The design options for these zones are sometimes simply amazing. But the most interesting thing is that many of them can be equipped with your own hands in your yard. The main thing is to choose the right place and follow the advice of professionals.

What is a patio?

Patio area in the country

There are a lot of options for interpreting the "patio". It is called both an internal open courtyard, and an open-air living room, and a summer room without a roof, and not only. In fact, the patio is a small area paved with natural stone, wood or gravel.

It settles down most often at the back wall of the house. And additionally furnished with garden furniture. Tables or chairs, armchairs or garden swing sofas- absolutely everything that will allow a person to relax and unwind over a cup of tea in the morning or after a hard day's work will do. In addition to garden furniture, the patio area can be equipped with sandboxes, fountains, barbecues or any other landscape solutions that can make it more comfortable for all family members.

Design the patio so that the finished area is always in the shade. At the same time, someone arranges it in the form of a gazebo, and someone simply covers or blocks it with a hedge, screen or trellis, next to which weaving plants will grow.

The first patios appeared in Roman times. Representing areas fenced with high walls of buildings, they served as a place of rest or entertainment for the nobility. Since then, their purpose has not changed much. However, the construction process has become much simpler and has become available to absolutely everyone.

Location selection

Place for patio

The choice of location for the patio area is one of milestones her arrangement. Since not only the appearance, but also the convenience of its use depends on it.

Traditionally, this site is built at the back wall of the house. It is she who will hide one of the sides of the patio area from unnecessary eyes. The remaining three can be covered with any landscape elements or leave open. For example, in the event that they go out into the garden, presenting unique landscapes to the eyes of their guests.

It is best if the wall adjacent to the patio area has an additional door to the house. In this case, it will be much more convenient to use the equipped area, since you won’t have to go around the building once again in order to take out a cup of tea in the morning, go for your favorite treat or hide from the rain.

However, the absence free space against the back wall is no reason to abandon the idea of arranging a patio in your yard. In this case, you can look small plot in the depths of the garden or directly in front of the house and, having created an atmosphere of solitude and security in it, enjoy the fruits of your labor to your heart's content.

Design Options

patio design

Exists great amount patio area design options. They are distinguished:

  • according to the shape of the platforms - round, square, in the form of a crescent, rhombus or bizarre geometric shapes;
  • according to the degree of security - with or without a canopy and a fence;
  • in size - large or small;
  • type internal filling when, in addition to standard garden furniture, baths, hearths, fountains, pools, barbecue ovens, barbecues, playgrounds, etc. are placed in the patio area.

Preparatory stage

Marking the patio area with a hose

  1. Work on the arrangement of the patio should begin with the preparation of the site. If necessary, it is cleaned and leveled. And then determine the boundaries of the patio area. This is best done with stakes and a string or hose.
  2. Preparation of materials and tools. Their choice depends, first of all, on the method by which the arrangement of the patio area will be carried out - dry or through the use of cement mortar.

When choosing a "dry" method, you will need the following materials:

  • sand for "pillow";
  • curbs that will prevent the "driving" of bricks.
  • bricks;
  • granite;
  • crushed stone;
  • agrofabric.

To work, you will need to prepare the tools:

  • shovel for leveling the site;
  • garden rake;
  • a hammer;
  • rammer for compacting sand;
  • cart;
  • bars for erecting curbs;
  • brush for sweeping sand from bricks.

Having decided to build a patio with your own hands through the use of cement mortar, you need to prepare:

  • ready mix, or cement and building sand;
  • paving slabs;
  • broken brick.

To work, you will need tools such as:

  • equalizer;
  • a hammer;
  • wooden pegs;
  • wheelbarrow;
  • shovel;
  • putty knife.

Construction Options

The most basic and common ways to build a patio area are the construction of a "dry" method and with the help of cement mortar.

"Dry" method when arranging a patio area with your own hands

The final stage - sweeping sand

This is a fairly simple way, thanks to which you can make a patio in just 2-3 days. The number of bricks for its implementation directly depends on the area of \u200b\u200bthe site. For example, to equip a zone with dimensions of 300x150, you will need 200 pieces. Moreover, it is undesirable to take clay ones, since they are characterized by low strength and high specific gravity.

After selecting the site, thinking through the shape and design of the patio area, as well as marking, you must:

  1. Dig a trench about 20 cm deep. If the area allotted for the patio area has a slope, you need to dig a trench from the side of the slope, while making sure that it is level.
  2. Fill the bottom of the trench with crushed stone by 5 cm and, having compacted it well, repeat the procedure. After re-tamping, you need to check the evenness of the surface with a level.
  3. Prepare the bars for laying curbs. From the edge of each beam, it is necessary to measure 14 cm in length and 7 cm in width, sawing off the marked part, and painting the saw cuts well to prevent them from rotting. Then you need to lay out the bars around the perimeter, using nails to connect their ends to each other at the level of saw cuts.
  4. Cover the area under the patio area with agricultural fabric, which will prevent the germination of grass.
  5. Lay and compact the crushed stone in an even layer on top of the agricultural fabric.
  6. Lay and level a layer of sand on top of a layer of rubble.
  7. Do brick work. It should be performed on a perfectly flat surface, starting from the corner of the patio area. In this case, you can choose any convenient pattern. Although the simplest and most effective is “weaving”, when the first two bricks are laid in parallel, and the next two are perpendicular. It is undesirable to move the brick on the sand. It is better to fix it with a rubber mallet. At correct execution laying, bricks with borders should subsequently be on the same level.
  8. On the bricked patio area, you need to pour a layer of sand and distribute it with a brush so that all the cracks are filled.
  9. Cover patio areas with a mortar or impregnation that will increase the resistance of the surface to external influences.

Brick in the arrangement of the patio area can be replaced with natural stone, tile fragments, round pebbles or special blocks.

Building with cement mortar

Laying rubble for the patio area

This option goes through several stages:

  1. Marking with pegs. Inside the future patio area, you need to make a recess (about 15 cm), on the bottom of which you need to pour a layer broken brick, filling them with no more than 10 cm.
  2. Laying paving slabs by using mortar, which is prepared by mixing 1 part cement, 5 parts building sand and water until the desired consistency is reached. Moreover, a layer of cement is laid out on the surface of the brick, and plates with a gap of 1 cm are laid on top. During this stage, it is important to use a hammer to ensure that the plates fit tightly to the mortar.
  3. Laying out a solution prepared from 1 part of cement, 3 parts of sand and water on the surface of the laid paving slabs. It will fill in the seams. Its remains must be removed.
  4. Drying of the solution. The process can take 2-3 days.

Decorating the patio area

Hot sunny Mediterranean: narrow stone streets, sultry air, tropical greenery and a corner of shady bliss, hidden from human eyes behind the high walls of the house. The Italian patio was created with special love, it was a cozy place for the whole family to relax. This is probably why today, when landscaping a site, many gardeners reproduce a piece mediterranean style in your garden.

The patio in the country house or in the garden is becoming more and more popular, and its arrangement allows the owners of the site to plunge into the romantic atmosphere of the Mediterranean. Let's see how the idea of creating a patio can be applied to modern landscape design together with Dream Home.

How to plan a patio on the site: a variety of options

In modern landscape design, the concept of a patio as a completely enclosed courtyard has been lost among the variety of options. It can be two walls that hide the owners of the site from the heat at noon and the prying eyes of neighbors, or a landscaped area surrounded by hedges. But the foundation - a rocky flat area - remains unchanged.

The desire to equip a patio in your country house or a plot of a private house is easily doable. First of all, it makes sense to determine the place for this site. It is assumed that it will be a place for family recreation, and this should be taken into account when planning. The site for the site must be flat. It is possible that it will offer a wonderful view of the garden, or in the future, flower beds and hedges will be planned to create privacy.

Having determined the place, the gardener must consider the style of decoration: walls, hedges, or both. Then they prepare the site: before laying the main covering of the patio, fertile soil from the selected site is selected. In its place, a gravel cushion of a small height of not more than 10 cm is poured, then it is filled with coarse sand to the same height. On top of the sand lay the foundation of a rocky platform.

Creating a patio with your own hands: materials and methods

The base materials for building a patio in the country with your own hands can be very different: fake diamond, natural stone slabs, cobblestones, tiles, bricks, paving stones. The most important thing to consider is the convenience in further use. A cobblestone that is too large will not create an ideal and flat surface, garden furniture will constantly swing on such a site.

The selected material is tightly laid over the entire site only after the sand cushion has been leveled and abundant watering water. Wet sand will settle, possible errors that arose during the backfilling of the site will become noticeable. After their correction, the sand is again moistened with water, then the intended base is laid. At the end of laying, the entire area is covered with dry sand to fill the gaps between the stones. Then the sand is swept away, and the site is watered, all these actions are repeated again several times.

The erection of patio walls is also possible using various materials. In place of future walls, they dig a trench a little more than the intended width of the fence. The bottom of the trench is covered with gravel to avoid possible subsidence of the finished structure.

Walls are erected with or without bonding mortars (for example, limestone). When erected in niches, containers are immediately laid for subsequent planting flower plants if such an option is provided. The top of the walls is made obliquely, in this case, when precipitation falls, water does not linger on the stones and does not destroy the fence.

Patio: design for the soul

If walls are erected or the patio is limited beautiful railings, a fireplace or an outdoor stove can be placed on the site. In this case, it will be possible to comfortably spend time in this area even on cool summer evenings.

The main designs of the patio make out flower arrangements. Additionally, raised flower beds or rock gardens are built along the edge of the site. The selection of plants depends on the overall style or design of the patio. To decorate boring stone walls, you can use plants with bright yellow and red flowers. perennial climbing vines close the walls and create additional coolness. If desired, the walls can be decorated with flower pots with a variety of ampelous plants.

The finishing touches in the design of the patio will be garden furniture. A great option would be products made from natural wood materials. In this case, the "patio" picture will be organically completed and peaceful. Perhaps the main furniture for the patio will be a table with chairs or a bench, because there is no better dining area in the garden than a well-appointed patio. It can also be swings and rocking chairs, soft sofas, hammocks and other furniture for convenience.

As you can see, a patio in the country or in the garden can be built and decorated with your own hands. Of course, this article describes only an approximate version of how to make a patio, so you can safely experiment with both materials and design options. The patio can be built on a hill, and on level ground, and in a recess. The surface of the patio floor can be either stone or wood, but there is always the option of leaving the earth only by compacting it or filling it with rubble, or even equipping the patio on the grass.
