Self-installation of platbands on interior doors. How to fix platbands on interior doors video Installing a door platband

Installation of interior doors involves framing door structure so decorative element like platbands. At the same time, many homeowners try to cope with this work with their own hands. It is believed that the installation of platbands is easy. How to fix desired part, can be seen in the photo or video showing step by step actions. The result will be a transformation of the structure: the platbands will mask the defects formed between the doorway and the wall plane.

Splitting the door frame

Platbands can be made from:

  • plastics;
  • natural tree.

The selection of cashouts by material is based on what they are made of. interior doors. If the structure is wooden, then the frame must be made of wood of the same grade. And if the interior is designed in high-tech style. then metal trims will look great.

According to the format, it is customary to divide cashers into:

  • planar;
  • sculptural;
  • rounded.

Most often flat elements are used. And curly (sculptural) cashing is used as a decor, if the idea of an interior designer requires it.

The specifics of the installation of platbands

The platbands are mounted in different ways: overhead and telescopic platbands are distinguished. Wooden or MDF platbands are most often attached using liquid or ordinary nails without hats. But if you decide to work with nails with caps, but they need to be “driven” deep into the wood, and then hide these places with a corrective wax pencil or acrylic sealant acceptable shade.

Application liquid nails for installation is allowed only if there is a leveled plane of adjacent walls. Otherwise, gaps form between the wall and decor details.

Saw angle selection techniques

To correctly choose the angle of the cut, you need to pay attention to the high relief of the casing with front side, and then select one of the ways to perform the cut.

  1. If the fastenings of the parts have a flat plane, then the cut is made at an angle of 90 °. A similar saw cut angle is required for mounting a cashing with a capital, while joining is carried out horizontally or vertically.
  2. Rounded platbands need to be cut at an angle of 45 ° - the main thing is to do it carefully, in order to avoid gaps during further joining.
  3. An even cut is made with a miter box or a hacksaw with fine teeth. Ideally, you need to cut the blank into trimming machine with turntable.

Advice. To give aesthetics washed down, it should be painted over with varnish before installing the casing.

About telescopic cashing

Such frames are suitable for mounting without fasteners. Telescopic products do not require the use of additional extensions, since it is possible to correct the gaps between the device and the width of the doorway by aligning the sliding frame. In this case, the tongue in the form of a beard is inserted into the recess on the door frame.

O existing differences in the operation of a particular telescopic product, you should read the instructions attached to it: schemes and installation technologies for products from different manufacturers may vary.

Advice. The resulting gaps between the frame plates are removed with a sealant. It is worth filling the gaps with them after the construction tape is glued.

How to install trim on the door: video

Platband installation: photo

Door platbands are designed to mask the gap between the doorway and the door frame. They are selected according to the required texture and width, and the color is chosen exactly the same as that of the door leaf. They are made from different materials and are divided into wooden, plastic, laminated, MDF and veneered. The work of mounting them is the last step in installing the door. By the beginning of these works, all other repairs, except for installation floor plinths, should already be completed. This article will discuss how to make and how to properly install door frames.

Types of door frames

Today, the construction market is filled with platbands of various shapes: carved and figured, teardrop-shaped and semicircular.

They play the role of finishing decoration of the door. Some sellers, in order to visually reduce the price, indicate the cost of only the canvas and the box. But having started to install, out of ignorance it turns out that there are not enough platbands, and you can buy them in addition only for a fee. Therefore, even when buying a door, you must definitely check their availability in the configuration. Of course, the price of door frames is quite affordable, but another problem may arise when buying - color matching. It will not be difficult to choose the required shade of trim for a painted or laminated door, but it will be extremely difficult for a wooden or veneered door.

The standard width of the door trim is 7 cm, thickness - 1 cm, height - 210 cm. For an interior door with one leaf, 5 trim strips are required, and for a door with two leaves - 6 strips.

If you only need to frame the doorway, then two and a half planks are enough. In addition, manufacturers produce door frames of any size in width, height and thickness.

Tip: when choosing platbands for interior doors, their color should completely match the color of the door leaf. And when choosing a frame for the entrance metal door, from the inside, the shade is selected according to the color of the walls of the corridor.

Door platbands are made of MDF, plastic, natural wood, aluminum or steel. As decorative coating laminated film, veneer, facing plastic or paint composition is used.

What is a telescopic platband?

Outwardly, it looks like a regular door casing, but has a ledge for connection with extensions and a door frame. Their use is most optimal if the door frame is a couple of centimeters narrower than the thickness of the wall. Thanks to a special protrusion, it is tightly fastened in the longitudinal grooves of the end door frame.

At correct installation fasteners become completely invisible, which gives the whole structure a look of solidity, durability and strength. But if the distance is incorrectly calculated, the casing will not fit tightly into the box and there will be a gap. The design will immediately acquire an ugly and untidy look.

What is a capital?

The capital is a relatively recent decoration of the door. Although their main function is exclusively to decorate doors, they also belong to the category of door frames.

In most cases, they are made of solid wood or MDF. They are produced in various shapes and decorated with curly ruffles. The capital is made both standard and custom sizes. After their installation, the door takes on a rich and finished look.

How to make door frames

Today, the construction market is represented a large number of all kinds of door frames. They differ not only in material, but also in size, and in color scheme. You can also make them yourself at home, this will reduce the cost of repairs. But in order to make high-quality platbands, you will need special woodworking tools and at least a little experience working with such equipment.

Below is a list of tools that will facilitate the work on the manufacture of platbands. Some of them can be replaced with a planer, but thereby increasing labor costs.

Required tools:

  • sawmill for the manufacture of blanks;
  • planer to create a right angle;
  • thicknesser to achieve required thickness blanks;
  • a vertical milling cutter to create a pattern (not needed if the casing is simple without a pattern);
  • electric Sander and milling cutter;
  • auxiliary tools: squares, rulers, pencils.

Material selection

The board for platbands is selected only well-dried, otherwise it will lead over time. The degree of drying is determined by the sound. To do this, they tap on it with a finger, if the sound is deaf, this means that the board has not yet dried, and if it is sonorous, the material is ideal for work.

In addition to sound, when choosing a board, you should pay attention to its color.

It should be uniform, and blue spots mean that the drying technology has been violated. In the future, they can be hidden only by painting with opaque paint.

The surface of the board should not have knots. This not only worsens its appearance, but also increases the risk of fracture of the finished clypeus in this particular place.

Manufacturing

Selecting material and preparing essential tool, you can start making door trim. First, blanks are cut required dimensions, which are calculated individually for each door. It is worth noting here that the quality result directly depends on how sharply sharpened cutting knives on machines and machines.

When the platband is ready, it is polished. This is done in two stages: the first is rough grinding electric machine, second - manual processing with fine-grained skins. At the second stage, all circular scratches left by the electric machine should be removed. The finished platband is covered with a protective compound.

How to fix door frames

In total, there are four main ways to fasten door trim: using finishing and liquid nails, on self-tapping screws or on special fasteners called "beaks".

Finishing nails

This is one of the most popular ways. It has a number of advantages: if necessary, the platbands are easy to dismantle and reinstall, and the fastening process itself is simple and reliable.

To fasten the platbands, nails with a flat, narrow head are selected. It is not difficult to calculate their length, they should enter the door frame to a depth of 1.5-2 cm. The average length of finishing nails for platbands is about 4 cm.

Tip: if you can't buy flat-head nails, you can cut them with side cutters.

To facilitate the work, points for fastening are pre-marked on the platbands. They are placed at an equal distance from each other along the entire length of the bar. The main thing here is to maintain the right balance, it is often not recommended to place them, but too rarely is also bad. Experts advise keeping a distance of 50 cm.

Liquid Nails

They are a special glue in tubes. Mounting on it is very simple, the glue is simply applied to the casing with reverse side just before fastening. Then the bar is pressed tightly against the wall, held for several seconds, after which it can be released. Everything, the platband is installed.

The advantage of this method of fastening is not only in the simplicity and speed of work, but also in the fact that there are no traces of fastening on the front side of the platbands. The disadvantage is the complexity of its dismantling and not too much reliability of fastening.

Self-tapping fastening

Due to its simplicity and reliability, this method is gaining more and more popularity. For wooden architraves wood screws with a diameter of 6 mm and a length of 2-2.5 cm are used.

Places for self-tapping screws are pre-marked on the platbands. After that, small holes are drilled, which guarantees further excellent result and protect the wood from splitting when screwing the screw.

Tip: for less visibility of the self-tapping screw head, it is “recessed” into the wood, having previously drilled a small recess.

Special mounts "beaks"

Their advantages are good appearance, easy installation and operation. But there is also a significant drawback. Most architraves are made of MDF, and when removing the "beak" there is a chance that it will delaminate.

How to install door frames

To install wooden platbands you will need:

  • wood saw;
  • fasteners (finishing nails and glue)
  • goniometer;
  • roulette.

Stages of work

  • First, the platbands are applied along the height of the door, and the required length is measured. Then the bar is placed on flat surface and with the help of a square, a right angle is marked. The excess is cut off;
  • the platband with the finished corner is applied to the door frame, aligned along the edges and bottom. The height corresponding to the internal rumble of the door frame is noted;
  • then, starting from the mark made, an angle of exactly 45 degrees is measured with a goniometer and marked with a pencil. The excess is cut off and the casing is temporarily set aside;

  • repeating the entire sequence, the parallel side is marked;

Tip: the top trim is prepared last, only after both side strips have already been cut and installed. This will prevent errors in marking and exclude the possibility of the formation of cracks at the junction.

  • after both side trims are cut off, their installation begins. Carnations are driven into the door frame, after which, with the help of wire cutters, the hat is removed from them, leaving a sharp corner. The length of the stud on the surface for installing the casing is approximately 5 mm;
  • nails are hammered with a distance of about 50 cm. Usually they are placed at the top, bottom and two in the middle;

  • for better adhesion of the casing to the box, glue is applied to it. At this stage, the main thing is not to overdo it, and when pressed, the glue should not squeeze out;

  • when nailing the bar to the door frame, it is not recommended to hit it directly. For this purpose, a wooden block wrapped in cloth;
  • having attached the finished casing and leveling it, with strong blows through the bar we put it on nails;
  • when both side platbands are installed, the marking of the top one begins. Both of its 45-degree angles are measured not with a goniometer, but by directly applying it over the side planks and drawing the cut point with a pencil.

Door frame installation completed.

Nuances when installing platbands

The presence of a nail or self-tapping screw can be made invisible with a wax corrector or acrylic sealant of a suitable color.

To avoid gaps in the joints of the platbands, the angles of the upper bar are measured according to the cuts of the vertical bars, taking into account their errors.

It happens that the platbands at the junction have a discrepancy. This is due to the unevenness of the walls or the curvature of the planks themselves due to improper storage. Fixing this is quite simple, just connect the planks together with a finishing nail.

If minor gaps are found, they are masked with an acrylic sealant or wax corrector of a suitable color.

When there are significant defects around the box, a wide door trim is suitable for masking them. Its width is 10-12 cm, and with individual order maybe even more.

If you are wondering how to glue the trim, then you can choose from several options. With perfectly smooth walls, liquid nails are used. Also, for additional fixation when installing on nails, acrylic glue or PVA is used, which lubricates the back of the casing. But it should be noted that there is only one really reliable fastening - on carnations.

As mentioned above, the installation of door frames is final stage all repair work. The platbands are mounted flush on the end, and visually it seems that on the wall. The most popular method of fastening is on thin carnations with a small hat. In the event that the platbands need to be fixed directly to the wall, liquid nails are used, but this method of fastening does not give a long-term guarantee.

For an interior door, the platband should be 10 cm higher than the doorway. Standard installation platbands are made with a cut at 45 degrees, but you can also do it at an angle of 90 degrees - it looks a little unusual.

If the opening in the wall is located on the side or is in contact with an adjacent wall, then the casing will not fit completely. It will be possible to cut beautifully in width only with an electric end saw. Accuracy for the platband is especially important, because its main role is decorative ornament and masking all the irregularities of the wall and the end of the door frame.

But there are cases when platbands are not needed, for example, a bathroom whose walls are tiled. They will not only look out of place there, but it will also be impossible to attach them. The only one possible way fasteners are liquid nails, but given high humidity premises, they will not last long.

For very wide (thick) walls, door frames are also not the best option. In this case, the slopes can simply be painted, wallpapered or plastered. Also, in most cases, door frames are not required when installing compartment doors.

Door frames are made from natural wood, laminated MDF boards or plastic. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages; a specific type of platband should be selected taking into account the specific installation site, general interior space and personal preference. In terms of price, they differ slightly, but the difference is not so significant that it has a decisive influence during the choice.

There are several ways to fasten the casing, depending on the angle of the connection.

Docking with cutting ends at an angle of 45 °

The most common and most universal way. Allows you to completely hide the places of cuts, looks beautiful.

Docking with cutting ends at an angle of 90 °

A very simple method, it has two options: the open ends of the cutting are located vertically or the visible ends of the cutting are located horizontally.

Docking with cutting ends at 90°, elongated horizontal trim with imitation of a bridge

It is rarely used and only to create exclusive interiors.

The platbands can be fixed with special thin nails with a reduced head diameter or without it. Professionals work with a pneumatic gun, but you should not buy it for one bath. The length of the nails is within two centimeters.

The second way of fastening the platbands is with the help of liquid glue. Both methods are equivalent from the point of view of builders, each can be used with the same quality of installation of platbands. small advantage use of glue - there are no visible places of fixation. But the heads of carnations can also be drowned a little and painted over with a building marker of the appropriate color.

Trim cutting

It is better to cut the moldings with a special electric miter saw. The saw table is installed under different angles, the cut is perfectly even, there are no chips and roughness. Such a saw is relatively inexpensive, and during the construction of a bath it will always come in handy. If necessary, it can be disconnected from metal table and use as portable tool– very convenient for any construction site.

Electric miter saw - photo

Important. When trimming the trim, check the serviceability of the tool.

The saw must be sharp and even, even the slightest beating of the bearings of the electric saw is excluded. Firmly press the side edges of the moldings to the persistent surfaces of fixtures or tools, the presence of even the slightest gaps will create you big problems during installation.

No desire to buy it? Then you should buy a factory miter box or make it yourself. The miter box allows trimming moldings at an angle of 90°, 45° or 30°.

You should not buy a Chinese low-quality miter box. They make it from recycled polyethylene, and during cooling it shrinks a lot, the position of the thrust planes changes. We advise you to check the device before starting work. Saw off several blanks in various positions, join them together with cuts and check the angles.

Let us consider in more detail how to install both plastic and wooden or MDF trim.

Installation of wooden or MDF platbands with sawed ends at an angle of 45 °

Step 1. Preparing the surface of the doorway and trim

With a construction knife, carefully cut off the protruding mounting foam, do not damage the door frame during cutting. Be especially careful when working near the visible corners of a box pasted over with a self-adhesive polyethylene film.

Check the position of the plane of the wall and the box. Take a flat rail and check the position of the wall and frame around the entire perimeter of the doorway. If there are problems, then you will have to solve them during the installation of the platbands. How this is done, we will describe below. The ends of the lower part of the architraves must be cut off - during transportation or long-term storage they could be damaged.

For one door you will need four long and two short architraves. You need to saw off with a margin of length 3 ÷ 4 centimeters.

Step 2. Mark the position of the architraves

The door frame has rounded corners, a right angle only from the extension side. We recommend placing the platbands in such a way that the rounding does not close. From the side of the extension, respectively, the corners of the casing must exactly match the corners of the extension.

The platband should not interfere with the opening and closing of the door

Important point! The platband should not interfere with work door hinges and "response" door lock. Attach the trim to the door frame and make marks on the top of the box with a thin pencil. They will be located 2÷3 mm above the joint angle of the door frame. These marks indicate the height of the long vertical architraves and the width of the short horizontal architraves at the bottom corners of the joint.

On the side of the extension, we recommend placing the marks on the architraves 1÷2 mm below the corner, this will allow them to completely cover the irregularities or damage to the surfaces of the extensions. If the extensions are in good condition, then you can put the platbands flush with them.

Do the markup slowly

Step 3. Attach vertical platbands to the marks and make marks on them at a certain height

Step 4: Cut the vertical architraves at a 45° angle

Don't give a big pitch cutting tool, the cut should be as even and clean as possible. When cutting, take into account the width of the cut, in some saws it can be up to three millimeters. Depart from the mark made by the width of the cut.

Step 5. Start nailing the prepared platbands

First, two vertical ones, and then a horizontal one.

Stud caps can be sunk a little and sealed with acrylic sealant to match the color. The same sealant can be used to seal gaps around the entire perimeter of the installed trim and door frame and in the upper corners of the cuts.

Important. The use of sealant to seal cracks indicates a low qualification of the performer. If you do not have enough experience, then it is better to practice a little with gashes than to eliminate the marriage later. Nail the first platbands from the inconspicuous side of the doors, get some practice.

There may be problems due to the fault of the builders of the bath, we will consider some of the ways to eliminate them. Most often, the plane of the wall does not lie in line with the plane of the door frame. The door frame is either too recessed, or vice versa, protrudes too much, or even slanted. In this regard, the platbands cannot fit snugly against the doorway, large gaps appear in the corners of the joint, regardless of how accurately the cuts are made.

There are several ways to solve such rather unpleasant problems.

Aligning the plane of the casing with the wall

First way. The simplest, but, unfortunately, not always applicable. With it, you can correct the non-parallelism of the planes of the wall and the box within 2 ÷ 3 millimeters. How it's done?

StepDescription
Step 1.Put the platband in the intended place, firmly press it to the box. It will move away from the plane of the wall a little, estimate the width of the gap between it and the wall. If it is within 2 ÷ 3 mm, then the gap at the junction is removed without the need for construction work.
Step 2On the working table of the saw or miter box, place a lining of the same thickness as the size of the gap. The lining should be narrow, not the entire width of the casing, only a few millimeters, it should only slightly raise one side of it during washing down.
Step 3Firmly press the casing to the desktop in this position, the lower plane of the casing on the side of the stop should slightly rise above the table. Carefully cut off the butt at the desired position. The cut end should have 45° to the axis and be with a slight slope to the surface. Now, in the “broken” position, the junction of the two platbands in the places washed down will be tight, you will not have to close the gaps with acrylic sealant.

Way two. Due to a violation of manufacturing technology, wooden platbands may have uneven surfaces or warping. Of course, ideally, their quality should be checked at the time of purchase. If the marriage was discovered already in the process of installing the platbands, then warping is easily eliminated. Position the vertical and horizontal architraves so that the notches lie flat. Drive a carnation into the butt, it will fix them in correct position and not let it move.

  1. The door frame is too recessed into the wall. We'll have to chisel the wall - the work is dusty, noisy and dirty. Place the casing against the box and draw a line on the wall. Bulgarian with diamond disc or with a saw (depending on the wall material) cut a line along the wall. And then you need to choose a niche for the casing. You can do this with a grinder, a chisel, etc. Constantly check the depth of the groove. If in some places the niche turned out to be too deep, close the recess with plaster or cement mortar and immediately put the casing in the desired depth position for a few seconds, this will help you make a niche more accurately. So you need to go around the entire door around the perimeter.
  2. If you have a platband made of natural wood and has a decent thickness, then you can slightly remove its reverse side with a planer. Work very carefully, do not rush, it will be impossible to correct the mistake.

Installation of architraves with cutting ends at an angle of 90 °

Cutting the ends of the trim at an angle is rare; such a door does not look very beautiful. This can only be done by completely inexperienced craftsmen. It is better to make open ends of the cuts on top of the vertical trim, in this place the incised end is hardly noticeable.

Slices in without fail skinned with fine sandpaper. Sanding should be done carefully so as not to damage the laminate on the front surface of the casing. Places of cuts need to be painted over with carpentry markers under the main color. All other operations, except for the angle of washing down the ends, do not differ from those described above.

During the fastening of the platbands with liquid glue, they should be kept in the desired position for several minutes. Carefully monitor the accuracy of the connection at the joints. Irregularities in the wall or problems with the quality of the architraves can widen the gap. To prevent this from happening, first fix the joint angle with a nail or place linings under it, taking into account the size of the gap between the casing and the wall. Only after that you can press the casing to the entire surface and wait for the liquid glue to cool.

Nail the first nail in the middle of the casing, this will allow you to turn it a little for a tight connection in the corners of the gash. Only after the corners on all sides of the door have laid down as they should, you can drive in nails to fix them. The distance between the nails is approximately 15÷20 centimeters. You need to check the distance by lightly tapping on the casing. You will immediately find out in which places there is a loose fit of the casing, drive additional carnations into them.

If during hammering the nail did not reach the end and bent - do not pull it out. Gently pinch the rest with pliers, rotate it left/right until it breaks off. Why not take it out? The nail could not be hammered in for a “good” reason beyond your control, which means that the second one will not completely enter this place either. It is much better to immediately hammer in a new one next to it, there will be fewer holes in the platbands.

It is possible to increase the tightness of the platbands across the entire width with polyurethane foam. Apply it on the back of the architraves in a thin strip along the entire length from the side of the wall, allow three to four minutes for partial drying. Otherwise, the foam will not adhere to the surface. Next, arrive the platbands in the recommended way. After complete drying polyurethane foam carefully cut off the visible part, the gap can be sealed with sealant. Although, if you do not overdo it with foam, then it should not act. During pressing, the ability of the foam to increase volume is significantly reduced.

In conclusion, we give practical advice for working with an air gun. It is designed in such a way that there are air outlets on the side. The piston is constantly lubricated with engine oil, during the exhaust of air, its smallest particles come out. When the studs need to be driven into the end of the platbands, an oily stain from the outgoing air always forms on the white wall. Be sure to place clean paper between the gun and the wall.

If you have cash white color- do not oil the nails, the oil will leave a stain at the entry point of the nail.

Installation of plastic platbands

In some cases, plastic platbands are difficult to distinguish from natural ones; in terms of their performance, they satisfy most owners. You can choose any color solution, thickness and width. Connecting elements included corner cuts, mounting and front profiles.

How to install them?

Step 1. Mark the mounting profile

The mounting profile is plastic product with special protrusions-latches for the front profile. The marking of the mounting profile does not need to be done very accurately, it subsequently closes and becomes invisible. The cuts in the corners of the platbands can be with a distance of several millimeters, the gap does not play a critical role. The distance is removed, as described in the above section on the installation of MDF and wooden architraves.

Step 2. Cut the blanks of the mounting profile

You will need four long vertical and two short horizontal ones. Cut at a 45° angle. You can use an electric saw for trimming, a device for cutting at an angle (miter box) or an ordinary grinder with thin disc for metal. The mounting profile can be shorter than the front one by 5 ÷ 10 millimeters. This makes sizing easier.

Step 3 Fix the mounting profile to the wall

Self-tapping screws are used for fastening.

Very important. The mounting part of the platband cannot always be referred to as a box, especially a thin Chinese one, and its installation on the wall requires the ideal quality of the latter. The best option– the walls are made of drywall, sheet plywood or OSB boards. Plaster is the worst option. If the quality of the plastering "wants the best", then you will have to trim the strip near the door frame with a spatula. Otherwise, the profile will bend in waves during pulling, and this is unacceptable.

The mounting profile is fixed with self-tapping screws in special seats. If you need to screw in the screws more often - not a problem. Drill a small entry hole in the plastic and screw in the screws. That's what some masters say. We advise you not to drill any special holes, the self-tapping screw is already screwed in perfectly. You need to start by fixing the center of the profile, the screws are screwed along the edges only after checking the position and correcting errors.

Step 4. Dimension the front profile, taking into account the thickness of the connecting elements of the corner cuts

In most cases, their thickness does not exceed two to three millimeters. But there is also much wider, it all depends on the manufacturer of the platbands. Dimensions are taken from the floor to the corner of the box.

Step 5. Saw off two vertical trims at an angle, fix them in the mounting profile

One of the advantages plastic architraves– the front profile can be shifted in the mounting and in this way precisely adjust its position. It is advisable to first install only vertical platbands.

Step 6. Insert the connecting profiles into the sawn ends of the front vertical platbands

File one end of the horizontal face profile and insert it into mounting profile. In this position, measure the place of sawing off the second end. Immediately keep in mind the thickness of the connecting profile.

Step 7: Cut the face profile at a 45° angle and insert it into place

In the hidden cavities of plastic platbands, you can mount electrical, telephone or Internet cables. Thanks to the corner fittings, the joints always turn out very neat, it is not necessary to use sealant to eliminate gaps.

It is better not to install plastic platbands on walls sheathed with clapboard. If you really want to, then you need to prepare ahead of time for this. Before installing the door frame along the perimeter of the doorway, a wooden lath with a thickness of approximately 0.5 ÷ 1.0 cm should be nailed. It must be carefully nailed into the convex places of the lining profile. Make sure that the slats do not bend in waves. During the installation of the door frame, it must be equal to the level of the rails. On the opposite side of the door frame, the alignment is done by an extension.

We do not recommend purchasing factory-made boxes for a bath, they do not differ high strength, during prolonged contact with water can completely lose their bearing capacity. In addition, the factory boxes are very narrow, in most cases you need to install additional trims. It is much more profitable to buy only door leafs in the store, it is difficult to make them yourself. And you can make the boxes yourself, while you immediately choose desired width make them stronger and more durable.

Video - Do-it-yourself installation of plastic platbands

They are able to significantly decorate the interior of the room, they can be made both from natural wood (the most expensive option), and from plastic or MDF. Plastic decorative platbands have a complete set of additional elements that simplify the installation process. With wooden ones you have to tinker.

Decorative platbands - photo

Their installation begins with washing down the upper corners. When taking measurements, you need to keep in mind not only the position of the trim in relation to the door frame, but also the combination of patterns. Some platbands have special technological places to facilitate the combination of patterns, and some need to be selected very carefully. Especially a lot of problems can arise during the docking of the upper and side trim. If you have little experience in performing such complex work, it is better not to take it. Do not waste time and money in vain.

Video - Installing decorative trim

Door frames play decorative role and are installed in order to hide the defects formed after the installation of the door. That is, they are a frame and hide the gap between the door frame and the opening. The material for their manufacture can be: wood, plastic, MDF.

They are mounted last, when the rest of the decoration is completed. Therefore, before installing them, you need to figure out and understand how to properly and accurately install them on interior doors.

How to fix door frames

You can use one of four methods to do this:

  1. on liquid nails;
  2. fasteners called "beaks";
  3. on finishing nails;
  4. self-tapping screws.

Finishing nails

This method of fastening has such advantages as: ease of installation and, if necessary, dismantling. Even an inexperienced person will cope with such a task. Therefore, this method is the most popular.

For high-quality fastening cashing will need nails with a narrow head. The length of the nails must be at least 4 cm, since they must enter the door frame by 1.5 - 2 cm.

Tip: If there are no nails with a small hat, but you don’t want to buy, you can cut off the hat from ordinary ones.

Before starting the installation, on the trim strip, mark the places for driving in nails. They should be evenly spaced along the entire length of the bar. The recommended step between them is 0.5 m.

Naa liquid nails

This special construction adhesive is available in tubes (tubes). In order to fix the platband, glue is applied to it from the back. Then the bar is pressed against the wall for a few seconds. All installation is completed.

The advantages of this method include ease of installation and on the bar, on the front side, there are no traces left as in the first case. The downside is that the mount cannot be considered reliable.

self-tapping screws

Simple and at the same time reliable way fastenings of wooden platbands. For work, you will need wood screws with a diameter of 6 mm. The platband is marked for fastening in increments of 50 cm, and small holes are drilled in it.

The holes will prevent cracking of the board when screwing in the screws. To prevent the heads of the self-tapping screws from being visible, they are sunk, for this you need to make a small indentation with a drill.

Fastening with special "beaks"

For fastening with "beaks" use the instructions attached to the product. The advantage of this method is ease of installation and attractive appearance.

The disadvantages include the fact that now most people use MDF trim. And when you remove the "beak" they can exfoliate.

Installation of door frames

To work, you will need to prepare tools:

  • hacksaw;
  • fasteners;
  • goniometer or miter box;
  • square;
  • roulette.

Work progress:

  1. The bar is applied vertically and mark the required length. Then, mark a right angle with a square and cut it off.
  2. Now it is applied again, aligned and marked on inner corner boxes.
  3. Using a goniometer, mark an angle of 45 ° and cut off.
  4. Do the same with the platband on the other side.
  5. After preparing the two blanks, you can proceed to their installation. To do this, carnations are driven into the door frame in increments of 50 cm. Then they bite off their hats so that an acute angle is obtained. The length of the nails on the surface of the box must remain at least 5 mm.
  6. For reliability, glue can be applied to the bar.
  7. Now a platband is applied to the door frame and with a mallet or through a bar wrapped in a rag, they are planted on carnations by tapping.
  8. After mounting the two side parts, they proceed to marking the top.
  9. The corners of the upper casing are measured by attaching it to the side ones.
  10. Having cut off the excess, the top is nailed in the same way as the side trim.

Types of trim for interior doors

Manufacturers offer us a huge range of door frames. The shape can be: figured, teardrop-shaped and semicircular.

The material from which they are made is also diverse, it is MDF, and plastic, and natural wood, aluminum or steel. The trim can be decorated with: laminated film, veneer, plastic or paint.

Telescopic casing

It looks like a regular one, differs from it by the presence of a ledge, which serves to connect with the door frame and the extension. If the box turned out to be already an opening, it would be the best option.

In case of improper installation, a gap will remain in the structure, which will spoil the appearance. Therefore, when installing a telescopic casing, it is necessary to do everything correctly, carefully and slowly.

Platbands are decorative overhead strips that perform a decorative and aesthetic load. Their main purpose is to create a frame for the door frame, simultaneously closing the gaps between the door frame and the wall and hiding small defects formed during the installation of the doors.

The installation of platbands on the door cannot be attributed to complex work, but there are situations when, having installed the door with high quality and without problems, novice craftsmen cannot beautifully and quickly install platbands on it. And all because the installation of platbands requires the performer to be extremely collected and knowledge of all the intricacies of preparing the material and the nuances of fastening.

Types of platbands and tools for their installation

Can be used to frame doors different types platbands, differing both in the material of manufacture and in their shape. The material for platbands is most often wood (solid or spliced) or plastic. There are also steel or aluminum platbands, as well as plywood or laminate.

The shape of the platbands can be flat, rounded and figured. Flat ones are the simplest and most democratic, they will not catch the eye in any interior. Rounded ones differ from flat ones in that they have a rounded frontal part, which gives them unusualness and some sophistication. The most beautiful are figured ones, which are mostly made to order.

But all this variety of types of platbands can be divided into two large groups. The first includes platbands, which at the end have the shape of a rectangle. Their advantage is that they can simply be joined without cutting corners of 45º.

The second group is platbands with a semicircular or figured section at the end. Such shapes look great, but when installed uncut or carelessly cut, their central part will protrude above the bottom end, which will immediately catch the eye. Therefore, their trimming strictly at an angle of 45º is required.

To install the platbands on the door you will need a tool:

  • miter box;
  • electric jigsaw or wood saw;
  • a hammer;
  • pencil;
  • roulette;
  • construction corner.

Corner cutting technique

To cut trim at an angle of 45º, it is advisable to use a miter box (a special tray for cutting lumber at a certain angle). But if there is no miter box, then you can use a more complex, but no less reliable method that requires a certain knowledge of geometry.

First, on the existing casing, you need to measure the length of the door. At this mark with building level draw a perpendicular line. Then, from this line, you need to measure the width of the platband and draw another perpendicular line along the mark. As a result, these lines form a rectangle on the casing.

Then you need to draw a diagonal in this rectangle, turning it into two triangles. But there is one caveat - you can make a mistake and draw the diagonal in the wrong direction. To avoid this, just put the casing on the door and see in which direction you need to draw. The diagonal should start from the top corner of the door and go up to the ceiling.

Another vertical platband is marked in the same way. But it’s still not worth using the first one as a template, because the dimensions of the two sides of the door frame can - albeit slightly - differ. The horizontal platband is marked according to the same principle, but on both sides, respectively, it will have two undercuts. And only after the end of the markup, you can start trimming.

Using the drawn diagonal line as a marker, you can start trimming the trim. If you cut with an electric jigsaw, then you definitely need to cut it in one pass, without stopping. If the jigsaw starts to move, then the undercut will come out either curved or wavy. If the cuts are made with a hacksaw, then it must be with a fine tooth, otherwise the structure of the material may be damaged.

Platband installation

Installation of platbands should always be started from the side of the door into which it opens. door leaf. This is because on this side are located door hinges, due to which the platbands cannot be installed flush with the door frame.

Therefore, in order for the door hinges to move freely, a small indentation has to be made on this side of the door. Moreover, they do it not only from the side of the loops, but also from the opposite side, so that installed platbands looked symmetrical. On the back of the box, you can install platbands on the door without any indents.

Depending on the material of the platbands choose best way mounts. For fastening wooden products you can use liquid nails or ordinary small copper-plated or galvanized nails.

Liquid nails are best used if the surface of the wall is perfectly aligned, otherwise it is better to choose ordinary nails. If the platbands are dark, it is better to take copper-plated ones, and if they are light, galvanized ones. You can also mount it on glue, but if in the future it will be necessary for some reason to dismantle it, then with such a mount you will not have to dismantle, but break the old platbands.

Plastic platbands are preferable to glue. They do not need perfectly aligned walls, their flexibility is enough to hide small irregularities. And their cost allows you to break them during dismantling without regret.

Laminated platbands from wooden appearance not distinguish. But to install them, you need a special technique. If you try to simply nail the planks with nails, the material will be damaged. Therefore, during installation, holes for nails Ø1-1.5 mm are first drilled, and drilling should not be through, but leaving 2-3 mm undrilled.

Installation starts from the sidewalls. Choice of left or right side doors depends solely on your taste.

At first, it is better not to nail the planks thoroughly, but only to bait with two nails, hammering them in half: one nail at the base, the second in the middle.

After completing the installation of the vertical strips, you need to install the horizontal one. It is also better to first bait it with two nails, but only hammering them around the edges.

Having acquired all three platbands, you need to correct their location in order to avoid gaps between the planks. The adjustment is carried out by lightly tapping the sidewalls of the planks with a hammer, and if the gaps are large, then you need to carefully pull out one nail and set the bar in the desired position.

Having finished the adjustment, you can proceed to fixing the slats. The pitch of the fixing nails can be different and depends on the way the door is used. If the door will be used frequently, then it is better to choose a fastening step of 15-20 cm, if it is balcony door or a door to a closet, then fastening in increments of 50 cm is quite enough.

If you do not have sufficient experience in the installation operation, then it is advisable to measure all sizes before installing the trim. doorways in the house and start the installation from the biggest one. In this case, if something goes wrong when sawing or installing architraves, incorrectly cut strips can be redone for smaller doorways, thus avoiding the need to buy additional material.

If, despite all your efforts, the platbands did not fit perfectly and small gaps remained at the joints, do not be upset. Buy at hardware store a special mixture to eliminate chips on furniture. This mixture is based on beeswax, so it is enough to heat it over low heat, bringing it to the consistency of plasticine. Then the cracks are filled with this heated wax, and when the mixture hardens, it is polished with a piece of felt and painted with acrylic paint matched to the platbands.

If you do not rush and follow the technology exactly, then the installation of platbands on the door will be an easy and pleasant completion of the installation or repair of the door. Good luck!
