Lawn grasses photos, varieties, names and descriptions. Lawn grass that destroys weeds: photo, how to choose and plant

Not a single classic landscape design of the site is complete without: after all, against its background, both compositions and solitary plantings look very advantageous. A soft green lawn can also play a functional role: be a playground or a pleasant place for a picnic.

However, in order for the lawn to please, it needs care, in particular constant care. A classic lawn needs to be mowed at least once a week. Not all site owners have so much extra time, and the desire to do this. But this problem has a solution - a lawn for the lazy!

What it is?

A dwarf lawn is a lawn that does not require frequent mowing. That is, it is a mix of specially selected slow-growing and low-growing varieties (for example, the Liliput mixture).

How to sow?

A low-growing lawn is sown in the same way as an ordinary lawn. In order for the green carpet to please the eye for a long time, it is necessary to carry out the following preparatory work a few months before sowing (for example, from autumn):

  1. Clear the site of debris. At this stage, it is necessary to remove stones, stumps, and also decide the fate of existing plantings.
  2. If necessary, cut the sod. Dig up the site. Remove weeds, for example with herbicides.
  3. Level the surface and organize drainage.
  4. Make sure the layer fertile soil is at least 15 cm, and compact it.

Sowing seeds can be done manually or with a seeder. To achieve uniform seedlings, you need to sow half the seeds, passing along the site, and half across.

It is advisable to leave some seeds in reserve. They can be used later if "bald spots" appear.

What herbs to choose?

The lawn for the lazy consists of grasses that grow slowly and therefore do not require frequent mowing. Breeders have tried for you and brought out a lot suitable varieties. Consider the herbs that are most commonly used to create a dwarf lawn.

  • Fescue red red. It has excellent grass density. Strong underground shoots. It grows rapidly, covering the "holes". Relatively heat tolerant. Undersized. Rossinante, Maxima 1 varieties have proven themselves well.
  • Red fescue modified. Forms a dense turf, gives a lot of above-ground shoots, quickly takes root. Drought-resistant. Does not tolerate low mowing.
  • Fescue red hairy. It adapts well to different conditions: relatively shade-tolerant, drought-resistant. Especially worth noting is its resistance to salinity, thanks to which it can be planted on roadsides. Dense herbage.
  • Bluegrass meadow. Strong underground shoots. Resistant to trampling and low mowing. Tolerates heat well. Disease resistant.
  • The bent grass is shoot-bearing. Beautiful dense thin-leaved herbage. Good winter hardiness. Grows slowly. Rich green.
  • Sheep fescue. It has high disease resistance, drought-resistant, winter-hardy, tolerates salinity. Grows in all types of soil and tolerates shade well. It has a dense standing density.

In what ratio should all these herbs be combined? Of course, if you wish, you can independently develop a lawn mixture, taking into account the features various herbs. But this is absolutely not necessary, because knowledgeable people have already collected various mixes for you. You can find them on store shelves. For example, consider the composition of the grass mixture "Lilliput":

  • Red fescue ‘Rossinante’ 25%
  • Bluegrass meadow ‘Oxford’ 25%
  • Modified red fescue ‘Mariza’ 20%
  • Red fescue ‘Maxima’ 1 15%
  • Red hairy fescue ‘Greenlight’ 15%

Lawn mixture "Liliput"

Another popular mix is the low-growing Mini-Green lawn:

  • Red Fescue ‘Reverent’ 55%
  • Modified red fescue ‘Aida’ 25%
  • Bluegrass meadow ‘Balin’ 15%
  • Sheep fescue ‘Spartan’ 5%

How to care?

A low growing lawn will require the same maintenance as a regular lawn, except for the frequency of mowing.

In early spring, you need to ensure that puddles do not form on your future lawn. For this reason, it is advisable not to walk on the site where the green lawn will be during the period of snow melting. If a hole nevertheless formed somewhere, then it is necessary to pierce the ground in order to divert water. Otherwise, decay processes may begin. lawn should be carried out after the onset of heat. Like other plants, lawn grasses need nitrogen and phosphorus during the growing season. These elements contribute to the growth of green mass and roots.

In areas with arid climates, the lawn needs a layer of fertile soil to reduce the amount of evaporating moisture. Also, the lawn after the winter needs aeration, as the soil has compacted. Using simple pitchforks or special aerator rakes, the turf is evenly pierced. And of course, you need to general cleaning(scarification): Rake moss and felt with a fan rake.

In summer a lawn is necessary. The amount of watering is highly dependent on the specific weather conditions.

In addition, in the summer the lawn needs top dressing every 2-3 weeks.

Autumn lawn care activities are about the same as in spring: top dressing, aeration, combing.

As for the haircut, it must be carried out depending on the growth rate of the grass cover. It is necessary to maintain the height of the grass at the level of 4-7 cm. This is where the main advantage appears. undersized lawn, because it will need to be mowed only a few times a year.

How much is it?

As part of herbal mixtures, seeds are not the cheapest, so the price of a lawn for the lazy is higher than the price of an ordinary lawn. The cost of 1 kg of universal classic grass mixture varies from 150 to 300 rubles per kg. And the same "Lilliput" costs about 500 rubles per kg (prices for the summer of 2017).

Conclusion

The only lawn grass that does not require cutting at all, as well as other care, is artificial grass. Whether to use such a solution on the site is up to you. At the same time, the lawn for the lazy, although it does not relieve all the trouble, significantly reduces them.

Someone already has experience in growing a lawn, someone is just thinking about creating a green area on their territory, and in both cases, the question often arises: is there a lawn grass that does not need to be cut? Because it is this activity, which at first can even be romantic (the smell of hay, the monotonously buzzing lawn mower or the meditative swinging of a scythe) that tires later when caring for the lawn. The next component of the idea is obvious - if we strive to avoid mowing, then the grass should not be tall. Consider the options. If your site is in a lowland, then you need to save the earth from waterlogging. To do this, before digging up the lawn, make drainage. After rain, mark the places where water accumulates and dig deep holes (about a meter) in them. Line the bottom of the pits with broken bricks, then with coarse gravel, and over it with a layer of sand. Leave 40 cm on fertile soil. After planting, the water will go into the soil and enter the drainage hole through the soil.

But there is a caveat - bluegrass in the first season can grow no more than 10 cm, while actively forming the root system. In subsequent years, it will already reach a height that requires mowing. As a result, the grass will have a pale appearance. You will either have to sacrifice the lower branches of the trees and cut them off, or refuse to plant grass in this place.
  • You need to water the lawn regularly and carefully, without flooding the grass, but without depriving a sufficient amount of moisture. The grass needs at least 2.5-3 cm of water per week. Watering is best done through a sprinkler.

So, it is better not to place the turf under sprawling trees, because they create a shadow, and the grass does not particularly like it, however, the scorching sun does not favor it either. By the way, trees are not only the presence of shade, but also a regular lack of water, which is actively taken away by tree roots. And that is not all! By trampling the same track every day, you will compact the earth so much that the grass will lose oxygen to the roots and “suffocate”. Even sports mixes will not work in this case, because they are designed for heavy traffic of people throughout the site, and not in one narrow lane. Weed control

  • The main function of the lawn, as already mentioned, is to contain street dust. Scientists have proven that one hectare of grass can absorb about 100 tons of dust per year. The next, no less important functions are the strengthening upper layers soil, preventing soil erosion of the site, increasing soil moisture, creating a favorable microclimate. And the last important function is decorative. For sports lawns, sports and regenerative mixtures are selected, they are resistant to trampling, quickly recover after damage and cutting. Ornamental lawn mixes include beautiful green herbs and meadow flowers. For shady places, there are mixtures with shade-loving plants.

This type of lawn is often found in parks and is an ideal place to play ball or relax. The grass of the sports lawn is mowed 10 to 20 times per season to a height of 5-8 cm. On the lawn for sports games preferably mowing with mulching, the chopped blades of grass are returned to the lawn as a fertilizer providing it with the proper nutrients.

Leaves that have fallen on the lawn are collected and later used as a component of compost. Herb blends for sports lawn include herbs that can withstand heavy use.

A good seed mix is about 60% perennial ryegrass, 10-30% red fescue and 10-20% meadow grass.

decorative lawn

Decorative lawn requires careful care, as grasses for it are less resistant to damage. The land under the lawn should be ideal - cleared of weeds, fertilized with peat or compost, drainage channels are welcome in wet areas, and an irrigation system should be provided in a dry area. After winter, for the regeneration of herbs, an aeration procedure is carried out.

The first mowing of an ornamental lawn is done when the grass reaches 8-10 cm. The grass is cut to a length of 4-6 cm. Do not cut the lawn more than one third of its length, this reduces the resistance to damage. Ornamental lawn is characterized by lush greenery, dense and elegant. To get this effect, plants are selected that grow slowly and do not require frequent mowing.

Most often, such herbs are quite fragile and do not tolerate trampling. The best turf grass mixes contain fescue (60-70%), perennial ryegrass (10-20%), bluegrass and fescue (5-10%).

blooming lawn

It is impossible not to mention the lawn in the form flowering meadow, this is very original solution for nature lovers and just busy people, because a flowering meadow does not need special care, and most flowering plants are perennials.

Resistant to physical damage and trampling. If you plan to arrange all kinds of picnics and parties, then the grass must be resistant to this kind of damage. Even just to walk around your site and not harm its appearance, it is important to know that the planted grass is resistant to trampling.

Drought tolerance is a major factor in grass longevity. Those low-growing lawn grasses, which are not inherently resistant to high temperatures and long droughts, are theoretically not suitable for planting in a summer cottage. Such plants will dry out quickly, and all work will pass in vain.

Lawn grass seeds usually do not require much care. But if there is a desire to quickly see the fruits of your labor, then you can add special fertilizers that speed up the process of seed germination. And so they may well grow on their own.

In addition to various aesthetic qualities, plants must be resistant to diseases, otherwise some kind of epidemic will mow them down no worse than a lawn mower. It follows from this principle that the grass should be changed every two or three years. After a few years, the lawn becomes more vulnerable to diseases. To avoid this, it is necessary to pull out the old grass and sow new grass every few years.

perennial or annual

Differ single and For the lawn, perennial grasses are best suited. Since after the winter they will please the eye for another year or two. They also grow much slower than their annual counterparts, which is exactly the quality that low-growing grasses should have. By opting for perennial grasses, you can provide yourself with a lawn for another couple of years.

Lawn grass: price

It is very important to buy good seed. The future of the lawn depends on it. Lawn grass, the price of which depends on the composition and proportions of seeds of various grasses, can range from six hundred to three thousand rubles. Depending on the variety, weight and quality of seeds.

Grass against weeds

Lawn grass that destroys weeds is not an invention. It is very unpleasant when some weeds grow in the middle of a beautiful green carpet. The best way to control weeds is to mow frequently. You can also pull them out by hand. If there is no time to resist such a scourge on your own, then you should give nature a chance to fight it.

Lawn grass that kills weeds must be a mixture of certain plants. Such a set should contain one that does its job very well. It requires frequent moisture for fast and normal growth, so it is best planted in moist and shady places. Bluegrass and meadow grass will also work well. These cereals look great in the overall composition. Planting such a mixture is a great way to forget about weed grass in your area.

Lawn in spring time

Spring is the period of flowering and growth of plants. In all respects, this the best time year to plant a new lawn. Before planting, you should decide what kind of grass you need to sow. It is also required to purchase seeds, and if this lawn is the first in life, then some equipment.

The next step is to prepare the ground. If planting a lawn has been planned for a long time, then it is better if the land is prepared in the fall. This way, during a short period, the weeds that have survived the winter will sprout and can be easily removed. Before planting a new lawn, care must be taken to ensure that the ground is as level as possible. After all, it depends future view suburban area.

Lawn grass is planted in the spring in the second half of April - the most right time. It is at this point that you can already prepare the land after the winter, and it will be saturated with water from the melted snow.

By summer, there will already be adult green shoots on the site. Then you can evaluate your work.

How to sow lawn grass

Before that, as already mentioned, it is imperative to prepare the ground: level and remove all weeds. Before planting, if desired, fertilizer can be applied to accelerate plant growth. So, everything is ready, it remains only to sow the seeds.

The easiest way is to break the site into sectors. Having sowed one sector, you can proceed to another. It is necessary to sow so that the earth is evenly strewn with seeds. Then you need to sprinkle them with earth and pour water.

How much lawn grass grows

After sowing the grass, you can already wonder how much the grass will sprout. In order for the lawn to sprout in the first two weeks, you need to carefully take care of it: water it at least every other day. Yes, it is worth suffering, but with regular watering, the grass sprouts in one and a half or two weeks (depending on the variety).

Bluegrass meadow - perennial family of cereals with a height of 20-80 cm. It is often found in natural growing conditions on soils rich in minerals and humus, both in the northern and southern hemispheres. Narrow-leaved varieties with excellent lawn qualities have been bred. Meadowgrass meadow is a variety of lawn grasses with strong underground shoots and upright leafy shoots. Grow begins in early spring. Grows into a leafy mass suitable for mowing and clean cut. Meadow grass meadow tolerates trampling well and, thanks to underground shoots, it can recover from large damage. Newer lawn varieties are characterized by greater standing density than older ones. It tolerates heat well, which makes bluegrass suitable partner in mixtures of lawn grasses with cane fescue. In the phase of germination and initial development, meadow bluegrass manifests itself slowly, and therefore its presence in the herbage, corresponding to the percentage of content in the mixture, becomes noticeable only on next year after sowing.

Common bluegrass (Poa trivialis)

Common bluegrass is used in mixtures for shaded areas with high humidity, and is also suitable for reseeding on golf courses during the hot seasons. In this case, the choice of this variety is of great importance.

Meadow timothy grass (Phleum pratense L.)

Meadow timothy grass is a loose, bushy perennial grass 30-100 cm tall, with short creeping rhizomes. One of the most common top grasses, which is used in the hay and pasture direction, and recently in budgetary lawns, simplifying and reducing the cost of lawn grass mixtures. Widely distributed in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Grows in pastures, meadows, roadsides, rarely grows in forests.

Timothy grass (Phleum bertolonii DC)

Small-leaved timothy is grown in cold, humid regions. The endurance of such conditions in small-leaved timothy is much higher than in other types of lawn grasses. This is especially important where there is flooding of the lawn surface in winter period.

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)

Perennial perennial ryegrass, or, as it is also called, lawn ryegrass, is a grassroots, loose, bushy, fast-rooting perennial grass, herbaceous flowering plant family of cereals from 15 to 60cm Prefers a mild climate, but can tolerate temperatures down to -15°C without snow cover. In the presence of snow cover, perennial ryegrass tolerates even more low temperatures. It can be grown on all types of soil except for very wet ones. Perennial ryegrass is, given the emergence of the tube and growth in the spring, early, middle or late. Late varieties preferred as they form fewer stems in mid-summer. This makes it possible to have a beautiful lawn with less labor costs. With one exception, when all lawn grasses are diploid. characteristic feature perennial ryegrass is a very high resistance to wear due to the rapid growth of shoots and leaves. This makes this turf grass an important component of sports turf mixtures. The decisive factor for development, along with the choice of location, is the application of sufficient fertilizer and abundant watering.

Red fescue (Festuca rubra L.)

Red fescue is a rhizomatous and loose shrub grassroots perennial grass, view herbaceous plants families cereals up to 60cm high. Grows in many natural meadows with all types of soil and various conditions humidity. Red fescue grows relatively slowly in the year of sowing. It has very thin and narrow leaves and a high density of shoots. Grows well with different conditions, but is especially noted for its drought tolerance and fairly poor soils. It is very frost and drought resistant, which gives it an advantage over other varieties. Can carry some water on the surface in winter. Tolerates shade better than most other varieties.

There are three types of red fescue for lawns:

Red red fescue (Festuca rubra rubra)

It spreads through underground shoots (rhizomes) and therefore is able to cover bald spots well, develops well in cool areas on high altitude, as well as on light soils, the leaves have a rather dark color

Red hairy fescue (Festuca rubra trichophylla)

This is an intermediate form between hard red fescue and red red fescue, forms short underground shoots, leaves are thin and dark, the most resistant and hardy look fescue, therefore relatively salt tolerant, used mainly in ornamental turf and golf mixes

Hard red fescue (Festuca rubra commutata)

Forms low dense shrubs with small leaves that form a dense, excellent herbage, not picky about the presence nutrients and can withstand rather long droughts without loss, it is used in all lawns except for sports

Cane fescue (Festuca arundinacea L.)

Reed fescue is one of the most drought- and heat-resistant grasses with high endurance to trampling, forms perennial strong bushes, partly with underground shoots. Thanks to its large and deeply penetrating root system, it can supply itself with moisture at a time when other grasses stop growing. This means that cane fescue remains green during dry summers and tolerates high temperatures, and the lawn does not lose its color when there is a lack of moisture. The structure of the leaves of cane fescue is quite rough compared to other lawn grasses. However, the new cultivars have been significantly improved in terms of narrower leaves and planting density. The leaves of cane fescue are usually dark green in color. Winter hardiness depends on the variety. There are varieties with less winter hardiness for regions around the Mediterranean Sea and varieties with high winter hardiness for more continental climates. Cane fescue takes root quite quickly, although not as quickly as English ryegrass. Disease resistance is generally high.

Sheep fescue (Festuca ovina L.)

Sheep fescue is one of the grass species with the least requirements for growth. Grows on all types of soil, also found in many regions in natural meadows with light dry soils. Harsh fescue species, close to the original ones, have a bluish color. Varieties are selected for their very high drought tolerance, heat tolerance and winter hardiness. These grades are excellent in low wear turf mixes: roadsides, embankments, dunes, etc. Also plays important role in creating home lawns. New improved varieties are selected according to the color and characteristics of red fescue leaves. It has a dense standing density. The lawn tolerates shading well - at the same level as red fescue.

Shooting bent grass (Agrostis stolonifera L.)

Shooting bentgrass, shoot-bearing, spreads by more or less long above-ground creeping shoots that take root at the nodes, forming daughter plants. Forms a dense, uniform herbage, tolerates low cutting very well. Mainly used on golf courses due to its very high resilience and density of shoots on turf surfaces and very fine ornamental turfs. This variety can also be used in very dense home lawn mixes due to its soft leaves and dense standing.

Thin bent grass (Agrostis capillaris L.)

The bent grass thin forms dense or loose bushes with short above- and underground shoots. This is perennial species with thin leaves, growing on poor, acidic soils, in meadows, but also on high ground and in semi-shaded places. Forms a stable uniform herbage, tolerates low cutting very well with sufficient nutrition and watering. It is widely used on golf courses in mixtures with red fescue, as well as in ornamental lawns. Does not require high costs. This grass easily adapts to changes in growing conditions.

Team hedgehog (Dactylis glomerata L.)

It is undemanding to soils, prefers connected, moderately moist, humus clay and loamy soils. Grows poorly on light sandy soils. Quite drought-resistant, but does not tolerate long droughts. Shade-tolerant. Suffering from excessive wetting of the lawn. By late spring frosts unstable. Can't stand early autumn frosts and harsh snowless winters. Tolerates salinity.

The full development of the lawn reaches 2-3 years. In the spring it starts growing early, grows quickly. In herbage remains 6-8 years. On the surface of the lawn forms a sparse turf cover with separate loose bushes. It is used as a monoculture, since in the process of life it releases toxins into the soil that depress plants of other species, which leads to their loss from the herbage, while the hedgehog bush is transformed into a tussock.

A lawn sown with this type of grass does not tolerate trampling relatively well.

It is used as a turf in the forest, forest-steppe and steppe zones and especially for shaded areas.

Festulolium (Festulolium)

It was bred by the method of distant hybridization and experimental polyploidy with the participation of annual ryegrass and cane fescue and subsequent multiple family-mass selection of elite plants in a synthetic population. The bush is slightly sprawling, loose, the number of stems is 34 pcs.

The regrowth and evenness of the herbage in spring and after mowing is excellent.

Festulolium is different a high degree bushiness. The optimal seeding rate for grassed hayfields is from 22-30 kg/ha. When creating long-term cultivated pastures or reusable grass stands, the seeding rate is increased by 30-35%. It is the most important turf former when creating rough lawns, slopes on highways, is used to create wet meadows, for land reclamation.

It develops normally and gives high productivity in lowland habitats with soil moisture content of 60-80% of full capacity. Thanks to a powerful root system, the crop is able to use moisture from the deep layers of the soil, which ensures its high drought resistance in all years of use.

It grows well on different types of soils, but develops better on fertile, moisture-provided, loamy and clayey soils with permeable subsoil. The least suitable are sod-strongly podzolic and illuvial-humus sandy soils.

It adapts well to the reaction of the soil environment, it can grow both on strongly acidic soil with a pH of 4.5, and on soils with a pH of 6.5. Liming of acidic soils increases yield and improves quality.

White clover (Trifolium repens L.)

White clover in mixtures with fine grasses makes the lawn greener and healthier without the addition of nitrogen. Common fodder varieties of white clover are not suitable for this purpose. They do not tolerate repeated mowing. A new type of clover - Microclover, with very small leaves - is a breakthrough in creating lawns that are favorable for environment and tolerant of low mowing.
