to the soil.

Pits are dug at least 55 cm deep, 40 cm in diameter is enough.

One or two buckets of a mixture of coarse-grained river sand and compost are poured onto the bottom in a ratio of 1:5.

As a top dressing for young seedlings, some gardeners add nitrophoska, others add a half-liter jar of wood ash, and the mineral complex is applied 2-3 months after rooting.

The root neck is placed at the level of the soil.

The newly planted bushes of deutsia are watered abundantly and the soil in the near-stem circle is mulched with a layer of 5 cm of peat, sawdust or dry grass.

Garden action care

Weeds are removed around the bushes and at the same time the earth is loosened to a depth of 10-15 cm.

Watering, fertilizing and mulching

In hot summers, plants are watered twice or thrice a month, pouring one and a half to two buckets of water under each bush.

In normal weather, watering is more rare - once a month. For each bush, it is enough to pour 8-10 liters of water.

Humidification stops in August. If September is too rainy, the circle around the trunk is covered with a film to allow the wood of the branches to mature and grow stronger.

After a dry and warm September, water-charging irrigation is carried out in early October.

Young plants are fertilized after planting after 2 months with a solution of mineral fertilizers at the rate of 5 liters for each bush.

They use, for example, Crystal, which contains easily accessible phosphorus.

Adult shrubs in the spring bring a bucket of mullein infusion or humus into the near-stem circle. The last to be fed again after the end of flowering.

With the advent of August, 200 g of wood ash will need to be added under each bush.

After pruning, they fertilize with a mineral complex, for example, Kemira-universal is used at a dose of 100 g per 1 sq. m.

In areas where autumn frosts occur early, deytion is fertilized only until mid-July to allow the plants to finish the growing season and prepare for wintering.

Trimming action

Overwintered bushes are straightened, all damaged shoots are removed.

Too thick bushes are thinned out, the old ones are cut into a stump.

After flowering, flower stalks are cut off and at the same time faded shoots are shortened, stimulating the development of young branches, on which buds are massively formed next season.

Attention! All actions form peduncles only on last year's shoots.

Old branches give poor flowering, so the haircut after the peduncles wither especially has great importance for future budding.

Actions grown in hedges are rarely pruned.

Preparing for the winter

The plant is prepared for winter in two stages.

With the advent of September, they spud the root neck with dry fallen leaves and gradually bend the branches to the soil, securing them with wire staples.

Varietal actions are highly spudded with earth and only after that do they tilt the shoots to the ground.

In October, all shrubs are securely covered with spruce branches.

In winter, they make sure that all the branches are under the snow, if there is not enough snow, they are thrown from the cleared paths.

In the spring, they remove the shelter only after the final melting of the snow.

Diseases and pests

Occasionally, the appearance of a bumblebee proboscis is observed, eating leaf blades. The shrub is sprayed with phthalophos 0.15% concentration.

A healthy state of action can only be threatened by flooding with water during heavy rainfall in the absence of proper drainage in the area.

Actions are incredibly picturesque plants, a real decoration of any garden.

Their undersized varieties are planted in borders and rock gardens, the rest are excellent tapeworms against the background of conifers or grown in groups among the lawn or along garden paths, they look great in hedges.

We recommend to know:

Family: hydrangeas (Hydrangeaceae).

Homeland: East and South Asia.

The form: deciduous shrub.

Description

The genus includes about 50 species. Deutsia is a flowering deciduous shrub with a spreading or vertical crown from 0.5 to 4 m tall. Leaves usually opposite, ovate or lanceolate, hard, pale green; autumn yellowish, orange or bronze. The flowers of action are white, pink or purple, odorless, collected in racemose inflorescences. Inflorescences - brushes or small panicles on lateral shoots. The plant blooms on the shoots of last year, in late spring-early summer. Actions are valued for their abundant and bright bloom. Actions are growing rapidly; suitable for urban environments.

Action rough , or stellate (D. scabra). Graceful upright shrub up to 2.5 m tall, flowering somewhat later than other species. The bark of action is rough, or stellate, reddish or gray-brown, extending in layers. Leaves oblong-ovate, pubescent, rough; dark, yellow-brown in autumn. The flowers of the action rough are white or pinkish. Flowering begins in July - early August. It is better to plant this species in places protected from the wind. In nature, the action rough grows in Japan and China.

(D. gracilis). A small rounded shrub up to 1.5 m tall with thin arcuate branches. The leaves of the graceful action are oblong-lanceolate, pointed, unequally serrate, pubescent on the upper side up to 6 cm long; turn yellow in autumn. Flowers numerous, white, up to 2 cm in diameter. The flowers are collected in panicles or brushes up to 10 cm long. Flowering begins in July. In nature, graceful action is common in the mountainous regions of Japan.

Deytion longifolia (D. longifolia) has narrower and longer leaves than graceful action. Inflorescence corymbose, wide. The typical form has pink flowers on the outside, but there are varieties with pure white and pink flowers.

Action is the most elegant (D. x elegantissima) - shrub about 1 m tall. The leaves are wide, with pointed ends, dark. The flowers of the most elegant deutsia are pink on the outside, white on the inside. Inflorescences are lush multi-flowered racemes in the axils of the upper leaves. There are varieties with flowers from white to dark pink.

The action is magnificent , or lush (hybrid action) (D. x magnifica). A hybrid of the action rough and the action of Vilmorin. Upright shrub up to 2.5 m tall. Under the weight of the flowers, the branches of the magnificent action bend in an arcuate manner. The leaves of the plant are oblong-ovate, bright green. The flowers of the action are magnificent terry, white, collected in large inflorescences. Dissolves at the end of June.

or small-colored (D. amurensis). Shrub with spreading branches up to 2 m tall. The bark of the Amur deutsia is initially brown, later gray. The leaves are elliptical, finely serrate, pointed, pubescent; brown-yellow in autumn. The flowers are numerous, white, up to 1 cm in diameter, collected in corymbose inflorescences. In nature, the action of the Amur is found in the Far East, in China, North Korea.

Growing conditions

Actions are photophilous, can grow with some shading, but do not bloom so profusely. However, in partial shade they bloom a little longer. The plants are absolutely undemanding to the type of soil; they grow best on fertile, drained, moist substrates containing lime. In general, the action is winter-hardy, but in severe winters the shoots can freeze slightly. Actions are quickly restored, but at temperatures below -30 ° C, the plants freeze completely.

Application

Like any flowering plants, actions will always find their place on suburban area. Tall actions are used as, in group plantings, free-growing hedges; undersized species and varieties - in , . Amur action is good for down trees.

Care

Action in hot and dry summers may suffer due to high temperatures and drought; shrubs are watered 2-3 times a month, 15-20 liters for each plant. With a normal rainfall, the action is watered less and less frequently. For better flowering, plants are recommended to be fertilized (in spring). The action is loosened shallowly, while removing weeds. Young plants are needed. After flowering, the action must be cut off for better growth and development of the plant, as well as giving it beautiful shape. Frozen shoots are removed in early June. As necessary, thinning and rejuvenating are carried out (in July); thickening of the plant should not be allowed, and old and dry branches should also be removed in time. In action, they do not cut. For the winter, young actions should be covered with a leaf, and the lower branches should be bent to the ground and covered with earth or snow. Since the shoots of adult action (above 1 m tall) break when bent, the plants are covered with a special material.

reproduction

Actions are propagated both by seeds and vegetatively (, root offspring, lignified and green). Sowing is carried out in the spring without prior; seeds are not buried in the ground. Of the vegetative methods, green cuttings are most often used. Cuttings are harvested in the second half of June until the beginning of July. For the winter, young plantings must be covered.

Diseases and pests

Actions are resistant to diseases and pests. Occasionally they can be affected by the bumblebee proboscis.

Popular varieties

Varieties of action long-leaved

‘Veitchii’. Differs in large inflorescences with bright purple flowers.

A charming representative of the hydrangea family has relatively recently settled on the sites of Russian gardeners, but has already gained enviable popularity. The article is devoted to tips for caring for this the most beautiful plant and a description of its most popular varieties.

In botany, action is an evergreen perennial shrub native to the forests of East Asia and the Himalayas. To date, there are about 50 varieties of this plant, which can adapt not only to the conditions of Japanese and Chinese gardens, but also to temperate latitudes.

You can recognize the action by a vertical or weeping crown with spreading branches, reaching a length of 40 cm to 4 m. Since the plant belongs to perennials, the old bark tends to gradually peel off. The leaves of the shrub are simple and whole, less often - with jagged edges. Action has a powerful tap root system.

Sometimes the action is confused with honeysuckle, but not during the flowering period: white, pink or purple odorless double flowers give out the origin of the beauty. The buds of perennial flowers are laid on the shoots of the previous year and are located on the tops in lush inflorescences, abundantly covering the crown and bending the branches to the ground with their weight. Deytion blooms for a long time: from 30 to 60 days; the period of flowering and its beginning vary depending on the area in which the action grows. As a rule, the shrub lives up to 25 years, during which it repeatedly bears fruit in spherical "boxes" with seeds.

Despite the many advantages, the Asian shrub also has whims: the action can die from winter frosts when the temperature reaches -30 ° C. In addition, branches that are above the snow level very often freeze slightly. To prevent a sad outcome, you can plant it on a gentle southwestern slope, since usually a dense snow cover forms in such places.

Options for using shrubs in garden decor

Thanks to its stunning flowering, the perennial is popular in landscape design. Flora researchers have repeatedly noticed the properties of action, putting it on a par with roses, hydrangeas and lilacs. Dwarf varieties are placed in border compositions and mixborders or about tall trees as padding, and large varieties are planted in groups along paths. A single plant looks good in combination with conifers trees.

In mild climates, perennial can be used as a hedge. One of the main advantages of such a "green wall" is its immunity to smoke, so plants that perform a similar function are usually planted in front of city houses located near the roadway.

Ideal neighbors for action will be forsythia and bright pink weigela: the original composition with one hundred percent probability will become the main decoration of the garden. Hybrid varieties bred by breeders with double flowers and incredible sized inflorescences will allow you to create a stylized garden in Eastern traditions. For example, the Turbillon Rouge variety has bright pink flowers with a white border, reminiscent of sakura flowers in shape.

One of the most unusual uses action in the garden is the use of shrubs as the basis for garden sculptures. Due to the strong, but flexible frame of thin trunks and branches, the plant has a good texture.

Characteristics of types and varieties of action

As a result of many years of efforts of researchers-breeders, many various kinds and ornamental cultivars. Cultivated varieties differ in height, shape of the crown and flowers, as well as the shade of the inflorescences.

Action whitest

A magnificent hybrid plant, reaching a height of 2 meters, is decorated with snow-white lush inflorescences (3 cm in diameter and 12 cm in length) in the first half summer season. With proper care the average life expectancy does not differ from the maternal variety: from 20 to 25 years.

Action whitest

Deutzia Lemoine

The variety was bred by crossing deytsii graceful and Amur. Height - 1 meter, shoots - arched stems, covered with greenish-gray leaves, acquiring beautiful yellow and red hues in autumn. The inflorescences are pyramidal, formed by graceful white flowers. Gardeners will also be interested in other subspecies of this hybrid, for example, Mont Rose, which is characterized by bright pink flowers with wrapped petals, or Strawberry Fields(Strawberry meadow) with an unusual raspberry-pink color of flowers.

Deutzia Lemoine

Deutsia Amur

Another name is small-colored. A two-meter deciduous perennial blooms beautifully in mid-summer: against the background of bright green pubescent leaves, small, odorless white flowers bloom. The variety is finicky and requires special conditions of light and air humidity, however, it is the most frost-resistant species compared to the rest. Technology and timing of planting plants in open ground

Before planting a plant in your area, you need to purchase seedlings and choose a good place.

At the time of buying planting material you should carefully examine the seedling and check if its roots and branches are damaged: for this you need to focus on specimens with an open root system. Broken branches are cut off, and the dried rhizome is lowered for a couple of hours into a weak solution of potassium permanganate. The length of the roots should not exceed 40 centimeters, if necessary, cut off all unnecessary.

Deytion is planted in spring in well-lit places with diffused light. Perfect option- place the landing under the crowns of trees. In addition, the action does not tolerate drafts, so this shrub should be planted in areas protected from the wind. The perennial prefers fertile, well-drained, moderately moist soil away from groundwater.

Before planting, it is recommended to prepare a soil mixture. The recipe includes 1 part of peat compost, 2 parts of humus and sand, 300 grams of slaked lime (for acidic soil) and 100 grams of nitrophoska. The technology of the landing procedure is as follows:

  • Holes are dug at a distance of 2-2.5 m from each other and from other objects. Depth - 40-50 cm, diameter - 60 cm;
  • Sandy drainage is poured into the bottom of the pit, the layer thickness is 15 cm;
  • The rhizome of the seedling is lowered into the hole and covered with a pre-prepared mixture. It is necessary to control the level of the root collar: it should not go deeper than 2 cm; it is better that it be at ground level;
  • The earth is compacted, then the seedling must be carefully shed. The shoots are cut off, a few buds are left;
  • The soil around the seedling is mulched with peat with a layer thickness of 5 cm or more.

Garden action care

In order to provide the shrub with favorable conditions for growth and development, it is necessary not only to choose the right place and soil for seedlings, but also to follow some rules regarding plant care. In general, the action is unpretentious and requires no more from the gardener than other perennials, however, the tips below will help to achieve the most abundant and long flowering.

Watering and feeding

Despite the fact that action is a drought-resistant and hardy plant, it also needs moisture. P pour bushes in normal conditions recommended 1-2 times a month, spending 10 liters per bush. In the heat, watering is done more often: up to 4-6 times in 30 days, 20 liters per bush. By the end of the summer season, you can stop watering the plant, since the action will receive enough fluid without human intervention.

During the flowering period, action bushes are recommended to be fed. Both organic (eg, mullein) and mineral fertilizers (superphosphate) are well suited. Consumption rate - 120-150 grams per bush. In summer, the perennial is fed monthly with liquid manure: up to 4 liters of fertilizer is applied under each plant.

Autumn pruning technology

The action is cut twice: in spring and autumn. Without this procedure, it would be extremely difficult to care for the plant, since it tends to grow very quickly and lose its decorative properties. Autumn pruning helps to form the correct silhouette of the shrub, it is also called sanitary. It is necessary to shorten all, without exception, the shoots that gave inflorescences in the current season. Extra, diseased shoots and those that lead to thickening of the plant are cut to the ground. If the owner is not completely satisfied with the shape of the plant, you can cut off all the shoots, leaving only a short "stump". This will stimulate the growth of young shoots that will form a new crown. Immediately after pruning, it is recommended to feed the bush with organic matter.

Preparing shrubs for wintering

Per lush bloom should autumn pruning, followed by an attack winter cold. In conditions with a low temperature of action, it is very difficult not to freeze, since this guest came to the middle lane from milder climatic conditions. Despite the fact that even frozen branches can quickly recover and even bloom in the same season, in order to avoid injury to them, special measures must be taken to prepare the plant for wintering.

Extra, diseased shoots and those that lead to thickening of the plant are cut to the ground

Procedures depend on the specific region and variety of shrubs. For example, shrubs growing in the southern regions will be enough to bend down to the ground. Those that decorate garden plots northern and middle latitudes, additional protection is needed.

Young plants growing in areas with snow and mild winter, you can bend to the ground, fixing the branches with arcs or two sticks and covering them with leaves and polyethylene on top. The plant will be able to overwinter well under a thick layer of snow, and the design will not allow it to break shoots in the spring during subsidence.

Old bushes have hard, but very fragile branches, so they should not be bent down in the same way as young plants. In this case, it is recommended to tie all the shoots with a rope, put a canvas bag or any other non-woven breathable material on the bush and fix it with clothespins. Such measures are designed to protect not so much from frost as from drying out flower buds.

When to plant

The best time to plant a bush in your garden is in spring, when the soil has already warmed up a little, but the buds on the trees have not yet opened. If you buy a seedling with closed roots, then you can plant it in open ground in mid-June. But before planting a beautiful action in your garden, it is important to choose a site for her where she will develop well.

Deutsia bushes are best planted in open areas. But at the same time, the plant does not like direct sunlight at noon. When choosing a site, keep in mind that the shrub will not grow well in a place open to cold northern winds and drafts.
If we talk about preferences for soil, then I must say that the shrub loves nutritious, moist soil, with good drainage. Excellent soil for planting is humus, compost mixed with peat. It is also good to add sand to the planting hole.
If the soil in the selected area is too acidic, and the action loves slightly alkaline soil, then lime should also be added to the planting pit.

Landing

Action is a very simple planting and care in the open field. Planting holes are dug in the selected area approximately 50 cm deep. Broken brick, expanded clay or stones are laid at the bottom of the pit as a drainage layer. The thickness of the drainage layer should be at least 15 cm. In the soil mixture with which the pit will be filled, you can add 100 g of dry nitroammofoska.

When planting action, in no case should the root neck be buried. The neck must be higher or at least level with the ground. Between seedlings should leave a distance of at least one and a half meters.

Planted seedlings are covered with earth, rammed and watered abundantly. Young plants are mulched with a layer of peat or sawdust at least 7 cm thick. A layer of mulch will protect the planted bushes from drying out and will greatly facilitate the care of the action.

Care

Caring for this Asian beauty comes down to watering, fertilizing and pruning.

watering

This shrub is drought tolerant and does not tolerate excess moisture very well. It is enough to water adult plants once a week, pouring a bucket of water under each bush.
After watering, it is imperative to loosen the soil around the bushes to a depth of at least 20 cm. If the weather is too hot, then the number of waterings is increased. Shrubs should also be watered more abundantly during flowering. Young plants also need more abundant watering.

top dressing

Deytion is very responsive to fertilization. It is useful to fertilize this shrub with fermented mullein by diluting a liter of fertilizer in a bucket of water. In mullein, you can add 100 grams of wood ash per bucket of fertilizer.

Twice for the whole season, fertilize the shrubs with complex mineral fertilizers, applying 150 grams of dry top dressing for each bush. It is advisable to fertilize the bushes during the flowering period. In the fall, they do not apply top dressing, as it is too a large number of fertilizer lowers the frost resistance of the plant.

trimmings

Action needs pruning twice a year. The first pruning is carried out in early spring, and the second at the end of flowering.

  1. At the end of April, all thin shoots, as well as those shoots that grow inside the crown, are cut at an angle with a sharp secateurs. Subject to spring pruning and those shoots that did not have time to ripen last year. During spring pruning, all frozen parts of the shrub are also removed.
  2. After flowering, faded branches are cut to a young shoot, which should also be shortened by a third. Pruning the plant after flowering stimulates the bush to give young shoots and bush, lay flower buds next year.
  3. Also, if the bush is more than 5 years old, a couple of the oldest shoots at ground level should be removed every three years. Thus, the action is rejuvenated.

Shelter for the winter

Deutsia is a very thermophilic culture, and very often shrubs freeze slightly in winter. Important milestone plant care is proper preparation him for the winter. With frosts of more than 20 degrees, the entire above-ground part of the shrubs can freeze out.
Therefore, the plant must be covered for the winter. The young branches of the bushes are flexible enough to bend them to the ground and pin them, cover them with a layer of dry leaves. From above, the bent shoots are covered with spruce branches.
If the shrub is too large, then it must be tied like a sheaf and wrapped with a covering cloth, for example, lutrasil. From above, the wrapped bushes are covered with spruce branches. They begin to cover the action for the winter even before the leaves completely fall off, with the arrival of the first frost.

In the spring it is very important to prevent the bushes from getting wet. Remove shelter when warm weather sets in.

reproduction

Action can be very easily propagated vegetatively and by seed, which is more difficult. With the vegetative method of propagation on cuttings, you can take both green shoots and already lignified ones. You can also divide the mother bush into several parts. Propagated action and root offspring.

Green cuttings

Cuttings of this plant can be carried out in June. Well-developed, healthy annual shoots are cut into cuttings. The length of the cutting should be at least 20 cm. The lower leaves on the cuttings are cut off, then the lower part is powdered with root and dipped in a growth stimulator for three hours. Then the cuttings are buried in a soil mixture of garden soil, humus and sand, taken in equal parts. The earth in containers for rooting must be soaked with a root solution.

Cuttings should be planted slightly obliquely, deepening them into the soil by about 1 cm. The containers are covered with a transparent film to create a greenhouse effect and exposed to shady place to the garden.
In order for the cuttings to give roots faster, they must be constantly sprayed. When the roots appear, young plants can be planted in open ground on a nursery bed. For the winter, young bushes must be well covered from frost. In a permanent place, the action grown from cuttings is planted the next spring.

lignified cuttings

If you decide to propagate the action with lignified cuttings, then you need to harvest them in the fall. Shoots are cut about 20 cm long, tied into bunches. Then the cuttings are put in boxes and covered with slightly damp sand. Boxes can be stored in the basement. The air temperature in the room should be around 0 degrees. In the spring, cuttings are planted immediately in open ground in the garden on a prepared bed and they are looked after in the same way as with green cuttings.

Growing from seed

This method of reproduction of action is used extremely rarely. The seeds of the plant need a long and rather laborious preparation. In addition, action grown from seeds may lose its varietal quality as a mother plant.

Diseases and pests

Actions are plants that are resistant to diseases. But still, some problems in their cultivation may arise.
Of the pests, shrubs are sometimes attacked by bumblebee proboscis or bumblebee. The pest appears on plants in July-August and eats young foliage. To get rid of the bumblebee, it is enough to spray the bushes a couple of times with an insecticide, for example, decis.

Action in garden landscape design

Large white action with a hat of flowers can be used in a solitary planting, in mixborders, on alpine slides. Very often shrubs are planted along garden paths. A shrub in the middle of an emerald green mowed lawn looks great.

Excellent neighbors for action are conifers, against a juicy, green background of which the shrub looks just great during flowering.

Many varieties and hybrids of action have been bred, which serve great decoration park alleys, paths.
