How and with what glue to glue metal. How to glue metal to metal How to glue metal surfaces

The question of gluing metal parts arises not only among professionals. In everyday life, sometimes it becomes necessary to repair a product. In families with children, it is often necessary to restore the performance of toys.
Without knowing the properties of adhesives, it is impossible to properly glue. And if you need to glue a metal part to another material, or glue two metal parts, then modern adults do not know how to do this. simple job. For some, it turns out to be easier to throw away and buy a new one than to restore the right thing with your own hands.

Requirements for adhesive for metal

In order for metal parts to be connected with glue, you need:

  • know how the product will be used. An object can stand idle on a shelf, decorating it with its presence;
  • what final strength should the joint withstand after gluing;
  • what loads to take. For example, there may be only a small static load. There are nodes that experience dynamic loading;
  • what and with what needs to be glued, when two metal parts are connected, they are guided by the features of the metals. It is possible to glue metal and porous material, there will be other fixation conditions.

Metals corrode due to moisture in the air. Some binders lose their properties when wet. They just swell, the glued parts fall off. Operating conditions may require the finished device to be outdoors. Here, the glue must be waterproof, and withstand temperature changes.
So, glue for metal should provide a number of conditions for use:

  • provide maximum connection strength to ensure reliable use of parts;
  • retain their properties for a long time;
  • maintain the quality of gluing regardless of temperature;
  • be waterproof;
  • shrinkage after curing should not be large;
  • be chemically neutral and protect the bonding site from corrosion.

In order to correctly perform the adhesive connection, you need to consider physical and mechanical characteristics materials, as well as features of the geometry of objects.

How to choose a waterproof adhesive for metals

What do manufacturers offer for gluing metals? The list is quite large. You should first understand the features of the proposed product.
Waterproof glue for metal is divided into groups according to its structure:

  • acetone-based solutions - here soluble plastics are used as a binder. After the solvent has evaporated, only plastic remains, connecting different materials. Adhesives of this group connect different objects well, but when the temperature rises, destruction occurs in the gluing zone;
  • polymerizing organic matter quite effectively fix materials different types. There are elastic ones: BF-6 glue, 88 glue, and also hard ones - BF-2 glue. A solvent is added to them to give fluidity, it also evaporates;
  • two-component epoxy-based binders give the strongest bonds. Require special training surface, as well as compliance with the ratio of the volumes of resin and hardener;
  • double-sided tape is an intermediate element that is placed between metals or other objects to be joined. Available in several strength options. Many installers prefer to use this type for hard fixings;
  • cold welding- these are one- and two-component viscous plastics that must first be kneaded so that the adhesive included in their composition begins to work;
  • A thermoplastic superglue that liquefies when heated and hardens when cooled. Such materials are used very limitedly, the reliability of the connections is low. Applied only for short-term use in critical situations;
  • Hot melt adhesive is a relatively recent variety of thermoplastics used in glue guns. Suitable for minor repairs. It is used by needlewomen. There, hot melt glue has an undeniable superiority over other analogues.

You should familiarize yourself with some branded types of glue for metals.

  13. Liquid nails "Moment Installation" - the adhesive is inside the tube. To work, you need a mounting gun. Used by car repairers.
  14. Cyanoacrylate "Cosmofen" is one of the best representatives of adhesives. Expensive, but shows the best results.
  15. Plexus A420 - universal adhesive, connects different parts, the manufacturer gives a guarantee for multiple combinations.

How to glue metal? - the question is asked quite often in various forums. Solutions to such issues should be considered on separate examples.
During the operation of cars, the fuel tank is sometimes damaged (in modern cars it is located under the trunk in the lowest part). It can be repaired without even taking it out, you just need to use the pit or install the car on a flyover (raise it on a lift). Use Case epoxy resin(Fig. 1).
Rice. 1 Sealing the fuel tank with epoxy

  1. It is necessary to clean the place not only where there is damage, but also nearby.
  2. Mix the resin with the hardener in the proportion indicated on the package.
  3. Prepare pieces of cotton fabric according to the size of the cleaned spot.
  4. Soak fabric in epoxy.
  5. Straighten and apply to the cleaned stain.
  6. Apply at least three more layers of epoxy-impregnated fabric.
  7. Apply the remaining resin with a stick around the repair site.
  8. To speed up drying, you can slightly heat it with a hair dryer (not higher than 80 ° C, so that gasoline vapors do not ignite).

Attention! Perform work in polyethylene gloves in a ventilated area.

Option to use glue "Moment" (Fig. 2).

Rice. 2 Fuel tank repair with Moment glue

  1. You need thick fabric. A small piece is cut out of it to cover the area of \u200b\u200bthe existing hole. Some users use thin fabric with multiple layers.
  2. Clean up the area around the damage, use the skin.
  3. Degrease with any solvent, preferably 646 or acetone.
  4. Completely saturate the fabric. You can also use analogues of glue "Moment".
  5. Lubricate the place of gluing with glue, you need a thin layer, so it is advisable to smear it with a brush or stick.
  6. Hold the impregnated fabric for a couple of minutes so that the glue is saturated with air.
  7. Attach the impregnated cloth to the place of the breakdown, it is desirable to straighten it well and press it.
  8. After complete polymerization of the glue, touch up the place with nitro paint.

Practice has shown that fuel tanks repaired in this way serve until the end of the vehicle's life. The waterproof adhesive stays securely in place difficult conditions car work.
Modern adhesive materials designed to work with metal allow you to connect products in the most different combinations. If the technology is observed and the components for work are correctly selected, then a high quality of fixing the elements is achieved.
Metal glue with frost-resistant properties should be in the motorist's first aid kit. With it, you can always perform repairs of any complexity on the road.

How to glue metal to metal

Sometimes home craftsmen have questions about how to connect various materials together. The biggest bewilderment is the connection between the metal parts of the jewelry. If a girl turns to a man for help, he usually advises either to solder or weld the metal parts together! Most often, these methods are not suitable for girls - not only the lack of skills affects, but also the lack of tools.

And how then? Very simple - like any other materials, metals can be glued together! Only you need to glue it not like paper, but differently, in compliance with special technologies - like a man!

First you need to choose an adhesive. Different brands are suitable for gluing metals: for example, Cold Welding, Superglue, Epoxylin.

When the glue is bought, you will need a few more tools. If you are gluing very small parts, a toothpick will come in handy, if two wide surfaces - a thick needle or any sharp tool that is either not a pity or easy to sharpen. In addition, you will need any alcohol-containing liquid (glass cleaner, alcohol, cologne, vodka), napkins.

Before you start gluing surfaces, they need to be prepared. To do this, wipe both surfaces properly with alcohol - this technique is called degreasing in electrical engineering. It allows you to make the connection as strong as possible.

If you are connecting sufficiently wide surfaces, it is recommended to scratch them well so that the connection is strong.

Now you can apply glue. On small parts, the glue must be carefully applied with a toothpick, and on wide parts - directly from the sharp nose of the tube. The layer of glue should not be thick, otherwise, when compressed, it will flow, and the place of gluing will not be neat. Spread both parts with glue, hold them for a few seconds so that the glue dries a little and becomes sticky, and press firmly against each other. If the surfaces are very small, try pressing them together with toothpicks. The fact is that this glue is harmful to the skin, and on sensitive skin it can cause an allergic reaction. Also, it doesn't wash well. Hold the parts to be glued for a few seconds. Now lay them aside to dry.

After a few hours you can use the product!

How to glue metal

Everyone has to stick something to something. If we are talking about paper or cardboard, then, of course, no problems, as a rule, arise. But what if you need to glue metal objects?

Metal bonding is a complex process, depending on many factors:

what kind of metal is to be glued (aluminum, steel, copper, stainless steel, etc.)

what load will the glue line have to withstand

what is the surface of the glued parts (smooth, rough), etc.

Therefore, it is rather difficult to write a single instruction for gluing, but several universal advice available.

How to glue metal? First you need to prepare the surfaces for gluing. It is unacceptable that there are burrs, scale, rust, dents, etc. on the surfaces.

For a good gluing result, the parts should fit as tightly as possible to each other, which means they should be smooth.

Surfaces are treated in two ways: mechanical and chemical.

If the intended connection will not be subjected to significant loads, then only mechanical cleaning and grinding of the surface with an emery wheel or bar, sand, metal brush, etc. can be dispensed with.

But, as a rule, it is necessary to apply both methods. Chemical method treatment serves to remove grease, oxide films and replace the medium on the surface to create better adsorption.

Surfaces must be bonded immediately after chemical cleaning, since under the influence of oxygen, oxide films are formed again.

Glue for metal can be different, as a rule, BF-2, mixtures based on epoxy resins are used in everyday life,

Phoenix, some sealants and self-prepared mixtures are also used.

You can use the following recipe: mix one part sulfur powder, sixteen parts iron filings (fine) and two parts ammonia.

Dilute the mixture with water until the density of sour cream. You need to apply glue in two steps: the first layer should dry a little, grab, then the second is applied, and the parts are pressed tightly against each other.

Adhesive for bonding metal must meet the following requirements:

be sufficiently fluid - excessive viscosity prevents the filling of irregularities

should not contribute to corrosion

after curing, the adhesive layer must remain sufficiently elastic.

Heat-resistant adhesive for metal, used for gluing parts exposed to significant temperature effects.

Glue BF-2 is able to withstand temperatures up to 180ºС. With more high temperatures apply TK-1000 (up to 1000ºС), K-300 (up to 300ºС), VT-200 (up to 200 ºС) and others.

We glue metal

Modern adhesive mixtures allow you to firmly connect metal to metal, and if necessary, metal to other materials.

The joining of metals on glue is widely practiced in the auto, aircraft and shipbuilding industries. They are used not only for planar or point connections metal blanks but also constructive.

In principle, there are two types of adhesives: one-component and two-component. In addition, they are divided into fast and slow curing adhesives. Which glue to use depends on the shape and surface properties of the blanks, as well as on the loads that the joint will then take.

To ensure a strong bond between the workpieces to be joined, the contact surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased. This is the only way to achieve the strength of joints comparable or even superior to soldered and welded ones.

It is convenient to work with glue. It is simply applied to the contact surfaces, and the parts to be glued are pressed tightly against one another. Special equipment here, as a rule, is not required.

PREPARATION OF BLANKS FOR GLUING

Strength adhesive bond largely depends on how well the parts are prepared for gluing.

First of all, carry out mechanical cleaning, the purpose of which is to remove dirt, grease, paint or rust. To do this, the contact surfaces are treated with sandpaper with a grit of 60 or 80.

The chemical cleaner must be compatible with the adhesive and the material of the parts to be bonded. Typically, the instructions for use of the adhesive indicate cleaning agents that can be used to prepare the surface to be treated.

Only carefully cleaned contact surfaces during bonding give strong connection.

After cleaning, the surface is washed with one of the recommended cleaning agents. It can be acetone, alcohol, refined gasoline.

STRUCTURAL JOINTS BASED ON TWO-COMPONENT ADHESIVES

Until now, it is believed that Epoxy putty and proven BF-2 glue for years are the best for bonding metals. Many people use Epoxy all-purpose glue, some craftsmen use EDP or EPO adhesives.

But no matter which glue you choose, the process of preparing surfaces for gluing is almost the same.

First of all, from the surfaces that you want to glue, you need to remove grease stains, rust and make the surface rough. Grease and oils are removed with gasoline or solvents detergents. Rust can be removed from steel parts by pickling. Ready for pickling special solution:

#8212 60% concentrated hydrochloric acid

#8212 38% water

#8212 2%(30%) hydrogen peroxide.

After wiping the surfaces with this solution, they should be rinsed very well with water. If the bonding surfaces are not large sizes, they can simply be immersed for one (!) Minute in a metal pickling solution.

Glue is applied immediately after degreasing or etching, but on a dry surface! Do not forget to prepare fixtures for fastening the parts to be glued in advance. It can be a tourniquet, a clamp or just a load that will hold the surfaces to be glued for several hours (according to the instructions attached to the glue).

When gluing with Epoxy putty, it must be heated to 30 (.) degrees by lowering the bottle with glue into hot water. Mix the heated resin well with the liquid hardener. Prepare the mixture no more than 15 minutes before use. Both surfaces are lubricated with glue and clamped into the prepared fixtures for a day. Excess glue that came out after compression, I advise you to remove it with pure acetone. I advise you to work with glue in rubber gloves because the hardener is poisonous!

When gluing metal with BF-2 glue, the technology is different. Glue is applied to both surfaces to be glued and allowed to dry for an hour. A good result is obtained if, after an hour of drying at room temperature, dry for an additional 15 minutes at a temperature of 50-60 degrees (for example, in the oven gas stove). Then a second layer of glue is applied and dried to remove it, i.e. glue should not stick together fingers. Having connected the parts well, they are clamped, and then placed in an oven heated to 130-150 degrees for 1-2 hours. For the final setting of the parts, the structure is left for another two days in warmth at room temperature. After this lengthy process, all clamping devices are dismantled.

Yes, this is a painstaking and lengthy process, but according to experts, it still gives the best result when gluing metal.

Properly choosing adhesive compositions, you can glue any metal surfaces.

What can be used to glue metal?

Long time question about metal bonding remains one of the most difficult. During the Second World War, a large amount of research was carried out and the first result was obtained, how to glue wood and metal. De Havilland Aircraft Company (Great Britain) produced the first aircraft using glued wooden structures, metal reinforced.

Today, glued metal parts are widely used in various industries and households. Such popularity is explained by the fact that, compared with other types, such a connection has great advantages: not only bonding metal to metal. but also makes it possible to glue metal with wood, glue plastic and metal, leather, rubber, glass, paper, etc.

Of course, this is not a complete list of materials with which you can glue metal. Knowledge about the use of glue or double-sided tape makes it possible to answer the question What is the best way to glue metal and you will get:

join dissimilar metals that cannot be welded or riveted

evenly distribute the load over the joint area

reinforce structures where previously riveting and welding could cause weakening

reduce structural vibration

tight connection under pressure and vacuum

avoid temperature fluctuations that occur during welding

dismantling of most adhesive joints when heated without damaging the substrates

get the best appearance and flat surface.

Sometimes glue metal- the only choice for joining with dissimilar materials, since this method is simple in technology and does not lead to a change physical properties.

Rapid development modern technologies made the bonding of metal parts as commonplace in industrial assembly as threaded connections, welding or riveting. Most often, the consumer no longer faces a choice: welding or gluing - he chooses what glue metal. Today, manufacturing companies offer a wide range of adhesives. One of the most innovative are universal double-sided tapes. trademark Dublfix.

Specially designed to work with a variety of materials, our adhesive tapes excellent for glue metal with plastic . wood, rubber, etc. These products provide high absorption of shocks and vibrations, fix irregular and curved surfaces well, which greatly simplifies and reduces the cost of assembly or repair. To find out how to glue metal quickly and conveniently, check out Dublfix double-sided tape, which is available both in rolls and with rectangular die-cuts.

Deciding what glue metal to metal. can apply multi-purpose double-sided adhesive tape Double Kote . It is ideal for manual or automated use. The foam backing gives the tape flexibility and the ability to take the shape of the surface, filling in irregularities, thereby increasing the area and quality of adhesion. Of course, the choice of adhesive tape for bonding metal depends on the properties of the surface of the parts, as well as on the load that the adhesive joint will later be subjected to.

Before gluing plastic and metal, you should pay attention to the fact that double sided tape, will help solve the problems associated with unexpected pressure, expansion or contraction, for example, while cooling or heating these materials. After all, as you know, glue metal and plastic is difficult, primarily due to different coefficients of thermal expansion. Removable double-sided adhesive foam tape for metal surfaces metal shelf Tape easily compensates for any possible differences.

Moreover, tapes of this type can be easily removed after use from hard surfaces, if necessary, without leaving any traces behind. The Dublfix product range has enough options that can solve all questions on how to glue plastic and metal.

Recently, such a trend as Hi-tech, and its light structures made of glass and metal, has become increasingly popular in design. When choosing how to glue glass and metal, more and more manufacturers resort to double-sided adhesive tapes. Because adhesive tape not only provides a perfect fit and the absence of seams and rivets on the surface, it is convenient and economical to use, and cleaning metal surfaces does not take much time.

How to glue glass and metal? An excellent choice would be double-sided adhesive tape increased strength DUBLFIXHIGHBOND DHB04 . It is coated on both sides with an all-purpose acrylic adhesive that provides excellent adhesion to a wide range of surfaces. Due to its high resistance to temperature and humidity changes, DHB-04 ideal for both indoor and outdoor work and you will no longer have a question How to glue glass to metal? .

In connection with the active development of the production of various adhesives, the possibilities of constructing compositions of fastened materials have also expanded significantly. If you are interested in whether and how to glue rubber and metal, pay attention to the universal double-sided adhesive tape twin Stick White trademark Dublfix. The rubber adhesive applied to this tape is different high strength clutch with various surfaces(including corrugated). The thickness of the tape varies from 0.8 mm to 50.8 mm. The plastic basis from the made foam polyethylene allows to fill emptiness that gives the chance to stick together uneven surfaces. Adhesive tapes greater thickness are used not only for glue metal and rubber, but also to create a 3D effect.

In addition, being the company's main product, scotch TwinStickWhite , Bonds well to wood and metal.

Although our adhesive tapes are not particularly high demands to the cleaning and preparation of metal surfaces, Dublfix informs that only cleaning of metal surfaces, good preparation and cleanliness of contact surfaces will ensure such bonding of metal that this connection will surpass soldering or welding in strength.

As a rule, mechanical cleaning of the metal surface is recommended first. For this, it is preferable to use solvents that evaporate without a trace.

The process of cleaning metal surfaces before gluing primarily comes down to washing and thoroughly drying them. If a metal surface cleaning solvents is carried out in addition to the chemical degreasing process, a good result of removing dirt from the surface can be achieved by mechanical processing, using brushes and wiping cloth.

Not infrequently, oxide films (rust, etc.) are present on metal surfaces, which cannot be removed by degreasing. In such cases, it is necessary to mechanically clean the metal surfaces before gluing, and then degrease them again.

After cleaning the metal surfaces, gluing is not difficult, just apply adhesive tape to the joints of the parts and press firmly.

There are several ways to fasten metal parts to each other, but all of them are characterized by a number of disadvantages. For example, thermal impact leads to overheating of the material and disruption of the integrity of its structure, which in some cases reduces the durability of such a "contact". In addition, not all metals can be joined using a certain type of welding. The application also "weakens" the treated area, and it takes much more time.

Appeared about half a century ago new way reliable connection of metals, which is called "cold welding". This technology involves the use of special adhesives and is simple and affordable.

Benefits of bonding

  • Professional skills and special equipment are not required.
  • In the process of work, the properties of the metals at the junction do not change.
  • The load on the base is distributed evenly.
  • Full tightness of the "seam".
  • When gluing metals (alloys) there are no restrictions on their types.
  • This work can be done almost anywhere.
  • There is no need to subject the seam to additional “finishing” processing (levelling, grinding), as, for example, after electric or gas welding.
  • The minimum time for a technological operation.
  • In addition, a significant advantage of gluing is the ability to reliably connect metals with other materials, which cannot be done (or is extremely difficult) in other ways.

The cost of adhesives

Pricing mainly depends on the manufacturer and the properties of a particular composition. The range is so large that it makes no sense to list all types of adhesives for metal. To get an idea of the cost of products, a few examples will suffice.

UHU– under this brand are available for sale various adhesives. For metals, it is designated as "Metal". This German product can often be found in tubes of 30 g (15 + 15) worth from 210 rubles. Provides strength in the temperature range from -20 to +120 ºС. .

"Super Grip" - domestic composition on epoxy based in tubes 50 + 50 g. Can be used for gluing various materials. However, the time for complete drying is 36 hours. Price - from 45 rubles.

"Spike" - equally well suited for both non-ferrous and ferrous metals. Often used for repairs cast iron radiators, various capacities, pipes. 50 g of such "plasticine" cost about 30 rubles.

What to look for when choosing

There are many on the market various formulations designed for bonding metals. Including heat resistant ones. Whether glue is good or not is another matter. The final conclusion can be drawn only after practical application, making sure on your own experience.

In this regard, I would like to note that it is necessary to treat with some caution the compositions that are positioned by the manufacturer as universal. From the point of view of the author, with the same success it is possible to advertise and " perpetual motion machine". Nothing absolutely perfect in all respects exists in principle, and this is a fact.

Perhaps this glue is really characterized excellent properties and can be successfully used in various types works. But still, there are some limitations that are not customary to talk about out loud. Therefore, knowing why exactly we buy it, you should carefully read not only the instructions for use, but also the composition of the product (the components used in the manufacture).

Maximum temperature, at which the adhesive does not lose its properties. When clarifying this indicator, it is necessary to take into account such points. Firstly, in what conditions the resulting "assembly" will be operated. Secondly, is it supposed to process the part after gluing. If so, in what way and how much will it heat up?

Drying time and conditions. It all depends on the specifics and place of work. With that in mind, is this lineup right for us, even if it's good in every other way?

Application method. Manufacturers recommend various techniques gluing. Some compositions are applied "pointwise", while others completely process the place of gluing. It is clear that in the latter case, the material consumption will be much higher.

Bonding technology. They may be different. For example, the method of thermal activation. It is necessary to evaluate whether the composition will be convenient to use, taking into account the specifics of the application.

Consistency. Adhesives, including heat-resistant ones, come to the market in several versions - in tubes, in which the composition (usually based on epoxy resins) and a hardener, or in the form of plastic "sticks". In the first case, you will have to do “kneading”, which is not always and everywhere possible, since you will need dishes. The second option is convenient in that you can cut off as much as necessary from this "plasticine". And then knead a piece and use it for its intended purpose. However, it is quite difficult to repair microcracks with the resulting “paste” with high quality. There are ready-to-use adhesives that are much more convenient to use.

Liquid resistance, aggressive substances. This is especially important for parts that will be installed in some mechanisms or outdoors.

What materials can metal be bonded to?. If the instructions give a huge list of them, then it is useful to recall the problem of the "universality" of any product. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase a “narrowly oriented” glue, for example, metal + plastic. That is, to choose the composition for a specific task.

  • If the label says “cold welding”, this does not mean that this composition is suitable for metals. Using this technology, products from other materials can also be fastened - faience, ceramics, wood, and so on.
  • Given some specificity of the use of such adhesives, you should not buy them with a margin. In general, the storage period is limited to one year.
  • People who have not previously encountered "cold welding" commit typical mistake- focus on the manufacturer, brand. What advertising is worth, no one needs to explain. Most the right way learn about really quality adhesives for metals - turn to professional practitioners.

You can talk, for example, with car service workers. These guys, dealing with hardware on a daily basis, are probably sometimes engaged in gluing parts. And since they are not involved in the chain "manufacturer - buyer", their opinion can be considered the most objective and impartial. By the way, many Russian adhesives enjoy a good reputation and are no worse than their foreign counterparts, but they are much cheaper.

Using glue for metal, we must not forget that the strength of such a connection is still worse than with welding work. If the part is subsequently subjected to dynamic loads, then no composition will ensure the durability of the joint, no matter what the advertisement claims.

Metal is a high-strength material, but sometimes, according to different reasons, small products from it also break, falling apart at the same time. It is difficult to use welding when repairing such “small things”, it is much easier to try to glue the broken parts of the product to each other. Consider how this can be done, using the example of repairing a small metal clamp, with which a table lamp was attached.

In order to glue together two parts of a metal product, you will need:

1. Two-component epoxy adhesive, the description of which indicates the possibility of its use for bonding metal. The container with glue is usually made in the form of a syringe with two cylinders, one of which contains epoxy resin, and the other contains a hardener.

2. Alcohol.
3. Any small cuvette (a blister pack from the same glue will do) and scissors.

Gluing the broken parts of the metal clamp to each other is carried out as follows:
1. The metal surfaces of the product parts to be glued are degreased with alcohol.

2. Scissors open the container with glue

and the piston is squeezed out of it into a ditch required amount resin and hardener in proportion, established design syringe.

3. Thoroughly mix the adhesive components.

4. Carefully apply the finished glue to the fastened surfaces of the product.

5. Firmly press the parts of the clamp to be glued together.

Wait for the final hardening of the glue will have at least half an hour. The result is a fairly strong metal-to-metal connection with a neat adhesive seam.

Whole metal product the strength of the clamps repaired in this way, of course, is inferior, but if you do not load it heavily, then it can last for a long time.

Video on how to glue a broken metal product

The traditional method of connecting metal parts is welding or screw connection using bolts and screws. The weld seam provides a tight and fixed connection of parts, but it is not always possible to use welding at home. An additional difficulty is the welding of thin-walled metal. And also for welding non-ferrous metals, special equipment is required, which also introduces some difficulties in this type of metal-to-metal connection.

The easiest way to implement a screw connection of two parts both in industrial and at home. A significant disadvantage of this type of connection is that, firstly, it is not completely sealed. Secondly, at various kinds deformation applied to the parts to be joined, the strength of the connection depends only on .

Most of the disadvantages described above are devoid of adhesive bonding.

Currently, there are many formulations that can combine various metals, regardless of their thickness or brand.

In addition, with an adhesive joint, in case of its deformation, the load is evenly distributed along the adhesive joint. This significantly increases the strength of such a connection.

Types of glue for metal products

Of the many types of glue designed to glue metal to metal, several groups can be distinguished:

  • Double-sided tape. Available as a synthetic tape different thickness with adhesive on both sides. The width of the tape is selected based on the desired width of the adhesive joint. It has a high degree ease of bonding metal parts. The thickness of the tape allows you to get a sealed glued seam in case of loose fitting parts. To disadvantages double sided tape include the low strength of the bonded seam and low durability.
  • One-component mixtures. Presented in the form of a variety of adhesives based on rubber or silicone. The composition that allows the parts to be glued together polymerizes in air or under the influence of moisture in the air. The hardened composition resembles dense rubber. The most universal in application, they allow gluing not only metal, but also products from other materials. Of the minuses, it is worth noting the low strength of the adhesive seam and the need for careful preparation of the surfaces to be glued.
  • Two component adhesive. Polyurethane or epoxy resin is used as a base. For polymerization, special hardeners are used. They can be either liquid (for example, “moment” glue) or in the form of a paste (cold welding). It has excellent adhesive properties, the seam is strong and durable. Allows you to connect workpieces from various materials. Two-component compounds form the strongest and most durable seam, which seizes much faster than a single-component one.

As you can see, in order to glue the metal, there is a large assortment adhesive mixtures, presented by different manufacturers. Therefore, answering the question of how metal can be glued to metal, one should consider in more detail all possible ways and options for implementing the connection using glue, and after that it will be possible to draw an unambiguous conclusion about which glue is best suited in a particular case.

How to choose a good glue

It's no secret that the thing that works best is the one that fulfills only its purpose. The same situation is with glue for metal. Depending on what characteristics the seam must meet, it is required to choose an adhesive suitable for this purpose. For example, the Klen-812 tool will allow you to glue together many different materials. The seam is very strong, but hard and brittle. Because of this, it can be used for products that are not subject to subsequent deformation or vibration. BK-20, based on polyurethane, forms an elastic and durable adhesive joint, so it is not afraid of deformation and vibration. Below we will consider in which cases it is better to use one or another adhesive composition.

To obtain a strong and durable connection, it is not enough to apply glue to the material and compress the parts. The bonding of metals consists of a series of procedures, which, as they are performed, can be conditionally divided into three stages:

  • Preliminary stage. Bonding preparation. At this stage, the surface of metal parts is cleaned of solid contaminants and rust. Then it is desirable to lightly mat the mating surfaces. This is done for better adhesion of the surface to the bonded material.
  • Gluing process. Before applying the adhesive composition to the parts, it is necessary to stir it thoroughly. In the case when a two-component mixture is used, both components are thoroughly mixed in the proportions indicated in the instructions. Then the adhesive mass is evenly applied to the previously prepared surfaces to be glued. After applying the adhesive, the parts are sufficiently strongly bonded to each other and left for the setting time of the adhesive composition. The setting time is indicated in the instructions and for different formulations it differs.
  • On the final stage conduct a visual inspection of the quality of the seam. The seam must be cleaned with a file or sandpaper if necessary. If the seam is exposed to high humidity, it is waterproofed.

This technological process is universal for all compositions and allows you to glue not only metal, but also glass, ceramics, plastic.

Not a single step of the process can be skipped, this will lead to a deplorable and unpredictable result. It is necessary to more precisely consider the actions performed at each stage.

An important step that affects the reliability and durability of the connection is the preparation of the surfaces to be joined before gluing them. The adhesive composition cannot normally be fixed on a dirty or rusty surface, so you should first go through the junction with sandpaper with a grit of 120-240. If there is any hard coating such as paint, varnish or other, it must also be removed. Sandpaper will leave small risks, they should not be afraid. They are needed for good adhesion of glue and metal. After machining parts are thoroughly degreased with a solvent or acetone.

You can use any solvent, as it is not able to damage metal parts. However, do not use gasoline or any paint thinners.

They leave a thin layer of additives on the surface of the metal, which will prevent the metal from sticking together firmly. After degreasing, waiting for the surface to dry, you can proceed to the gluing operation. Depending on the type of seam, static and deformation gluing are distinguished.

Static rigid bonding of metals

Applicable in structures that are not subject to dynamic deformation. The mixtures used for such gluing form a very hard and durable seam that can withstand heavy loads. In fact, two parts after such gluing form a monolithic structure that is very resistant to shear rupture. In this case, glue such as PURAFLEX 9155 or Klen-812 is used.

The disadvantage of a rigid connection of parts is the fragility of the seam, therefore, those structures that are subject to deformation require deformation bonding and the choice of another adhesive.

Rigid gluing has received the greatest application in construction and machine tool production.

Deformation bonding of metals

Expansion joints are used if the structure to be glued experiences various kinds of deformation or vibration. At the same time, the gluing is quite plastic and can stretch a little. The compositions used for such gluing are most often based on polyurethanes or epoxy resins with plasticizers. Bonding agents such as PURAFLEX 9140 or VK-20 can be recommended. They are indispensable in the assembly of structures subject to vibrations. Most often they are used in the assembly of doors, cabins, elevators.

The basis of most compositions that can glue various parts is epoxy resin. It has high adhesion to almost any material, such as metal, plastic, glass, ceramics. Under the action of hardeners, the epoxy polymerizes and becomes hard. Being brought to solid state with the right technology, epoxy resin without fillers is absolutely harmless to organisms. However, its use in industrial environment has a limitation due to the fact that when rejected, some part remains in its original form.

Uncured epoxy is a strong poison and can cause irreparable harm to the body.

Depending on the amount of filler and plasticizer, metal can be glued with epoxy resin so that both a static rigid seam and an elastic deformation seam are obtained.

Improving the quality of gluing

As stated earlier, big influence on how the composition glues the metal, has preliminary preparation surfaces. Using sandpaper, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned of rust and other solid contaminants. During the cleaning process, it is also necessary to remove the paint, old glue and other layers covering a bare metal surface. Sandpaper grit is best to take 120-240, it will cause the necessary risks, for which the glue will hook more strongly. After mechanical cleaning of the plane, it is thoroughly degreased with a solvent or acetone. It is not recommended to use gasoline, kerosene or other thinners for paints, they leave a thin layer of foreign material on the surface of the glued blanks, which will not allow them to be glued well.

Additional measures that will allow better bonding of metal parts are the use of special primers. They are applied to the surfaces to be glued before they are directly glued and serve to improve the adhesion between the adhesive and the material.

For example, no matter how good adhesion an epoxy resin and a metal surface has, BF-2 glue has a greater adhesion to metal from the available adhesives. Therefore, this primer is widely used among yachtsmen, where it is necessary that the epoxy firmly glue two parts together, and the seam is not afraid of moisture. To do this, on carefully prepared glued areas thin layer BF-2 is applied. Its layer is dried for an hour and a half at a temperature of 130 to 180 degrees. The main thing is that the glue layer dries, and does not burn out or overheat. Then you can glue it with epoxy resin according to the instructions, the glued seam with such a connection will be much stronger than without the use of BF-2.

Bonding materials with different coefficients of linear expansion

Different coefficients of linear expansion of materials lead to the fact that during heating and cooling, the adhesive joint experiences significant load deformation. It would be logical to judge that the seam itself should be quite elastic. Such materials are best glued together with a mixture based on polyurethane. In principle, there is no difference when bonding materials with different expansion coefficients and strain bonding. The main difference is only that in the first case, the glue line must withstand high temperatures.

Bonding of metals when exposed to moisture

The bare metal surface is quite susceptible to moisture. In this case, the metal is oxidized and corroded. Basically, the glued seam is very resistant to moisture and practically does not change its characteristics for a long time. However, if moisture is constantly present near the adhesive joint, the adhesive may absorb it. In this case, the metal will be directly exposed to moisture, which will undoubtedly cause a corrosion process.

In order to prevent these destructive processes, the adhesive seams are additionally sealed with some kind of waterproof coating. For example, a layer of paint.

In the case when it is necessary to glue metal with a porous material, the pores of which can easily conduct moisture, this porous material should also be preliminarily waterproofed by applying paint, varnish or similar waterproofing to it.

"Liquid nails" suitable for humidity conditions

In conclusion, I would like to note that everyone can glue metal parts together. Competent selection of glue and materials for gluing, as well as careful surface preparation, according to the material presented in the article, make glued metal joining a real alternative to electric welding. In this case, materials that cannot be welded can be glued together. Materials such as metal and plastic, ceramics, stone, wood. Almost anything can be glued.
