What to do with a hole in the sofa? I bought a sofa, and its upholstery went to the seams, is it possible to return the money? An example of sofa repair with step by step photos

"Help! - write visitors to various handicraft and furniture forums, - the upholstery has sold out! How to sew up a sofa along the seam so that it is invisible? Let's answer honestly: if your family does not have a professional furniture maker, then in general, no way. Of course you can try. After all, sometimes accuracy, diligence and love for your furniture can contribute to a miracle. So, first we try to fix the problem on our own.

We sew the sofa ourselves

There is a strict sequence of actions, following which a sufficiently dexterous person can dock parts of the sofa upholstery that have come apart at the seams. Here's what it looks like.

  • Pick up the threads, but not in the color of the upholstery, but exactly in the color of the threads of the seams. It is desirable that the thickness and texture match. This is quite simple to do by cutting off a small fragment at the place of the parted seam. With a thread, you should go to a sewing and needlework store. There, experienced consultants will help with the selection.
  • In the same store you can buy a set sewing needles. The main condition is that the diameter of the working needle does not exceed the diameter of the holes from the factory machine. So the home seam will be almost invisible.
  • Google the tech blind seam". There are master classes on the Internet in both video and photo formats. This greatly simplifies the process.
  • Ask someone at home to be your assistant. It is necessary that a person carefully pull the edges of the parted seam together and keep them connected while the restoration work is in progress.
  • When sewing, use only the holes of the factory needle.
  • Having reached the preserved original seam, make a couple more stitches along it, then the junction will not be a risk point for a new hole.
  • Gently pull the threads, check that there are no wrinkles anywhere.

And a secret trick: find a hand moisturizer around the house. To test, smear some inconspicuous place on the couch with it. Wait for absorption. If there is no greasy spot in this place, feel free to smear the place of restoration. So the skin will lie more softly and naturally.

Not all resources are good

If in the case of a parted seam it is still possible to somehow repair the damage on your own, then more radical damage requires professional restoration. How to sew leather sofa if the skin is torn, burned, cut, stretched and torn?

There are several options.

  • If there is a small piece of leather from the same sofa, slightly larger than the cut, then it must be carefully pushed under the upholstery. Next, the lining from below is smeared special glue and tightened by hand. It is advisable to hold the screed with your hands as long as possible.
  • A rounded hole is already a job for liquid skin. You should purchase a set, mix the colors until you get the desired color scheme and carefully fill the hole with the composition.

These methods have a lot of nuances and give more satisfactory than good result. Indeed, in the first case, the junction of the gap will be quite noticeable, and in the second it is necessary to ideally choose the color of the color scheme, which is almost unrealistic, since in the liquid and hardened state the repair material has varying degrees brightness.

Everyone likes change. If an old, but beloved and familiar sofa is worn out, and you have not yet saved up money to buy a new one, you can update it by covering it with a new one. beautiful upholstery. You need to figure out how to choose the material, and then cover the sofa with your own hands.

If your sofa is worn out and looks ugly, then the way out of this situation will be its constriction.

You need to start with the main thing, without which it is impossible to start work, with tools and materials.

Tools and materials

How to fit a sofa yourself? It is necessary to prepare in advance the tools that are available in the house:

In the process of reupholstering the sofa, you will need a construction stapler.

  • a hammer;
  • Screwdriver Set;
  • scissors;
  • hex wrenches;
  • screwdriver;
  • wire cutters;
  • construction stapler;
  • pliers;
  • pliers.

Now about the materials. First of all, it is upholstery fabric. The main requirements for it are as follows: it must be strong, easy to clean, in contact with external environment don't lose your original view. The following fabrics are most often used for upholstery:

  1. Tapestry is a practical and cheap fabric, dense, 100% cotton with woven patterns of various shades and colors. Has a dust repellent property.
  2. Jacquard fabric is expensive, looks very solid, cleans well, strong, durable, wear-resistant.
  3. Flock is a fabric similar to leather, suede, but much cheaper. It is easy to clean, does not fade, durable, velvety, pleasant to the touch.
  4. Overcoat is a fabric in which 50% synthetics and 50% cotton. Similar to velour, but more High Quality. Strong, breathable fabric.
  5. Faux suede is a durable, eco-friendly material that is easy to clean. Can be washed in warm water. Visually, it is not easy to distinguish natural suede from artificial.
  6. Leather. For furniture upholstery, both artificial and natural are used. Solid, strong and comfortable material.

Except upholstery fabric, you will need to prepare a braid, furniture tape and piping. Also needed:

  • plywood sheet;
  • foam rubber;
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • special staples;
  • piece of chalk;
  • strong thread or twine and needle;
  • nails;
  • screws and bolts;
  • joiner's glue or PVA.

To change the upholstery of the sofa, you will need foam rubber.

When buying foam rubber (polyurethane foam), the following properties should be noted:

  • softness;
  • density;
  • elasticity.

Polyurethane thickness for sleeping sofa should be at least 4 cm. The marking will help to find out its density, where the letters indicate the brand, the numbers indicate the density (the first two) and the stiffness (the last two). To seat the sofa, you need foam rubber with a hardness of 40 to 50 units.

For different parts sofas with unequal load polyurethane is selected with different density: for sitting - with a larger one, and for the back and elbows - with a slightly smaller one.

The largest load is directed to the seat, so for it you should choose foam rubber with a density of 40 kg / m³ (brand EL4050), but you need to lay super-soft polyurethane foam on top.

On the handles and backrest, you can take foam rubber with a lower density, for example, 25 kg / m³.

Dismantling an old sofa

To remove the upholstery from the sofa, use a nail puller or a screwdriver.

Before starting the main work, you need to carefully examine the condition of the furniture. Use a screwdriver to remove the upholstery from the furniture. Then it is recommended to pry the staples. If they are firmly fixed, then you need to use a flat screwdriver and pliers.

To renovate old sofa with your own hands, you need to inspect all the elements of wood. For a detailed examination of the frame, you need to remove the substrate. All docking and fastening points must be checked for strength. Screws and bolts should be replaced with new ones. Broken and old structures must be replaced with new components from wooden beams, fiberboard sheet or plywood sheet. In case of minor damage, the product can be corrected with construction tape and wood glue. Particular attention should be paid to fasteners. Their replacement will extend the life of the sofa for a long time.

To repair the sofa, you need to separate the seat from the back:

  1. First, unscrew the bolts holding the armrests on the sidewalls.
  2. Then remove side surfaces and detach the bottom of the furniture.
  3. Unfold the sofa and turn it over outer side to the floor.
  4. Remove the backrest and remove the metal mechanisms holding it.
  5. Dismantle the seat and remove the used fasteners: staples and nails.
  6. Remove the old drapery and pull out everything that the sofa is filled with.
  7. If the springs are not damaged, then leave them, and if there are damaged ones, then pull out the block.

Old upholstery should not be rushed to be thrown away, it can be useful as a template for a pattern when sewing new covers.

Repair of the interior of the sofa

To unscrew the old springs from the sofa, use pliers and a hammer.

First you need to start repairing the spring blocks inserted into the back and armrests:

  1. Use pliers to unscrew the damaged springs.
  2. Replaced springs with new ones.
  3. Attach spring blocks with nails to the crate.

If the springs on the seat are especially worn out, they can be made elastic again:

  1. Cut polyurethane into small pieces.
  2. Fill the spring block tightly with these segments.
  3. Cover it with an old blanket or some material, such as burlap, on top.
  4. Attach this entire layer of material with nails to the box.
  5. Attach the springs to the material with twine and a thick needle.
  6. If there are recesses between the springs, fill them with foam rubber or cotton wool.
  7. From above, cover everything with binding material, for example, coarse calico, fasten with nails, pulling tightly.
  8. Apply glue to one side of the polyurethane and place it on the material with this side. The foam rubber will stick and the surface will be flat.

If there are sagging springs, do not throw them away, you can stretch them, and they will still serve. To make the sofa more voluminous, you can put a synthetic winterizer on top of the polyurethane.

When all of the above work is behind, you can start sewing sofa covers.

Upholstery and upholstery of furniture

Each detail of the sofa should be cut out separately.

Now you need to figure out how to fit the sofa. First you need to cut the fabric. The fabric chosen for drapery is laid out on the floor or a huge table, used covers are placed on it instead of patterns and circled with chalk. The fabric is cut, leaving allowances, and new covers are sewn on a typewriter. When sewing, it must be borne in mind that a large load is placed on the seams during operation. Therefore, their strength is required. You can use reinforced threads when sewing and sew in 2-3 layers.

At the joining points, you can apply a decorative tape or braid. These materials will cover unnecessary or unsuccessful seams and give the product a decent look.

When everything is ready, you can put on new covers on the seat, armrests and backrest. The attachment points of the new upholstery should be in the same place where the old covers were attached.

You can attach the covers with a stapler, each time pulling the material when the next mount is driven in. Upholstery on upholstered furniture should stretch well. Fasteners should be located every 2-3 cm. This will ensure a strong and reliable fixation of the upholstery. Sagging fabric is unacceptable. But excessive fastening is also undesirable. Therefore, this procedure requires caution and accuracy. During finishing works you need to control the degree of fixation.

In order for the upholstery to lie flat, you need to find the middle of the long side of the sofa, drive in the fasteners, and gradually move from it to the edges, alternately driving the fasteners from one side or the other from the first fastening.

Having finished with the upholstery, you should assemble the sofa with your own hands in the reverse order:

  1. Strictly control that the labels match.
  2. Attach the lock first to the back, then to the seat and the bottom of the sofa.
  3. Fasten the sides.
  4. Attach elbow pads to them.
  5. Fix the wood panels, varnishing them in advance, if necessary.

Anyone who wants to do it will be able to cover the sofa with their own hands, because there are no barriers for an interested person.

To decorate the sofa and mask the flaws, you can make several decorative pillows. This will give an organic and inseparable look to this design. This set looks great and will be complete. And the pillows will perform and practical function: They are comfortable to lean on. They will play the role of side backs. Now you know how to upholster a sofa, and you can do it yourself.

Restoration process: step by step instructions

We check the frame and base of the sofa, we make a replacement in case of breakage

Before restoring the sofa with your own hands, you need to check the condition of the main frame. If there are cracked or sagging bars, it is better to replace them. An array of wood rarely requires repair, but chipboard breaks often. It is not worth repairing, here you need to completely replace the broken part.

We drag the lower base of the sofa, as a template we take the old upholstery

The repair of the back, seat and armrests is slightly different, but in general, the restoration scheme for different parts is approximately the same.

We replace the upholstery on the inside of the armrests, replace the filler and sew new case

First of all, you need to carry out dismantling work:

  • remove the side armrests (usually the bolts on them are made with inside, here you may need a hex wrench, or pliers);
  • remove the seats and backs from the fasteners to the lower frame;
  • remove the old upholstery, remove the staples too;
  • carefully dismantle the old filler, check for suitability for reuse;
  • remove the springs, check their condition, if necessary clean, lubricate, replace in whole or in part;
  • check the condition of the chipboard, if necessary, replace the sheets.

We carry out the replacement of the outer part of the armrests and connect both parts together

All small parts from parsing it is better to put it in one container so as not to lose it.

We fix the upholstery at the base, if necessary, use a hammer and a stapler

At the second stage, we replace the old elements. To fasten parts, it is best to use both glue and a stapler. But if necessary, you can get by with handy tools. For example, instead of a stapler, use small carnations:

  • at both sides spring block lay a dense fabric, bend the edges inward on each side and sew with a nylon thread;
  • lay the spring frame on a wooden base, fix the springs through the fabric with a stapler. If there is no tool, you can make arched staples from steel wire, or from thin nails, hammering the “hat” to the side;
  • lay a new, or suitable old, filler;
  • pull the entire structure with a fastening fabric, in the manner of upholstery, fix it;
  • put on a new cover, secure with glue and a stapler.

Cross diagonals can be emphasized with a ribbon. In order for the foam rubber to lie flat, it is necessary at the replacement stage to cut small circles from the filler - places for future buttons. Then, cover with fabric and sew on the selected elements. To tighten the buttons, you can use a stapler, or strong threads, tightening them on the other side.

During the repair process, all objects and elements of the room are subject to change. But not everyone has enough money to update the furniture. If the frame is still strong and reliable, then there is no need to go shopping at all - you can modify and restore upholstered furniture yourself. The central place in the living room is occupied by a sofa or sofa. If you do not know how to make a constriction for little money, then we recommend that you read this article.

Tools

As in any other process, it all starts with planning and preliminary work. If you are going to fit a sofa at home without the involvement of specialists, then you should follow all the steps in order. To begin with, a tool is selected. Here's what you need to stock up on:

  • Screwdriver Set;
  • hammers;
  • scissors;
  • construction or furniture stapler with staples ( optimal size 8-10 mm);
  • pliers;
  • set of wrenches;
  • screwdriver;
  • PVA glue).

In addition, new materials should be selected: filler and upholstery material. Consider the most popular options.

Filler

Among modern fillers, the leading place is occupied by polyurethane foam, which can be bought in hardware store on affordable price. When buying foam rubber, you need to pay attention to the following characteristics:

  1. Density. It depends on which element the filler is selected for. For example, for sitting you need a larger indicator, and for the back and armrests - a smaller one. So, experts recommend choosing a density of 30 kg / m 3 for sitting (brand EL3040 and EL4050), and for armrests - 25 kg / m 3.
  2. Softness.
  3. Elasticity.

Among the domestic producers of foam rubber, the Muromporolon company stands out, which has been offering its customers for several years quality products With a large list advantages:

  • quality;
  • safety;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • hypoallergenic material;
  • affordable cost.

Covering materials

After you have decided on the filler, you can proceed to the choice of upholstery material. The choice is quite large, most often consumers stop at the following options:

  1. Tapestry is a dense and noble fabric that has dust-repellent properties. Great option for rooms made in retro style.
  2. Jacquard - artificial silk with a double-sided pattern. The material is very aesthetic, so it looks solid. Cleans up without a problem.
  3. Flock is made of natural (cotton) or artificial (polyester) base. The material has a velvety in a small volume, thanks to which it is pleasant to touch it. Can be cleaned dry or wet. This sofa is not afraid of cat's claws, as it does not leave marks.
  4. Velor has a high strength and low pile. Doesn't wrinkle.
  5. Shinil - by outward signs quite similar to velor, but unlike it, the material is of better quality. In addition, it breathes, has a slight hairiness.
  6. Artificial suede - can be both non-woven and woven. The material is well cleaned, can be carried out wet cleaning warm soapy water.
  7. Leather can be either natural or artificial, depending on the restoration budget and your own preferences. The material is durable and practical, but is afraid of the impact of the claws of animals.

Regardless of what is chosen, the following requirements are taken into account:

  • strength;
  • ease of cleaning;
  • resistance to ultraviolet radiation;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • attractive appearance.

Also in the list of necessary materials should be recorded furniture tape, braid and piping. it expendable materials needed for upholstery.

Getting Started

When all necessary materials and the tools are assembled and purchased, you can proceed to work. To begin with, the sofa should be disassembled into its main elements. As a standard, each model consists of the following parts:

  • back;
  • seats;
  • armrests;
  • lower part (tsarga);
  • back locks.

To do everything correctly and not break the components, follow simple algorithm actions:

  1. Unscrew the bolts that fix the armrests to the base.
  2. Remove seats.
  3. Disconnect the king.
  4. Unfold the sofa and turn the front side to the floor.
  5. Remove back.
  6. Remove locks.
  7. Dismantle the seats.
  8. Remove old fasteners: nails and staples.
  9. Remove old upholstery and filler.
  10. If there are faulty and broken springs, completely remove the block.

The upholstery and filler must be carefully removed, since subsequently new elements will be patterned on them.

Main part

The main part of the process includes several steps. To know exactly how to properly fit a sofa, you should do everything in stages and carefully.

Repair of the internal part

You should start with the repair of the frame, namely with the spring block:

  • defective elements are carefully unscrewed with pliers;
  • install new springs;
  • insert the block back and secure with nails.

It is possible to make old springs more elastic with foam pieces or an old blanket. We stuff the springs with pieces of chopped foam rubber. If an old blanket was chosen, then they cover the entire block from above and stitch it with a needle and twine. In order for the foam rubber sheets to lie tightly, they are pre-coated with glue. To make the foam rubber look more voluminous, a synthetic winterizer can be laid on top of the foam rubber.

Sagging springs can not be removed, it is enough to stretch them - so they will last longer.

Tailoring of covers

Regardless of whether the sofa will be upholstered with leather or fabric, the scheme of actions is very simple:

  • lay out the fabric on the floor with the wrong side up, on which we lay out the elements of the old upholstery on top;
  • fix with needles so that the elements do not move;
  • circle all the components with chalk, not forgetting the seam allowances;
  • cut out the material;
  • sew everything on a sewing machine.

We fit the elements of the sofa

When everything is ready, the sofa is directly upholstered, or rather its individual components:

  • we put on sewn covers on the back, seats and armrests;
  • the places where new clothes will be fixed should be exactly where the old covers were placed;
  • we fix new covers with a stapler, while the material must be tightened every time we drive in subsequent fasteners.

It remains only to assemble all the components in the reverse order of disassembly, while paying attention to:

  • for matching labels;
  • the fastening of the lock occurs first to the back, then to the seat and to the king;
  • mount the sidewalls, and then the armrests;
  • at the end we fix the wooden panels, having previously varnished them, if necessary.

All processes are quite simple and require only care. Now you know how to cover the sofa yourself and save a decent amount on this.

Constant stretching of the upholstery is required in order for the material to lie evenly and smoothly. Work should be done on long side and move towards the short one.

Skin-tight features

If leather was chosen as the new material, then the tightening process is somewhat different here, more precisely, it will be necessary to take into account several important points. It should be noted that a leather-covered sofa will look somewhat more respectable, and the care process will be easy, because, unlike textiles, it is easy to remove dirt, dust, greasy spots and other types of pollution.

The sequence of work during disassembly and repair of the sofa frame is no different from the previous description, so we will not dwell on it again. We pay great attention to the removal of the old upholstery, which will be used as a pattern for the pattern of new material. In addition, you will also need a lining, which will be any adhesive material.

When sewing new covers, we take into account the following features:

  • we exclude the sweeping process, since the needle can leave holes in the material;
  • all upholstery elements on the wrong side are fixed with adhesive tape;
  • so as not to damage the skin when sewing (foot sewing machine may leave traces), pre-lubricate the material with Vaseline.

You will also have to work with the allowances that were left for the seams during the cutting process. If they are added together, then front side they can bulge out. To get a smooth and smooth surface, it is necessary to separate well and iron the allowances through cheesecloth.

The seams will be securely fastened if you use tape.

Summing up, we can say that the restoration process can be completely carried out independently without the involvement of outside help. It is enough to purchase the necessary materials, assemble a simple tool for work and begin the painstaking task of fitting the sofa.

Video

An old sofa can be "brought to life":

But years of service, restless animals, children and guests can do the seemingly irreparable: tear upholstery. Gaps, holes, accidental cuts, and now we will close them up so that there is no trace left. And we do not need any professional at hand.

Prepare: a couple of hours of free time; a round leather patch cut from thin but strong and elastic leather remnants; scissors; cleaner on water based, safe for leather materials(oil-based products just won't grab onto the skin); hair dryer that lasts long enough long work nonstop; water-based adhesive, safe for leather materials; skin-friendly dye or several for mixing (matching the color of the upholstery); glass jars for mixing paint; paint sprayer or wide brush.

Cleaning

The entire area at the break and wide around it with a water-based (!) cleaner that is safe for leather materials. When buying such a product, look for the inscription "leather safe" or "safe for skin" on the packaging.

Drying

If it's not humid outside, air drying (or naturally drying indoors) is the most the best option, but if time is running out, and a hair dryer with careful use (i.e., on the most low settings and keeping the device away from the skin) will also work. Be careful, you don't want your leather to dry out and wrinkle (forever!) with high heat. It is best, in principle, to use a hairdryer with a diffuser: it will help to better control the flow of hot air. Allow the washed area to dry completely.

Now let's all fix it up

The next step is to insert the cut-out circle of leather between the padding (or inner layer) outerwear) and back side torn leather surface. Always make sure the patch is noticeably larger than the gap. Never use rectangular or square patches: it is much more difficult to disguise sharp corners under a leather surface.

To find a patch, go to second-hand shops: look for cheap leather skirts in them, which are usually made of very thin leather, nevertheless, reliable and elastic.

glue

Use a water-based, leather-safe adhesive to secure the patch under the upholstery/surface. Make sure to always use a water-based adhesive! Don't be afraid to apply multiple layers of glue. You can always erase any excess once the patch is securely in place.

Masking the patch

If it happens that you are dealing with a clean and straight (up-and-down) cut, accidentally created by the unfortunate movement of a razor blade or knife, then simply glue the two sides of the cut together - with the same water-based glue. In many cases, here the result will be almost perfect. Then you can skip steps 6 and 7 and continue with step 8.

Mixing paints

If the damage on the leather upholstery/surface is wider than the cut, use the paint described above. But there are some difficulties here: not a single color will fit right out of the bottle right away. You will have to mix several dyes in a separate glass jar (maybe by trying different colors in minimal portions) in order to get the same shade if you want the sofa / jacket to really look like new after repair. But it's not science: you'll just have to practice mixing until you get it right. Thin the paint with a small amount of water so that the former is easier to splatter or apply (whether using a spray gun or choosing a brush).

Clue: large quantity shades of paint can be found in art stores.

Applying paint

The paint will work like a filling. The sprayer, of course, is better - the paint will sit better, smoother, denser. They cost about 2-3 thousand rubles, and you can generally find a nozzle for 400 rubles. If you have chosen a brush, then you need a brush with soft bristles. Apply upper layer paint that seals and seals the gap and guarantees the area resistance to abrasion and fading.

Hint: decorative fluting process (airbrush retouching)" orange peel"over the drying paint will help smooth out any possible imperfections.

Completion

Apply several coats of paint to the gap and the surrounding area. This will help smooth out the difference in tide between the original material and the patched area. So even if the shade of paint you mixed is a little off, the repaired area will be visually invisible to the untrained eye. Let air dry (now only and exclusively in the air, i.e. in a natural way indoors, for example). Using a delicate and fine skin, remove any imperfections, and your treasure in soft leather upholstery already looks like new!
