Jasmine planting and care in the open field in the fall. Everything you need to know about spring jasmine planting

We tell the rules for planting and caring for mock orange in open field. We describe in detail when and how best to plant garden jasmine.

We are considering caring for a plant in the garden: watering, fertilizing, pruning, flowering, preparing for winter, as well as diseases and pests.

Mock orange belongs to the Hortensia family, and jasmine belongs to the Olive family. At the same time, the shrubs are quite similar to each other, especially sweet and strong aroma, which causes confusion.

In Russia and the CIS countries, mock orange is often called garden jasmine, but real jasmine is a heat-loving plant (subtropical zone) and freezes out in a harsh climate. We successfully grow some of its species at home or in greenhouses (Indian, sambac, etc.).

Our outdoor planting guidelines and tips for outdoor care are for mock orange, or popularly known as "garden jasmine".

  • These names are used in the article as synonyms, since under these names one and the same plant is hidden.

AT Russian gardens most often grown are coronal (ordinary) mock orange, virginal, hybrid winter-hardy varieties of mock orange Lemoine and the selection of Vekhov Nikolai Kuzmich.

Chubushnik: planting in open ground

For excellent plant development and flowering important role plays the landing site, soil and soil mixture, planting distance and its depth.

This is a kind of foundation that provides comfortable conditions for growing mock orange in open ground for the next 25-35 years.

Landing place

The plant is best suited for a quiet place that should be well lit, especially in the first half of the day, but light partial shade is also allowed at noon. It is best to plant mock orange on the south, southeast and southwest sides.

Garden jasmine is able to grow in the shade, but in this case flowering will be much weaker, it will stretch out and take on a less beautiful appearance.

Do not plant shrubs in places where rain or melt water, as well as where groundwater occurs closer than 150 cm from the surface of the earth.

Soil and acidity

Mock orange loves fertile land with high air and moisture permeability. He is well suited rich in humus, light to medium clay soils. At the same time, garden jasmine is able to grow in poor soil, but then the development and flowering of the bush will be weaker.

Heavy clay soils are not suitable, in this case more powerful drainage and a “lighter” soil mixture are needed. On sandy soils, on the contrary, you can do without drainage, and it is better to replace part of the sand with garden soil.

The optimal level of soil acidity for mock orange is pH 6.5-7.5 (close to neutral).

soil mixture

Substrate options for garden jasmine.

  1. Leaf land, humus, turf (garden) land, peat in equal parts - a universal option.
  2. Turf (garden) soil, humus (compost) and sand - 3:2:1. Good for clay soils and black soil.
  3. Humus, black soil - 1: 1. Preferred option for sandy soils.
  • It is advisable to add one glass of wood ash or two tablespoons of superphosphate to any soil substrate.

landing distance

Large shrubs and trees - 2.5-3 m. When group planting mock orange, the distance depends on its type, about 80-140 cm. If you want to make a hedge of garden jasmine then - 60-80 cm, the place should be well lit.

planting depth

When planting, the root neck of the seedling should be located approximately at ground level. The maximum depth is 2-3 cm, otherwise the risk of rot development is high.

How to plant garden jasmine? Instruction

  1. Dig a planting hole: depth and width - 50-60 cm. At the bottom of the hole, make a 10-15 cm drainage layer of crushed stone, gravel or sand.
  2. Pour in some soil mixture. Position the seedling in the center of the hole so that the base of the bush is approximately at ground level.
  3. Gradually fill the planting hole with soil mixture and compact it so that there are no voids.
  4. Trim all shoots to about 30% of their length (a couple of buds to a strong bud). Water the seedling trunk circle 10-15 liters of water. Sprinkle a 3-4 cm layer of peat, bark or sawdust on top to keep the root ball moist longer.

Rules and Tips

  • Plant mock orange in cloudy weather or in the evening so that it takes root better.
  • It is advisable to dig a planting hole and fill it with a soil mixture 3-4 weeks before planting.
  • If the seedling has damaged roots, then remove them and treat the cut with charcoal powder.

When is the best time to plant marijuana in spring or autumn?

Garden jasmine is best planted in spring (April) or autumn (September-October).

A seedling with an open root system can only be planted in the spring before the leaves bloom, otherwise it will die, and in the fall from September 10 to October 15. Seedlings in containers can be planted throughout the growing season.

These dates for planting mock orange are also suitable for gardeners in the Moscow region, Leningrad region, Ural and Siberia.

Mock orange transplant

The garden jasmine shrub is relatively easy to transplant at any age. The optimal time for transplanting adult bushes is from late August to mid-October, but it is also possible in spring in April.

  1. The day before digging, water the mock orange abundantly so that it is easier to move it with a clod of earth, and it stocks up on nutrients.
  2. Cut off young shoots current year(autumn) or last year's by 30-40% (spring).
  3. Carefully dig a bush, plant it in a new place with a clod of earth and pour 10-15 liters of water over it.

Mock orange: outdoor care in spring, summer and autumn

The shrub is quite unpretentious in care, drought-resistant and hardy to adverse external factors.

However, to obtain the maximum decorative effect of garden jasmine, it is necessary to properly care for it.

Watering

Moisture for mock orange has great importance. With its lack, the bush may not bloom. Water the garden jasmine regularly, especially in hot and dry weather, so that the leaves of the shrub do not droop (loss of turgor).

The maximum need for moisture is from April to July, when the bush is actively growing, preparing for flowering and blooming. At this time, water approximately every 7-12 days with 15-30 liters of water.

In the spring, before flowering, it is advisable to spray the shrub with warm and soft water. For young plants, it is useful to add growth stimulants to the water ("Zircon", "Epin Extra" and others).

After the first watering in the spring, mulch the near-stem circle with a 3-4 cm layer of peat to retain moisture in the soil.

Soil loosening

During spring - summer, it is necessary to loosen the ground 4-6 cm deep 2-4 times. Also, remove weeds in a timely manner - they take away macro- and microelements from mock orange.

Top dressing and fertilizers

The first two years after planting, the mock orange does not need to be fed. mineral fertilizers. Additional nutrients garden jasmine needs for abundant and lush flowering.

  1. In early April (before the leaves bloom), dissolve 15 g of urea (urea), 15 g of potassium sulfate and 30 g of superphosphate in 10 liters of water and water the bush. Or water the plant with mullein infusion - 1:10.
  2. After 3-4 weeks (beginning - mid-May), repeat top dressing.
  3. Immediately after flowering, sprinkle 20-25 g of superphosphate (1 tablespoon) and 10-15 g of potassium sulfate per 1 m2 on the surface of the earth.

2nd option

  1. Before flowering (end of April - beginning of May), sprinkle two tablespoons of nitrophoska and a glass of wood ash on the surface.
  2. During flowering and immediately after it, pour with a solution: for 10 liters of water, 20-25 grams of superphosphate (1 tablespoon) and 10-15 grams of potassium.

Adviсe

Instead of mineral fertilizers during and after flowering, you can use wood ash. To do this, fill a glass of ash with 10 liters of water and insist for two days, and then pour the shrub into the trunk circle.

Bloom

The maximum attractiveness of garden jasmine is revealed when the fragrant flowers. It is for its pleasant, sweetish and powerful aroma that most flower growers love it.

The smell of mock orange has a beneficial effect on the human psyche and uplifts the mood. The plant usually blooms in the 3rd year after planting.

Flowering time

The flowering period of garden jasmine depends on its type and variety. In the conditions of the Moscow region, the coronal mock orange and garden forms based on it bloom first: golden (aureus), dwarf and variegated. They bloom almost immediately after (early June).

In the first two weeks of June, the small-leaved, thin-leaved, Schrenk mock orange blooms. In early - mid-July, the odorless, grayish, broad-leaved and fluffy mock-orange begins to bloom (blooms later than all).

The duration of flowering averages 20-25 days, in shady place A little bit longer. Schrenk's mock orange blooms the longest, and, for example, Gordon's mock orange is able to bloom in the fall for the second time.

Why is the mock orange not blooming? What to do?

Jasmine garden may not bloom in some situations. The most common causes are: lack of light (grows in the shade), lack of moisture, or nutrients(watering, top dressing), unsuccessful wintering (freezing of annual shoots), excessive pruning in spring or excessively deep planting.

Perhaps the mock orange does not bloom due to age, especially if you grew it from seeds (7-8th year) or from cuttings (4-5th year).

Proper pruning of mock orange: in spring, after flowering, in autumn

Garden jasmine needs annual pruning to form a decorative crown shape, especially vigorous species and varieties. Otherwise, it will thicken with young shoots and grow ugly.

Sanitary pruning in spring

Before the awakening of the kidneys (end of March - beginning of April), remove weak and damaged shoots growing inside the bush. If desired, you can shorten a few of the strongest branches, but proceed carefully, as excessive pruning can lead to a lack of flowering this year.

Sanitary pruning can be done at any time of the year. You will make a full-fledged formation of the crown of the bush after the mock orange has faded.

Anti-aging pruning

Approximately once every 2-4 years it is necessary to rejuvenate the plant. With an early vein in garden jasmine, cut off all shoots older than 10-12 years old at the very base of the bush (“on the stump”).

Due to such pruning, the crown of garden jasmine will be rejuvenated and powerful flowering and growth will be stimulated. New strong shoots will bloom next summer.

"Updating" the old bush

A very old or neglected bush is easier to rejuvenate with cardinal pruning.

  1. At the end of April, cut down all the trunks at ground level, and cut 3-4 of the healthiest ones at a height of 35-40 cm. Treat the cut places with garden pitch, and spread a 4-5 cm layer of humus around the bush and dig the soil a little (6-8 cm) .
  2. In summer, water the mock orange regularly and abundantly. It is also desirable to feed mullein infusion 1-2 times.
  3. In the fall, new shoots will appear from dormant buds, but in the spring, 3-4 of the strongest ones will need to be left, and the rest should be completely removed. These most developed shoots are the basis of a young shrub.

Formative pruning of mock orange after flowering

Formative pruning of garden jasmine is best done immediately after flowering (mid-June), so as not to disturb flowering, as it blooms on last year's shoots.

  1. First, remove all faded inflorescences. If spring was not pruned or there is a need, then completely remove all weak and damaged branches.
  2. Then prune current year's shoots to last year's growth ( green area branches to the lignified part).
By October, these branches will have time to develop a new growth with lateral shoots, which will appear flowers next spring.
If you want to reduce the height of the bush, then cut off all or the longest shoots below the growth zone.
  3. Also prune inward-growing and bare, weakly flowering, 4-5 year old shoots to thin out. And if the bush is very thick, then cut off 20-25% of the old trunks at the base.

Pruning mock orange in autumn

You should not prune young shoots of garden jasmine in autumn if you want it to bloom next year. In autumn, if necessary, you can carry out sanitary pruning and thinning of the bush (growing inwards and weak shoots).

Preparing for the winter mock orange

Most varieties of the plant are distinguished by good winter hardiness, especially of domestic selection. Adult mock orange bushes do not need winter shelter, and it is advisable to mulch specimens up to 2 years old with a 4-5 cm layer of peat or pine needles.

If the tops of annual shoots freeze in an adult garden jasmine in winter, it will still bloom, and with the help of pruning in the spring it is easy to restore the crown of the bush.

In the conditions of the Moscow region, the Leningrad region, Siberia and the Urals, it is better to plant winter-hardy varieties.

Pests and diseases

Mock orange is rarely affected by pests or diseases, but it is important to regularly inspect the shrub for their presence.

ADDITIONS TO THE ARTICLE:

We wish you a successful landing, easy care for a mock orange in the garden, and enjoy its wonderful flowering!

When one thinks of jasmine, the first thing that comes to mind is the enchanting aroma of this plant. A bright and “tasty” smell is a hallmark of a garden shrub with large tassels of white or cream-colored flowers. But did you know that in fact this garden dweller is called mock orange? From real jasmine, the plant only smells. Natural jasmine is a beautifully flowering liana, which is easy to grow at home, if you strictly follow all the rules of wintering. Mock orange is often mistaken for jasmine because of its fragrant flowers, which some plant species can boast of, and confusion happens so often that the false name is firmly entrenched in everyday life. So, get acquainted - mock orange, or garden jasmine.

Many years ago, chibouks and mouthpieces for smoking pipes were prepared from the shoots of the bush - since then the name chubushnik has remained. Today, the results of breeding work have become more than 60 species of garden jasmine. Non-double varieties are very fragrant. They smell no worse than real jasmine and take third place in terms of aroma strength after roses and lilacs. Double jasmine flowers have a subtle scent that has nothing to do with natural jasmine. Among the most beautiful and popular varieties of terry jasmine, we note:

Virginal. The bush grows to a height of up to 3 m. Large white flowers have a sharp sweet smell. The plant blooms twice, in summer and autumn. Repeated flowering is not as plentiful as the first.

Glacier. A flowering bush is decorated with large (up to 1.5 m in length) inflorescences of airy fragrant flowers. Thanks to these clusters of numerous petals, the look of the plant is stunning. Faded inflorescences do not look very aesthetically pleasing, so they are plucked from the bush by hand.

Anshantman. The flowers of this late-flowering shrub are recognized as the most impressive among the rest. European varieties terry jasmine.

Pyramid. The shrub grows to a height of up to 3 m, blooms late, releasing white, like snow, flowers with a subtle, barely perceptible smell.

Girandol. A bush with drooping branches grows up to 1.5 m in diameter. During flowering, it is covered with double flowers with delicate creamy petals. Their aroma is pleasant, but unobtrusive.

Schnistrum. The drooping stems of the bush are decorated with double flowers white color, which attract people around with a surprisingly fresh fruity aroma. The shrub quickly grows in height, reaching a height of 3 m.

Ermine mantle. A long-blooming low shrub with double flowers of an unusual creamy white hue. During the flowering period, the plant is enveloped in a vaguely perceptible strawberry aroma.

Arctic. The variety was bred in Russia. It is a squat shrub that blooms with neat flowers. small size with a slight odour.

Ballet of moths. The brainchild of Russian breeders got its name due to double flowers that look like moth wings.

Blizzard. The white flowers of this profusely flowering creation of Russian breeders surprisingly resemble snowflakes that hide almost all the leaves of a low shrub under them.

Youth. This variety was liked by many Russian gardeners. It seduces with its large double flowers, which have a pronounced aroma of wild strawberries.

Practice has shown that varieties of terry jasmine, bred in Russia, take root better in our climate. European representatives of culture are too weak for the harsh Russian winters.

Jasmine terry: how to grow a beautiful shrub

So that a neat and plentiful appearance appears in the garden flowering bush, you need to take into account some agrotechnical features and follow them exactly.

Unpretentiousness is the main advantage of terry jasmine. The plant tolerates moderate shading, but will grow much faster in a sunny area. by the most favorable time in order for the seedling to adapt to the microclimate of the garden and take root without problems, autumn and early spring are considered.

For planting terry jasmine, land of any composition is suitable, but the shrub can feel most comfortable only on fertile soil. Still water will certainly harm the plant, so the place for planting jasmine must be chosen in advance: it can be a high place or an area with good drainage system. Crushed stone and sand are suitable for laying the drainage layer, broken brick or gravel. Use so much material that the thickness of the layer is at least 15 cm. By the way, the proximity of groundwater will not affect the state of terry jasmine in any way.

Make the depth of the planting hole for jasmine about 50 - 55 cm. Fill it with a mixture fertile land and nitrophoska (approximately 25 - 30 g). When arranging a seedling in a pit, make sure that the soil covers its roots by 3 cm, no more. The earth around the young jasmine bush is well compacted and thoroughly watered.

The shrub prefers abundant watering, but it is impossible to be too zealous, otherwise the jasmine root system will be irretrievably ruined. Water the shrub with settled and well-heated water no more than 2 times a week. If used for watering too long cold water, the immunity of the plant will weaken, so it will not be able to resist infectious diseases. During the growing season, for one adult bush, you should take about 20 - 30 liters of water for one watering.

The first fertilizers are applied to the land where the mock orange grows a year after it is planted. The feeding program includes mineral and organic compounds.

To prepare a mineral mixture in 10 liters of water, dilute 30 g of superphosphate, 15 g of urea and 15 g of potassium sulfide. The resulting solution is enough to fertilize 1 - 2 jasmine bushes. After flowering is completed, the bushes are fed, enriching the soil with a mixture of 15 g of potassium and 20 g of superphosphate.

Use slurry as an organic fertilizer. The natural substance must be diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 10, otherwise the plant may get a severe burn. Top dressing with this fertilizer is carried out no more than 1 time per year. Instead of slurry, you can use birch or apple ash - plant it in the soil under the jasmine bush at the rate of 100 g of the product per 1 bush.

In addition to regular watering and fertilizing, caring for terry jasmine involves correct formation bush crowns and rejuvenating pruning. The branches of high-growing varieties of jasmine have different growth rates, so a neglected bush almost always has an asymmetrical shape. To put it in order, you need to regularly form a crown with your own hands. Here are some suggestions for this:

  1. It is best to ennoble the terry jasmine shrub during the growing season. In the spring, with the advent of the first heat, cut off slightly long branches, and shorten the weak to the middle. This will make the bush "wake up" and increase the growth of new shoots.
  2. Anti-aging pruning is needed for mature bushes that have many bare branches that spoil general form plants. When spring comes, 4 - 5 main trunks need to be shortened to about 0.5 m, cut off the rest (secondary) shoots to the base. So that the plant weakened in the places of pruning does not attack the fungus with all the ensuing consequences in the form of decay, the bare places must be protected by treating disinfectant. You can do this with a garden var. Mulch the top layer of earth around the jasmine with compost and shed the soil with mullein infusion.
  3. When young shoots sprout through sleeping buds, remove almost all of them without regret. Leave 2 - 3 strong branches on each stump - this is the basis of the future shrub. After 1 year, the plant will turn into a beautiful bush, and after 3 years it will delight you abundant flowering.
  4. Do not forget about the annual sanitary and cosmetic pruning: the bush is thinned out, cleaned of excess and weak shoots, wilted flowers are robbed.

How to prepare garden jasmine terry for winter

Adult strong jasmine bushes do not need any special preparation for winter - healthy plant tolerates well minus temperature. The tops of young twigs may suffer from frost, but spring formative pruning will help the plant recover quickly. It is much more difficult for young bushes that are not even a year old to winter. In order to help the seedlings that are not strong enough to meet the spring healthy, in late autumn they are hidden under a light, durable canvas and tightened with a rope.

Shortly before the first frost, the ground around the jasmine bushes is carefully dug up, the soil under the plants is mulched and sprinkled on top with a layer of garden compost, manure or pine needles. Such a trick will save the roots of terry jasmine from freezing.

Jasmine terry: subtleties of reproduction

Gardeners know several options for obtaining a new specimen of their favorite jasmine variety. Garden shrubs can be propagated using layering, lignified and green cuttings, seeds.

Reproduction of jasmine terry seeds

This option is considered the most laborious of all. Grown seed way the bush will delight you with its fragrant flowers only 7 to 8 years after rooting.

Shrub seeds must be placed in pre-dug holes before the onset of severe cold weather. It is best to do this in December, when a layer of snow rises 10–15 cm above the ground. Seed beds are covered with spruce branches, which will serve as excellent protection against freezing of the earth. Cold season - optimal time for natural seed stratification. As soon as the spring rays of the sun melt the snow cover on the ground, the seeds will be saturated with moisture and will soon give the first green sprouts.

The seedlings that you get from seeds will repay your care with high quality and good immunity to infectious diseases and pests.

Reproduction of mock orange with layering

In the spring, when there is a clear trend towards an increase in temperature, free the mother bush from the shoots by cutting them off. During the summer, an adult jasmine bush will surround itself with young growth. The strongest shoots are suitable for reproduction.

Getting a shoot to take root is very simple. Drag the base of the branch, where the first developed kidney is located, with copper or aluminum wire. The procedure will initiate the formation of the root system of the future jasmine bush. Do not forget to just bend the branch to the ground and fix it with a wire in a shallow groove dug in advance. Sprinkle the shoot with a layer of sand and peat on top.

After 1.5 months, the layering will be crowned with new shoots. During the growing season, they are spudded twice with earth. In autumn, new shoots are made shorter, separated from mother plant and transplanted to another place to grow.

Reproduction of the jasmine bush by cuttings

It is best to stock up on planting material in June. To understand whether the shoot is suitable for reproduction or not, it is tested for strength: a branch about 10 cm long, bent into a ring, should not break.

Shoots for planting are harvested in the morning, because it is at this time of the day that they contain a lot of moisture. Under the first ripe bud from the bottom, the branch is cut along an oblique line, above the upper bud - in a straight line. The leaves are only partially shortened, they are not completely cut off.

The fastest cuttings will take root in the greenhouse. Before planting the young parts of the bush, place them for 20 hours in a special solution to stimulate root growth, and then bury them 3 cm in a mixture consisting of equal parts of peat and sand. The interval between the cuttings should be at least 5 cm. Make sure that the lower leaves of the cuttings remain above the ground.

For the next 2 weeks, you need to take maximum care of the planted branches: ventilate the greenhouse, hide the cuttings from direct sunlight and spray them regularly. Soon light dots will appear on the shoots, followed by roots. At the same time, begin to accustom the seedlings to the air.

Not a problem if you don't have a greenhouse. Cuttings can be rooted right in the garden. Cut branches are planted at an angle and covered from above. plastic bottle with cut neck. For the next 2 days, the impromptu greenhouse cannot be removed, then young seedlings can be ventilated daily so that they do not burn out.

Reproduction of mock orange lignified shoots

To implement this breeding method, wait until autumn, when the jasmine bush is left without leaves. Now you can prepare planting material - branches about 15 cm long. An oblique cut is made under the first bud at the base, and a straight cut above the last bud from above. Put the cut shoots in a box, sprinkle them well with sand and leave them in a cold place for winter overexposure.

In the spring, start planting until the buds swell on the overwintered cuttings. If you do not miss the time, in the fall, young twigs will have strong roots and new shoots.

Reproduction of terry jasmine by dividing the roots

This method is used when you need to quickly get another jasmine bush with minimal time. Dig up a jasmine bush and carefully separate a bunch of its roots so that each plot has a basal shoots. It is most convenient to divide the bush with garden shears. The procedure is contraindicated during the growing season, the optimal time for reproduction is from late September to late October.

Potential pests for jasmine terry

In spite of a high degree decorative during flowering and generally "airy" in appearance, the jasmine shrub is a robust plant with almost unbending health. He is not afraid infectious diseases, from which many plants in the garden suffer, and insects are indifferent to mock orange. However, from time to time it will not be superfluous to inspect the shrub for the presence of pests - for prevention. by the most effective tool from harmful insects on jasmine there has always been and remains laundry soap, or rather its solution. Its recipe is very simple:

  1. Grind a bar of laundry soap (300 g) with a coarse grater.
  2. Pour the resulting chips into a bucket with a volume of 10 liters and then pour 2 liters of warm water. Stir the solution until the soap is completely dissolved.
  3. Now pour another 8 liters of warm water into the concentrated soap solution and mix the solution until smooth.

With the help of the received funds, you can drive weevils, aphids, spider mite and mealybug. The soft false shield will not resist the soap attack.

Jasmine terry in creating landscape compositions

Mock orange can easily become the highlight of your garden. For example, pink double jasmine is often used as a hedge, planting bushes around the site. The distance between the bushes should be at least 1 m - the plant grows with pleasure in breadth, turning into a picturesque wall of living leaves and flowers.

If you skillfully collect several different varieties of jasmine on your site, you can admire it beautiful flowering for 2 months! So, at the beginning of summer, flowers appear at the common mock orange. Behind him, the fragrant small-leaved mock orange begins to bloom, passing the baton to Schrenk's mock orange - a beautiful bush, the crown of which is translucent. At the end of June, the eye of allergy sufferers is pleased with the odorless mock orange (absolutely hypoallergenic specimen). The series of profusely flowering shrubs closes the Lemoine mock orange - the most spectacular variety of its kind in terms of flowering.

Low-growing varieties of terry jasmine play the role of the first violin in rock gardens and rockeries, and tall representatives of the species are good in individual planting.

A wonderful tandem creates a garden jasmine with ordinary flowers, planted next to lilacs. Mock orange, whose flowers are decorated with fluffy fringe, is best used for a single planting.

You can’t even imagine how many unique properties ordinary and common plants can have. In pursuit of exotic species with a capricious nature and a lot of difficulties in terms of care, many summer residents simply ignore the popular green spaces that live and develop freely in our area. Among them is the jasmine shrub.

Jasmine shrub. Features of planting and care

This multi-stemmed inhabitant can grow up to four meters in height and be painted in a variety of colors. Most often it has snow-white or delicate cream shades, covering cream flowers and whole leaves. Gained great popularity due to unpretentiousness in the choice of conditions of detention and excellent aroma. During the flowering period, garden jasmine emits a sweetish, fresh scent that fills the garden with a real fragrance. If you plant different types of bushes in your backyard, this will allow you to enjoy charming compositions and surprisingly pleasant aroma long time.

The jasmine bush enjoys special respect in eastern countries, where it is called the symbol of love and passion. Based on this exotic creation, the most valuable essential oils, which help to relieve anxiety, stress, anxiety, depression and anxiety, raise the hormonal status, and are also an indispensable component of highly effective cosmetic products. In addition, the pleasant smell of jasmine attracts beneficial insects- pollinators, including:

  • butterflies;
  • bees;
  • bumblebees.

Garden jasmine is often called mock orange, which is associated with the purpose of shrub wood in the old days. Even in Russia, pipes for smoking pipes were made from such material, from where such an interesting name came from.

Varieties of jasmine varieties

As mentioned above, the jasmine plant is represented in nature by a variety of varieties and many hybrids. However, there are some of the most popular and known species which are great for home growing in the garden. Let's highlight some of them:

Also, the people appreciate the variety pink jasmine, however, its cultivation is accompanied by certain difficulties. As a result of diligent breeding work and crossing the three above species, scientists have developed many new varieties, including: Efironos, Glacier, Alabaster other.

How to plant jasmine

Planting jasmine in open ground - very important event, which determines the beauty and success of the growth of culture in the future. In order for garden jasmine to delight you with a long and lush flowering, you should correctly respond to a number of important points including site selection and soil preparation. It is important to remember that a comfortable distance between the roots and the walls of the hole should be at least 10 centimeters. It is better to sprinkle the rhizome with earth, deepening the root neck by 3 centimeters. Then it remains to water the bush abundantly and wait for rooting.

When choosing suitable place for landing should be guided by the feature that the plant in a special way actively grows and blooms in the south side of the site. However, even if planted in the northern zone or in partial shade, development will be carried out quite normally. It is important that there is no stagnation of groundwater in the soil composition, which can cause the development of fungal microorganisms and putrefactive processes.

Many beginner summer residents often ask themselves the question: “When is it better to plant a bush in open ground and in what place will it bloom well?”.

The best time to plant a tree is early spring or late fall . Try to have time to implement the action before the final opening of the kidneys. Experienced gardeners plant a crop in September or mid-October, stating that with such a planting it will bloom very profusely.

As for the soil composition, the tree lives quietly in almost any soil, but a special development efficiency is noticed when growing in a fertile substrate. Immediately before planting in open ground, the ground must be carefully dig and equip a hole, at least 50 centimeters deep. Later, nitrophoska is poured into the hole in the proportion of 30 grams per 1 seedling. drainage layer created from the following materials:

  • gravel;
  • sand;
  • brick;
  • rubble.

Reproduction features

Currently, the jasmine shrub propagates in the following ways:

  • in a seed way;
  • cuttings;
  • layering;
  • dividing the bush.

Sowing seeds can be done at any time of the year. If you carry out the procedure in winter, it is important that it is calm outside, and the thermometer does not fall below -10 degrees Celsius. It is important to close the seeds with straw or coniferous branches. In spring, the protection is removed, while the seedlings are protected from the aggressive effects of direct sunlight.

When propagated by cuttings planting material is harvested in the fall and stored in the basement for winter season. In early spring landing in open ground. As soon as the cuttings grow slightly, they need to be spudded, which will be a good stimulation of the growth of the rhizome.

To form layers, in early spring, you need to choose young shoots that are laid out in the beds and sprinkled with soil. When young shoots appear, layering spuds. AT autumn period they are separated from the main bush.

Reproduction by dividing the bush considered the easiest and most common way to propagate jasmine. At this stage, it is important to carefully separate the excavated root system, being careful not to damage it. Separate parts of jasmine are planted in different places of the territory.

Garden jasmine care

If you intend to plant a terry shrub in your garden, be prepared to give it due attention and care, otherwise it will not be able to bloom as it should. Only if the key rules are followed exactly as established, the bush will delight you with lush and abundant flowering for a long time:

  • Every week, the soil around the shrub needs to be loosened, removing weeds;
  • Fertilizing with organic and mineral fertilizers is carried out regularly;
  • From time to time it is necessary to pinch the tops of the bushes to give the proper shape.

Jasmine needs abundant watering, the intensity of which should be maximum in dry weather. Drying out of the soil is an extremely undesirable phenomenon that will cause the leaves to turn yellow, as a result of which the culture will stop blooming. About three liters of water should be poured per square meter of territory.

The first feeding activities are carried out only a year after planting, and in mineral and organic preparations are used as fertilizers. In a 10-liter bucket of water, 30 grams of superphosphate and 15 grams of urea are stirred. This top dressing is suitable for processing two bushes. As a good organic fertilizer, you can use slurry, which is diluted in a ratio of 1:10.

It is known that jasmine is characterized by excellent winter hardiness, so no special preparations are necessary. It is worth covering only young shoots using a light-colored cloth or rope.

Jasmine needs regular pruning work, which are intended to give a neat shape and look. Every year, sanitary and cosmetic pruning should be carried out, thinning out the bushes and removing dried inflorescences to thin the crown. Once every three years, old shoots over the age of 12 should be removed.

In addition, pruning is also intended for anti-aging purposes, during which, in the spring, a bush is cut to 0.5 meters. If the stems are cut, it is better to treat the cut points with a garden pitch, which will prevent fungal diseases.

Protection against diseases and pests

Despite strong immunity and excellent endurance, jasmine needs reliable protection from spider mites, aphids, weevil and soft false scales. Preventive measures consist in treating the shrub with various insecticides. As organic fertilizers laundry soap or ash should be used.

When gardening, jasmine is grown in large mixborders, being an indispensable addition to garden landscape. Dwarf varieties look great in rock gardens or rocky gardens. They can be planted in flower beds, where they play the role of a living border or edging.

Watering and spraying is carried out using soft, settled water.

It is better to transplant a young flower every year, but when the plant grows to adulthood, then such events are carried out every three years. When transplanting, it is recommended to use ready-made soil formulations, and a thorough drainage word should be prepared in the planting container.

Home culture needs pruning and pinching, which have a positive effect on the external condition and turn the bush into a lush tree. Reproduction of indoor plants occurs with the help of cuttings or layering.

Varieties of garden jasmine

It is noteworthy that garden jasmine received its second, not so melodic name due to practical application its strong wood for the manufacture of smoking pipes. But let's not talk about bad habits, but let's talk better about the charms of this plant.

Garden jasmine is a shrub with small leaves and flowers on thin branches and trunks covered with brown or gray bark. Mock orange flowers are more often white, but there are also creamy-white ones with a persistent, memorable aroma, they are distinguished by shape:

  • Simple.
  • Terry. Bushes with such flowers are more decorative.

This one is absolutely unpretentious to growing conditions:

  • Unpretentious to the light, so it can be planted on north side from buildings and structures, where there is more shade, but in the sun, of course, it blooms much more abundantly.
  • It also has no preference for soil. It takes root perfectly even in soils oversaturated with moisture, it does not like only stagnant groundwater. The garden jasmine flower also copes stoically with drought.

Depending on the variety, mock orange begins to bloom from the end of May and ends in early August, leaving fruits in the form of boxes with seeds at the place of flowering.

Note!
It turned out that not all types of garden jasmine can please and impress the discoverer with an incomparable fragrance.
Some of the mock orange varieties are completely devoid of an attractive smell, so when choosing seedlings, specify the type of plant.

But not everyone, probably, knows that this so popular shrub with small delicate flowers has many varieties:

  • The crowned mock orange moved to our latitudes from the south Western Europe. Just this tall (up to 3 meters) shrub with beautiful carved and large leaves and gave jasmine glory fragrant plant. It blooms in the first half of June and for almost twenty days pleases us with the beauty and fragrance of a scattering of white flowers.
The crown variety is distinguished by its longevity (about 30 years) and rapid growth. There are several garden forms this type of mock orange with characteristic beautiful leaves.
  • Jasmine "Shrenka" came to us from the Far East, from China and Korea. It blooms one of the first at the turn of May and June and continues to rage with color and delicate aroma for about 25 days. The leaves of this variety are ovoid with slightly tapered tips, the inflorescences consist of nine large flowers, reaching up to 4 cm in diameter. This variety is characterized by high frost resistance, withstanding a decrease in air temperature to -25 degrees.
  • The small-leaved mock-orange belongs to undersized shrubs. In the process of flowering, it is literally covered with flowers similar in shape and size to cherry blossoms, enveloping the bush with the sweet aroma of wild strawberries.

  • Odorless mock orange reaches up to four, and three meters wide. This shrub usually has many green shoots and large leaves from 7 to 12 cm (on non-flowering shoots) in length, racemes of five flowers, also quite large about 5 cm. The odorless variety blooms for a whole month starting at the end of June.
  • Garden flower "Gordon" one of the tallest of the mock orange genus can reach 4 meters in height if it grows under sunbeams. And subject to landing in shady area stretches out to 5-6 meters. Large, glossy dark green leaves and pure white flowers 4.5 cm in size make Gordon's mock orange the most decorative of the entire family.
It blooms in the second half of June, lavishing around the most delicate, barely perceptible aroma.
  • The fluffy mock orange blooms from the second half of July to the beginning of August, reaching a height of 3 meters. It is called so because of the airy fluffy leaves. Flowering is practically not accompanied by a smell, but large flowers beautiful shape, collected in inflorescences of 5-7, and sometimes 10 pieces, decorate the shrub very much.

In addition to erect shrubs, the family also has climbing garden jasmine.

Most famous varieties, bred by breeders for planting in gardens, sometimes have very fancy names:

  • "Academician Komarov".
  • Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya.
  • "Ballet of the Moths".
  • "Air Assault".
  • "Pearl".

  • "Arctic".
  • "Unusual".

In order for the garden to become an object of your pride and give constant pleasure to you and your guests, it needs appropriate care.

The instruction for conducting garden work says that care should equally be:

  • Permanent.
  • Painstaking.
  • Competent.

As for any other plant, in the case of growing a chubuk with your own hands, without the involvement of professional gardeners, you need to be able to solve several issues:

  • Timely planting and care of garden jasmine.
  • Feeding, watering.
  • Reproduction.
  • Possibility of neighborhood with others.
  • Conditions for transplanting adult bushes.

Attention!
The price of performing garden manipulations "somehow" (not only in the case of jasmine) - damage seed material, wasted time and disappointment instead of pleasure.

planting jasmine

Planting and caring for jasmine in the garden is fundamental work, the quality of which depends on the final result.

A few rules for a gardener for planting a chubuk:

  • The best survival period for jasmine is autumn in the calendar range from September 10 to October 10. If spring is in the yard, but you still can’t wait to plant jasmine, then at least wait until the leaves bloom. Otherwise, the bush may die.

  • As already mentioned, the chubuk feels good both in the sun and in the shade, the difference is only in the intensity of flowering..
  • The soil for planting jasmine bushes should have good natural drainage., in the absence of it, be sure to provide it with additional measures.
  • When digging bushes, when planting, do not bury the stem into the ground along with the root, it can rot.

  • The root is immersed to a depth of about 50 cm.
  • In the case of non-single planting, the bushes should be located at a distance of at least 0.5 m from each other. For a hedge, the optimal distance is 0.5-0.8 m.
  • At the end of planting, watering is recommended in the amount of one or two buckets of water..

Jasmine Care

After planting, garden jasmine care comes down to three things:

  • Fertilize the soil underneath.
  • Hydration is adequate.
  • Crown formation - timely pruning and removal:
    • Growing inside the bush, broken off shoots and branches.
    • Old dead branches.
    • Weak branches.

Advice!
Jasmine will bloom in the first year of planting.
When flowering stops, weak branches should be cut, for better development stronger and stronger branches forming a beautifully shaped crown.

In autumn, young branches will appear on them, which will give wild bloom for next season. To achieve maximum flowering intensity, old stems are cut to the base.

Watering and feeding jasmine

Already on next year after planting, it is necessary to start enriching the soil with mineral fertilizers.

For one large or two small jasmine bushes, the following composition is prepared:

  • Water - 10 liters.
  • Superphosphate -30 gr.
  • Urea - 15 gr.
  • Potassium sulfide - 15 gr.

It has always been a priority to contribute natural fertilizers. For example, manure diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10 is poured under each bush.

At the end of flowering, it is good to add wood ash from burnt branches of plum, birch, and apple trees to the soil under jasmine bushes.

Advice!
During the flowering period, water the jasmine bushes abundantly (25-30 liters every day).

reproduction

  • Jasmine is propagated in spring and summer at a temperature of +20 degrees.
  • For propagation, mature shoots are used in spring, green cuttings in summer.

  • When the first shoots appear on the cutting, you need to spud it for a powerful growth of the root system.

Garden jasmine bushes will perfectly fit and enrich any exterior, perfectly combined with other flowering plants.

Throughout the year, this garden shrub remains almost unnoticed, but as soon as it blooms, the fragrant honey aroma makes passers-by look around in admiration. How does the jasmine plant reproduce and what kind of care does it need so that it always pleases with decorative forms and violent spring flowering?

The high cost, and sometimes the inaccessibility of high-quality planting material, forces gardeners to independently master the cultivation of the plant they like. There are several ways to propagate jasmine with their own advantages and disadvantages, so it’s worth dwelling on each in more detail.

  • Growing jasmine from seeds

Ripened seeds are collected from the selected plant and sown before the onset of severe frosts, around the end of November - early December, when there are already 10-15 centimeters of snow on the ground. Small seeds are embedded in the soil to a shallow depth and cover the area with a piece of agrofiber and pine branches. When the snow melts in the spring and the soil is saturated with moisture, the seeds will begin to germinate and green shoots will soon appear. Now it is important to provide them with regular watering and protection from the scorching sun until the seedlings get stronger. It will be possible to transplant them to a permanent place no earlier than in a year and a half, when the branches become a little stiff.

Ripened seeds are collected from the selected plant and sown before the onset of severe frosts.

The process is quite painstaking and time-consuming, and the young jasmine obtained from seeds will bloom only after six or seven years. But the surviving seedlings will be hardened, frost-resistant, with good immunity, able to resist diseases and pests.

  • layering

When rejuvenating an adult bush or with sanitary pruning, the mother plant produces many new young shoots over the summer. Excess shoots are cut off at the root, and the strongest and most promising cuttings are bent to the ground in shallow grooves and fixed at the very base with wire. The holes are sprinkled with a mixture of sand and soil, watered abundantly and pressed with a brick to better retain moisture. Soon the shoot will take root, and after about 5-7 weeks, new shoots will appear on it. During the season, the layers are regularly watered and spud two or three times, stimulating the development of the root system. In autumn or early spring, the young plant is separated from the mother bush, the branches are shortened and transplanted.

This breeding method is very fast and efficient, but it is applicable only if it is possible to care for layering.

The best time for this is the beginning of summer, when the plant is full of vitality, there is still a long period of heat ahead, and you can evaluate the varietal characteristics by the flowering of the mother plant.

For rooting, cuttings no longer than 10-12 centimeters long are suitable, which do not break if they are bent into a ring. On cut branches, the lower leaves are cut off, and the rest are shortened by half. You can root the cuttings in the garden or in the greenhouse, the main thing is to provide nutritious, well-drained soil and sufficient sunlight. transparent cover in the form glass jar or a cut plastic bottle will create the necessary "greenhouse" microclimate for the development of the plant. From time to time, the cuttings need to be aired, shaded on hot summer days and, of course, regularly watered. As soon as you notice that new buds have appeared at the growth point, it means that the stalk is safely rooted. But it’s not worth removing the shelter completely - tender seedlings are still fragile and weak. For the winter, they are also recommended to be spudded and covered with wood shavings or dry needles, and replanted only next year in spring and autumn.

For planting jasmine in a permanent place, choose sunny areas with fertile soil. This does not mean that the shrub will not grow on poor soil or in the shade, but in this case you are unlikely to wait for abundant fragrant flowering.

Garden jasmine is a shrub that reaches a height of 1 to 2.5 meters and a crown diameter of up to 2 meters. Consider this when placing it next to other landings.

The plant is frost-resistant, when grown in the middle lane, only young seedlings need winter shelter. After transplantation, garden jasmine adapts for a relatively long time and blooms only in the third year.

For planting jasmine in a permanent place, choose sunny areas with fertile soil.

Having picked up a fertile site for planting with loose soil and without stagnant groundwater, further care behind jasmine will be uncomplicated. Several times during the summer it is necessary to weed weeds, remove shoots and loosen the ground shallowly, providing oxygen to the roots.

As spring dressings, it is recommended to use liquid fertilizers applied during irrigation - mullein infusion or a mineral complex of nitroammophoska. After the bush has faded, superphosphate is added, embedding the granules in the soil or wood ash.

Garden jasmine is quite resistant to diseases, but sometimes you can notice yellowing of the leaves, developmental delay and poor flowering - these are signs of chlorosis.

Story about what you need to know proper fit and care

This disease is usually caused by a lack of magnesium and iron in the soil. Some prophylactic drugs contain a lot of nitrogen, so experienced gardeners recommend using Orton Micro-Fe.

The main pests of jasmine are mites, aphids, scale insects and thrips. They damage, as a rule, young parts of the plant, destroying green shoots, buds and leaves. For the purpose of prevention, a “hot shower” is used, watering the shrub with water at 40-45 ⁰С. In case of infestation, it is recommended to treat the plant with appropriate insecticides.

Pruning and rejuvenation

With snow-white fragrant inflorescences, the bush always looks impressive, but after flowering, jasmine often becomes untidy, with shoots and old branches sticking out in all directions. And sometimes it even turns into dense thickets, which after a few years cease to bloom. Therefore, it is important to know how to care for jasmine so that it always pleases the eye. And in this case, only timely pruning and proper crown formation allows you to get an ornamental plant at any time of the year.

Video about the features of pruning ornamental shrubs

Here are some rules:

  1. In early spring, all broken, snow-damaged and frost-damaged branches are cut.
  2. To give the bush a symmetrical shape, shoots that are too long and strong are shortened, thereby stimulating the growth of lateral and annual shoots.
  3. Old branches and young shoots are removed, which thicken and shade the crown.
  4. Also, without regret, they remove the branches of the past and the year before last, which will no longer bloom profusely, but will only draw strength from the plant.
  5. After flowering, branches older than 2 years are also removed and wilted inflorescences are cut off so that the jasmine does not expend energy on seed ripening.
  6. To prevent infections, all sections are recommended to be processed using a clay "talker" or garden pitch.

Shrub rejuvenation is a radical pruning. In early spring, three or four of the strongest and relatively young shoots are shortened by 30-40 centimeters, and the remaining branches and shoots are cut at soil level. During the season, the plant will give a lot of young shoots, from which a new garden jasmine will form.
