Why street yucca does not bloom. We grow garden yucca in the country, planting and caring for which are simple. Why is it not blooming

A spectacular tropical plant, garden yucca, can decorate your garden plot. It is very exotic and will look spectacular in any garden.

Nowadays, yucca has received well-deserved recognition among amateur gardeners. We will try to address issues related to its correct fit and subsequent care.

Description and photo of garden yucca

Yucca garden is a perennial shrub. Its foliage is a kind of rosette, inside it the leaves grow in a spiral. They are usually green or bluish in color, capable of growing up to 25-100 cm.

In the very center is a peduncle with white flowers. On inflorescences during one season, about two hundred flowers bloom, resembling bells, reaching about seven centimeters in length and five centimeters in width. After flowering, a seed fruit appears.

Types of garden yucca

Two types of yucca are suitable for planting in open ground:

  • Yucca gray - enough tall plant, not demanding on the soil, able to endure both dry and frosty weather. However, it is extremely sensitive to abundant moisture and watering.
  • Yucca filamentata is a tree-like bush, its sword-shaped leaves reach a length of up to 70 cm and a width of 3 to 10 cm. It is very unpretentious, it can tolerate air temperatures down to -20C without damage.

Yucca garden: planting and care

Before planting on the site, the yucca must be hardened. To this end, it should be placed every day for several hours on the street. Hardening hours are extended daily, as a result of which, after fourteen days, the plant will be prepared for planting.

Yucca is photophilous, it is ideally suited for illuminated areas on hills.

Landing features

Young bushes need small holes, however, further growth should be considered. A three-year-old yucca needs a pit from 70 to 100 cm in girth. The root is deepened by about 40-50 cm.

It is best to prepare the soil for planting in the fall. For yucca, clay-stony, sandy, calcareous soils and black earth are suitable. They do not tolerate excess moisture, therefore, it is better to plant them as far away from groundwater as possible. The bottom of the hole can be sprinkled with gravel, sand or ash.

After that, the bush is carefully planted, sprinkling the roots with earth. It is better to work with gloves to avoid cuts to the hands. Water not too abundantly, regularly, using water at room temperature.

Spring is best suited for planting, the air temperature at the time of planting should not fall below + 10C at night.

Watering and subcortex

Yucca does not require special conditions and care. It should be watered regularly, but infrequently, after the topsoil has dried. Sometimes you can sprinkle water on the leaves, especially if they dry out.

It is best to carry out this procedure in the evening or early in the morning.

During growth, the plant needs to be fed twice with minerals. First - in May, at the beginning of the growing season, then - immediately after the end of flowering.

Diseases of yucca garden

Yucca rarely gets sick. Sometimes the plants show yellowing and wilting of the leaves. If this happens to the lower leaves of the plant, you should not worry - they tend to wither and fall off over time, this is a natural process.

Also, yellowing of the leaves occurs in cases where the plant has fallen into a draft or is frozen.

Transfer

With a long growth, the yucca grows and requires a transplant, but it must be remembered that frequent transplants are harmful to the plant. Experienced gardeners in such cases recommend:

  • Transplantation is carried out either in spring or at the end of summer. Remove the plant from the ground carefully, without damaging the roots. The emerging shoots are separated and planted separately.
  • A place new landing should not be fundamentally different from the previous one.
  • The site for planting yucca should be as light as possible.
  • The transplanted plant needs to be fed after fourteen days. Flowering should be expected after a year from the moment of transplantation.

Warming yucca garden

A logical question often arises - how to properly insulate a garden yucca for the winter and should it be done?

Filamentous and gray-gray yucca are frost-resistant, rather painlessly referring to a brief decrease in air temperature. In regions with cold winters, garden yucca needs to be insulated.

There are several ways to insulate:

Collect yucca leaves, then tie them with twine. To prevent freezing of the soil, place the lower leaves on the ground. The soil near the bush is covered with dried foliage, boards are laid on top to prevent wind blowing.

After that, the bush is closed with polyethylene, the lower part of the trunk is sprinkled with soil.

There is another method of warming - using a large wooden box, covered dense material, suitable roofing material or polystyrene. Then the insulating structure is covered with dried leaves, after which it is covered with spruce branches or straw, a film can be put on top.

Yucca garden will help create an unusual exotic corner on your site. This beautiful tropical plant is extremely unpretentious. With proper care, yucca will delight you for a very long time.

Photo of garden yucca

Indoor yucca is a beautiful and rather unpretentious plant in the home, it has firmly settled in city apartments. If you liked her, we will tell you about all the features of care and maintenance, and you can decide whether you need such a pet in the house.

Yucca belongs to the lily family and, despite its outward resemblance to the palm tree, has nothing to do with it. Her stem is tree-like, it is crowned with green or gray leaves, as if gathered in bunches. Depending on the species, its leaves can be smooth or covered with thorns along the edges.

The palm tree blooms with large cup-shaped flowers, as a rule, the flowers do not come out one at a time, but are collected in large inflorescences. However, it is not a fact that you will see this sight - yucca blooms at home very rarely. The fruits look like a dry box and are not of aesthetic interest, however, in some species they are edible.

Select the desired type

Although there are about 30 varieties of yucca, only two are usually grown in urban apartments - elephant and aloe.

  1. Yucca ivory got its name because of the trunk, which with a wide massive base resembles the leg of the animal of the same name. The plant is very unpretentious to external conditions, does not require special knowledge and is ideal for living even in the most cramped conditions.
  2. Less common is aloe yucca, caring for it requires theoretical training. An adult palm tree, growing, takes the form of a ball and has wide leathery leaves.

Yucca ivory Yucca aloe

Both of these types of room yucca will decorate your home. Which one to choose is up to you, but remember that regardless of your choice, both palm trees are unpretentious in care and will take the very minimum of your time.

Your home has a new tenant

The first thing that begins the life of a flower in your home is proper acclimatization, because new conditions are stressful for the plant. Experts recommend immediately after purchase to transplant it into a new pot of a larger diameter than the one in which it was sold, and completely change the soil. It is better if the new container is with high walls so that you can provide a sufficient level of drainage - at least 5 cm.

Particular attention should be paid to the soil. You can make up the soil for the plant yourself or buy it ready-made in the store, in this case, give preference to mixtures for palm and dracaena. If you prefer purchased, choose soil with a neutral acidic environment.

It is easy to prepare the soil yourself. You need to take one part of humus, two parts of sand and the same amount of sod and leafy soil. It is better to use sand of a coarse fraction in order to provide a better drainage effect.

Before immersing a yucca in a container intended for a plant, you need to lay out the bottom with gravel or expanded clay. The stem must be planted to a depth of no more than 3 centimeters, immersion to a greater depth threatens to rot the stem and kill the plant.

Features of the existence of palm trees at home: lighting, watering, ambient temperature

Since yucca comes from hot countries, important question that you ask yourself - how to care for house palm yucca.

Lighting, humidity

First you need to install it in the place of the apartment with sufficient illumination. It is especially important to have constant access to light for young plants. Along with this, you must protect the plant from direct sunlight.

With the onset of the warm season, it is advisable to put a palm tree on a balcony or on an open terrace. Be sure to ensure that it is not subjected to sudden changes in temperature and is not in a draft.

In winter, you can see how the plant bends, turning its whole body towards the light source. To avoid deformation of the stem, it is recommended to additionally highlight the yucca from about September. By the way, it is with the lack of light in the cramped conditions of city apartments that experts associate the fact that the plant blooms extremely rarely.

The best choice for placing a yucca is on a floor stand so that it is approximately flush with the windowsill. Be sure to make sure that it does not overheat due to the action of the radiator central heating. It is not recommended to install a pot with a plant on the floor due to insufficient lighting, and also close to a window glass due to the possibility of hypothermia.

For normal life, it is necessary to ensure the humidity of the microclimate of the apartment at a level of at least 40%. If your apartment has dry air, it is recommended to additionally moisten it around the plant with a spray bottle, spray the plant a couple of times a day, especially in winter.

In its habitual homeland, the palm tree exists in a subtropical and temperate climate. The temperature in summer should not exceed 26 degrees, in winter - 20 degrees. Most importantly, try to avoid sudden changes in temperature, for example, open windows at night to ventilate windows, because this can lead to the death of the plant in a short time.

If you want to start a palm tree and do not dare, know that the yucca palm tree requires minimal care at home, even a beginner in plant growing can handle it without any problems.

Watering

Irrigation features depend primarily on the time of year. The palm tree is quite resistant to arid climates, so the size of the pot and the palm itself, as well as its age, should influence the intensity of watering. For example, a small palm tree that you just brought home needs to be moistened every day, but little by little, and an adult plant in an outdoor tub needs to be watered once every two to three weeks.

In the summer from May to September, at an average daily temperature of 22 degrees, you need to water the yucca about once a week, the colder it gets, the less often it needs watering. If the room temperature has stopped at 18 degrees, you only need to moisten the soil a little more than once a month.

Pay attention to the condition of the topsoil in the pot. It must be dry before watering. With the help of a wooden stick stuck in a pot, you will be able to assess the moisture content of the earth and below, in the interval between waterings, it should dry out by half or even two-thirds of the total height.

It is important to know some features of watering and always pay attention to them.

  1. Do not allow water to stand in the pot tray, where it can drain during watering. Always empty the pan, otherwise, from excess moisture, the roots may begin to rot, and the plant will die.
  2. If the top layer of soil remains wet for several days after watering, it means that it has hardened and water does not penetrate into the pot. It is necessary to loosen the soil with the help of an improvised tool, for example, the wooden stick mentioned above.
  3. Pay attention to the condition of the soil during periods when the humidity level changes in the apartment. At this time, it dries much more slowly, while maintaining the usual watering regime, you risk ruining the roots of the plant.

top dressing

The palm does not need any special feeding. Fertilizers are applied from April to August, it is best to use a special liquid product for this, which is sold specifically for feeding palm trees and dracaena. In winter, the plant does not need to be fed.

Remember that immediately after purchase or after transplanting, the plant does not need to be fed, as you need to give it time to recover and not subject it to additional stress. If during transplantation you used a special balanced soil for palm trees, then for about a year the yucca does not need additional nutrition.

Yucca transplant

Yucca, like any other plant, requires a transplant in addition to care. It is recommended to carry out this procedure no more than once every two years, each time replacing the pot with a larger one, and making a partial replacement of the soil. There are no special restrictions on transplant time, but the spring months are considered the best.

When taking the plant out of the pot, try not to injure the roots, otherwise, after transplanting, the palm tree will be sick for a long time, and the adaptation process will be delayed for a long time, if at all it will survive it.

Before transplanting a yucca, at least 5 centimeters of drainage should be laid out at the bottom of the new pot. If it seems to you that the soil has not lost its nutritional properties, transplanting a palm tree should be done by transferring an earthen clod with roots to a new pot. The space between the lump and the walls of the pot is filled with new suitable soil. It is better if it is the same potting soil that you used in the previous transplant, in which case the stress time will be reduced.

pruning

The palm tree is pruned in order to rejuvenate the plant and give it a beautiful shape. If the yucca is strongly stretched upwards, circumcision is also carried out.

The procedure is best done in the spring, when the plant stops growing. Before cutting the yucca, the indoor tool must be disinfected with alcohol.
The cut should be brought to the end, and not break off the branches with leaves, so as not to hurt the growth points. Places of cuts must be treated with crushed coal to prevent the process of decay. After the operation, the plant is returned to its usual habitat and watering is provided according to the existing climate conditions. The cut parts of the plant are not thrown away, but used for reproduction.

Diseases

The main indicator that something is not right with the plant is the leaves. Any change in their color and shape should alert you. Yucca room sickness tolerates quite easily, it is only important to know their symptoms so as not to start the lesion.

  1. If you notice that yucca leaves are suddenly covered with large brown spots, this is evidence that a fungus has settled on them, caused by waterlogging of the soil or air. Diseased leaves must be removed to prevent the fungus from spreading. After that, you immediately need to change the plant's place of residence, moving it to a drier part of the apartment, and stop spraying the air around it.
  2. A more serious type of fungal infection is stem rot. This is again due to waterlogging and lack of fresh air. After taking the measures described in the previous paragraph, a partially diseased plant can still be saved by cleaning the festering sections of the stem. If the rotting process could not be stopped, the palm tree should be disposed of along with the pot so that the disease does not spread to other house plants.

As you already understood, yucca is not particularly capricious, extremely unpretentious and, with proper care, is practically not susceptible to diseases.

Pests

  1. A plant affected by a false shield cannot be confused with anything. It looks like it withered without watering, the leaves wither and fall off, and without treatment, the yucca may die. In stores specializing in home plants, you can easily find a remedy called Actellik, which will help get rid of this scourge.
  2. The symptoms of a tick infection are similar, as is the treatment, in addition, it is necessary to increase the level of air humidity, since the tick starts only in rooms with a dry climate.
  3. It is difficult to fight aphids, so insecticides are used. Together with them, you can wipe the leaves of the plant with a solution with the addition of ordinary laundry soap.

Yucca and family environment

The plant requires moderate moisture and a constant temperature, and this will benefit the rest of the inhabitants of the apartment. You will never forget to maintain a healthy microclimate in the apartment, and if it ceases to be healthy, the palm tree will tell you about it with its appearance so that you can take action in time.

Now you know how a home plant - yucca is just a godsend. Keeping it at home is a pleasure, in addition to all the advantages described in the article, such as unpretentiousness, minimal maintenance required, it also looks very beautiful and impressive and is part of the interior of the apartment.

Yuka is a heat-loving flower from the Agave family, which came to temperate latitudes from the tropical and subtropical climate of Central America. The tree or shrub plant is also known as the "denim tree", since it was this culture that became the raw material for the production of denim fiber. A beautiful and unpretentious culture in the wild is represented by 30 species, some of which are cultivated in Central Russia on the window sills of apartments and in garden open ground.

The yucca flower has its own characteristics that should be considered when growing:

  • Bright lighting - culture, being a native of desert areas with a scorching sun, needs good lighting.
  • Flowering - buds are laid only when the flower is in the cold for a long time.
  • Growth rates - the development of yucca is very slow, which forces impatient flower growers to acquire an already adult plant.

Yuca flower (Yucca): home care

The yuca home flower, reaching a height of up to 2 m, requires the implementation of only the most basic rules.

Lighting and location

To provide the necessary bright lighting, similar to natural, it is recommended to place the yucca near the southern windows. In the absence of such an opportunity, the brightest rooms are selected, where, if necessary, organized additional source Sveta.

Temperature

For the spring-summer period, the temperature values \u200b\u200bin the range of 20-25 ° C are suitable for the plant. In winter, the decrease in temperature should be limited to a limit of 10°C.

Substrate requirement

Yucca needs light, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5-7.5 and excellent water carrying capacity. The substrate can be purchased at the store or prepared independently, taking humus, compost, soddy soil and sand in equal parts.

Irrigation system and air humidity

Watering yucca should not be plentiful and frequent, which may darken the edges of the leaves and begin to develop root rot. With an optimal irrigation regime between procedures, the substrate should have time to dry to a depth of 5 to 7 cm. Yucca growing under the hot sun does not need spraying, with the exception of some moisture-loving species.

Advice! If the air in the apartment is too dry, it is better to install a humidifier or a container of water near the flower.

Top dressing and fertilizer

The plant responds well to foliar feeding, which is carried out twice a month from mid-spring to late summer. As fertilizers, preference is given to mineral complexes, the concentration of which, when used, should be half that indicated on the package.

How to care for the leaves, cleaning from dust

To facilitate the breathing of a flower and rid the leaf plates collected in sockets of accumulated dust, you can resort to spraying from a fine spray gun. However, this procedure should not be abused.

Yucca flower transplant

The culture is transplanted only when necessary - the pot has become small, the rhizome has become rotten, or the yucca was purchased 2 weeks ago.

During the procedure:

  1. A high stable pot is selected, on the bottom of which a drainage layer of expanded clay is placed.
  2. Using the transshipment method, the instance is moved to a new container.
  3. The remaining voids are filled with soil, which is compacted and moistened.

Attention! In case of illness earthen clod is broken, and the diseased parts of the rhizome are removed, after which the plant is planted in a new substrate.

Landing in open ground

Often, yucca adorns home gardens with its exotic appearance. country houses. And in this case, one of the main stages for successful cultivation is planting.

Soil preparation and site

For garden varieties, a well-lit place with deep groundwater is chosen. If the relief of the site allows, then it is better to select sites on hills with slight shading at the peak. solar activity. When digging the site, peat and sand are introduced to ensure a loose soil structure.

Landing technology

Planting yucca is carried out in the spring after the establishment of stable heat or in early autumn. Wherein:

  1. Planting pits are prepared, twice the diameter of the root system of seedlings.
  2. A layer of gravel is placed at the bottom.
  3. After planting the seedlings, the soil is lightly compacted and moistened.

garden care

Yucca in the open field requires a little attention. For an exotic flower, it is necessary to provide two main components - watering and top dressing.

Watering

The main rule when watering is to avoid excessive moisture. The drooping foliage will become a signal for the next portion of watering, which is carried out with settled water.

Fertilization

After planting a young plant in the garden for the first two years, the yucca is fertilized during the active growing season twice a month with complex mineral fertilizers. After the flower reaches the age of three, top dressing can be carried out with the inclusion of organic fertilizers.

Winter Care

In order for the yucca to successfully overwinter in the open field, its foliage is collected in a tight bundle and covered with organic material. It is also possible to cut the stem in half and then wrap it.

Plant propagation

Yucca breeds like seed way, and vegetative, which is more acceptable due to the too slow growth rate of the culture.

cuttings

With the advent of spring and until the end of summer, cuttings are carried out, in which:

  1. Sections of prepared cuttings are dried in the shade.
  2. After 12 hours of being in the air, the planting material is deepened by 4 cm into moistened sand.
  3. Rooting is noted after 3-4 weeks when plantings are kept indoors with bright light and a temperature of 25-30 ° C.

Barrel parts

From an adult, overgrown specimen, you can get several young plants.

If you use the method of reproduction, in which:

  1. The tops of an adult plant are cut off.
  2. The cut sites are treated with an antiseptic.
  3. After drying on fresh air the tops are immersed in boiled water.
  4. After the formation of roots, new plants are planted in separate pots.

Advice! If the trunk is of considerable size, then you can divide it into several parts, each of which should be planted in an individual container.

Pests, diseases and control methods

When the immune system is weakened due to a violation of the regulations for the care of yucca, scale insects are noted, spider mite, aphids and thrips. The shield is successfully processed by saturated soapy water which is left for an hour. After that, it is washed off. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated. In the fight against harmful insects, insecticidal preparations are the most effective. Among the most common diseases, rot and spotting stand out, which can be cured at the initial stages of development by spraying with fungicides.

Potential Growing Problems

Cultivation of a representative of exotic flora is often associated with certain difficulties:

  • Yellowing of leaf plates- if the yellowness touched only lower tier leaves, then this is a natural process associated with the maturation of yucca. When yellow spots elliptical shape, brown spotting is diagnosed, which must be treated in a timely manner.
  • Drying of the leaves- the lower leaf plates dry for natural reasons, while the reason for the drying of the upper ones is heat and lack of light. If the problem touched only the tips, then this is due to the dryness of the air.
  • leaf shedding- an excess of moisture in the soil can provoke a similar situation, which is easy to deal with when the irrigation regime is normalized.

Garden yuca flower in landscape design

The exotic representative fits perfectly into the gardens, made in mediterranean style. A drought-resistant culture is indispensable for the design of rockeries and composite flower beds, where the yucca is located in the center. The flower looks great on flights of stairs and rocky patios. An exotic representative in a flowerpot will decorate any architectural art objects.

Thus, the undemanding yucca flower, the care of which is not at all burdensome even for a busy person, is a beautiful plant that can decorate not only a living space, but also a personal plot, bringing notes of overseas design to the landscape.

Yucca grows well not only at home, but also in flower beds open ground. Most often garden false palm is grown in Ukraine, in the Caucasus and in the southern regions of our country, where the soil and climatic conditions are most suitable for the cultivation of heat-loving exotic. Few flower growers know which varieties and species, due to their botanical characteristics, are suitable for outdoor cultivation, which is why the choice of variety for decorating flower beds and planting in the open air must be approached very carefully and responsibly.

Characteristics of garden yucca

A significant part of yucca species in natural conditions grows in America and Mexico. Some species are also found in southern Europe. Beautiful and unpretentious, tree-like and evergreen outdoor false palm trees come in several types, but they all have some general characteristics. Perennial ornamental plant, depending on species features, on appearance may resemble a tree or shrub.

The average height of the tree-like stem part can vary from a few centimeters to several meters. The trunk can be either straight or branched. The foliage is lanceolate-linear or xiphoid, collected at the end of the stem in a fairly dense bunch. The plant blooms in summer. Large size flowers, white coloration, bell-shaped, collected in many-flowered and rather long, paniculate inflorescences. After flowering, the flower transforms into a round, dry or fleshy fruit, represented by a multi-seeded box with black seed material.

Species diversity

The Yucca genus includes about fifty species, but only a few of them are suitable for outdoor cultivation. The false palm tree is decorative, and at the flowering stage, the horticultural culture acquires a very exotic appearance. For cultivation in open ground beds in temperate climatic conditions suitable and gray, which perfectly tolerate lowering the temperature down to minus 18-20 ° C.

Perennial evergreen shrub filamentous yucca has linear-lanceolate, flat, basal, growing from a rosette, blue-green foliage. The length of the leaves varies between 30-90 cm with a width of 2-4 cm. The top of the leaves is sharply pointed, soft or hard. Threads hang down along the edges of the leaves. The inflorescence is represented by a panicle consisting of creamy white or yellowish white drooping flowers.

Yucca gray (Yucca glauca)

Yucca gray or "The Candle of the Lord" is a perennial evergreen monoecious, stemless or having a small woody stem part. The foliage is linear, bluish-green, 40-70 cm long, with a width of 0.8-1.2 cm, with rare and thin, curled threads at the edges. Peduncle racemose and tall. The inflorescence is branched, collected from bell-shaped, white, greenish-white or yellowish flowers.

Exotic appearance is a garden evergreen plant that can easily withstand short-term temperature drops to minus 28-30 ° C even without shelter protection. The root system is of a buried type, therefore it rarely freezes out, but in regions with long and severe winters, an ornamental culture needs a dry, airy shelter. Incorrect protective measures are the main cause of damping off or death of a tropical plant.

Yucca gray belongs to extremely vital plants, and is able to grow well even on sandy soils and without additional irrigation measures. This garden plant is quite aggressive in nature, so the removal of weeds when grown in flower beds is practically not required. The culture blooms at the age of four, and the flowers remain decorative for about a month. Yucca is best propagated by numerous lateral offspring, since seed material is almost never formed, and using store seeds for sowing allows you to get the first flowering only after a few years.

Others are grown as container or tub plants outdoors during the summer. Garden varieties and varieties are perfect for landscaping the most arid and rocky-sandy garden plots.

Features of the development of garden yucca (video)

Boarding rules and dates

Planting garden yucca is carried out in spring and summer when the temperature in the daytime reaches 20-22 ° C. Only in this case does the plant form a good root system, and the decorative culture goes into the winter as prepared as possible. For growing an outdoor ornamental plant, you need to choose an open and well-lit area, represented by well-drained soil with an acidity of pH 7.5.

Dimensions of pre-prepared landing pit should be approximately twice the volume of the root system of the false palm. Land for planting should be abundantly spilled with water and mulched with hay or sawdust, which will reduce the rate of evaporation of moisture. In order not to dig out heat-loving varieties for the winter period, such varieties of yucca are planted in special planting containers.

Features of care in the open field

Caring for garden yucca is not at all difficult. Standard outdoor false palm care consists of watering and fertilizing, weed removal, loosening, disease and pest prevention, and frost protection.

Optimal growing conditions

Despite the fact that the false palm belongs to the category of tropical plants, exposure to the aerial part of direct sunlight for a long time can drastically reduce the decorative qualities of foliage. It is optimal to grow in well-lit and sun-warmed areas with some shading at noon.

Site selection and soil preparation

The ornamental outdoor crop grows quite well in almost any type of soil, but in order to get the most attractive plant, it is recommended to plant on soils that are sufficiently loose and do not retain water with a sufficient content of coarse sand. The site must be well-drained. It can be used when planting chernozem, as well as calcareous, sandy or clay-stony soil. Among other things, experienced flower growers recommend pre-planting deep digging with the removal of all weeds and the introduction of full-fledged complex fertilizers.

Watering and feeding

To improve the decorative qualities of an outdoor plant, it is important to provide the yucca with the right irrigation and fertilizing. Under natural conditions, the false palm easily tolerates dry periods, and an excess of moisture can cause irreparable harm to the root system of the plant.

Irrigation measures are necessary when the topsoil is completely dry. You need to spray the foliage of garden yucca in the morning or in the evening, after sunset. In the spring, at the stage of active growth, false palm trees need to be fed with compost, liquid humus, mineral fertilizers for succulent plants. Top dressing can also be foliar.

Reproduction and transplant

Garden yucca is able to maintain decorativeness for twenty years, but the plant needs timely transplants:

  • if the false palm tree has grown, and numerous shoots have appeared, but they need to be separated and planted, and the horticultural crop needs to be transplanted;
  • the root system can be deepened by 60-70 cm, therefore, to reduce the risk of damage to the roots, it is necessary to dig deep enough;
  • garden yucca can be transplanted not only in spring, but also in the last decade of summer;
  • flowering of a false palm after transplantation occurs in about a year.

Garden yucca is propagated by seeds and vegetatively. On the territory of our country, propagation by bush division and stem cuttings is used.

Application in garden decor

When using garden yucca in landscape design it is very important to take into account the botanical features of the culture and follow the basic rules for combining a false palm tree with others ornamental plants. Outdoor false palm tree is great for rock garden decoration, border decoration garden paths, rocky-gravel or sandy landscape zones.

Long-blooming yucca with bluish-green foliage and white leaf edges is an exquisite decoration of monochrome areas. The plant is suitable for single and group plantings. IN flower arrangements Yucca is best complemented by undersized crops with bright or pastel blooms.

In the spring, in order to form a branching plant, it is recommended to cut off the apical part. Slices must be treated with garden pitch or crushed coal. R The result of such activities is the formation of stem shoots from awakening buds.

Why garden yucca does not bloom

Many experienced amateur flower growers know that yucca almost never blooms indoors. However, when creating a street decorative culture comfortable, as close as possible to natural, growing conditions, garden false palm blooms with very beautiful and fragrant bell-shaped inflorescences-panicles.

The absence of flowering may signal gross violations of cultivation technology or improper care behind the plant. Among other things, the period of entry into the flowering phase may depend on the characteristics of the variety. Some species bloom in the first year after planting., and flowering is possible in the fourth and even fifth year of life. It should be remembered that in good conditions, which does not freeze in winter and does not suffer from waterlogging, the plant blooms annually and is very plentiful.

Feeding yucca (video)

Growing garden yucca is a fascinating and absolutely not difficult task. To get a durable and highly decorative street culture, it is enough to carry out proper care and do not forget about the regular prevention of diseases and pests.

All the neighbors bloom - I do not. It's a shame!

Planted already in three different places. What could be my mistake?

The photo is not my yucca. Mine doesn't bloom.

And I have yucca, quite unexpectedly for me, bloomed last summer.

Why unexpected? Because the plant was bought in the market from an unverified seller and planted in early spring when it was still quite cold.

The acquired plant is correctly named yucca filamentous(Yucca filamentos). She has green xiphoid leaves with threads hanging from them.

Contrary to rather pessimistic expectations, by mid-July the yucca threw out an arrow, which I did not immediately notice. Then the arrow grew, became powerful, and then completely covered with numerous large white bell-shaped flowers. Indescribable beauty!

It is especially pleasing that by the autumn several children appeared around the plant, which I plan to separate from the maternal outlet in the spring, thus creating a small nursery from yucca.

Why is the yucca not blooming?

Analyze the growing conditions of the plant in your area.

Yucca- the plant is very thermophilic, loves well-lit sunny places, moderate watering, good drainage and periodic top dressing. If so, then you should check whether the central kidney is deepened.

Indoor yucca is called the tree of happiness. I assure you, blooming garden yucca charges us with such positive that, truly, you feel like a happy person!

Yucca garden - care

Yucca is a plant of the agave family, a shrub or a low tree. Yucca is called the "tree of happiness" and is believed to bring good luck to its owners. Due to the fact that the plant comes from tropical and subtropical latitudes, it is quite thermophilic. In addition, yucca is pollinated by only one species of butterfly, which does not live in the temperate climate zone. For these reasons, the plant bears fruit only at home. But on the other hand, yucca blooms with beautiful white flowers, similar to large bells. Yucca is often planted in pots, and it decorates not only the space garden plot, but also at home, offices, public institutions.

How to care for garden yucca?

Caring for garden yucca does not require much effort. Since the plant is very thermophilic, it is planted in a place well lit by the sun. Watering requires moderate. Be sure to focus on the plant itself when setting the watering regime: straightened leaves with twisted threads indicate that the yucca receives enough moisture, but if the leaves begin to curl and the threads sag lifelessly, then there is not enough water. When growing in a pot, pay attention to the fact that moisture does not accumulate in the pan, because stagnant water in the root system will lead to rotting of the yucca. Accordingly, when planting garden yucca in a pot, it is necessary to create a drainage layer, and when growing yucca in the garden, choose a place where moisture stagnation is impossible.

When breeding a plant at home, in spring and summer, it is desirable to take it out into the open air, so it is more convenient to grow yucca in a flower pot in a country house: in the cold season, it decorates the interior, and in the warm season it feels great in the garden. If the plant feels the lack sunlight, then it loses its thick fan-shaped leaves.

In order for the yucca to winter safely in the open field, its leaves are tied into a bundle and covered, you can also cut the stem in half and cover it.

Yucca garden - reproduction

The plant often propagates by seeds, which are sown at the end of winter. Flowers are grown indoors at medium room temperature. Seedlings grow for two years, and garden yucca is transplanted into open ground after this time in the spring, when the temperature does not drop below 7 degrees. Tiny bushes can form on the lateral shoots of the filamentous yucca, and they take root well when planted in the soil.

Yucca is also propagated by root cuttings. To do this, you need to dig a fairly deep hole (2 times wider and deeper than the roots of the flower) and create a large drainage layer. Sprinkle the root system half-mixed with sand and gravel and pour the plant with settled water.

Pests and diseases

Sometimes after wintering, garden yucca becomes covered with yellowish spots. Also, a plant in the garden can be occupied by slugs. Insecticides are used to kill them.

Often amateur gardeners ask the question why garden yucca does not bloom? The plant may bloom in the first year after planting, and may start flowering in the 4th or 5th year of life. In order for the plant to bloom, in no case is it allowed to cut wilted leaves! With a clear reluctance to bloom, the plant is given shock therapy: they keep it for some time at the end of winter in a room with a temperature of +5 degrees with minimal lighting.

We wish you success in growing a beautiful "tree of happiness"!

Yucca garden - unpretentious southerner

In summer, when the sun shines mercilessly and is tormented by suffocating, burning heat, my memories will certainly take me to distant sea shores. How good it is there, in the realm of the freshness of the sea breeze, ringing waves and a kaleidoscope of exotic plants.

Yucca has recently taken up residence in my southern memories. suburban area. As it turned out, garden yucca is very unpretentious to climatic conditions and feels great not only in hot countries, but also endures low temperatures.

It so happened that for a long time the southern yucca fell out of sight in ornamental gardening and was grown mainly in winter gardens. And recently, she again attracted attention and began to occupy a worthy place in the landscaping of parks, squares, flower beds and, of course, household plots.

The genus Yucca (lat. Yucca) is a member of the Agave family and includes more than 40 various kinds shrub perennials. Yucca is native to North America, Mexico and the Caribbean.

We mainly grow two types of this plant:

  • Yucca filamentous or garden (lat. Y. filamentosa);
  • Glorious yucca (lat. Y. gloriosa).
  • These types of yuccas won the hearts of our gardeners with the beauty of their inflorescences. Yucca garden blooms in May-June for 40-45 days. An inflorescence of a wide pyramidal form with a lot of bell flowers of pure white or cream color.

How to care for yucca in the garden?

Despite all the outward exoticism of this plant, yucca is not at all ambitious in everyday life. Any cultivated soil is suitable for her, although a mixture of leafy and soddy soil, sand and humus would be ideal. Also, the plant can be pampered by adding fertilizers enriched with phosphorus or bone meal to the soil. This will stimulate the yucca to bloom very well.

Watering should be moderate, focusing on the condition of the plant. When the spiky leaves are straightened and stretched upwards, you can not worry and continue to wait for the rain. If the bush is still green, but the leaves begin to curl up, you need to run after the watering can and save the plant.

The only claim that yucca can make regarding its content is the abundance of sunlight. If you plant this southerner in the shade, she simply refuses to bloom.

Yucca care is also quite simple. All that needs to be done is to cut off faded flower stalks and old frozen leaves in time. It is pointless to leave faded flowers with the hope of waiting for seeds in our region, since those insects that could pollinate it are not found here. I strongly recommend pruning with gardening gloves, as the plant is very prickly.

    Yucca in landscape design

Since yucca is a perennial evergreen, it is actively used in landscape design. Even when the yucca is not in bloom, it remains irresistible. Its long, slender leaves of deep green or slightly bluish color make an excellent background for bright, variegated, low-growing annuals or unpretentious sedums.

Yucca is also a frequent guest of alpine slides and rabatok. Yuccas are planted on lawns both in groups and as tapeworms - in splendid isolation. The main thing for a plant is a sufficient amount of "personal" space. A dense fan of the leaves of this bush can occupy more than a meter of territory.

The only remark I would like to highlight is complete contraindication planting yucca bushes near paths. The leaves are very sharp and strong, can leave scratches on the skin.

    Provide yucca wintering

Despite its sultry nature, yucca endures winter very easily, withstanding temperatures down to -20?. Watching my bushes, I got the impression that even under the snow they do not stop growing. At first, I carefully insulated the plants, built huts and other structures over them. But with such a winter, the middle of the outlet often rots out in yucca and the bush either recovered for a very long time and did not bloom, or completely disappeared.

Therefore, the best winter shelter for yucca is fallen leaves. Also, for the winter, protection should be provided not only to the roots, but also to the leaves. They should be carefully gathered into a bundle and tied with twine in three or four places. This will provide the plant with resistance to the wind and preserve the crown. You can strengthen the structure by tying the plant to pegs driven into the ground.

    Reproduction of garden yucca

In the spring, in the month of April, is held vegetative reproduction bush by the simplest method - division. At the same time, the bush is dug up, divided into daughter plants with shoots and roots, and seated. At the same time, reproduction of yucca and root offspring-children is carried out. But that's a completely different story.

There are many legends about yucca among the people, according to which these plants bring health and happiness to a person, as well as success in business. I wish you success in growing this beautiful plant. I don’t know for sure about everything else, but yucca will definitely bring beauty and southern sunny charm to your garden.

Yucca garden - the secrets of gardeners that you did not know about!

An unusually beautiful garden yucca is found in summer cottages and household plots quite often, but many gardeners do not dare to get a flower in the country, referring to the lack of growing experience. In fact, the care of the plant is not demanding, and it reproduces easily. Not without nuances, but good advice, described in the article below, will allow you to find out why the yucca does not bloom, how transplanting and pruning occurs, as well as the basics of planting and care ...

    Planting yucca in open ground

Yucca is an unpretentious plant, quite hardy, easily tolerates drought and heat. However, the defect of the flower is excessive moisture in the soil, which can lead to the development of rot on the roots and provoke the appearance of various diseases, in some cases the death of the entire plant.

For planting, yuccas choose sunny places, away from vigorous trees and shrubs, which can not only create shade, but also take food, preventing them from fully developing and blooming in in full. You should not plant garden yucca in a lowland, places where water accumulates. An incorrectly chosen place is also reflected in the external state - the leaves fade, become less dense, the trunk stretches too high, as a result of which the yucca looks untidy.

When is the best time to plant yucca, autumn or spring? The best time is spring, when the ground warms up and the threat of frost passes. Before planting outside, a flower can be grown at home in a pot or greenhouse, but then the plant must be hardened before planting in the ground so that it does not die. Within 7-10 days, the yucca is gradually taken out into the street, tamed to natural conditions and increasing the time spent outdoors.

Plant yucca in autumn, especially in central Russia, in Leningrad region, Moscow and Moscow region, also in the Urals and Siberia is not recommended due to climatic features. Unpredictable weather may not allow the plants to get stronger until winter, so it's best not to risk it and postpone transplanting until spring.

    Garden yucca care

To save the plant after planting in the ground, you need to monitor watering, do not flood the flower, irrigate as necessary during dry periods. After planting, the yucca should not be cut off withered leaves. Due to the fact that two- and three-year-old yucca seedlings can release a peduncle and begin to bloom. If you cut it immediately after transplanting, you will not see flowering. Usually, yucca begins to bloom from the third year of life, a refined long stem with beautiful snow-white flowers resembling bells.

It is advisable to loosen the soil under the flower, removing weeds and breaking the earthen crust for better oxygen access to the roots.

A young yucca transplant at the age of two or three years to a new place is possible if necessary. How to transplant yucca? Water the plant so that when digging the roots do not come off, but together with a clod of earth come out under the bayonet of a shovel. You can transplant yucca during the entire growing season, in spring, summer and even autumn (only in the southern regions and in the Kuban). Flower fertilizer after transplantation is not carried out for the first 30 days, so as not to burn the roots.

Feeding yucca is carried out once a year in early spring, as a rule, organic fertilizers and mineral complexes are used. It is advisable to loosen the soil under the flower, removing weeds and breaking the earthen crust for better oxygen access to the roots.

Yucca is relatively winter-hardy, therefore, without shelter, it sometimes winters even in the Moscow region. It is advisable to cover in the winter, using any covering material available (agrospan, spunbond, film, etc.), the root zone can be mulched with humus, peat, leaf litter (preferably oak, as it does not fade).

    Yucca breeding

In most cases, yucca is propagated by lateral offspring (layering), root division, and less often by seeds. mature plant with good care, it can produce a significant number of daughter outlets that can be found under a bush near the base of growth. You need to take seedlings that have already developed a root system so that rooting goes well and the plants take root in a new place.

The container with crops is covered plastic wrap, glass and clean in a warm place. After about 28-30 days, the first shoots will begin to appear. The film is removed, the pots of yucca are placed in the light, after a week they dive into separate pots. Transplantation of yucca grown from seeds into open ground is carried out after 12-16 months.

Yucca pruning for beauty and rejuvenation

Yucca pruning is carried out in order to rejuvenate the plant and obtain new growths. To awaken dormant lateral buds, in early spring, after the snow melts, the main stem is cut off, stimulating the development of lateral buds, from which new rosettes will develop in the future. If there is no need to grow new shoots, the plant overwintered well, only bad and dry leaves are removed.

Yucca is very decorative when growing in one stem. With proper care, the height of the peduncle exceeds 1.5 m, the number of beautiful large flowers can reach 250 pieces per plant. Before subjecting the crop to a haircut, consider whether it is necessary to resort to this procedure.

Usually, yucca is pruned after flowering, removing the faded stem and bad foliage. To give a decorative effect to the plant, the leaves are not cut off completely, retreating a distance of 3-5 cm from the trunk, so the trimmed yucca will not look naked, the trunk will be in scales. Even in winter, yucca in the snow decorates the garden, becoming a striking element in the landscape design of your site.

Yucca flower garden planting and care, flowering and description of the flower, features of growing and transplanting garden palm trees, types and varieties in the landscape photo

Garden palm or yucca today grows with many owners of garden plantations, and this phenomenon will not surprise anyone.

Many gardeners can rightfully be proud of the amazing beautiful plant, resembling a palm tree and growing on their plots. But some are afraid to grow such beauty, mistakenly believing that the plant is too demanding on growing conditions and care. In fact, reproduction and care for this plant do not require special efforts and costs.

Description and origin of the garden palm

The birthplace of the evergreen yucca is America. This plant belongs to the Asparagus family, in its appearance it resembles the Mediterranean agave, but unlike the latter, its leaves form a dense spiral rosette.

Domestic representatives of this family have a well-developed stem, while specimens growing in the open ground have almost none, the rosettes are located tightly pressed to the ground. The peduncle is represented by a large panicle, the flowers of which are lowered down like bells. It protrudes from the central part of the sockets, reaching a height of 1.5 to 3 meters. An exotic palm tree propagates by root offspring.

In America and Mexico, the industrial cultivation of agave, a relative of yuca, is practiced on huge plantations. The world-famous tequila is produced from its stem.

The exotic appearance of the plant, it would seem, suggests comfortable natural growing conditions, but the tropics and subtropics of America, the natural habitat of yucca, do not have such characteristics at all. The plant is adapted to prolonged drought and sudden changes in temperature. Such amazing endurance allowed the plant to settle from the southern regions to the middle strip of the continents.

What are the types and varieties

    • Yucca gray(Yucca Glauca) or the Candle of the Lord, as it is also called by the people. The length of the leaves reaches 90 cm, the trunk is short. The leaves are greyish green. The leaf plate is lighter around the perimeter. Small inflorescences are collected from greenish-white or yellowish flowers. The peduncle stretches up to three meters in length. Substrate Requirements this species does not have. It can easily grow even in sand, tolerates dry periods well and low temperature, but excessive soil moisture is detrimental to it.
    • Yucca filamentous Filamentosa(Yucca Filamentosa). A bush representative, the castings of which are slightly smaller and reach a length of up to 70 cm, and the width ranges from 3 to 10 cm. The edges of the leaf plates are bordered by slightly protruding threads, and the top of the plates is slightly bent. The length of the peduncle is 2.5 m, it is represented by beige-white drooping flowers. Representative yucca filamentous planting and care. Like other species, it is a very unpretentious frost-resistant plant that can withstand temperatures down to -20C.

Among the F. variegata filamentose hybrids, the following interesting varieties are distinguished:

  • Bright Edge - bright bluish-green foliage, girded with a yellowish-crimson ribbon;
  • Color Guard - wide leaf plates of yellow color, edged with a green stripe;
  • Gold Heart - yellow foliage, green edging, passing through the leaf plate with blurry borders;
  • Ivory Tower- green foliage, whitish border.
  • Garden palm care and planting in the garden

Despite its unpretentiousness and endurance, yucca feels especially comfortable in elevated places with good lighting. Representatives growing in dark places are characterized by thinned, loose rosettes and pale leaf blades.

When and how to plant a flower of happiness

Spring is the most favorable time for planting, but temperatures should not fall below + 10C. The dense structure of the leaves can lead to numerous cuts and injuries to the hands, so gloves must be used when transplanting the plant. The plant itself is transplanted in the spring, but preparatory work should be carried out in the fall: dig up the ground and form a hole for a spring plant transplant.

What kind of soil do you need

Yucca can grow on almost any soil, but you need to remember that air must be supplied to the roots in in large numbers, and the soil should not be excessively moist, preferably without groundwater nearby, to avoid decay.

But most of all, garden yucca prefers calcareous, sandy, clay-stony soils and black soil.

If the soil in which the plant grows is poor nutrients, it is saturated with humus.

Before transplanting, the hole is filled with coarse gravel or sand with the addition of two handfuls of ash. After planting, the soil should be pressed (compacted) and watered.

  • The size of the planting hole depends on the size of the plant itself.
  • Adult plants will need a recess up to 50 cm deep and up to 1 m in girth.
  • Young specimens will require less space, but it is necessary to take into account the area necessary for the growth of young growth.
  • For easier adaptation purchased plant to outdoor conditions, the plant is advised to harden for 11-14 days, regularly taking the plant outside, gradually increasing the time it stays outdoors. Only after such preparation can the bush be safely transplanted to the garden plot.

    Watering and feeding

In the processes of watering and fertilizing - the main thing is to know when to stop. Excessive watering threatens to rot the roots, and a lack of moisture will certainly affect the condition of the leaves. They will begin to curl into tubes. Proper watering will help straighten the leaf blades. Often watering the plant is not necessary and only when the topsoil is dry. It is useful to spray the leaves, which is carried out in the morning or evening hours, when there is no longer scorching sunlight.

When does yucca bloom? The bloom of this exotic plant occurs when it grows 3-4 years. To start this process, at the beginning of summer, the stem of the plant is surrounded by superphosphate, which, dissolving in water, penetrates to the roots of the plant, starting the process of formation of numerous buds.

Top dressing of the plant should be completed 30-40 days before the onset of autumn cold weather. During this period, the plants will have time to prepare for the winter season and severe frosts.

    When to transplant yucca garden

If the plant grows in conditions that are comfortable for it and with the same good care, then it can perfectly live in one place, without requiring a transplant, up to 20 years. Yes, and a plant transplant may be required only when the bush has grown excessively. This happens especially painlessly for the plant if the age of the specimen has not yet reached three years.

    Filamentous yucca transplant video:

But even an adult, overgrown plant needs a transplant. Often, plants do not tolerate transplants.

Experts give some advice when transplanting this plant, because you need to take into account some features of the planting.

  • The transplant period is spring or late summer.
  • When transplanting, remember that the roots of the plant can be located at a depth of up to 80 cm, so you need to dig carefully without damaging the root system.
  • All shoots must be separated from an adult specimen and planted separately.
  • The place, which is intended for transplantation, according to the conditions, should resemble the previous one, have good illumination, without drafts.
  • The first top dressing after transplantation is best done no earlier than two weeks.
  • Yucca breeding: how to do it right

For breeding, there are the following methods.

  • Root division
  • cuttings
  • Breeding from seed
  • stem
  • Yucca reproduction at home in a simple way - plant division. In the process of transplanting, the sockets are easy to separate, while not forgetting to dry and sprinkle the cut points with cinnamon powder or charcoal. Otherwise, infection or pests can penetrate them.

If the transplant is carried out in the spring, then the root of the plant can be divided into cuttings, the length of which does not exceed 10 cm. Such cuttings are placed in a greenhouse, after cutting off the top of the stem and treating it with coal. Sprouts with this method appear from dormant buds.

Outdoor garden yucca sets seeds, which are harvested at the end of summer. They are sown in a mixture of earth, which is represented by soddy, leafy soil and coarse sand in equal proportions. Plants grown in this way begin to bloom only three years after planting.

Yucca can also be propagated by stem. At the same time, the cut section of the stem is dried and planted in horizontal position in river sand. The substrate near the stem must be constantly kept moist. When sprouts appear, the stem is cut into fragments, each of which must contain a sprout and planted in the substrate.

You choose the most acceptable way for yourself how to plant a yucca.

How to cut yucca at home

Trimming the plant rejuvenates it and helps to get strong young seedlings. This method is also used for frostbite of flowers and their decay. In the spring, when the plant is no longer under winter shelter, the stem is pruned. At the same time, further growth of the plant stops, and dormant buds begin to wake up, which will give rise to new rosettes with leaves.

    1. Sometimes it can bloom after transplantation only in the 4-5th year.
    2. The reason for this can be severe winter frosts, which can damage the aerial part of the plant.
    3. Lack of lighting can also slow down the flowering process.
    4. If the growing conditions and care of the plant were good, this will certainly affect its appearance, flowering will be plentiful and last up to 2-3 weeks, which necessarily fall on the first two summer months. Blooming yucca is an unforgettable sight.

How to cover for the winter

Is there a need to dig up yucca before frost?

It is enough to warm the plant before the cold season comes. Plants endure spring and autumn short-term cold quite easily. It is important that the fallen snow melts quickly. Frost-resistant specimens perceive such temporary inconveniences especially easily. But real long frosts during a snowless winter are certain death for garden yucca.

The foliage of the yuca is wrapped with twine to gather together and the plant is covered with a box, on top of which the spruce branches or fallen leaves are laid. This composition is fixed by a covering material wrapped with adhesive tape. In such a shelter, the yucca will easily overwinter, without fear of any frost, especially when it lies on top large layer fluffy snow.

In the spring when temperature regime becomes stable, it is time to release the plant from winter shelter. Do not delay this for a long time, otherwise it may threaten the appearance of mold.

Yucca flower, how to care if you have problems

Yucca, like all plants, can be attacked by pests or diseases.

The most common are slugs, whiteflies, scale insects, and aphids.

The latter easily falls on the flowers, which quickly dry out and fall off. Wood ash in combination with a soapy solution will help in the fight not only with aphids, but also with other insects.

You need to take 0.250 wood ash, pour water (10 l) and bring to a boil, adding 0.50 g of ordinary laundry soap (grated). When the resulting solution has completely cooled down, immediately treat the affected leaves.

      Possible problems
