Wall decoration with fabric. Do-it-yourself wall upholstery with fabric: three ways of drapery

Wall decoration with fabric can be done in four ways: stretching the material, gluing, upholstery and surface draping. Any of them improves sound insulation, allows you to hide wall defects and helps keep the heat in the room.

It is permissible to use any fabric as a finishing material for walls, however, it is desirable that it be sufficiently dense. Synthetic fabrics have proven themselves well - durable, easy to work with and do not require special care.

Another possible variant- fabrics used for furniture upholstery. They are durable, resistant to mechanical damage, moisture resistant. For drapery, you need a light and well-shaped material.

You can choose the material and method of finishing, having previously studied the photo various interiors using this approach.

It is important to remember that if the room has high humidity, this method of wall decoration will not work.

Stretching the fabric

The technology for decorating walls with fabric is quite simple.
You will need:

  • wooden slats;
  • dowels and screws;
  • building level (hydraulic level);
  • nails and hammer;
  • tape measure, pencil;
  • screwdriver

A free space is formed between the wall and the stretched textile, equal to the height of the used rail. If necessary, insulation can be placed in this air pocket or soundproofing material. To fix the material, a special glue is used, while the joints are carefully sealed so that it does not leak onto the fabric.

When choosing a material, the properties of textiles are taken into account - for light ones, a heater of the same color is chosen, the dark one will shine through.

Working process

Along the entire perimeter of the room, rail mounting lines are drawn using a pencil, tape measure and building level. The lines should be located at the same height from the floor and ceiling, while the distance between them should also be maintained so that the fixed fabric is stretched evenly and there are no distortions.

With the help of dowels and self-tapping screws, wooden slats are fixed on the marked line.

For further action two pairs of hands are required. The fabric must be stretched evenly and tightly enough. At the points of attachment to the rails, it is tucked in twice to prevent breaks. They are nailed with the help of small carnations, a piece of skin is preliminarily placed under each. Another possible way fixings - on furniture staples.

On the final stage the places of attachment of textiles to the rails are covered with a plinth or decorative strips.

Sticking fabric

Sticking is the most popular, but rather laborious process.

Surface preparation

Before you start decorating the walls with a fabric with your own hands, you need to prepare the surfaces.

This will require:

  • putty knife;
  • plaster;
  • paper or newspapers;
  • sandpaper;
  • nitro varnish (for stains on the walls, if any).

Operating procedure:

1. Using a spatula, the surface of the wall is cleaned.
2. All irregularities and recesses are sealed with a plaster solution. Wait until it dries completely.
3. The entire surface of the wall is sealed with paper or newspapers. When the glue dries, sand the wall using sandpaper.
4. If after all these operations there are stains on the wall, they are treated with nitro-lacquer so that they do not appear on the fabric.

Fabric preparation

Unlike wallpaper, textiles are glued to the wall not in cuts, but in one piece. It is advisable to choose the widest possible cut so that there are as few joints as possible. If this is not possible, then the wall is measured, the strips of material are sewn together, leaving a margin at the top and bottom. The seams are ironed from the wrong side, the finished cut is rolled up.

The material is tested for shrinkage - a small flap is measured, immersed in water, and then dried. They measure it again, and if its dimensions have decreased, then the entire cut prepared for work is soaked, dried and ironed.

Operating procedure

Furniture glue can be applied immediately to the entire surface of the wall, other adhesives are applied at intervals, on separate sections so that it doesn't dry out.

Work begins with the upper section of the wall. The fabric is applied and stretched. This operation will require 2 people - one will hold the roll, the second will glue the finishing material and carefully smooth it with a roller so that it lies evenly and tightly.

The tissue is temporarily fixed with small nails. Align and at the same time fix by ironing with an iron, driving the device from top to bottom. When heated, the glue will harden, securely fixing the textiles on the wall. It is required to iron the entire surface of the wall several times so that there are no missed sections.

When the work is finished, the excess canvas on the ceiling and near the floor is carefully cut off, trying not to fray the edge of the material. Places of cuts are additionally coated with glue.

The process of complete solidification of the glue takes about 3 days. After this period, the fabric is carefully examined, if air bubbles are visible on the surface, they are carefully pierced and ironed.

The final stage is the design of the edges with molding, plinth or baguette.

Drapery

Draping the walls with fabric will require the involvement of an assistant.

For finishing, you will need a large canvas, the width of which is significantly larger than the perimeter of the room - this is necessary to create folds.

The work does not involve fixing the fabric over the entire surface of the wall, most often the textile is fixed on a bar located near the ceiling, and below it falls freely.

Materials and tools that will be required for drapery:

Wall preparation

Before draping the wall with textiles, the wall surface is cleaned with a spatula, wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust. Large and small cracks are sealed with plaster. After the solution dries, they pass over the surface with sandpaper, then remove the dust again.

Fabric preparation

In order for the material to lie in even, identical folds around the entire perimeter of the room, you need to prepare it. The easiest way is to mark the folds with pins, and then sew the fabric along the entire length along the top edge. In this case, a ready-to-work canvas with already made folds is obtained. Forming them at the stage of nailing the fabric to the wall is much more difficult, and the end result may not be satisfying.

Operating procedure

Using a level, draw a line around the entire perimeter of the room on which the rail will be installed.

The canvas is folded along the edge, fixed along the intended line with the help of carnations. Rails are fixed on top of the fixed textiles with the help of self-tapping screws and a screwdriver. Fasteners are placed no further than 30 cm from each other.

After mounting the rails around the entire perimeter of the room, they proceed to fixing the fabric from below. To understand all the intricacies of the work, it is recommended to watch a video in which the process is filmed in detail.

Upholstery

To upholster the walls with a fabric carriage tie, you will first need to install special frame. It will not be easy to cope with the task on your own, but if you wish, this can also be done.

Upholstery will require a dense and durable fabric that is breathable and resistant to sunlight.

You will also need to create a sketch with which you can calculate the amount of material and fastening ties. The width of the cut should be greater than the height of the wall (about 10 cm). The screed can be made in the form of squares or rhombuses, a specific pattern is achieved by the location of the fastening strips (vertically or diagonally).

The fastener itself can be made of the same fabric as the upholstery, or it can be contrasting.

Operating procedure:

  1. The surface of the wall is pasted over with heat and sound insulation. The degree of relief will depend on the thickness of the layer finished finish- the larger the layer, the more spectacular the walls will look.
  2. Textile material is marked along the entire length (marks are made in which the fabric will be fixed with nails to the wall). It is impossible to make mistakes during work - each puncture will be noticeable, it cannot be removed.
  3. An assistant is used for work. The upper edge of the canvas is glued along the ceiling. Nails are driven into the marked places, acting from top to bottom, placing the material evenly, making sure that there are no distortions.

Upholstery or gluing walls with fabric - spectacular way room finishing. Using this method, it is easy to mask the flaws of walls and communications. However, it is worth remembering that the textile surface accumulates a large number of dust, so it must be regularly looked after: vacuum and remove stains in a timely manner.

Stylish and unusual wall decor with fabrics is a great way to create special atmosphere in the living rooms of the house. This finishing option allows you to bring zest to any design, make it eye-catching and as comfortable as possible for living. The work on decorating walls with fabrics should begin with the choice of materials. This applies to the type and quality of paintings, their colors. Appropriate colors, the presence of patterns or their absence will affect the possibility of a complete or partial change in the interior. You also need to carefully study the information on mounting methods and choose the one that the owners can do with their own hands. Consider the advice and instructions of experts on the choice of fabrics, their fixation, the rules for subsequent care, and you can easily transform your apartment and make it unique.

The history of wall decoration with fabric

The use of fabrics for wall decoration dates back to Ancient Rome. Craftsmen made luxurious canvases from wool, linen, painted with patterns. The widespread use of such materials arose in the XII century and in Western Europe. The so-called tapestries were woven carpets that completely covered the walls. Of course, only representatives of the nobility could afford such a luxury. Biblical motifs became the main plot of such fabrics. Later (around the 15th century) in Paris, a completely new catchy look of the “millefleur” paintings was created. Them main feature was the allocation in the center of a hero, plot, animal. The background of such fabrics was dark, and around the woven thematic center there were more numerous small flowers and leaves. And in 1633, the Gobelin brothers created a large manufactory for the production of similar fabrics for decorating houses. Such canvases are known today: they are known to us under the name of tapestries. Their widespread use ceased after the appearance of paper wallpapers in the 18th century.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of fabric wall decoration is the creation of a special homely atmosphere: even wooden decoration is unable to ennoble the interior so much. Other advantages of decorating walls with fabrics include:

  • the possibility of creating a common composition of decoration and identical upholstery of upholstered furniture;
  • environmental friendliness of most materials;
  • increased sound insulation of walls;
  • high resistance of tissues to mechanical damage;
  • maintaining good vapor permeability of the walls;
  • quick installation without joints (or with only 1-2 joints on a long wall);
  • the possibility of additional imperceptible sound insulation and insulation (although not feasible with all types of fabric fastening).

As for the disadvantages of such decoration, it is worth remembering: the fabric will collect dust, so it will require frequent cleaning. Canvases in sunny rooms can fade quickly. The price of the material itself (even when attaching the fabric with your own hands) is quite high, and fixing the fabric near electrical points is quite a difficult job.

Material selection

The best solution for decorating walls with fabric in residential areas will be the choice of special canvases designed specifically for fastening as a finish. They are completely safe (painted with harmless paints), retain their brightness well for a long time, but are very expensive. Inexpensive options include furniture fabrics (jacquard, tapestry). The dense weave of the fabrics provides lightness while maintaining integrity. Such fabrics burn out slowly. An additional plus is to create good sound insulation in the rooms. It is acceptable to use natural fabrics with a less dense weave and, accordingly, less wear resistance (linen, cotton and sisal in its pure form or with a small percentage of viscose). The use of such materials allows you to create a special comfort and guarantees an environmentally friendly interior decoration. Light and translucent fabrics (taffeta, cambric) are least often used for interior decoration. They are suitable for decorating individual sections of the walls.

Fabric fastening methods

When choosing a mounting method, it is necessary to take into account the complexity of the work. If pasting the wall and stretching the fabric onto a strong frame is within the power of everyone, then doing a neat drapery or upholstery with your own hands without skills is almost impossible. In addition, in any of the ways to fix the canvases, 1-2 assistants are needed. Correctly leveling or raising the fabric is possible only when decorating a small section of the wall. To decorate the entire room, one pair of hands will simply not be enough. Also pay attention to the complexity of preparing for work: some methods require perfect alignment walls. Otherwise, it will be impossible to achieve a neat fit of the fabric.

If necessary additional insulation and soundproofing the room, choose a method of fastening in which auxiliary materials can be placed under the fabric.

Stretching the fabric

To stretch the fabric on the wall, you will need: slats (nailed along the perimeter of the wall), small nails or a furniture stapler (for attaching the canvas), a piece of fabric (the size is determined by the size of the wall + 3-4 extra cm along all edges for fixing), building level, dowel. The order of work is as follows:

  1. Under the level, the locations of the rails along the perimeter of the wall are marked. They must be strictly parallel so that the surface of the web is not overtightened.
  2. The fabric is neatly trimmed (you should get a perfect rectangle or square).
  3. The slats are fixed with dowels to the wall.
  4. The fabric is double-tucked 1.5-2 cm in the upper part. Then it is tucked with small carnations or furniture staples to the top rail.
  5. The fabric is stretched to the bottom rail, folds are also made at the bottom and the fabric is fixed. A similar fastening is carried out on the sides.

Under the stretched fabric, you can fix a layer of sound insulation or insulation. They are attached directly to the wall.

Sticking fabric

To glue the fabric, you will need the following tools and materials: a piece of fabric for decoration (2 cuts can also be used for a long wall), putty, spatula, paper, paper wallpaper glue, fine sandpaper, furniture glue, iron, small nails and slats. Gluing work is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. The fabric is checked for deformation: a small piece of it should be wetted and dried. If it has decreased in size, then the selected cut is completely soaked, dried and smoothed. This will prevent shrinkage of the fabric in the future.
  2. The wall is cleaned with a spatula, if necessary, leveled with putty. Glue for paper wallpaper is applied to the wall and paper is glued, which, after drying, is rubbed with sandpaper. If stains are found on the wall, you need to treat these areas with nitro-lacquer.
  3. The wall is covered furniture varnish, the stretched fabric is carefully glued from top to bottom (work for two people), leveled, ironed to set the glue. Additionally, it can be knocked out from above with slats and nails for the most accurate fixation. They can be removed after 6-12 hours. Excess fabric is trimmed, the edges are processed with glue.
  4. After 3 days, if there are tubercles, you need to break through each of them and re-walk with an iron. At the top and bottom you can install skirting boards, baguettes.

Drapery

For proper drapery of the wall with your own hands, you will need: self-tapping screws, a rail (length equal to the length of the wall), a piece of fabric (2-3 times longer than the length of the wall and 10-15 cm more than its height), small carnations, building level. The work on fixing the canvas is carried out as follows:

  1. At the top, the location of the rail under the level is marked. The wall is cleaned of debris and dust: there is no need to level the surface.
  2. The fabric is tucked 3-4 cm under the rail on the left and fixed on it with the first nail from under the bottom. At the same time, the canvas should have an allowance of 5-7 cm on top. After 10-15 cm, a fold is formed along the length of the cut, it is fixed under the rail (on the back side) with a carnation. Similar work is done to the end of the cut. On the right, its edge is also tucked under the bottom of the rail and fixed.
  3. The rail with the typed-on fabric is fixed along established markup. Fastening is carried out with self-tapping screws from the front part (that is, the caps of the studs will be located on the side of the wall). In the lower part, the fabric is tucked in 2 times and gently tacked or, in a similar way, fixed on another rail.

When using a rail at the bottom, it is very difficult to withstand an even wave falling and there is no deformation. Therefore, the best solution would be to fix the canvas only on the top bar.

Upholstery

Upholstery is one of the most labor-intensive and complicated ways wall decorations. For work you need: a piece of fabric (the length and width of the wall + 10 cm of stock on all sides), slats for the frame, dowels, small carnations, spatula, putty, furniture glue and glue for heavy wallpaper, iron, thick insulation, building level. For wall upholstery carriage coupler you need to do the following work:

  1. Clean the wall with a spatula and putty to level the surface.
  2. Make a drawing for the required upholstery pattern (with squares or diamonds). Mark the location of the rails under the level and then fix these rails on the wall with dowels (without a frame, the finished decor will have an insignificant volume, and all its luxurious look will be lost).
  3. Draw a similar pattern (just like the slats are located!) On a drawing paper and make holes at the junction of the slats. Using the blank as a stencil, transfer these points to the fabric.
  4. Glue a thick insulation over the slatted frame with glue for heavy wallpaper.
  5. On top of the wall above the rack frame (1-2 cm higher), glue the fabric with furniture glue and walk with an iron, additionally line with carnations (then they can be removed). Stretch the canvas to the floor, and gently moving from top to bottom, nail the material at the previously marked points. Thus, each point must clearly coincide with the intersection of the rack frame located on the wall.

Stylistic directions

Conduct original design rooms, using fabric canvases, you can completely different styles. The highlight is the use of fabric materials instead of ordinary wallpaper. Fabric trim will look appropriate and beautiful in the following areas:

  • art deco: for the direction it is recommended to select contrasting canvases with large repeating patterns;
  • modern: materials with abstractions, bright repeating patterns or special models with one large pattern (similar to photo wallpapers) are suitable for styling in this direction;
  • urban: for the style, plain fabrics of a light, soft color (or models with discreet patterns) will be predominant;
  • ethnic style: fabrics with zigzag patterns of different colors are suitable for direction;
  • style of the 50s: bright fabrics with repeating smooth patterns perfectly complement the direction;
  • oriental: materials in dark color with gold or silver patterns;
  • classic: great solution there will be a choice of canvases with a dark background and eye-catching, repeating patterns, stripes.

Wall decoration in the living room

In a spacious room, you can decorate the walls with fabrics in various ways. To the most profitable options arrangements include:

  • fabric decor for all living room walls;

It is possible to carry out gluing of canvases or stretching them for each surface. It is allowed to use two identical color scheme materials with different patterns (for example, decorate a couple of walls with a canvas with stripes, the rest with a fabric with ornate patterns).

  • allocation of a recreation area;

Behind a sofa and a pair of armchairs designed for relaxing with friends and family leisure, you can place fabrics of any brightness and saturation (not contradicting the style and overall color scheme). Unusual finish will give the room an original look, and at the same time will not distract the owners from the rest.

  • stylization of the wall located opposite the recreation area.

This design allows you to highlight the wall opposite the sofa and armchairs. For decoration, it is recommended to select fabrics with soft colors and discreet patterns or no patterns at all.

Wall decoration in the bedroom

Unusual bedroom decoration fabric trim allows you to emphasize its originality and comfort. The best options for using textiles in a living room include:

  • selection of the head of the bed;

Here, the usual gluing of fabric or full drapery of the wall is allowed. It will be unusual to look not at the full decoration of the surface, but at the selection of a rectangular zone behind the headboard (although the fabric should slightly protrude beyond the headboard on the sides). You can also make a stylish illuminated niche, inside which the fabric will be pasted.

  • allocation of a sleeping bed;

In this embodiment, you can place a couple of strips of fabric on the sides of the bed (for example, behind the bedside tables). It will also look good and gluing, nailing canvases on two walls, near which the bed is located (that is, behind the headboard and to the left or right of the sleeping bed).

  • highlighting the entrance or wall opposite the bed.

It will create special comfort and help the owners start every morning in a great mood.

Cleaning of fabric finishes must be carried out in a dry way. Any wetting of the surface can lead to the appearance of stains and streaks on it. Therefore, to carefully remove the accumulated dust, you need to use a vacuum cleaner. In advance, you will need to purchase a special nozzle (with a soft coating) designed to clean furniture and various textile coverings. It will also help to maintain the original state of the fabric finish by following these recommendations:

  1. When installing the air conditioner, keep in mind that dust particles carried by the flow will settle on the surface of the canvases. Therefore, it is not recommended to hang the air conditioner against a fabric wall or in a room with walls completely decorated with fabric.
  2. In sunny rooms, fabric fading should be prevented. Therefore, the finish should be immediately placed on the walls, where they do not fall Sun rays, or close the windows with thick curtains during the period when the sun enters the room.
  3. In rooms with fabric trim, low humidity should be maintained. If necessary, a dehumidifier is recommended.

Textile wallpapers as an alternative to fabric finishes

A good substitute for gluing or stuffing fabric on the walls can be textile wallpaper. In their appearance, they are somewhat similar to ordinary fabrics, but at the same time they are produced using a special technology: by gluing a fabric or individual layers of fibers onto a base. The very basis of materials can be paper or non-woven. The first option has affordable price, but the duration of the preservation of the original appearance of such a finish is rather doubtful: a heavy canvas can last for many years or soon begin to peel off. Textile wallpapers on non-woven base have more high price but also last longer. For additional protection this type of finish can be covered with a colorless varnish or polymer film. This ensures minimal damage to the materials and their delayed fading in the sun. But you need to stick textile wallpaper only on a perfectly flat wall. Despite the possibility of hiding irregularities structural finish, the presence of differences will lead to a rapid peeling of the material.

Conclusion

The correct selection of fabric in terms of composition, quality and color is a guarantee original decoration walls in the house. True, it is worth using such materials only in living and living rooms: in the kitchen or in the hallway, they will be subject to significant negative impacts and will soon lose their attractiveness. In addition to choosing suitable fabrics, we advise you to pay special attention to available options cloth fastening. Most of them can be carried out without the skills to perform repair work. But be sure any method of fastening should be carried out with strict observance of the procedure for preparing fabrics and the wall itself. It is stronger than paper, and if stains appear, they can be easily removed with powder and water. The fabric can mask all the bumps on the wall.

Drapery of walls with fabric is done in three ways: stretching the fabric under the rail, stretching the fabric on the rail and sticking the fabric on the wall.

Modern fabrics are able to retain their color for several years, even if the sun constantly shines on them. Pasting the walls with fabric will allow you to use the same fabric for window decoration and for the manufacture of other elements. decorative finishes rooms. Finishing surfaces with a fabric with your own hands requires special skill and skill, but if you wish, you can learn this. It is important to properly prepare the walls for work and the fabric itself.

Preparing walls and textiles

Preparing walls for wallpapering is similar to preparing for wallpapering.

Previously, all old finishes are removed from the walls. If necessary, the plaster is completely or partially renewed. Particular attention is paid to sealing cracks and cracks. To do this, you need to use a fairly thick solution. If the defects are significant, it makes sense to add a plasticizer to the solution. After the plaster has completely dried, the surface of the walls is well primed.

Finally, putty must be applied to the walls. Better choose now good mix with antifungal effect. Putty is applied thin layer with a spatula. Try to level the wall as much as possible by applying slightly larger layers to the recesses. Just don't overdo it.

In the process of preparing the walls, it is important to consider one point. Often, as a result of a snug fit to the surface of the reinforcement, rust appears. Stains must be treated with nitro enamel or sealed with foil. It is better to combine these two methods. Otherwise, rust will show through the fabric.

The fabric preparation process deserves special attention. First you need to cut off a small piece from it and wet it with warm water. When the flap dries, look at it: if the fabric has shrunk significantly, then it is better to wet the entire fabric completely, dry it and iron it lightly.

When fitting walls with fabric, the main thing is not to pull it - the fabric should lie naturally on the walls.

Next, proceed to cut the fabric. You need to measure each wall and cut the canvas so that you get a large piece that will stretch over the surface. At the same time, for greater convenience, experts recommend cutting the canvas into several strips of a certain width, which correspond to the height of the ceiling. Then all the strips need to be sewn together with a double seam.

When cutting, keep in mind that in any case, allowances must be provided on all sides so that the material fits well. Try to make at least 7 cm of allowance on each side of the canvas, while at the transitions to another wall you need to increase the width of the allowance.

Wall decoration with textiles

So, the wall and fabric are prepared. Now you can take a closer look at several ways to decorate walls with fabric. There are two main methods - this is gluing the walls with textiles and fastening it with small wooden slats.

Cloth wrapping

Methods for decorating walls with fabric: a - fastening a new thing to the wall, b - checking the verticality of the folds using a plumb line on a cord.

First prepare the glue. It is better to choose ordinary wallpaper glue, on the packaging of which it is indicated that it can also be used for textiles. You need to add some PVA glue to it. But its amount should be small, since when the PVA dries, it becomes white. The mixture should be allowed to brew for 30-60 minutes.

As a rule, glue does not need to be applied to the fabric, so it makes sense not to spare the mixture for the wall. Apply glue with a wide brush. At the same time, they do not need to cover the entire wall at once. The wall should be processed as the fabric is glued. First, the first layer of glue is applied, part of which is absorbed into the surface, and after 3-5 minutes - the second thicker one.

You need to apply textiles from the top corner of the wall. Therefore, it is advisable to work together. The canvas is firmly pressed against a well-lubricated wall with glue, gradually leveled, and then finally leveled with a rubber spatula or foam roller. Then it is gradually glued from below, after which the gluing to the side continues in the same order. You can also work out the textiles first at the top, and then gradually guide it down. Don't forget to stretch the fabric.

When the process of working with one wall comes to an end, you need to temporarily fix the canvas with thin wooden planks that are attached to nails around the perimeter. At the same time, make an additional stretch. Nails do not need to be fully fixed. Temporary fixation allows the canvas to dry completely without slipping off the surface. Only after the glue has completely dried can the strips be carefully removed.

Each wall is finished in this way. Excess fabric from the bottom and top can be cut off after the work is completed, but the side excess is best cut off immediately during work. characteristic feature adhesive setting will be absolute dryness to the touch and no visible spots of moisture on the material.

Probably everyone, at least once, but thought about the walls upholstered in fabric. Photos on the Internet and fashion magazines fuel interest in this method of wall decoration. Such interiors look luxurious and stylish. And, importantly, by upholstering the walls with fabric, you can realize ideas that are not available in other materials.

We do not say that upholstery with fabric is The best decision for decorating walls. It has pros and cons. However, as with any method of finishing. And, if you think that there are still more advantages for you, we are ready to bring your plans to life.

We have been in the upholstery business for over twenty years. We went to study in France. Participated in the work on the restoration of the entrance lodges of the Bolshoi Theatre. We worked with well-known and really cool designers. We have learned a lot and are able to do a lot. We have objects in Moscow, Paris and Nice on our account.

Why upholster walls with fabric

The main reason why our customers upholster walls with fabric is not the comfort or soundproofing of the room. There are cheaper options for this.

We believe that the main thing is the desire to conform to certain ideas about prestige. For 20 years of our work, no one has chosen cheap satin or calico. Silk, linen, wool and other natural materials are chosen for the walls.

Our customers know very well why they need fabric-covered walls and know how to count money. Wall upholstery is a really expensive service, and other finishes are considered before ordering it. And, as strange as it may sound, despite the high cost, this is a beautiful and stylish way to save money.

For example, the walls of the office of a serious leader can be covered with panels of solid wood. Wood is the most expensive finishing method. Its big plus is durability. Such an interior is almost eternal. It can serve without changes for decades. And if necessary, the tree can be restored, updated and refreshed.

Wall fabric, even expensive, will cost half as much, but it will also last a long time. And it will also look luxurious. You will win in price without losing in quality and style. The difference is, of course, approximate. Depends on the selected wood and selected fabric. By upholstering the walls with fabric, you will get a “soft” interior that will be with you for many years. When we say soft, we don't mean plump. No, the walls will look flat and even. As an alternative, you can use expensive fabric wallpapers. But, at a comparable price, the fabric looks nicer. The fabric reflects the light in a different way, the wallpaper cannot do that.

Or, for example, take a home cinema. Building it right is not cheap. When you invest a lot of effort and money in its development, you always want to do it "right". In this case conventional coatings not suitable for walls: wallpaper, decorative plaster, MDF facades - all these materials will distort the sound. The professional solution is to use acoustic panels. Such panels cost up to 7000r for square meter. It is clear that although cheap samples work, they look according to the price.

Using fabric, you will not only hide the panels, but also get a beautiful cool interior. And at the same time retain the necessary sound characteristics.

The most common example is the fabric on the walls in the bedroom. In any case, in the bedrooms we work most often. Building portals assure that in such a room you will breathe better. You will not hear what is happening behind the wall and save on heating.

It's all more marketing. In fact, you and your designer get another way to get what most people can't. You can make walls and curtains from the same fabric. This technique works well with wall panels, but even better when all the walls are upholstered with fabric. And it definitely makes your interior head and shoulders above others!

Upholstery with fabric is akin to buying an expensive and prestigious car. He is beautiful, pleasant and delightful. Is it possible to do without it? Yes, you can. Any car "in a simpler way" will also be able to deliver you from one place to another. But, if the budget allows, then why not use it?

We offer

What does a customer expect when they apply for a wall upholstery fabric service? Yes, in general, as always, a job well done.

What do we mean by quality work? In our opinion, everything is simple. The fabric is stretched throughout. The drawing is even and neat. It organically joins with skirting boards and door frames. And of course, in the process of upholstery, other trim elements should not suffer.

This is what the room looks like after all stages of work are completed. The walls are upholstered with fabric, the plinth is in place, the door is where it should be. Looking at the photo, it's hard to believe that this is not a wallpaper. This is, indeed, the fabric that we pulled over the walls.

Like any other work, wall upholstery with fabric can be done in different ways. The result will also be different. The more experience the master has, the better the result will be. For example, for many materials adjoining to other parts of the interior always raises many questions. Also with fabric. To make everything look beautiful, we brought the fabric behind the platbands and the plinth. This can be done if this possibility is foreseen at the design stage. In this video, we show how it is implemented in practice.

We installed switches and sockets on special podiums. Such podiums allow sockets to remain flush with the plane of the wall. This eliminates the effect of pushing the socket into the wall. Here is a video in more detail.

We also made for all lamps that are mounted on the walls.

We do not work alone on the site. All around us are people who do their part of the work. The most frequent question that we hear from colleagues "in the shop" is how do we wrap the fabric like this? As in any other profession, we have our own tricks and "chips". Really, internal corners can be made without visible traces of fasteners and any additional decorating cords and braids. This video clearly shows how it turns out.

Well, and most importantly - we know how to stretch the fabric to get a dense surface with an even pattern. We worked on this room for about 10 days. Both we, the designer and, most importantly, the customer, were pleased with the result. Watch the video of what we did!

And yes, it's really fabric, not wallpaper. We installed the crate and "shot" the fabric to it. The ceiling height in this room is three and a half meters. The width of the fabric is 135 centimeters. We needed about fifty meters of fabric for the whole room. The rapport of the fabric is almost 100 centimeters. With less rapport, we would have kept within 45m.

Our fabric with bright vertical stripes. To make the room look more organic, we did not make the transition of the pattern from one wall to another. Instead, we stretched the fabric so that the stripes were symmetrical.

Is it difficult to upholster the walls with fabric?

We think yes, it is difficult. Of course, fabrics are different. Some are easier to work with, some are harder. But in general - yes, it is difficult. This is probably why it will be difficult for you to find a video that clearly shows the results of wall upholstery work.

Do you need experience to succeed? We are sure - yes, it is necessary. It's easy to ruin the material. It is enough to "unguess" with the stretching of the fabric. And if you make a mistake, a second chance is very expensive.

The fabric is stretched in one piece. The canvas matches the size of the wall. In many canvases, it is necessary to make holes - from doorways to sockets. When the fabric is stretched, all the holes should be in place. If you make a mistake, you will have to redo the entire wall.

A simple example: this is not a wall, but a ceiling, above the stage of one of the home concert halls, on which we worked for about three months. But the essence of what has been said does not change.

There are about 60 holes in the ceiling for lamps and stage light. The wires for the equipment are so long that they cannot be placed in the sockets while the fabric is being worked on. I would love to make them shorter, but it did not work out. This length is needed for the installation of equipment. To stretch the fabric, you need to make holes in it and stretch the wires through them. That is, first we cut through the fabric, stretch the leads of the wires, and then we stretch the fabric.

The cost of the fabric is more than one hundred euros per meter. The room is large and it took a lot of fabric. If you are not an architect or a serious decorator, then most likely you think that it is easy to buy 250-300m of expensive fabric. This is usually not the case. The factory was able to produce the volume we needed in 4 months. Then the fabric was brought from Europe for another 2 months. Six months have passed from the moment the fabric was chosen to the moment it was received. I don’t even want to think how much time and money would have to be spent in case of an error with any of these holes.

We will show on the example of one of our orders how we upholster walls.

This is the bedroom of one of our customers from Novye Veshki. We decided to upholster only one wall, the rest were covered with wallpaper.

When upholstering walls, the fabric is mounted on the crate. As a rule, everyone is fighting for space and wants the sheathing layer to be as thin as possible. We usually use 8mm thick battens. Each house has its own walls, somewhere brick, somewhere concrete, and somewhere drywall. In some cases, it is possible to install a crate with a thickness of only 4 mm. But it depends a lot on the walls of the room.

We fasten the crate with a large pneumatic stapler. We use powerful staples that can hold the tension of the fabric. It's not obvious, but it takes a lot of effort to stretch the fabric. On long walls, this is a task for two people. Add to that the weight of the material itself. Thick fabric for an eight-meter wall can be heavier than a large weight in gym. If from time to time you go there, remember how much it weighs.

As you can see in this photo, we do not iron the fabric before installation. First, it doesn't make sense. The fabrics are sewn together in the workshop and delivered to the site rolled up. They are the size of a wall. With such dimensions, you want it, you don’t want it, but the fabric has to be folded. Otherwise, it cannot be brought to the facility. Therefore, it will still be in the folds. And secondly, if the fabric is ironed, it will be much more difficult to work with it. It becomes not so plastic and flexible. We remove all folds and creases by stretching the fabric.

Many people think that in order to stretch the fabric, it needs to be moistened and allowed to dry. After drying, the fabric will “sit down” and everything will turn out smoothly and beautifully. This is not true. Most modern fabrics do not tolerate such treatment. Gloves on hands - insurance in case your hands sweat.

To remove wrinkles and creases, the fabric needs to be stretched. If something is left, then the material is not stretched tight enough. We succeeded. As you can see, there are no irregularities. By the way, many fabrics stretch a little after the first day on the wall and require tightening. That is why the upholstery of the walls with fabric takes quite a long time.

What's up

The walls of the rooms we visit are covered with wallpaper. This is true in 99% of cases. Everyone is used to the way the wall looks. Naturally, when ordering wall upholstery with fabric, both the customer and his designer expect to see something similar to wallpaper. This is not easy to achieve. After all, fabric is a material with different properties. Agree, the room in the photo looks like the walls are covered in wallpaper?

But it's fabric. We work so that the walls do not seem puffy. The key to success is in well-chosen thicknesses of the crate and synthetic winterizer. When ordering upholstery from us, you will receive walls with evenly stretched fabric.

Unlike most of our colleagues in the workshop, we can upholster walls without using decorative braid. The photo above shows that the door frames were in place before us. And this video shows a fragment of a wall with fabric tucked in on all sides. As a decorative element, the braid remains possible and is placed on the instructions of the designer or customer. But with us it becomes optional.

During the work of the workshop, we have made more than a hundred premises. This number may seem small, but it is actually a lot. The service for upholstery of walls with fabric is specific, niche. Not everyone needs. Here are a few items we have worked on.

Moscow, Donskoy lane.

Five minutes walk from the Donskoy Monastery and we are there. Preparatory work has been carried out. A crate is mounted on the walls and a soft substrate is installed. We will not discover America if we say that the walls were upholstered with fabric before. This craft is not one hundred years old. Fifty years ago, the substrate was made of cotton wool. Now we use hypoallergenic synthetic winterizer, polyester material.

The main purpose of the synthetic winterizer is to be on the wall and fill the space. It does not make sense to consider it as some kind of serious heat or sound insulation. He's not for that.

Unlike wallpaper, the fabric is soft and stretchy. You need to control the entire wall at once. A little undertighten or overtighten - and the pattern "floated". But the same property allows you to hide small irregularities in the walls. Within reason, of course.

How to check that the fabric is stretched evenly? It would be nice to have a laser builder that draws lines on the wall. But not every customer has it. For a quick assessment, you can do without rulers and levels. Just stand next to a wall and look along it. Everything will immediately become clear.

Curtain fabrics can be used for wall upholstery. Basically, the width of such fabrics is 280 cm. But sometimes 300cm and even 320cm. For upholstery, the fabric is folded in about 5 cm on each side. Because of this, two hundred and eighty centimeters is simply not enough to stretch the fabric on the wall. Therefore, fabrics for furniture are most often used in our work. These fabrics are sewn into a single fabric. If the fabric is with a pattern, then the pattern must be combined. Such seams are an indicator of the professionalism of a seamstress.

For some projects, it is important that the pattern flows from one wall to another. This is quite difficult, given that everything should turn out in a taut state. A lot depends on the quality of the work of the stuccoers. Remember the statements that there is no need to level the walls.

When is the right time to upholster the walls with fabric? Better - after the end of dusty work and cleaning. When the room is already clean. In practice, this is almost always impossible. AT big projects there are always slips. Someone didn’t manage to do something, didn’t take it into account, or made a mistake somewhere, and now: we are already working in parallel. If you have been to the facilities during the renovation, you understand what we mean. Either the deadlines do not allow, or something urgently needs to be completed.

Hanging fabric on the wall alone is pretty hard. The sheets are not small. I didn’t keep track, and some part of the fabric is light on the floor. It may not be dirty, but the fabric will get dirty for sure. If possible, we do it in two or three. This is not to say that you cannot do it alone, but this way the work goes faster.

How long does it take to upholster one room with fabric? There is no definite answer to this question. Several factors influence. Wall area is not an indicator. With the same area long wall with a small height will be done faster than a narrow but high one. With the same height, a room with fewer corners will be faster than a room with more corners. And, of course, the vacant room will be made before the room that has been turned into a warehouse, as is often the case at sites.

Suburb of the European capital

This is small room at the bedroom. During the renovation, it was decided to repaint the wood and replace the fabric on the walls. The room is old, it managed to see both fabric and wallpaper on its walls.

Previously, there was silk on the walls, and the wood was painted in beige and pink tones. The building is historical, almost a museum. It's just that nothing can be done. In order to carry out the work, our customer received permission from the local authorities for repairs.

An interesting point. There are several niches for technical needs in the room. So that they did not catch the eye, their hatches were also upholstered with fabric.

We did too. Upholstered hatches with cloth. The task was not easy, the doors of the niches turned out to be metal. It is impossible to nail fabric to them. This situation once again proves that repair is not an easy task. Constantly get out some "pitfalls" that complicate the work.

Everything worked out well. The work is done, the fabric is stretched, the pattern has not "floated". The planks in the photo are temporary fabric fixators. They don't last long. After we make sure that the fabric is stretched tightly and evenly, we will remove them.

The fabric is turned up, the development of threads on the material is parallel to the frieze. No traces of fasteners. This is exactly what we were looking for. The lower wall panels were only repainted. They didn't change. These panels are decades old. As we have already said, the building is old, when it was being built, there were no modern technologies. No laser levels. So the walls are a bit uneven. Skewed in geometry about one and a half centimeters. Thanks to the plasticity of the fabric, it is a stealthy hide. With wallpaper, such a trick would not work.

The cost of work

As with any service, the price for wall upholstery with fabric can be different. The cost depends on the fabric with which you have to work and the conditions in which this work will have to be performed.

At the moment, the cost of the service ranges from 3500 rubles to 6000 rubles per 1m2. This amount includes necessary materials for the manufacture of purlins and a soft lining, but upholstery fabric is not included.

Is it expensive or cheap? Is it worth saving on specialists, risking money, or not? Everyone will decide for himself. But if the "position obliges", and you want to get a guaranteed result, we will be happy to help you.

FAQ

Wall upholstery with fabric is a rare service. Not every designer or foreman has come across it in practice. The answers to these questions will help you navigate better.

Is it true that the fabric on the wall is a big dust collector?

This is partly true for urban apartments on the lower floors. But if it's about country house, then there is much less dust. In addition, the fabric on the walls can be cleaned and steamed, just as they do with upholstered furniture.

How to care for the fabric on the wall?

Most The best way- Contact a cleaning company. They know what and how to do. If you clean it yourself, you can use a vacuum cleaner. It is turned on at low power and with the help of a clean nozzle they simply vacuum the walls. Just like a sofa or armchair. Fabrics are different. There are fabrics with a dirt-repellent coating. Walls in such fabrics can be wiped with a cloth.

How much does the fabric cost?

Generally speaking, the cost is inexpensive upholstery fabric starts from 350r per meter. But let's not forget why the walls are upholstered with fabric at all. The main thing is prestige. To achieve this with cheap fabrics is unlikely. Therefore, the cost of fabric in such projects ranges from 3500 rubles to 6000 rubles per meter. There are more. Rarely less. For a small room, about 35m of fabric is required. If you calculate, it turns out that the cost of fabric for such work will be 120,000-250,000 rubles.

How much fabric do you need?

Fabric consumption depends on the geometry of the room, the pattern on the fabric and the customer's willingness to put up with additional seams. Let's explain. The fewer seams, the better. But in any room there are places where it’s a pity to let the whole canvas of fabric. The most typical example is the space between the door and the ceiling. If the pattern on the fabric allows, then it is more economical to do so.

Fabric for walls is considered rapports (drawings). Let's say your wall is 5m long, and the pattern is repeated every 80cm. In this case, for walls 3 m high, the length of one canvas will be 4 rapports. Or 320cm. Standard Width European fabrics 140cm, American 135cm. With such a fabric width for a five-meter wall, 4 canvases will be needed. If you want the pattern on the fabric to move from one wall to another, then 5 or even 6 canvases may be required. In total, for such a wall you will need from 12.8 m to 19.2 m. We did not count possible door and window openings that would reduce the amount of fabric. And they did not count possible hatches and doors that would increase this number. For wall upholstery with fabric, it is more correct to buy fabric with a margin, in case of a possible marriage. The two longest canvases are usually taken as a reserve. You can not do this, especially considering the cost of the fabric. But there is always a risk of getting a fabric with a marriage. Even in fabrics from cool factories. The defective fabric will be replaced for you, but you are guaranteed to lose time and the project will fail.

Is it possible to remove the fabric from the walls, wash it and put it back?

When draping walls with fabric, use different technologies. Some promise such an opportunity. In practice, most likely you are confronted with the fact that after washing the fabric will "sit down". This means that all cut holes will lose alignment. You will not be able to stretch the fabric the way it was originally. We believe that it is almost impossible to re-stretch the same fabric.

What to do first - upholster the walls with fabric or put skirting boards and platbands?

There is different solutions. It’s easier, and therefore cheaper, to first upholster the walls, and then cash out. This does not mean that the opposite is not possible. Can. But it is more expensive, more difficult and requires more skilled craftsmen. For example, in this case we are faced with the fact that the circles on upper parts the walls were not removable. The cornice on the ceiling was made of plaster and was also not removed. Instead of covering the fabric sections with a cornice and circular trim, we had to go around them with fabric. Of course, the work was done, but it took three times longer than it could.

How much will the dimensions of the room change after the upholstery of the walls with fabric?

The thickness of the crate is 8mm. The combination of crate + fabric will give a total of 9-10mm. In very rare cases, 8mm will remain or become 11mm. Accordingly, this will affect the thickness door frames and window slopes. The plinth will also move away from the wall by this amount.

Do I need to level the walls and bring them out as if for fine painting?

For a good result, even corners are important. The smoother the better. Especially for fabrics with geometric pattern. The even plane of the wall matters less (within reason, of course). What is completely superfluous is the finishing putty of the walls. Usage soft backing hide small bumps and roughness and they will not be noticeable.

How long should the wires be?

For us, short wires are better than long ones. Shorter wires - faster work. If the wires are short, then they can be placed in the socket at the time of installation. In practice, the length of the wires is set by the equipment. There should be enough wires to connect it.

Do you always need decorative cords or braid to decorate the adjoining fabric to other parts of the interior?

No. At competent work you can do without them. Braid or cord is not suitable for every interior.

How long does it take to upholster a room?

Upholstery with fabric is not an easy process. The material makes its own adjustments. For a small room of 12m2, a week is enough. Large rooms from 25m2 can take up to three weeks.

What is needed for wall upholstery with fabric from the customer?

Project. It is most important. Understanding what should come out in the end, what will be in sight, and what will be covered with furniture, we will do our work faster and better.

Do you work only in Moscow and the Moscow region?

The main place of our work is Moscow and the region. But if necessary, we travel to the regions. This is not easy, given the amount of materials and tools, but it is possible. Conditions are discussed individually.

The fabric on the walls should be in complete harmony with the rest of the textiles used in the design of the room.

Wall upholstery with fabric is one of the most modern ways finishes, allowing not only to create indoors unique design, but also to hide some imperfections on the surface of the walls. Decorating walls with fabric is in particular demand among owners of suburban housing, whose rooms are different high ceilings and large area walls. It is beautiful, durable and very original finish, which has become an excellent alternative to all existing finishing materials. Work is no different high level complexity and does not require the participation of qualified craftsmen. To succeed, it is important to strictly follow the rules of the technological process and choose the most suitable fabric correctly.

How to choose fabric

Upholstery of walls with fabric is carried out using artificial and natural materials, which can be purchased at specialized trade organizations. When choosing fabric for walls, you should first of all pay attention to:

  • jute;
  • jacquard;
  • cotton.

These are not only natural materials, they also have a number of other advantages. So, for example, by fixing such a fabric on the walls instead of wallpaper, you don’t have to worry about the right direction of the thread and how it will lie on the surface daylight. Mixed fabrics, which include natural fibers and viscose, are very popular. For work on finishing the premises, the form of release of such material is very convenient. These are rolls with a width of 140 to 280 cm and a fabric length of 100 m.

Artificial materials are used in cases where do-it-yourself wall decoration is carried out with fabric. Viscose and polyester, polyacryl and polyamide attract the attention of those who want to change the interior space of their home by the fact that they stretch perfectly, easily take any desired shape, long time do not lose their attractiveness.

Before proceeding with the work, it is necessary to choose the right not only the fabric intended for wall upholstery, but also the very place of its fixation.

Such decoration is not performed in the kitchen and hallway, passage area and rooms with high humidity. The photo shows exactly how you can decorate the room using bright expressive fabrics.

Wall decor with fabric is carried out in strict accordance with the technological process designed specifically for decorating walls with fabric. Compared to wallpaper, decoration material is more durable, easy to work with and durable. Fabrics for such decoration are easy to clean and do not accumulate household dust.

Synthetic fabrics are dense and moderately stretchy. They perfectly fit on any surface and hide the existing flaws and small defects.

Fabric fabrics made from synthetic fibers, have a high level of moisture resistance, are suitable for creating draperies, keep their shape for long period time, do not succumb to the negative effects of ultraviolet rays.

All these qualities are taken into account when choosing a fabric for use in the interior as a decorative wall covering.

Stretch

There are several ways, using which you can quickly and efficiently sheathe the walls with fabric yourself, without resorting to the help of qualified specialists. To stretch the synthetic fabric with your own hands, you need to prepare the appropriate tools and fasteners:

  • wooden slats;
  • dowel nails;
  • hammer and nails;
  • drill and screwdriver;
  • building level.

You will need a pencil and a ruler to measure the desired distance and make marks. The advantage of this method of decoration is that in the space between the canvas and the wall, formed during the work, soundproofing material can be laid.

The process begins with the installation of a kind of frame. A horizontal rail is attached around the entire perimeter of the room under the ceiling with the help of a dowel of nails. This design is also assembled along the skirting boards.

Fixing the fabric is carried out using furniture brackets, but when using a fairly dense fabric, you can use a hammer and furniture studs. The entire area of the sheathed surface must be covered with a cloth. Stretching is important to perform evenly, avoiding sagging of the fabric.

If furniture brackets are used for fixing, then it is quite enough to simply tuck the edge of the fabric, but when doing work with nails, a small piece of genuine leather should be placed under the head of each of them.

These measures will help to avoid tearing the fabric during stretching:

  1. The first fixing point is in the middle of the ceiling rail. Trying to evenly stretch the fabric, it is attached to the end of the rail in the direction in one direction, and then repeat all the steps in the other.
  2. After the operation is completed, the fabric is fixed to the lower rail fixed along the floor. They also start from the middle and gradually move away from the first fixation point in both directions at the same time.

During operation, it is necessary to constantly control the degree of tension in order to prevent either sagging or tearing of the fabric. At the end of the process, all attachment points are covered with moldings and skirting boards. The photo shows that the strict implementation of the rules allows you to achieve a positive result.

Sheathing the walls with fabric will not only hide the defects on the surface of the walls, but also create additional heat and sound insulation.

sticking

Before sticking the fabric on the wall, it is necessary to prepare the surface for the upcoming decoration. The use of this method of designing even small surfaces in the interior allows you to radically change the perception of the surrounding space. A wall pasted over with a spectacular fabric is a real decoration of the room, but in addition, this method of decoration allows you to clearly mark the boundaries of a certain area when zoning the space.

First you need to thoroughly prepare the surface of the wall:

  • remove the remaining old coating;
  • if necessary, putty or plaster is partially or completely renewed;
  • the wall surface is processed primer composition deep penetration;
  • all metal parts found on the surface of the wall and protruding through the plaster are coated with nitro enamel to prevent rust stains from appearing on the fabric.

After this, the preparation of the wall to be glued can be considered completed, and it's time to start marking the material. When starting to decorate the walls with a fabric that will be fixed on the adhesive composition, you need to accurately measure all the surfaces that are to be pasted over. You will also have to accurately measure the canvases of the fabric.

Gluing one large canvas covering the entire wall at once is quite difficult. To simplify the solution of the task, you can divide the fabric into several small canvases. Having chosen the adhesive composition, you need to prepare it, stir it, let the glue brew and proceed with its application to the wall surface. Preparatory work with fabric are visible in the photo.

If you have to paste over the entire wall completely, then stick a whole canvas. It is quite difficult to perform such work on your own, and the master will need the participation of assistants. Before you can start cutting the fabric, a small cut is placed in hot water to check the fabric for shrinkage and color fastness.

After 10-15 minutes, the flap is taken out of the water, dried, ironed and measured again. If all the parameters remain the same, then the fabric does not shrink and you can attach it to the adhesive composition. Furniture or casein glue is considered the most convenient for working with fabric. It dries and gains strength under the influence of high temperatures when the decorated surface is heated. With this glue, you can cover the entire surface of the wall at once, without fear of premature drying.

They begin to stick the fabric, like wallpaper, from above. One of the workers holds the canvas, and the second, pulling it, rolls it with a roller, achieving uniform pressing. For more reliable fixation, furniture brackets are used, which, if necessary, are removed later. Having pressed the fabric with a roller to the surface treated with the adhesive composition, it is best to iron it with a hot iron, but in some cases you can use a hair dryer (not necessarily a building one) to achieve complete drying of the glue and material as quickly as possible.

Smooth the entire surface of the wall several times. After 3 days, it is necessary to check the fit and the absence of air bubbles under the fabric. If such are found, they are pierced with a needle and the entire surface is again ironed with an iron. Under influence high temperature the fabric is firmly glued to the wall. Excess material under the ceiling and above the floor is carefully cut off and the edges are covered with moldings, baguettes and skirting boards.

No less popular is such a way of decorating space as drapery with fabrics, but similar Finishing work often carried out in country cottages. On the walls modern apartments a glued canvas or stretched fabric looks better.

The order of work is shown in the video, which can become detailed instructions to carry out the above tasks.
