Tyvek which side to a warm room. Installation of underlaying films Tyvek. Eaves made with Tyvek® diffusion membrane

Tyvek (Tyvek)- these are unique waterproofing membranes, which at the same time have unsurpassed vapor permeability (diffusion ability) and are used to solve problems of providing waterproofing and wind protection of thermal insulation and the structure as a whole. Diffusion films Tyvek Dupont is used in roofing, wall (both external and internal) structures, as well as floors in order to ensure the protection of buildings and their inhabitants from external climatic conditions and from the effects of condensation. Produced from PVP fibers using spunbond technology at a plant in Luxembourg at the highest technical standards which is regularly confirmed by ISO accreditation.

Tyvek (Tyvek) 6 main advantages

  • Absolute protection of thermal insulation from water. Tyvek completely blocks snow, downpour and condensation. At the same time, it perfectly passes water vapor, thereby extending the life of the attic.
  • Combination high strength and small mass. Therefore, the material is excellent for creating a windproof barrier and is used as under-roof waterproofing.
  • Environmental friendliness of products. Tyvek products comply hygiene standards Russian Federation and has a corresponding certificate.
  • Windproof. Installation tolerances and temperature deformations create gaps in wall structures made of prefabricated elements. In this situation, membranes are used as wind protection in the roofs and walls of buildings and improve their thermal insulation characteristics.
  • Convenience and ease of use. The dotted lines allow the material to be laid with an overlap of 10-20 cm. Then it is mounted to wooden structures using staples, glue or nails. During the construction of the attic, there is no need to create an additional ventilation gap.
  • Compatibility with other types of thermal insulation and regular quality control. When using Tyvek, there is no need for additional protection from decay wooden structures, and quality checks are made high operational properties material.

Tyvek VCL

Tyvek VCL is a vapor barrier membrane for insulated pitched roofs and frame houses. Distinctive characteristic Tyvek VCL - maintains vapor permeability and at the same time maintains the required level of vapor barrier. Controlled steam transmission (vapor permeability Sd - 2-4 meters) is provided by a high-tech functional layer, which is applied to a solid reinforcing base.
The use of Tyvek VCL in combination with a fibrous insulation and a Tyvek hydro- and windproof membrane makes it possible to achieve a temperature and humidity balance in a room close in characteristics to log house. A comfortable and healthy microclimate in the room is achieved due to the fact that steam in small quantities passes through the vapor barrier layer, but does not linger in the insulation, but easily exits through the hydro- and windproof membrane. As a result, the normal functioning of the building is ensured without ice freezing in the insulation in the winter period and the accumulation of moisture in building structures in the summer period is reduced during air conditioning.

Tyvek VCL Benefits

the “greenhouse” effect, which is present in attics built using traditional polyethylene vapor barrier, is excluded

maintaining a comfortable temperature and humidity balance inside the building

protects the building from destruction due to the fact that building construction has the possibility of drying inside the building

strong, durable and easy to install material

produced according to unique technology at the DuPont factory in Luxembourg

    environmentally friendly and healthy material.

Tyvek VCL assembly

The material is rolled out perpendicular or parallel to the rafters from the inside of the attic and fixed to them with brackets in increments of 300 - 500 mm. It is recommended to install the rail over the material to provide a gap between the inner lining and the vapor barrier. It is allowed to install Tyvek® VCL on either side, it is preferable to mount the smooth side, marked, inside the attic.

When installing the Tyvek VCL vapor barrier membrane, it is necessary to hermetically glue the overlapping areas of the sheets and the junctions with the elements of the building structure with double-sided adhesive tape on a butyl rubber or acrylic base. Similarly, the material is mounted in the walls of a frame house.

Insulated attic

Waterproofing and wind protection of walls

The famous company Dupont Tyvek produces sufficiently high-quality membranes and accessories for internal and external roof insulation. Speaking specifically about vapor barrier, this is the Airguard brand, which is being developed using special technologies. Popular in many countries, Tyvek Airguard is renowned for providing highly effective vapor protection while being 100% airtight. According to the manufacturer, thanks to this, it is possible to control heat transfer, microclimate and energy efficiency at home.

Also pleased with high-quality adhesive tapes from Tyvek, designed specifically for Airguard hydro and vapor barrier. And this is an important point, because a lot depends on how competently the overlaps and seams of the internal insulation of the roof were made!

Dupont began its activity in the USA in 1802. Enough long time, modestly speaking, it manufactures and improves building membranes under its brand name Tyvek. We are talking about two hundred centuries! Needless to say, how this brand is trusted all over the world?

All Tyvek vapor barrier membranes are manufactured at the Luxembourg plant, using a special technology that is recognized as environmentally friendly and safe for health. They are based on polyethylene high density, a non-woven structure specially developed by Dupont.

And part vapor barrier materials- These are innovative membranes with controlled vapor permeability, the main task of which is the free removal of air into a ventilated space in order to prevent the destruction of wood from accumulating condensate.

Let's dwell on this point in more detail, so as not to confuse the vapor barrier from the waterproofing of the same brand. Waterproofing membranes Tyvek allows excess fumes to escape and protects the structure from condensation, because it is extremely important that the insulation inside remains dry.

For example, the popular Tyvek Solid Silver membrane helps to reduce indoor heating during a hot period, but the vapor barrier already serves to prevent the “greenhouse effect” and maintain the desired camphor heat and moisture balance and, of course, at the same time protecting the insulation already from the living quarters:

However, all three main types Tyvek vapor barrier act differently:

Compare the types of vapor barrier from Tyvek also by the following key indicators:

What's good: DuPont guarantees its Airguard vapor barrier membranes for a ten-year warranty. Although at the same time their durability is according to the protocols of Mosstroy - 50 years! That is why among consumers, in terms of quality, price and performance features, Tyvek films and membranes are compared with the famous German Delta membranes.

Tyvek accessories for fixing the vapor barrier

We suggest that you first study additional accessories from Tyvek, which are included in the necessary vapor barrier kit and, in fact, in themselves are part of it. We are talking about branded adhesive tape, the choice of which will not only affect how comfortable it will be for you to work with one or another membrane, but also what result you will get in the end. Therefore, let's take a closer look at how these tapes differ from each other, and what is the advantage of each of them:

Acrylic Type- This is a single-sided adhesive tape, which is good for sealing vapor barriers adjacent to pipes and windows. It was developed specifically for Airguard Control vapor barriers, although it is suitable for other types. Its value lies in the fact that such adhesive tape does not create unnecessary stress during gluing and equally overlaps both canvases by 50%. Even with the exit of the pipe there will be no problems.

Metallized Tape was created for the Airguard Reflective membrane. This tape is designed for foil membranes to properly seal their overlaps. Adhesive tape is suitable for both waterproofing and vapor barrier, and even for separate adjoining vapor barrier to pipes, windows and doors.

The next type of tape is butyl Tyvek Butyl Type. It is excellent for joints of all types of Airguard membranes and fixes the vapor barrier well to rough surfaces such as metal, wood and brick. Tyvek recommends sealing the vapor barrier around electrical outlets with this tape. chimneys. This is already a double-sided butyl-based sealing tape, which creates a more improved moisture and air tightness of the joint. Suitable for bonding all Tyvek membranes.

Another good material for gluing the membrane with a pipe and a door and a window - this is adhesive tape Dupont flex-wrap, which perfectly closes the most difficult joints, especially around engineering pipes.

And finally, one-sided tape Tyvek UV Facade, which was created for local repair of vapor barrier and waterproofing. This tape is made on an acrylic adhesive base, so it adheres well to any surface.

AirGuard Reflective: heat reflective vapor barrier

The Dupont Reflective vapor barrier was developed by Tyvek to reduce heat loss during the cold season. This is a special four-layer membrane with high vapor barrier and additional features heat reflection. It is based on foil thinnest layer aluminum, which greatly enhances the effect of insulation. According to a study by Dupont, such a vapor barrier reflects about 95% of infrared and thermal radiation!

In addition, Dupont Reflective has a high mechanical strength, because in its composition - combined material based on polypropylene. And the vapor permeability of this membrane in g/m2 for 24 hours is only 0.000018.

Here is the place of AirGuard Reflective in the roof structure:

Installation of the Airguard Reflective vapor barrier is quite simple, here is a brief instruction:

  • Step 1. The material must be rolled out parallel or perpendicular to the rafters, from the inside of the attic or attic. This vapor barrier material can be laid on either side, although it is preferable to orient the inscription inside the room.
  • Step 2. It is necessary to fix the vapor barrier with an overlap of 3-5 cm.
  • Step 3. It is recommended to install a counter-lattice on top to make another gap between the vapor barrier and the cladding.
  • Step 4. All fastening and junction points and the intersection of the sheets must be glued with acrylic or butyl rubber-based tapes, preferably from the same Tyvek manufacturer. These are tapes such as Tyvek Doublesided Tape, Tyvek Acrylic Tape and Tyvek butyl Tape.

Here is an example of mounting this membrane on Butyl Tape:

And here Tyvek Acrylic Tape is already used:

AirGuard SD5 (VCL): Innovative Vapor Control Membrane

The new generation membrane from the manufacturer Tyvek is Airguard SD5. It is designed to maintain a balance of humidity and prevent such a “greenhouse effect” typical of attics, in which dampness and condensate play a role. It is not for nothing that this membrane was also called Control, or VCL (Vapor Control), because its peculiarity is to simultaneously maintain both the properties of vapor permeability and the desired level of vapor barrier. How is this possible, you ask?

The whole secret is that in such a membrane there is a controlled passage of steam. All this is possible thanks to a high-tech functional layer, which is applied to the reinforcing base. As a result, thanks to the Airguard SD5 membrane, under the roof of the house in the attic, the heat and moisture balance is maintained, which is close in characteristics to a wooden log house!

Let's compare this membrane with the Reflective we discussed above:

The conclusion from the given data and illustrations is very simple: neither of these two membranes is better or worse than the other, because each of them has its own specific task. For example, Airguard SD5 - perfect solution for those who are convinced that there should be no vapor barrier in a residential building at all, because it does not allow the walls to breathe!

It is not for nothing that Tyvek positions this particular product as a salvation from the “greenhouse effect”, which usually upsets residential attics, and the entire building structure of the house has the ability to dry out right inside the building. And then a small amount of steam that passes through the vapor barrier layer does not linger in the insulation and exits through the external waterproof membrane.

Thanks to this, the house functions correctly: without ice freezing in the insulation, the building structure does not rot from moisture, and the room is remarkably air-conditioned. Here is a good illustration of this moment:

Consider the subtleties of mounting such a membrane. In the case of SD5, there is nothing complicated: the material must be rolled out perpendicular or parallel to the rafters, and fixed with staples in 3-5 cm increments. Next, it is important to create a gap between the cladding and insulation using rails. You can install such a membrane on any side, but preferably smooth (with markings) inside the attic. On the finishing stage it is important to hermetically glue all the overlaps of the canvases with acrylic adhesive tape or butyl rubber (also manufactured by Tyvek).

Most difficult place insulation for SD5 - pipe exit, and here's how everything needs to be done:

  • Step 1. Cut into segments the required length of adhesive tape.
  • Step 2: Fold the tape together and remove some of the release paper.
  • Step 3 Attach this tape to the pipe and wrap it around, while firmly pressing the tape itself.
  • Step 4. Now remove all the rest of the separation paper tape.
  • Step 6. Manually stretch and press the tape to the surface.
  • Step 7. Carefully check for possible gaps.

For convenience, we have illustrated the whole process:

And now we will tell you how to work with such double sided tape Tyvek. It is suitable for bonding films with smooth surfaces and gluing them to even elements finishes. The main thing in the installation process is to carefully remove protective base from tape.

If the SD5 vapor barrier somewhere in the attic will move from wall to ceiling, then it is necessary to glue the places in the corners of the walls. Therefore, this option of corner transitions is 100% hermetic:

As you can see from the illustration, you first need to glue all the corners and the junction of the wall and the slope:

An interesting moment! Concerning vapor barrier membranes Tyvek, laying them on a certain side is not a recommendation, but a strict rule. And if you think that the point here is the rough side, which allegedly holds the condensate - it's not! The whole secret is just in the smooth side. And Tyvek is well aware that a vapor barrier does not change its properties if it is laid on the “wrong” side.

The fact is that, unlike other vapor barrier materials, Tyvek has its own branded tapes, and the same acrylic tape will not stick well with a rough side. So the manufacturer strongly advises to put the SD membrane always with the smooth (!) side facing you so that the sealing is then 100% and the tape adheres tightly:

During the installation of the Tyvek membrane, strive to ensure the tightness of all its joints:

This vapor barrier is the newest solution from Tyvek. It is based on DuPont Typar and can control vapor permeability, depending on the humidity and temperature in the room! The most “smart” membrane:

AirGuard Smart is ideal for creating a vapor barrier on fiber insulation, from which steam can then easily escape through roof vents:

The only, perhaps, significant drawback of AirGuard Smart is that this membrane is quite difficult to find on Russian market, because it is mainly shipped overseas.

Remember that Airguard vapor barrier membranes must be combined with waterproofing materials of the same brand, since initially the manufacturer planned all this as one whole solution!

The principle of installation of Tyvek film is similar to the process of laying other roofing materials. roll materials. Its main feature is that it is necessary to roll out the film directly on the roof structure and thermal insulation of the roof, with an overlap, without a ventilation gap. For these purposes, there are special dotted lines on the material that serve as guidelines for installation (15-20 centimeters). The Tyvek® membrane can be attached with adhesive or mechanically using staples, nails, etc.

Roof lining material

Installing Tyvek on a thermal insulation layer

Roll out and stretch the Tyvek® film between the rafters. Free hanging of the material from the structure is not allowed. Due to the fact that this film is tear-resistant, Stroymet recommends Tyvek® to its customers. According to the manufacturer's instructions, it is best to lay it directly on the thermal insulation layer. After that, the film must be attached with a transverse purlin. The next layer of material, using the markings, overlap 15 centimeters.

If the roof slope is 6° more than recommended, the overlap should be more than 20 centimeters. If the design of the roof does not provide for the use of thermal insulation along the entire height rafter leg, experts from Stroymet recommend attaching under Tyvek® in this way thermal insulation material so that the ventilation space is below the level of thermal insulation.

Repair and arrangement of the attic in cold attics

Tyvek® film is a water and vapour-tight membrane material manufactured by DuPont.

If the roof of your house is without a batten, you can update the attic with Tyvek film. Learn more about the possibilities of this material.

Tyvek® non-woven film has been successfully used as a short term roof covering in bad weather. weather conditions, in case of an increase in terms construction works etc.

  • Stretch the Tyvek®Soft or Tyvek®Solid film gently over the rafters or battens.
  • At the joints, fix it with nails, and seal the seam with a special adhesive tape.
  • The nailed area is the most problematic area, where moisture often accumulates. That is why it is necessary to lay a seal under the roof.
  • Tyvek insulation is recommended for bonding film to dormer window. During processing, it is recommended that the protruding parts of the roof are first tightly covered with a film, and then fixed with adhesive tape.

Drainage below the gutter

In the case when the water is discharged below the level of the gutter, it is possible to quickly and without any problems find and fix problems with the roof. In winter and spring, ice and melting snow will be discharged into a gutter located on the roof.

Drainage into the gutter

With this option, it is quite difficult to detect holes or other damage in the roof in a short time. This can lead to costly and lengthy repairs.

Laying Tyvek® on the thermal insulation layer

  • Having stretched the film, we strongly stretch it directly on the thermal insulation between the rafters. The material is very durable, so don't be afraid to tear it.
  • We fix the film with the help of a transverse purlin.
  • The next layer must be applied so that the overlap is about 15 centimeters. The overlap increases to 20 centimeters if the roof slope is 5-7 ° more than the recommended one.
  • If thermal insulation is not installed over the entire height of the rafter, it must be ensured that the ventilation space is always below the edge of the thermal insulation material.

Closed skate device

Construction of the ridge in the attic with thermal insulation

When installing the film directly on a layer of thermal insulation material, the ridge must be closed, and the ends of the film must be connected in such a way that the overlap is at least 20 centimeters.

Open skate device

Making a skate using a protective belt

If the thermal insulation material does not reach the top of the ridge or the tightening level of the rafters, there may be a leak. To avoid this, it is recommended to treat the skate with separate coating elements.

DuPont Corporation is known as a developer and supplier of innovative materials. The specialists of this company gave the world irreplaceable nylon and lycra, space Kevlar and Mylar, as well as a wide range of freons. The construction sector did not stand aside either - the brand introduced Tyvek Soft membranes to the market, the technical characteristics of which are significantly superior to existing analogues, and then expanded the line with the Airguard brand.

The appearance of the Tyvek canvas was facilitated by a happy accident: in 1955, one of the scientists at the DuPont Experimental Center discovered that weightless white fluff was coming out of a laboratory tube. The phenomenon was carefully studied, and on its basis a patent proposal was developed for the manufacture of threads from foundry polyethylene. Trademark entered the market in April 1967.

Tyvek is a nonwoven fabric made of high density polyethylene (HDPE). During the production process, continuous bundles of the finest fibers are formed, which are then connected under the influence of high temperatures and pressure. The canvas combines the characteristics of film, paper and fabric, which determines a wide range of applications. The material with soft structure is used in textile and construction industry, and with a rigid one - in the printing industry.

Tyvek fiber under the microscope

Benefits of Tyvek building waterproofing

  • Chemical resistance. Spandbond is immune to the vast majority of salts and acids. With prolonged exposure to oxidizing agents (for example, sodium persulfate or nitric acid), it will only lose a little in strength.
  • resistance to deformation. While maintaining constant humidity and temperature, the dimensions of the sheets change by less than 0.01%. The membranes withstand tension up to 300 N/50 mm.
  • High elasticity. Bending strength indicators exceed 20,000 cycles. The tests were carried out according to the method of the Association of enterprises of the pulp and paper industry.
  • Lack of pile and spools. Since Tyvek is made from continuous fibers, it does not roll or frizz.
  • Light weight. The material is twice as light as regular paper.
  • Moisture resistance. All DuPont membranes have waterproofing properties, and wet material retains these qualities.
  • Vapor permeability. The figures are significantly higher than similar data polymer films.
  • Pollution resistant. Tyvek is resistant to runoff contamination but absorbs lubricants and oils well.
  • Wide temperature range of application. Technical characteristics of Tyvek Soft remain unchanged at temperatures from -73 to +80. Spandbond starts to shrink at +132 degrees, and melts at +135.
  • Environmental friendliness. The material passed all the necessary tests for toxicity to animals and humans. The results proved its complete safety.
  • Versatility. Membranes Tyvek Soft can be laid on either side - this does not affect their properties.

The control grid provides the necessary ventilation gap

Tyvek waterproofing is represented by several types of membranes:

  • Tyvek Soft. Wind and waterproof. Brings water vapor out. Most often used on pitched roofs. Can be laid on a heater.
  • Tyvek Solid. Non-woven waterproofing for walls and roofs various types.
  • Tyvek Housewrap. Super diffusion membrane white color. Suitable for protecting facades from moisture and wind.
  • Airguard SD5. Ideal insulation for frame houses. Helps support optimal humidity and temperature.
  • Tyvek Solid Silver. Reflective insulation is made of dense polyethylene, the fibers of which are covered with the thinnest metal layer.
  • Tyvek Supro Tape. Vapor permeable membrane equipped with adhesive tape.

DuPont's product range includes all types of hydro and vapor barrier membranes

Application of DuPont membranes

For arrangement pitched roof(insulated attic) the following types of Tyvek waterproofing are recommended: Soft, Solid, Solid Silver, Supro.

Tyvek waterproofing is suitable for roofs and walls

Work is carried out in the following sequence:

  • The material is rolled out and attached to the rafters with the help of a counter-lattice.
  • The membranes are laid directly on the insulation without a gap.
  • The size of the horizontal overlap depends on the angle of the roof: more than 34 degrees - 100 mm, from 15 to 34 degrees - 150 mm, less than 15 degrees - 100 mm. The vertical overlap in all cases is 100 mm.
  • The overlap on skates must be at least 200 mm, on valleys - at least 300 mm.
  • When the roof slope is less than 12.5 degrees, it is necessary to provide additional outflow of water, otherwise the liquid will accumulate on the surface of the membrane.
  • All joints are glued with a special butyl rubber tape.
  • The width of the ventilation gap above the DuPont films must be at least 5 cm, for this, in without fail a counter-lattice is being set up.

Important! In the area of \u200b\u200bridges and cornices, it is necessary to provide ventilation for the through passage of air. If Tyvek waterproofing is led to a drain, it is best to install an anti-icing system.

The scheme of fastening the membrane to the ridge and chimney

Wind protection and waterproofing of walls

Technical characteristics of Tyvek Housewrap and Solid Silver allow these membranes to be used on both brickwork, and for frame walls.

Follow instructions:

  • During installation hinged facade First, brackets are installed and the insulation is laid.
  • The Dupont sheet is rolled close to the insulation and fixed with dowel-nails (at least 4 per m 2). Holes are cut at the points of contact with the facade fasteners.
  • Connections to windows and doorways it is better to glue it with tape, so you will avoid acoustic pops in strong winds.

Important! Dowel-nails are best placed at overlaps, while the distance from the edge should be at least 70 mm. The recommended overlap is 150 mm.

DuPont membranes are used for waterproofing roofs and walls

vapor barrier

Technical characteristics of Tyvek Soft are not suitable for the role of a vapor barrier. To arrange a vapor barrier, use Airguard film:

  • Roll out the material from the inside of the attic and fix it with brackets in increments of 300-500 mm.
  • To ensure the ventilation gap, install a counter-lattice (bar or metallic profile 50*50mm).
  • Tape all overlaps and seams carefully with butyl rubber tape.
  • The canvas can be installed on either side, but it is recommended that the inscription faces the inside of the room.

Important! In cold attics, a roof vapor barrier is not required. In such cases, the film is laid on the ceiling of the attic floor.

The vapor barrier is attached with the marked side inside the room

Steam-retaining Airguard films are completely breathable, which reduces heat loss and increases the energy efficiency of any type of building.

top scores provides a combination of two types of membranes: Airguard - inside the building, Tyvek - outside. This solution creates an airtight and vapor vent structure that supports optimal microclimate in the premises.
