  • purchase materials and prepare tools;
  • on the basis of the drawing, prepare parts of the required dimensions;
  • assemble the main frame;
  • make a back, side walls, stairs, legs;
  • assemble the overall structure.

During the design and development, drawings of the bed are prepared. Particular attention is paid to the safety of the entire structure as a whole: a strong frame, reliable side walls (fences), easy stair climb.

Drawings and diagrams

All work requires accuracy and precision, so each stage accompanies the drawing. He is preparing not one, but for all parts. The exact dimensions of the parts, height, thickness will help to get the result that the master is striving for.

What is indicated on the drawing:

  • dimensions of the final structure;
  • assembly diagram of individual parts;
  • ways to connect nodes;
  • order of installation of each part;
  • dimensions of structural parts and fasteners.

materials

In the manufacture bunk bed at home, you need to choose the right material. Experts recommend paying attention to the following types:

  • array - from which beautiful, strong and durable structures are obtained. But to work with it, building skills and abilities are required;
  • lumber - which must be selected from quality dried specimens. Raw wood will not retain its shape, it will begin to take away, cracks may appear;
  • MDF is a modern analogue of ordinary wood. Products look attractive and stylish. You can choose laminated MDF boards. There is a variant of the usual raw plate, then it is covered in ready-made stain and varnish. If bed parts are ordered for furniture factory, then the experts will process the edges special finish. The furniture will be neat, no different from the factory;
  • Chipboard (LDSP) is a material that is not suitable for all parts of the bed. From it you can make boxes under the base of the frame, backrest, panel. It is important to consider covering the ends of the parts with a film;
  • furniture board - consisting of pieces glued into a single whole. natural wood not just beautiful, it allows you to carve, perform other ornaments, embody interesting design solutions. Only a master with a carpentry skill will be able to work with a furniture shield.

Tools

Making bunk furniture for children is not difficult if you cook everything the right tools and recall existing building skills. Of course, it’s good if the master has already made something out of wood and knows how to work with it.

For work you will need:

  • saw - hacksaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • planer or grinder;
  • knives;
  • jigsaw (preferably electric);
  • sandpaper;
  • drill.

We need instruments and devices for measuring, fixing. You can not do the work without a simple pencil.

frame

The manufacture of the frame begins with the measurement of the mattress. The base and its shape correspond to the chosen size of the bed for the child. If the design is with a sofa, the bottom of the seat is measured.

Frame manufacturing process:

  • the box is connected to the sofa at the bottom;
  • boards (long and end) are being prepared, which are assembled into a rectangle. They can be compared to a box. There will be two such boxes according to the number of tiers;

Making a frame for the first and second floor
  • the sofa fits into the box;
  • to connect the box with the sofa, side supports are being prepared. These are two bars standing vertically. They are pulled together by smaller bars. There should also be two supports. One rectangle for one side wall, another for the second;

Thus, the frame is attached to the supports
Fastening bars to support the frame during assembly
Fastening of spacer blocks

The fastening of the boards is done convenient way: eyelets, spikes. Before fastening, they are lubricated with wood glue. The elements are connected firmly so that it is not possible for any part of the frame to loosen during operation. The resulting structure is dried. A photo of a bunk bed with a sofa is shown below.

If a tenon connection difficult for the master, then self-tapping screws can be used. The main thing is to consider their closure with outside so that there is no possibility of getting abrasions and scratches. The fastening is reinforced with metal corners.

Back

The backs are different, it can be a rack option, when slats are added to the frame of the lower and upper parts. They will hold all the furniture, protect from constant contact with the walls of the room. Often the back of the lower tier is made soft. Then the sleeping place below can be compared with a sofa.

In this version, for the back you will need:

  • furniture board, or boards, tightly pressed against each other;
  • a solid wall that will limit the bed from contact with the wall.

Prepared boards (shield, slats) are fixed to the back of the frame. For reliability, attach the bed to the wall by connecting the backrest to the wall with metal corners. At simple version the design of the back of the bed does not play a role. It is needed only to highlight each tier, to limit the frame. It can be one rail on three sides of the bed. Photo from various options backs are shown below.

Side walls

Side walls in construction terminology, the head and back are called. These are two elements that are similar to each other, with the only difference being that railings are inserted in the back, and the headboard remains solid. Sometimes both parts are ordered in workshops, then you just have to fix them on the frame. The side walls can be made integral for two floors.

For the head take:

  • two sanded boards, one slightly wider than the other;
  • 4 side rails.

Side wall fixing:

  • headboard boards are inserted into the rail on the sides. The second rail will be needed to fasten the walls with other parts;
  • back and headboard are connected;
  • to support the mattress, a lattice, lamella or mesh is made;

Laying rails on the top bottom
  • rail is nailed to inside frame, to strengthen the fortress. It is recommended to make at least one partition for the mattress, which will add rigidity;

Bars to maintain the slatted bottom
  • a frame is being prepared for the slats, it is located along the inner plane of the bed;
  • a rail is superimposed on the frame, an approximate step of 5-7 cm.

All external ribs need to be chamfered (6x6 mm). This can be done with a hand plow.

For the back, you will also need two boards and four slats. But the location of the boards here needs to be changed: set the wide board at the bottom, the narrow board at the top. The height of the wide board of the back coincides in size with the narrow board of the headboard.

Stairs

Any children's two-story structure requires the installation of a ladder. A three-step staircase is considered traditional, but depending on the height of the bed, there may be more steps. The drawings will tell you the dimensions, the height of the stairs, the width of the step and the methods of fastening.

By type of fastening stairs are:

  • vertical - tightly attached to the frame;
  • inclined - located at an angle.

Stair manufacturing process:

Preparation for future steps
  • two beams are installed, which will be the bases of the stairs - guides;
  • then the steps are fixed. The lower step is connected to the backrest, and the rest are exactly one above the other. Steps are inserted into the bars.

Step connection methods:

  • external;
  • into the recess;
  • on metal corners.

Please note that any fastening must be closed. This will secure the child's use of the bed, protect the entire structure. If the furniture is with a sofa, it is better to make a staircase with wider steps. Then a wide beam is taken, and the steps are cut from the inside. If steps are bolted, the longest bolts are selected for the top step.

For the stairs you need a handrail for which the baby will hold. Railing drawings are always given along with a description of the installation of the stairs. The railing is a regular board, designed to grip a child’s hand, with a selection for mounting on a frame.

The ends act as stairs

legs

The legs may be different heights and forms. It all depends on the pattern of the bed that the master prepares.

They are fixed in several ways:

  • from within;
  • outside;
  • inserted into the frame.

To strengthen the frame, a fifth leg is added. In practice, the following types of legs are considered the most popular:

  • square;
  • round;
  • carved.

Legs are sized to provide stability and durability for children. The drawings give precise descriptions of their assembly. But their appearance is very important, they change the whole style of the furniture.

Leg manufacturing process:

  • for work, they take bars and connect them two by two together. The approximate thickness of the bars is 50-100 ml;
  • When connected along the length, an L-shaped end should be obtained. The length of the leg is equal to the height of the fence of the second tier.

Is there not enough room for separate cots in the children's room? Assemble a children's wooden bunk bed with your own hands. We have prepared design options for you, accompanied them with diagrams and drawings, we will show the algorithm for making such a bed with our own hands, illustrating with photo and video materials.

A bunk bed for children or teenagers can also be made of metal, but not everyone will get a neat welded construction, and the appearance of such beds is not too childish. Therefore, we will consider the manufacture of beds from wood and lumber, as these are inexpensive and easy-to-work materials, warm, beautiful and homely.

Bed frame materials

Scroll wood materials, from which you can make a bed, is quite long. Let's highlight the most common ones.

1. Array. Expensive material and quite difficult to prepare and manufacture if you have no experience with it. Experience is important here. Although solid wood products turn out to be the most beautiful and durable, they still do not use a children's bed for a very long time - children grow up and begin to need other sleeping places.

2. Lumber - edged or planed board, timber - the most common and easy-to-work materials, provided that you are sure of proper drying, otherwise load-bearing structure can "lead".

3. MDF - fibreboard. The formaldehyde emission of the material is at the same level as that of ordinary wood. When drilling dusty, without forming chips. Laminated MDF looks very attractive. An uncoated slab requires additional finishing, such as varnishing. It is possible to order individual elements of the bed in furniture shop or a sawing workshop: everything is carefully cut out there, the edges are glued.

4. Chipboard - chipboard. Formaldehyde emission increased without sealed coating, class E1 board excluded. Easy to saw, but does not hold screws well. Suitable for unloaded parts such as drawers mounted under the bottom of the bed. Laminated board (LDSP) can be used to make backs, decorative panelsfilm coating does not allow formaldehyde to evaporate, but it is important that the ends of the plates are covered with a film.

5. furniture board- a plate glued from separate blocks natural wood. Beautiful, durable, even allows you to carve, but requires skill in work, as it has internal stresses that need to be taken into account.

When buying accessories, preference should be given to steel hardware. Aluminum is much less durable and rigid.

Methods for connecting wooden knots

When making a bed, you may need various connections horizontally, vertically, forming corners. This can be done different ways. We present some of them for reference.

1 - half-tree connection; 2 - connection "in the paw"

1 - complete felling; 2 - cutting is not complete; 3 - steel corner

1 - connection on rectangular dowels; 2 - connection on the keys "dovetail"; 3 - connection in the root spike

Design options (drawings and decor)

Bunk beds can be of various designs and be decorated in various ways. So, the upper tier can be exactly above the lower one, be offset, leaving room for the locker, or be perpendicular to it. Stairs may consist of drawers. Another option is steps, which are hinged drawer lids. The bed frame can also be supplemented with drawers located under the bottom mattress. To do this, you will need guides - runners. Sometimes something else is added to the bed: a table, shelves, a pencil case or sports equipment.

Below are drawings of some beds with basic dimensions.

And now for some design ideas that can inspire the creation of an original bunk bed. Pay attention to how absolutely “junk” materials are used in some models - croaker, branches, trunks, snags.

How to make a bunk bed

One of the most inexpensive materials- a board and a bar from a pine. It is from them that we will make a bunk bed.

Material calculation

When making a bed, you need to keep in mind that not only a child can sit on the lower bed, so the distance to the bottom of the upper bed should not be less than 85 cm. The size of the beds in the case of purchased mattresses is determined by their width and length. If you yourself make mattresses from two layers of foam rubber in a dense fabric cover, then the dimensions are taken based on personal preferences.

The figure below shows the individual elements of the bed, and the table shows the purpose, dimensions and number of blanks.

1 — vertical racks(legs); 2 - external pads on the racks; 3 - boards of the supporting frame; 4 - upper and lower slats of the headboard; 5 - central plank of the headboard; 6 - side railings; 7 - stair railing; 8 - steps of the stairs

Qty Size, mm Name
4 38x76x1730 Vertical racks
4 38x76x1730 Blanks for external overlays on vertical racks
4 38x140x2030 Bed frame boards
4 32x44x1850 Longitudinal mattress support bars (not shown in the figure)
24 20x76x1000 Mattress support cross rails (not shown), cut in place
8 20x140x914 Top and bottom headboard/footboards
4 20x90x914 Headboard/footboard center slats
1 20x90x1510 stair railing
3 20x64x482 stairs
2 20x90x1800 Fence railing, cut to right size during installation

Assembly units

A bed is furniture that consists of several assembly units, which are then assembled into a single unit. Identical parts can be cut by fastening them with a vice or clamp, so they will turn out to be absolutely identical. Before assembly, make sure that all wooden details clean, smooth and free of burrs. It is better to work with a special grinder for wood or a grinder.

1. Headboard and footboard

These are two almost mirror-image elements. The difference lies in the embedding of the railing at the footboard, as shown in the pictures below.

Headboard and footboard

Detailed layout with headboard and footboard dimensions

Installation order: 1 - dowel 8 mm; 2 - the stand and the backrest slats are drilled at the same time; 3 - this part is attached after assembling all other parts of the headboard

2. Elements of the supporting frame

To assemble two supporting frames, four prepared boards are required - the longitudinal components of the frame. For the reliability of the structure, the longitudinal bar must be glued to the board and additionally screwed with screws to the middle of the board thickness. Between the bars glued to the longitudinal support bar of the mattress, transverse slats will be laid - the base for the mattress.

The design and dimensions of the supporting frame board

3. Details of stairs and railings

The railing of the fence is just a processed board, the railing of the stairs is a board with a sample for mounting on the frame. The places for fastening the steps must be marked in advance, and make sure that the screws for fixing them do not fall on the screws of the frame.

1 - cutouts 38 mm; 2 - places for fastening the steps; 3 - stairs, 3 pcs.; 4 - fence

4. Assembly of the frame

The footboard and headboard are connected at the bottom to the boards of the supporting frame with screws. After that, the transverse slats, mattress holders are laid, and the extreme ones are sawn in the corners for a tight installation. They do not need to be fixed. The assembly of the second tier is carried out in the same way.

5. Assembly of stairs and railings

The ladder and railing are simply fixed to the frame with screws. If desired, the fence can be made from the side of the wall - for the lower and upper beds. Then you need four more bars.

Now the wood can be painted and varnished, the mattresses can be laid - and the bed is ready!

For this, oak is most often used (a ready-made bunk bed can be bought from it for at least 16,000 rubles), birch (from 9,000 rubles), beech (from 30,000 rubles) or pine (from 6,500 rubles). Laminated chipboard is also often used (the cost of such a bed will cost 7,500 rubles).

When creating a children's bed made of wood with your own hands, depending on the materials, you can save from 20% to 30% of money.

It is better to avoid the presence of metal in children's beds, as it is the most traumatic material.

  • frees up a lot of space where the child can play;
  • costs much less than two single beds;
  • multifunctionality: cabinets, drawers, desk, slides and other elements necessary for the baby;
  • withstand a lot of weight.

Flaws:

  • great weight. Assembling a bunk bed alone and rearranging it is quite difficult;
  • if there are no protective bumpers on the second floor, the child may fall off it and get injured;
  • restrict access to the baby sleeping on the second floor;
  • too bulky furniture will not only not save space in the apartment, but will also create even more inconvenience.

The first step in building beds for children is planning and design. Here are defined required dimensions future design, as well as an approximate estimate of the cost of installation work.

At this stage, determine the following:

  • Location for the bed. It should be chosen taking into account the layout of the children's room.
  • Options for the location of the ladder structure for climbing to the second tier. Usually it is placed on the side of the facade (that is, with right side beds).
  • The size and shape of the beds. In addition, their number is determined, because, as mentioned above, on the first tier you can make a desk or chest of drawers.
  • Product height and width. Please note that it is strictly forbidden to build the second tier too high for safety reasons. The width of the berths should depend on the size of the available children's mattress and growth of children. Approximately this value is 80 cm.
  • The height of the location of the first and second tiers. Remember that in the gap between the first and second tiers, an adult should be placed in a sitting position. At the same time, the lower tier should not be placed too close to the floor surface, because under it you can organize a niche for children's underwear or toys.
  • If you are afraid for the safety of your child "on the second floor", then you can make a side for a children's bed with your own hands.

Materials and tools

To work on a do-it-yourself bunk children's bed, we need the following materials and tools:

  • Boards 40x80, 30x30. It is best to choose pine, as this type of wood meets all the requirements. For the manufacture of one tier, approximately 9 boards will be required.
  • Sheet laminated chipboard. This material, unlike wood, does not need pretreatment protective compounds and grinding.
  • 2 sheets of durable plywood 900x1900. For mounting the base of the frame.
  • Board 18x140 - for attaching a sunbed.
  • Board for forming the base of sunbeds. Usually a bar of 30x30 mm is taken for this.
  • Boards and wooden planks for the manufacture of ladder structures (vertical and horizontal lintels).
  • Board for fixing the frame. Its dimensions are 40x140 mm.
  • 3 steel tubes.
  • Fasteners - screws, washers.
  • Glue - for processing the joints of the product.
  • Screwdriver, drill.
  • Protective compositions for processing wooden boards.
  • Machine for grinding work.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Roulette, level - for measuring the structure.
  • Saw, hacksaw - for cutting structural elements.
  • Milling machine.

Choosing a mattress for a children's bunk bed

The dimensions of the beds depend on which mattresses will be used for the crib. Let's take a closer look at what types they are. spring block:

  • Mattresses made on the basis of a block with dependent springs. In order for such a product to last for a long time, on its one square meter there must be at least 130 special springs.
  • Mattresses with the strengthened spring block. In this case, flat springs are usually installed between the frames of the spring block. Between their rows are additional blocks made of polyurethane foam. This design provides sufficient rigidity and elasticity.
  • Mattresses on blocks from independent springs(with orthopedic effect). In this case, each layer is usually in a separate shell. So, the child lies on this mattress and the body weight is evenly distributed over its surface, which makes it possible to have a good rest. In addition, the spine maintains the correct position from the point of view of physiology.

In addition to spring blocks, there are mattresses with other fillers. The following are suitable for baby cots:

  • Heat pressed felt. This material is combined from natural and synthetic threads. It is obtained by sintering special technology, therefore different high density. Felt is often used to protect the layers of a mattress from the impact of a spring block. This material makes the mattress durable and gives it extra rigidity.
  • Coconut shavings can be used as a hard flooring. This material is usually obtained from threads coconut. They are processed natural latex, due to which the coconut tile becomes elastic. It is noteworthy that the service life of such flooring is much higher than that of various artificial fillers. This material does not give in to rotting, deformation. At the same time, it does not absorb moisture, is well ventilated, has antibacterial and anti-allergic properties. It is hygienic, reliable and elastic material. Its use as a flooring makes the mattress durable and resilient.

Do-it-yourself baby bed: work order

The order of installation work:

  • First of all, you should decide on the type and size of the mattress used. 2-3 cm should be added to the size of each side, so you can calculate the dimensions of the frame frame for the sunbed. Using a machine, we cut out a sunbed of the desired size on a sheet of plywood.

  • Based on the previously made calculations, we cut out a frame and sides for a bunk bed from wooden bars.

  • We attach the cut out sides with the help of self-tapping screws to the previously made frame. For their manufacture, we take a board 150x20 mm. The result should be two sunbeds, 2 frames and 2 sides for each tier.

  • We turn to the manufacture of the legs of the bed. Since the design of the bunk bed is quite massive, it is better to use durable wooden bars 50x100 mm. In any case, the safety of the entire structure depends on the reliability of the support. In order for the legs to be able to withstand the weight of the entire structure, it is better to make them in the shape of the letter “L”. We connect the boards together with self-tapping screws, and cover the holes from the caps with a putty mixture and rub sandpaper. Please note that the length of the legs (supporting structural elements) should be equal to the height of the sides located on the second tier.

  • In the bars from which the legs of the structure were made, we make holes in the place where the second tier will be mounted. Next, a large screw is screwed in here. We perform similar operations on each of the 4 legs.
  • The wooden structure should be additionally attached to the wall. To do this, holes are drilled in the attachment points. desired diameter. If the walls are made of drywall, then the places for attaching wooden racks must be marked strictly where they pass metal profiles. For fastening, screws with hex heads and brackets are used.

  • We turn to the manufacture of fences for sunbeds. It is they who will protect the children from falling from a height during sleep. In order to make a fence, you will need wooden planks 20x100 mm, which are further mounted on vertical wooden racks(50x100 mm). Wooden elements are fixed to each other with self-tapping screws. The enclosing structures themselves are made in such a way that they have an opening for mounting the stairs.

  • We turn to the manufacture of stairs. They are usually made strictly vertical or at a slight inclination. For this, two support bars are prepared, to the side parts of which are then attached wooden steps. Bolts are used as fasteners.

  • Plywood beds are attached to the support frame. Next, the previously made fences are attached.
  • Next, the reliability and safety of the design made is checked, because the bed is made for children. If necessary, wooden structural elements are additionally fixed with bolts and screws. The reliability of fixing the bed racks to the wall using brackets is checked.
  • All wooden structural elements are treated with protective compounds, then covered with a matte nitro varnish. The varnish should be applied in two layers.
